Although cross-cultural leadership research has thrived in international business literature, little attention has been devoted to understanding the effectiveness of non-western theories beyond their original contexts. The purpose of this study is to examine the cross-cultural endorsement of paternalistic leadership, an emerging non-western leadership theory, using data from GLOBE project. Using multigroup confirmatory factor analyses we found measurement equivalence of a scale derived from GLOBE’s data, which enabled us to compare the endorsement of paternalistic leadership dimensions across 10 cultural clusters and 55 societies. Our study revealed that there are significant differences in the importance societies give to each dimension, suggesting that paternalism as leadership style is not universally nor homogeneously endorsed. Furthermore, results suggest that different patterns of endorsement of each of these dimensions give rise to idiosyncratic shades of paternalistic leadership across societies. Implications for theory and future research on international business are discussed.
Paternalistic leadership is a flourishing area in leadership literature, traditionally assumed to be culture bounded. However, empirical evidences have suggested that rather than national cultures, the conditions under which paternalistic leaders are effective can be related to the fit between the style of a leader and that of his or her followers. In the present research, we focus on paternalistic leadership and contrast it with empowering leadership, as two opposite ways on how leaders influence followers, to explore the individual conditions under which both styles can be effective. Adopting a follower-centered approach, we base our arguments on person-supervisor (P-S) fit theory and regulatory focus theory to propose that leadership effectiveness may be contingent to followers’ own values and motivational needs. We expected paternalistic leadership behaviors (e.g, authority, benevolence, support) to supply motivational needs for predominantly prevention-focused followers, and empowering leadership behaviors (e.g. empowerment, encouragement and autonomy) to supply motivational needs for predominantly promotion-focused followers. Using data collected from two experimental studies and a business simulation, we found support for these ideas, showing that fit increased followers’ perception of attitudinal and behavioral outcomes, such as in-role and creative performance.

Aderiye, Yetunde Oluwatoyin. "Facilities management 'cultural fit' and the socialisation of external service provider employees in client organisations." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2015. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4384/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis’ original contribution to knowledge is creating the awareness that facilities management (FM) departments and organisations do not consciously socialise external service provider staff into the client workplace and the development of a framework that can successfully achieve this integration. To provide a solid theoretical background for this framework, it reviews current literature on FM, outsourcing, organisational culture, and organisational socialisation. The aim of this study was achieved with the development of the ‘Cultural Fit’ framework which should go a long way in solving the research problem and answering the proposed question. The study was conducted as a qualitative multi-method design. This was selected because there were obvious gaps in socialisation especially in the FM industry. Qualitative methods are believed to provide richer data and this was adopted to begin closing those gaps through the provision of literary data. The research was conducted using the ethnographic approach because of the focus on culture and to maximise the qualitative approach. Interviews and focus groups are the qualitative methods used to collect this data. Reliability and validity are not always easy to verify but researchers have proposed several methods to improve them. This study employs the triangulation of more than one method of data collection, peer debriefing with colleagues, member checks by confirming the initial results during subsequent data collection and a rich, thick description. The major findings of this study are that organisational socialisation can be successful in socialising external service provider staff into the client workplace despite a current unawareness of its use. This study has developed a framework and guide that can be used to achieve this integration if client organisations and service providers work together to socialise external service provider staff.

Abstract:
Diversity practitioners in the United States have taken steps to implement programs for integration of people in organizations from across the socioeconomic and demographic spectrum. Despite changes in U.S. discrimination laws and work by diversity practitioners, maintaining equitable workplace diversity continues to be a problem in U.S. corporations. This correlational study was conducted to examine differences in life-guiding principles, urban identification, and person-organization fit between urban and suburban residents. A purposive sample of 180 adults was drawn in a voluntary online survey from industries in two U.S. representative counties with a mix of urban and suburban sprawl. This study was also conducted to further examine planned behavior, expectancy, normative social influence, and social impact theories by comparing how the independent variable of participant residence location affected the dependent variables of life-guiding principles, urban identification, and person-organization fit. T-test statistics were used to test mean differences in normally distributed data sets, and the Mann-Whitney U test was used for testing differences in non-normally distributed data sets. Test results revealed that there were differences in the dependent variables with a significant difference in urban identification for urban and suburban residents, confirming the hypothesis. Findings from this study may help diversity practitioners and organizational leaders understand the differences among urban and suburban residents. Study findings may also support organizations' social agenda toward addressing diversity issues and for narrowing career achievement gaps between urban and suburban residents through a better understanding of variations in culture.

