Abstract:
Police Community Support Officers: Cultures and Identities within Pluralized Policing presents the first in-depth ethnographic study of Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) since the creation of the role in 2002. Situated within the tradition of police ethnographies, this text examines the working worlds of uniformed patrol support staff in two English police forces. Based on over 350 hours of direct observation and thirty-three interviews with PCSOs and police constables in both urban and rural contexts, the book offers a detailed analysis of the operational and cultural realities of pluralized policing from within. Using a dramaturgic framework, the author finds that PCSOs have been undermined by their own organizations from the beginning, which has left a lasting legacy in terms of their relationships and interactions with police officer colleagues. The implications of this for police cultures, community policing approaches, and the success of pluralization are examined. The author argues that while PCSOs can have similar occupational experiences to those of constables, their particular circumstances have led to a unique occupational culture, one which has implications for existing police culture theories. The book considers these findings in light of budget reductions and police reforms occurring across the sector, processes in which PCSOs are particularly vulnerable.

Abstract:
This book examines the relationships forged between police officers and the diverse urban and rural communities in which they lived and worked in Scotland across the twentieth century. It considers the formal structures and rhetoric that defined and prescribed the policing ideal, as well as the ways in which policing was experienced from a range of grassroots’ perspectives. Drawing on a wealth of archival materials, oral history interviews, and memoirs, as well as previously unused primary sources, the authors identify factors that led to co-operation, consensus and the building of trust as well as tension and conflict across a century of social, political and technological change. The book compares the practices, cultures and repertoires of policing in urban and rural areas, highlighting the ways in which gender (as embodied and performed) shaped occupational identities, as well as race, ethnicity and religion.

Abstract:
The field of knowledge of Occupational Therapy is diversified and expanding. This book addresses several themes inherent in the profession from different theoretical and empirical perspectives. Organized by occupational therapy teachers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the book consolidates the scientific production of different authors and is organized around current themes presented to Occupational Therapy: professional education, health-related approaches and actions, as well as different approaches focusing on the socio-cultural perspectives of the profession. Some texts addressing the history of Occupational Therapy at UFRJ complement the work. The wide scope and diversity of this book are ensured in chapters that report experiences associated with university extension, research, and undergraduate teaching; address Occupational Therapy in the hospital, Occupational Health, Mental Health, and Psychosocial Care settings; emphasize the professional/cultural interface, social issues, and territorial and socio-community approaches; bring ethnic-racial and gender discussions. Finally, the history of the Occupational Therapy course at UFRJ is covered in the last three chapters: the struggling trajectory to establish the course is addressed in the first of these chapters; the second reports how the course has expanded since its first years; the third brings the path to consolidation of the Occupational Therapy service at the university hospital. This book, which is based on successful experiences and current scientific production, will certainly provide its readers with important reflections.
