TeO2 bolometers have been used for many years to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in [Formula: see text]Te. CUORE, a tonne-scale TeO2 detector array, recently published the most sensitive limit on the half-life, [Formula: see text] yr, which corresponds to an upper bound of 140–400 meV on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino. While it makes CUORE a world-leading experiment looking for neutrinoless double beta decay, it is not the only study that CUORE will contribute to in the field of nuclear and particle physics. As already done over the years with many small-scale experiments, CUORE will investigate both rare decays (such as the two-neutrino double beta decay of [Formula: see text]Te and the hypothesized electron capture in [Formula: see text]Te), and rare processes (e.g. dark matter and axion interactions). This paper describes some of the achievements of past experiments that used TeO2 bolometers, and perspectives for CUORE.

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay of <sup>130</sup>Te, a rare nuclear process that, if observed, would demonstrate the Majorana nature of the neutrino and enable measurements of the effective Majorana mass. The CUORE setup consists of an array of 988 tellurium dioxide crystals, operated as bolometers, with a total mass of about 200 kg of <sup>130</sup>Te. The experiment is under construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. As a first step towards CUORE, the first tower (CUORE-0) has been assembled and will soon be in operation.

Questo articolo affronta il tema del campo originario dell'esperienza umana. Si tratta di esperienze che precedono il nascere delle immagini e in cui ancora non esiste differenziazione tra opposti, né tra soggetto e oggetto. L'Autrice, che muove le sue formulazioni a partire dalla sua esperienza clinica, sostiene che prima che le immagini possano essere esperite, il soggetto deve scoprire i suoi limiti. L'articolo mette a fuoco le caratteristiche che un lavoro analitico deve avere per permettere all'immagine di emergere. Innanzi tutto l'analista deve sostenere la percezione dell'esperienza del paziente senza etichettarla in modo affrettato. Il paziente attraverso il transfert puň manifestare il proprio modo di funzionare in una relazione significativa di cui ci si puň fidare. L'analisi č di conseguenza il vivere nella propria carne il dramma o l'esperienza dell'altro, altrimenti non potrŕ esservi trasformazione e quindi cura.

Abstract:
CUORE-0 è stato un esperimento bolometrico, mantenuto in funzione dal 2013 al 2015, il cui scopo scientifico principale è stata la ricerca del decadimento doppio beta senza emissione di neutrini (0vbb) nel 130Te. Il rivelatore era costituito da 52 cristalli di TeO2, usati sia come rivelatore che come sorgente dell'isotopo di interesse. I cristalli erano organizzati in una singola torre e contenuti in un criostato capace di raggiungere la temperatura di 10 mK. Grazie al basso fondo radioattivo raggiunto dall'esperimento, la ricerca di altri processi rari, oltre al decadimento doppio beta senza emissione di neutrini, è stata possibile. In questa tesi descrivo i metodi che ho usato per la ricerca del decadimento doppio beta del 130Te sugli stati eccitati del 130Xe. Questo decadimento è caratterizzato dall'emissione di due elettroni, seguiti da una cascata di fotoni, dandogli una segnatura chiaramente identificabile. Ho studiato due processi distinti, il decadimento con l'emissione di due neutrino, permesso dal Modello Standard, e il decadimento senza emissione di neutrini. Per poter identificare chiaramente la segnatura di questi decadimenti è stato necessario ottimizzare una procedura di analisi dedicata, che ha richiesto l'uso sia di dati reali che simulati. I due decadimenti non sono stati osservati in CUORE-0, ma è stato possibile dare un limite inferiore al relativo tempo di dimezzamento: per il decadimento senza emissione di neutrini T1/2 > 5.44x10^23 anni, mentre per il decadimento con l'emissione di due neutrini T1/2 > 1.85x10^23 anni. In particolare, il risultato per il canale con l'emissione di due neutrini rappresenta un netto miglioramento rispetto al limite preesistente, determinato dall'esperimento Cuoricino e pari a 1.30x10^23 anni. La combinazione dei risultati di CUORE-0 e Cuoricino permette di raggiungere limiti ancora migliori: T1/2 > 1.48x10^24 anni per il decadimento senza neutrini e T1/2 > 2.19x10^23 anni per il decadimento con due neutrini. Questi risultati rappresentano i limiti più stringenti disponibili al momento per entrambi i processi.
CUORE-0 was a bolometric experiment, operated between 2013 and 2015, whose main scientific goal was the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0vbb) in 130Te. The detector consisted of 52 TeO2 crystals, used both as a detector and a source for the isotope under investigation. The crystals were arranged in a single tower and contained in a cryostat capable of reaching the temperature of 10 mK. Thanks to the low background of the experiment, searches for rare events other than 0vbb are possible. In this thesis I describe the methods used to search for double-beta decay of 130Te on the excited states of 130Xe. This decay is characterized by the emission of two electrons followed by a photon cascade, giving it a very characteristic signature. I studied two distinct processes, the SM-allowed two neutrino double-beta decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay on the excited states. In order to properly detect the signatures of these decays a dedicated optimization of the analysis procedure, involving both real and simulated data, was required. The two decays are not observed in CUORE-0, but a lower limit on the half-life of both processes can be set: for the neutrinoless decay, T1/2 > 5.44x10^23 yr, and for the two neutrino decay T1/2 > 1.85x10^23. The result from the two neutrino channel from CUORE-0 was a clear improvement over the previously existing half-life limit, set by the Cuoricino experiment at 1.30x#10^23 years. The combination of the results from CUORE-0 and Cuoricino yields even better limits: T1/2 > 1.48x10^24 years for the neutrinoless channel and T1/2 > 2.19x10^23 for the two neutrino channel. These results represent the most stringent limits currently available for both processes.

