[ES] En la actualidad, una gran cantidad de infraestructuras están compuestas de forma parcial o total de materiales cementicios, siendo el hormigón uno de los materiales cementicios más antiguos y utilizados en la construcción debido a su bajo coste, durabilidad y características mecánicas y estructurales. Pese a sus características, estos materiales están expuestos a diversas condiciones adversas del entorno y sufren procesos de deterioro que afectan a su integridad y seguridad. El reconocimiento de la integridad y seguridad en las estructuras cementicias ha implicado una extensa investigación y el desarrollo de diversas pruebas para verificar su calidad y estado. Mediante la destrucción de una muestra extraída de la estructura, en el caso de los ensayos destructivos (ED), o mediante la inspección de la estructura sin necesidad de dañarla o alterar sus propiedades, en el caso de los ensayos no destructivos (END). Existen multitud de técnicas END que tratan de caracterizar estas estructuras sin dañarlas, siendo la inspección mediante ultrasonidos una de las más utilizadas en materiales cementicios. Tradicionalmente estas técnicas ultrasónicas se basan en el estudio de las ondas longitudinales (P) y transversales (S), que permiten caracterizar una estructura mediante la realización de múltiples medidas. Sin embargo, existe otro tipo de ondas, formadas por la superposición de los desplazamientos de las partículas de las ondas P y S denominadas ondas guiadas, las cuales permiten inspeccionar una estructura de forma global a partir de una única medida, además de ser capaces de propagarse a grandes distancias manteniendo una buena relación señal-a-ruido en comparación a las ondas P y S. Dentro de las ondas guiadas más utilizadas para inspeccionar materiales cementicios, se encuentran las ondas de Rayleigh y las ondas de Lamb. Las ondas de Rayleigh se propagan en estructuras de gran espesor, mientras que las ondas de Lamb se propagan en placas. Las ondas de Lamb presentan una naturaleza dispersiva y multimodal. Su naturaleza dispersiva implica que las velocidades de fase y grupo de estas ondas depende de la frecuencia, mientras que la naturaleza multimodal implica que existen cada vez más modos de propagación conforme aumenta la frecuencia de excitación. Se pueden excitar y detectar selectivamente los distintos modos de Lamb mediante la incidencia oblicua, es decir, variando la inclinación del transmisor y el receptor. Para ello, existen distintas técnicas de acoplamiento que permiten la incidencia oblicua, como el acoplamiento por cuñas sólidas, el acoplamiento por agua y el acoplamiento por aire. La presente tesis se ha centrado en el estudio de nuevas técnicas de END basadas en ondas guiadas para caracterizar diferentes tipos de daño en los materiales cementicios. Para ello, se han llevado a cabo un número considerable de medidas experimentales basadas en distintas técnicas de acoplamiento para la generación y captación de ondas guiadas. Inicialmente se han analizado materiales homogéneos como los metales, para, posteriormente, utilizar el conocimiento adquirido en dichos materiales y estudiar materiales más heterogéneos como los cementicios. Se han evaluado diferentes tipos de técnicas de acoplamiento junto con diferentes tipos de transductores. Los materiales cementicios se han inspeccionado mediante ondas guiadas ultrasónicas con dos tipos de daño: la carbonatación, estudiando el efecto con probetas de dos capas de mortero, y el envejecimiento de fibras en placas de cemento reforzado con fibra de vidrio (GRC). Se ha demostrado que las ondas guiadas son sensibles a estos daños, obteniendo resultados esperanzadores. Concretamente, las ondas de Rayleigh se han utilizado en el daño por carbonatación debido a su sensibilidad a capas superficiales de degradación, mientras que en el envejecimiento de fibras se han utilizado las ondas de Lamb, por su sensibilidad a defectos a lo largo

Malgrat la seua durabilitat i característiques, aquests materials estan exposats a diverses condicions adverses de l'entorn i pateixen processos de deterioració que afecten la seua integritat i seguretat. El reconeixement de la integritat i seguretat en les estructures cementants ha implicat una extensa investigació i el desenvolupament de diverses proves per a verificar la seua qualitat i estat. La inspecció mitjançant ultrasons és un dels assajos no destructius més utilitzats en materials cementants. Tradicionalment, aquestes tècniques ultrasòniques estan basades en l'estudi de les ones longitudinals (P) i transversals (S), que permeten caracteritzar una estructura mitjançant la realització de múltiples mesures en l'estructura. No obstant, existeixen altres tipus d'ones, formades per la superposició dels desplaçaments de les partícules de les ones P i S, denominades ones guiades, les quals permeten inspeccionar una estructura de manera global a partir d'una única mesura, a més de poder propagar-se a grans distàncies mantenint una bona relació senyal-soroll en comparació a les ones P i S. Les ones de Rayleigh es propaguen en estructures de gran grossària, mentre que les ones de Lamb es propaguen en plaques. Les ones de Lamb presenten una naturalesa dispersiva i multimodal. [EN] Nowadays, a large number of infrastructures are partially or wholly built with cementitious materials. Concrete is one of the oldest and most popular cementitious materials due to its low cost, durability and remarkable mechanical and structural characteristics. However, if these materials are exposed to different environments and harsh conditions, they suffer damaging processes that affect their integrity and safety. To verify their state and quality, extensive research has been conducted and several tests have been developed, such as destructive testing and non-destructive testing. Destructive testing (DT) requires a sample of the inspected structure while non-destructive testing (NDT) allows the inspection of the structure without altering its properties and without damaging it. There are several NDT techniques that characterize cementitious structures without harming them, such as ultrasonic testing, which is one of the most widely used. This technique is based on the study of longitudinal (P) and shear (S) waves, which enable the characterization of a structure by a point-by-point scan. However, there are another kind of waves, called guided waves, which are composed of the superposition of the P and S wave particle displacements. Unlike P and S waves, guided waves allow a global inspection of a structure from a single transducer position and they are able to propagate over long distances with a good signal-to-noise ratio. Rayleigh and Lamb waves are the most frequently used guided waves in NDT of cementitious materials. Rayleigh waves propagate in thick structures while Lamb waves propagate in plate-like structures. Lamb waves are dispersive (their phase and group velocities depend on frequency) and multimodal (as frequency increases, many propagation modes with different velocities exist in the received signal). Lamb wave modes can be selectively excited and detected by means of oblique incidence, i.e., by varying the inclination of the transmitting and receiving transducers. Different coupling techniques can be used to change the inclination of the transducers, such as the contact technique with angle beam wedge transducers, water coupling and air coupling. This thesis has been focused in the study of new NDT techniques based on guided waves (Rayleigh and Lamb waves) to characterize different types of damage of cementitious materials. For this goal, a significant number of experimental arrangements based on different coupling techniques have been carried out. Firstly, homogeneous materials as metals have been analized, because they are a reference in guided wave testing. After performing different experiments in metals, the acquired knowledge has been used to inspect heterogeneous materials as cementitious ones. Different coupling techniques (variable angle wedges, immersion testing, fixed angle wedges, ...) with different types of transducers (contact transducers, immersion transducers and air-coupled transducers) have been employed. Cementitious materials with two damaging processes have been inspected by means of guided waves: two-layered mortar specimens to study carbonation and glass-fibre reinforced cement (GRC) plates to study fiber ageing. This thesis demonstrates that guided waves are sensitive to these damaging processes and the obtained results are encouraging. Specifically, Rayleigh waves have been used to detect carbonation due to its sensitivity to surface layers, while Lamb waves have been used to detect fiber ageing due to its sensitivity to defects along the thickness of the GRC plates.

Abstract:
The effect of stress on Lamb wave propagation is relevant to both nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring because of changes in received signals due to both the associated strain and the acoustoelastic effect. A homogeneous plate that is initially isotropic becomes anisotropic under biaxial stress, and dispersion of propagating waves becomes directionally dependent. The problem is similar to Lamb wave propagation in an anisotropic plate, except the fourth order tensor in the resulting wave equation does not have the same symmetry as that for the unstressed anisotropic plate, and the constitutive equation relating incremental stress to incremental strain is more complicated. Here we review the theory of acoustoelastic and develop theory for acoustoelastic Lamb wave propagation and show how dispersion curves shift anisotropically for an aluminum plate under biaxial tension. We also develop an approximate method using the effective elastic constants (EECs) and show that existing commercial tools to generate dispersion curves can be used under restricted conditions to describe wave propagation in biaxially stressed plates. Predictions of changes in phase velocity as a function of propagation direction using theory and the EEC method are compared to experimental results for a single wave mode.

