Rouault, Thierry. "Les mécanismes de la haine antisémite et antimaçonnique dans les pamphlets d' Edouard Drumont." Paris 7, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA070074.

Full text
Abstract:
Mechanisms of the hatred anti-semite and antimasonic in the lampoons of Edouard Drumont and his heirs Such is the title of our thesis. This study is very related to a literary and linguistic analysis of the drumontian speech. Which are the mechanisms which it uses to convince his readers which the Republic is with the hands of the Jews and the free-masons (lexicon chosen, rhetorical figures). The personality of Drumont was also studied for better understanding what defines an anti-semite and how its psychology acts on its writings (paranoia, fascination for the secrecy). We also chose to work on the heirs to Drumont (Anatole France, George Bernanos, Charies Maurras, Henry Coston Lucien Rebatet, Robert Faurisson and Paul Rassinier). We did not want to draw up a catalogue of the heirs anti-semites to Drumont but we selected a corpus of their writings to perceive what could be attached directly to the lampoons of the pope of the French anti-semitism. We attached a great importance to the analysis of the mechanisms of the judeo-masonic hatred and the myth of the plot while paying a detailed attention with the genesis of the complotist myth (with an specific analysis of the hoax the Protocols of Wise of Sion). We wanted to show that the drumontian speech prepared the French to accept the policy of Vichy and considerably transformed the collective memory of our country starting from stereotypes

Bratten, Joanna K. "Representations of adultery and regeneration in selected novels of Ford, Lawrence, Waugh and Greene." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6723.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of how the themes of adultery and regeneration are interwoven and explored by selected English novelists in the first half of the twentieth century. It is essential to establish that Ford, Lawrence, Waugh and Greene do not adhere to the ‘archetypal' pattern of the adultery novel established in the nineteenth century and, in fact, turn that pattern on its head. Ford's The Good Soldier and Parade's End provide two differing perspectives. The first uses adultery as a metaphor for the disintegration of English society, mirroring the social disintegration that accompanied the First World War; Parade's End, however, presents an adulterous relationship as being a regenerative force in the post-war society. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover also uses an adulterous relationship as a means of addressing the need for social, and national, regeneration in the inter-war years. Waugh's A Handful of Dust presents a woman's adultery as the ruin of not only a good man, but also civilisation in general; Brideshead Revisited is more religious in tone and traces the spiritual regeneration of its central character, whose conversion, ironically, is made possible through his adulterous relationship. Similarly, Greene's The Heart of the Matter and The End of the Affair portray the process of spiritual regeneration; in both novels this movement towards salvation is intertwined with an exploration of adulterous love. The ultimate question probed in this thesis is how the twentieth century novel of adultery overturns the traditional literary approach to the subject. Adulterous unions and illegitimate children are no longer presented as being exclusively socially destabilising or subversive in these novels; most intriguingly significant is that, in some of these novels, the illegitimate child becomes a symbol of hope, and, indeed, of regeneration.

Cook, Justine Denise. "Constructing Britain's road network : the scientific governance of British roads and their users, 1900-1963." Thesis, University of Kent, 2018. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/69378/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that the period 1900-1963 may be seen as one in which various models for the governance of roads and their users were developed. Demands for governance came from road campaigners and governmental bodies; these various groups called for, and attempted to implement, such governance in various ways. Of all these methods, scientific governance, via experiment and road network architecture, came decisively to supervene. The development of centralised and localised forms of governance, channelled through the civil and traffic engineering implemented by its County Surveyors, facilitated the state governance of Britain's road network and its users. The co-operation of road users was vital to the success of this state governance. Previously a law unto themselves, road users (most especially motorists) were self-governed by a gentlemanly code of tacit rules of the road. Overhauling the mindset and behaviour of road users first required the reform of the systematic structures of highway administration, along with legislative enforcement. This, however, was dependent upon the premise of central governance and thus government acceptance of roads as a national responsibility. This state of affairs brought with it two important factors. First, the financial means to fund road improvement measures was provided. Second, centres of scientific investigations were established, and credible methods developed, to explore advanced methods of construction and systems of traffic control. Understanding the interaction of roads, vehicles, and users was fundamental to the successful implementation of scientific governance. Roads were a socio-technical problem that required a scientific solution, both in terms of their physical construction and in terms of the ways in which they were used, and used safely. Science was in-built into in the driving experience through such innovations as the use of white lines, the implementation of speed limits, road layouts and road signs. Together, these and other developments constructed the British road network, and worked as means of governing user behaviour. The result of all these factors and developments was the State-based, scientific governance of British roads and their users.