Questa tesi propone una traduzione di un breve racconto dell'autrice cinese Zhang Ailing, ancora inedito in Italia, intitolato in lingua originale 心经 (Pinyin: Xīnjīng), ovvero “Sutra del cuore”, pubblicato in Cina nel 1943. Lo stile letterario unico ed elegante attraverso cui la scrittrice ha saputo far assaporare ai lettori i gusti, gli odori e i colori dell'Oriente sempre affiancati a qualche dettaglio occidentale, sono i motivi principali che mi hanno portato a scegliere di tradurre Zhang Ailing. Oltre alla traduzione del racconto, la tesi propone anche un approfondimento sulla vita e sulle opere della scrittrice concludendosi con un commento traduttologico volto a spiegare al lettore le varie scelte e strategie adottate per la stesura del testo, cercando di far vedere e toccare con mano il racconto attraverso gli occhi dell'autrice. "Sutra del Cuore" narra la storia di toccanti relazioni umane all' interno di un contesto familare solo apparentemente perfetto, influenzato da etica e morale, emozioni e desideri dei personaggi. La protagonista è Xu Xiao Han, una giovane ragazza di vent'anni bella, intelligente e arrogante, illuminata dalla passione e dalla pazzia. Il racconto si concentra maggiormente sulla relazione combattuta tra amore e odio tra lei e il padre di cui è innamorata. Zhang Ailing descrive con estrema sensibilità i sentimenti contrastanti della ragazza culminando poi in un' ascesa simbolica allo stesso tempo rappresentativa dell' inizio di una nuova era per la Cina.

In Turchia il settore privato sta rivestendo sempre più un ruolo attivo nel campo dell’arte e della cultura. Basti pensare alla città di Istanbul, che soprattutto negli ultimi anni ha assistito, grazie alla ripresa economica e al boom dell’industria turistica, all’apertura di nuovi spazi e location destinate ad organizzazioni culturali e gallerie. La voglia di mettersi in gioco nel panorama contemporaneo e la curiosità di sperimentare nuovi media e tecnologie, per dar vita ad un dialogo con la comunità artistica internazionale, sono stati due elementi di forte motivazione che hanno portato ad intraprendere percorsi volti ad un differente approccio alla cultura in Turchia. In un paese caratterizzato da un immenso e prezioso patrimonio storico culturale, lo Stato ha spesso trascurato e dato poco peso all’esuberante ed effervescente creatività dei giovani artisti locali. Dopo aver avuto l’opportunità di trascorrere due mesi ad Istanbul grazie ad una borsa di studio elargita dalla Venice International University ed avere vissuto in prima persona il fervore artistico che si respira in questa città, ho voluto dedicare la mia ricerca ad una realtà che mi ha colpito sin dall’inizio: il SALT. Questa piattaforma culturale, le cui molteplici attività vengono ospitate in due sedi che prendono il nome dal distretto in cui si trovano, rispettivamente il SALT Beyoğlu e Galata, è nata ufficialmente nel 2010 ma altro non è che il frutto di un’indagine artistica cominciata nel 2001 e portata avanti fino ad oggi. Ritengo che il SALT sia un singolare e fortunato esempio di quanto i finanziamenti privati di una banca, in questo caso GARANTI BANK, siano stati fondamentali per alimentare un discorso artistico inserito in un contesto no-profit che stimoli e attiri la comunità locale a discutere di temi culturali, grazie a frequenti workshop e conferenze, e a confrontarsi con realtà internazionali tramite esposizioni e mostre.