Abstract:
A destruição causada por um terremoto depende de muitos fatores, como características e profundidade da fonte, magnitude, distância epicentral e da configuração geológica da área. A destruição causada devido à configuração geológica da área é denominada como efeito local. A modelagem do efeito local implica na determinação do tempo e nível de vibração e do efeito de amplificação do deslocamento. As propriedades elásticas dos materiais geológicos (velocidade das ondas de compressão e de cisalhamento, densidade, espessura da camada de solo, etc.) podem ser obtidas por diversos métodos geofísicos. O conhecimento dessas propriedades elásticas ajuda a melhor projetar as infraestruturas e reduzir as chances de danos. Este procedimento é denominado de microzoneamento. Os parâmetros mais importantes para realizar o microzoneamento são as espessuras dos sedimentos que recobrem o embasamento e o perfil das velocidades das ondas S (cisalhamento). Esses dois parâmetros são adequadamente caracterizados pelo uso de várias técnicas geofísicas como perfilagens em furos de sondagem, reflexão e refração sísmica. Esses métodos geofísicos trazem algumas restrições como a necessidade da execução de um furo, emprego de fontes sísmicas artificiais que muitas vezes são dispendiosas e por vezes de uso restrito em áreas urbanas, além de muitas vezes estarem limitadas a investigações de apenas algumas dezenas de metros. Os métodos que substituíram esses métodos geofísicos convencionais nas últimas décadas são a análise do ruído sísmico produzido por fontes naturais e culturais. Este ruído sísmico ambiental pode ser registrado com menor custo e esforço e com boa cobertura lateral. Várias técnicas que se utilizam do ruído sísmico podem ser empregadas, no entanto, aquela que obteve maior atenção nos últimos anos é a técnica da razão do espectro horizontal sobre o espectro vertical da onda de superfície (H/V). A curva da razão espectral H/V é uma ferramenta rápida, fácil e de baixo custo para a caracterização da subsuperfície rasa. Existem vários estudos realizados sobre o tema que tentaram cobrir todos os aspectos e problemas associados ao método. Aqui neste estudo são aprofundados alguns aspectos ainda não avaliados em detalhe. Diferentes procedimentos para a modelagem e as associações entre os fenômenos físicos envolvidos e as características da curva H/V são discutidos e os resultados numéricos desses estudos são comparados com informações extraídas de perfis de sondagens de um dos locais estudados. O pico e a forma da curva H / V são modelados para encontrar o desvio na frequência de pico a partir da frequência de ressonância da onda de cisalhamento considerando diferentes campos de onda em torno do pico, assim como sua relação com a forma dominante da curva. A frequência de pico das curvas H/V é utilizada para estimar a relação entre a frequência a espessura através de análise de regressão. O estudo mostra que a curva de dispersão obtida a partir de um ensaio MASW pode ser usada para estimar a velocidade da onda S a um metro de profundidade e sua tendência de aumento com a profundidade. Esses valores podem ser usados para estimar a relação frequência-espessura para uma área. Esses resultados são comparados com a relação frequência-espessura derivada experimentalmente para a mesma área. A sensibilidade da forma da curva H/V à estrutura de velocidade do meio é analisada através de duas técnicas de modelagem (elipticidade da onda Rayleigh e campo difuso baseado na curva H/V). Diferentes partes da curva H/V são invertidas visando avaliar qual a parte da curva H/V contém as informações mais importantes sobre a estrutura subterrânea. As lições aprendidas dessas análises são aplicadas a três dados experimentais de locais distintos. As ondas Love podem contaminar o resultado da curva H/V. Duas técnicas diferentes para remover o efeito das ondas amorosas são discutidas. Em seguida, são discutidos os resultados da inversão conjunta das curvas de dispersão e da curva H/V após remoção do efeito da onda Love, ou seja, a curva de elipticidade. Alguns aspectos novos da técnica H/V são discutidos no final.
The destruction caused by an earthquake at a site depends on many factors like source characteristics such as magnitude, epicentral distance from the site, depth of the source, and on the geological setting of the area. The destruction caused due to the geological setting of an area is termed as site effect. To model the site effect of an area is to determine the shaking level longevity and its displacement amplification. The elastic properties (shear and compressional wave velocities, density, thickness of soil layer, etc.) of the site are required to find out by employing various geophysical procedures. The knowledge of these elastic properties help in better designing the infrastructure, which reduces the chances of destruction caused by a local geological setting due to an earthquake occurrence. This procedure is widely termed as microzonation. The most important parameters for the microzonation are the thickness of soft sediments over the seismic bedrock and its shear wave velocity profile. These two parameters are properly characterized by employing various geophysical techniques like borehole measurement, seismic reflection and seismic refraction. The conventional geophysical methods bring some hindrance to the picture such as, the drilling of a borehole and artificial seismic sources deployment for the reflection and refraction survey, which are both expensive and time consuming, difficult or even in some case impossible to implement in urbanized environment, the investigation is depth limited to few tens of meter. The methods which replaced this conventional geophysical method from the last decades or so is the analysis of Earth vibration caused by the seismic noise which is produced by both natural and cultural sources. This ambient seismic noise can be recorded with less cost and effort with good lateral coverage. Various seismic noise techniques are employed for this job; however, the one which got the most attention in recent years is the horizontal over vertical spectral ratio (H/V) technique. The H/V spectral ratio curve is a fast easy and cheap tool for the near-subsurface characterization. There are various study performed on the topic which has tried to cover almost all the aspects and problems associated with the method. Here in this study, we try to detail the aspects of this technique, which are not been evaluated fully. The different modelling procedures presented to model and physically link the H/V curve with some physical phenomenon will be discussed and its numerical result with the experimental H/V curve will be compared for a borehole test site. The peak and the shape of the H/V curve will be modelled to find its peak frequency deviation from the shear wave resonance frequency by considering different wave-field around the peak. Similarly, the shape dominancy of the H/V curve linkage will be find out. The peak frequency of the H/V curve is used to estimate the thickness-frequency relation by regression analysis. Here we will show that the dispersion curve obtained from multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) can be used to estimate the velocity at one meter and the shear wave velocity increase trend with depth. These values can be used to estimate the thickness frequency relation for an area and its result will be compared with the experimentally derived thickness-frequency relationship for the same area. The sensitivity of the H/V curve shape to the subsurface velocity structure will find out for two main modelling techniques (Rayleigh wave ellipticity and diffused field based H/V curve). The different parts of the H/V curve are inverted (back modelled) to find out the part of H/V curve which is carrying the most important information about the subsurface structure. The lesson learned from all this analysis will be applied to experimental data of three different sites. The Love waves might contaminate the result of the H/V curve. Two different techniques to remove their effects will be discussed. Then, the joint inversion result of the dispersion and this Love effect removed H/V for more precisely ellipticity curve is discussed. Some new aspects of the H/V curve technique are also discussed at the end.

Abstract:
Over the previous summer I studied mixing of a passive tracer by flow in a straight cylindrical pipe, under the supervision of prof. Bernoff. The mixing process can be thought of as the successive action of advection by the fluid flow and diffusion modeled by random walks. With this method we were able to distinguish three different regimes. For short times, diffusion is more relevant than advection and we observed a Gaussian longitudinal distribution of the concentration. In an intermediate regime, advection by the shear is dominant over longitudinal diffusion and we observed a distinctively asymmetric distribution which spread much faster than would be expected by the action of diffusion alone. Finally when the tracer had completely mixed across the pipe’s cross- section, we recovered the classical Taylor regime with a longitudinal Gaussian distribution. In each regime we have analytical prediction of tracer distribution, confirmed by numerical calculation. The object of this thesis is to extend our results to curved pipes; we will start by considering curved planar pipes and helical pipes. We will try to determine if mixing in these geometries displays the same three distinctive regimes of mixing. The pipe’s curvature introduces a secondary flow in the form of a transverse recirculation with a dipolar form, discovered by Dean (1928). We believe this transverse flow should enhance mixing, which explains why curved pipes are used in cooling systems and other situations where heat exchange is relevant. Our object is to first understand existing analytical approximations to the flow in a curved pipe due to Dean and others and then to study analytically and numerically the spread of a passive scalar in these flows.

There is growing appreciation and research regarding geophysical methods to evaluate near surface soil properties in geotechnical engineering. Geophysical methods are generally non-destructive test (NDT) methods that do not necessitate traditional sampling of soils. Instead, they rely on application of input signals and deduction of soil properties from the measured response of the domain. Geophysical methods include various seismic, magnetic and nuclear techniques applied at the surface and/or subsurface within boreholes. Surface seismic methods, which include Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), are increasing in usage for geotechnical engineering purposes to evaluate stiffness properties of soils. MASW typically involves using a hammer to impact a base plate (also referred to as a striker plate) to transmit surface waves into the ground. These waves propagate through the underlying soils at a site and are received by an array of geophones placed on the ground surface. The manner in which the waves propagate is primarily influenced by soil stiffness, particularly against shear. Therefore, the signals recorded during an MASW survey can be analyzed to estimate the shear stiffness of the soils at a site, a parameter that is extremely important for seismic-related engineering purposes (e.g., site amplification, liquefaction, etc.). Aluminum plates are routinely used in a large number of MASW studies as a striker plate to couple the energy from a sledgehammer blow to the underlying soil layers. Various researchers have postulated that the material make-up of the striker plate has an effect on the frequency of the generated waves and, for that matter, the depth achieved with a typical MASW survey. For example, a less stiff material such as ultra-high-molecular-weight (UHMW) polyethylene is often recommended to increase low frequency energy of the input surface wave relative to aluminum. However, very limited research work has been performed in this area to systematically ascertain the effects of modifications to the striker plate material. Due to the limited direct research related to striker plates, MASW was utilized in this study to measure the dispersion curve resulting from MASW at various sites in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Different striker plate configurations were used during testing to systematically quantify their effects on typical MASW results. The proposed striker base plate configurations included a one (1.0) inch thick aluminum plate, a one (1.0) inch thick aluminum plate over additional rubber mats of varying thickness, and multiple ultra-high-molecular-weight (UHMW) polyethylene plates of various thicknesses. The purpose of this testing was to examine the performance of each configuration, particularly at the low frequency range of the dispersion results. Also efforts were made to qualitatively access the durability of the configurations with respect to long term exposure to impact load.

Abstract:
In this dissertation different structural materials (aluminum and steel) with different geometrical shapes (plates, pipes and bars) are studied for damage detection with guided waves. Specific guided wave modes (also known as Lamb wave modes for plate type structures) are generated in a laminated aluminum plate for damage detection and quantification using a broad band piezoelectric transducer structured with a rigid electrode. Appropriate excitation frequencies and modes for inspection are selected from theoretical and experimental dispersion curves. Sensitivity of anti-symmetric and symmetric modes for delamination detection and quantification is investigated. Longitudinal guided waves are excited and recorded after transmission through reinforcing steel bars for monitoring its corrosion level. Instead of investigating the amplitude of the transmitted guided waves, or in other words, monitoring its attenuation, the differential time-of-flight (TOF) is recorded. A reliable guided wave mode is identified for the detection and quantification of corrosion in reinforcing steel bars. Hole type damage, and bonding/de-bonding or lamination/delamination in pipes are studied with Noncontact Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducers and PZT transducers. An adaptive method using phase of the recorded signals for detection and quantification of damages in pipes is established using multiple feature extraction techniques (Time-Frequency representations) and differential time-of-flight cross-correlation technique.

