Abstract:
Progressive failure process of adhesive joint under cyclic loading is of particular interest in this study. Such fatigue failure is described using damage mechanics with the assumed cohesive behaviour of the adhesive joint. Available cohesive zone model for monotonic loading is re-examined for extension to capture cyclic damage process of adhesive joints. Damage evolution in the adhesive joint is expressed in terms of cyclic degradation of interface strength and stiffness. Mixed-mode fatigue fracture of the joint is formulated based on relative displacements and strain energy release rate of the interface. A power-law type variation for each of these cohesive zone model parameters with accumulated load cycles is assumed in the presence of limited experimental data on cyclic interface fracture process. The cyclic cohesive zone model (CCZM) is implemented in commercial finite element analysis code and the model is validated using adhesively bonded 2024-T3 aluminium substrates with epoxy-based adhesive film (FM73M OST). The CCZM model is then examined for cyclic damage evolution characteristics of the adhesive lap joint subjected to cyclic displacement of Δδ = 0.1 mm, R=0 so as to induce shear-dominant fatigue failure. Results show that the cyclic interface damage started to initiate and propagate symmetrically from the both overlap edges and degradation of interface strength and stiffness started to accumulate after 0.5 cycles of displacement elapsed. The predicted results are consistent with the mechanics of relatively brittle interface failure process.

Abstract:
Abstract The subject of the paper comprises a cohesive soil response to a cyclic loading applied in the range of small strains (10-5 ÷ 10-3). To this end tests of undrained cyclic shear in a triaxial compression apparatus were carried out on homogeneous material - kaoline from Tułowice. The tests were carried out on a modernised test bed, enabling full saturation of samples using the back pressure method, as well as a precise, intra-chamber measurement of small strains. Maintaining a constant deviatoric stress amplitude for NC and OC soils, the effect of its size (A = 0.75 Δq or A = 0.375 Δq) as well as the influence of strain rate on material characteristics “deviatoric stress (excess pore water pressure) - axial strain” and effective stress paths were tested. While analysing the results obtained, a phenomenon of closing and stabilising initially open and moving loops were found, in contrast to proposal by Jardine [8]. The observed increments in the axial strain during cyclic loading operation, at the same levels of lateral effective stress, were greater for normally consolidated than for overconsolidated soils. At the same time, at each next cycle, these increments were smaller and smaller, assuming even the value equal to zero for the tenth cycle. Similar relationships occurred during the increase in the pore water pressure during the cyclic load action. For the set number of cycles n = 10 they were that small - max. 46% (and decreasing with each consecutive cycle) that they did not result in weakening of the material. Taking the trend of decreasing Δu increments into account it was possible to accept that the conclusion considered was right irrespective of the cycles’ number.

Abstract:
The reservoir landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) often suffers from local cyclic loading scenarios produced by surge waves, groundwater level fluctuation, traffic loading, and seismic activity. However, the effects of local cyclic loading on the shear resistance of the shear-zone of the reservoir landslide are poorly understood. This study experimentally investigates the effects of local cyclic loading on the shear strength and the deformation of shear-zone material using cyclic direct shear tests. A series of cyclic direct shear tests are performed with different normal stresses, cyclic periods, and numbers of cycles. The experimental results indicate that: (1) Compared with monotonic loading, local cyclic loading can significantly decrease the shear stress of shear-zone soil. (2) Shear-zone soil exhibits greater volumetric contraction under local cyclic loading conditions than that under monotonic loading. (3) Under different vertical stresses, the differentiation of shear deformation after 40 cycles of loading was slight and virtually insignificant. The research results reveal the weakening law of the mechanical strength of shear-zone soil under local cyclic loading, which provides a foundation for investigating the mechanism of the reservoir landslide under the fluctuation of water levels.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, the cyclic responses of an offshore wind turbine with a tripod foundation installed on an actual site were evaluated in a centrifuge. To understand the behavior of the turbine at the site, the site soil conditions, environmental loads, and real offshore wind turbine structure installed at the actual site were modeled by considering the centrifuge scaling law. From a series of cyclic loading tests, the cyclic responses of the tripod foundation were evaluated in terms of temporary/permanent displacements and cyclic stiffness. Moreover, the long-term behavior of the tripod foundation was predicted from the experimental results. The test results showed that the initial stiffness of the soil–foundation system decreased as the loading amplitude increased and that the stiffness increased with the number of cycles due to soil densification. The findings revealed that the cyclic behaviors of the tripod were more affected by the load amplitude than the number of cycles. In addition, the permanent rotation increased logarithmically with the number of cycles. A simple method to predict the displacement and change in the foundation stiffness of the actual wind turbine is proposed based on the results of the model tests. The results of this study also provide key insights into the long-term cyclic behavior of tripod foundations for offshore wind turbines.

