Abstract:
This thesis explores the major themes of William Cullen Bryant's poetry. Chapter II focuses on Bryant's poetic theory and secondary criticism of his theory. Chapter III addresses Bryant's religious beliefs, including death and immortality of the soul, and shows how these beliefs are illustrated by his poetry. A discussion of the American Indian is the subject of Chapter IV, concentrating on Bryant's use of the Indian as a Romantic ideal as well as his more realistic treatment of the Indian in The New York Evening Post. Chapter V, the keystone chapter, discusses Bryant's scientific knowledge and poetic use of natural phenomena. Bryant's religious beliefs and his belief in nature as a teacher are also covered in this chapter.

Abstract:
Notre travail traite une problématique complexe, celle des cultes indigènes anatoliens des principales divinités solaires et lunaires dans un espace culturel très vaste sur le territoire de l'Empire romain, le long du processus d'hellénisation des régions. Les trois types de sphères culturelles ont eu un grand apport à la définition d'un cadre religieux plurivalent et multiculturel dynamique. Parmi les aspects pris en considération dans notre analyse on compte les transformations iconographiques et morpho-fonctionnelles des divinités, ainsi que l'identification des séquences évolutives dans les différents milieux ethnoculturels, l'accent étant mis sur deux des plus importants phénomènes concernant les adaptations culturelles : le polymorphisme et la polyonymie. A part les questions concernant la nature des divinités abordées (origine du nom et de la divinité elle-même, aire de diffusion du culte, épithètes, fonctions, équivalences, mythes et divinités associées, symbolisme et iconographie), on traite des questions concernant l'organisation et la vie économique des temples, la nature des sacerdoces et des dévots, les modalités d'association, l'âge et les relations de parenté dans le milieu sacré. Enfin, la dernière partie analyse des changements qui ont eu lieu le long de la période prise en considération, changements qui visent la perception des divinités par les dévots, la réceptivité des dieux envers les demandes et prières des dévots, la communication entre divinités et êtres humains (par des visions oniriques, par des ordres divins, par des épiphanies, et par des oracles), aussi que de l'hiérarchisation du monde divin
Our work treat a complex issue, that of the indigenous Anatolian cults of the main solar and lunar gods in a very large hellenising geographical area, within the limits of the Roman Empire. These three cultural spheres thoroughly contributed to the mergence of a ongoing dynamic plurivalent and multicultural religious background. Among the aspects tanken into account in our analysis we can mention the iconographic and morpho-functional transformations of the deities, as well as their identification of the evolutive sequences within different ethnocultural background, stressing on two important phenomena related to the cultural adaptations : the polymorphism and the polyonymy. Besides the questions concerning the nature of the approached divinities (origin of the name and the god itself, cult diffusion area, epithets, functions, equivalences, myths and associated deities, symbolism and iconography), we treat issues regarding the organization and the economic life of the temples, the nature of the priesthoods and the worshippers, their means of association, age and kinship relations in the sacred environment. Finally, the last part analyses the religious alterations which occured in this specific periode on the worshippers perception over the divinities, gods receptivity of the worshippers requests, communication between deities and humans (through oniric visions, divine commands, epiphanies, and oracles), as well as the hierarchisation of the divine world

La France est une République laïque, elle garantit la liberté de conscience et le libre exercice du culte sous les réserves tenant à l'ordre public et à la protection des libertés d'autrui. Ainsi, la laïcité est un principe de notre République et la liberté cultuelle est une assise essentielle de toute démocratie. Dès lors, l'existence de rapports entre la laïcité et les cultes en France ne peut être remise en cause. Cependant, la France est marquée par un regain d'engouement de ses citoyens pour des croyances cultuelles. Légitimement, ces croyances cultuelles s'extériorisent au sein des domaines public et social. Cette extériorisation n'est pas toujours apaisée, elle entraine de vives incompréhensions voire une remise en cause du principe de laïcité. Un certain apaisement a vu le jour, sous l'impulsion de la Haute juridiction administrative et cette œuvre doit encore être poursuivie. Actuellement, certains domaines juridiques sont marqués par un embrasement entre le droit laïc et les cultes. Certes, sur certains sujets, il est toujours malaisé de s'immiscer au sein du for intérieur des individus, et le législateur ainsi que les pouvoirs publics semblent incommodés par ce problème. Pourtant, eu égard à la multiplication des conflits d'ordre cultuel et à l'apparition d'une certaine radicalisation, le législateur et les pouvoirs publics ont le devoir d'intervenir afin de rétablir un apaisement dans les rapports entre la laïcité et les cultes
France is a "laïc" Republic, which garantees the right to freedom of conscience and the right to freedom of religion, provided public order and citizens rights and freedoms are protected. Thus, "la laïcité” is a principle of our Republic and religious freedom is an essential basis for any democracy. Therefore, the links which exist between "la laïcité" and religions in France can not be questionned. Besides, France is faced with a revival of religious beliefs and a renewed interest in religious matters.These religious beliefs are legitimately expressed in the public and social spheres. However, the way they are expressed is not always peaceful, it causes deep misunderstandings even a challenge to “laïcité”. Under the guidance of the High administrative jurisdiction there are signs of a will to calm things down, and we must continue this way. Nowadays, in some fields of the legal framework there are clashes between law, based on neutrality, and religions. As far as some subjects are concerned, interfering in people's conscience and inner self is certainly not easy and law makers and the authorities seem to feel uncomfortable faced with this problem. Yet, given the increasing number of conflicts involving law and religions and the emergence of more radical positions, law makers and the authorities have to get involved and interfere so as to restore a more peaceful relation between "laïcité" and religions

