Abstract:

Flores, Becky. "Critical possibilities: decritique, deracination, and the D.I.S." University of Southern Queensland, Faculty of Arts, 2005. http://eprints.usq.edu.au/archive/00001424/.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents the theory and practice of Decritique, a critical pedagogy for the first-year college English classroom that offers an alternative to contemporary applications of critical theory. Underscored by a philosophy of language drawn from Husserl's pure phenomenology and Derrida's deconstruction, a key characteristic of the pedagogy is delineation between re-cognition and recognition: the former actively seeking ways to re-position one's own thinking in relation to perceptions of the world; the latter endorsing existing perception. Concepts of "respect" and "tolerance" are questioned in Decritique, positing that they can operate as agents of oppression; instead, students engage in critical interaction and animated introspection that, in turn, opens the possibility of change. Concerned with the theory and practice of a reconceptualized critical pedagogy, the question at the core of Decritique is ways for students to reach a point of cognitive struggle leading to genuine discovery without the pain that can accompany criticism and critical self-reflection acting as a barrier to learning. Chapters One through Three examine what constitutes "the critical"; namely, critical thinking, critical pedagogy, critical literacy, and critical care, Chapter Four discusses a reconceptualization of these criticalities, Chapter Five examines the theory of Decritique, Chapter Six presents a three-semester pilot study comparing Decritique with a pedagogy of "caring" in both face-to-face and online learning environments, and Chapter Seven provides the study’s conclusions. Results indicate that students taught with Decritique consistently produced more writing than those taught with a "caring" approach, demonstrated greater evidence of "critical" reflection on essay revisions, engaged more animatedly in verbal and written discourse, exhibited a strong sense of critical camaraderie, particularly in the face-to-face classroom, and that essays averaged nearly five percent, or half a letter grade, higher. Retention and pass rates were higher in the Decritique classes and students were more likely to be satisfied with their learning experience. Implementation of the pedagogy on a wider, cross-institutional level is recommended in order to investigate the potential of Decritique as an alternative critical pedagogy for the first-year college English classroom, one that promotes reflective critical analysis of discourse with a commitment to the possibilities of praxis.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis project identifies an issue of limited interaction options with cell phones and considers it to be a design opening and opportunity, rather than a problem. The design opportunity presented in this work is for shaping of future cell phone interactions by allowing users to design their own cell phones. To explore this provocative yet complex design opportunity a programmatic design research approach is used. The design program in this thesis is referred to as the ‘Design-It-Together cell phone’, or the DIT cell phone, design program and can be described as a design research effort into how users working together to design and make their own cell phones could offer a new set of perspectives and possibilities in shaping future interaction options with cell phones in contrast to an industry lead cell phone design and development process. Furthermore, the motivation for this thesis is not problem-based but rather exploratory, where the intention is not to build an ideal phone but rather to explore the opportunities and challenges faced by the design program, and what that can mean for shaping the future of cell phone interactions. A comprehensive exploration of this design space was done in nine main explorations or nine main experiments. Each experiment was formulated to challenge a perspective of the design program. The results of the explorations generated a repertoire of examples relating to understanding the current situations and predictions for future possibilities for cell phone interactions. Interpretation of the design program was done by analyzing this repertoire of examples from the perspective of n nine specified dimensions of the design program. The dimensions acted as a guide in thinking about possible futures of cell phone interactions within the design space of the program. Interpretation of the design program in this way allowed for comprehensive scenarios to be created of what the future of cell phone interactions could be like, as well as gaps and bigger picture impacts of the design program. The overall results and contribution of this work adhered to what is expected from a programmatic design research approach and is stated here as knowledge generated from explorations and interpretation of the DIT cell phone design program, based on the generated repertoire of examples, which helps shape possible futures for cell phone interactions.

2011 - 2012
The troubled history of article 19 of Law 7th August 1990, n. 241 provides the undisputable proof of how impossible is to shape the relationship between Public Administration and Private Sector merely relying on the opposition between authority and freedom and on the required and fundamental supremacy of the former over the latter due to the sacrifice of the private interests over the common and general interest. The transformation of the relationship between public administration and Private Sector has involved the meaningful shift of the administrative function from an "active" power (commanding) to a power of control (ruling first and monitoring after) of the citizen's actions, whose statements are directly linked with administrative effects without the strict need for an official formal act from the Public. Abstract:
Compared with other mature engineering disciplines, fracture mechanics of concrete is still a developing field and very important for structures like bridges subject to dynamic loading. An historical point of view of what done in the field is provided and then the project is presented. The project presents an application of the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique for the detection of cracks at the surface of concrete prisms (500mmx100mmx100mm) subject to flexural loading conditions (Four Point Bending test). The technique provide displacement measurements of the region of interest and from this displacement field information about crack mouth opening (CMOD) are obtained and related to the applied load. The evolution of the fracture process is shown through graphs and graphical maps of the displacement at some step of the loading process. The study shows that it is possible with the DIC system to detect the appearance and evolution of cracks, even before the cracks become visually detectable.

