Sundqvist, Martina, and Natsinet Selemun. "A Study Comparing R&D Clusters in India." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-149779.

Full text
Abstract:
Observed trends in R&D expenditures reveal that the quantity and geographical distribution of such investments has changed over the years. Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) are increasingly spending money on R&D investments, as they must continuously upgrade their processes, products and services for establishing long-term success in today’s increasingly competitive landscape. In the mist of this, MNEs from developed countries are increasingly making R&D investments in emerging markets. India and China has in this regard be termed “hotspots” and do today house several R&D clusters. Given the important role of R&D and the changing patterns of such investments,  the following thesis aims to address four related research gaps: (1) the limited understanding of how MNEs make location choices, (2) the limited recognition of the inherent differences between research and development oriented activities and how such differences impact location choices, (3) the relatively limited attention scholars have given India, although this country is attracting significant amounts of R&D investments, and (4) the limited understanding of how emerging markets differ on a sub-national level. Based on these issues, the following research question has been formulated: What are the differences and similarities between R&D city clusters in India, that are significant from a western R&D investment perspective?   The purpose of this research question is three-fold. It firstly serves to encourage the integration of International Business (IB) and Economic Geography (EG) literature for better understanding location choices for economic activities. Secondly, it serves to encourage researchers to acknowledge and take into account the inherent difference between research and development activities. And thirdly, it serves to highlight that regional variation exist in emerging markets on a sub-national level. A sub purpose of this is to encourage more research on India.   For addressing the research question in matter, this thesis has studied Bangalore and Gurgaon which are two growing clusters in India. They have been studied through a qualitative research methodology where interviews have been combined with secondary sources for understanding their differences and similarities, and subsequently their strengths and weaknesses from a research and development perspective respectively. By looking at factor-, demand-, industry-, firm rivalry- , network- and policy conditions, it has been found that several areas of similarities and differences exist between the two clusters. In regards to similarities, both have similar levels of costs in terms of human capital; both cities receive support from the national government and both cities largely serve customers across the world, including India, and do thus both provide environments where there is to some degree a pressure from sophisticated demand conditions to be more innovative. In regards to differences, Bangalore has relatively more talented human capital available; Bangalore is dominated by the IT industry whereas Gurgaon is not clearly dominated by a single industry; Bangalore has more proactive support from its local policy makers; Bangalore has more local network linkages whilst Gurgaon has more global network linkages; and lastly, Gurgaon has more local rivalry. Based on these similarities and differences, it has been argued that Gurgaon is a relatively better location for both research and development oriented R&D investments from a telecom industry perspective.   Essentially strong enough evidence for the identified similarities and differences has not always been found due to limited data. They are nevertheless indications of regional variations that could serve as a basis for future research to have a closer look at. As indications of similarities and differences that affect the location choice of research and development activities differently has been found - using an approach integrating insights from IB and EG - this paper has served its purpose in terms of encouraging further research related to identified research gaps.

Gustafsson, Mattias. "Monte Carlo simulations of D-mesons with extended targets in the PANDA detector." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Kärnfysik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-295024.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the PANDA experiment, proton anti-proton collisions will be studied in order to gain knowledge about the strong interaction. One interesting aspect is the production and decay of charmed hadrons. The charm quark is three orders of magnitude heavier than the light up- and down-quarks which constitue the matter we consist of. The detection of charmed particles is a challenge since they are rare and often hidden in a large background. There will be three different targets used at the experiment; the cluster-jet, the untracked pellet and the tracked pellet. All three targets meet the experimental requirements of high luminosity. However they have different properties, concerning the effect on beam quality and the determination of the interaction point. In this thesis, simulations and reconstruction of the charmed D-mesons using the three different targets have been made. The data quality, such as momentum resolution and vertex resolution has been studied, as well as how the different targets effect the reconstruction efficiency of D-meson have been analysed. The results are consistent with the results from a similar study in 2006, but provide additional information since it takes the detector response into account. Furthermore, a new target distribution have been implemented in the software package. This is the first results obtained from a cylindrical target distribution. The results are very important for PANDA since they show the limitations of different target types regarding the possibilities to reduce background. Simulations with the new target distribution have been made for all three targets and the results are presented.

Abstract:
Microbial metabolites regain interest due to its bioavailability, target specificity and chemical diversity, but the biosynthetic pathways remain silenced under culture conditions. A strategy to obtain them is the over expression of regulatory genes. Bio-products laboratory at USP has been working with Streptomyces olindensis, products of Cosmomycin D, an antitumoral molecule with a distinctive glycosylation pattern. S. olindensis genome was sequenced and submitted to NCBI (JJOH00000000) and employing antiSMASH server 33 secondary metabolite related clusters were identified. Known pathways were found such as genes for melanin production, Geosmin and others. Additionally, a comparative genomic approach was used to characterize the 22 biosynthetic unknown pathways described in S. olindensis. Subsequently, Aminocyclitol and Polyketide Type I were chosen to evaluated, over expressing the regulatory genes, leading to the compound detection in regular culture conditions.

Dang, Rani.

Full text
Abstract:

Muthukrishnan, Gayathri. "Utilizing Hierarchical Clusters in the Design of Effective and Efficient Parallel Simulations of 2-D and 3-D Ising Spin Models." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/9944.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work, we design parallel Monte Carlo algorithms for the Ising spin model on a hierarchical cluster. A hierarchical cluster can be considered as a cluster of homogeneous nodes which are partitioned into multiple supernodes such that communication across homogenous clusters is represented by a supernode topological network. We consider different data layouts and provide equations for choosing the best data layout under such a network paradigm. We show that the data layouts designed for a homogeneous cluster will not yield results as good as layouts designed for a hierarchical cluster. We derive theoretical results on the performance of the algorithms on a modified version of the LogP model that represents such tiered networking, and present simulation results to analyze the utility of the theoretical design and analysis. Furthermore, we consider the 3-D Ising model and design parallel algorithms for sweep spin selection on both homogeneous and hierarchical clusters. We also discuss the simulation of hierarchical clusters on a homogeneous set of machines, and the efficient implementation of the parallel Ising model on such clusters.
