Abstract:
Published studies on the utility of toxicogenomic approaches (transcriptomics, proteomics and metabonomics) in screening for toxicological mechanisms and evaluation of dose response effects have been reviewed. The information supports the use of transcriptomics to screen for specific toxicological mechanisms for which there is an a priori hypothesis, although in some areas such as mutagenicity testing, toxicogenomics appear to have limited value for identifying mutagens. Data from such screening approaches cannot be used to exclude the possibility of toxicity. Targeted transcriptomics might be valuable for screening for specific mechanisms of toxicity considered to be irrelevant for assessing risk to humans, which would help to reduce the need for detailed testing of some chemicals. An integrated approach is suggested where data from more than one toxicogenomic approach could be used as an adjunct to conventional toxicology to assess dose-response in toxicological tests. An outline preliminary proposal for use by regulators is suggested although it is noted that more data are required before this could be formally used in a decision-making process.

Abstract:
Current-year shoots of Fraser fir [Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.] were sampled in Christmas tree plantations in western North Carolina. Needles were sampled at five positions on each shoot: 0% (proximal end), 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% (distal end). At each position, needles were collected in a tight left-hand spiral beginning on the abaxial side (bottom) and ending on the adaxial side (top). Length, width, thickness, dry weight, and projected surface area were determined for each needle. Specific area (one-sided) averaged 45 cm2·g-1 and increased from the shoot base to the tip. On individual shoots, needle dimensions were maximal at the middle (50% position). Within sample positions, needle dimensions increased from the adaxial to the abaxial side. Needle length, weight, and area differed more than width or thickness by position. Needle surface area per centimeter of shoot was relatively stable. Regression models using shoot length, diameter, needle density, and average needle length or weight yielded good estimates of total foliage area and weight.

Full text
Abstract:
Flame monitoring of industrial combustors with high-reliability sensors is essential to operation security and performance. An ion current flame sensor with a simple structure has great potential to be widely used, but a weak ion current is the critical defect to its reliability. In this study, parameters of the ion current sensor used for monitoring flames on a Bunsen burner are suggested, and a method of further improving the ion current is proposed. Effects of the parameters, including the excitation voltage, electrode area, and electrode radial and vertical positions on the ion current, were investigated. The ion current grew linearly with the excitation voltage. Given that the electrodes were in contact with the flame fronts, the ion current increased with the contact area of the cathode but independent of the contact area of the anode. The smaller electrode radial position resulted in a higher ion current. The ion current was insensitive to the anode vertical position but largely sensitive to the cathode vertical position. Based on the above ion current regularities, the sensor parameters were suggested as follows: The burner served as a cathode and the platinum wire acted as an anode. The excitation voltage, anode radial and vertical positions were 120 V, 0 mm, and 6 mm, respectively. The method of further improving the ion current by adding multiple sheet cathodes near the burner exit was proposed and verified. The results show that the ion current sensor with the suggested parameters could correctly identify the flame state, including the ignition, combustion, and extinction, and the proposed method could significantly improve the magnitude of the ion current.

Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology 38, no. 9 (September 2021): 1441–55. http://dx.doi.org/10.1175/jtech-d-20-0123.1.

Abstract:
AbstractOur unmanned aerial system (UAS) current mapping is based on optical video data of the sea surface. We use three-dimensional fast Fourier transform and least squares fitting to measure the surface waves’ phase velocities and the currents via the linear dispersion relationship. Our UAS is a low-cost off-the-shelf quadcopter with inaccurate camera position and attitude measurements, which may cause spurious currents as large as the signal. We present a novel wave-based UAS heading and position correction, improving the image rectification accuracy by a factor of ~3.5 and the current measurements’ temporal repeatability by factors of 1.8–4.8. This validation study maps the currents at high spatiotemporal resolution (5 m and 4 s) across the ~700-m-wide tidally dominated Bear Cut channel in Miami, Florida. The UAS currents are compared to flotsam tracks, obtained through automated UAS video object detection and tracking, drifter tracks, and acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements. The root-mean-square errors of the cross- and along-channel currents are better than 0.03 m s−1 for the flotsam comparison and better than 0.06 m s−1 for the drifter comparison; the latter revealed a 0.06 m s−1 along-wind bias due to wind- and wave-driven vertical current shear. UAS current mapping could be used to monitor river discharge, buoyant pollutants, or submesoscale fronts and eddies; the proposed wave-based heading and position correction enables its use in areas without ground control points.