Abstract:
In 1902, Larz Anderson III, a Washington diplomat, and his wife, Isabel Weld Perkins Anderson, a Boston author, commissioned the Boston architects Arthur Little and Herbert W. C. Browne to design their winter residence in the District of Columbia. Completed in 1905, this Beaux-Arts mansion now serves as an historic house museum and as the national headquarters for the Society of the Cincinnati, a patriotic organization established by Revolutionary War officers in 1783. Larz Anderson was a member and a descendant of one of the founders of the Society. The fact that Anderson House was designated a national historic landmark in 1996 indicates that it is worthy of national recognition, yet the architectural and historical significance of this socially and politically important building has not been fully investigated. This dissertation examines the edifice by focusing on its patrons, families, architects, design, art collection, and mural paintings.

Paris, Heather. "The pictured child in Victorian philanthropy 1869-1908." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2001. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/9727/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study sets out to investigate the nature of the Victorian child's standing in society using pictorial means. It takes the view that the picture, or visual image, has something important to tell us about attitudes towards childhood, and how children were regarded as a group, between 1869 and 1908. As a piece of scholarship, it is situated between the disciplines of art history and social history. Little work has been done on the child's visual representation, and its contribution to the historical record. The rich visual material that forms part of the archive of Victorian philanthropy in general, and temperance in particular, remains largely untapped. The study is a response to this scholarly neglect, with the uses made by charity of the pictured child forming its central site of inquiry. Philanthropic images of childhood will be set in their pictorial context by reference to their appearance in other parts of the public domain. The history of the relationship between adults and children has been called `age relations' by one historian. This study will apply general and specific practical approaches, drawn from critical visual techniques, to age relations, leading to an interpretation of how Victorian childhood was pictured for its audiences. Images will be approached as pictorial puzzles, and priority will be given to those solutions which formed part of the historical record. The main analytical tool to be used is adopted from critical theory's notion of the metapicture. This acknowledges the capacity of the visual image to tell us about itself when viewed in relation to other images. It will be combined with established art historical approaches to the picture. The study discusses the range of contemporaneous meanings assigned to the picturing of childhood, and how the relationship between some of these meanings held significant implications for children's social standing. Its sustained approach to visual interpretation can be said to uncover the extent to which conflicting expectations were placed upon children by the sacrifice of the real to the ideal in adult notions of childhood.

Cross, G. E. "The internationalism of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1882-1933." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.598182.

Abstract:
This dissertation uses long-neglected or forgotten speeches and articles by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his pre-presidential life to provide a new and comprehensive narrative of his internationalist thinking as it developed to 1933. Its three parts cover FDR’s life chronologically. The first part describes the impact of his background and upbringing in the period 1882 to 1917. It examines the influence of key individuals such as Theodore Roosevelt, Alfred Thayer Mahan and Woodrow Wilson. The second part covers the years 1917 to 1920 and includes FDR’s experiences during World War I, the fight for the League of Nations and the presidential campaign of 1920. It was in this period that he developed new and lasting ideological positions in the debates on his country’s political, military, economic and moral connections to the rest of the world. The third part covers the years 1921 to 1933. Although this period saw no important new thinking, international problems, Democratic Party divisions and an apparently successful Republican foreign policy during the 1920s forced FDR to develop important communication strategies for his internationalism. In conclusion the study argues that FDR took a well developed internationalist worldview to the White House in 1933 and that knowledge of this is useful for tracing the subsequent development of his outlook.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the context and some of the main sources resulting in Daniel David Palmer’s (1845-1913) formulation of chiropractic. Born in Canada, Palmer moved to the United States after the end of the Civil War, a period characterized by severe poverty. The precarious conditions extended also to medicine favoring the development of non-conventional practices, such as Thomson and magnetic therapy, in addition to homeopathic medicine, which had a strong presence in this period. Palmer met Paul Caster (1827-1881), a practitioner of magnetic therapy who treated patients without drugs, but through manipulation only. Interested in Caster’s successful methods Palmer became his disciple and worked for nine years with him. Palmer further founded a small journal, The Magnetic Cure, which served to divulgate his ideas on magnetic therapy. At the same time, strong hints indicate that Palmer devoted himself to a more thorough study of anatomy and physiology, including other sources, as e.g. osteopathy. Palmer finally presented his own healing method in 1895, which he called chiropractic. Also chiropractic dismissed pharmacological treatment, being that diseases were attributed to spine misalignment resulting in compression of nerves and blockade of the vital nervous flow. Many of the reasons that led Palmer to formulate chiropractic are poorly understood and are signaled out and analyzed in the present study

Abstract:
In the so-called postmodernist or even poststructuralist context, we come too often to the conclusion that a concept, an hypothesis, a text or even an action is aporetic, without pausing to inquire into its traces and its histories, the lexical richness that constitutes it, the endless semantics that provoke it, without considering the syntactic and contextual practice that composes and decomposes it. That is why we propose an exploration (although not an exhaustive one) of different aporetic figures that simultaneously animate and threaten Beckett's and Derrida's work, such as death, ignorance, aphasia, suspension, noise, chaos, destinerrance, and the hymen, among others
