Stasinopoulos, Dimitrios I. "Cyriax physiotherapy : a supervised exercise programme and Biopton light for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis." Thesis, Leeds Beckett University, 2005. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.423827.

Abstract:
Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is one of the most common lesions of the arm. Physiotherapy is a conservative treatment that is usually recommended for LE patients and a wide array of physiotherapy treatments is used. Two of the most common physiotherapy treatments for LE are Cyriax physiotherapy and supervised exercise programmes. More recently physiotherapists are able to use a new modality called polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light) for the management of LE. The clinical value of these treatments for LE is not known. The aim of this project was to investigate the clinical use and clinical effectiveness of Cyriax physiotherapy, a supervised exercise programme and polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light) for the treatment of LE. Systematic review (Chapter 2) found that there was strong evidence for the short-term effectiveness of acupuncture for LE. It also found that there was strong evidence that four physiotherapy modalities, low power laser light, ultrasound, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy were not effective treatments for the management of LE. There was insufficient evidence available for other treatments used for LE, such as iontophoresis and home exercise programmes, to judge their effectiveness. Chapter 2 recommended that more evidence is needed for Cyriax physiotherapy, supervised exercise programmes and polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light). It is necessary to establish optimal protocols for these treatments before a suitable clinical trial can be designed. A critical literature review (Chapter 3) found that treatment protocols for Cyriax physiotherapy, supervised exercise programmes and polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light) were mainly derived from the views of advocates of these treatments, based on their personal experience. Two preliminary clinical studies were conducted to pilot the use of treatment protocols derived from the critical review in Chapter 3 on overuses injuries that were similar to LE and were regularly presented to the clinic (Chapter 4). In the first study (section 4.3) Cyriax physiotherapy did not reduce the pain in patellar tendinopathy, while the supervised exercise programme did. In the second study (section 4.4) polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light) reduced nocturnal pain and paraesthesia in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The findings of these two pilot studies should be interpreted cautiously because the number of patients included in the patellar tendinopathy was small and in the CTS study it was not possible to attribute changes to the light per se because the study lacked a control group. Before the effectiveness of these protocols could be tested, a questionnaire survey was conducted to establish the current clinical practices of these physiotherapy treatments for LE. This survey was based on the self-reporting of chartered physiotherapists in Athens using these treatments in their clinical practice (Chapter 5). It may be confidently assumed that the results of the questionnaire present a representative view of current clinical practice of Cyriax physiotherapy, a supervised exercise programme and polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light) on LE at least as these treatments are applied in Athens. How much this reflects usage in the rest of the Greece, Europe, or even the world, is yet to be seen by extending the research. When the effectiveness of Cyriax physiotherapy, a supervised exercise programme and polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light) for LE was compared, the three treatments reduced pain and improved function at the end of the treatment and at any of the follow-up time points (Chapter 6). Whether this is due to placebo effects is not known. The supervised exercise programme produced the largest effect in the short, intermediate and long term (Chapter 6). This finding suggests that, of the three treatments, the supervised exercise programme should be used as a first treatment option when physiotherapists manage LE patients (Chapter 6; Chapter 7). If this is not possible, Cyriax physiotherapy and polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light) may be suitable (Chapter 6; Chapter 7). Although the three treatments are promising interventions for the management of patients with LE, further research is warranted to investigate and confirm the effectiveness of Cyriax physiotherapy, supervised exercise programmes and polarised polychromatic non-coherent light (Bioptron light) in the treatment of impairment and disability resulting from LE.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
This thesis examines the literary journal Horizon, its editor Cyril Connolly, and a selection of its editorial articles, poems, short stories and essays in the context of the Second World War, from 1939-45. Analyses of these works, their representation of wartime experience, and their artistic merit, serve as evidence of a shared and sustained literary engagement with the war. Collectively, they demonstrate Horizon’s role as one of the primary outlets for British literature and cultural discourse during the conflict. Previous assessments of the magazine as an apolitical organ with purely aesthetic concerns have led to enduring critical neglect and misappraisal. This thesis shows that, contrary to the commonly held view, Horizon consistently offered space for political debate, innovative criticism, and war-relevant content. It argues that Horizon’s wartime writing is indicative of the many varied types of literary response to a war that was all but incomprehensible for those who experienced it. These poems, stories and essays offer a distinctive and illuminating insight into the war and are proof that a viable literary culture thrived during the war years. This thesis also argues that Horizon, as a periodical, should be considered as a creative entity in and of itself, and is worthy of being studied in this light. The magazine’s constituent parts, interesting enough when considered separately, are shaped, informed, and granted new shades of meaning by their position alongside other works in Horizon. Chapters in the thesis cover editorials and editing, poetry, short stories, political essays, and critical essays respectively. Analyses of individual works are situated in the context of larger concerns in order to demonstrate the coherence of debate and discourse that characterised Horizon’s wartime run. In arguing that Horizon is a singular creative entity worthy of consideration in its own right, this thesis locates itself within the emerging field of periodical studies. Further, by arguing that the magazine demonstrates the value of Second World War literature, it articulates with other recent attempts to reassess the scope and quality of that literature. More specifically, this thesis offers the first focused and in-depth analysis of Horizon’s formative years.

