Although entrepreneurship and culture are topics with extensive research on Management Studies, there is still relatively few research on the influence of Culture has on Entrepreneurship. The main objective of this work is to investigate the influence of culture on entrepreneurship rate of failure. Using a correlational approach, 40 countries out of Hofstede (2001) IBM employees database and the Entrepreneurship Data present on the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) database. The analysis results suggest that the dimension Individualism vs. Collectivism as the only significant cultural dimension when discussing affecting entrepreneurship rate of failure.
Bive, Rolf, and Bo Enbom. "Patient Safety Improvement with Crew Resource Management : transformation from a blame culture to a learning culture." Thesis, Sophiahemmet Högskola, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:shh:diva-2604.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Being able to learn from mistakes is a vital aspect of nurse’s professionalism and increasing patient safety. With Crew Resource Management methodologies, aviation and other High Risk Organisations have succeeded in enabling learning cultures that should be applicable also to healthcare. Purpose The purpose was to describe how Crew Resource Management and the inherent learning culture could improve nurse’s professionalism and patient safety within the healthcare system.  Method A literature overview based on database searches in CINAHL, PubMed and a manual search, resulting in 25 scientific articles analysed using an integrated analysis method and quality review.  Results Crew Resource Management implementations have a positive effect on the nurse’s professional role and patient safety but have still not reached the full potential. Incident reporting is a key factor in providing feedback but still encounters barriers as a basis for pre-emptive learning. Identified barriers are not using Crew Resource Management components as a whole, a lack of feedback and an insufficient learning culture. Feedback is connected to nurse’s perception and situational awareness strengthening morale and professionalism. Conclusion Nurses professionalism and patient safety is dependent on being able to learn from mistakes which is a key aspect of Crew Resource Management. Learning is enabled by the reporting of mistakes in incident reporting systems without the fear of being punished. Improvements to both systems and the reporting culture are seen as needed, as-well as changes to the education system promoting reporting as part of an overall safety and learning culture.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the social determinants of health in Appalachia. Using anthropological ethnographic field methods, this thesis explores the ways in which public assistance programs and exchanges between health care practitioners and clients result in discourses of blame and responsibly. Also included is a discussion of the role that health insurance plays in granting or denying individuals living in poverty the opportunity for treatment and care. The narratives collected for this project then become the bases for a critical examination of the public discourse surrounding health care reform in the United States in 2009 and 2010.

Waring, Sara. "An examination of the impact of accountability and blame culture on police judgments and decisions in critical incident contexts." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2011. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/5275/.

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis examines the impact of accountability on police judgments and decisions within critical incident contexts. Previous accountability research has often failed to balance experimental control with naturalistic context, thereby preventing the development of an integrated socio-cognitive model. Despite the increase in police accountability over the last few decades (Punch, 2009), there has also been a lack of systematic focus on the influence this evaluation mechanism has on policing. Level of risk posed to public safety in critical incidents and the potential for police actions to increase as well as decrease this risk heightens the importance of identifying and understanding factors that influence police judgments and decisions (Ask & Granhag, 2005). Overall, the thesis seeks to both advance theoretic development and highlight practical implications for policing using a combination of experimental and naturalistic methods and theories from traditional, organisational and naturalistic decision paradigms. Research conducted therefore acknowledges the complexity of policing contexts whilst distinguishing the influence of accountability from other factors. In total, five data chapters are presented that comprise of both qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data consists of transcripts from electronic focus groups, debriefs and questionnaires that are analysed using thematic analysis. Quantitative data consists of police responses to a vignette and a simulation. Findings indicate that accountability may influence police judgments and decisions by altering emotions, motivational goals and attention focus. The influence of this social mechanism may depend on police perceptions of the organisational culture driving the form accountability takes. This thesis will highlight that accountability is most likely to encourage optimal performance when police view the organisation to provide a supportive environment with legitimate and fair appraisal mechanisms. This is in contrast to an unfair, illegitimate environment driven by a culture of blame. Within a supportive environment, police are more likely to be motivated by accuracy than self-preservation. A supportive environment also encourages attention to remain focussed on providing judgments and decisions suitable for the situation rather than becoming distracted by anxiety over the potential to be blamed and punished.

Abstract:
Heuristic estimates of probabilities may be an obstacle to decision making within High Reliability Organizations. Accident reports have found that two from each other separate phenomenon, Blame Culture and Type 1 processing constitutes a particularily serious threat to decision making. The present study (N = 70) investigated if a perceived risk of negative feedback and cognitive load would lead to more heuristic estimates on the Conjunction Fallacy. Three experiment conditions were included in the study: Negative feedback, cognitive load and control. The results were non-significant for both negative feedback and cognitive load. Furthermore, the estimated negative affect was higher when violations to the Conjunction Rule was made. Previous studies showing that high scores on the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) indicate less sensitivity to conjunction fallacies, were replicated. The present study concluded that the CRT may be a strong predictor of the Conjunction Fallacy.