"Resensitization of hepatocyte glucagon-stimulated adenylate cyclase can be inhibited when cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase inhibitors are used to elevate intracellular cyclic AMP concentrations to supraphysiological values." Biochemical Journal 249, no. 2 (January 15, 1988): 543–47. http://dx.doi.org/10.1042/bj2490543.

Full text
Abstract:
Treatment of intact hepatocytes with glucagon led to the rapid desensitization of adenylate cyclase, which reached a maximum around 5 min after application of glucagon, after which resensitization ensued. Complete resensitization occurred some 20 min after the addition of glucagon. In hepatocytes which had been preincubated with the cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), glucagon elicited a stable desensitized state where resensitization failed to occur even 20 min after exposure of hepatocytes to glucagon. Treatment with IBMX alone did not elicit desensitization. The action of IBMX in stabilizing the glucagon-mediated desensitized state was mimicked by the non-methylxanthine cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor Ro-20-1724 [4-(3-butoxy-4-methoxylbenzyl)-2-imidazolidinone]. IBMX inhibited the resensitization process in a dose-dependent fashion with an EC50 (concn. giving 50% of maximal effect) of 26 +/- 5 microM, which was similar to the EC50 value of 22 +/- 6 microM observed for the ability of IBMX to augment the glucagon-stimulated rise in intracellular cyclic AMP concentrations. Pre-treatment of hepatocytes with IBMX did not alter the ability of either angiotensin or the glucagon analogue TH-glucagon, ligands which did not increase intracellular cyclic AMP concentrations, to cause the rapid desensitization and subsequent resensitization of adenylate cyclase. It is suggested that, although desensitization of glucagon-stimulated adenylate cyclase is elicited by a cyclic AMP-independent process, the resensitization of adenylate cyclase can be inhibited by a process which is dependent on elevated cyclic AMP concentrations. This action can be detected by attenuating the degradation of cyclic AMP by using inhibitors of cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase.

Abstract:
The strain-controlled fatigue tests on extruded AZ31B magnesium alloy were conducted under the uniaxial loading with strain ratio Rε=-∞, frequency of 0.1 Hz and strain amplitude of 2% at room temperature. The cyclic hardening behavior was investigated. It was found that, during the low cycle fatigue (LCF) process, as the number of cycles increases, the stress amplitude increases corresponding to the decrease of the plastic strain amplitude. The development of dislocation density can be described as the function of the number of fatigue cycles, and the behavior can be explained well based on the dislocation density development model.

