Abstract:

This essay in musicology is combined with a CD-recording of piano improvisations. Its purpose is, on the one hand, to examine some of the ideas permeating piano improvisation during the first part of the nineteenth century, and, on the other, to find ways to apply these nineteenth century ideas of improvising to modern piano playing. The artistic part of the work is as important as the theoretical, and the two strands are supporting and reinforcing each other.

The first section of the text focuses on preluding – that is, a genre of improvisation. The second section investigates some aspects of the improvising of Franz Liszt – that is, different types of improvisation as practised by an important nineteenth century musician. The instructional music literature written by Carl Czerny is the basic source of reference in both portions.

The text and the recordings of my piano improvisations aim to show that monothematic strategies are simple and useful tools for improvising, regardless of tonal language used.

Half of the recordings consist of improvisations of separate pieces in a contemporary musical language. The other half are preludes, interludes and a cadenza improvised in the context of compositions by Liszt, Chopin, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Grieg.

Noorduin, Marten Albert. "Beethoven's tempo indications." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2016. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/beethovens-tempo-indications(61262f19-aa03-47db-823e-ad5d37e38659).html.

Full text
Abstract:
Beethoven’s tempo indications have been the subject of much scholarly debate, but a coherent understanding of his intended tempos has not yet emerged. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, some of the discussion has been based on unreliable sources, or an unrepresentative sample of sources. Secondly, the substantial differences between tempo preferences in the early nineteenth century and now has made these tempo indications difficult to approach for musicians in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Thirdly, discussions of Beethoven’s tempo have typically focussed on works in one particular genre. This thesis overcomes these limitations by incorporating all of Beethoven’s works, and rooting the whole research in a wide variety of sources from the eighteenth and nineteenth century that have a plausible relationship with Beethoven’s practice. In particular the metronome marks by Beethoven, as well as those from his close contemporaries Carl Czerny, Ignaz Moscheles, and Karl Holz, provide great insight into the composer’s sense of tempo. By using as many sources on Beethoven’s tempo as possible, this approach makes reasonable estimations of the actual speeds that Beethoven had in mind for his works. Furthermore, it also allows an exploration of the musical intuitions that are the root cause of these speeds.

Abstract:
The potential for an adaptive response to global climatic change was evaluated for an annual C$ sb3$ weed, Brassica juncea, by performing a selection on fecundity for eight generations. During the selection, atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature were gradually increased from current levels (370 $ rm mu L cdot L sp{-1}$ CO$ sb2$, 20$ sp circ$C) to conditions predicted during the next century by climate models (650 $ rm mu L cdot L sp{-1}$ CO$ sb2$, 23.6$ sp circ$C) including heat stress events at 32$ sp circ$C/26$ sp circ$C day/night), At the end of the selection, a reciprocal transplant experiment was conducted to identify genetic differences between control selection lines of plants and those selected under increasing CO$ sb2$ and temperature. I observed a genetic adaptation of early vegetative growth elevated CO$ sb2$ and temperature, which resulted in to 63% more biomass and 11% higher photosynthetic rates. Reproductive biomass, however, was decreased during the selection, mainly due to temperature stress, which disrupted flower development and induced strong maternal effects, counteracting the selection on fecundity.