A fotônica em silício é um campo de pesquisas emergente com grande potencial para contribuir com a resolução de alguns dos problemas tecnológicos da atualidade. O gargalo imposto por interconexões metálicas na expansão da taxa de transmissão de dados em sistemas de comunicação como os de computadores de alto desempenho talvez seja um dos maiores desafios a serem superados. A propagação de luz em baixas velocidades de grupo e com controle de dispersão é uma das linhas de pesquisa atuais nas quais se busca explorar de forma mais eficiente as propriedades ópticas do silício, e assim, aumentar a compatibilidade entre componentes fotônicos e a tecnologia CMOS (Complementary Metal- Oxide-Semiconductor) por meio da diminuição das dimensões e do consumo de energia de componentes ópticos ativos. Dessa forma, espera-se diminuir os custos de fabricação e viabilizar a produção em larga escala de dispositivos integrados optoeletrônicos, que poderiam ser utilizados em sistemas de comunicação de curtas distâncias e assim ampliar a largura de banda disponível. Investigações recentes têm demonstrado que a fabricação de dispositivos baseados em cristais fotônicos planares possui grande potencial para controlar simultaneamente a velocidade de grupo e a dispersão, além de permitir a redução do tamanho de elementos como curvas, divisores de potência e cavidades ressonantes devido ao efeito do confinamento dos campos através do bandgap fotônico. Dessa forma, esse trabalho aborda um estudo sobre a integração monolítica entre guias de onda, curvas de 60º e junções em Y que operam em baixas velocidades de grupo e com reduzida dispersão, construídos em cristais fotônicos planares formados por uma matriz periódica de furos em uma membrana de silício suspensa em ar. Essa investigação englobou atividades bastante intensivas, tanto de simulações por métodos numéricos, como de processos de fabricação dedicados à nanofotônica, assim como de caracterizações ópticas. Ao longo das discussões são identificados e analisados os mecanismos que afetaram de forma mais crítica a eficiência dos dispositivos propostos. Também foram avaliados os maiores problemas enfrentados nos processos de fabricação, e suas possíveis soluções foram apontadas. Os resultados demonstraram a possibilidade teórica de realizar tal integração de forma eficiente. O melhor entendimento sobre a relação entre a dispersão e os parâmetros geométricos dos guias de onda permitiram modelar curvas e divisores de potência que exibiram, respectivamente, larguras de banda em torno de 56 e 40 nm, cobrindo regiões do espectro com elevados índices de grupo. Foi possível fabricar cristais fotônicos com uma qualidade próxima das já reportadas na literatura sobre o tema e assim foram estabelecidas bases bastante sólidas para a fabricação de tais dispositivos localmente, sem a necessidade expressa de acessar centros de fabricação no exterior.
Silicon photonics is an emerging research field that has great potential to contribute to solving some of the technological problems nowadays. Maybe, one of the greatest challenges to be overcome is the bottleneck imposed by electrical interconnections in the expansion of the bandwidth of communication systems such as those of high performance computers. Slow light propagation in dispersionless media is a hot topic in the current research fields that seek to more efficiently explore the silicon optical properties, and thus, increase the compatibility between photonic components and CMOS technology by decreasing the footprint and power consumption of active optical components. This way, the manufacturing costs it is expected to be reduced by making the large-scale production of integrated optoelectronic devices feasible, and so, they could be used in short distance communication systems to expand the available bandwidth. Recent researches has also shown that photonic crystal slab waveguides are very promising to simultaneously control group velocity and devices dispersion, as well as in the reduction of the size of elements such as bends, power splitters and nanocavities due to the fields confinement through the photonic bandgap effect. Thus, this work addresses a study of the monolithic integration of slow light and dispersionless waveguides, 60º bends, and Y-junctions fabricated in air-bridge photonic crystal slabs formed by the drilling of a periodic array of air holes in a silicon membrane. The research was accomplished with intensive activities in numerical simulations, as well as in nanophotonic manufacturing processes, and optical characterizations. Throughout the discussions were identified and analyzed the mechanisms that more critically affected the devices efficiency. The major problems faced in the manufacturing processes were also evaluated, and their possible solutions were pointed out. The results demonstrated a theoretical possibility of performing such integration more efficiently. Having a better understandment about the relation between the photonic crystal waveguides geometrical parameters and their dispersion allowed the modeling of bends and power splitters which exhibited 3 dB bandwidths that covered, respectively, ranges around 56 and 40 nm, along spectral regions with very high group indices. It was possible to fabricate photonic crystals with a quality close to those already reported in the literature on this subject and thus, very solid bases were established for the manufacture of such devices locally, without the necessity of accessing manufacturing centers abroad.

Questa tesi si pone come obiettivo lo studio del processo d'inversione nel caso di curve di dispersione delle onde di Rayleigh, con lo scopo di determinare il profilo della velocità delle onde S. Ho utilizzato due diversi metodi. Il primo tipo riguarda un approccio perturbativo basato sul metodo degli elementi -finiti; il secondo, è un metodo di calcolo diretto basato sulla formula di Dix e costituisce un metodo non perturbativo. Quest'ultimo fornisce un modello iniziale che potrà essere in seguito ottimizzato attraverso l'approccio perturbativo. Inizialmente, test basati su dati sintetici sono stati effettuati al fine di simulare la crosta oceanica. È stato notato che eventuali variazioni al modello iniziale o variazioni allo spessore degli elementi finiti sembrano essere di grande impatto per il modello risultante. Successivamente, l'inversione perturbativa è stata applicata con dati di velocità di fase, appartenenti al database risultante dall' analisi del rumore sismico effettuata da Molinari et al. . Tali dati sono stati registrati da stazioni presenti in tutto il territorio italiano e nelle Alpi. Il modello iniziale risulta da una combinazione del modello ottenuto dalla ricerca di Molinari et al. per la parte della crosta e dal modello PREM per la parte del mantello. Le mappe 3D di velocità di S risultanti da questo metodo vengono successivamente paragonate con le equivalenti mappe risultate dal lavoro di Molinari et al. . Infine, lo stesso procedimento è stato ripetuto per un numero limitato di celle appartenenti al medesimo database. In questo caso, il modello iniziale è il modello risultante dall' inversione di Dix e può essere considerato un modello di riferimento adeguato per determinare la struttura 1D delle celle prese singolarmente. Tuttavia, si riscontrerebbero alcune limitazioni nel caso in cui il metodo venisse impiegato per ottenere strutture 3D.

I GC rappresentano i laboratori ideali nei quali studiare la dinamica stellare e i suoi effetti sull'evoluzione stellare; infatti, sono gli unici sistemi astrofisici soggetti a quasi tutti i processi fisici noti nella dinamica stellare, entro il tempo scala dell'età dell'Universo. Questo lavoro di tesi si inserisce nell'ambito di un progetto di ricerca che mira ad una dettagliata caratterizzazione dell'evoluzione dinamica dei GC della Galassia. In particolare, la misura delle velocità radiali di un ampio campione di stelle poste a differenti distanze dal centro dell’ammasso permette di derivare il profilo di dispersione di velocità del sistema,il quale ne riflette lo stato dinamico ed è utile per verificare la possibile presenza di un buco nero di massa intermedia al centro dell'ammasso. Lo studio delle velocità radiali delle singole stelle può altresì fornire informazioni riguardo la distribuzione di massa del sistema,oltreché la presenza di un'eventuale rotazione. Inoltre, la conoscenza della sola distribuzione di densità non è sufficiente a vincolare univocamente i modelli e fornire una visione completa della fisica dei GC, in quanto ad ogni determinato profilo di densità possono corrispondere diverse condizioni dinamiche. La contemporanea conoscenza del profilo di dispersione di velocità e della eventuale curva di rotazione permette di rimuovere la degenerazione causata dalla sola conoscenza del profilo di densità. Seguendo un approccio multi-strumentale,è possibile campionare l'intera estensione radiale dell'ammasso globulare: con lo spettrografo FLAMES, le regioni esterne (da distanze di circa 20 arcsec dal centro fino al raggio mareale dell'ammasso), con lo spettrografo KMOS, quelle intermedie e con lo strumento IFU ad ottiche adattive SINFONI, le regioni centrali (pochi arcsec dal centro). Questo lavoro di tesi consiste nell'analisi di spettri ad alta risoluzione acquisiti con FLAMES per un grande campione di stelle (979) localizzate nelle regioni esterne dell'ammasso NGC 2808,con lo scopo di misurare le loro velocità radiali.

Este trabalho é um estudo das dispersões metrológicas em aproximações de funções tidas como não conhecidas ou não totalmente conhecidas. A metodologia alternativa para esse fim são as redes neurais artificiais do tipo Multilayer Perceptrons (MLP), aqui utilizadas como aproximadoras de funções. As funções aproximadas são curvas de calibração decorrentes de indicações de instrumentos ou sistemas de medição numa calibração. Essas curvas levam consigo propriedades metrológicas e possuem, neste trabalho, papel de ponte entre os elementos considerados da teoria metrológica e os elementos considerados da teoria da Inteligência Computacional: as Multilayer Perceptrons (MLPs). Uma balança externa de medição de esforços aerodinâmicos e uma Língua Eletrônica (LE), aplicada na medição da concentração de cátions, foram os meios de aplicação dos conceitos dessa metodologia alternativa. As proposições desta tese visam implementar melhorias na exatidão do ajuste das curvas de calibração por meio da consideração dos seguintes fatores: grandezas de influências, incertezas nos Valores Objetivos (VOs), tendência de medição de erros sistemáticos ocultos ou não solvidos e indicadores de desempenho metrológicos. A indicação da qualidade na medição ou a indicação da competência metrológica de um laboratório de calibração é estabelecida pelos valores das incertezas, e a curva de calibração é o ponto de partida para os cálculos desses valores. Visto que o estabelecimento dessa curva é uma das dificuldades para o cálculo das incertezas e a própria curva é uma fonte de incerteza, sua aproximação requer uma a cuidadosa e meticulosa metodologia, daí a importância estratégica deste trabalho. As dispersões metrológicas possuem conotação de incertezas nas medições e elas são a base para a determinação de seu valor numérico; assim, os indicadores de desempenho podem representar essas dispersões e a recíproca também é verdadeira: a incerteza padrão pode ser um dos indicadores de desempenho. Sintetizando, nesta tese é mostrado de que forma a teoria da inteligência computacional adentra na teoria da metrologia e vice versa, nas esferas dos elementos aqui considerados.
The present study investigates metrological dispersions in fitting partially or totally unknown functions. An alternative method is the application of a multilayer perceptron neural network used here to fit functions. The fitting functions are calibration curves from calibration indications of measurement systems or instruments. These curves hold metrological properties and establish a link between elements of Metrological theory and elements of Computing Intelligence theory: the Multilayer Perceptrons. An external balance of aerodynamic forces and moments and an electronic tongue applied in the measurement of cation concentrations were the measurement systems used to apply the concepts of this alternative methodology. This thesis proposes improvements in the accuracy of fitting calibration curves considering the following factors: influence quantities, uncertainties about target values, tendency of hidden or not solved systematic errors and metrological performance functions. The measurement quality indicator or the laboratory metrological competence indicator is established by uncertainty values and the calibration curve is the starting point for the calculation of these values. The establishment of this curve is one of the difficulties in assessing uncertainties and the curve itself is an uncertainty source. Therefore, a careful and meticulous methodology is necessary in curve approximation, which explains the strategic importance of this work. Metrological dispersions have connotation of uncertainty in measurements and are the basis for calculating their numerical values, the performance functions can represent metrological dispersions and the opposite is also true: the standard uncertainty can be a performance function. Making a synthesis, this thesis demonstrates how computing intelligence theory takes into account the metrological theory and vice versa, in the elements of these theories that were discussed in the present study.

Neste trabalho, é apresentada uma formulação apropriada à análise de guias de ondas eletromagnéticos, cobrindo do espectro de microondas até o da óptica. Nas regiões a partir do ultravioleta, os comprimentos de onda são equivalentes às dimensões atômicas e a formulação necessita de uma abordagem quântica, que não é considerada neste estudo. A formulação é fundamentada nos métodos vetorial magnético e dos elementos finitos (MEF), em meios não homogêneos, anisotrópicos e não dissipativos, embora a dissipação possa ser facilmente introduzida na análise. Deu-se preferência à formulação com o campo magnético em vez do elétrico, pelo fato do campo magnético ignorar descontinuidades elétricas. Ele é contínuo em regiões de permeabilidade homogênea, propriedade dos meios dielétricos em geral ( = 0), independente da permissividade dos respectivos meios, conquanto os campos elétricos sejam descontínuos entre regiões de permissividades diferentes.
This work presents a suitable formulation to the analysis of electromagnetic waveguide, covering the spectrum of the microwave to optics. In regions from the ultraviolet, the wavelengths are equivalent to atomic dimensions and the design needs a quantum approach, which is not considered in this study. The formulation is based on the magnetic vector and the finite element methods (FEM), in non-homogeneous, anisotropic and non-dissipative dielectric materials, while the dissipation can be easily introduced in the analysis. Preference was given to the formulation with the magnetic field, because the magnetic field ignores electrical discontinuities. It is continuous in regions of homogeneous permeability, property of all dielectric materials (=0), independent of the permissiveness of respective regions, while electric fields are discontinuous between regions of different permittivities.

