Full text
Abstract:
Sister Style: The Politics of Appearance for Black Women Political Elites centers Black women’s bodies, specifically their hair texture and skin tone, to argue that phenotypic differences among Black women politicians directly impact how they experience political office and how Black voters evaluate them. The book brings together an interdisciplinary, multi-method, and blended epistemological approach of positivism and interpretivism to ask whether African American women’s appearances provide a more nuanced lens through which to study how their raced-gendered identities impact their candidacies and shape their political behavior. The authors take a deep dive into intersectional theory-building, through which they examine the intra-categorical differences among Black women. They find that Black women vary in their political experiences because of their appearances, and that dominant, Eurocentric beauty standards influence the electoral chances of Black women. They observe that skin tone and hair texture, along with the historical legacies that have shaped the current cultural and political contexts, dictate Black women elites’ political experiences and voter evaluations of them. The book asks the following questions: What do the politics of appearance for Black women mean for Black women politicians and for Black voters who evaluate them? What are the origins of the contemporary focus on Black women’s bodies in public life? How do Black women politicians themselves make sense of the politics of appearance? Is there a phenotypic profile into which most Black women politicians fit? What is the effect of variation in Black women’s phenotypes for candidate evaluations? And how do voters process the appearances of Black women candidates?

Ball, Derek. Semantics as Measurement. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198739548.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter defends a view of semantics on which developing a semantic theory closely resembles developing a scale of measurement. The view helps explain how semantics has made so much progress despite deep disagreements about the target of semantic theorizing (e.g., between those who maintain that semantics is characterizing something psychological, and those who maintain that it is characterizing something social), how appeals to set-theoretic abstracta make sense despite Benacerraf-style worries and despite the fact that set-theoretic entities fit badly with standard (e.g., causal) metasemantic views, and why the threat of radical context sensitivity does not undermine the semantic project.

Frazier, Adrian. Irish Acting in the Early Twentieth Century. Edited by Nicholas Grene and Chris Morash. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198706137.013.16.

Full text
Abstract:
Frank Fay, with his brother William Fay, were primarily responsible for the development of what became known as the Abbey style of acting, Frank drawing upon his study of the French actor Coquelin and the director André Antoine, William with his experience of acting in fit-up touring companies. This style, conditioned by the limited playing resources available to them, centred on fine speech, teamwork, and restraint. In a later period, after the Fays had left in 1908, the tradition of ensemble playing in a permanent company allowed for the development of fine individual character acting represented by Sara Allgood, F. J. McCormick, and Barry Fitzgerald. The actor-manager Anew McMaster, with his large romantic style, helped to shape the tradition of the otherwise modernist Gate Theatre. Irish acting in the first half of the twentieth century was thus a hybrid compound of many different elements.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of scholarship regarding humanism and scholastic method in the early-modern period, then focuses on developments in scholastic method in the Swiss cantons, particularly between c. 1530 and c. 1590. The place of Aristotle’s works and the role of disputations receive detailed treatment. From the classical period onward, writers had several ways of distinguishing the expansive and persuasive rhetorical style from the tightly argued method of the schools and academies. Chandieu promoted this distinction, with his own approach being but one example of many in which the humanist concern for the original sources fit seamlessly within the scholastic method in use in the academies and universities.

Abstract:
This chapter is an introduction to the oft-misunderstood opera of Robert Ashley. Ashley's works do not fit the profile of what people generally think of as opera. In his pieces, people sing in a style that resembles speech, and plots are rarely evident in his works. The chapter argues that his works are far more stylistically complex than they initially appear, and that furthermore his oeuvre not only fits the very definition of opera, but even updates it in certain cases. It highlights the unconventionality of his opera and yet situates them squarely among the classical greats. In doing so, the chapter also delves into Ashley's own merits as a composer.

Abstract:
The topical label ofSturm und Drang, which draws on parallels between certain movements of Haydn’s middle-period symphonies and the trend in German Romantic literature (Wyzewa 1909) was deemed misguided and no longer fit for purpose in the discipline of topic theory. In this chapter it is replaced bytempesta. This termacknowledges the origins of the topic not in Haydn’s symphonies, but in early opera, since the musical language clearly derives from depictions of storms and other devastations in the theater.Tempestais to be regarded as the counterpart ofombra, the menacing style of music associated with the supernatural. Both styles are often juxtaposed in infernal scenes, where the creeping terror ofombrais contrasted with the fast frenzy oftempesta. The aesthetic framework for these topics is Burke’s “sublime of terror” (1758) rather than the German literarySturm und Drang.

Lau, Beth. Intertextual Dialogue. Edited by David Duff. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199660896.013.26.

Full text
Abstract:
Intertextual dialogue in the Romantic period is shaped by conflicting imperatives. Romantic writers lived in an age when the pressure to be original and natural coincided for the first time to a significant degree with the worship and canonization of previous British authors, especially such ‘geniuses’ as Shakespeare and Milton. Major figures from every genre of the period can be seen to negotiate the competing demands to acquire legitimacy by invoking other, recognized writers, and to express their own unique vision and style—both to fit into existing literary tradition and to stand out as unique. This chapter explores the complications of intertextual dialogue in five representative authors across a variety of genres: the essayist and critic William Hazlitt, the poet and writer of marginalia Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the novelist Jane Austen, and poets John Clare and John Keats.