Finely ground glass has the potential for pozzolanic reactivity and can serve as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). Glass reaction kinetics depends on both temperature and glass composition. Uniform composition, amorphous nature, and high silica content of glass make ground glass an ideal material for studying the effects of glass type and particle size on reactivity at different temperature. This study focuses on how three narrow size ranges of clear and green glass cullet, 63–75 [mu]m, 25–38 [mu]m, and smaller than 25 [mu]m, as well as combination of glass types and particle sizes affects the microstructure and performance properties of cementitious systems containing glass cullet as a SCM. Isothermal calorimetry, chemical shrinkage, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), quantitative analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and analysis of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images in backscattered (BS) mode were used to quantify the cement reaction kinetics and microstructure. Additionally, compressive strength and water sorptivity experiments were performed on mortar samples to correlate reactivity of cementitious materials containing glass to the performance of cementitious mixtures. A recently-developed modeling platform called “[mu]ic the model” was used to simulated pozzolanic reactivity of single type and fraction size and combined types and particle sizes of finely ground glass. Results showed that ground glass exhibits pozzolanic properties, especially when particles of clear and green glass below 25 [mu]m and their combination were used at elevated temperatures, reflecting that glass cullet is a temperature-sensitive SCM. Moreover, glass composition was seen to have a large impact on reactivity. In this study, green glass showed higher reactivity than clear glass. Results also revealed that the simultaneous effect of sizes and types of glass cullet (surface area) on the degree of hydration of glass particles can be accounted for through a linear addition, reflecting that the surface area would significantly affect glass cullet reactivity and that the effects of SCM material interaction on reaction kinetics were minimal. However, mechanical properties of cementitious systems containing combined glass types and sizes behaved differently, as they followed the weaker portion of the two particles. This behavior was attributed to the pores sizes, distruibution, and connectiity. Simulations of combined glass types and sizes showed that more work on microstructural models is needed to properly model the reactivity of mixed glass particle systems.

Denna kandidatuppsats utgör en komparativ studie av två vampyrkaraktärer, greve Dracula och Edward Cullen, utifrån Bram Stokers Dracula (1993) och Stephenie Meyers första roman i Twilightsagan, Twilight (2007). Jag vill försöka klargöra förändringar i skildringarna av vampyrkaraktärerna genom att jämföra hur dem skildras när det gäller utseende, liv samt beteende och handling och därefter finna likheter och skillnader vampyrkaraktärerna emellan utifrån dessa aspekter. Den komparativa studien bygger huvudsakligen på närläsning av romanerna eftersom jag endast ägnar mig åt att studera hur vampyrkaraktärerna skildras. Resultatet visar att det finns såväl likheter som skillnader när det gäller skildringarna av greve Dracula och Edward. Skildringarna av Dracula som en monstervampyr har förändrats, gått förlorade och likaledes bevarats när det gäller skildringarna av Edward som humanvampyr.

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series has reached huge popularity among young adults and as a futureteacher I am concerned about what kind of a message these books send to teenagers. In this essay I arguethat the main character of the book, Edward Cullen, shows signs of an abusive personality and that thesesigns have been romanticized and idealized by the author. I also argue that the fans of Twilight haveromanticized Edward's behavior. I accomplish this by a close reading of the series and other relevantliterature. Edward has the following signs that an abusive person has: jealousy, controlling behavior,quick involvement, isolation, sudden mood changes, threats of violence and force during an argument.These signs the author has romanticized with the imagery that can be found in the books. Also, Meyerportrays Edward as better than everyone else and by doing so she idealizes his character. Edward'sabusive behavior has been interpreted as actions of true love by fans making these patterns of abusivebehavior seem romantic.

Cette étude se propose d’aborder la question de la dénomination divine en Grèce antique à travers le phénomène de l’épiclèse. Elle prend pour cadre géographique les cités ioniennes et leurs colonies en Propontide et en Mer Noire, et envisage le phénomène dans la diachronie, partant de la période archaïque et allant jusqu’à la fin du IIIe siècle ap. J. -C. Les épiclèses ont été collectées dans les documents épigraphiques, les témoignages littéraires et les sources numismatiques. Face aux difficultés d’interprétation posées par une grande partie d’entre elles, on se propose de clarifier le sens des exemples collectés ici au travers d’une étude morphologique, laquelle permet par ailleurs une classification objective. Les épiclèses sont ensuite replacées dans la réalité du culte, d’abord à travers une approche centrée sur la figure divine, puis dans une perspective panthéonique. L’objectif est de comprendre dans quelle mesure les épiclèses orientent les compétences de la divinité et illustrent les interactions entre les dieux au sein d’un panthéon local. Une attention particulière est portée au panthéon de Milet et à ses configurations dans les colonies milésiennes du Pont. Le transfert entre métropole et colonie offre ainsi une grille de lecture pertinente pour appréhender la façon dont une communauté s’approprie une divinité en fonction de besoins spécifiques. This study looks at the way the ancient Greeks named their gods, through the notion of epiklesis. It focuses more precisely on the cities of Ionia and their colonies in the Propontis and the Black Sea and proposes a diachronic approach of the phenomenon, which runs from the archaic period to the late-3rd century AD. The epikleseis which are studied here were collected in epigraphical, literary and numismatic sources. Because epikleseis often raise difficulties as regards their signification, I propose to elucidate the meaning of the examples gathered here through a careful analysis of their morphology, which I consequently use as a tool for classification. I also try to put the epiklêseis back in their ritual context, by the means both of a deity- and a pantheon-focused approach. This way, I intend to show how epikleseis contribute to define the faculties of the deity and reflect interactions betweens gods inside local pantheons. Special attention is devoted to the case of Miletus pantheon and its configurations in Milesian colonies of the Pontus. The transfer from the metropolis to the colony gives valuable insights into the process through which a community adopts a deity in order to satisfy specific needs. Because it allows men to invoke, to reactivate or even to create specific facets of the gods, the epiklesis constitute a fundamental aspect of the Greek polytheism

