Abstract:
This study purports to determine the predictors of migrant workers' cultural adaptation in South Korea. In the main, we examined the extent to which the level of inter-/intracultural socializing, exposure to local/native media, and host culture receptivity affect the level of cultural adaptation in cognitive, affective, behavioral domains. Potential impacts of demographic factors (e.g., age, sex, ethnicity, marital status, living alone vs. with family, education level, residency in years, perceived cultural similarity) were also explored. To find answers to the research questions, a total of 634 migrant workers from 37 different nations were reached using a snowball sampling. Surveys were collected in 12 districts of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and 21 adjacent metropolitan areas. Results indicate that intercultural interaction with host people and media exposure to local contents tend to help improve their knowledge about South Korea (e.g., language, culture). With all else equal, migrant workers treated kindly by Koreans at the workplace and in service sectors, and those living with family, compared to those who live alone, tended to enjoy a greater satisfaction with work and life in South Korea and were more willing to stay. Practical implications for Korean policymakers include encouraging competent migrant workers to move together with the family, making administrative efforts to further simplify the documentation process, and initiating public campaigns to raise host culture receptivity among Korean citizens.

Full text
Abstract:
The determinants of cultural consumption are rarely explored by means of travel demand (i.e., travel cost) models. In this paper, the empirical results are presented in regard to the frequency of attendance to cultural events as an indicator of cultural sustainability. Approximately 50% of the respondents who participated in a representative household survey in Austria stated that they would participate in cultural events at least once a year. The average frequency of attendance came to about 3 to 4 times a year, depending on the kind of cultural event (e.g., drama/opera performances, museum visits, concerts in schools of music). The estimations support the notion that the distance from the respondent’s residence to the cultural event is negatively correlated with the frequency of attendance. Other determinants include the typical socio-economic characteristics of respondents (e.g., education, income). However, the availability of cultural infrastructure in urban or rural areas, as well as municipal cultural spending, are the main spatial and public finance variables influencing attendance frequency. Based on the econometric estimations of the travel cost model, the economic value of attending a cultural event (consumer surplus) varies from EUR 38 (cinema) to EUR 55 (theater, opera) on average. The results suggest that local and regional cultural infrastructure are significant contributors to cultural sustainability.

Abstract The current study draws evidence from the Smithsonian Institution while examining a classic agenda-setting hypothesis during a period of 30 years in relation to media attention of the Smithsonian and a behavioral index of public salience, – namely its long-term, monthly visits. Second, it explores a larger theoretical concern often expressed by scholars in terms of the agenda-setting function over two different eras, the analog and the digital media periods.

Abstract:
AbstractThis target article presents a theory of human cultural learning. Cultural learning is identified with those instances of social learning in which intersubjectivity or perspective-taking plays a vital role, both in the original learning process and in the resulting cognitive product. Cultural learning manifests itself in three forms during human ontogeny: imitative learning, instructed learning, and collaborative learning – in that order. Evidence is provided that this progression arises from the developmental ordering of the underlying social-cognitive concepts and processes involved. Imitative learning relies on a concept of intentional agent and involves simple perspective-taking. Instructed learning relies on a concept of mental agent and involves alternating/coordinated perspective-taking (intersubjectivity). Collaborative learning relies on a concept of reflective agent and involves integrated perspective-taking (reflective intersubjectivity). A comparison of normal children, autistic children and wild and enculturated chimpanzees provides further evidence for these correlations between social cognition and cultural learning. Cultural learning is a uniquely human form of social learning that allows for a fidelity of transmission of behaviors and information among conspecifics not possible in other forms of social learning, thereby providing the psychological basis for cultural evolution.

Abstract:
The most significant and most obvious factor behind the growth of ethnic and cultural diversity in Nepal, is of course, the country’s multilingual context. Multicultural context, in turn, reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity, and social thinking of the period during which the context came into existence. We can argue that cultural and ethnic diversity has always been a source of strength and unity in Nepali society. This article addresses the ethnic and cultural diversity of the Puma people. The future of Nepal will be even more ethnically and culturally diverse than it is today.

Abstract:
Bourdieu's theory of cultural reproduction has been interpreted in various ways, and several authors have criticised an overly narrow interpretation of cultural capital as simply consisting of ‘beaux arts’ participation. For researchers, this raises the challenge of developing a broader interpretation of cultural capital which is still specific enough to be operationalised. This paper discusses the ways in which parents may transmit educational advantage to their children through cultural rather than economic means, and the forms of knowledge and skill which may be considered as ‘cultural capital’. An operationalisation of cultural knowledge is discussed, and empirical evidence is presented on differences in levels of cultural knowledge between the children of graduates and non-graduates.