Abstract:
The teaching of Carl Czemy was influential in the first half of the nineteenth century. His Complete Theoretical and Practical Piano Forte School and its supplement, The Art ofPlaying the Ancient and Modern Piano Forte Works, are especially relevant to the performance of Beethoven's piano sonatas. Much of the information in this monumental treatise reveals how Beethoven would have performed his sonatas. His pedalling techniques, for example, are similar to those described in Czerny's treatise. Although The Art was published in 1846, some of the ideas in tl-ds book date back to Czemy's Haslinger II edition of the late 1820s, thereby showing a. certain consistency over a period of about twenty years. Most of Czemy's teaching on the performance of Beethoven's piano sonatas, hs recorded in his piano treatise, stem from Beethoven's own practice. However, he sometimes altered Beethoven's directions because he considered his solution to be better (such as the fingering. in the trio of Op. 2/l/iii), or because they did not conform to contemporary performing styles, or simply because they did not suit the more resonant pianos of his day.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a quantitative study with elements of qualitative analysis. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate WHAT was written about Ukraine's independence 1917 in Swedish press 1917–1918. The qualitative part of the survey was intended to answer the question if the newspaper's political attitude influenced the news reports during the chosen period. The exact periodization was determined to be between March 1, 1917 and June 30, 1918. This periodization was chosen because of the March Revolution in 1917, which triggered independence declarations in a number of countries oppressed by Moscow, who now saw their chance of freedom. June 1918 became the end of the investigation because it was just when the peace agreement between Ukraine and the Soviet Union was signed. The source material has been chosen to represent a multitude of ideological orientations. It was liberal, moderate, conservative, liberal and left-wing orientations. The source material consisted of newspaper articles from the following newspapers: Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet, Göteborgs Aftonblad, Svenska Dagbladet, Dalpilen, Kalmar Tidning and Norrskensflamman. Quantitative methodology was used on the source material. This method consisted of a reviewing of newspaper articles in searching of news reports from Ukraine or articles which had something to do with the events in Ukraine. Every newspaper was searched day after day. The crawled material was presented in two chapters representing different periods. The first chapter of the results presented the results from 1917, and more precisely from March to December 1917. The second chapter presented the results from 1918, but also from December 1917, that is, the result from December 1917 through June 1918. The whole result was then discussed in a separate chapter where the qualitative analysis was also discussed. The result of the quantitative analysis showed that it has been written relatively sparcely about Ukraine's independence although the volume of articles increased from December 1917 and even more in 1918. Sometimes there were articles on the first page. But for the most part, the articles with Ukraine issues were placed among other foreign articles. It was also found in the survey that it was the first World War that drew attention to the newspapers, even though the events in Petrograd and then in Ukraine took more space. This survey also showed that what was written about Ukraine's independence was also what appears in the reference literature. The news reports reported how Ukraine proclaimed independence in March 1917 and later on proclaimed an independent republic in November 1917 when the Bolsheviks conducted their coup d'état in Petrograd. The newspapers also wrote how the Russian Communists sent a declaration of war to Ukraine in December 1917 and about the war that followed. The articles also tell us how negotiations on Ukraine Peace went on in Brest-Litovsk, and how they ended up with alliance between Germany and Ukraine with the campaign against the communists. It was told how the German army marched into Ukraine to free it from the bolsheviks. Until May 1918 there were battles between the German-Ukrainian Army and the Communists. In June 1918 the peace agreement was signed and this survey’s investigation ended. The survey showed that it was written about Ukraine's independence in all newspapers. Dagens Nyheter had the most news articles linked to the survey. Although the number of articles was not subject for analysis in this survey. The qualitative analysis was based on using Höjelid's theoretical concepts "positive sound" and "negative sound" on the quantitative analysis material. The qualitative analysis’ result showed that it was almost impossible to see the differences between the newspapers because the articles were traded between the newspapers, i.e. the content was copied straight away. It should be noted that not all content was the subject of copying between the newspapers. Copying occurred to a greater extent, but there were still original articles derived from the respective newspaper. Most of the articles were also direct telegrams that were communicated abroad to the newspaper's editors. A lot of these telegrammic articles were sent with a purpose to mislead society. These angled articles were published without further examination in Swedish press. There were articles from, for example, Dagens Nyheter whose editors noted the "strange Petrograd reports" and informed about it for the purpose of enlightening the public. However, as most newspapers were occupied with World War I, as was shown in the source material, the newspaper editorial office was less interested in other foreign events. Therefore, such angled articles could be found in Swedish press on a larger scale.