Parmi les dieux du Panthéon grec, la déesse Athéna a toujours eu un rôle très important dû, surtout, a son caractère de protectrice des cités. Or, celui-ci n'est qu'un de ses aspects car, sous une iconographie très répandue de divinité guerrière, elle cache une nature très complexe et, parfois, contradictoire. Dans le cas de l'Asie Mineure, Athéna se présente à nos yeux comme une divinité duelle suivant les traces des déesses anatoliennes et proche orientales : elle est au même temps protectrice du monde féminin et de tout ce que cela implique et du monde civique (incluant la guerre bien sûr). Cette double nature présente depuis les débuts ( VIII siècle av. C. ) jusqu'au IV siècle ap. C. (derniers témoignages) évolue, cependant, dans le temps et l'espace. Il faut donc, tenir compte de l'évolution historique des différentes régions pour comprendre celle du culte car la religion n'est qu'une partie de la culture et la civilisation grecques. Bien-qu'elle soit une déesse il y a de la diversité dans l'unité et cela justifie que nous pouvons parler de cultes en pluriel plutôt que de culte en singulier
The Goddess Athena is one of the most important deities of the Greek Pantheon because she has a main role as protector of cities. Thus, Athena has other roles often hidden under a warrior role and iconography. In Minor Asia we see Athena as protector of civic activity as well as protector of feminine activity just like the Anatolic and Near Oriental deities. And this role is known to VIII B. C. Until IV A. Les recherches récentes ont tenté une nouvelle approche du concept de " religions orientales", mis en relief par Franz Cumont dans Les religions orientales dans le paganisme romain. Tout au long de ce processus de déconstruction de l'idée des «religions orientales», on remarque l'absence d'une relecture approfondie des écrits chrétiens. Il est primordial de comprendre l'apport des sources chrétiennes dans l'établissement et l'élaboration de cette nouvelle perspective. La relecture des écrits de Tertullien est d'autant plus nécessaire qu'il a joué un rôle dans les théories établies par Cumont qui définissait le culte mithriaque comme le rival du christianisme. et les "cultes orientaux" deviennent sous sa plume le missing link entre paganisme et christianisme. Tertullien écrit à une époque charnière de l'histoire du christianisme : celle de la construction et de l'expression de l'identité chrétienne. Le polémiste a recours à Cybèle, aux dieux isiaques et à Mithra dans ses traités apologétiques et antihérétiques. Cette étude propose une relecture des lignes "orientales" de l'oeuvre de Tertullien à la lumière du contexte polémique, rhétorique et identitaire de ses traités. Pour mieux appréhender le rôle qu'il attribue à ses divinités, il est nécessaire de dépouiller ces passages, de démonter l'argumentation de Tertullien et de s'imprégner de la dialectique chrétienne pour saisir les rouages de la pensée de l'apologète. La construction binaire et antithétique de ses ouvrages nous permet d'évaluer la vision chrétienne des rapports religieux et de comprendre la place des dieux "orientaux" dans la définition chrétienne de l' "autre", en opposition à la nouvelle religio
Research attempts to conceptualize a new approach to the "religions orientales" advanced by Franz Cumont in his book Les religions orientales dans le paganisme romain. It is necessary to understand what the contribution of the study of Christian sources to the establishment and development of this new perspective and a redefinition of the so-Called oriental gods is. This re-Reading of Tertullian is necessary due to the role of Cumont's theories : the scholar defined the Mithraic cult as the rival of Christianity. The "oriental religions" in his writings represent the missing link between paganism and Christianity. Tertullian wrote during a turning point in Christian history when the identity of Christianity was being established. The polemicist often uses Cybele, the deities of the gens Isiac and Mithras in his apologetic and anti-Heretical treaties. This study proposes a re-Reading of the "oriental" in the works of the polemicist, taking into consideration the polemic and rhetoric and the concept of identity in his treaties. In order to understand the role reserved by the author for the deities that were so important to Cumont, it is necessary to analyse these passages, collect the controversial issues behind each citation of the Magna Mater, Isis and Mithras, and deconstruct the arguments of Tertullian, in the light of Christian dialectic to comprehend the workings of the apologist's mind. Similarly,the binary and antithetical construction of the works of Tertullian allow us to assess the Christian vision of religious relationship and understand the place of the so-Called Oriental gods in the Christian definition of the "other" in opposition to the new religio