Il cuore suggerisce nella filosofia, nella lettura proposta, il tema della "conciliazione". Il tema del cuore infatti mostra non tanto o non solo una opposizione con la ragione, ma un accrescimento della ragione stessa, ovvero un recupero di quella dimensione patica che il razionalismo moderno tende a mettere da parte.

Abstract:
Questa ricerca si propone di studiare i correlati neuro-autonomici delle alterazioni del funzionamento sociale che caratterizzano il Disturbo Borderline di Personalità (DBP) e la Schizofrenia. Nel DBP tali difficoltà riflettono un’organizzazione disfunzionale del sé; nella Schizofrenia, invece, sembrano dipendere dalla sintomatologia difettuale. La teoria polivagale fornisce una cornice teorica per comprendere se tali alterazioni si associno a strategie di regolazione autonomica che favoriscono comportamenti difensivi. Secondo la teoria polivagale, la reattività alle “sfide” ambientali dipende, a livello cardiaco, da tre branche del Sistema Nervoso Autonomo, sviluppate consecutivamente nel corso dell’evoluzione, alternativamente attivabili: (1) il sistema vagale non mielinizzato, responsabile della riduzione della frequenza cardiaca e di comportamenti di immobilizzazione, (2) il sistema nervoso simpatico, che determina tachicardia e risposte di “attacco-fuga”, e (3) il sistema vagale mielinizzato, che si attiva in modo flessibile in base alla presenza di minacce nell’ambiente e favorisce un coinvolgimento sociale adattivo. L’impatto dinamico delle fibre vagali mielinizzate sul cuore può essere misurato con l’Aritmia Sinusale Respiratoria (ASR), un’oscillazione spontanea del ritmo cardiaco in base agli atti respiratori. Nel primo studio, usando il paradigma sperimentale Cyberball, sono stati valutati i cambiamenti di ASR in condizioni di inclusione sociale ed ostracismo nei pazienti affetti da DBP, confrontandoli con un gruppo di Controlli Sani (CS) e con pazienti affetti da Disturbo Depressivo Maggiore Ricorrente in fase di remissione, inclusi come gruppo clinico di controllo. I pazienti affetti da DBP presentavano una ridotta ARS, indice di uno stato fisiologico che predispone a comportamenti difensivi già nell’approccio all’interazione sociale. Durante il gioco i pazienti affetti da DBP hanno presentato un’ulteriore riduzione dei livelli di ARS, che indica uno stato di allarme persistente, indipendente dal tipo di interazione, associato a maggiori sentimenti di minaccia anche in contesti sociali favorevoli. Nel secondo studio le risposte autonomiche ed emotive al gioco Cyberball sono state valutate in un gruppo di pazienti affetti da Schizofrenia, confrontandoli con un gruppo di CS. I pazienti, in condizioni di riposo, mostravano ridotti livelli di ARS, espressione di una ridotta flessibilità fisiologica in potenziali interazioni sociali. Nella condizione di ostracismo hanno riportato una minore percezione di minaccia rispetto ai CS e non hanno sviluppato tendenze aggressive verso i partecipanti da cui erano stati esclusi. In entrambi i gruppi non è stata rilevata alcuna modulazione nell’ARS, ad indicare che nel corso dell’interazione sociale il “freno vagale” ha soppresso l’attivazione di potenziali risposte di attacco/fuga. Tali risultati confermano che ridotti livelli di ARS a riposo si osservano in modo trans-diagnostico in diversi disturbi psichici. I cambiamenti in ARS in risposta all’interazione sociale sembrano essere distintivi del DBP. Il terzo studio riguarda l’enterocezione, intesa come la percezione delle sensazioni interne al corpo. Il processamento dei segnali enterocettivi è stato correlato a funzioni psicologiche superiori quali il senso di sé e la regolazione emotiva. Un recente studio ha mostrato come tali processi siano associati alla capacità di regolazione autonomica nei contesti sociali. L’Accuratezza Enterocettiva (AE) è stata misurata con il task di detenzione dei battiti cardiaci, sul campione aggregato. I risultati hanno mostrato una ridotta AE nei pazienti affetti da DBP e Schizofrenia, suggerendo un possibile effetto di mediazione dei processi enterocettivi nelle alterazioni del funzionamento sociale.
