Abstract:
Abstract: Building on the inspirational “monthly stories” in Edmondo De Amicis’s Cuore , Francesco D’Adamo’s novels present rich resources for youth navigating through the increasingly dehumanized world. His eighteen children’s books narrate compelling and imaginative stories of heroism while avoiding the paternalistic didacticism for which De Amicis and his imitators are often critiqued. D’Adamo won the Premio Andersen Best Writer Award for children’s literature in 2023.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article provides an overview of the works of E. De Amicis published in Russian and stored in the collections of the Fundamental Library of the Herzen State Pedagogical University. Most of the publications contain certain book signs, by which you can find out the history of the existence of each copy and trace the path of their entry into the library. The books of E. De Amicis were very popular, therefore they were present in almost every library oriented to the children’s readership: libraries of state institutions (for example, the library of employees in the Ministry of Finance, the library for employees of the State Bank) and various educational institutions (schools, colleges, institutes), public children’s libraries and personal collections. Recommendations for the purchase of books by E. De Amicis for reading to children came from both official departments of the Ministry of Public Education and specialists in children’s literature as part of various indexes and on the pages of periodicals. The main attention is paid to translations and editions of the most popular story “Cuore”, as well as editions of individual stories extracted from it. Their number was difficult to name already at the beginning of the 20 th century.

Abstract:
Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis: preliminary investigations of language and its evolution The paper proposes a linguistic investigation of the first half of Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis. From the graphic, phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic point of view, a comparison is made between the printed edition from 1900 (the last published during the author’s lifetime), with the first edition from 1890 and an autographed version of the text, conserved at the L. Lagorio Civic Library in Imperia. The article frames the changes that took place within De Amicis’s theory and linguistic practise as well as in the linguistic landscape and in the grammatical and lexicographic reflection of his contemporaries. The linguistic choices of De Amicis have almost always been compared with those of Manzoni’s Quarantana: De Amicis is Manzonian, but not slavish, and with an autonomy of views in the formulation of linguistic-didactic proposals characterized by the use of contemporary Florentine which dissolves into classic Tuscan and, to a limited extent, in the use of the dialect. In Romanzo d’un maestro there is therefore a conciliatory linguistic eclecticism, also recognizable in the pages of Idioma gentile: although the Manzonian model is the preferred one, its openness towards alternative models dampens the most radical implications of the Master’s thought, in agreement with those who recognized the moderate character of De Amicis’s linguistic choices.

Abstract:
The present review analyses a recent monograph "De Amicis in Russia. The book is dedicated to the investigation of how the ideas of humanist school, expressed by the 19 th century Italian writer and educator Edmondo De Amicis, influenced the school system transformations in the pre-revolutionary and in the Soviet Russia. The review consequently puts into light the theoretical basis of the monograph (mostly, the theory of cultural transfer), its structure, the style of the author and the results of the research. The author puts the question of De Amicis’ ideas reception in a broad cultural context, thus the study offers a deep insight into the school system evolution in the czarist Russia and the Soviet state and a broad map of children book market at the end of the 19 th century. The monograph highlights a universal nature of De Amicis’ ideas which for amost a century through a number of translations and adaptations served as a source for the school system renovation in Russia in various social and political contexts.

Abstract:
The subject matter of this paper is the language and stylistics of selected fragments of „Serce” (“Heart”), a children’s novel by Edmondo de Amicisa in the 19th-century translation into Polish by Maria Konopnicka. With reference to selected translation theories, the conducted analysis covers the strategy adopted by the translator, that is one consisting in familiarising the Polish reader with foreign realities while preserving their originality and “foreignness” (i.e. the simultaneous “domestication” and “foreignisation”). This determines the faithfulness and up-to-dateness of her translation, re-editions of which have been published to this day as it is appreciated for its rich language and accurate rendition of the original style. Due to the similarity to her own writing technique, the translator appropriately refl ects the nature of the work, enriching it with elements of school jargon and colloquial language. Despite the presence of archaisms, Konopnicka’s language has remained comprehensible to the contemporary reader. Keywords: artistic language – language of translation – translation studies – Edmondo de Amicis

Abstract Starting from the most varied interpretations to which Collodi’s masterpiece has been subjected, the present study proposes a reading from a socio-political point of view that, compared with De Amicis’ Cuore, highlights the opposite opinion of the two authors regarding the possibility (and the will) of the Italian people to realize the foundation of a nation following the unification of their country. At the end of the study, a working hypothesis is presented as a reading of Pinocchio as “Pinocchieide” and proposed as a parody (and overturning) of the Virgilian poem as the founding of the natio romana.

Abstract:

The periodicals under study are Olam Katon (Jerusalem, 1893), Gan Sha’ashu’im (Lyck, 1899–1900) and Olam Katan (Vienna/Cracow, 1901–1904). The article discusses not only what was translated in these periodicals, but also how and why certain pieces were translated. As the majority of the translated children’s literature was written by non-Jewish authors, the author is especially interested in the translators’ strategies of dealing with the sometimes obviously Christian content and how they negotiated the extent of “otherness” to which they exposed Jewish children. In addition to identifying some general tendencies, the author offers a close reading of three translations of stories by Mark Twain, Agnes Giberne and Edmondo de Amicis which serve as illustrations of the discussed problems.

Abstract:
During the years leading up to and during the First World War, patriotic films featuring self-sacrificing child protagonists formed an important sub-genre of Italian film production. This article looks at Film Artistica Gloria’s Cuore series (1915–1916), adapted from De Amicis’ novel, with particular attention given to the two war-themed films, Il tamburino sardo (UK: The Sardinian Drummer Boy, 1915) and La piccola vedetta lombarda (The Little Lookout from Lombardy, 1915). An examination of the way in which advertising, reviews, and promotional materials worked to reframe these Risorgimento stories within a new historical context shows how the transmedial relationship between the novel, films and paracinematic texts helped to transform De Amicis’s civically-minded patriotic tales into an endorsement of Italy’s intervention in the First World War.