Abstract:
While the current account balance for the euro area as a whole has been in balance, divergences in current account positions among the euro-area members have widened since the introduction of the common currency euro. During the last 13 years Portugal, Greece and Spain have run large and persistent current account deficits, whereas Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Finland or Germany have displayed during the same period large and persistent surpluses. However, there is no unambiguous agreement among economists, whether this divergence of current account positions of the euro-area countries mirrors growing intra-euro-area imbalances (Gros, 2012) or just reflects proper functioning of the European integration process (Schmitz and von Hagen, 2009). Therefore, the aim of this paper is to estimate equilibrium current account position for each of the original 12 euro area countries so that it is possible to assess whether the divergence of intra-euro current account balances could be explained on the basis of economic fundamentals or it just reflects misallocation of resources and thus macroeconomic imbalances. The equilibrium current account balance is estimated using a panel-econometric technique for a sample of 30 industrial countries, which represent euro-area member states and their main business partners, over the period 1993–2011. Economic fundamentals affecting the equilibrium current account position are selected on the basis of the saving-investment balance, the trade balance and the net income balance, to ensure that we take into an account all theoretically important explanatory variables. We find that the main determinants of current account norms in our sample are fiscal balance, a country’s net international investment position, oil balance and a country’s stage of economic development. The major part of the euro-area countries exhibits current account positions close to their equilibrium levels with the exception of the Netherlands and Finland which have persistently higher surpluses, while Portugal and Greece run larger current account deficits than is their norm.

Full text
Abstract:
This manuscript presents a hybrid study of a comprehensive review and a systematic (research) analysis. Myoelectric control is the cornerstone of many assistive technologies used in clinical practice, such as prosthetics and orthoses, and human-computer interaction, such as virtual reality control. Although the classification accuracy of such devices exceeds 90% in a controlled laboratory setting, myoelectric devices still face challenges in robustness to variability of daily living conditions. The intrinsic physiological mechanisms limiting practical implementations of myoelectric devices were explored: the limb position effect and the contraction intensity effect. The degradation of electromyography (EMG) pattern recognition in the presence of these factors was demonstrated on six datasets, where classification performance was 13% and 20% lower than the controlled setting for the limb position and contraction intensity effect, respectively. The experimental designs of limb position and contraction intensity literature were surveyed. Current state-of-the-art training strategies and robust algorithms for both effects were compiled and presented. Recommendations for future limb position effect studies include: the collection protocol providing exemplars of at least 6 positions (four limb positions and three forearm orientations), three-dimensional space experimental designs, transfer learning approaches, and multi-modal sensor configurations. Recommendations for future contraction intensity effect studies include: the collection of dynamic contractions, nonlinear complexity features, and proportional control.

Abstract:
Aims and methodWe report an audit of the provision of psychiatric postgraduate education within the foundation programme and psychiatry specialty programmes in the UK. Our primary measure was the number of foundation posts in psychiatry. Our audit standard was that all foundation doctors should receive programmed training in psychiatry via a psychiatry foundation post.ResultsWe found a total of 413 foundation posts in psychiatry in 21 out of 22 foundation schools in England. This figure is only a fifth of that required to meet the audit standard. There is training capacity for 500 core trainees and 460 higher trainees in psychiatry per year. Currently, 13.6% of specialists other than general practitioners on the General Medical Council registers are psychiatrists.Clinical implicationsThe provision of programmed postgraduate training in psychiatry in UK foundation schools is inadequate. The training needs of all doctors, the mental healthcare needs of all patients, and recruitment to psychiatry are all likely to suffer as a consequence.