Um parâmetro físico essencial na modelagem matemática de qualidade de água visando a análise do impacto causado pelo lançamento de efluentes nos corpos d\'água superficiais é o coeficiente de dispersão longitudinal (DL). Portanto, a devida quantificação desse parâmetro é de grande importância para garantir a confiabilidade dos resultados de um modelo matemático de qualidade de água. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho propôs a quantificação de tal parâmetro. Para isso foram efetuados ensaios de campo de estímulo-resposta com traçador salino (cloreto de sódio) em dois cursos d\'água de pequeno porte localizados no município de Uberaba - MG. Após a realização dos ensaios de campo foram utilizados métodos diretos para a quantificação do parâmetro a partir dos dados experimentais. Os valores de DL mais confiáveis derivaram do método da convolução (routing procedure), variando de 0,70 a 10,44 m2/s. Também foi desenvolvido um modelo matemático de previsão do coeficiente de dispersão longitudinal a partir dos resultados experimentais com base em análise dimensional e a técnica de regressão linear múltipla. O r2 da equação gerada foi de 0,87, o que sugere que esta equação é adequada para a estimativa do coeficiente de dispersão longitudinal para os cursos d\'água estudados. Foi efetuada também a validação da aplicabilidade do modelo matemático desenvolvido a outras condições de campo diferentes daquelas utilizadas em sua dedução, com base em resultados experimentais obtido por outros autores. Por fim foi obtida, para os trechos dos cursos d\'água estudados, os coeficientes de dispersão longitudinal pelas equações empíricas e semi-empíricas de previsão mais conhecidas na literatura, comparando-se o desempenho de tais equações com a equação desenvolvida no trabalho através de análise estatística. A equação produzida no presente trabalho gerou melhores estimativas do coeficiente de dispersão longitudinal para os cursos d\'água estudados do que as equações utilizadas para comparação.
An essential parameter in the mathematical modeling of water quality in order to analyze the impact caused by the release of effluents into surface water bodies is the longitudinal dispersion coefficient (DL) . Therefore, proper quantification of this parameter is of great importance to ensure the reliability of the results of a mathematical model of water quality. Thus, this paper proposed to quantify this parameter. For this, field tests were conducted with stimulus-response tracer salt (sodium chloride) in two small streams located in Uberaba - MG. After completion of the field tests, direct methods to quantify the parameter from experimental data were used. The most reliable DL values derived from the routing procedure method, with valuer between 0.70 to 10.44 m2/s. Also we developed a mathematical model to predict the longitudinal dispersion coefficient from the experimental results based on dimensional analysis and multiple linear regression technique. The equation r2 generated was 0.87, suggesting that this equation is suitable for the estimation of longitudinal dispersion in the studied streams. We also performed the validation of the applicability of the developed mathematical model to other field conditions different from those of your deduction, based on experimental results obtained by other authors. Finally we obtained in the literature for the sections of the studied streams, the longitudinal dispersion coefficients by the best known empirical and semiempirical equations, comparing the performance of such equations with the equation developed in this work through statistical analysis. The equation produced in this study gave better predictions of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient for the studied streams than the equations used for comparison.

Essa dissertação aborda o tema de propagação de ondas de tensão em hastes metálicas retangulares. Este tipo de onda pode ser utilizada como base na verificação da integridade estrutural através de um ensaio não destrutivo (END). A propagação de ondas elásticas em sólidos apresenta muito potencial quando se deseja estimar a integridade de determinada estrutura. Porém para transformar esse fenômeno físico em uma técnica aplicável na detecção de danos, alguns passos devem ser seguidos, dentre eles: a compreensão das características de propagação da estrutura em estudo, in teração das ondas elásticas com defeitos, aten uação das ondas propagadoras devido a fontes de amortecimento e dispersão. Neste contexto o presente trabalho tem o principal foco no desenvolvimento de uma metodologia eficiente para a investigação da propagação de ondas de tensão em hastes retangulares metálicas, abordando o tema por diversos aspectos. No decorrer do mesmo são calcu ladas as curvas de dispersão de uma haste retangular com seção transversal de 15 x5 [rum], para uma faixa de frequência determinada [0,100 kHz], utilizando três metodologias distintas e realizando a comparação crítica entre elas. São realizadas investigações teóricas, de forma analítica e numérica (via análise explícita empregando elementos finitos) e uma inves tigação experimental das características de propagação da geometria referida. Também os efeitos da aten uação das ondas na geometria é estudado. Os resulta dos obtidos são discutidos procurando mostrar sua coerência e enfatizando a informação sobre o comportamento mecânico das ondas de tensão nesse tipo de estrutura, observando aspectos relevantes à concepção de técnicas de END que possi bilitem a avaliação da integridade dessas estruturas.
This dissertation addresses the issue of propagation of stress waves in metallic rectangular rods. This type of wave can be used as the integrity check structural integrity through a non-destructive test (NDT). The propagation of elastic waves in solids has a lot of potential when estimating the given structure integrity. But to turn this physical phenomenon in an applicable technique for the detection of damage, some steps should be taken, including: understanding of propagating characteristics of the structure under study, interaction of elastic waves with defects, attenuation of the propagating waves due to sources of damping and dispersion. In this context, the present work is the main focus in developing an effective methodology for investigating the propagation of stress waves in rectangular metal rods, addressing the issue by several aspects. During the same are calculated dispersion curves of a rod with rectangular cross section 15 x5 [mm], for a given frequency range [0,100 kHz], using three different methodologies and performing the critical comparison between them. Are performed theoretical investigations, in analytical and numerical form (via explicit analysis using finite element) and an experimental investigation of the propagation features said geometry. Also the effects of attenuation of the waves on geometry is studied. The results are discussed trying to show their consistency and emphasizing information about the mechanical behavior of stress waves in this type of structure, observing relevant aspects to the design of NDT techniques to enable the assessment of the integrity of these structures.

In recent decades techniques related to the measurement of elastic waves have advanced significantly. It is now possible with relatively inexpensive equipment to record amplitudes and frequency bands that were unthinkable two decades ago. This has led to the development of theoretical topics which application was questionable until not long ago, to profit from new technological potential in obtaining more and better experimental information. In this context the study of the propagation of guided waves in solids is presented as a knowledge that allows to detect damage with efficiency and economy in a number of structures in which at least one dimension is much larger than the other two. This is the case for rails, tubulations and pressure vessels among others. In this work, guided waves propagation characteristics are studied, first in a prismatic bar and then within the geometry of a rail. In both cases, dispersion curves were computed according two different work methodologies, first using an axisymmetric model and then corroborated with a model of periodic conditions. Finally propagation of a Tone-Burst waves were simulated on the analyzed geometries, leading to the discussion of how the waves scatter along its propagation. The results obtained were the dispersion curves of both sections.
En las últimas décadas técnicas relacionadas con la medición de ondas elásticas han avanzado sensiblemente. Actualmente, con equipamientos relativamente económicos es posible registrar amplitudes y franjas de frecuencia que eran impensables dos décadas atrás. Este hecho ha motivado que tópicos teóricos que hasta hace un tiempo tenían una aplicación cuestionable tengan que ser desarrollados para poder aprovechar las nuevas potencialidades tecnológicas en la obtención de mayor y mejor información experimental. En este contexto, el estudio de la propagación de ondas guiadas en sólidos se presenta como un conocimiento que posibilita detectar daño con eficiencia y economía en una serie de estructuras en las cuales por lo menos una dimensión es mucho mayor que las otras dos. Es el caso de estructuras tubulares, rieles o recipientes sometidos a presión entre otras. En el presente trabajo se estudian las características de propagación de ondas guiadas primeramente una barra rectangular y posteriormente en la geometría de un riel. En ambos casos, fueron calculadas las curvas de dispersión obtenidas con por dos metodologías de trabajo por elementos finitos, la primer metodología fue emplear un cálculo aplicando un modelo axisimétrico, y luego corroborado con un modelo de condiciones periódicas y posteriormente fue simulada la propagación de una onda tipo Toneburst sobre las geometrías analizadas discutiendo cómo dicha onda se dispersa durante su propagación. Los resultados obtenidos fueron las curvas de dispersión de ambas secciones.

Les deux principales prédictions de la théorie quantique des champs en espace-temps courbe, à savoir la radiation de Hawking et la production de paires de particules ayant lieu dans un espace-temps non stationnaire, n'ont jamais été testé expérimentalement et impliquent toutes deux des processus à ultra haute énergie. En conséquence, de telles prédictions doivent être considérées prudemment. En utilisant l'analogie avec des systèmes de matière condensée mise en avant par Unruh, leur analogue pourrait être testé en laboratoire. Par ailleurs, dispersion et dissipation sont toujours présentes dans de tels systèmes, ce qui régularise la théorie à courte distances. Lors d'expériences destinées à tester les prédictions citées ci-dessus, le bruit thermique modifiera le résultat. En effet, il existe une compétition entre l'émission stimulée dudit bruit thermique et l'émission spontanée issue du vide quantique. Afin de mesurer la radiation de Hawking analogue et de l'analogue des productions de paires (souvent appelé effet Casimir dynamique), il est alors nécessaire de calculer les conséquence de la dispersion et de la dissipation, ainsi que d'identifier des observables permettant de certifier que l'amission spontanée a eu lieu. Dans cette thèse, nous analyserons d'abord les effets de la dispersion et de la dissipation à la fois sur la radiation de Hawking et sur la production de paires de particules. Afin d'obtenir des résultats explicites, nous travaillerons avec l'espace-temps de de Sitter. Les symétries de la théorie nous permettront d'obtenir des résultats exacts. Ceux-ci seront alors appliqués aux trous noirs grâce aux ressemblances entre la région proche du trou noir et l'espace de de Sitter. Afin d’introduire de la dissipation, nous considérerons un modèle exactement soluble permettant de modéliser n'importe quel taux de dissipation. Dans un tel modèle, le champ est couplé de manière linéaire à un environnement contenant un ensemble dense de degrés de liberté. Dans un tel contexte, nous étudierons l'intrication des particules produites. Ensuite, nous considérerons des systèmes de matière condensée spécifiques, à savoir les condensats de Bose et les polaritons. Nous analyserons les effets de la dissipation sur l'intrication de l’effet Casimir dynamique. Enfin, nous étudieront de manière générique l'intrication de la radiation de Hawking en présence de dispersion pour des systèmes analogues
The two main predictions of quantum field theory in curved space-time, namely Hawking radiation and cosmological pair production, have not been directly tested and involve ultra high energy configurations. As a consequence, they should be considered with caution. Using the analogy with condensed matter systems put forward by Unruh, their analogue versions could be tested in the lab. Moreover, the high energy behavior of these systems is known and involved dispersion and dissipation, which regulate the theory at short distances. When considering experiments which aim to test the above predictions, the thermal noise will contaminate the outcome. Indeed, there will be a competition between the stimulated emission from thermal noise and the spontaneous emission out of vacuum. In order to measure the quantum analogue Hawking radiation, or the analogue pair production also called dynamical Casimir effect, one should thus compute the consequences of ultraviolet dispersion and dissipation, and identify observables able to establish that the spontaneous emission took place. In this thesis, we first analyze the effects of dispersion and dissipation on both Hawking radiation and pair particle production. To get explicit results, we work in the context of de Sitter space. Using the extended symmetries of the theory in such a background, exact results are obtained. These are then transposed to the context of black holes using the correspondence between de Sitter space and the black hole near horizon region. To introduce dissipation, we consider an exactly solvable model producing any decay rate. In such a model, the field is linearly coupled to an environment containing a dense set of degrees of freedom. We also study the quantum entanglement of the particles so produced. In a second part, we consider explicit condensed matter systems, namely Bose Einstein condensates and exciton-polariton systems. We analyze the effects of dissipation on entanglement produced by the dynamical Casimir effect. As a final step, we study the entanglement of Hawking radiation in the presence of dispersion for a generic analogue system