Abstract:
The industrial restructuration, an important problem, is motivated by the different origines and is made with the different dosage of the role of government and market. We compare the cases of the developed countries (dcs) and the nics. The industrial structure (domestic production and international trade) of the nics became near the level of the dcs with the remarkable augmentation of their comparative advantage vis-a-vis the dcs. The regional disequilibium of the international economic relation was not favorable to the respectively fitted restructuration of the two sides. We feel convinced the crucial utility of the more diversified cooperation between korea and his principal partners. It is quite necessary the transition of the trade structure from the "over-dependancy" (usa and japan) to the diversification in order to improuve the relation korea-cee which is now very "under-exploited". We reconfirm the potential utility of the both intra- and inter- industrial cooperations between the two sides within the process of their "industrial sophis- tication" (nics) and their positive adjustment (dcs and especially cee)

Abstract:

Gall, Allister Thomas. "Towards a cinema of imperfection : participatory film as research." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/5222.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD is a practice as research interrogation of the emancipatory potential of the idea of imperfection. It is framed around the key leading question: ‘How can the generation of imperfect praxis – cultural production in and through social dialogues challenging notions of technical expertise – affirm emancipatory value in a film practice? The thesis documents the development of a participatory film practice, operating in-between d.i.y subcultural activity and practice as research. The film component of the submission engages with the problems involved in representing and authenticating the collective dimension of participatory filmmaking. The emancipatory potential of imperfection has been explored via a broad range of interdisciplinary participatory practices. The core project is Imperfect Cinema, an open-access micro-cinema collective, which navigated the intersection between film and do-it-yourself punk. This interplay between the contested idea of punk and its inherent activism, with the democratic/accessible implications of audio-visual media, is seen as an exemplary site for examining, and dismantling the boundaries between disciplines. In this sense, the nature of the work can be seen as being ‘in-disciplinary’ (Rancière 2008), requiring a mobility and responsiveness to the emergence of contemporary participatory and collaborative processes. The concept of imperfection draws from punk as a set of d.i.y methodological practices and is key to understanding and developing participatory cinema. Imperfection, as a generative conceptual tool, can be described as incorporating and examining methods ‘against methods’ (Feyerabend 1988) in order to acknowledge the uncertainty and fluidity of participatory work. This forms my understanding of what I term imperfect praxis. This praxis requires the emancipatory potential of imperfection to be easily communicable and accessible to different kinds of participants. The emergence of imperfect praxis developed out of collective social spaces where a kind of knowledge can be explored through collaborative and participatory interactions and dialogues, situated and understood through historical, contextual, personal and shared experiences. This thesis consequently represents a ‘moment in time’ in my methodological development, providing me with the structure to identify and disseminate the practice as research.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes how I took part in a series of collaborations with dancers Danai Pappa and Katie Hall, musician George Williams and video artist Julie Kuzminska. To realise our collaborations, I built electronic sculptural instruments from junk using bricolage, the act of subversion, skip diving and appropriation. From an auto-ethnographic viewpoint, I explored how collaborations began, how relationships developed and how various levels of expertise across different disciplines were negotiated. I examined how the documentation of the performances related to, and could be realised as, video art in their own right. I investigated the themes of work, labour and effort that are used in the process of producing and documenting these works in order to better understand how to ‘create’. I analysed the gender dynamics that existed between my collaborators and myself, which led to the exploration of issues around interaction and intimacy, democratic roles and live art. The resulting works challenged gender stereotypes, the notion of what a musical instrument can be and how sound is produced through action/interaction. I found that reflective time was imperative; serendipity, constant awareness of one’s environment, community and intimate relationships greatly enhanced the success of the collaborations. Instruments became conduits and instigators with shifting implied genders based on their context or creative use. As well as sound being a product of movement, effort and interaction, I realised it was also an artefact of the instruments.

Abstract:
D.I.N.’s activity is inserted in the sub-sector of animal feed manufacture. It develops and produces its own range of premixes, starter foods and specialties for pigs, poultry and cattle and markets raw materials for the manufacture of animal feed. The main objective of this project is to improve the distribution in order to minimize the associated costs. To do this, we started by defining the problem and knowing all the restrictions associated with it, gathering information to create a database, and finally finding opportunities for improvement and proving their quality. Through the creation of a heuristic adapted to the problem in question, it was possible to reduce distribution costs by 15%. Having also proved that not always what you think that makes sense will be the best option.

