Abstract:
High-pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) virus, low-pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) virus, virulent Newcastle disease virus (vNDV) and low-virulent Newcastle disease virus (lNDV) can be present on the eggshell surface, and HPAI viruses and vNDV can be present in the internal contents of chicken eggs laid by infected hens. With the increase in global trade, egg products could present potential biosecurity problems and affect international trade in liquid and dried egg products. Therefore, the generation of survival curves to determine decimal reduction times (DT -values) and change in heat resistance of the viruses (zD-value) within fat-free egg product could provide valuable information for development of risk reduction strategies. Thermal inactivation studies using A/chicken/Pennsylvania/1370/83 (H5N2) HPAI virus resulted in D55-, D56-, D56.7-, D57-, D58-, and D59-values of 18.6, 8.5, 3.6, 2.5, 0.4, and 0.4 min, respectively. The zD-value was 4.4°C. LPAI virus A/chicken/New York/13142/94 (H7N2) had D55-, D56.7-, D57-, D58-, D59-, and D60-values of 2.9, 1.4, 0.8, 0.7, 0.7, and 0.5 min, respectively, and a z-value of 0.4°C. vNDV avian paramyxoviruses of serotype 1 (AMPV-1)/chicken/California/212676/2002 had D55-, D56-, D56.7-, D57-, D58-, and D59-values of 12.4, 9.3, 6.2, 5, 3.7, and 1.7 min, respectively. The zD-value was 4.7°C. lNDV AMPV-1/chicken/United States/B1/1948 had D55-, D57-, D58-, D59-, D61-, and D63-values of 5.3, 2.2, 1.1, 0.55, 0.19, and 0.17 min, respectively, and a zD-value of 1.0°C. Use of these data in developing egg pasteurization standards for AI and NDV-infected countries should allow safer trade in liquid egg products.

Abstract:
Incomplete Kawasaki disease (iKD) is considered to be a less complete form of Kawasaki disease (cKD), and several differences in the laboratory presentations of iKD and cKD have been noted. We investigated serum procalcitonin levels in patients with iKD, cKD, and other febrile diseases (a control group). Seventy-seven patients with cKD, 24 with iKD, and 41 controls admitted to our hospital from November 2009 to November 2011 were enrolled in the present study. We obtained four measurements of serum procalcitonin levels and those of other inflammatory markers from each patient. Samples were taken for analysis on the day of diagnosis (thus before treatment commenced; D0) and 2 (D2), 14 (D14), and 56 days (D56) after intravenous immunoglobulin infusion. We obtained control group data at D0. The mean D0 serum procalcitonin levels of cKD patients (0.71±1.36 ng/mL) and controls (0.67±1.06 ng/mL) were significantly higher than those of iKD patients (0.26±0.26 ng/mL) (P=0.014andP=0.041, resp.). No significant difference in mean procalcitonin level was evident among groups at any subsequent time. In conclusion, the serum procalcitonin level of patients with acute-stage cKD was significantly higher than that of iKD patients.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 609 Background: Clofarabine (CLO) alone has shown antileukemic activity in MDS and AML, including sAML, at doses ranging from 15 to 40 mg/m2, although with significant myelosuppression and toxicity. Patients with high-risk MDS or sAML who failed AZA have a median OS of only 5 months (Prébet, JCO, online), and no established drug therapy is available for such patients. In this Phase I/II dose escalating study (NCT0106325), we explored safety and activity of CLO at lower dosing levels (DLs), in such patients. Methods: A standard IV, D1-5 and an extended D1, 3, 5, 8 and 10, administration schedules were studied in parallel, using a standard 3+3 design. Three DLs (CLO 5, 7.5 and 10 mg/m2, daily) were planned. Dose limiting toxicities (DLTs) were defined as any grade >3 non-hematological toxicity, excluding bleeding, infections or febrile neutropenia, or as any delayed cytopenias past D56, defined here as blood counts less than 50% of baseline counts. Responses were evaluated according to IWG 2006 MDS criteria or AML IWG criteria after courses 1 and 2, administered within 56 days. Patients in CR/PR after course 1 could receive up to 7 maintenance courses with only 3 daily infusions at same dosing. Patients in CR/PR or with stable disease after course 2 could receive up to 6 maintenance