Abstract:
The TASEP (totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) studied here is a Markov chain on cyclic words over the alphabet{1,2,...,n} given by at each time step sorting an adjacent pair of letters chosen uniformly at random. For example, from the word 3124 one may go to 1324, 3124, 3124, 4123 by sorting the pair 31, 12, 24, or 43. Two words have the sametype if they are permutations of each other. If we restrict TASEP to words of some particular type m we get an ergodic Markov chain whose stationary distribution we denote by ζm. Soζm (u) is the asymptotic proportion of time spent in the state u if the chain started in some word of type m. The distribution ζ is the main object of study in this thesis. This distribution turns out to have several remarkable properties, and alternative characterizations. It has previously been studied both from physical, combinatorial, and probabilitistic viewpoints. In the first chapter we give an extended summary of known results and results in this thesis concerning ζ. The new results are described (and proved) in detail in Papers I - IV. The new results in Papers I and II include an explicit formula for the value ofζat sorted words and a product formula for decomposable words. We also compute some correlation functions for ζ. In Paper III we study of a generalization of TASEP to Weyl groups. In Paper IV we study a certain scaling limit of ζ, finding several interesting patterns of which we prove some. We also study an inhomogenous version of TASEP, in which different particles get sorted at different rates, which generalizes the homogenous version in several aspects. In the first chapter we compute some correlation functions for ζ

Cycle-to-Cycle (CtC) feedback control has been studied extensively with increasing demands on the precision and quality of manufactured parts. Single input-Single output has been studied as the basis of CtC feedback control. In the manufacturing sector, processes consist of many input parameters and critical outputs. Multivariate CtC seeks to extend the findings of SISO CtC to more accurately reflect real world processes. Multiple input-Multiple output CtC feedback control is applied to an injection molding process to verify the effects on quality of the parts produced. A design of experiment is used to determine the gains of the process, regression models are developed and integral feedback control is applied. The process is actively driven to meet specific target outputs. Minimal mean errors and variance ratios ranging from 0.14 to 0.57 are observed indicating an improvement in quality.

Abstract:
The development of a new angioplasty balloon from a new material can be a long and arduous process that may take months. These balloons must meet some very stringent requirements such as high rated burst pressure with minimal wall thickness. The purpose of this thesis is to help reduce the amount of time invested in the experimental development stages of these medical balloons. This can be achieved with the aid of a cycle-to-cycle controller. The controller presented here may be simplistic, but it has shown that with further testing and modeling, it has the potential to completely replace the trial-and-error method of balloon development in use today.

Business process management (BPM) has obtained significant importance for both academics and practitioners. However, the academic literature needs additional empirical researches to fulfill research-practice gaps, especially on how organizations are developing BPM tasks, identifying the barriers faced and main enablers adopted. Within this context, this paper presents the empirical findings and lessons learnt from an action research on the evolution of the logistics processes management for a multinational entertainment company. Different critical factors are analyzed and discussed within the Master Thesis regarding the entire BPM development from a life cycle approach, focusing in the organizational, people and IT dimensions, resulting in contributions for both academics and practitioners.

Abstract:
This thesis is an initial attempt at analyzing the "product-process matrix," a framework suggesting the interaction of product and process life cycles. The objectives of this thesis were to test the theory surrounding the "product-process matrix" and also test theories concerning the transition of strategic objectives between "product-process matrix" regions. The methodology included conducting a survey of Virginia manufacturing firms on strategic concerns, constructing a database into which survey responses were loaded, and analyzing survey responses.

Results of this survey suggested that the theory surrounding the "product-process matrix" may be inappropriate. Results also indicated the possibility that row and column descriptions of the current "product-process matrix" may need alterations in order to be more applicable to manufacturing firms. Further research is necessary to examine possible biases associated with the survey instrument and survey sample. After such research has been undertaken, it is recommended that continued work in this area may help to improve understanding the interaction between markets and manufacturing processes.

Abstract:
The presence of arsenic in drinking water has been a major concern for years, due to its concentration being above the maximum allowable limit of 10 μg/l. Ingestion of arsenic-contaminated water causes different types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, skin lesion and more. Many techniques have been developed and used to reduce arsenic levels to the maximum allowable limit. The conventional methods to do so are adsorption, membrane filtration, coagulation-flocculation, oxidation, and ion exchange. The most common adsorption material is activated carbon produced from hard coal, but there is a shift towards using agro-waste materials in order to produce a more environmentally-friendly adsorbent with high rejection levels. Such materials include cocoa pod husk, ice cream beans, and red mombin seeds, where cocoa pod husk AC was able to remove 80% of arsenate, and red mombin seeds AC removed arsenate almost completely. Nanofiltration membranes were reportedly effective for arsenic removal, reaching a removal percentage of 90%. In this work, a life cycle assessment analysis using SimaPro was conducted for arsenic removal using red mombin seeds activated carbon and spiral wound nanofiltration membranes, as they are able to reach high removal efficiencies. The methods were then compared based on their impacts on the different environmental and damage categories to determine which is the better option. The results showed that nanofiltration had the lowest environmental impacts over the different impact categories by a huge difference