Crawford, Matthew Roy. "Cyril of Alexandria's Trinitarian theology of Scripture." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3925/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cyril of Alexandria left to posterity a sizable body of exegetical literature. This thesis attempts to reconstruct his theology of Scripture in order to suggest that his exegetical practice is inseparable from, and must be interpreted in light of, his overarching theological vision. I argue that the most important intellectual factor shaping his exegesis is his Christologically focused, pro-Nicene Trinitarianism, an inheritance that he received from fourth-century authors. Cyril’s appropriation of pro-Nicene thought is evident in his theology of revelation and his theology of exegesis. Revelation, in his understanding, proceeds from the Father, through the Son, and in the Spirit, following the order of Trinitarian relations. Moreover, this pattern applies to the inspiration of Scripture as well, insofar as inspiration occurs when the Son indwells human authors by the Spirit and speaks the words of the Father. Corresponding to this movement of God towards humanity in revelation is humanity’s growth in understanding that occurs according to a reverse pattern—in the Spirit, through the Son, unto the Father. This scheme applies broadly to Cyril’s soteriology, but also to his understanding of exegesis, since he regarded biblical interpretation as a means of participating in the divine life. More specifically, this Trinitarian pattern implies that the Spirit is required to read Scripture properly, and that in the act of interpretation the Spirit directs the reader to a Christological reading of Scripture, through which the believer gains a limited but genuine apprehension of the Trinitarian mystery. This process continues until the final eschatological vision when the types and riddles of Scripture will be done away with in light of the overwhelming clarity of the vision of the Father.