Abstract:
Multisystemic Therapy (MST) provides intensive short-term interventions for young people with antisocial behaviour and the systems that surround them. A wealth of research over the past 30 years has demonstrated the efficacy of MST. Its success has led to it being transported to many countries and this prompted investigations into the need for cultural adaptation. Despite these investigations highlighting the importance of tailoring MST to new countries, when MST was transported to England in 2001, it did not undergo a formal process of cultural tailoring. This study employed a qualitative approach using a Grounded Theory methodology to explore the assumption that all transported programmes require a level of adaptation and aimed to identify the processes and rationale behind informal ‘cultural tailoring' undertaken by therapists. It aimed to explore areas in MST that might benefit from ‘cultural tailoring' to improve the effectiveness of its implementation in England. Eight MST therapists from across three MST teams in England participated in semi-structured interviews. Analysis of the data generated a theoretical model of adherence: the Post Implementation Model of Adherence (PIMA). The PIMA model seeks to explain how therapists in England experience and manage adhering to MST. It proposes that MST therapists strive to adhere to all aspects of the MST model whilst ensuring that it is acceptable and workable for the families and systems they work with. The PIMA model comprised four theoretical codes: Facilitators to therapists staying faithful to the MST model; barriers to therapists implementing MST, overcoming barriers to implementing MST; and the therapist holding the tension. The findings highlight important cultural adjustments to improve MST's ‘fit' in England. Findings also extend Schoenwald's (2008) recommendations for successful transportation of MST, by drawing attention to how a lack of cultural tailoring can be overcome or experienced as stressful by therapists.

Sasaki-Skopp, Amanda. "Development of a Culturally Responsive PBIS Toolkit." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/23097.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this grant proposal is to develop a toolkit to support school teams in the development and implementation of culturally responsive Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The toolkit is necessary to help school teams address lingering disparities in discipline and to improve school climate. Exclusionary discipline, such as out of school suspensions and expulsion, disproportionately affects ethnically and racially diverse students, and has a devastating effect on student outcomes, including academic achievement, attendance, and graduation. Ethnically and racially diverse students are also more likely to be given a disciplinary consequence for behaviors that require a subjective interpretation of the student’s behavior, which can be influenced by implicit bias. In schools that have implemented PBIS, exclusionary discipline has been shown to decrease overall, but disproportionate discipline persists. The development of a culturally responsive toolkit will support the efforts of school PBIS teams to decrease disproportionate discipline outcomes. The toolkit will assist school teams with the cultural adaptation of core features of PBIS by providing a process for addressing contextual fit of the school and soliciting feedback from the school community. The methodological approach for this project includes both qualitative and quantitative processes. An expert panel will be convened to address the complexities of implementation and cultural adaptation within the context of PBIS. The culturally responsive PBIS toolkit will consist of a comprehensive series of recommended practices, contextual considerations, evaluation tools, and resources, to be used concurrently with analysis of schoolwide data. The toolkit will be piloted in schools in the Pacific Northwest and then disseminated.

Abstract:
As German organisations expand their businesses into China, the potential risks associated with a lack of fit in management styles among International Joint Venture (IJV) partner-firms have become increasingly obvious to academic researchers, human resource professionals and partner-firm managers themselves. The general consensus among researchers and practitioners is that cultural differences in management styles are a major deterrent to the success of IJVs. Limited research has been undertaken to specifically examine and identify how partner-firm managers can overcome this barrier in Sino-German IJVs.

Nyambegera, S. M. "The relationship between cultural value orientations, human resource management preferences, person-organisation fit and job involvement in Kenya." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2000. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/10294/.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of the research was to establish existing cultural value orientations and the extent of their influence on HRM preferences in the Kenyan context. The study undertook analyses of value orientations at the individual level to enable a better understanding of the role of cultural values in predicting HRM preferences. Essentially, the study determined how much variance in individual preference for HR system design can be attributed to the influence of value orientations and examined which values influence which work-related preferences in Kenya. Further, the study explored the extent to which fit between HRM preferences and actual policy practice impact levels of job involvement in a developing country context. The study also focused on the fit of individual values with organisational culture, as represented by the value orientations of others in the organisation. A survey was administered to 500 employees in eight Kenyan organisations. The analyses are based on 274 responses. The questionnaire assessed: a) cultural values using the Cultural Perspectives Questionnaire (CPQ4) based on the conceptualisation of value orientations by Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck (1961); b) HRM policy practice preferences and organisation actual policy practice based on items proposed by Schuler and Jackson (1987); and c) job involvement based on the scale developed by Kanungo (1982). I found evidence that on average, the sample held the following cultural value orientations: activity thinking and doing values characterising Kenyans as rational and goal oriented; relationship values emphasised both collateral and individual values and also to some extent hierarchical values. For HRM preferences Kenyans prefer high involvement/participation, high predictable rewards, performance E RM practices, and high empowerment. Three of these preferences were linked to cultural values. By identifying which HRM preferences are value-free or value-linked, researchers can gain insights into both the efficiency of a local HRM process and the transferability of the process. Ethnicity was also seen to play a role in cultural values as the sample reported significant differences between values such as subjugation and human nature good-evil. V The pervasive value-linked nature of the HRM process was also evident. This study shows one way in which employee preferences for HRM policies and practices could be predicted from cultural value orientations. Further, the study has shown that focusing on individual cultural value orientations can enable more subtle understanding of national cultural values and variance within national cultures. There is a link between job involvement and cultural values and fit. HRM preferencepolicy fit in this sample has a partial impact on job involvement. Also, the interaction between individual values and the values of others in an organisation (person-culture fit) may impact levels of job involvement.

