Abstract:
The polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan-ZnO/CuO nanoparticles film was researched. Synthesis, characterization, and its biological evaluation as an antibacterial of Staphylococcus aureus were the aims of this research. The biosynthesis of ZnO, CuO, and ZnO/CuO nanoparticles was done using the biological method. The polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan-ZnO/CuO nanoparticles film was synthesized using the casting method. All the products were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan-ZnO/CuO nanoparticles film as a paper disk for the evaluation as an antibacterial agent through the agar disk diffusion method. The absorption bands of ZnO, CuO, and ZnO/CuO nanoparticles can be observed at 318, 274, and 252 nm, respectively. The peaks at wavenumbers 433-673 and 619 cm-1 were Zn-O and Cu-O groups, respectively. The Zn-O and Cu-O groups at ZnO/CuO nanoparticles can be observed at 474 and 619 cm-1. The appearance of Zn-O and Cu-O groups at film PVA-chitosan-ZnO/CuO nanoparticles indicates the wavenumber between 433 and 673 cm-1. The physical structure of ZnO, CuO, and ZnO/CuO nanoparticles is crystalline form. The crystallite size of ZnO, CuO, and ZnO/CuO nanoparticles was estimated at 1.0572, 6.6315, and 2.3333 nm respectively. The physical structure of film PVA-chitosan-ZnO/CuO nanoparticles is amorphous. The surface morphology of films C, D, and E was affected by the addition of chitosan and ZnO/CuO nanoparticles. The film of PVA-chitosan-ZnO/CuO nanoparticles (C, D and E) can act as an antibaterial agent of Staphylococcus aureus. The inhibition zone of film D is higher than A, B, C, and E.

The zero resistance behavior of a CuO film sandwiched with YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7–δ films has been examined. The CuO is of tenorite C2/c structure which is a deformed NaCl-type lattice structure without being separated by an alkaline earth, and it forms a bulk in which copper is surrounded by nearly a square of Oxygen. The transition temperature Tce (R=0) in the fabricated sandwiched-type-CuO optimally increases over that of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7–δ film-electrodes.

Abstract:
Bacterial pathogens cause pain and death, add significantly to the expense of healthcare globally, and pose a serious concern in many aspects of daily life. Additionally, they raise significant issues in other industries, including pharmaceuticals, clothing, and food packaging. Due to their unique properties, a great deal of attention has been given to biogenic metal nanoparticles, nanocomposites, and their applications against pathogenic bacteria. This study is focused on biogenic silver and copper nanoparticles and their composites (UL/Ag2 O-NPS, Ul/CuO-NPs, and Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs) produced by the marine green alga Ulva lactuca. The characterization of biogenic nanoparticles UL/Ag2 O-NPS and Ul/CuO-NPs and their composites Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs has been accomplished by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, and the zeta potential. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) experiments were conducted to prove antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and anti-biofilm. The FTIR spectroscopy results indicate the exiting band at 1633 cm−1, which represents N–H stretching in nanocomposites, with a small shift in both copper and silver nanoparticles, which is responsible for the bio-reduction of nanoparticles. The TEM image reveals that the Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs were hexagonal, and the size distribution ranged from 10 to 35 nm. Meanwhile, Ul/CuO-NPs are rod-shaped, whereas UL/Ag2 O-NPS are spherical. The EDX analysis shows that Cu metal was present in a high weight percentage over Ag in the case of bio-Ag/Cu-NCMs. The X-ray diffraction denotes that Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs, UL/CuO-NPs, and UL/Ag2 O-NPS were crystalline. The results predicted by the zeta potential demonstrate that Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs were more stable than Ul/CuO-NPs. The antibacterial activity of UL/Ag2 O-NPS, Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs, and UL/CuO-NPs was studied against eleven Gram-negative and Gram-positive multidrug-resistant bacterial species. The maximum inhibition zones were obtained with UL/Ag2 O-NPS, followed by Ul/Ag/Cu-NCMs and Ul/CuO-NPs in all the tested bacteria. The maximum anti-biofilm percentage formed by E. coli KY856933 was obtained with UL/Ag2 O-NPS. These findings suggest that the synthesized nanoparticles might be a great alternative for use as an antibacterial agent against different multidrug-resistant bacterial strains.