Cette thèse porte sur la propagation des ondes magnéto-électro-élastiques dans les structures inhomogènes, et tout particulièrement de l’effet d’un champ magnétique externe sur des structures multicouches et des cristaux phononiques combinant des matériaux à la fois piézoélectriques et magnéto-élastiques. Pour déterminer les caractéristiques des ondes se propageant dans ces structures magnéto-électro-élastiques, un modèle de matériau piézomagnétique équivalent à un matériau magnéto-élastique en couche mince, polarisé à saturation autour d’une position d’équilibre définie par l’orientation et l’amplitude d’un champ magnétique externe appliqué à celui-ci, est développé. Il est combiné à une méthode originale de calcul des courbes de dispersion dans les multicouches, basée sur une décomposition en polynômes de Legendre pour les couches d’épaisseur finie, et en polynômes de Laguerre pour le substrat semi-infini. Ce modèle est utilisé pour le cas d’un film mince de TbCo2/FeCo, présentant une anisotropie magnétique uni-axiale dans le plan et une magnétostriction géante, déposé sur un substrat de LiNbO3 sous forme de film ou en réseau de plots cylindriques. On montre que dans ce dernier cas, correspondant à un cristal phononique magnéto-élastiques à résonance locale, il est possible de contrôler sans aucun contact la structure de bande par l’application d’un champ magnétique externe. Ainsi, une sensibilité de 50 kHz par Oersted a été calculée pour une bande plate située dans le gap de Bragg d’un tel cristal phononique. Cette sensibilité est suffisante pour envisager une application du dispositif comme un détecteur très sensible de champs magnétiques localisés
This thesis focuses on the propagation of magneto-electro-elastic waves in inhomogeneous structures, and in particular the effect of an external magnetic field on multilayer structures and on phononic crystals that combine both piezoelectric and magneto-elastic materials. To determine the characteristics of waves propagating in magneto-electro-elastic structures, an effective piezomagnetic material model, equivalents to a thin layer of magneto-elastic material, is developed. The thin layer is polarized to saturation around the equilibrium position defined by the direction and amplitude of an external magnetic field. This model is combined with a method of dispersion curves calculation in multilayer structures, based on a decomposition in Legendre polynomials for layers of finite thickness and Laguerre polynomials for a semi-infinite substrate. The model is used for the case of a TbCo2/FeCo thin film, presenting an in plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and a giant magnetostriction, deposited as a film, or as a lattice of cylinders, on a substrate of LiNbO3. It is shown that in the latter case, corresponding to a local resonance magneto-elastic phononic crystal, it is possible to control, without any contact, the band structure by applying an external magnetic field. Thus, a sensitivity of 50kHz by Oersted was calculated for a flat band located in Bragg band gap for such phononic crystal. This sensitivity is sufficient to enable the use of this device as a sensitive detector of localized magnetic fields

Abstract:
The study of intraspecific diversity is essential in ecology and evolution as they reveal fine-scale patterns and it is crucial in conservation planning. The main aim of this thesis is to study the evolutionary history of two Iberian Soricomorpha: The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) and the Mediterranean water shrew (Neomys anomalus). Both mammals are semi-aquatic and endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. To this end, different approaches were applied, such as genomics, phylogeography and species distribution modelling (SDM), in the three chapters of this thesis. In Chapter 1, the main aim was to study the population structure of the Pyrenean desman using genomic markers. In order to achieve this objective, we optimized a genomic reduction protocol, double-digestion RAD sequencing (ddRAD), for the low DNA quantities needed when working with endangered species, like the Pyrenean desman. Moreover, we filtered and evaluated the library and determined the sex of the specimens used. Then, we estimated the heterozygosity rate and we determined population structure and evolutionary units performing a Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a Structure analysis and a genomic phylogenetic tree. As result, the heterozygosity rate turned out to be one of the lowest in mammals and five clades were delimited in the population structure. These results have important conservation implications. In Chapter 2, our main aim was to infer the mitochondrial genetic structure and the postglacial dispersal patterns of the north-western clade of the Pyrenean desman, using non-invasive samples. We delimited a contact zone in the Cantabrian Mountains and we studied the structure of nucleotide diversity through an interpolation map, the genetic structure through an Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) and the dispersal patterns through an Isolation-by-Distance approach. The results revealed areas of very high genetic diversity and areas of extremely low genetic diversity. Moreover, half of the genetic structure can be explained by the isolation of river basin, meaning that the desmans were not completely isolated in these basins, which is consistent with postglacial overland dispersal between the basins. This result was confirmed by the Isolation-by-Distance approach, which also revealed a high relative importance of overland dispersal during the Holocene but a similiar relative importance of overland and river dispersal for short distances. This study has also conservation implications, as it suggests that terrestrial corridors within the desman distribution range should also be restored and preserved. Finally, in Chapter 3, we studied the phylogeography of the Mediterranean water shrew, which was recently delimited as a species. We studied its phylogenetic structure using a Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference phylogenetic trees. Moreover, we interpolated the nucleotide diversity and performed a species distribution modelling. The results revealed two main clades correlated with geographic structure. Moreover, the study suggests certain coincidence of high genetic diversity areas with optimal areas in the Last Glacial Maximum, which is consistent with the location of the glacial refugia.
La diversidad dentro de especies es clave desde el punto de vista ecológico y evolutivo y, además, para la conservación. El principal objetivo de esta tesis es estudiar la historia evolutiva de dos mamíferos ibéricos: el Desmán de los Pirineos (Galemys pyrenaicus) y el Musgaño de Cabrera (Neomys anomalus). Para ello, se han utilizado diversas metodologías, entre ellas genómica, filogeografía y modelos de distribución de especies, a lo largo de los tres capítulos que conforman esta tesis. En el capítulo 1, se busca estudiar la estructura genética del desmán usando marcadores genómicos. Para ello, se optimizó un protocolo de reducción genómica (ddRADSeq) y se realizaron análisis genómicos con los datos resultantes de la librería. Los resultados revelaron una heterozigosidad extremadamente baja y cinco clados como unidades evolutivas. Estos resultados tienen repercusión en la conservación de la especie. En el capítulo 2, se estudia la estructura genética mitocondrial y los patrones de dispersión postglacial del desmán en el clado nor-occidental. Los resultados sugieren que los desmanes no estuvieron completamente aislados en las cuencas de los ríos y se dispersaron durante el Holoceno por tierra para realizar desplazamientos largos. Por el contrario, para desplazamientos cortos, los resultados sugieren que se pudieron desplazar tanto por el río como por tierra. Finalmente, en el capítulo 3, se estudia la filogeografía e historia evolutiva del Musgaño de Cabrera y se ha descubierto una estructura genética dividida en dos clados correlacionados con la estructura geográfica. Además, los resultados sugieren la existencia de refugios glaciares y una compleja historia postglacial.

