POZZI, STEFANO. "Search for double-beta decay of 130Te to the excited states of 130Xe in CUORE-0." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/158137.
Full textCUORE-0 was a bolometric experiment, operated between 2013 and 2015, whose main scientific goal was the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0vbb) in 130Te. The detector consisted of 52 TeO2 crystals, used both as a detector and a source for the isotope under investigation. The crystals were arranged in a single tower and contained in a cryostat capable of reaching the temperature of 10 mK. Thanks to the low background of the experiment, searches for rare events other than 0vbb are possible. In this thesis I describe the methods used to search for double-beta decay of 130Te on the excited states of 130Xe. This decay is characterized by the emission of two electrons followed by a photon cascade, giving it a very characteristic signature. I studied two distinct processes, the SM-allowed two neutrino double-beta decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay on the excited states. In order to properly detect the signatures of these decays a dedicated optimization of the analysis procedure, involving both real and simulated data, was required. The two decays are not observed in CUORE-0, but a lower limit on the half-life of both processes can be set: for the neutrinoless decay, T1/2 > 5.44x10^23 yr, and for the two neutrino decay T1/2 > 1.85x10^23. The result from the two neutrino channel from CUORE-0 was a clear improvement over the previously existing half-life limit, set by the Cuoricino experiment at 1.30x#10^23 years. The combination of the results from CUORE-0 and Cuoricino yields even better limits: T1/2 > 1.48x10^24 years for the neutrinoless channel and T1/2 > 2.19x10^23 for the two neutrino channel. These results represent the most stringent limits currently available for both processes.

Full textThis research aims to study the neuro-autonomic correlates of the impairment in social functioning, found as a core component of at least two psychiatric disorders, namely Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Schizophrenia. Whereas in the former the impairment in social functioning reflects a disturbed psychological self-organization, in the latter it seems to be most related with deficit syndrome symptoms. The polyvagal theory provides a theoretical framework to explore whether these compromised social functioning would be associated with autonomic regulation strategies that foster defensive and non-social behaviours. According to the polyvagal theory the physiological reactivity in response to environmental “challenges” depends, at the cardiac level, on three branches of the Autonomic Nervous System. These could be alternatively dominant and have consecutively developed during evolution as follow: (1) the un-myelinated vagal system, associated with cardiac slowing and “freezing” conducts, (2) the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for tachycardia and “fight or flight” responses, and (3) the myelinated vagal system, that acts in different ways according to the estimated threat in the environments and fosters adaptive social engagement. The dynamic impact of the myelinated vagal fibers on the heart is reflected by the amplitude of the Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), a naturally occurring rhythm in the cardiac cycle at approximately the frequency of spontaneous breathing. In the first study, using the Cyberball experiment, we investigated whether BPD patients display a peculiar pattern of changes in RSA after conditions of social inclusion and ostracism, compared with Healthy Controls (HC) and remitted Major Depressive Disorder patients, as a clinical control group. We found that, before the task, BPD patients showed reduced resting RSA, indicating stable difficulties in social predisposition. During the task, BPD patients responded with greater physiological arousal to any social situation and with greater feelings of ostracism after actually benign social scenarios, i.e., following social inclusion and when the ostracism experience is over. In the second study, we measured the autonomic and psychological response to Cyberball in a sample of patients with Schizophrenia, compared with HC. At baseline, we observed a reduced resting RSA, index of impaired social flexibility. During the task, the patients with Schizophrenia showed a blunted perception of threat and did not report aggressive tendencies, compared to HC, in response to the condition of ostracism. In both samples, a parasympathetic withdrawal was not observed, showing that the experience of being excluded did not induce propensities toward fight/flight responding. Overall, these findings confirmed low resting RSA that was observed across a variety of trans-diagnostic psychiatric conditions. Moreover, our results suggest that phasic changes in RSA in response to social interaction could be a trait marker of BPD. Finally, in the third study, we investigated the interoception, conceptualized as the sense of the internal physiological condition of the body. The processing of afferent bodily signals has been linked to higher-order psychological functions such as the sense of self and emotions regulation. Specifically, recent evidence suggested that interoceptive processes might predict the autonomic regulation in a social setting. Interoceptive Accuracy (IA) was measured with a heart beat detection task in the aggregated sample. Our results showed a reduced IA among patients with both BPD and Schizophrenia, confirming how interoceptive processes are altered in clinical samples and should be considered as potential mediator in patients' psychosocial difficulties.

