Abstract:
Purpose: To investigate Curcuma longa Linn against neuronal damage induced by exposure to sevoflurane during surgical procedures. Methods: A sealed box made of transparent glass was used for anaesthetic exposure of neurons. The neurons were exposed to Curcuma longa Linn at doses of 1.5, 3, 6 and 12 μM prior to viability assessment using MTT assay. The effect of Curcuma longa Linn treatment on protein expression was determined using western blotting. Results: Sevoflurane exposure led to significant and time-dependent reductions in neuronal proliferation, when compared to unexposed cells (p < 0.05). Curcuma longa Linn at doses of 1.5, 3, 6 and 12 μM significantly decreased sevoflurane-mediated neuronal apoptosis. It reduced cleaved caspase-3 and Bax levels in neurons. However, the Curcuma longa Linn-mediated inhibition of sevoflurane-induced neuronal apoptosis was significantly suppressed by VPC23019 (p < 0.05). The p- ERK1/2 level was dose-dependently up-regulated in neurons exposed to sevoflurane on treatment with Curcuma longa Linn. Moreover, VPC23019 reversed the upregulatory effect of Curcuma longa Linn on p-ERK1/2 expression in sevoflurane-exposed neurons (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Curcuma longa Linn reversed sevoflurane-induced neuronal apoptosis by elevating p- ERK1/2 expression. Therefore, Curcuma longa Linn exerts inhibitory effect on anaesthesia-induced apoptosis in neurons, and may be useful for the treatment of this condition.

Abstract:
Background: Curcuma longa Linn. (Zingiberaceae family) plant or turmeric is known to possess pharmacological properties at relatively nontoxic doses. The study was carried out with the aim to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of C. longa L.Methods: Ethanolic rhizome extract was applied against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi using disc and well diffusion methods. Antioxidant of C. longa L. was determined by measuring 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. Results: The ethanolic extract of rhizomes showed inhibitory activity against Gram-positive S. aureus bacteria, whereas the Gram-negative S. typhi bacteria were resistant toward the ethanol extract. Zone of inhibitions against S. aureus were 7 mm and 11 mm by disc and well method, respectively. For antioxidant activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extract of C. longa L. was set against butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). It was shown that the value of half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of rhizome extract was higher than standard control. The dose response curve was utilized to determine the half maximal IC50 value for each sample. The IC50 of rhizome extract is 21.25 µg/ml, while the value IC50 for BHT is 12.42 µg/ml.Conclusions: The finding suggested turmeric rhizome-extract as a good candidate in the search for a natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agent.

Abstract:
Aim: To incorporate standardized Curcuma longa Linn extract into phytosomes and evaluate for in vitro anti-inflammatory and BSL bioassay. Method: The quality of the plant material was determined by various pharmacognostic parameters. The plant material was then subjected to maceration for extraction using ethanol: water as solvent followed by Soxhlet extraction. The resulting extract was subjected to phytochemical analysis to determine the presence of plant metabolites. The drug and excipients compatibility was evaluated by FTIR study. Furthermore, using the thin film hydration approach, a new lipid-based phytosome was prepared. In vitro anti-inflammatory and brine shrimp lethality tests were performed on prepared phytosome. Results: Moisture content, total ash, acid insoluble ash, water soluble ash values, aqueous, alcohol, and petroleum ether extractive values are all found to be within limits. The phytochemical analysis validated the existence of alkaloids, tannins, resins, carbohydrates, proteins, flavonoids, and saponins. The compatibility study demonstrates the compatibility of excipients with drugs. Thin film hydration technique was employed successfully to prepare the phytosomes containing Curcuma longa linn extract. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity revealed that prepared phytosome could serve as natural based therapeutic option for anti-inflammatory potential. Brine shrimp lethality assay also confirmed the bioactivity of prepared phytosomes. Conclusion: The method used for standardization can be used to aid with plant identification and quality analysis of Curcuma longa Linn for future research. It can be inferred from the findings that phytosomes loaded with Curcuma longa Linn extract exhibited promising anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic effects.