Os métodos de ondas superficiais com ênfase nas ondas Rayleigh foram utilizados como o núcleo desse trabalho de Doutorado. Inicialmente, as ondas Rayleigh foram modeladas permitindo o estudo de sensibilidade de suas curvas de dispersão sob diferentes configurações de parâmetros físicos representando diversos modelos de camadas, em que pôde ser observado parâmetros com maior e menor sensibilidade e também alguns efeitos provocados por baixas razões de Poisson. Além disso, na fase de inversão dos dados a modelagem das ondas Rayleigh foi utilizada para a construção da função objeto, que agregada ao método de mínimos quadrados, a partir do método de Levenberg-Marquardt, permitiu a implementação de um algoritmo de busca local responsável pela inversão de dados das ondas superficiais. Por se tratar de um procedimento de busca local, o algoritmo de inversão foi complementado por uma etapa de pré-inversão com a geração de um modelo inicial para que o procedimento de inversão fosse mais rápido e eficiente. Visando uma eficiência ainda maior do procedimento de inversão, principalmente em modelos de camadas com inversão de velocidades, foi implementado um algoritmo de pós-inversão baseado em um procedimento de tentativa e erro minimizando os valores relativos da raiz quadrada do erro quadrático médio (REQMr) da inversão dos dados. Mais de 50 modelos de camadas foram utilizados para testar a modelagem, a pré-inversão, inversão e pós-inversão dos dados permitindo o ajuste preciso de parâmetros matemáticos e físicos presentes nos diversos scripts implementados em Matlab. Antes de inverter os dados adquiridos em campo, os mesmos precisaram ser tratados na etapa de processamento de dados, cujo objetivo principal é a extração da curva de dispersão originada devido às ondas superficiais. Para isso, foram implementadas, também em Matlab, três metodologias de processamento com abordagens matemáticas distintas. Essas metodologias foram testadas e avaliadas com dados sintéticos e reais em que foi possível constatar as virtudes e deficiências de cada metodologia estudada, bem como as limitações provocadas pela discretização dos dados de campo. Por último, as etapas de processamento, pré-inversão, inversão e pós-inversão dos dados foram unificadas para formar um programa de tratamento de dados de ondas superficiais (Rayleigh). Ele foi utilizado em dados reais originados pelo estudo de um problema geológico na Bacia de Taubaté em que foi possível mapear os contatos geológicos ao longo dos pontos de aquisição sísmica e compará-los a um modelo inicial existente baseado em observações geomorfológicas da área de estudos, mapa geológico da região e informações geológicas globais e locais dos movimentos tectônicos na região. As informações geofísicas associadas às geológicas permitiram a geração de um perfil analítico da região de estudos com duas interpretações geológicas confirmando a suspeita de neotectônica na região em que os contatos geológicos entre os depósitos Terciários e Quaternários foram identificados e se encaixaram no modelo inicial de hemi-graben com mergulho para Sudeste.
The surface wave methods to Rayleigh waves were used as the center of this Doctoral work. Initially, the Rayleigh waves were modeled, what enabled the study of the sensitivity of dispersion curves about different sets of physical parameters representing several layer models, wherein it could be observed parameters with higher and lower sensitivity and also some effects caused by low Poisson ratios. Moreover, in the data inversion step the Rayleigh modeling was used for the construction of the object function, that aggregate to the least-squares method, by Levenberg-Marquardt, allowed the implementation of a local search algorithm responsible for data inversion of the surface waves. By reason of being a local search procedure, the data inversion algorithm was complemented with a pre-inversion step wherein an initial model was generated so that the inversion procedure was faster and efficient. Seeking a more efficiency of the inversion procedure, mainly to layer models with velocities inversion, it was implemented a post-inversion algorithm based in a trial and error procedure minimizing the values of the relative Root Mean Squared Error (rRMSE) of the data inversion. More than 50 layer models were used to test the data modeling, pre-inversion, inversion and post-inversion allowing the precise fit of the mathematical and physical parameters present in the several scripts implemented in Matlab. Before to invert the field-acquired data, they need to be treated in the data processing step, whose main aim is the extraction of the dispersion curve caused due the surface waves. For this, three processing methodologies with different mathematical approaches were implemented, also in Matlab. These methodologies were tested and evaluated with synthetic and real data and it was possible to find their strengths and weaknesses, as well as the limitations caused by discretization of the field data. Lastly, the data processing, pre-inversion, inversion and post-inversion steps were unified to form a complete data treatment program of surface waves (Rayleigh). It was used to real data originated by study of a geological problem in the Bacia de Taubaté wherein it was possible to map the geologic contacts along of the seismic acquisition points. The results were compared to an existing initial model based in geomorphological observations of the study area, geological map and global and local geologic information of the tectonic movements in the region. Pendant sa mission opérationnelle, un moyen de transport est soumis à des excitations acoustiques, aérodynamiques et structurales à large bande. Les moyens de transport, tels que les avions, les lanceurs spatiaux, les bateaux, les voitures, les trains, etc., sont conçus pour accomplir un objectif principal, généralement de transférer une charge utile (passagers, marchandises, satellites, par exemple) d’un point à un autre, en maintenant toujours un niveau élevé de confort, de sécurité et de capacité de survie de la charge utile. Les réglementations nationales et internationales en matière de pollution sonore sont de plus en plus strictes ; les scientifiques et les acteurs industriels sont confrontés à ces défis de développement de nouveaux matériaux et de nouveaux choix de conception.Les matériaux composites, les géométries complexes et les nouvelles conceptions sont étudiés, ce qui rend l’étude et la prédiction de la réponse vibro-acoustique de ces structures un défi énorme. La complexité rend la dérivation des modèles analytiques plus difficile à obtenir ; l’utilisation d’outils numériques est d’une importance cruciale. L’une des méthodes les plus utilisées est la modélisation par éléments finis (FE), mais l’énorme quantité de degrés de liberté associée à un coût de calcul élevé limite son utilisation dans la gamme de basses fréquences. Au cours des dernières décennies, différentes méthodes sont dérivées pour obtenir les caractéristiques de dispersion des structures ; l’une des plus courantes est la méthode des éléments finis ondulatoire (WFEM), qui est basée sur la propagation des ondes. Cette méthode a été appliquée sur diverses structures simples et complexes, dérivant une formulation soit 1D que 2D, également étendu à des structures courbes.Récemment, une approche énergétique a été dérivée à partir de la méthode de Prony : la méthode de corrélation d’onde inhomogène (IWC). Cette approche trouve son applicabilité dans la gamme de fréquence moyenne et haute, où le chevauchement modal est assez élevé. La méthode IWC est basée sur la projection du champ d’onde sur une onde itinérante inhomogène. Le nombre d’onde dominant, à chaque fréquence, est obtenu par maximisation de la fonction de corrélation entre le champ d’onde projet\'e et l’onde inhomogène.Dans ce contexte, une version étendue de la méthode IWC est dérivée, permettant de décrire les courbes de dispersion des structures complexes : plaques étroites périodiques, plaques composites, panneaux raidis, panneaux composites courbes et panneaux raidis courbes. La méthode a l’avantage d’être applicable dans un environnement opérationnel, en utilisant des emplacements d’acquisition clairsemés. Une analyse complète des caractéristiques de dispersion est effectuée, même en présence d’éléments périodiques et de dispositifs de contrôle des vibrations, décrivant les écarts de bande directement corrélés dans certaines régions de fréquence et l’atténuation du niveau de vibration. Une estimation numérique et expérimentale du facteur de perte d’amortissement structurel est calculée. Une description de la dynamique locale en présence de résonateurs à petite échelle, de l’effet de la périodicité et de l’identification du comportement multimodale sont également capturés.Tous les résultats des simulations numériques sont validés expérimentalement sur des meta-structures complexes à grande échelle, comme un panneau sandwich imprimé en 3D, un panneau courbé sandwich en composite et un panneau d'avion en aluminium. L’effet des résonateurs à petite échelle imprimés en 3D à orientation industrielle sur la réponse vibro-acoustique des structures considérées est réalisé en tenant compte soit de l'excitation champ acoustique diffus et de l'excitations mécaniques

The transportation means, such as aircrafts, space launchers, ships, cars, trains, etc., are designed to accomplish a primary goal, usually to transfer a payload (passengers, goods, satellites, for example) from a point to another, always keeping a high level of comfort, safety and survivability of the payload. National and international regulations about noise pollution are more and more stringent; scientists and industrial players are facing with these challenges developing new materials and new design choices. Composite materials, complex geometries and new design concepts are investigated, making the analysis and the prediction of the vibroacoustic response of these structures a huge challenge. The complexity makes the derivation of analytical models harder to obtain; the use of numerical tools is of crucial importance. One of the most employed method is the Finite Element (FE) modeling, but the huge amount of degrees of freedom together with a high computational cost limits its use in the low frequency range. In the last decades, different methods are derived to obtain the dispersion characteristics of the structures; one of the most common is the Wave Finite Element Method (WFEM), that is based on the wave propagation. This method has been applied on various simple and complex structures, deriving both 1D and 2D formulations, extended also to curved structures. Recently, an energetic approach has been derived starting from the Prony’s method, the Inhomogeneous Wave Correlation (IWC) method. This approach has its applicability in the mid-high frequency range, where the modal overlap is quite high. The IWC method is based on the projection of the wavefield on an inhomogeneous traveling wave. The dominant wavenumber, at each frequency, is obtained by maximization of the correlation function between the projected wavefield and the inhomogeneous wave. In this context, an extended version of the IWC method is derived, allowing to describe the dispersion curves of complex structures: periodic narrow plates, composite plates, ribbed panels, composite curved shells and curved stiffened structures. The method has the advantage to be applied in an operational environment, making use of sparse acquisition locations. A complete dispersion characteristics analysis is conducted, even in presence of periodic elements and vibration-control devices, describing the directly correlated band-gaps in certain frequency regions and general vibration level attenuation. A numerical and experimental estimation of the structural damping loss factor is computed. A description of the local dynamics in presence of small-scale resonators, of the periodicity effect and the identification of the multi-modal behavior are also captured. All the results of the numerical simulations are experimentally validated on complex large-scale meta-structures, such as a 3D-printed sandwich panel, a curved composite laminated sandwich panel and a aluminum aircraft sidewall panel. The effect of industrially-oriented 3D-printed small-scale resonators on the vibro-acoustic response of the considered structures is conducted, taking in account both diffuse acoustic field and mechanical excitations
Tijdens zijn operationele opdracht, is een vervoersgemiddelde onderworpen aan breedband akoestische, aërodynamische en structuur - gedragen excitaties. De transportmiddelen, zoals vliegtuigen, ruimtelanceerders, schepen, auto’s, treinen, enz., zijn ontworpen om een primair doel te verwezenlijken, gewoonlijk om een lading (passagiers, goederen, satellieten, bijvoorbeeld) van een punt naar een andere over te brengen, altijd houdend een hoog niveau van comfort, veiligheid en overleefbaarheid van de lading. De nationale en internationale regelgeving inzake geluidshinder is steeds strenger; wetenschappers en industriële spelers worden geconfronteerd met deze uitdagingen bij de ontwikkeling van nieuwe materialen en nieuwe ontwerpkeuzes. Samengestelde materialen, complexe geometrieën en nieuwe ontwerpconcepten worden onderzocht, waardoor de studie en de voorspelling van de vibroakoestische respons van deze structuren een enorme uitdaging. De complexiteit maakt de afleiding van analytische modellen moeilijker te verkrijgen; het gebruik van numerieke tools is van cruciaal belang. Een van de meest gebruikte methoden is de FE-modellering (Finite Element), maar de enorme hoeveelheid vrijheidsgraden in combinatie met hoge computerkosten beperkt het gebruik ervan in het lage frequentiebereik. Deze methode is toegepast op verschillende eenvoudige en complexe structuren, die een 1D- en 2D-formulering afleiden, ook uitgebreid tot gebogen structuren. Er wordt een volledige analyse van de verspreidingskenmerken uitgevoerd, zelfs in aanwezigheid van periodieke elementen en apparatuur voor trillingscontrole, die de direct met elkaar verband houdende bandhiaten in bepaalde frequentiegebieden en de verzwakking van het trillingsniveau beschrijven. Er wordt een numerieke en expexiii rimentele schatting van de verliesfactor van de structurele demping berekend. Een beschrijving van de lokale dynamiek in aanwezigheid van kleinschalige resonatoren, van het periodiciteitseffect en de identificatie van het multimodale gedrag worden ook vastgelegd. Alle resultaten van de numerieke simulaties worden experimenteel gevalideerd op complexe grootschalige meta-structuren, zoals een 3D-gedrukt sandwichpaneel, een gebogen samengesteld gelamineerd sandwichpaneel en een aluminium zijpaneel aan de zijkant van het vliegtuig. Het effect van industrieel georiënteerde 3D-gedrukte kleinschalige resonatoren op de trillings-akoestische respons van de overwogen structuren wordt uitgevoerd, waarbij rekening wordt gehouden met zowel diffuus akoestisch veld als mechanische excitaties

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on solute transport upscaling. Upscaling of solute transport is usually required to obtain computationally efficient numerical models in many field applications such as, remediation of aquifers, environmental risk to groundwater resources or the design of underground repositories of nuclear waste. The non-Fickian behavior observed in the field, and manifested by peaked concentration profiles with pronounced tailing, has questioned the use of the classical advection-dispersion equation to simulate solute transport at field scale using numerical models with discretizations that cannot capture the field heterogeneity. In this context, we have investigated the use of the advection-dispersion equation with mass transfer as a tool for upscaling solute transport in a general numerical modeling framework. Solute transport by groundwater is very much affected by the presence of high and low water velocity zones, where the contaminant can be channelized or stagnant. These contrasting water velocity zones disappear in the upscaled model as soon as the scale of discretization is larger that the size of these zones. We propose, for the modeling solute transport at large scales, a phenomenological model based on the concept of memory functions, which are used to represent the unresolved processes taking place within each homogenized block in the numerical models. We propose a new method to estimate equivalent blocks, for which transport and mass transfer parameters have to be provided. The new upscaling technique consists in replacing each heterogeneous block by a homogeneous one in which the parameters associated to a memory functions are used to represent the unresolved mass exchange between highly mobile and less mobile zones occurring within the block. Abstract:

The future International Linear Collider (ILC) and Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) are intended for precision measurements of phenomena discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and also for the discovery of new physics. In order to offer optimal conditions for such experiments, the new colliders must produce very-high-luminosity collisions at energies in the TeV regime.