Granlund, Johan, and Carl Persson. "Jaha, kommer du idag? : En kartläggning av sjöingenjörsstudenters upplevelse av den organisatoriska och sociala arbetsmiljön ombord under sin fartygsförlagda praktik." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Sjöfartshögskolan (SJÖ), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-95275.

Abstract:
The purpose of the work presented in this student thesis was to identify how marine engineer students have experienced the organisational and social work environment onboard during their internships, and if their experiences have affected their future career choices. A qualitative research approach was adopted. Data collection was performed through two semi-structured focus group interviews and ten semi-structured individual in-depth interviews. The data analysis was interpreted hermeneutic and semantic, and the result was presented thematic. The participating students shared many experiences. Most of the students were given the mandatory familiarization training onboard, but in many cases this was not completed until after the students first work task onboard the ship. Almost all the students worked more hours than stipulated in the student agreement. Some of the students experienced bad behaviour and were treated badly by their supervisor. Even though students experienced shortcomings in the organisational and social work environment, most of the students were still willing to pursue a career at sea. A small part of the students did not want to work at sea due to their experiences of poor social work environment and lack of leadership onboard.

Abstract:
At a time when the IT industry in general and the IT academy in particular face major challenges, some accuse universities of producing graduates with poor or inappropriate skills. This qualitative study, based on interviews with fifteen senior IT executives and managers in the Australian financial services industry, examines what employers seek when they recruit new graduates. We find that employers now expect much more from IT graduates. They require a blend of technical, business and people skills combined with the right attitude. Furthermore, requirements are highly mediated by contextual factors such as company size and corporate culture. We also find that universities are not perceived as negatively as some would have it. Universities face a significant challenge in producing graduates with much wider skill sets. Although this study was conducted in Australia, we are of the opinion that the issues discussed are relevant in the wider international context.

Abstract:
The view over most cities of haphazard urban sprawl, and the general dismal qualities of most modern architecture, seem irreconcilable with the fact that, before being let loose on our environment, Architects are incarcerated for 5 years or so in an Academic Institution. Why is this? It is our thesis that it is not necessarily the quality of teaching that is to blame, but rather the context. We believe that by organising studio project work in a way which addresses wider issues such as procurement, and an understanding of the role that other professionals inevitably play in the design process, a richer outcome is achievable. We will explore this theme and propose some simple, but fundamental, changes to architectural education. We will discuss two projects devised by the authors with a view to addressing the perceived imbalance between the input of academics, and the output of professionals.

Abstract:
Risk assessments underpin a maritime operation’s safety management system. When applied to an untested concept a risk assessment can also assist with overcoming resistance to new technology. This paper proposes the functional resonance analysis method (FRAM) as a tool for developing design recommendations and fulfilling the safety management objectives of the ISM Code. The FRAM is applied to benefit the floating harbour transhipper (FHT), a novel concept for the transhipment of bulk commodities. The FHT acts as a large floating warehouse with an aft well dock that provides shelter for a feeder vessel. The FHT’s materials handling equipment transfers bulk cargo from the feeder vessel onto its own stockpile or directly to an export vessel moored alongside, or from its stockpile to the export vessel. Most risk assessment tools focus on identifying and addressing system components that can potentially fail. With the FRAM however, the scope, direction and recommendations are guided by a practical understanding of the variability of work undertaken rather than preconceived notions of potential failure modes. Adopting a method based on maximising resilience rather than minimising the causes of accidents promotes a shift from a blame culture to a safety culture. Applying the FRAM generated a deeper, broader and more transparent understanding of the FHT transfer operation than what would have been achievable using traditional risk assessment tools. This understanding was used to develop recommendations designed to improve the resilience of the FHT operation.