courses. If DLTs after course 1 were observed in less than 1 of 3 or 2 of 6 patients, dose escalation was permitted. If 2 or more DLTs were observed after course 1, exploration of lower intermediate DLs was planned. Patients with de novo MDS or sAML who failed at least 6 courses of AZA were eligible, if not candidates to intensive chemotherapy. Exclusion criteria included renal dysfunction (MDRD<50 ml/mn), bilirubin>1.5 ULN, liver function tests >2.5 ULN, ECOG score >2, and uncontrolled infection. Patients: Between November 2009 and July 2011, 19 Patients (10F, 9M) were enrolled, at DL1 (5 mg/m2, N=9) and DL2 (7.5 mg/m2, N=10), Median age was 72 years (62-90), WHO diagnosis were: RAEB 1 (N=1), RAEB 2 (N=8), sAML (N=10), including 7 patients with <30% marrow blasts). Cytogenetics was normal in 4 (3 RAEB, 1 AML), complex or with abn chr. 7 in 11 (8 sAML, 3 RAEB), and inv3, +8, 5q and 11q, del9q in 4 patients. Median duration of MDS phase, before entry, was 20 months (9-161). Responses to prior treatment with AZA included 6 CR, 2 marrow CR (mCR) and 4 stable with HI-E, 6 failures and 1 stable w/o HI, after a median number of AZA cycles of 10 (6-34), 11 (6-26) and 6 (6-8) respectively. Eleven patients had only received AZA and eight AZA and 1 to 3 other treatment lines, excluding growth factors. Results: (Table 1) All patients were evaluable for DLTs and response after one cycle. In the D1-5 cohort: one DL1 patient was classified as failure and non-hematological DLT (due to likely unrelated sudden death on D55, before evaluation), and one DL2 patient with mCR as DLT, due to prolonged thrombocytopenia beyond D56. One sAML patient was classified as failure due to early death linked to sepsis, but not as DLT per protocol. In the D1-10 cohort, no DLT was observed after cycle 1. Fifteen patients were eligible for an identical second course, as 2 patients had early death and 2 CR/PR. Twelve patients received a second course, with only 1/8 evaluable for response after course 2, improving response. This patient with mCR obtained durable HI-E and P after course 2. No significant liver or renal toxicity was observed in both cohorts. Seven patients were hospitalized after first course for fever or bleeding (3/9 in DL1/5mg/m2 and 4/10 in DL2/7.5mg/m2 cohorts). Overall, 6 of the 19 patients (32%) had a response after a single course including 2CR/PR and 4 of the 6 responses were seen at the 7.5 mg/m2 dose level. Conclusion: In this dose escalating study in MDS or sAML patients who had failed azacitidine, low-dose clofarabine had significant activity and was administered as an outpatient therapy in most, although hospitalization due to myelosuppression was frequent, even at this low dosing. The extended alternate day (D1-10) schedule may be better tolerated and at least as efficient as the standard D1-5 schedule, although a larger number of patients is required to conclude. Dose escalation in the trial is continuing. Disclosures: Off Label Use: low dose Clofarabine in MDS after AZA failure. Vey:GENZYME: Honoraria. Dombret:GENZYME: Honoraria. Fenaux:GENZYME: Honoraria. Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Human adenovirus (HAdV)-D56 was first described in 2011 by genomics analysis of a strain isolated in France in 2008 from a fatal case of neonatal infection. Since then, it has been reported in cases of keratoconjunctivitis and male urethritis. Three epidemiologically unrelated fatal cases of neonatal sepsis associated with infection by HAdV-D strains with a similar genetic makeup were documented in the United States between 2014 and 2020. Methods: Whole genome sequences were obtained for the isolated strains, and genomics analyses were conducted to compare them to phylogenetically related HAdV-D genomic sequences available in GenBank. Results: The three new US strains were indistinguishable by in silico restriction enzyme analysis. Their genome sequences were 99.9% identical to one another and to the prototype strain isolated in 2008 from a similar context of disease. The phylogenetic reconstruction revealed a highly supported clustering of all HAdV-D56 strains isolated in various countries since 1982. Our comparison to serologically intermediate strains 15/H9 described in the literature indicated that HAdV-D56-like viruses have circulated worldwide since the late 1950s. Conclusion: As with other HAdV-D genotypes with the ability to infect ocular and genital mucosae, the risk of severe prenatal or perinatal HAdV-D56 infection must be considered.