The piano etudes composed by Carl Czerny (1791-1857) have been widely used as the technic builder. The common practice of asking students to play each piece sequentially in each opus ignores the fact that the order of the pieces is not totally relevant to the degree of difficulty in some sets. This study questions this ineffective way of practicing Czerny etudes and reorganizes these pieces in each selected etude books. The users can thus choose proper pieces according to the technical demands in repertoires without practicing aimlessly. As an example for illustrating the pedagogical approach mentioned above, the writer analyzes four selected sets of etudes by Czerny: 100 Exercises in Progressive Order op.139,30 op.740. The effort is put into two parts. First, each piece from each etude book is categorized into one or two types of four motor skill categories. Pieces containing three or more types of motor skills are classified as "hybrid". The result of both hybrid and non-hybrid groups are presented in tabular form. Users who have problems executing some kinds of motor skills in their piano repertoires can choose appropriate Czerny etudes from these tables to improve the deficiency. For those who do not have any specific goal in mind to make a connection between the etudes and repertoires, choosing pieces from the "hybrid"tables also offers an opportunity to practice several skills at one time. The second step is the analysis of the non-motor skill items in these selections. These items include the harmony, tonality, rhythmic pattern, texture, articulation, form, keyboard range used, tempo ,and musical terms. The results are also listed on tables for easy assess. One can practice pieces which contain particular features other than the single consideration of motor skill types in order to take advantage of these Czerny etudes with more pedagogically sound approaches.

Abstract:
abstract: Positioned between Beethoven and Liszt in the golden period, Carl Czerny (1791-1857) played a significant historical role in the area of piano pedagogy. Many pianists are familiar with and have played Czerny’s études, or technical exercises. However, few delve into Czerny’s piano works for performance, including eleven piano sonatas and more than 180 works titled variations. The project at hand examines three of Carl Czerny’s variation works for piano: Opus 33 (on a theme of Rode), Opus 281 (on a theme from Bellini’s Norma, in its solo piano version), and Opus 292 (on an original theme). These works are explored from both compositional and performance perspectives. After a brief biography of Czerny that places his variations into the context of his compositional output, the three variation sets are given analytical description. A chapter on the “Rode Variations” focuses on the technical and musical challenges for the pianist. An important conclusion reached is that these somewhat-neglected works might be attractive to pianists looking to expand their repertoire.

As a student of Ludwig van Beethoven, he devoted his life to piano teaching and he trained the famous pianists and educators such as Franz Liszt, Theodor Leschetizky and Theodor Kullack. Czerny was a prolific composer because he created many of piano etudes for students including amateurs and professionals. His etudes can guide students from beginner level all the way to professional level. This paper discusses how to give assistance for students in piano learning and how to make the sight- reading easier thus letting them feel more interested to practice. Furthermore, this paper would suggest some points for improvements to develop their musicality. The etude book op. 599 “Practical method for beginners on the pianoforte,” was created for beginner level and it is considered to be the most popular training book throughout 250 years. It would best match the students’ level; therefore, it would address the specific needs of the learner.

Abstract:
Carl Czerny (1791-1857), whose works number over one thousand opuses, had an active career a composer, pianist, exponent of Beethoven, piano teacher, and theorist. He has received lots of criticism both during his lifetime and ever since. Even nowadays, though many of his piano exercises are popular items for many teachers and pupils ranging from beginners to virtuosi, Czerny is still rated as a master of mechanical works that focus mainly on the right hand. This study will argue that Czerny is much underrated, particularly as a pedagogue, and aims to find out what are the underlying principles that Czerny embedded in his piano pedagogical works, what made them indispensable in the teaching of piano playing and to what degree they present other musical elements which are not purely mechanical in order to reassess Czerny?s achievements in the field of piano pedagogy. The discussion is based on the original English edition of Czerny?s Opus 500 Complete Theoretical and Practical Piano Forte School (1839), its Supplement, as well as Czerny?s other pedagogical works, such as Op. 139, Op. 299, Op. 365, Op. 755 and Op. 821. In addition, other selected pedagogical works and representative keyboard method books and exercises (excluding works for the organ) by other authors up to Czerny?s time are discussed for enriching the discussion. Through a detailed analysis of Czerny?s Opus 500, this study identifies fifteen parameters in his teaching sequences that range from beginner to virtuoso and the findings are clarified and contextualized within the field of 19th century piano pedagogy. These fifteen parameters are also exemplified in four selected opuses of Czerny, and through the ?Exam Pieces? of The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. These are used to justify the applicability of the parameters in the learning sequences intrinsic to the graded piano qualifying examinations nowadays. It is argued that in view of the rich pedagogical content of Czerny?s work both technically and stylistically, together with the systematic teaching sequences that he presented in his piano pedagogical works, Czerny?s contribution to the art of keyboard playing should be well acknowledged.