Abstract:
The development of a new angioplasty balloon is a time consuming process. This thesis aims at reducing the amount of time and materials spent on the experimental stage of the development of new angioplasty balloons. This can be achieved by building a nonlinear neural network model of the balloon forming process and implementing an off-line cycle-to-cycle controller. The controller can learn from the previous experiments and provide better input parameters for improving the quality of the next balloons formed in the process. It is shown in the experimental test results that the neural network model can provide accurate estimates of the process outputs. The neural network model combined with a cycle-to-cycle control strategy has the potential to replace the trial-and-error approach to balloon development that is commonly applied today.

Abstract:
Abstract Cyclic Solvent Process (CSP) is a non-thermal solvent-based heavy oil recovery technology that was invented and developed by Imperial Oil Resources Limited through a multi-year integrated research program. The commercial viability of potential development concepts and their associated uncertainties are also an active area of investigation. A key input to an economic model is the global (or development level) flow stream. The conventional approach of developing the global flow stream involves the determination of well schedule through a well prioritization algorithm that adheres to a set of flow stream capacity constraints. The resulting flow streams can then be passed to an economic tool to evaluate a set of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) in an uncoupled manner. One of the main challenges encountered in this approach is that it is difficult to optimize the overall economic performance due to (1) the absence of well-defined objective function, (2) the decoupling of the flow stream generation and the economic calculations, (3) the pre-defined characteristics of the well prioritization algorithm. The main objective of this study is to develop a mathematical optimization model for CSP commercial projects. A two-stage optimization framework, which integrates Genetic Algorithm (GA) as master optimizer and Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) as sub-optimizer, is described. A conceptual commercial scenario is simulated as a case study and economic uplift is demonstrated.

Abstract:
The paper analyzes the influence of working fluids on the efficiency of the combined system integrated with solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), gas turbine (GT), organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and steam turbine. Based on the mathematical model under the same heat source conditions and defined limit conditions, the analysis and comparison of the obtained values of efficiency and losses of individual cycles and the complete combined system for ORC working fluids m-xylene, toluene and MDM (OMTS) was performed. Pre-selected working fluids for the use of heat generated in SOFC and GT after the work is performed must meet environmental, safety and thermodynamic criteria. A comparative analysis of the obtained results of losses and efficiency will show which of the pre - selected working fluids under the same operating conditions has the greatest impact on the efficiency of the ORC and the combined system SOFC - GT - ORC - PT. The obtained results of individual efficiencies of SOFC, GT, ORC and PT will be the basis for determining the percentage increase in efficiency of quadruple combined system compared to stand-alone SOFC, hybrid SOFC-GT and triple combined system SOFC-GT-PT, for ORC with all three working fluid.