Cette recherche est axée sur l'analyse des faits religieux, anciens et contemporains, chez les Peda du sud du Togo. Elle a pour objectif d'étudier le système religieux traditionnel Peda, tel qui'il se présente aujourd'hui à travers les rites, croyances, symboles et conduites des acteurs religieux. Son ambition est d'expliquer la cohérence et la permanence de ce système et son impact sur les représentations culturelles et les pratiques sociales. Elle souhaite aussi mettre en évidence l'évolution des croyances et pratiques religieuses des Peda depuis l'avénement du christianisme au Togo, montrer les influences réciproques entre la religion traditionnelle et le christianisme et exposer l'apparition des nouveaux mouvements religieux. L'adoption du christianisme après la colonisation, motivée par une idéologie de progrès calquée sur celle de l'Occident contraint les Peda à se tourner vers des institutions sociales inadaptées à leur spiritualité. Du décalage entre l'attachement à une philosophie de la vie héritée de l'ancestralité et l'aliénation produite par l'évangélisation sont nés de nouveaux comportements religieux. Et la perte d'emprise de la religion traditionnelle sur une partie de la société s'est accentuée, s'accompagnant d'une religiosité flottante. As an approach to mitigate the harmful effects of Urban Heat Island (UHI), the use of glass cullet in the production of asphalt roof shingles has the potential to be employed as a cool roof strategy. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the use of recycled glass increases solar reflectance index (SRI) without affecting the performance of asphalt roof shingles. In order to evaluate the feasibility of recycled glass for alternative uses, the engineering properties of glass cullet were investigated and compared to conventional aggregates used in the production of asphalt roof shingles. Laboratory samples were then prepared in order to measure solar reflectance properties and strength performance of conventional and recycled glass roof shingles. It is shown that while the use of recycled glass as a replacement to standard ceramic coated black roofing granules on the top surface of asphalt shingles results in an increased SRI, the addition of white pigment powder (anatase ultra fine particles passing mesh #320) mixed together and applied with the surface granules improves reflectance values to meet the cool roof threshold.

L'analyse du texte de Carson Mc Cullers permet de mettre à jour les signifiants majeurs qui constituent la structure symbolique de son oeuvre. Le déchiffrage du signifiant nous fait accéder à la dialectique du désir et de l'aliénation qui soutend l'univers imaginaire de l'écrivain. This study is concerned with the work of Carson Mc Cullers, a writer of the south of the United Staes, and more specifically with her novels published between 1940 and 1961. Carson Mc Cullers became famous at the age of twenty-three. Her writings, which are both painful and provocative, continue to raise questions that remain unanswered. The textual analysis of Carson Mc Cullers' novels bring to light the major signifiers which constitute the symbolic strucutre of her imaginative creation. Deciphering these signifiers leads us to the dialectic of desire and alienation which underlies her writing. Such a reading disclose the immutable conflict between the singular desire of the individual and the imperative demands of symbolic law. The act of writing and the work produced are both part of a process whose aims is to shed light on the absurdity of existence and to define the indefinable in "the real". Thereby, the writer escapes from the narcissistic regression that places on obstacle in the way of progress and truth

It discusses the works in the offices, especially this in charge of the "edifices diocesains", responsible of the maintenance of the cathedrals, episcopal buildings and priesthood colleges. Este es el estudio de un conjunto de adoratorios andinos dentro del ámbito cultural de Pashas-Cabana (Pallasca-Ancash). El propósito es mostrar la simbología y la supervivencia de algunos rasgos culturales y lingüísticos del culle. En las prácticas culturales de tipo ritual y de la vida cotidiana aparecen entremezcladas formas bastante antiguas, muchas de las cuales continúan siendo rasgos pertenecientes al culle, cultura preincaica, indicando así la supervivencia de esta cultura. Así mismo, los términos culle que conforman el léxico toponímico constituyen elementos simbólicos de supervivencia de esta sociedad. Para la parte cultural se hace una revisión de fuentes arqueológicas y etnohistóricas, y luego se contrasta los datos hallados con aquellos obtenidos a través de la etnografía antropológica. Para la parte lingüística se hace referencia a 36 adoratorios andinos, registrados por los extirpadores de idolatrías y encontrados en el Archivo Parroquial de Cabana y además a otros adoratorios importantes vigentes, no advertidos por estos sacerdotes. Se analizan y contrastan conceptos básicos de la religión andina y cristiana. Luego se muestra la simbología del poder de la cultura urbana moderna, desplegada en la cuidad y la resistencia cultural andina procedente de las áreas rurales. Finalmente, se da cuenta de algunos rasgos culturales y de topónimos vigentes que indican la supervivencia de la sociedad culle, a pesar de una arrollante imposición incaica y de una depredadora e intolerante actitud hispana, en su afán de aniquilar la cultura y lengua de esta sociedad e imponer la suya para lograr establecer el cristianismo en la zona.

Como em outros mosquitos, os trofócitos do corpo gorduroso de Cx. quinquefasciatus sintetizam vitelogenina (Vg), principal proteína armazenada pelo ovócito, formada por duas subunidades de 200 e 86 kDa. A ultraestrutura dos trofócitos revela o rápido desenvolvimento da maquinaria biossintética após a alimentação com sangue (aa) e a consecutiva degradação após as 48 h aa. Antes do repasto (AR), um conjunto de células indiferenciadas, limitado pelo epitélio folicular, conforma os folículos ovarianos. Após AR, o ovócito se destaca pelo acúmulo de lipídeos e Vg. O receptor de vitelogenina é encontrado somente nos ovários e análise por PCR em tempos mostrou aumento dos transcritos nos primeiros cinco dias após emersão e nas primeiras 48 h aa, durante a vitelogênese. O perfil transcricional de Vg mostrou um pico no terceiro dia de vida adulta e ao final do processo ovogênico
As in other mosquitoes, fat body trophocytes of Cx. quinquefasciatus synthesize vitellogenin (Vg), the major yolk protein stored by the oocyte, formed by two subunits of 200 and 86 kDa. The trophocytes ultrastructure reveals the rapid development of the biosynthetic machinery and the consecutive degradation around 48 h post blood meal (PBM). Before blood meal, a set of undifferentiated cells limited by follicular epithelium, conform the ovarian follicles. After blood meal, the oocyte is remarkable by accumulation of lipid inclusions and yolk granules. Vitellogenin receptors (rVitCx), are localized exclusively in the ovaries and real time PCR showed transcripts increase at the first five days after emergence (AE), and at the first 48 h PBM, during oogenesis. Vg transcripts profile showed a peak on the third day AE and at the end of the vitellogenic process