Full textPurpose: Arrythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is predominantly known as a cause of sudden death in the young, whereas the relationship with heart failure (HF) has been scarcely investigated. We aimed this study to evaluate prevalence, incidence, pathophysiology and morphologic basis of ARVC leading to severe HF. Methods: We retrospectively analysed 64 patients with ARVC evaluated at a single referral centre. We compared the clinical and instrumental findings of ARVC patients with/without severe HF (NYHA III-IV) at first evaluation or during follow up. We analysed the explanted hearts of patients who underwent heart transplantation in two referral centre, Bologna and Padua University. Results: Severe HF was present in 9 patients at presentation (prevalence=14%) and occurred in 10 during follow up (incidence=2.3% person-years). Sixteen patients (23%) required heart transplantation. Patients with advanced HF were younger at symptom onset (46±16 versus 37±12 years, p=0.04); right ventricle (RV) was larger and more hypokinetic at echocardiography (RVOT 41±6 versus 37±7 mm, p=0.03; RV end diastolic diameter 38±11 versus 28±8 mm, p=0.0001; fractional shortening area 23%±7 versus 32%±11, p= 0.002). Left ventricle (LV) was slightly more dilated (75±29 ml/m2 versus 60±19, p= 0.0017) and globally hypokinetic (Ejection Fraction = 35%±14 versus 57%±12, p= 0.001). The hemodynamic profile of patients who underwent cardiac transplantation showed low cardiac index (1.8±0.2 l//min/m2) with nearly normal capillary wedge and pulmonary pressure (12±8 mmHg and 26±10 mmHg). A detailed histological analysis of 36 explanted hearts showed extensive fibro-fatty infiltration of the RV and isolated or confluent areas of LV fibrosis. Conclusions: In ARVC, HF can be the only symptom at presentation and leads to heart transplantation in a relevant subset of patients. Patients who develop advanced HF are younger, have more severe RV involvement associated with slight dilation and global hypokinesia of the LV, due to fibrotic infiltration.

Full textCUORE is the first tonne-scale experiment searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay with TeO₂ bolometers. The discovery of this nuclear transitionwould have decisive consequences on the present physics scene. The following questions would find an answer: why is matter dominant in the Universe? which is the neutrino mass? has the neutrino a Majorana or a Dirac nature? This work presents two different approaches for the enhancement of the CUORE sensitivity with a view to its upgrade: the CUPID experiment. In the first part, a study of the thermal model describing NTD-based bolometers is presented with the objective to achieve a better comprehension of the response of the CUORE detectors. Bolometers are amazing detectors used for a large number of applications because of their impressive high performance, but their modelisation and simulation is far to be completely understood. Two measurements have been performed for an experimental evaluation of two thermal-model parameters: the glue and the electron-phonon conductances. In the second part, the possibility to detect the tiny Cherenkov light emitted by TeO₂ to reject alpha events — the main background of the CUORE experiment — is studied. The challenge consists in the detection of a 100-eV light signal with a NTD-based light detector that usually is characterised by a baseline noise of the order of 100 eV. This issue is solved with the employment of the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke (NTL) effect to lower the energy threshold of the light detector and improve its signal-to-noise ratio. This effect exploits the presence of an electric field to amplify bolometric thermal signals. The full rejection of the alpha background has been proved with one NTL assisted photo-bolometer coupled to a CUORE-size TeO₂ bolometer. A convincing solution for the alpha background rejection has been demonstrated with a view to the CUPID experiment

Full textThis research has a dyadic approach involving both patients with cardiovascular disease and their partner during the hospitalization. The first study investigates the effect of dyadic coping (DC) on partners’ marital satisfaction considering the moderating effect of the partners’ psychological distress. The results show that the beneficial effect of positive and common DC on marital satisfaction occurs when the partners’ psychological distress is low, on the contrary negative DC decreases marital satisfaction among those who have high levels of psychological distress. The second study aims to investigate the relationship between DC, adherence to medications and patient activation. The relationship is mediated by the patient health self-efficacy: positive and common DC increase patient health self-efficacy which in turn increases adherence to medication and patient activation; on the contrary, the negative DC is detrimental during hospitalization and also over time after discharge. The third study investigates the relationship between psychological distress and the quality of partner support (overprotection, hostility and support for patient engagement) through the moderating role of DC. The results show that high psychological distress increases worse partner support among those with low levels of positive DC and high negative DC.

Full textIschemic heart diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in western nations. Defects in myocardial Ca2+ transport system with cytosolic Ca2+ overload is a major contributor to myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is well known to confer cardioprotection against myocardial I/R injury attenuating the cytosolic Ca2+ overload. One of the key players for the maintenance of [Ca2+]i homeostasis in the heart is the sodium/calcium exchanger 1 (NCX1). During IR, NCX induces Ca2+ influx, which strengthens Ca2+ overload. SN-6, a benzyloxyphenyl derivative and proposed selective NCX1 inhibitor, could be used to prevent I/R injury. The present study aimed at evaluating the potential role of NCX1 during ischemic preconditioning in isolated rat ventricular myocyctes, hearts and in a cellular cell line model (H9c2 wilde-type and a stable transfected with NCX1. In all the models the I/R was observed an increased cell toxicity and the SN6 was able to revert this effect. Subseqyently, isolated rat ventricular myocytes and whole hearts were subjected to PI/R. the results obtained suggests that the exposure to PC before I/R improved cell viability and reduced is-chemic areas. The inhibition of the reverse mode of the NCX1 by SN-6 during PC abolished the cardioprotection observed in I/R alone. Furthemore, in isolated rat ventricular myocytes and whole hearts, was observed that PC and I/R alone were able to induce an increased protein levels of NCX1. This effect was completely reverted by SN6. The exposure to PC before I/R induced NCX1 protein levels greater than PC and I/R alone. The presences of SN6, in whole hearts, reverted this effect. In conclusion, the present thesis sug-gests that NCX1 may play an important role in PC reducing the cell toxicity induced by I/R.