Williams, Daniel. "Conflict Resolution: An Examination of Perceptions of Cultural Conflict Resolution Strategies in Organizations." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/419.

Full text
Abstract:
Conflict resolution research has resided at both the individual and group level for the many years. However, recent findings have provided evidence for the existence of conflict resolution strategies at the cultural level. As these recent findings indicate, the existence of such resolution styles at that macro level can have great implications on organizational outcomes. Therefore, the first goal of this study was to examine if these conflict resolution cultures would predict outcomes such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and psychological withdrawal behavior. Similarly, research on P-O fit has also provided some very interesting insights into employee behavior and attitudes. Given the idiosyncratic nature of conflict resolution and the recent findings mentioned in the previous paragraph, the second goal of this study was to examine if perceptions of congruence between an individual’s resolution style and the organization’s resolution style would affect job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and psychological withdrawal behavior. Finally, it was determined that perceptions of resolution (i.e. was the conflict constructively resolved) would be an appropriate and rather informative mediating variable for the relationships proposed above. Data was collected using a web-based survey software, which garnered 212 participants for the analysis. Evidence was found to support a majority of the proposed hypotheses. All three-conflict resolution cultures (collaborative, dominant, and avoidant) predicted the outcome variables in the directions consistent with both logic and the literature. Similarly, perceptions of resolution did mediate six of the nine proposed relationships between the resolution cultures and the outcome variables. Two of these mediation analyses were not conducted due to an insignificant initial bivariate correlation. Support was also found for all three proposed direct effects between perceptions of congruence and the proposed outcome variables. Finally, perceptions of resolution mediated the relationship between perceptions of congruence and all three-outcome variables. Again, the directions of these findings were consistent with both logic and the literature. Both the theoretical and practical implications, as well as the limitations with this study will be discussed.

Abstract:
The celebration of a White heteronormative masculinity is still vivid in Heavy Metal. This has embodied and discursive consequences that are visible in the domination of Metal spaces or the marginalisation of female, trans* or non-binary musicians, but also in an aesthetics of (hetero- and cis-) sexism and racism that is often apparent. Nevertheless, Metal is still empowering and joyful for those who experience exclusion and marginalisation. They have found ways to react and organise an alternative participation in Heavy Metal. Using a queered approach to Cultural Studies, this study aims at intervening in the continuous reproduction of a normative White and straight Metal masculinity. Collecting data from five ethnographic interviews with queer Metalheads and additional autoethnographic data, it shows how queer Metalheads organise their participation in Heavy Metal and create an alternative Metal cosmology. This study is not only a theoretical intervention. As a result of the interview project, a new community of queer Metalheads was created.

Abstract:
In this study of intercultural communication, I investigate the multi-faceted meaning of the expression " cultural fit " in the sense that it is used by recruiters when shortlisting Indian information technologists to fill skills shortages for the Y2K project in Australia. The data is in the form of ten videotaped interviews in Bangalore and the recruiter commentary on those tapes in Melbourne. A crucial decision to be made by recruiters in any shortlisting process is " How will the candidate fit into the workplace?" This question becomes more problematical when applied to overseas-trained professionals. I take a critical approach, drawing principally on the research traditions of linguistics where studies of intercultural communication and workplace interaction intersect, employing chiefly the tools of Critical Discourse Analysis and Interactional Sociolinguistics and the more abstract notions of Bourdieu. A bridge between these different discourse approaches is provided by Sarangi & Roberts < 1999 < who show the connection between the larger institutional order and interactional routines, through an elaboration of frontstage talk and backstage talk following Goffman < 1959 < . An analysis of the interviews < frontstage talk < reveals "cultural fit" to involve a knowledge of institutional talk, in particular, directness. The recruiter commentary < backstage talk < draws attention to issues of intelligibility, body language, technical expertise and workplace values. the study shows that Indian Information Technologists have "partial fit" in that they possess technical fit but do not demonstrate, or lack the opportunity to demonstrate in the interview, Australian workplace values such as small talk, humour and informality. The recruiter judgments were fleeting and apart from checking for intelligibility, were made on the basis of candidates' body language thus highlighting its importance and its relative absence from the discourse approaches mentioned above. This study shows clearly that there is room for more communicative flexibility on the part of all the stakeholders.