Many different forms of design in spectrometers and hyperspectral imager. In this paper, we choose Czerny-Turner type to analyze which uses more elements than other typical type. We need to consider several factors that including the location of the light source, mirrors’ shape, grating’s pitch, and distance between component to component. The image equality can be changed by one of all this factors. We optimize the model that is based on Czerny-Turner type by changing those factors and use different incident light’s way. By using optical software “Code V”, we can get wavelength information through two important software function, “Spot diagram” and “MTF (Modulation Transfer Function).” And the analysis of resolution and resolving power tell us the imaging quality of our system. Consequently, adopting our design to compose a Czerny-Turner spectrometer can get excellent hyperspectral imaging systems through simple components and accurate calculations.

In piano pedagogy, technical training is considered important at every stage of learning, from simple finger exercise to virtuoso performance. A learner may make use of the piano etudes to overcome the hurdles encountered during the training of various techniques in playing piano. The main purpose of this thesis is to study the teaching of piano etude. In the thesis, the historical development and the classification of piano etudes are explored. As a result of the study, the writer is inclined to divide the etudes into two categories : the etudes for basic technical training and the concert etudes for public performance. Discussions are made on examples from Czerny Etude Op. 821, and Chopin Etudes Op. 10 and Op. 25. The study goes a step further to explore the teaching aspect of the etudes, and to study their resemblance and the differences. In terms of the historical development of the piano etudes, the writer has found that the interpretations of the piano etudes by the composers themselves may vary in accordance to the different social backgrounds and circumstances in the different periods. Thus, through the classification and definition of the piano etudes by the scholars, a piano learner may get useful in-depth understanding of the characteristics and functions of the etudes, and thereby be able to set forth a proper learning plan to practice, and to achieve excellence through gradual steps. For teaching the piano playing, the writer makes a skill classification based on different music shapes of Czerny Etude Op. 821, and Chopin Etudes Op. 10, and Op. 25. Each skill is presented by an example to illustrate the important aspects of playing and teaching piano.During the study, the writer has found the relative and the distinctive aspects of the etudes in its artistic and creative styles. As far as the relative aspects are concerned, each etude is provided for the purpose of one technique training and is strictly required for the playing speed, also some complementary teaching materials. For the different aspects, each etude serves a different purpose, different music structure and provides a different degree of harmonic using.

Abstract:
Carl Czerny (1791–1857) lived at the turn of the nineteenth century, when the piano underwent significant development as an instrument, and subsequently generated a huge repertoire. While Czerny is mostly remembered for his piano exercises and etudes, his writings about music as well as his works in serious style reveal a man with a sophisticated awareness of the importance of piano technique, entwined with profound musical ideas and an understanding of music that make him a forerunner of the romantic style. This study focuses on Czerny’s Opus 500 Complete Theoretical and Practical Piano Forte School (1839), and its Supplement (1845). Through analysis of the tutorial’s content it attempts to prove the deep connection between piano technique and expressive playing in Czerny’s teaching. The first five chapters of this work compare elements of expressive playing, such as articulation, dynamics and tempo, as presented in different tutorials written before Czerny’s opus 500, clearly relevant to Czerny. The remaining chapters of this study discuss the pedagogical path that Czerny suggests to master those same aspects, especially through scales and scale-based exercises, and through constant attention to improving the listening skills of the student. The purpose of this work is to reassess Czerny as a key figure of modern piano technique, as a teacher and pedagogue able to introduce pianists to mechanical training while honing the essential skills to perform any piece of music in any style expressively.