Emittance growth caused by imperfections in the main linacs is one of the factors limiting the luminosity of CLIC and ILC. In this thesis, various emittance preservation and luminosity tuning techniques have been tested and developed in order to meet the challenging luminosity requirements.

Beam-based alignment was shown to be insufficient for reduction of emittance growth. Emittance tuning bumps provide an additional powerful preservation tool. After initial studies of tuning bumps designed to treat certain imperfections, a general strategy for design of optimised bumps was developed. The new bumps are optimal both in terms of emittance reduction performance and convergence speed. They were clearly faster than previous bumps and reduced emittance growth by nearly two orders of magnitude both for CLIC and ILC.

Time-dependent imperfections such as ground motion and magnet vibrations also limit the performance of the colliders. This type of imperfections was studied in detail, and a new feedback system for optimal reduction of emittance growth was developed and shown to be approximately ten times more efficient than standard trajectory feedbacks.

The emittance tuning bumps require fast and accurate diagnostics. The possibility of measuring emittance using a wide laserwire was introduced and simulated with promising results. While luminosity cannot be directly measured fast enough, it was shown that a beamstrahlung tuning signal could be used for efficient optimisation of a number of collision parameters using tuning bumps in the Final Focus System.

Complete simulations of CLIC emittance tuning bumps, including static and dynamic imperfections and realistic tuning and emittance measurement procedures, showed that an emittance growth six times lower than that required may be obtained using these methods.

Este trabalho estudou a composição química e metalográfica (microestrutura, tamanho de grão, teor de inclusões) de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos, desenvolvidos para aplicações como biomateriais, utilizados na fabricação de implantes ortopédicos, removidos de pacientes afetados por quadro inflamatório, e comparou as superfícies das amostras, através da Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) após ataque eletroquímico. Os resultados da análise química, por Espectrometria de Emissão Ótica e Microanálise por Dispersão de Energia (EDS), mostraram que todos os grupos apresentaram conformidade com as normas ASTM F138-92 e ABNT NBR ISO 5832-9:2008. O tamanho de grão foi determinado por Microscopia Ótica e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV). As superfícies das amostras foram analisadas por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), depois de serem submetidos a ensaio de polarização cíclica potenciodinâmica em potencial de 50 mV após a região passiva em meio de solução de Ringer Lactato e solução de NaCl 0,9 mol.L-1na temperatura de 36,5 oC. Essas análises por MEV foram conduzidas nas amostras para identificar o tipo de corrosão apresentada. Concluiu-se que todos os implantes apresentavam tamanho de grão superior ao recomendado pela norma. Constatou-se também a presença de ferrita delta em oito dos doze implantes removidos, que de acordo com a norma ASTM 138-92, não deveria ser percebida microscopicamente com um aumento de 100 vezes. Verificou-se ainda que em meio de NaCl, o aço ISO 5832-9 ao contrário do aço F138, não apresentou nenhuma forma de corrosão localizada. Em solução de Ringer lactato, após ataque por 15 min. no potencial de 1000 mV/ECS foi notada a presença de pites no aço ISO 5832-9. O ensaio de polarização cíclica revelou que um dos aços, identificado como ISO 5832 9 apresentou resistência à corrosão localizada muito superior ao outro identificado como F 138, além de não liberar íons metálicos nas soluções eletrolíticas. Essa propriedade é principalmente atribuída ao aumento da estabilidade do filme passivo, que por sua vez, é favorecida pela presença do nitrogênio em solução sólida intersticial na austenita do aço ISO 5832-9. Os ensaios de polarização revelaram-se úteis para indicar a baixa resistência à corrosão por pites exibida “in-vitro” pelas próteses. As amostras do aço F 138 após serem submetidas ao ensaio eletroquímico em solução de Ringer lactato apresentaram perdas de 63% de níquel e 26% de ferro em relação à composição inicial. Tais elementos foram deslocados eletroquimicamente na forma iônica para a solução de Ringer lactato, onde formaram precipitados sendo, portanto, um forte indicador de que as reações sofridas pelos portadores das próteses foram motivadas por esses íons metálicos, que são posteriormente incorporados no organismo. Pretende-se com os resultados dessa pesquisa propor aos órgãos governamentais reguladores de normas técnicas e de vigilância sanitária, bem como a médicos e hospitais que exijam dos fabricantes de próteses de aços inoxidáveis laudos técnicos que atestem a qualidade dos implantes, onde cada lote de fabricação das peças seja acompanhado por certificados garantindo a composição química e as características metalográficas especificadas pelas norma existentes no Brasil.
This work has studied the chemical and metallographic composition (microstructure, grain size, inclusion rate) of austenitic stainless steels which were developed to be applied as biomaterials, and used in the production of orthopedical implants, removed from patients which had been affected by inflammation; it has also been compared the sample surfaces, by means of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) after electrochemical attack. The results of chemical analysis, performed by optical emission spectroscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) have shown that all samples are in agreement with the ASTM F138-92 e ABNT NBR ISO 5832-9:2008 regulations, whereas the grain size has been determined by optical microscopy and SEM. The surfaces of the samples were analyzed by SEM and EDS techniques; samples were submitted to potentiodynamic cyclic polarization tests in 50 mV potential after the passivation region in Ringer lactate and NaCl 0,9 mol.L-1 solutions at 36,5C; such SEM measurements were done to identify the type of corrosion over the samples. It has been concluded that all implants showed average grain sizes above the recommended by the regulations; also the presence of delta ferrite in eight of the twelve investigated implants has been seen, which according to the ASTM 138-92 regulation this would not been possible even with a 100-fold increase at the optical microscope. It has also been verified that in NaCl medium the ISO 5832-9 steel did not present any kind of localized corrosion, instead of F 138 steel; in Ringer lactate solution, after 15 minutes attack at 1000mV/SCE, has been noted the presence of pits for ISO 5832-9 steel. The cyclic polarization measurements have revealed that one of the investigated steels, named ISO 5832-9, presented a very high resistance to localized corrosion when compared to the F 138 samples, besides they did not release metallic ions to the electrolytic solutions. This characteristic can be mainly attributed to the increasing of the passivation film stability, which is also favored by the presence of nitrogen atoms in the solid solution composing the structure of ISO 5832-9 steel. The pit corrosion tests have shown very useful to indicate the low resistance to pit corrosion, present “in-vitro” in all the studied samples. The EDS mapping analysis of F 138 samples, submitted to electrochemical attack in Ringer lactate medium, have shown a loss of 63% of nickel and 26% of iron, when compared to the initial composition; such metals were electrochemically solubilized to the Ringer lactate solution, where they can probably precipitate from the solution, being a strong indication that the reactions taking place in the patients have been motivated by these metal ions, which can be incorporated by the human body. The obtained results of this work are the basis of a tentative proposition to the governmental organisms which are the responsible for the regulation of the technical specifications for the prosthesis producers, requiring from them technical reports assuring the quality for the implant pieces, i.e., for each manufacturing lot a description or a special certificate containing the chemical composition and the metallographic characteristics specified by the Brazilian laws.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to find out the effective diffusivity (Deff) of a porous material – γ-alumina, using an unsteady state method with two inert gases at ambient condition with no reactions. For porous materials, Deff is important because it determines the amount of reactants that transfers to the surface of pores. When Deff is known, the apparent tortuosity factor of γ-alumina is calculated using the parallel pore model. The apparent tortuosity factor is important because: (a) it can be used to back-calculate Deff at reacting conditions; (b) once Deff with reactions is known, the Thiele modulus can be calculated and hence the global reaction rate can be found; (c) apparent tortuosity factor is also important for modelling purposes (e.g. modelling a packed-bed column or a catalytic combustion reactor packed with porous γ-alumina in various shapes and monoliths). Experimental measurements were performed to determine the effective diffusivity of a binary pair of non-reacting gases (He in N2, and N2 in He) in spherical γ-alumina pellets (1 mm diameter), and in γ-alumina washcoated monoliths (washcoat thickness 20 to 60 µm, on 400 cpsi (cells per square inch) cordierite support). The method used is based on the chromatographic technique, where a gas flows through a tube, which is packed with the sample to be tested. A pulse of tracer gas is injected (e.g. using sample loops: 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 ml) and by using an on-line mass spectrometer the response in the outlet of the packed bed is monitored over time. For the spherical pellets, the tube i.d. = 13.8 mm and the packed bed depths were 200 and 400 mm. For monoliths the tube i.d. = 7 mm and the packed lengths were 500 and 1000 mm. When the chromatographic technique was applied to the monoliths, it was observed that experimental errors can be significant, and it is very difficult to interpret the data. However, the technique worked well with the spherical pellets, and the effective diffusivity of He in N2 was 0.75 – 1.38 × 10-7 m2 s-1, and for N2 in He was 1.81 – 3.10 × 10-7 m2 s-1. Using the parallel pore model to back-calculate the apparent tortuosity factor, then a value between 5 to 9.5 was found for the pellets.

Abstract:
The majority of structural studies on DNA have been carried out using fibre diffraction, while studies of its dynamics and thermal behaviour have been mainly performed in solution. When the DNA double helix is heated, it exhibits local separation of the two strands that grow in size with temperature and lead to their complete separation. This work has investigated various aspects of this phenomenon. The experiments reported in this thesis were carried out on films of oriented fibres of DNA prepared with the Wet Spinning Apparatus. Thus, sample preparation and characterisation are essential parts of the research. The structures of two forms of DNA, A and B, have been explored as a function of relative humidity at fixed ionic conditions. A method to eliminate traces of ever-present B-form contamination in A-form samples was established. The high orientation of the DNA molecules within the samples allowed us to investigate dynamical fluctuations and the melting transition of DNA using neutron scattering, which can provide the spatial information crucial to understand a phase transition, probing the static correlation length along the molecule as a function of temperature. The transition has been investigated for A and B-forms in order to understand its dependence on molecular configuration.Furthermore, after the first melting, denatured DNA films show typical glass behaviour. Their thermal relaxation has been explored using calorimetry.Neutron and X-ray inelastic scattering (INS and IXS) were used in the past to measure longitudinal phonons in fibre DNA, and the results shown disagreement. Recent INS measurements supported with phonon simulations have been crucial to understand the different dispersion curves reported to date. Experiments using INS and IXS have been carried out to continue with this investigation. Attempts to observe the transverse fluctuations associated to the thermal denaturing of DNA, never experimentally investigated before, have been made.