Abstract:
The hosting of mega events encapsulates different opportunities and benefits for host countries or regions. Event management constitutes one of the most exciting and fastest growing forms of leisure, business and tourism-related phenomena. Their special appeal stems from the limited duration and innate uniqueness of each event, which distinguishes them from permanent institutions and built attractions. Events and festivals have the ability to attract a large number of visitors for a specific time period to a specific destination. The frequency of events is evident for the success of a tourism destination. The hosting of mega events requires a detailed process of bidding for international events. This study focused on the bidding process for hosting such events, with specific reference to the role of government in the bidding process. The value of this study lies in the key success factors that were identified by a comparative analysis that was done between the FlFA 2006 Soccer Bid between Germany and South Africa. Although South Africa's bid was unsuccessful, the country still delivered an outstanding technical bid and is regarded as a serious competitor for future events. South Africa already proved itself, through hosting the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Two major recommendations were made, including a FlFA World Cup Information Centre and a checklist for successful bidding. The FlFA World Cup Information Centre's aim must be to provide and disseminate information to communities. This will not only encourage community involvement. but also create support for the event. The marketing programme, staff information, maintenance plans, ecological balance, budget concerns, event evaluation process, the role of the organising committee and security matters are the key factors in developing such a centre. The checklist for creating a successful bid cover a number of issues regarding operational planning and management.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the images Cyril of Alexandria uses in expressing his picture of Christ. It is divided into three parts. Part One is comprised of three chapters. Chapter One summarises Cyril's life and ministry, placing these many images within their broadest context. The second chapter explores his understanding of Scripture and his use of passages from especially the Old Testament as illustrations of various components of the Incarnational event. Chapter Three examines the images which have their background in the philosophical discussions concerning place and union. The conclusions reached in Chapters Two and Three develop a foundation on which to build a reconstruction of Cyril's Christology, the ultimate objective of the thesis. Part Two frames the structure by means of an inquiry into Cyril's rejection of Nestorianism and Apollinarianism in Chapters Four and Five, respectively. Not only are the tenets of his rejection of these heresies examined, but also the manner in which he employs images in his discussions of them. Through seeing those Christological pictures which he rejects, we are then in a position to reconstruct his picture of Christ through a reading of his Christological imagery. The third and final part, comprised of three chapters, seeks to extract from Cyril's analogies their Christological content. Chapter Six addresses his use of images to illustrate that Jesus Christ was fully God, homoousios with the Father. The seventh chapter examines his use of analogies to illustrate that Christ was also, simultaneously and completely, a human being. Tying the previous chapters together, Chapter Eight paints Cyril's picture of the person of Christ, using his images as the means by which to do so. Through this study, the thesis demonstrates that Cyril's imagery is an important part of his Christology, and provides the diligent interpreter with much rich material. Its guidance into Cyril's Christological thinking is indeed helpful in understanding the Archbishop. When considered within their intended context, they reveal to the reader an orthodox and consistent picture of Jesus Christ.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Douglas Finn
Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444CE) is most famous for his contributions to Christology, and especially for his role in the Christological controversy that dominated the latter half of his episcopate. Despite a welcome expansion in Cyrilline studies, especially in the last few decades, anthropology remains an under-represented object of scholarly inquiry. Cyril wrote no single work focused on anthropology; nevertheless, the human story permeates his writings. The underlying assumption of the dissertation is that Christology necessarily incorporates anthropology, given the fundamental assertion that the Son of God became a human being. Through close reading of several of Cyril’s Christological works (Commentary on John, his twenty-nine extant Festal Letters, On the Unity of Christ, and Doctrinal Questions and Answers) several themes and patterns emerge, such that it is possible to connect the pieces and discover a coherent anthropology. I argue that Cyril’s anthropology offers a complete account of the human story, from God’s purpose for humanity in creation, through fall, redemption, and judgment, and finally in the attainment of humanity’s telos in the enjoyment of eternal, familial union with God in heaven. This account is best understood generally in terms of divine giving and human receiving, and specifically according to a paradigm of revelation and imitation. In short, the Incarnation is the divine gift that reveals human nature and purpose, while human reception of that gift lies in both active and passive imitation of Christ. What emerges, therefore, is a distinctly Christological anthropology. Cyril’s account possesses several key features that together represent a significant contribution to anthropology: the Imago Dei is a divine gift extrinsic to our nature, which accounts for how it can be lost in the Fall and regained in Christ; the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit in humanity and individual believers are marked by a pledge and fulfillment dynamic; human freedom is respected by God such that even participation in the divine life is never imposed upon humanity but depends upon positive consent; the differentiation between human nature as a general category and human beings as particular individuals allows for the work of Christ to be beneficial to all, yet imposed upon none; and finally, the ascension of Christ represents the definitive revelation of God’s purpose for humanity, even as it inaugurates the consummation of the human telos

Cerveira, Ana M. "Geographic variation in behaviour and dim light adaptation in Cyrba algerina (Araneae, Salticidae)." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Biological Sciences, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1489.

Full text
Abstract:
Cyrba algerina is a salticid (Salticidae) spider that lives on the undersides of stones. Two populations were studied, Sintra and Algarve (Portugal), and shown to have similar phenology but different dominant prey. Life cycle in the laboratory was similar for the two populations, but Sintra matured at larger size than Algarve individuals, with these differences potentially having a genetic basis. Sintra individuals used prey-specific prey-capture behaviour against allopatric (Oecobius amboseli) and sympatric (O. machadoi, Trachyzelotes bardiae) spider and insect (bristletails) species. In contrast, Algarve C. algerina only adopted specialised capture behaviour against bristletails. Sintra, but not Algarve, individuals responded to the odour of O. machadoi and T. bardiae, and showed preference for T. bardiae over O. machadoi. Interpopulation variation in the use of specific prey-capture behaviour and in sensitivity to odour cues from prey is directly related to the prey available to individuals from each population, suggesting local adaptation to local prey. Preference for oecobiids seems to be controlled by an experiencetriggered developmental switch. The optics and histology of C. algerina’s principal eye suggest that living in a microhabitat with dim ambient light has favoured sensitivity at the expense of spatial acuity. Short focal length, reduced power of the eye’s diverging lens, and wide, contiguous rhabdomeres, seem to minimise the visual constraints imposed by the low light levels in C. algerina’s microhabitat. While relying solely on vision, C. algerina can detect, identify and capture prey in dim-light conditions under which other salticids perform poorly. C. algerina’s behaviour suggest use of temporal summation to improve its visual performance in dim light.