Abstract:
abstract: Between the years of 1818 and 1833 the Austrian composer, teacher, and pianist, Carl Czerny (1791–1857) wrote one of his greatest compositions, the f minor Grand Piano Sonata, Op.178 for piano four hands. Overshadowed by composers like Ludwig van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and possibly because of Czerny’s prolific pedagogical output, this work has received little scholarly attention and is rarely performed. The aim of my paper is first to provide a concise background of the composer for better insight of his ideas and influences and, second to provide a theoretical framework and analysis of the composition to show how this piece is uniquely set in the musical backdrop among early nineteenth century piano music. Further, I will demonstrate performance concepts and ideas of the composition highlighting his instructional mastery. There are two components for this project including a research paper and a lecture recital. I hope this project could bring more musicians and audiences to Carl Czerny’s serious and concert music as he categorized his music. He had been a great model of true artist, he composes, teaches and perhaps not the greatest promoter of his own music like the contemporaries. However, he devoted most of his life to development of music and the new generation of pianists, which is the most honorable of an individual.

SUMMARY The emerging business models are becoming more and more popular, with the popularity of Internet applications. Such as the 1990's eBay, yahoo-online auction shopping site, followed by 2004 to 2005 the rise of Facebook, Youtube and other community-sharing platform, until 2008 to 2009 the rise of Airbnb and Uber and other shared economic platform. This study observes that early web platforms seem to be mostly praised for their innovation, with little negative news. Nevertheless, in recent years the emerging network platform, such as shared economic platform Airbnb, Uber this type of business model, in addition to innovative elements in its platform, but also derived from many negative criticism. Therefore, this study review the business model, sharing the economy, the platform economy and other related literature, to Uber as the object of analysis, and from consumers perspective, to explore the consumer’s decisive factor to accept the innovative business model. Exploring the elements behind them will affect consumers' willingness to accept innovative business models as an important reference for companies to develop new business models. In this study, the main research method use as the quantitative method, and collect the network questionnaire for the general population of Taiwan as the sample object. A total of valid questionnaires were collected is 162. The study supplemented by SPSS statistical software for validity analysis, reliability analysis and descriptive statistics analysis, and finally the use of EViews statistical software for linear probability model to analyze the sample data. The main results: 1. The people's riding Uber willingness ratio of willing to not willing is about 85.2: 14.8 in Taiwan. In addition, whether the experience of having taken Uber and the frequency of Uber or taxi used would have a significant impact on whether consumers would accept innovative business models. 2. The four key factors that influence the consumer's acceptance of an innovative business model are network effect, customer value proposition, key process, and Externality .

Hamlin, Russell Lawrence. "An investigation of the relationships between mineral nutrition and the phytoextraction of zinc by Indian mustard (Brassica juncea Czern.)." 2002. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI3056234.

Full text
Abstract:
Zinc is the heavy metal occurring in the greatest concentrations in the majority of wastes in modern, industrialized communities and is a common metal found at metal-polluted sites. Phytoextraction is a plant-based remediation technology aimed at the removal of metals from contaminated sites through the use of metal-accumulating plants. Although Indian mustard (Brassica juncea Czern.) has been identified as a moderate accumulator of Zn, little is known about the Zn-phytoextraction potential of this plant and whether or not mineral nutrition could be used to improve plant growth and Zn accumulation under Zn-contaminated conditions. The objectives of this research were to determine how the Zn phytoextraction potential of B. juncea is affected by: (a) the concentration of Zn in the nutrient medium; (b) the alleviation of Zn-induced Fe deficiency; (c) the molar % ratio of NH 4+ to NO3− and (d) the concentration of N and P in the nutrient medium. The pH of nutrient solutions generally decreased with: increasing Zn supply; decreasing Fe supply; and increasing proportion of NH4+-N in nutrient solutions. The ability of B. juncea to phytoextract Zn increased with increasing Zn supply initially, but then leveled off because the increase in shoot Zn concentration was accompanied by a suppression of shoot growth. Zinc-induced Fe deficiency was found to limit the effectiveness of B. juncea to phytoextract Zn, and increased P fertility appeared to exacerbate this problem. Alleviating Fe deficiency with root applied Fe-EDDHA had a limited effect on increasing Zn phytoextraction because Zn accumulation was suppressed with increasing Fe supply. Plants concentrated more Zn in shoots and roots if plants were supplied a high proportion of NO3 −, and increasing NH4+ nutrition enhanced growth. Zinc phytoextraction was maximized if plants were supplied 90% NO3−-N and 10% NH4 +-N. Zinc accumulation in shoots increased with increasing N and P supply, but the effect of N was greater. To the extent that N was a limiting factor for growth, N additions increased plant growth, but growth was not effected by P nutrition. Increased N fertility can increase Zn phytoextraction, but the effect of P nutrition is limited.