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years the interest for new advanced thermodynamical gas turbine cycles has increased. One of the new designs is the evaporative gas turbine cycle. A lot of effort worldwide has been put into predicting the possible efficiency, pollutants, and dynamic behaviour of the evaporative gas turbine cycle, but all results so far have been affected by uncertain assumptions. Until now this cycle has not been demonstrated in a pilot plant. The purpose of this work has been to identify the potential of this cycle, by erecting a pilot plant at the Lund Institute of Technology. The project was financed on a 50/50 basis from the Swedish National Energy Administration and the industrial partners. Three different thermodynamical cycles have been tested in the pilot plant: the simple, the recuperative, and the evaporative cycles. The final pilot plant roughly consists of a 600 kW gas turbine, a hydraulic brake, a recuperator, a humidification tower, an economiser, and a flue gas condenser. All layout and functional analysis were made within the project. The pilot plant is, however, optimized neither for best efficiency nor for best emissions. It has only been built for demonstration purpose. It has been shown from the performance tests that the efficiency for the simple, recuperative, and evaporative cycles are 22, 27, and 35%, respectively, at rated power output. The NOx emissions were reduced by 90% to under 10 ppm, and the UHC and CO were not measurable when running the evaporative cycle at rated power output. The performance of the humidification tower was better than expected. The humidified air out from the humidification tower is always saturated. The pinch point, i.e. the temperature difference between the outcoming water from the humidification tower and the saturation temperature of the incoming air, is around 3°C. The water circuit was closed, i.e. there was no need for additional water, when the flue gases after the flue gas condenser reached a temperature of 35° C. The inhouse heat balance program, used for both cycle optimization and evaluation, has been verified. The evaporative gas turbine cycle has, when optimized, at least the same efficiency as the best combined cycle today, based on the same gas turbine. The evaporative cycle will also show very good performance when used in small scale power plants.

Grafi, Gideon, and Brian Larkins. Endoreduplication in Maize Endosperm: An Approach for Increasing Crop Productivity. United States Department of Agriculture, September 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7575285.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this research project is to investigate the role of endoreduplication in maize endosperm development and the extent to which this process contributes to high levels of starch and storage protein synthesis. Although endoreduplication has been widely observed in many cells and tissues, especially those with high levels of metabolic activity, the molecular mechanisms through which the cell cycle is altered to produce consecutive cycles of S-phase without an intervening M-phase are unknown. Our previous research has shown that changes in the expression of several cell cycle regulatory genes coincide with the onset of endoreduplication. During this process, there is a sharp reduction in the activity of the mitotic cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) and activation of the S-phase CDK. It appears the M-phase CDK is stable, but its activity is blocked by a proteinaceous inhibitor. Coincidentally, the S-phase checkpoint protein, retinoblastoma (ZmRb), becomes phosphorylated, presumably releasing an E2F-type transcriptional regulator which promotes the expression of genes responsible for DNA synthesis. To investigate the role of these cell cycle proteins in endoreduplication, we have created transgenic maize plants that express various genes in an endosperm-specific manner using a storage protein (g-zein) promoter. During the first year of the grant, we constructed point mutations of the maize M-phase kinase, p34cdc2. One alteration replaced aspartic acid at position 146 with asparagine (p3630-CdcD146N), while another changed threonine 161 to alanine (p3630-CdcT161A). These mutations abolish the activity of the CDK. We hypothesized that expression of the mutant forms of p34cdc2 in endoreduplicating endosperm, compared to a control p34cdc2, would lead to extra cycles of DNA synthesis. We also fused the gene encoding the regulatory subunit of the M- phase kinase, cyclin B, under the g-zein promoter. Normally, cyclin B is expected to be destroyed prior to the onset of endoreduplication. By producing high levels of this protein in developing endosperm, we hypothesized that the M-phase would be extended, potentially reducing the number of cycles of endoreduplication. Finally, we genetically engineered the wheat dwarf virus RepA protein for endosperm-specific expression. RepA binds to the maize retinoblastoma protein and presumably releases E2F-like transcription factors that activate DNA synthesis. We anticipated that inactivation of ZmRb by RepA would lead to additional cycles of DNA synthesis.

Abstract:
The article discusses the physical model of the implicative form of Consciousness in the form of a holographic wave matrix, for which the material basis is directly the phase environment that fills the entire Space. It is shown that a similar form of Consciousness that exists outside the human brain can be represented as a kind of software shell that controls all forms of matter by implementing a fractal cyclic iterative algorithm. The condition for the completion of each iterative cycle at each scale level is the observance of the laws of symmetry that ensure the survival of the object in the process of copying-incarnation.