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 169 The Philadelphia positive (Ph+) arm of the international adult acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) trial UKALL12/ECOG2993 opened in 1993 and is the largest single study of patients with Ph+ ALL, with a total of 441 participants. The first cohort of study patients was treated prior to Imatinib (N=266 “Pre Imatinib“) with 2 phases of induction therapy given over 2 months followed by matched sibling or unrelated donor myeloablative allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant (alloHSCT) whenever possible. The treatment protocol and outcome for these patients has been published (Fielding et al, Blood 2009). Beginning March 2003, a second cohort of study patients had Imatinib 600mg daily added, as a consolidation block after the second induction chemotherapy, (N=86, “Late Imatinib”). From late 2005, a final cohort within the trial were given Imatinib earlier, in conjunction with the second phase of induction (N=89, “Early Imatinib”). Patients in both Imatinib cohorts resumed the drug for a further 2 years following alloHSCT, if tolerated. If alloHSCT was not possible, Imatinib was permitted for 2 years, with maintenance. The trial closed to recruitment in December 2006 (USA) and October 2008 (UK). All except 8 patients have now completed therapy. An earlier analysis of these data did not indicate a clear long-term advantage to receiving Imatinib. We now report 3-year follow-up, which shows large outcome differences between the 3 groups. There were no pre-existing differences between the 3 cohorts in terms of gender, presenting white blood cell counts and presence of central nervous system disease at diagnosis. However, the Pre-Imatinib cohort was younger than the two Imatinib cohorts, due to an increase in the upper age limit for study entry. Percentage complete remission (CR) rates and survival of induction therapy are shown in table 1. The total CR rate for the imatinib cohorts was significantly higher than for the pre-imatinib cohort (p=0.004). Table 1 Pre-Imatinib With Imatinib N=266 Total With Imatinib N=175 Part 1 Late Imatinib N=86 Part 2 Early Imatinib N=89 Died in induction<d56 5 5 3 7 Survived induction but never achieved remission 13 3 5 1 Total not achieving CR 18 8 8 8 CR on protocol induction 67 77 73 80 Total CR rate (includes those achieving remission later than post induction) 82 92 92 92 Pre- Imatinib, only 28% of patients went on to receive alloHSCT as per protocol. With any Imatinib, 44% of patients received alloHSCT as per protocol. Survival outcomes of patients in the 3 cohorts are shown in the table 2. Overall survival (OS), event free survival (EFS) and relapse free survival (RFS) are all at 3 years with 95% confidence intervals (CI) shown in brackets. The P values are for two comparisons - ** denotes the comparison between patients receiving any Imatinib and patients receiving none and ^ denotes the comparison between the Early and Late Imatinib cohorts. Table 2 Pre-Imatinib With Imatinib Total With Imatinib Part 1 Late Imatinib Part 2 Early Imatinib % OS (95% CI) (see also Figure 1) 25 (20–30) 42 (34–49) 34 (24–44) 48 (36–60) p=0.0001** p=0.05^ % EFS (95% CI) 19 (14–24) 36 (29–44) 29 (19–38) 45 (34–56) p=0.0001** p=0.04^ % RFS (95% CI) 36 (28–43) 54 (45–63) 45 (33–57) 62 (50–75) p=0.0001** p=0.02^ Figure 1 Three-year OS for patients who received per protocol alloHSCT was 59% vs. 28% (with no plateau on the curve) for those who did not receive alloHSCT as per protocol. By comparison, pre-imatinib, 5 year OS was 40% for transplanted- and 19% for non-transplanted patients. Hence, the extent to which Imatinib without subsequent alloHSCT can improve the outcome for adult Ph+ ALL is not yet clear. Figure 1. Three-year OS for patients who received per protocol alloHSCT was 59% vs. In conclusion, receiving any Imatinib during induction for Ph+ ALL significantly enhances CR rate and increase alloHSCT rate. This translates into a highly significant EFS, OS and RFS advantage to receiving Imatinib during therapy. An earlier start to Imatinib is significantly better than a later start. Though comparisons between study cohorts are not randomised, the large differences seen are unlikely to be explained by factors other than treatment. There can be no basis for omitting Imatinib from the initial therapy of adult patients with Ph+ ALL. However, our data show that the best outcome is seen when patients receive Imatinib followed by myeloablative alloHSCT, where nearly 60% of such patients survive 3 years from diagnosis. Abstract:
Introduction. We report the case of a Bing and Neel syndrome revealed by an isolated left ptosis.Case Report. a 57-year-old man was followed up since October 2003 for a typical Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia. A first complete remission was obtained with chlorambucil. In August 2004, he relapsed. A second complete remission was obtained with RFC chemotherapy regimen (rituximab, fludarabine, and cyclophosphamide). In October 2009, the patient presented with an isolated left ptosis revealing a Bing and Neel syndrome. The diagnosis was suspected on MRI and confirmed by the detection in the CSF of a monoclonal IgM similar to the one found in the plasma. A quite good partial remission has been obtained after one course of RDHAP (rituximab, dexamethasone, cytarabine, and cisplatin) and 3 courses of RDHOx (rituximab, dexamethasone, cytarabine, and oxaliplatin), in addition to ten intrahectal chemotherapy injections. The treatment was followed by intensification and autologous stem cell transplantation. At D58, the patient died due to a septic shock.Conclusion. BNS is a rare and potentially treatable complication of WM. It should be considered in patients with neurologic symptoms and a history of WM.

We model the world economy as one system of endogenous input-output relationships subject to frictions and study how the world’s input-output structure and world’s GDP change due to changes in frictions. We derive a sufficient statistic to identify frictions from the observed world input-output matrix, which we fully match for the year 2011. We show how changes in internal frictions impact the whole structure of the world’s economy and that they have a much larger effect on world’s GDP than external frictions. We also use our approach to study the role of internal frictions during the Great Recession of 2007–2009. (JEL D57, E16, E23, E32, F41, G01)

Abstract:
In this work it is proposed to obtain the silicon thin films adherent on surfaces of tool-steel AISI D6 substrates and the characterization of films, substrate and film-substrate interfaces. Silicon thin films were deposited on polished surfaces of the metallic substrates by physical vapor deposition from the vaporization of silicon by electron beam technique (EB-PVD). These films were deposited with established thickness values of approximately 20, 100 e 500 nm, at 200° C. Film surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze the structural morphologies; by energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) to identify the chemical elements; by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to identify de crystalline chemical compounds; by atomic force microscopy (AFM) to scan the surface morphologies (surface roughness); and by Raman spectroscopy (RS) to analyze the residual surface stresses in the film-substrate assemblies. Film-substrate interfaces were analyzed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) to obtain the atomic silicon concentration profile. The results obtained from SEM and AFM analyzes showed that the deposited films presented structures in the nanometric (thickness of @ 20 and 100 nm) and micrometric (thickness of 500 nm) ranges. Films deposited at 200 °C showed the formation of diluted interfaces due to the thermal activated diffusion of silicon atoms, whose the thickness were proportional to the deposition time. However, the results obtained from the Raman spectroscopy analyses of the residual stress of the film-substrate assemblies are not satisfactory. These results are related to the chemical non-homogeneity and structural anisotropy of the films, interfaces and substrates. The results indicate some advantages and limits related to the techniques used for the characterization of the surfaces and the film-substrate interfaces.