Analysis of the geographical and social distribution of the testimonies of the cult, all over Africa, shows first a diminishing veneration away from its centers of influence, that is to say the region of Carthage and Lambaesis. It let appear, secondly, many aspects of Aesculapius. In proconsularis, the god is sometimes that of Epidaure and of the Tiberin Island, and sometimes the imported god who has been transplanted on a local healing deity, either Libyan or Punic, worshipped alone or with Caelestis; in baths and watering places of the same province, he's been worshipped with Hygieia. The increasing number of forms of conquest in the frech political, social and mental space symbolize a way of life and norms of comportment in regard to competition. What are the meanings of these news representations of society and individual? which of liable hypothsesis could render an account? those are the two questions this thesis try to answer, through the analysis of change of statut of the competitive sport, the mass consumption and of the economic competition, which form those three parts of this inquiry. Two interdependant hypothesis explain these changes : a new definition of action urging individual on being visible ; an inflexion in sensitiveness balance that make justice the result of competition. Abstract:
This is a study of Dr. William Cullen (1710-1790), the Scottish chemist, physician, and professor of medicine, who played a significant role in the Scottish Enlightenment. I argue that Cullen was both a more unorthodox figure in Scottish medicine than he is generally depicted, as well as a more ambitious one. Despite his controversial doctrines, he skillfully managed the hierarchy of his profession and reached the pinnacle of success as a learned physician in the Scottish Enlightenment. I explore Cullen’s life and thought from different angles. I explicate his pedagogical persona and philosophy of medicine, both of which shaped the experiences of his pupils. I show how his neurophysiology was rooted in his contentious interpretation of the nature of the nervous fluid. And I provide a detailed look at Cullen’s understanding of hygiene, or the art of health—a rarely-studied component of his practice of medicine.

This essay examines large-scale cultural developments in Peru’s north central highlands during the 1st millennium AD, with an emphasis on their implications for ancient language use and spread. Áncash is of special interest because of its long history of research, central geographic position in northern Perú, diversity in archaeological cultures, and the presence of a series of languages, many now extinct. During the 1st millennium, cultural interaction between north highland groups and their neighbors was very prominent during the beginning and the end of the Early Intermediate Period. The end of the Middle Horizon also saw intensive interaction and cultural transformations. The paper ends with a trial, interdisciplinary study to examine the archaeological traces of the Culle language. It compares the distributions of material artifacts, architecture and toponyms of archaeological sites, and finds there is a reasonable, if imperfect, fit between the data.
En el presente trabajo se analizan los desarrollos culturales de gran escala en la sierra norcentral del Peru durante el primer milenio d.C., con énfasis en sus implicancias para el uso y dispersión de las lenguas antiguas. La región de Áncash es de un interés especial debido a su larga historia de investigaciones, su ubicación geográfica, la diversidad en las culturas arqueológicas y la presencia de una serie de lenguas, muchas de ellas hoy extintas. En esa etapa, específicamente entre el inicio y el final del Periodo Intermedio Temprano, la interacción cultural entre los grupos de la sierra norte y sus vecinos fue muy importante. El término del Horizonte Medio también fue testigo de una interacción intensiva y transformaciones culturales. Esta contribución concluye con un ensayo interdisciplinario con el objeto de examinar los rasgos arqueológicos de la lengua culle. Se comparan las distribuciones de artefactos materiales, arquitectura y topónimos de sitios arqueológicos y se ha logrado determinar que hay una correspondencia razonable, si bien imperfecta, entre los datos.

A right to housing is a central iteration of the broader demand for a democratic right to the city. The perpetual housing crisis for lower-income people results from a commodified system in which access to housing is based on the exchange value interests of property owners, rather than a universal right to a decent, affordable home. This system is a pillar of neoliberal urban governance and justified by a hegemonic ideology that equates speculative homeownership with the American Dream. Achieving a right to housing, even at the local scale, requires a radical movement that cultivates individual and collective consciousness, discredits the dominant ideology, and fights for decommodification. In recent years, grassroots organizing in the Cully neighborhood of Portland, OR, has resisted gentrification and contributed to local housing policy victories. As an activist research project, a survey of existing housing advocates tests the framework of housing consciousness and interest groups developed by John Emmeus Davis (1991), and explores the potential for a radical housing movement in Cully. Across lines of housing tenure, respondents widely agree with a right to housing in the abstract, recognize unjust outcomes of the existing system, and support policies that prioritize housing rights over property rights. Yet many are skeptical of interventions specifically in the homeownership system, and express limited or contradictory understandings of the structural underpinnings of housing injustice.