This study aims to explore the teaching of two sets of piano etudes, namely, Czerny’s Études de Mécanisme, Op. 849 and Moszkowski’s Vingt Petites Études, Op. 91. This research, being based on the intermediate level skills classification of piano pedagogy literature of domestic and overseas areas, conducts content analysis and qualitative narrative research methods. This thesis is divided into five chapters: the first chapter explains the motivation and purpose of the study, limitations of the study, research methods and steps, and definitions of terms as used in this study. The second chapter expounds the origin and development of piano pedagogy, and through the study of piano playing theories, provides correct methods for piano teachers to use in teaching; by way of summarizing the relevant literature of the evolution and classification of piano etudes, selection of teaching materials and classification of intermediate level skills, increases reference materials for teachers to choose. The third chapter discusses the lives and works of two composers respectively in order to understand their music styles and characteristics. The forth chapter uses content analysis research method to analyze etude contents and playing skills of each etude. The fifth chapter sums up the conclusion of contents discussed all above. The etudes in Czerny’s Op. 849 contain abundant main practicing skills and clear training goals. And the etudes in Moszkowski’s Op. 91 contain a number of skills which are not too difficult to play, with beautiful melodic lines and full of imagination. This study expects to help students understand the certain purpose of playing etudes and connect similar theories learnt previously with skills in order to practice these two works more efficiently. While teaching students to master playing skills, teachers should let students understand the differences of these two composers’ creative and interpretative styles, improve the cognition and mastery of music performance in order to achieve the multiple values of etudes.

Carl Czerny (1791-1857) was an famous Austrian musician in the 18th century across the 19th century . He devoted his entire life to teach and compose etudes systematically, ranging from beginner to advanced level and the degree of piano technique covered is wide. Czerny's “25 Etudes, Op. 748" is designed specifically for exceptional talented young children, particularly of those whose fingers are still unable to play the octave but the piano technique has already pass the beginner level and entering the intermediate level. These etudes are very interesting pieces, encompass various musical expressions and skill categories. The purpose of this research paper is to explore the background of Czerny's life, music and related literatures of Czerny 's "25 Etudes, Op. 748", and analyzes its content and teaching methodology. This study adopts the qualitative "content analysis method".with each piece as analysis unit, uses ‘‘The Analysis Catalogue of Czerny’s for 25 Etudes, Op. 748’’ compiled by writer as the tool of research , and analyzes and discusses the basic structure of the music, the training of playing technique and the key points of teaching. The conclusions of this research study are as follows: Czerny's "25 Etudes, Op. 748" is a piano training material that combines numerous practice techniques. In those 25 etudes, by utilizing tonal arrangement, the type of meter, music structure, music length etc., we can all observe the ideology and ingenuity of Czerny's work. He hopes that this etudes not only can train the agility and technicality of the students' fingers, it also can display the richness of its musical style, expression, melody etc, and help to train the student the ability to play advanced works in the future. Finally, based on the research results, relevant suggestions are proposed for the three areas of piano teaching, future academic research and Taiwan music publishing content.