Choo, Hye Won. "The cultural production and consumption of the fit body in South Korea : focus on established-outsider figuration of the body in the fitness field." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/32514.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which the fit body has acted as an established form of capital in Korea. In addressing this question, this research explores the theoretical and methodological links between Bourdieu‘s and Elias‘s perspectives. In particular, using the fitness field as the context, this study examines specific types of valued capital and assesses the ways in which figurations between actors are produced and reproduced in ways that reinforce and sometimes disrupt 'established-outsider‘ (E-O) figurations in other fields (such as the academic field). In working toward its findings, this work makes use of multiple methods, including historical media analysis, media production study, interviews, and comparison of Gangnam and Gangbuk, to name but a few. This diverse array of approaches allows for a more robust and nuanced look at the E-O figuration of the body (Elias & Scotson, 1994) that grounded the production and reproduction of body capital and habitus in the fitness field. The findings also reveal that fit bodies are pivotal to the formation of symbolic power in Korean socio-historical contexts. E-O figuration of fitness media production teams influences media texts. Fitness media texts underline the virtue of fit bodies while disguising symbolic violence toward the outsider body. TV producers of fitness programs and star trainers as cultural intermediaries reproduce the belief in the notion of the fit body through media strategies that include storytelling, body models, and intellectualization. Fitness clubs, members, and trainers in Gangnam and Gangbuk are distinguished by their fitness capital, academic capital, and civility. Thus, in contemporary Korean society, fitness is a hidden path that allows for and consolidates the reproduction of Established-Outsider hierarchies; as such, it has a distinctive/civilized mode, a specific form of cultural capital, and undeniable connection to Western fitness culture.

Abstract:
A 1755 advert in the Gloucester Journal listed for sale, 'A MODERN-BUILT HOUSE, with four rooms on a floor, fit for a gentleman'. In the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, 'gentlemen's houses' like the one described evolved as a cultural norm. This thesis offers a social and cultural reading of an under-studied group of small free-standing classical houses built in the west of England between 1680 and 1770. By developing a profile of eighty-one gentlemen's houses and one hundred and thirty-four builders and owners, this study unites subjects such as the history of architecture, landscapes, domestic interiors, objects and social development that are often treated separately. The design, spatial arrangement, and furnishings of gentlemen's houses precisely defined the position of their builders and owners in the social hierarchy. The 1720s marked an important shift in the location and meaning of building that corresponded to an alteration in the background of builders. Small classical houses moved from a relatively novel form of building for the gentry to a conventional choice made by newcomers often from commercial and professional backgrounds. Gentlemen's houses projected status in a range of settings for both landed and non-landed elites, highlighting the house as a form of status-enhancing property rather than land. Moreover, gentlemen's houses had adaptable interior spaces and were furnished with an array of objects that differed in number and quality from those lower and higher in society. The connections between gentlemen's houses and important processes of social change in Britain are striking. House-building and furnishing were measured strategic activities that calibrated social status and illustrated mobility. This thesis demonstrates that gentlemen's houses are one key to understanding the permeability of the English elite as well as the combination of dynamism and stability that characterized eighteenth-century English society.

Yang, Jun. "A Cultural Analysis of Employees' Work Values and Their Consequences for Work-Related Outcomes: The Case of China." FIU Digital Commons, 2015. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2327.

Abstract:
To create and maintain a fully engaged workforce, establishing person-organization (P-O) fit among employees has continued to be a central focus of organizational research. In addition, with growing numbers of older workers approaching retirement age, younger workers will soon become the dominant segment of the future workforce. Given this unfolding population trend, it has become increasingly necessary for organizations to gain a clearer understanding of the work values of the growing young population of workers and how P-O fit based on those work values may be linked to desirable work-related attitudes and behaviors. The overarching aim of this dissertation is two-fold: (1) investigate the generational differences and similarities in work values among younger Chinese workers; (2) uncover the underlying mechanisms by which the linkages between the work-value-based person-organization fit and employee work outcomes may be influenced by the impact of leader-member exchange (LMX) and perceived organizational support (POS). In this study, I used a research design that blended interviews and two survey-based studies to address four main research questions. More specifically, I conducted a pilot test to refine the work-value scale in China, and to pretest the established and validated measures for the key variables. In the second study, I gathered survey data from a sample of 179 employees from three Chinese small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The research findings showed no significant differences in employee work values between the two younger generations (i.e., the Social-Reform Generation and the Millennials Generation). Regarding the hypothesized conceptual scheme that links P-O fit and work outcomes, the results supported most of my hypotheses. Specifically, P-O fit is a significant predictor of three important work outcomes; it is positively related to job satisfaction and organizational commitment, while negatively related to turnover intention after controlling for demographic characteristics. The three hypothesized mediating mechanisms involving POS also received empirical support. That is, as predicted, POS mediates the effect of P-O fit on job satisfaction, organizational support, and turnover intention. Finally, when LMX was incorporated into the conceptual model and statistical analyses, the findings revealed that there was overall moderated mediation for the connections between P-O fit, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment, but no moderated mediation for the connection between P-O fit and turnover intention.

Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) are an example of those organizational changes that can significantly affect the generation of value in any one form of business. In these (people) movements, integration plays an outstanding role. During this process, all actions involved in the management of available resources need to be carefully monitored and treated, for they can be of straight influence on the results of transactions performed. In Brazil, and especially after the second half of the nineties, one could record a large number of company mergers, particularly among banking organizations. People with clearly distinct cultures, values, and beliefs were pooled into the same organizational bowl, and, in a few cases, were integrated in a hurried and disorderly manner, thereby resulting in clear dismantling of values. The results of local and international research work suggest that a significant portion of the critical success factors in any M&A process refer to the carefull integration of work teams, and adequate consideration to the characteristics of the involved individuals. During the period ranging from 1995 through 2004, Unibanco acquired and absorbed various companies, thereby setting up a very important study background in this field of knowledge. This work presents some of the cases illustrating the path adopted by Unibanco in the acquisition and integration of companies, by means of a Multiple Case Study, further subdivided into four main movements: 1 – “Banco Nacional”, 2 – “Banco Bandeirantes”, 3 – “Credibanco” and 4 – “Retail Companies”. In these cases, some strategic, operational, and – in a little more detail – people management aspects are highlighted and analysed, relating to the processes of post-acquisition integration employed by Unibanco during the research period. According to those analyses, it comes to perception that Unibanco performed a clear evolution in the organization or its postacquisition integration process, when viewed from the standpoint of the theoretical fundamental grounds set forth herein. Such evolution could be noticed in various aspects of the integration process, but mainly in three factors: organization of the transition team, communication, and focus on people during the whole process.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to study the material culture - represented by the architecture and clothing - of societies that maintain or at some point had nomadic behaviors. The research deals with bodies that are in movement, marked by rites and exposed to extreme environmental conditions; Clothing and accessories made to measure and imbued with supernatural powers and dwellings aware of their ephemerality. Its general objective is to study the interrelationships that are established through ephemeral supports such as shelters and costumes. Speci?ically, it seeks to know the processes of production of the nomadic housing space; to seize and identify the process of designing, making and using garments; to perceive the importance of nomadic material culture manifestations for their identity and aesthetics and to look for constructive, visual and aesthetic similarities between nomadic garments and shelters. The dissertation is the result of the bibliographical review of the works of Bernard Rudofsky, Florencia Ferrari, Labelle Prussin, Mark Jarzombek, Mette Bovin, Paul Oliver, Robert Kroenenburg, Torvald Faegre among others; the case study of the Calon Gypsies and four other nomadic societies: Bedouin, Inuit, Tuareg and Wodaabes; visits to the Calon camps in São Paulo and Espírito Santo and interviews with the seamstress specialized in gypsy dresses. This work strengthens the conceptual and practical link between clothing and architecture through the parallel study of these two cultural manifestations. It ?inds that the nomadic clothing goes far beyond the need for protection and the desire for ornamentation, often being related to the cosmology or the myths and beliefs of these societies and reiterates the importance of rethinking the classic and scholarly conceptions of architecture.

The current study linked to the 'State Policies, School Organization and Teachers Formation' Research Line aims to analyse the festive school culture in our schools since it is understood that the study of symbolical aspects contained in the rituals of celebration feasts can help to know elements of school identity and watch important aspects of the structure of a Laical-Brazilian state school. The school commemorative dates, the school calendar feasts haven't disconnected of the liturgical calendar. So, we ask: What are the reasons of the religious commemorative feasts in a state and laical school? For the attainment of the reasearch we conducted a bibliographical review privileging the socio-anthropological literature about feast and religiosity passing by the studies about the school organization. We also conducted the empirical work, using questionnaires and interviews by which under our theoretical board , we tried to analyse the teachers' perspectives of a state school in the State of Paraná, Brasil , about the religiosity and commemoratives feasts in school quotidian. Fom the bibliographical and empirical data on we were able to infer that the commemorative feasts have an importance as an element of cohesion , identity and religiosity in the interior of the school and they let reveal the historical and social structures that haven't not only presented as survival of the past in the present, they are in fact contemporaries and structural of our vision of world and our ethos cultural

Abstract:

The objective was o analyze how discourse from of speeches that circulate in Brazilian informative magazines proposes a way of govern the end of life, in other words, this work is about the production of subjects that govern their end. The search is subscribed in field of Cultural Studies, in its Post-structuralist line, and its theoretical and methodological reference is the thought of philosopher Michel Foucault. To organize the speeches and select the corpus of analyze, it was elaborated a discursive mapping using the software ATLAS. Ti 7, Free Trail Version. The findings were submitted to discourse analyses. To discuss the data, the methodological notions of discourse were used, as knowledge, power and govern. The results were presented in three units of analyses: 1) Planning life and death: decide your end! 2) Who teach us to die? 3) Are you prepare to make your vital testament? From the hypothesis of reading, the discursive fields were articulated, such as religious, the legal and the medical, that allow to show the surfaces of emergency of relations of power-knowledge for that the subjects can govern their death. The medical discourse is emphasized as the one which is authorized to talk about this event while the nursing came connected with the body care. It was observed the death in house as biopolitics strategy produced by the State, which achieves legitimacy circulating in magazines pages. The quality of life comes in the time of death as a discipline to be followed or as an objective to be achieved. I conclude that magazines institute what I called curriculum of life end, teaching and spreading the acceptation of end, beyond to evaluate the readers from determinate tools that assess their ability to take decisions, as for example, about the death.