Abstract:
Abstract The Geita mine is operated by AngloGold Ashanti and currently comprises four gold deposits mined as open pits and underground operations in the Geita greenstone belt, Tanzania. The mine produces ~0.5 Moz of gold a year and has produced ~8.3 Moz since 2000, with current resources estimated at ~6.5 Moz, using a lower cut-off of 0.5 g/t. The geologic history of the Geita greenstone belt involved three tectonic stages: (I) early (2820–2700 Ma) extension (D1) and formation of the greenstone sequence in an oceanic plateau environment; (II) shortening of the greenstone sequence (2700–2660 Ma) involving ductile folding (D2–5) and brittle-ductile shearing (D6), coincident with long-lived igneous activity concentrated in five intrusive centers; and (III) renewed extension (2660–2620 Ma) involving strike-slip and normal faulting (D7–8), basin formation, and potassic magmatism. Major gold deposits in the Geita greenstone belt formed late in the history of the greenstone belt, during D8 normal faulting at ~2640 Ma, and the structural framework, mineral paragenesis, and timing of gold precipitation is essentially the same in all major deposits. Gold is hosted in iron-rich lithologies along contacts between folded metaironstone beds and tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) intrusions, particularly where the contacts were sheared and fractured during D6–7 faulting. The faults, together with damage zones created along D3 fold hinges and D2–3 hydrothermal breccia zones near intrusions, formed microfracture networks that were reactivated during D8. The fracture networks served as conduits for gold-bearing fluids; i.e., lithologies and structures that trap gold formed early, but gold was introduced late. Fluids carried gold as Au bisulfide complexes and interacted with Fe-rich wall rocks to precipitate gold. Fluid-rock interaction and mineralization were enhanced as a result of D8 extension, and localized hydrofracturing formed high-grade breccia ores. Gold is contained in electrum and gold-bearing tellurides that occur in the matrix and as inclusions in pyrrhotite and pyrite. The gold mineralization is spatially linked to long-lived, near-stationary intrusive centers. Critical factors in forming the deposits include the (syn-D2–6) formation of damage zones in lithologies that enhance gold precipitation (Fe-rich lithologies); late tectonic reactivation of the damage zones during extensional (D8) faulting with the introduction of an S-rich, gold-bearing fluid; and efficient fluid-rock interaction in zones that were structurally well prepared.

Abstract:
In most cases the appearance of cultural properties depends on surface colours, materials and lighting conditions. This study aims to clear the preferred lighting conditions for the appearance of specific cultural properties named Ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock print paintings. We used two kinds of Ukiyo-e as visual targets and investigated their appearance under 12 illuminants (D65, A, D50 plus nine LEDs proposed in CIE 015:2018), and three levels of vertical illuminance (50, 200 and 500 lx). According to the results, the preferred appearance of Ukiyo-e was affected by the lighting conditions as well as by specific colours of the paintings. Illuminants with high correlated colour temperatures (CCTs) made paintings appear as newer, and the illuminance of 50 lx was not preferred. We also found that the painting including blue colours was preferred under illuminants with slightly high CCTs, and illuminants with low CCTs were not appropriate for good appearance of Ukiyo-e.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents analysis and preliminary design of the containment scheme for hydrocarbon emission control of tankers during loading and unloading. The economic and environmental impact due to hydrocarbon emission or simply VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emission during loading, unloading and transport of crude oil in tankers (including shuttle tankers) is significant. In an earlier paper by the authors (Husain, et al. 2003) presented at the SNAME/WMTC 2003 describes a closed, negative pressure system to prevent or minimize VOC from tankers during transport. Negative pressure is not used in the VOC containment scheme during loading and unloading – the subject matter of this paper. There are over 200 million barrels per year of oil being loaded at terminal facilities in the USA. Presently, the number of terminal vapor control facilities (nearly 172) is inadequate. This results in ozone formation/smog and financial loss from the evaporation of crude (0.2% loss by weight). Government regulations regarding crude oil emissions are rapidly evolving. Therefore an onboard vapor control system, free of dependency on crowded shore based (or non existent) facility is deemed necessary and appropriate.

Abstract:
As part of an ongoing effort to characterize the mechanical behavior of biological tissues in the cryogenic temperature range, the current study focuses on the thermal expansion measurements of cryoprotective agents. This study focuses particularly on the upper part of the cryogenic temperature range, where the cryoprotectant behaves like low viscous liquid at all practical cooling rates. A new experimental apparatus for thermal expansion measurements is presented in this report. This report includes thermal expansion measurements of the cryoprotectant mixtures DP6 and VS55, and comparison with data from the literature on DMSO solutions.