Full text
Abstract:
Nearly 17 years after the US invasion, Iraq ranks first in the list of the most corrupt and least stable countries in the world. The state of instability and rampant corruption in Iraqi society since 2003 made some critics blame the constitution itself as the main obstacle to the country's democratic transition. For them, the hasty method of drafting the constitution, the absence of Iraqi constitutional expertise, and the lateral representation of Sunni Arabs are among the factors that have contributed to the precarious situation in Iraq over the past years. Likewise, critics argue that the ambiguity and ambiguity in some constitutional articles hindered its application. Amid these readings, the October revolution erupted on October 1, 2019 in Baghdad and the rest of the southern governorates of Iraq in protest against the deteriorating economic conditions of the country, unemployment, and the spread of administrative corruption. The demands of the demonstrators reached to change the constitution and amend the electoral law. Thus, the question posed in this paper is to what extent can the constitution really be an obstacle to the democratization process in Iraq? This paper discusses that the nature of Iraqi society as a deeply divided society, the absence of the previous democratic experience among the citizens, the weakness of the political culture of cooperation and tolerance among the political elites, and external interference are among the main obstacles to the democratic transformation in the country. Finally, the conclusion of the study is that despite all the criticisms and criticisms about the democratic experience in Iraq, the process of democratic transformation is slow in itself, and therefore it can be said that the process is still ongoing and has not failed yet.

Abstract:
Who are you? Where are you from? How did you end up in Malaysia? These are the common questions that the Nepalese community here in Malaysia has had to respond to many a time. We cannot blame the naïve attitudes that our Malaysians possess but it is a matter of regret that most Malaysians from other ethnic groups are not aware of the Nepalese community here, simply because there has been no exposure to their presence. The intangible heritage of one’s ethnicity and culture play a crucial role in pointing out one’s origin, identity and existence. In the context of tourism, it is essential to sustain this minority group as it may arouse the interest of the Nepalese not only in their motherland but also around the globe. Tourists will be interested to learn about how the Nepali diaspora is able to preserve their unique traditions despite the influence of urbanisation and other culturalisations. The authors would apply the functionalist approach to discuss how the intangible tourism not only benefits the nation’s economy but also functions to prevent the extinction of the Malaysian Nepalese customs. The research questions that are posed for this paper are as follows i) How do the Nepalese Malaysians sustain their intangible heritage? ii) What measures are this minority group taking to safeguard their tradition? and iii) In what way will the preservation be able to benefit the country and themselves? In-depth interviews with 15 informants will be conducted along with consensual audio-recording. Transcriptions of the interviews will analyse the thematic patterns coupled with peer checking to reduce bias for the data to be credible and trustworthy. The outcome of this research will be presented.

Abstract:
Abstract Serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) occurring in the workplace have become a significant focus in the field of safety. Over the past 20 years there has been a steady decline in the prevalence of all injuries, however the rates of SIFs have plateaued in recent years, contrary to Heinrich's Triangle. In one of the largest studies of its kind, we set out to identify trends and common factors of SIF incidents to identify strategies to reduce the risk of SIF incidents occurring. We have studied OSHA log records and OSHA recorded fatalities of over 50,000 companies over multiple years broken down by numerous different indicies including industry, age, day of the week, body part affected, type of incident and severity of incident to give a picture of SIF prevalence and trends. This data has also been cross referenced against qualititive information of these companies to identify trends, commonalities and disparities in order to identify causes and opportunities for improvement. The data reported on has shown different risk groups for SIF incidents occurring, that 60% of companies are at low risk of SIF incidents occurring and identifying the highest risk injuries for SIF events occurring (drilling and construction work). In addition, seemingly random factors such as day of the week and month of they year are found to statistically vary, presenting opportunities for targetted outreach based on this data in order to reduce risk. Furthermore, the study reveals companies who work with chemicals, performing welding work and work at heights should be the top targets for SIF prevention intervention, whilst the impact of heavily regulated industries (e.g., PSM facilities) and ensuring organisations have good safety procedures are linked to lower risks of SIF events occuring. This information is of valuable use for all organisations who are interested in truly understanding the root causes of incidents and learning techniques to achieve a Vision Zero of a reduction of incidents, particularly serious injuries and fatalities, to the lowest possible level. A no-blame culture to the accurate reporting of incidents is also vital to a deeper understanding of causation and prevention.

Abstract:
Like other bird and mammal species whose populations have been restored through conservation efforts, wild turkeys are treasured by many recreationists and outdoor enthusiasts. Wild turkeys have responded positively to wildlife habitat and population management. In some areas, however, their increased populations have led to increased damage to property and agricultural crops, and threats to human health and safety. Turkeys frequent agricultural fields, pastures, vineyards and orchards, as well as some urban and suburban neighborhoods. Because of this, they may cause damage or mistakenly be blamed for damage. Research has found that despite increases in turkey numbers and complaints, damage is often caused by other mammalian or bird species, not turkeys. In the instances where turkeys did cause damage, it was to specialty crops, vineyards, orchards, hay bales or silage pits during the winter. In cultured crops or gardens where wood chips, pine straw or other bedding materials (mulch) are placed around plants, wild turkeys sometimes scratch or dig up the material and damage plants when searching for food. Wild turkeys are a valuable game species, treasured by recreational hunters and wildlife enthusiasts.