In this thesis, the dispersion curves of surface wave of layered systems are simulated in order to study the influence parameters of dispersion curve and the applicable range of spectral analysis of surface wave method. The influence parameters studied by using the computer program GREEN9 include the distance between first/second receivers and seismic source(d1,d2), number of layers, thickness of the first layer(h1), stiffness ratio between layers(E1/E2), damping ratio(D), bottom boundary, etc. In addition, six engineering profiles are modeled, by using the programs GREEN9 and FLAC and the dispersion curves obtained by the two numerical programs are compared. The results show that upon both soil deposits and pavements of which the stiffness ratio smaller than 25, good estimation of the wave velocity of the first layer can be obtained to express for the h1/d1 in the range of 0.25~1. Good estimation of the wave velocity of the bottom layer can be obtained in the range 0.1~0.25.The influence of the damping ratio on the dispersion curve of a uniform profile is found not significant. However, for a layered system, the distance must be kept closer to the source in order to determine the wave velocity of the first layer. In other words, by using a large , good estimation of the wave velocity can not be obtained. If bedrock is found beneath the soil deposit, oscillation in the dispersion curve can be found mainly due to the reflection of body waves. When the layered system consists of more than three layers, the wave velocity of the middle layer couldn’t be easily determined. The comparison between the results obtained by GREEN9 and FLAC shows that the general trend is the same for both dispersion curves. Nevertheless the oscillation of the dispersion curve obtained by the FLAC is much significant and also the effective wavelength in the results of the FLAC is generally longer in the shallow layer.

As the traditional propagator matrix method not considering the damping effect, this study proposes a Damped modified propagator matrix method for calculation the Rayleigh wave dispersion curves of strata, and combined with the package of ReMi and the nonlinear waveform inversion method to invert strata’s parameters and compare differences of the dispersion curves and parameters for different damping ratios. This study first designed a series of containing damping formation models and use Damped modified propagator matrix for obtaining Rayleigh dispersion curve, then to invert shear wave velocities of strata by ReMi and also to compare differences of the dispersion curves and the inversion parameters for different damping ratios. Due to ReMi software neglecting damping effects in processing seismic data and inverting formation parameters resulting errors, the Damped modified propagator matrix with nonlinear waveform inversion method can improve the disadvantages. Studies have shown that the damping effects on the Rayleigh dispersion curve obtained from Damped modified propagator matrix has obvious differences from the damping ratio over 5% to the undamped case, especially greater impact in the high frequency region which usually affects the parameters of low-velocity layers, and in the inversion parts also displayed the damping greater impact on shallow layers of formation, but less on deep layers. The nonlinear waveform inversion method has also verified the parameters of strata almost recovered to the original assumed model, so the degree of convergence and accuracy is high and then applied to the practical seismic data can obtain parameters of the pressure wave velocity, shear wave velocity and damping ratio etc. and also with good results.

Long-distance dispersal of Rumex alpinus was studied in the Giant Mountain in the National Park. The invasion of R. alpinus is there kind of problem. The work builds on a thesis from year 2007 (20007 Červenková), in which was made the model of the invasion of R. alpinus in the area of the Giant Mountain. The measurements of the seeds spread take place at four localities, three of them were for measuring of water dispersal and one was for measuring of winter dispersal. Anemochory was measured using traps in the meadow up to a distance of 50 m. The seeds were dispersed by wind to a distance of 20 meters. Hydrochory was measured using a network's traps in the streams up to 100 m. The largest measured water dispersal was 100 m. Hydrochory therefore proved to be an important factor, which influenced the invasion of R. alpinus. The storms and flood had the great influence on the hydrochory and anemochory. The prediction exponential curves were compiled from the data about the wind dispersal. The curves express the spread to more than a measured distance. The field dispersion curves were compared with theoretical curves, which were used in the model of the invasion from 2007. Concrete structures strengthened by steel plate have been used for more than a decade. As full bonding between the steel and matrix concrete is essential for effectively transmitting loading, infilling must be fully filled inside the gap between steel plate and concrete. The defects which are enclosed inside the steel plate may not be observed by visual observation. Present research is a preliminary study on using the dispersive characteristics of the Lamb wave modes traveling within the steel layer to assess the bonding condition between steel plate and substrates. The advantage of the technique is the capability on investigating large range of the interfacial condition with fast speed. The dispersive curves are obtained by analyzing the surface waves recorded by one receiver and generated by one impact source. In present study, numerical models were constructed to simulate an impact applying on the surface of a steel plate. The spectrogram contains image of the numerical dispersion curves were obtained from the dynamic responses of the receiver. These images were compared with the theoretical solution obtained from a software DISPERSE. The numerical models include steel plate and steel-concrete bi-layered plate. Numerical results show that the most suitable parameters for obtaining the best image are 3 μs for impact-duration, and 40.05 to 50.05 cm for the impact-receiver instance. The high-amplitude images corresponding to A0, S0 and A1 theoretical modal dispersion curves of the steel plate can be found. In addition, numerical images corresponding to steel-concrete composite plate show that the high-amplitude image close to the dispersive curve of fundamental antisymatric mode(A0) of the steel plate becomes lower in slowness. The images of S0, A1 and A0 at lower frequency range cannot be found.

Abstract:
For successful identification of structural defects in plates and pipes, it is essential to understand structural wave propagation characteristics such as dispersion relations. Analytical approaches to identify the dispersion relations of homogeneous, simple plates and circular pipes have been investigated by many researchers. However, for plates or pipes with irregular cross-sectional configurations or multi-layered composite structures, it is almost impossible to obtain the analytical dispersion relations and associated mode shapes. In addition, full numerical modeling approaches such as finite element (FE) methods are not economically feasible for high (e.g., ultrasonic) frequency analyses where an extremely large number of discretized meshes are required, resulting in significantly expensive computation. In order to address these limitations, Hybrid Analytical/Finite Element Methods (HAFEMs) are developed to model composite plates and pipes in a computationally-efficient manner. When a pipe system is used to transport a fluid, the dispersion curves obtained from a “hollow” pipe model can mislead non-destructive evaluation (NDE) results of the pipe system. In this study, the HAFEM procedure with solid elements is extended by developing fluid elements and solid-fluid boundary conditions, resulting in the dispersion curves of fluid-filled pipes. In addition, a HAFEM-based acoustic transfer function approach is suggested to consider a long pipe system assembled with multiple pipe sections with different cross-sections. For the validation of the proposed methods, experimental and full FE modeling results are compared to the results obtained from the HAFEM models. In order to detect structural defect locations in shell structures from defect-induced, subtle wave reflection signals and eliminate direct-excitation-induced and boundary-reflected, relatively-strong wave signals, a time-frequency MUSIC algorithm is applied to ultrasonic wave data measured by using an array of piezoelectric transducers. A normalized, structurally-damped, cylindrical 2-D steering vector is proposed to increase the spatial resolution of time-frequency MUSIC power results. A cross-shaped array is selected over a circular or linear array to further improve the spatial resolution and to avoid the mirrored virtual image effects of a linear array. Here, it is experimentally demonstrated that the proposed time-frequency MUSIC beamforming procedure can be used to identify structural defect locations on an aluminum plate by distinguishing the defect-induced waves from both the excitation-generated and boundary-reflected waves.

Ο στόχος της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής είναι διττός: η ανάπτυξη και η εφαρμογή αριθμητικών τεχνικών για την επίλυση προβλημάτων που εμπίπτουν στην περιοχή του Μη-Καταστροφικού Ελέγχου. Συγκεκριμένα αναπτύχθηκαν η Μέθοδος των Συνοριακών Στοιχείων (ΜΣΣ) και η Μέθοδος των Τοπικών Ολοκληρωτικών Εξισώσεων χωρίς Διακριτοποίηση για την αριθμητική ανάλυση στατικών και μεταβατικών προβλημάτων στο πεδίο της ελαστικότητας και της αλληλεπίδρασης ελαστικού με ακουστικό μέσο στις δύο διαστάσεις. Σημαντικό μέρος της διδακτορικής διατριβής αποτέλεσε η ανάπτυξη προγράμματος ηλεκτρονικού υπολογιστή, το οποίο επιλύει τα προβλήματα στα οποία πραγματεύεται το παρόν σύγγραμμα. Η διδακτορική διατριβή αποτελείται από τρεις ενότητες. Στην πρώτη ενότητα γίνεται πλήρης περιγραφή της απαραίτητης θεωρίας για την κάλυψη και κατανόηση των αριθμητικών ΜΣΣ αλλά και των Τοπικών Μεθόδων χωρίς Διακριτοποίηση (ΤΜχΔ). Στη δεύτερη ενότητα εφαρμόζονται οι προαναφερθείσες αριθμητικές μέθοδοι για την επίλυση στατικών και δυναμικών (στο πεδίο συχνοτήτων) διδιάστατων προβλημάτων, ώστε να πιστοποιηθεί η ακρίβεια και η αξιοπιστία των εν λόγω μεθοδολογιών. Τέλος, στην τρίτη ενότητα οι αριθμητικές ΜΣΣ και ΤΜχΔ εφαρμόζονται για την επίλυση προβλημάτων κυματικής διάδοσης που εμπίπτουν στο πεδίο του Μη-Καταστροφικού Ελέγχου. Πιο συγκεκριμένα μελετήθηκε η κυματική διάδοση σε ελεύθερες επίπεδες πλάκες και σε κυλινδρικές δεξαμενές αποθήκευσης υγρών καυσίμων.
The aim of this doctoral thesis is twofold: the development and implementation of numerical techniques for solving wave propagation problems in Non-Destructive Testing applications. Particularly, the Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the Local Boyndary Integral Equation Method are developed, so as to numerically solve static and transient problems on the field of elasticity and fluid-structure interaction in two dimensions. A major part of the present research is the construction of a computer program for solving such kind of problems. This textbook consists of three sections. In the first section, a thorough description on the theory of the BEM and the Local Meshless Methods (LMM) is done. The second section is dedicated for the numerical implementation of the BEM and LMM for solving steady state and time-harmonic two dimensional elastic and acoustic problems, in order to verify the accuracy and the ability of the proposed methodologies to solve the above-mentioned problems. Finally in the third section, the wave propagation problems of traction-free plates and cylindrical fuel storage tanks is studied, from the perspective of Non-Destructive Testing. The numerical methods of BEM and LMM are implemented, as well as spectral methods are utilized, for drawing useful conclusions on the wave propagation phenomena.