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation aims at helping the understatement of cultural heritage (or patrimony) through the study of its representations (the way cultural history defines them) in a mass media. This works consists in the study of French television programs, aired form the early 1950s to the late 1990s. During this period, in France, television became the media with the biggest audience. Also, the notion of patrimony went through considerable changes, becoming a social phenomenon: and increasing number of French citizens, from all social backgrounds, became interested in heritage. First of all, this work is a study of a subject that was treated in a variety of genres, that became more and more visible over time, and its popularity rises both in and out of the medias. How did the producers and journalists defined patrimony and what did they intend to propose to the audience with it? This work ambitions to better understand the democratization of patrimony in the French society. Was television involved in any way in this change? This media, with its particularities, may have offered a different understanding of the notion, and the representations of patrimony on television may have affected le way viewers see it

Abstract:
My research questions the cultural transfers between France and Italy in the XVIIth century in the respect of choreographic culture, before French belle dance was imposed as the standard reference on a European scale. Placing myself in the line of studies promoted by J. Sasportes and S. Mamone on the understanding the spectacular culture of the modern era beyond national boundaries, I consider that an analysis of the migratory processes of artists during the XVIIth century could help to redefine the emergency of styles as the result of vigorous cultural dialogues. In this sense, the notion of cultural transfer – drawn from the gekreuzte Geschichte (Werner and Zimmerman) – clarifies the kinetic common references between France and Italy within a context of circulation (of people and expertise) and a multiple process of appropriation, configuration, sometimes also resistance to the integration of choretic elements. Following these remarks, I tightened up the study on the rich exchanges between the Republic of Venice and Paris in the culture of dramaturgy and of theatrical and social dance, in a period between 1637 (birth of the Venetian public theatre) and 1728 (publication of Trattato del Ballo Nobile by Dufort). Following the deliberately qualitative and inductive approach of historical anthropology (C. Ginzburg, P. Burke), I looked at the Venetian public theatre and its ballo teatrale (I. Alm) more specifically as a counter-model to the historiographical tradition of French ballet – often erected as the only experience significant at the time. Also, wanting to get rid of the taxonomic categories of "Renaissance", "Baroque" or "ballet de cour" (B. Sparti), I retraced the denominations generated by internal discourses to the art and transmitted by the actors. In addition to probing the traditions and relations of "ballet" and "ballo", the thesis questions the cultural mediations between France and Italy via linguistic borrowing from the French language to the Italian language (E. Kougioumtzoglou-Roucher), even via the borrowing of kinetic units, and driving content of the belle dance to the Italian technical vocabulary. This comparative analysis is accompanied by a work of physical reappropriation of ancient vocabulary, the articulation between theory and practice being at the very heart of the methodology of dance studies

Abstract: The current study linked to the 'State Policies, School Organization and Teachers Formation' Research Line aims to analyse the festive school culture in our schools since it is understood that the study of symbolical aspects contained in the rituals of celebration feasts can help to know elements of school identity and watch important aspects of the structure of a Laical-Brazilian state school.

Research on paternalistic leadership (PL) has been based exclusively on national cultures´ differences. However there are cues that other contextual variables can add to the explanation of this construct. Due to its capacity to influence expectations of individuals in organizations, organizational culture can contribute to fill this gap. To test if organizational culture influences the effectiveness of leadership style, we conducted two experimental studies using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, comparing effects of paternalistic and transformational leadership on followers’ outcomes. Using video clips and vignettes, we found that PL is better related to followers´ outcomes in cultures oriented to people than outcome, and that TL has a better relationship in cultures oriented to innovation than stability. The results suggest that organizational culture helps in explaining PL endorsement, and that further analysis of the influence of this variable to PL can provide a better understanding of the expression of this leadership style in organizations.

Bouhadiba, Lamia. Thesis, Paris 1, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA010560.

Full text
Abstract:
Music requires the intervention of legal rules that come under different matters of law in order to conciliate between the interests of the protagonists of the musical scene - such as composers, performers, producers, media and public - and to guarantee the protection of the musical event. Therefore, the law on literary and artistic property and cultural heritage law figure among the laws that concur to the protection of the musical event, which are approached from the perspective of comparative law. The question formulated here as to the efficiency of the legal rules that apply to music will lead us to elaborate an introspective approach to the musical event - which we perceive as intellectual creation and as an element of cultural heritage - in order to determine its characteristics and requirements. In this context, we will operate a juridical introspection of the musical work and a juridical introspection of musical heritage. By means of conceptual analysis and structural study, the introspective approach of the musical work will provide an opportunity to look into the juridical challenges raised by the particularities of the musical field, involving the extension of the borders of artistic imagination and the impact of technical progress on art. The introspective approach to musical heritage will allow us to underline its heterogeneity and evolutionary character, and to direct our reflection towards the necessary elaboration of strategies for the acquisition and enrichment of this heritage, at the heart of which the notions of citizenship, cultural development and human rights are to be found