Abstract:
Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results, from experiments performed at the Swiss Light Source, Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource, and Advanced Light Source synchrotrons, on the high-temperature superconductors Tl₂Ba₂CuO₆+δ (Tl2201) and YBa₂Cu₃O (YBCO₆.₅) are presented. An overdoped Tl2201 sample with a TC of 30K was found to have a Fermi surface, consisting of a large hole pocket centred at (Pi ,Pi ), which is approaching a topological transition. A superconducting gap consistent with a dχ₂−y₂ order parameter was detected. In contrast with the underdoped HTSCs, where the quasiparticle (QP) linewidth at the top of the band is maximal in the antinodal direction and minimal in the nodal direction, overdoped Tl2201 was revealed to have a reverse nodal-antinodal anisotropy, with sharp QP peaks in the antinodal region and broader peaks in the nodal region. The Tl2201 results establish Tl2201 as a valuable material for exploring the overdoped side of the phase diagram with ARPES. Synchrotron experiments also yielded the first successful ARPES results on underdoped YBa₂Cu₃O₇−δ (YBCO). Surface-sensitive techniques were previously unsuccessful in studying YBCO because its cleaved surfaces are polar, resulting in an overdoped surface regardless of the doping level of the bulk. By doping the cleaved surfaces with potassium, the surface was progressively hole underdoped from as-cleaved continuously to the doping of the bulk, and subsequent ARPES experiments performed revealed a transition from a holelike Fermi surface on the as-cleaved surface to disconnected Fermi arcs when the surface doping matched the bulk. In parallel with the synchrotron-based research, an in-house ARPES system was constructed at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Unlike conventional ARPES systems, the ARPES setup at UBC incorporates a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system, which allows novel materials to be grown, characterized, and transferred to the ARPES chamber in vacuo. Novel design techniques to improve the accuracy of ARPES measurements are presented. The in-house ARPES system also serves as a prototype for an ARPES–MBE endstation being constructed at the Canadian Light Source (CLS). Design studies of some potential improvements to the in-house system, to be implemented at the CLS, are also presented.

Abstract:
The fast growth of the population and industrialization have produced major concerns regarding energy availability and environmental pollution. Addressing these issues is at the forefront of global research. Solar energy, as a clean and almost infinite source, can be effectively harnessed through photocatalytic processes to contribute to environmental remediation. Hybrid nanomaterials, such as ZnO/noble metal and ZnO/metal oxides, emerge as promising candidates to achieve these goals due to their enhanced light absorption capability and excellent charge carrier separation. This thesis is dedicated to the development of new hybrid photocatalysts designed for the degradation of organic pollutants. The study explores two innovative synthesis pathways of ZnO, combined with photodeposited nanoparticles of metallic silver or copper oxide, onto ZnO. In the first part of the study, a solvothermal method was developed to prepare ZnO particles of approximately 87 nm associated with silver nanoparticles with an average size of 2.7 nm. This strategy involves the synthesis of silver-doped zinc double-layered hydroxides, followed by the photodeposition of Ag+ ions into Ag(0), and ultimately, the conversion through thermolysis of the double-layered hydroxide into ZnO. In the second part, the preparation via an environmentally friendly and easy photodeposition method was used to create heterostructured photocatalysts featuring a p-n junction between CuO-Cu₂O and ZnO. The novel synthesis methods for ZnO-based heterostructured catalysts developed in the framework of this thesis have led to the creation of nanohybrid materials exhibiting high efficiency in degrading persistent pollutants in aqueous environments. In terms of stability, these hybrid photocatalysts can be used over multiple degradation cycles without a significant loss of effectiveness. The project also involves the study of various experimental parameters to optimize the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the photocatalysts

Abstract:

Abstract:
The copper (II) oxide nanofibers (NFs) synthesized with the electrospinning method showed a necklace-like morphology and nanometric size. The use of the XPS (X-ray Photoelectronic Spectroscopy) technique allowed the analysis of the Cu 2p and O 1s orbitals showing a CuxO type stoichiometry (x = 1, 2, 3), in turn, the UPS (Ultraviolet Photoelectronic Spectroscopy) region determined the conduction state associated to the dielectric function. These data are compared with the EELS technique. The NFs have presented a behavior with double magnetic phase associated to the non-stoichiometry and oxygen vacancies, and the non-presence of the AFM phase due to the increase of the vacancies. In addition, their electronic and magnetic structure reveal spin-orbit related changes shown in the Cu 2p spectra. The results showed in the conduction band holes and the Cu 2p and O 1s orbitals.

Abstract:
The research on Y-Ba-Cu-O compounds has advanced tremendously since the discovery of high-T c superconductivity in 1986. First of all, the complete comprehension of the mechanism of superconductivity is of current interest. To date, the phenomenon of high-T c superconductivity in Y-Ba-Cu-O compounds cannot be understood by a consistent theory. Depending on the oxygen concentration in YBa2Cu3O7- x ′ one must distinguish between the metallic (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) and the semiconducting (0.6 ≤ x ≤ 1) states. Both phases were prepared a) by magnetron sputtering on SrTiO3 or sapphire substrates, resulting in thin (1 μm) films and b) by sintering of a polycrystalline mixture of Y2O3, BaCO3, and CuO. The dielectric constant and refractive index were pointed out by Kramers-Kronig analysis. The photocurrent of YBa2Cu3O6 was investigated experimentally and theoretically. It was demonstrated that the classical semiconductor theory holds for this kind of material. The Franz-Keldysh effect was observed in absorption and photocurrent. Beyond the classical features, new and previously not observed optical properties are reported: Superconductivity can be induced and tuned by laser illumination. Furthermore, it is possible to create a gradient of oxygen concentration perpendicular to the surface, causing a gap that depends on the depth of the samples. This leads to tuneable shifts between the photoluminescence and photocurrent maxima. Finally, from the combination of optical and electrical properties, a new model for the calculation of the critical temperature in Y-Ba-Cu-O compounds is presented.