Blackwell, Benjamin Carey. "Christosis : Pauline soteriology in light of deification in Irenaeus and Cyril of Alexandria." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/219/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore whether and to what extent theosis helpfully captures Paul's presentation of the anthropological dimension of soteriology. Drawing methodologically from Gadamer, Jauss, and Bakhtin, we attempt to hold a conversation between Paul and two of his later interpreters--Irenaeus and Cyril of Alexandria--in order to see what light the development of deification in these later writers shines on the Pauline texts themselves. In Part 1 of the thesis, we analyse how Irenaeus and Cyril develop their notions of deification and how they use Pauline texts in support of their conclusions. Drawing from Ps 82 both writers ascribe to believers the appellation of 'gods', and they associate this primarily with Pauline texts that speak of the experience of immortality, sanctification, and being sons of God. As believers experience this deifying move the image and likeness of God is restored through a participatory relationship with God mediated by Christ and the Spirit. In Part 2 we then analyse the anthropological dimension of Paul's soteriology in Rom 8 and 2 Cor 3-5, with excursus on Gal 3-4, 1 Cor 15, and Phil 2-3. In the context of believers' restored divine-human relationship through Christ and the Spirit, Paul speaks of believers being conformed to the narrative of Christ's death and life, which culminates in an experience of divine and heavenly glory and immortality. In Part 3 we offer a comparison of patristic views of deification and Paul's soteriology. While differences are clear, we conclude that Paul's soteriology overlaps significantly with that of these two later interpreters, such that deification is an apt description of the anthropological dimension of his soteriology. At the same time, christosis is probably a better term in today's context to capture his distinct emphasis on embodying Christ's death and life.

Meurie, Cyril. "Segmentation d'images couleur par classification pixellaire et hiérarchie de partitions/ par Cyril Meurie." Caen, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005CAEN2028.

Full text
Abstract:

Badin, Alessandro. "Ecritures du Sida, écritures de l'intime : Hervé Guibert, Cyril Collard, Jean-Luc Lagarce." Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSES004.

Abstract:
The thesis examines AIDS-related literature in France with a particular focus on the writing of the self'. The meeting between diary an autofictional writing generates hybrid forms, which are the expression of a micropower, essential to language, that is the only way for the writes to express their condition of dying young men. Our main corpus includes texts by Cyril Collard, Hervé Guibert and Jean-Luc Lagarce

Vincent, Matthew Brian. "The CYRAS-YRS: a validation study of a risk-assessment instrument for young offenders." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/5308.

Full text
Abstract:
A substantial proportion of criminal offending, particularly serious offending, is perpetrated by a small group of repeat, serious offenders who continue offending over a long period of time, often beginning in childhood. The Youth Risk Screen (YRS) is an instrument designed to measure risk of recidivism for young offenders. In this study, the YRS was adjusted slightly for adaptation to CYRAS, a computerised database at the Child, Youth and Family service (CYF). The new instrument thus derived, the CYRAS-YRS, was then used to score the data for 425 cases from the CYRAS database. There were 190 females and 235 males in this study. The data were analysed in order to examine the psychometric properties of the CYRAS-YRS: first its reliability or internal consistency, and then its validity in predicting risk of reoffending. The CYRAS-YRS was found to have suitable reliability, and was found to successfully predict offending, with a correlation of 0.311 (p < 0.001) with a general reoffending measure, and a correlation of 0.370 (p < 0.001) with a serious reoffending measure. Both primary school age risk factors and other risk factors were found to predict reoffending. However, it was also found that the relationship between primary school age risk factors and reoffending seemed to be mediated completely by the presence or absence of risk factors that can apply at any age and that most typically appear later during adolescence. All of these findings were true for both male and female young offenders, thus demonstrating that these findings were robust and consistent across different subgroups of the sample. Sex differences were minimal, and the CYRAS-YRS was successfully validated as a promising instrument for predicting risk of reoffending in young offenders of either sex.