Full textThe present limitation for experiments searching for rare events, such as WIMPs interactions and neutrinoless double beta decay (0vBB), is the radioactive background. In particular, near-surface events are the main problem for very sensitive searches based on the bolometric technique, such as EDELWEISS and CUORE. In this work, two techniques have been studied and developed for the active suppression of the surface background. The first approach, pioneered by the EDELWEISS collaboration, concerns the identification of surface events in Ge bolometers (for Dark Matter search) or TeO2 bolometers (for 0vBB search of 130Te) equipped with NbSi thin film thermometers acting as out-of-equilibrium phonons sensor. The second approach, for the moment applied only to TeO2 bolometers in the framework of the CUORE collaboration, consists in the realization of surface-sensitive composite bolometers in which thin auxiliary detectors act as active shields which reveal and identify surface-generated charge particles. In both cases, even if the physical mechanism is different, pulse shape analysis enables an effective rejection procedure. Finally, a further technique has been analysed which has the potential to recognize alpha particles against gamma or beta interactions. The idea is to realize a scintillating bolometer in which the comparison between the heat and the light signal for the same event allows to reject alpha particles, which emit less light than beta/gamma interactions with the same energy. In particular, the attempt to make TeO2 crystals reasonably good scintillators by proper doping is described and analysed

[a cura dell'autore]
The purpose of this work is to study the mechanical vibrations field in two natural physical systems: vocal tract and heart. The mechanical vibrations associated with trachea and larynx when Italian vowels are emitted are investigated by using two laser Doppler vibrometers and compared with the acoustic ones. An upward propagation of the mechanical vibrations is observed for which it is possible to estimate a delay between the traces: the mechanical oscillations at the trachea start before the larynx and the acoustic oscillations. These tracheal oscillations are self-oscillations in time and are associated with the pitch production, indicating a further hydrodynamic instability at trachea. This leads to new insights in the mechanism controlling the pitch in the speech. We show that acoustical and mechanical vibration fields can be decomposed in two Landau modes which are limit cycles. The evidenced features of nonlinearity suggest a new phenomenological model of vocal tract. In this model the trachea plays an important role for in the generation of vowel sounds and contains information on the frequency of pitch. An alternative technique is suggested to monitor the proper functioning of the heart. The mechanical vibration associated with the heart are investigated by using two laser Doppler vibrometers. We show that the Hilbert transform of the recorded signal with the two vibrometers is the envelope of the electrocardiographic signal. This technique can provide an innovative and valuable diagnostic tool in the field of cardiology. [edited by author]

Full textSingle ventricle patients are treated with total cavo-pulmonary connection (TCPC) operation that, for the particular hemodynamic condition, can cause a multiorgan damage. Aim of the research is to evaluate the amount of this damage at a medium-long term follow-up. One hundred fifteen patients, operated in the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Department of Bologna (52 pts) and Torino (63 pts), were enrolled. Mean follow-up was 125±2 months. Patients underwent hemodynamic evaluation (88 pts), cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) (75 pts) and Fibroscan and hepatic echography (47 pts). Mean pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) was 11.5±2.6mmHg, and in 12 patients was more than 15mmHg. Mean atrial pressure was 6.7±2.3 mmHg and mean pulmonary vascular resistances (PVR) was 2±0.99 WU/m2. In 29 patients, PVR were more than 2 WU/m2. Mean peak VO2 was 28±31 ml/Kg/min, 58±15 % of the theoretic value. Mean peak heart rate during exercise was 151±22 bpm, 74±17% of the theoretic value. Mean hepatic stiffness evaluation at Fibroscan was 17.01 kPa (8-34.3 kPa). Five patients were in Metavir class F2, 9 in F3 e 33 in F4 class. Among patients with a longer than 10 years follow-up, hepatic stiffness evaluation was significantly higher (19.6±5.2 kPa) than in patients with shorter follow-up (15.1±5.8 kPa, p<0.01). Peak heart rate at CPET was significantly related to single ventricle morphology, resulting 67.8±14.4% of the theoretic value in right single ventricle patients and 79.6±8.7% in left single ventricle patients (p=0.006). TCPC operation cause a multiorgan damage proportional to follow-up length, and for this reason deserve a constant multidisciplinary clinico-instrumental monitoring.

Full textThis research provides the critical edition of over four hundred letters sent by the countess Margherita Trivulzio to her son, Cardinal Federico Borromeo, between 1586-1601. The study of this nucleus of letters allows one not only to shed new light on the figure of Borromeo, analysing his family relationships, but allows a particular focus on a personality, who has so far remained little known and yet worthy of being discovered: that of the noble Trivulzio. Starting from the study of the examined epistles, the following analysis aims to reconstruct the biographical profile, the religious background and the cultural importance of the countess – the latter being investigated as well in terms of linguistic analysis – while at the same time it offers a possible itinerary of reading the numerous letters addressed to the famous founder of the Ambrosian Library of Milan.