Introdução - Culex quinquefasciatus é um mosquito sinantrópico que causa incômodo à população humana e é relacionado com a transmissão de nematóides ou arbovírus em áreas endêmicas, respectivamente, do litoral brasileiro e da América Central ou do Norte. Culex nigripalpus é um mosquito hemi-sinantrópico que possui a capacidade de se dispersar para as áreas antrópicas e transmitir Saint Louis Virus e Equine Encephalitis Virus, respectivamente, na América do Norte e Venezuela. Objetivo - Caracterizar o hábito alimentar de Culex nigripalpus e a densidade, a sobrevivência e o hábito alimentar de Culex quinquefasciatus no Parque Ecológico do Tietê (PET), São Paulo. Métodos - O PET é uma Área de Preservação Ambiental com animais residentes ou migratórios. As amostras de mosquitos adultos foram coletadas, mensalmente, em quatro áreas no PET, durante um ano e por meio de aspirador à bateria. O método de ELISA indireto foi empregado para a identificação do hospedeiro que é fonte alimentar ao mosquito. A densidade da população de Cx. quinquefasciatus foi estimada pelo método de marcação, soltura e recaptura na vegetação da margem de um canal no PET. Amostras de fêmeas de Cx. quinquefasciatus desse local foram dissecadas ou acompanhadas em laboratório para estimativa da taxa de sobrevivência. Resultados – A proporção de repastos sangüíneos de Cx. quinquefasciatus e de Cx. nigripalpus foi, respectivamente, 6,5 e 8,3% em humanos, 18,8 e 27,7% em cães, 7,4 e 2,3% em galinhas, 2,8 e 9,0% em ratos, 3,2 e 8,3% em múltiplos hospedeiros e 67,7 e 60,9% em hospedeiros não identificados. Human Blood Index para Cx. quinquefasciatus e Cx. nigripalpus foi, respectivamente, 0,20 e 0,17. Feeding Index entre os hospedeiros homem/cão, homem/galinha e homem/rato foi, respectivamente, 0,35, 0,63 e 2,65 para Cx. quinquefasciatus e 0,30, 2,56 e 1,05 para Cx. nigripalpus. A distribuição de repastos sangüíneos teve associação significante estatisticamente com as fêmeas de Cx. nigripalpus em estádio de Sella 2 coletadas em todas as áreas do PET. A densidade de Cx. quinquefasciatus para uma área de 2.520 m2 foi 7.262±1.537. A proporção de paridas, a duração do ciclo gonotrófico e a taxa de sobrevivência foram, respectivamente, igual a 0,48, 4,75 (CL 95% = 4,3-5,2) e 0,86, estimados para a população de Cx. quinquefasciatus. Conclusões – Cães e galinhas foram hospedeiros importantes para Cx. quinquefasciatus, enquanto que cães foram hospedeiros importantes para Cx. nigripalpus. O repasto sangüíneo é mais bem detectado pelo ELISA indireto em fêmeas no estádio de Sella 2. A sobrevivência e a densidade de Cx. quinquefasciatus indicam que essa espécie é epidemiologicamente relevante na área do PET como espécies vetora ou peste urbana. Essa espécie deve ser objetivo do programa de controle de vetores no município de São Paulo.
Introduction - Culex quinquefasciatus has high synanthropy, infest human dwellings and is vector of nematoids and arbovirus from endemic areas, respectively, in Brazilian coast and in Central or North America. Culex nigripalpus has average synanthropy and can disperse through the anthropic environment carrying Saint Louis Virus and Equine Encephalitis Virus, respectively, in North America and Venezuela. Objective - To characterize host-feeding habit of Culex nigripalpus and density, survival and host-feeding habit of Culex quinquefasciatus in the Parque Ecológico do Tietê (PET), São Paulo. Methods - The PET is an Area of Environmental Protection with resident or migratory animals. The samples of adult mosquitoes were collected, monthly, in four areas in the PET, during one year and by means of a backpack battery aspirator. An indirect ELISA technique was used for the identification of the host that is an alimentary source for the mosquito species. The density of Cx. quinquefasciatus population was estimated using the Mark, Release and Recapture method on the vegetation of the edge of a canal in the PET. Samples of females of Cx. quinquefasciatus from this place were dissected or followed in laboratory for estimating the survival rate. Results – Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. nigripalpus fed on human 6.5 and 8.3%, dog 18.8 and 27.7%, chicken 7.4 and 2.3%, rat 2.8 and 9.0%, multiple hosts 3.2 and 8.2% and unidentified hosts 67.9 and 60.9%, respectively. The unweighted human blood index (HBI) values were 0.20 for Cx. quinquefasciatus and 0.17 for Cx. nigripalpus populations. The feeding index values between the hosts human/dog, human/chicken and human/rat were, respectively, 0.35, 0.63 and 2.65 for Cx. quinquefasciatus and 0.30, 2.56 and 1.05 for Cx. nigripalpus. The distributions of blood-meals had statistically significant association on Sella 2 stage of the Cx. nigripalpus collected in all areas at the PET. The density of Cx. quinquefasciatus for an area of 2,520 m2 was 7,262±1,537. The proportion of parous, gonotrophic cycle length and survival rate were, respectively, equal to 0.48, 4.75 (CL 95% = 4.3-5.2) and 0.86, for Cx. quinquefasciatus population. Conclusions – Dogs and chickens are important hosts for Cx. quinquefasciatus, whereas dog is an important host for Cx. nigripalpus. The host-blood of females in Sella 2 stage increases sensibility of the indirect ELISA assay. The survivorship and the density of Cx. quinquefasciatus indicate that these species are epidemiologically relevant in the PET area as either a pest or vector species. Those species should be a goal of the vector control program of Sao Paulo municipality.