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if transformational leadership, motivation, organizational culture, and person-€organization (P-€O) fit predict retention of Black millennials compared to White millennials. This study also determined if transformational leadership mediated the relationship between motivation and retention, if motivation mediated the relationship between P-€O fit and retention, and if P-€O fit mediated the relationship between culture and retention. With the millennial population making up approximately 50% of the workforce by 2020, it is important for organizations to determine which factors are affecting their retention. To predict employee retention, each variable was measured with 5 reliable online surveys. Two theoretical frameworks were used to include P-€O fit, which focused on how organizational values influence behavioral outcomes, and expectancy theory, which focused on motivation, rewards, and behaviors. Seven research questions identified predictions of retention with a participant population of 170 (84 Black and 85 White). There were 7 analyses conducted to include a simple regression, multiple regression, mediation analysis, and independent samples t test. The results determined that all four variables were predictors of retention, P-€O fit and organizational culture were the only 2 variables that affected the Black population more than the White population, motivation and retention affected the White population more than the Black population, and transformational leadership did not have an effect on retention of Black or White millennials. From this study, social change can occur when organizations modify their hiring processes and work environments to suit the needs and goals of Black millennials.

Abstract:
The purpose with this study is to achieve a deeper knowledge and understanding for the perceived importance of using a Person-Organization fit in recruitment. The study also aims to investigate a possible existing organizational culture in an industrial company, and how concistent this culture seems to be throughout the organization. The authors have also tried to gain knowledge on how new employees are indroduced into this culture. The results are based on three group interviews with operational personnel, interviews with two persons from the manegerial group, and interviews with two recruitment firms. The results indicate that a Person-Organization fit is perceived to be important when it comes to some basic values. However, different personalities are more desirable within the investigated organization concerning recruits. Results also indicate that the socialization process, rather than an applied Person-Organization fit, might have a larger significance for a perceived congruence between personal and organizational values.

Els, Elizma. "The relationship between a heteronormative culture and the affective reactions of homosexual employees." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29873.

Full text
Abstract:
Regardless of the changes in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa No. 108. of 1996, in terms of the acceptance of individuals irrespective of their sexual orientation and the prohibiting of discrimination against anyone on the grounds of their sexual orientation, the concept of homosexuality in the workplace is still a relatively unexplored phenomenon in South Africa. Limited research studies focus on the perspectives of homosexual individuals regarding their perception and attitudes towards their working environments. Culture can affect the way in which individuals act due to the dominance of certain behaviours, beliefs, and norms that are accepted as the 'standard' way of living. Within companies, the employees are on average expected to be productive and effective, and to present fruitful behaviour to benefit the organisation. Individuals can also at times be tacitly encouraged to portray images according to the general norm in the organisation, whether or not this image is true to the individuals themselves. This type of accepted standard norms and behaviours are therefore wordlessly conveyed to the employees as the cultural accepted standard in the organisation. Heteronormative cultures are described as the instance when the accepted standard of male and female behaviour is viewed in terms of masculine men and feminine women. Individuals who do not fit these specific descriptions may experience either explicit or implicit discrimination. The reactions that employees can have because of organisational culture are referred to as affective reactions and can have adverse costs for the organisation as employees may engage in less productive behaviour. The purpose of this research was to assess the relationship between a heteronormative culture and the affective reactions of homosexual employees working in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Work engagement and job satisfaction of the individuals were assessed in relationship to heteronormativity. Research done for this study includes the various aspects of the academic topics related to the study. Given the limited amount of empirical research on the topic, a mixed method study was conducted. Quantitative questionnaires instigated the research, designed to measure the following concepts:
  • Organisational culture, in terms of heteronormativity.
  • Two affective reactions of employees - work engagement and job satisfaction.
Explanatory qualitative interviews followed the questionnaires with the intention of understanding the results found during the quantitative phase. A purposefully selected sample of one hundred and sixty four homosexual employees working in Johannesburg and Pretoria completed the quantitative questionnaire, and a sample of eight homosexual individuals were selected out of the original sample to participate in the qualitative interview stage. Previously developed instruments were used to measure heteronormativity, work engagement and job satisfaction. The results indicated that homosexual employees within Gauteng do experience the culture of their respective organisations to support the perceptions of heteronormativity. Two hypotheses were tested which indicated a significant but small correlation between perceptions of heteronormativity and work engagement and job satisfaction. The qualitative results provided insight into how homosexual employees experienced heteronormative cultures in the workplace as well as how they react to the cultures encountered.