This research aims to study the neuro-autonomic correlates of the impairment in social functioning, found as a core component of at least two psychiatric disorders, namely Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Schizophrenia. Whereas in the former the impairment in social functioning reflects a disturbed psychological self-organization, in the latter it seems to be most related with deficit syndrome symptoms. The polyvagal theory provides a theoretical framework to explore whether these compromised social functioning would be associated with autonomic regulation strategies that foster defensive and non-social behaviours. According to the polyvagal theory the physiological reactivity in response to environmental “challenges” depends, at the cardiac level, on three branches of the Autonomic Nervous System. These could be alternatively dominant and have consecutively developed during evolution as follow: (1) the un-myelinated vagal system, associated with cardiac slowing and “freezing” conducts, (2) the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for tachycardia and “fight or flight” responses, and (3) the myelinated vagal system, that acts in different ways according to the estimated threat in the environments and fosters adaptive social engagement. The dynamic impact of the myelinated vagal fibers on the heart is reflected by the amplitude of the Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), a naturally occurring rhythm in the cardiac cycle at approximately the frequency of spontaneous breathing. In the first study, using the Cyberball experiment, we investigated whether BPD patients display a peculiar pattern of changes in RSA after conditions of social inclusion and ostracism, compared with Healthy Controls (HC) and remitted Major Depressive Disorder patients, as a clinical control group. We found that, before the task, BPD patients showed reduced resting RSA, indicating stable difficulties in social predisposition. During the task, BPD patients responded with greater physiological arousal to any social situation and with greater feelings of ostracism after actually benign social scenarios, i.e., following social inclusion and when the ostracism experience is over. In the second study, we measured the autonomic and psychological response to Cyberball in a sample of patients with Schizophrenia, compared with HC. At baseline, we observed a reduced resting RSA, index of impaired social flexibility. During the task, the patients with Schizophrenia showed a blunted perception of threat and did not report aggressive tendencies, compared to HC, in response to the condition of ostracism. In both samples, a parasympathetic withdrawal was not observed, showing that the experience of being excluded did not induce propensities toward fight/flight responding. Overall, these findings confirmed low resting RSA that was observed across a variety of trans-diagnostic psychiatric conditions. Moreover, our results suggest that phasic changes in RSA in response to social interaction could be a trait marker of BPD. Finally, in the third study, we investigated the interoception, conceptualized as the sense of the internal physiological condition of the body. The processing of afferent bodily signals has been linked to higher-order psychological functions such as the sense of self and emotions regulation. Specifically, recent evidence suggested that interoceptive processes might predict the autonomic regulation in a social setting. Interoceptive Accuracy (IA) was measured with a heart beat detection task in the aggregated sample. Our results showed a reduced IA among patients with both BPD and Schizophrenia, confirming how interoceptive processes are altered in clinical samples and should be considered as potential mediator in patients' psychosocial difficulties.