Abstract:
Apesar de Culex quinquefasciatus ser um eficiente vetor de doenças tais como a filariose linfática, febre do Nilo Ocidental e outras várias neuroviroses, poucas pesquisas sobre sua fisiologia têm sido conduzidas. Como em todos os animais ovíparos, o desenvolvimento embrionário dos mosquitos depende da degradação dos nutrientes armazenados no ovo, sendo a catepsina B uma protease que tem sido identificada e caracterizada em vários insetos como envolvida nesta função. Neste trabalho identificamos, por espectrometria de massas, duas catepsinas B de Culex quinquefasciatus, parcialmente purificadas por autoproteólise de extrato total de ovos. Segundo a anotação de suas sequências no banco de dados específico para vetores, o VectorBase, elas são enzimas parálogas e suas sequências apresentam 77% de homologia. Denominadas neste trabalho como CatB1 e CatB2, ambas são expressas simultaneamente no corpo gorduroso de todas as fêmeas vitelogênicas de nossa colônia e sua atividade pode ser detectada nos ovários vitelogênicos, sugerindo sua origem materna. A transcrição de ambas as enzimas se inicia após o repasto sanguíneo (ARS), alcançando o pico de expressão às 36 h ARS, de forma bastante semelhante à da vitelogenina.
Despite Culex quinquefasciatus be an efficient vector of diseases such as lymphatic filariasis, West Nile fever and other various neurotrophic viruses, little research on its physiology have been conducted. As in all oviparous animals, embryonic development of mosquitoes depends on the degradation of the nutrients stored in the egg. Cathepsin B is a protease that has been identified and characterized in a number of insects as involved in this function. In this work we have identified, by mass spectrometry, two cathepsins B of Culex quinquefasciatus, partially purified by self-proteolysis of total egg extract. According to the annotation of their sequences in the specific vector database, the VectorBase, they are paralogue enzymes and their sequences have 77% homology. Named in this work as CatB1 and CatB2, both are expressed simultaneously in the fat body of all vitellogenic females of our colony and its activity can be detected in vitellogenic ovaries, suggesting a maternal origin. The transcription of both enzymes starts post blood meal (PBM), reaching their peak of expression at 36 h PBM, quite similar to vitellogenin.

Abstract:
O mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus é considerado praga urbana e tem a capacidade de se desenvolver em águas altamente poluídas atingindo elevada densidade. Mosquitos desta espécie possuem importância vetorial na transmissão de parasitas e arboviroses. Medidas de controle químico têm se mostrado ineficazes, além de serem altamente prejudiciais ao meio ambiente. Desse modo, novas tecnologias de controle foram desenvolvidas, entre elas o SIT (Sterile Insect Technique) que utiliza radiação para esterilizar machos e liberá-los no ambiente para copular com fêmeas selvagens. Posteriormente métodos genéticos baseados nessa técnica têm sido propostos. O sistema RIDL (Liberação de Insetos Carregando Gene Letal Dominante), consiste na integração de um gene letal dominante associado a um promotor específico de fêmea, dispensando a etapa de esterilização por radiação. Nesse processo os insetos recebem dieta suplementada com um repressor químico. A expressão do gene letal dominante é mantida desligada enquanto este repressor é adicionado ao meio das larvas. Para as amostras que estariam sendo preparadas para liberação, o repressor é retirado, e o gene letal dominante é ativado, causando a morte de todas as fêmeas, restando apenas machos para liberação. Os machos homozigotos para o gene letal seriam liberados para copular com fêmeas selvagens. A progênie seria heterozigota para o gene letal, porém somente os machos sobreviveriam. Parte crucial para o sucesso deste projeto foi a adaptação do método de microinjeção de embriões para a espécie Culex quinquefasciatus tornando possível a injeção dos transgenes LA513, LA882 e LA3653 com o objetivo de obtermos linhagens transgênicas. A obtenção de linhagens transgênicas com estas construções se mostraram mais laboriosa do que o previsto, dificultando a transgenia. Porém, as aplicações práticas em controle de vetores utilizando a técnica do RIDL são imensas e pode se tornar uma importante ferramenta do Manejo Integrado de vetores.
The Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes are considered urban plague and are able to grown in polluted water achieving high density. This specie are important vectors in the transmission of parasites and arbovirus. Chemical control methods shown to be ineffective and highly hazards to the environment. In this way, new technologies of control have been developed, among them there is SIT (Sterile Insect Technique) that utilizes radiation to sterilize males and then release in the environment to mate with wild females. New genetic methods are been proposed based on the SIT technique, they relies on the integration of a dominant lethal gene associated to a specific promoter of female avoiding the need for radiation (RIDL). In this process the insects receive diet supplemented with a chemical repressor (tetracycline). The expression of the dominant lethal gene is kept off while this repressor is added to the larvae. For the samples that would be being prepared for release, the repressor is removed, and the dominant lethal gene is activated, causing the death of all the females, and consequently only leaving male for release. The homozygous males for the lethal gene would be set free to mate with the wild females. The lineages would be heterozygous for the lethal gene and only males would survive. Since that, the capacity of mating of the transgenic males produced by method RDIL is an important prerequisite for the success of the program. It was crucial to achieve the objectives of this project adapt the microinjection method to Culex quinquefasciatus, so it became possible inject the LA513, LA882 and LA3653 plasmids seeking for the transgenic transformation. The obtaining of the transgenic mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus seems to be more difficult then expected and its development was harmed. The practical applications using RIDL in vector control is huge and can become a useful tool in the Integrated Management of vectors.