The master of contemporary management, Peter Douclack, in his book of society of post-capitalism, forethoughtfully indicated that knowledge is an only meaningful one of the economic resources in the future, it will hundred-percent change the existent economic systems and social circumstances, and it form new standard with the competitive advantage of various kinds of enterprises in the near future. The thesis uses Systematic Design Method to analyze and establish a platform for the industrial designers. By sharing and communicating social groups of knowledge with the knowledge, I wish that it can help the industrial designers have more various thinking directions in their design works and emphasize the useful connections both of them. The terminal goal is a global design, in the other words, the design is borderless. In the process of the research, I used the systematic design principle to construct the functional choices which are needed by the social groups of industrial designers and discuss the best of model of them.

Hence, this study explores the most important attributes of service and commodity, the resulted interest of consumption, and the customer's perceived value for baking D.I.Y workshops based on the theoretical view of means-end chains theory and adopted the soft laddering technique and the purposively sampling method to conduct interviews of 60 consumers that ever participated the baking D.I.Y workshops within one year. The study analyzed these transcripts of interview through the content analyses method, and in order to confirm the consistency of data classification by calculating the reliability of classification and the internal consistency. In addition, this study also used the implication matrix and the hierarchical value map to show the strength or weakness relationships and explained the theoretical conclusions and practical meaning among the concepts of classification. The study results found consumers gained these mainly consequences or benefits (getting the steps to explain the process, clear classification, problem assistance and resolution, improving food safety, improving the preservation of finished products) and the mainly final values (giving the customer a sense of security, a sense of belonging, being respected), were through the important attributes (all kinds of ingredients, serious staffs, science and technology auxiliary teaching). Finally, the results of this study are expected to as an important managerial reference and assist the baking D.I.Y workshop operators to plan marketing promotion strategies, to improve service processes, or to design related products in the further.

This case study is based on a single manufacturer in association with the Taiwanese DIY(Do It Yourself;DIY)Power Tools Industry. The findings of this study show that the Taiwanese DIY Power Tools manufactures are facing an industrial and ecological transformation which is gradually transferring from the low added-value of original equipment manufacturing OEM(Original Equipment Manufacturing;OEM)to the high added-value owner brand manufacture OBM(Original Brand Manufacturing;OBM). In addition, they have tried to integrate the value chain in the industry by shortening the distance from the manufacturers to the end users or consumers. During the transformation process, firms build their core competence through organizational learning within each stage, and through the accumulation of the learning activities and arrangement as to develop the core competence for the next stage. When firms are facing a threat from the turbulence of industrial environment, they sometimes move their model of operation using the renewal process. They often move their production base abroad to prolong the industrial life so they may duplicate their existing model.

Abstract:

It is part of a sociomusicology field study consisting in interviews with participants in the Quebec straight edge subculture. It is interested in the development of straight edge culture in the context of Quebec and its organization on the margins of the mainstream cultural industry. It also explores the relationship of this subculture with the Quebec hardcore scene. This thesis examines the perception of subcultural identity and the representation of the straight edge value system amongst subcultural participants. It also explores, through the analysis of the participants' discourses, their conception of mainstream society, power structures and dominant ideologies in order to understand their conceptions of resistance. The thesis then looks at the aesthetic characteristics of the straight edge hardcore genre through its musical parameters and the production and use of the voice in this genre. Finally, it is shown that hardcore music supports and sustains straight edge subcultural resistance through various performances, compositional and scenic strategies, supported by the vocal and musical parameters of the genre, lyrics, as well as the context of the live concert.

Abstract:
Punk rock provided not only a watershed of creativity, innovation and a do-it-yourself spirit to a culture saturated in the mainstream, it physically brought like-minded people together in a community, or rather extended family, which in today’s hyper-d.i.y. culture, is progressively declining. As early as the 1940s, theorists such as Adorno and Horkheimer warned us about alienation in a society increasingly dependent on technology. By looking to punk, and other resilient and robust counter-cultures, perhaps we can find solutions to the pitfalls of the ‘culture industry’ (Adorno, Horkheimer, 1944). My thesis, consisting of a feature-length documentary film and textual analysis, is a culmination of: ethnographic research into the punk scene in my own community; theoretical research into the sociology, ethnography and subculture theory; and my own subjectivity. My personal findings are presented to offer insight into punk philosophy and to spur discourse, rather than deliver an objective account or didactic reproach.