Abstract:
Tema della tesi è la concessione italiana fondata nella città di Tianjin all'inizio del Novecento. Dopo aver inizialmente contestualizzato dal punto di vista storico la fondazione della stessa, si passa all'analisi del suo sviluppo, rispettivamente durante gli anni della fondazione (1902-1912), durante gli anni centrali e dell'epoca fascista (1912- 1943) e durante gli anni del secondo dopoguerra e della retrocessione della stessa alla Cina (anni Quaranta). Ci si dedica poi a uno studio sulla differente immagine che della nostra concessione emerge confrontando le fonti italiane con quelle cinesi, soffermandosi in particolare su come talvolta le fonti italiane enfatizzino alcuni aspetti più del reale, o viceversa su come altre volte le fonti cinesi puntino a sminuirli o ad accentuare le caratteristiche negative. La tesi si conclude con una sezione dedicata all'attuale progetto di restauro di cui la zona della ex concessione è stata protagonista a partire dal 2004 . Tale sezione comprende una digressione iniziale sull'anniversario dei seicento anni dalla fondazione della città e sulla conseguente promulgazione del piano di conservazione del patrimonio culturale (lanciato dalla municipalità di Tianjin ed entrato in vigore nel 2005), e si concentra poi nello specifico sul restauro della zona della nostra ex concessione , che ha portato alla creazione della "New I-style town", vera e propria vetrina del Made in Italy nel cuore della Cina.

Abstract:
My PhD thesis project has been carried out within the CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment. The CUORE experiment is a ton scale cryogenic detector installed in the underground Gran Sasso laboratories of INFN (LNGS) in Italy. The CUORE detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 bolometric detectors (5 x 5 x 5 cm3 each) arranged into 19 identical structures called 'towers'. Each tower hosts 52 bolometers arranged in 13 floors, each containing 4 crystals. Each crystal has a mass of 750 g, resulting in a total mass of 742 kg of TeO2, or 206 kg of 130Te. The goal of the CUORE experiment is to investigate the 0nuBB decay of 130Te. My main activities have been related to the CUORE detector operation, characterization and optimization. Moreover I developed software tools for the CUORE data processing and analysis. In addition, I have been investigating the CUORE sensitivity to rare processes other than the 0nuBB decay, like the CPT symmetry violation in the 2nuBB decay. In the first part of my PhD thesis, I give a detailed review of the CUORE detector optimization campaigns performed in 2017. It was the first time that such a large number of bolometric detectors were simultaneously operated in a completely new and unique cryogenic system. My main contribution has been related to the analysis of the detectors performance in terms of signal optimization and noise reduction, in order to set both the optimal operating temperature of the cryogenic system and the polarization voltages (working points) for the NTDs coupled with each bolometer. In order to set the best operating conditions of the CUORE detectors, it has been necessary to characterize the response of the CUORE bolometers and NTDs. Utilizing the high number of detectors in CUORE, it was possible to study and model more features of the bolometers response and to try to develop a complete (static and dynamic) thermal model. The development of a thermal model can contribute to the identification of the physical parameters which are affecting the CUORE bolometers energy resolution and which could be possibly better optimized. The second part of the work is focused on the analysis of the CUORE data and on the study of the potential of the CUORE experiment for the search for rare events and/or for physics beyond the Standard Model other than the 0nuBB decay of 130Te. The first CUORE physics data were acquired during the summer of 2017, with a total collected 0nuBB exposure of 86.3 kg.yr of (nat)TeO2. The analysis of these data lead to the first CUORE 0nuBB half-life limit and to a more precise measurement of the 2nuBB decay half-life for 130Te. I have contributed to the analysis by developing and debugging the software for processing and analyzing the CUORE data; moreover I have worked to the evaluation of the selection efficiencies which have been used in the production of the CUORE physics results. Furthermore I studied the sensitivity of the CUORE experiment to the possible CPT symmetry violating terms. Indeed, the violation of this symmetry is described in several Standard Model Extensions (SME); in the case of isotopes which can undergo double-beta decay, the CPT violation would induce a deformation in the spectrum of the total energy of the two electrons emitted in the 2nuBB process. Utilizing the data acquired by CUORE in 2017, it was possible to set the first limit for the CPT violation evaluated from the 130Te isotope.

During my PhD I have been involved in two experiments, LHCb (at CERN) and CUORE (at LNGS). The former is devoted to search of physics beyond the Standard Model. I collaborated to characterize MaPMTs and develop the read-out electronic system. Such equipment will be used for the upgrade of the RICH detector, responsible for the particle identification. CUORE is an experiment searching the neutrinoless double beta decay in tellurium 130. I collaborated to develop and mount the electronic apparatus. The studies on the linear power supply, the slow control communication system and the ultra-precise and ultra-stable pulser board for the bolometer response stabilization, will be described.