Abstract:
Oral candidiasis is a fungal infection that often appears on the oral mucosa. These lesions are caused by the fungus Candida albicans. Candida albicans is the most common pathogenic Candida species causing fungal infections of the oral cavity. The use of antifungal drugs is the most common way of giving, but there are many side effects that can be caused. Herbal ingredients that have antifungal effects can be alternative therapies with fewer side effects, one of which is turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.). Turmeric has various compounds that have the potential as antifungals including curcumin, flavonoids, and essential oils that work by inhibiting the growth of fungi including Candida albicans. The purpose of this literature study is to provide scientific evidence related to the potential inhibition of turmeric extract (Curcuma longa Linn.) against Candida albicans. This writing is a literature study made based on reference sources or references obtained from journals accessed through the databases of Google Scholar, Hindawi, PubMed, Scopus, DOAJ, Research Gate and textbooks. The results of the study stated that turmeric extract had an inhibitory effect on the growth of Candida albicans, the greater the concentration of turmeric extract used, the greater the inhibition caused. Turmeric also has fewer side effects than antifungal drugs.

Abstract:
These reviews suggest that in the Indian subcontinent, turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn) is widely grown and consumed as a spice. Traditional medicine has used turmeric to treat a variety of ailments, such as diabetes, liver disease, and cough. Many studies have been conducted over the past decades to determine the pharmacological effects of turmeric and its derivatives. The main chemical component of turmeric, curcumin, has been shown to have pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-mutagenic, antidiabetic, and antibacterial properties., protect liver, expectorant and anti-cancer. Turmeric, also known as Curcuma longa L. (root and rhizome), is a plant of high medicinal and commercial value, mainly used as a spice and food supplement around the world. The three curcuminoids - curcumin (diferuloylmethane, the main ingredient that gives turmeric its yellow color), demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin - are the main active ingredients of turmeric. Volatile oils (zingiberene, atlantone, tomerol, etc.) also have pharmacological effects. In addition, turmeric contains proteins, resins and carbohydrates. Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant and has significant anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties may be directly related to its anti-cancer properties. In this review, the anticancer properties of Turmeric have been reviewed.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Curcumin is a polyphenol compound extracted from the rhizome of Curcuma longa Linn (family Zingiberaceae) commonly used as a spice to color and flavor food. Several preclinical studies have suggested beneficial roles for curcumin as an adjuvant therapy in free radical-based diseases, mainly neurodegenerative disorders. Indeed, curcumin belongs to the family of hormetins and the enhancement of the cell stress response, mainly the heme oxygenase-1 system, is actually considered the common denominator for this dual response. However, evidence-based medicine has clearly demonstrated the lack of any therapeutic effect of curcumin to contrast the onset or progression of neurodegeneration and related diseases. Finally, the curcumin safety profile imposes a careful analysis of the risk/benefit balance prior to proposing chronic supplementation with curcumin.

Abstract:
Objective: The current study was carried out to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of the rhizome extract of Curcuma longa as an alternative source of effective remedies for nematodiasis. Methods: The anthelmintic activity of the C. longa was assessed in vitro against Haemonchus spp., a gastrointestinal (abomasum) parasite of goats. Different concentrations of the extracts (1 mg/mL, 2.5 mg/mL, 5 mg/mL, and 10 mg/mL) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) were tested, and the results expressed in terms of time of paralysis (minute) and time of death (minute) of the worms. Albendazole (1 mg/mL) was used as a reference (positive control) and PBS as a control group (negative control). Results: The qualitative phytochemical analysis of the methanolic extract (ME) of the plant disclosed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, terpenoids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenol, anthraquinone, and carbohydrates; whereas, the aqueous extract (AE) showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrate, flavonoids, and saponins. Both ME and AE of the C. longa (rhizome) expressed significant efficacy (p≤0.05) in causing paralysis as well as the death of the worms within 12 h of exposure at all tested concentrations, as compared to the negative control. The rhizome extracts of C. longa showed dose-dependent efficacy in causing paralysis of the worm motility and the final progression to death. The results showed that the ME at 10 mg/mL was significantly more potent (p≤0.05) over the AE.Conclusions: This study concluded that the rhizome extract of C. longa exhibited potent anthelmintic efficacy against the nematode parasite, Haemonchus spp.

Abstract:
Curcumin is a natural polyphenol component of Curcuma longa Linn, which is currently considered one of the most effective nutritional antioxidants for counteracting free radical-related diseases. Several experimental data have highlighted the pleiotropic neuroprotective effects of curcumin, due to its activity in multiple antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways involved in neurodegeneration. Although its poor systemic bioavailability after oral administration and low plasma concentrations represent restrictive factors for curcumin therapeutic efficacy, innovative delivery formulations have been developed in order to overwhelm these limitations. This review provides a summary of the main findings involving the heme oxygenase/biliverdin reductase system as a valid target in mediating the potential neuroprotective properties of curcumin. Furthermore, pharmacokinetic properties and concerns about curcumin’s safety profile have been addressed.