Abstract:
The present study explored whether African American women's level of dietary fat intake could be predicted by the variables of food preferences and preparation methods, support for healthy eating from family and friends, attitudes toward health, and acculturation. The present study also explored whether African American women's level of dietary fat intake could be predicted by the variables of food preferences and preparation methods, support for healthy eating from family and friends, and attitudes toward health, as moderated by acculturation.Information was obtained from five hundred and nintey nine African American females between the ages of eighteen and forty four. The women were recruited from a Midwestern univeristy, an undergraduate and graduate chapter of an African American sorority, two African American professional organizations, and through the snowball method. Particpants completed a Demographic Questionnaire, The Eating Behavior Patterns Questionnaire, The African American Acculturation Scale Short Form, The Health Attitudes Scale, The Social Support Scale, and The Eating Patterns Subscale on the Eating Habits Questionnaire. The data was collected via hardcopy and InQsit, an online survey program.Numerous preliminary tests were run to screen the data for outliers, linearity, and multicollinearity. Then, two forced entry multiple regressions were performed. In the first analysis, the overall model was a significant predictor of dietary fat intake. African American women's preferred foods, positive and negative support from friends, overallconcern for health, and intentions to adopt positive health practices are significant predictors of their level of dietary fat intake. In fact, these variables acccounted for almost half of the amount of variance in dietary fat intake. The second model was not significant and acculturation was not a significant predictor or moderator of dietary fat intake. Although acculturation was proven to be influential to dietary behaviors in African Americans in previous literature, the findings were not confirmed in this study.Multiple possibilies may explain the lack of significant findings between level of acculturation and dietary fat intake. The women in the current study were of a higher educational and income status than women in previous studies indicating significant findings. This difference in education and income, among other factors, may account for the difference in significant findings. The information gained in this study can be used to develop pschoeducational and treatment programs aimed at helping African American women prevent or treat health problems associated with poor eating habits. Several research implications are also noted.

Abstract:
At a time when political debates are crystallizing around multiculturalism, fear of globalization and furthermore the recent arrival of migrants in a Europe which is developing a withdrawal into itself, it seems important to restore some historical depth to the exchanges between the various shores of the Mediterranean area. Food as an object of analysis shows how different countries have so much culturally influenced one another that it is difficult today to determine exactly from where does a recipe comes. However, there is still resistance to certain cultural traits of “the Other” and this is reflected in one’s eating habits. This research studies the gastronomic relations between France and Morocco using the cultural transfer paradigm that shows how recipes could or couldn’t cross borders (in the cultural and geographical meaning) and why. Three context typologies have been defined. Colonization causes one of the great "meetings" that have marked the two societies until today given that in a colonial context food is in the center of power relations. The second factor of the "encounter" between those two societies is the the context of international migration. Migrants and immigrants have a role in cultural gastronomic transfers between their origin country and France, especially because it is chosen by many Moroccan migrants to settle in France by opening restaurants. The migrant has a role of innovator in gastronomic matters while we also see evolving the French and European companies practices towards this migration. Briefly, through eating practices, notions of integration, assimilation and acculturation are re-examined. Finally, the research concludes with an overall vision of globalization and Morocco's political will to use its gastronomic resources to position itself on the international stage

Abstract:
In some organizations four generations work together creating a unique culture. Millennials are the second largest generation currently in the workforce. Organizational culture is affected by interpersonal communication. Interviews were conducted with 17 workers between the ages of 19 and 30. Interviews consisted of 22 open-ended questions regarding daily tasks, organized activities, and interpersonal interaction. The perspective of organizational culture was evaluated through personal, task, social, and organizational rituals. Membership categorization was used to determine common vocabulary used to identify with coworkers. Duck's theory on attraction was used to evaluate interpersonal behavior seeking to determine psychological attractors acting as catalysts for relationship building. Data found suggests that Millennials create a culture similar to the tribal example suggested in previous research. Rituals act as forms of cultural dissemination and strengthening. The use of membership categorization devices reflected the structure of the organization and relationships between coworkers. Using Duck's attraction theory, an analysis reflected the identification factors that act as catalysts for relationships. Psychological attraction was linked to common interests.

Abstract:
The Angolan writer Pepetela has in his compose the work O quase fim do mundo (2008), wherein creates conditions for the resumption of humanity from few survivors of a catastrophe, which puts it in the list of eschatological discourses. Its differential, in our view, will be in the discussions raised about the african reality, especially Angola. Thus, there is in novel the formation of a society from mainly African values, since Africa emerges as the central space of the new era the selected individuals are, almost entirely, from this continent, where rebuild their lives and the past that will be leave as History. In parallel, it is possible to relate the story and its elements to the formulation of a new utopia, this time prioritizing characteristics over those imported (unless re-read from the viewpoint location). However, the author knows the complexity of the feat and does not shirk from pointing and discuss barriers. With the book OQFM, Pepetela backs to put in question the direction and projects of his country, placing it in the production aesthetic-political of Angolan literature in Portuguese.