La centralisation idéologique et organisationnelle, poussée à son extrême par le stalinisme, va avoir pour effet la constitution d'un esprit de caste chez les communisme qui vont œuvrer à l'exaltation de leur mission collective. Rapidement après la prise du pouvoir, l'organisation transposé à l'échelle du pays tout entier les rapports de fascination soumission à l'égard du leader qui ne concernaient jusque-là que les seuls militants. Le parti communiste, détenteur de la seule pensée supposée vraie, exerce son pouvoir monopolistique sur la société qu'il cherche à unifier autour de ses valeurs et de son projet historique. Dans ce but, le leader doit faciliter par sa parole et son omniprésence symbolique l'unification du corps social. Le culte de Lénine, indissociable de la quête de la légitimité par le nouveau pouvoir, et premier grand rite soviétique, est envisagé comme la rencontre d'une volonté politique de mieux asseoir un régime encore fragile avec une partie de la culture pré-révolutionnaire. Le culte de Staline, type idéal du culte communiste, se constitue à partir de la fabrication d'une image charismatique. Les individus, atomises par le totalitarisme stalinien, vont avoir pour seul repère le leader infaillible. À partir du conflit Tito-Staline, le culte de certains leaders s'enrichit d'un nouvel élément constitutif : la défense de l'identité nationale
The ideological and organised centralisation, carried to its extreme by Stalinism, gave way to a group conciousness among communists who were about to develope exaltation in their collective mission. Rapidly after the taking of power, the organisation transposed the feelings of fascination submission towards the leader into a national scale; until then these feelings had concerned with the militants only. The communist party, the possessor of the supposed true and only thought, exerted its monopolistic power on the society which it was looking to unify around all its values and its historical project. In this goal, the leader should facilitate by his words and his symbolical omnipresence the unification of the social body. The worship of Lenin, inseparable from the search for legitimacy by the new power, and the first greatest soviet ritual, was envisioned as the encounter of the political ambition to strengthen the still fragile regime with some part of the culture before the revolution. The worship of Stalin, ideal pattern of the cult in the communist party, began to take shape from a charismatic image. The individuals, isolated by stalin's totalitarism, were bound to have a single point of reference : an infaillible leader

L'ouvrage traite des origines chretiennes de narbonne, par la connaissance des edifices du culte qui ont laisse des traces materielles sur le sol, ou a travers les monuments graves conserves dans les musees de la ville. Il etudie d'abord le martyrium du premier eveque qui evangelisa la cite dans le cours du iiie siecle, paul, et il montre le developpement du culte qui s'instaura autour de son tombeau des la fin du ive siecle. La question delicate de l'implantation de la cathedrale du ive siecle est ouverte par l'examen d'une basilique a chevet quadrangulaire et de son baptistere en crypte. Les caracteristiques architecturales du monument revelent des influences syriennes. La relecture de l'inscription dedicatoire de l'eveque rusticus, l'etude des documents ecrits relatifs a l'ancienne cathedrale et l' examen des vestiges archeologiques encore en place, permettent de mieux connaitre la cathedrale edifiee a l'interieur des murs, au ve siecle. Grace aux sources litteraires et aux monuments epigraphiques, on situe les eglises du suburbium. La basilique des saints marcel et saturnin revele l'antiquite du culte des martyrs africains. La basilique saint-felix fut erigee pour honorer les reliques du martyr de gerone. Au temps des wisigoths, elle devint la cathedrale des ariens. L'autel de minerve qui en provient sans doute donne l'occasion de definir l'une des plus anciennes typologies de mensae dans la region septimano-catalane. Un dernier monument est analyse, il s'agit d'un edicule qui reproduit fidelement le tombeau de jesus apres les amenagements qu'il recut au temps de constantin. Ainsi, a travers les edifices du culte qu'elle a dresses, durant les premiers siecles, on percoit les diverses influences qui se sont exercees sur la communaute chretienne de narbonne
The book deals with the christian origins of narbonne, through the knowledge of the cult monuments that have left material marks on the ground, or trough the engraved monuments kept in the museums of the town. It first studies the martyrium of the first bishop, paul, who evangelized the city in the course of the third century, and its shows the development of the cult that was organized around his tomb, as soon as the end of the fourth century. The difficult question of the situation of the fourth century cathedral is opened by the exam of a basilica with quadrangular chevet and of its baptistry in crypt. The architectural features of the monument particularly revealed syrian influences. A new reading of the dedicarory inscription of bishop rusticus, the study of the written documents about the ancient cathedral and the exam of architectural traces still existing, allow to know the ecclesia built inside the wall, in the fifth century. Thanks to the litterary sources and to the epigraphic monuments, the churches of suburbium can be situated. Saint marcel and saturnin basilica witnesses, with its reliquary, the ancientness of the worship for african martyrs. Saint felix basilica was stood up to honor the relics of the martyr of gerone. At the time of wisigoths it be came the cathedral for arians. The altar of minerve which comes from it, probably gives the opportunity to define one of the most ancient typologies of mensae in the septimano-catalan country. A last monument is analysed. It is a little monument which faithfully reproduces jesus'tomb after the improvements done at the time of constantin. So, through the monuments of cult it built during the first centuries, we can see the various impacts on the christian community of narbonne

Abydos in egypt has been held since the middle kingdom as holy city of the god osiris. Between the new kingdom and the coptic period, the site has seen the building of royal foundations which contributed to modify the general configuration of the abydene circus. The royal inscriptions discovered on location show a remarkable use of the local myths aiming at the legitimation of the pharaon. On another hand, the spread of the worship of osiris and the veneration of the local relic have contributed to the elaboration of religious speculations which take place in the general evolution of religious beliefs of the late period

This thesis attempts to place the history of the Catholic University in Ireland within its Irish context. Famous primarily as the cause in which John Henry Newman, its first Rector, wrote his The Idea of a University, the Catholic University of Ireland (CUI) nevertheless played an important role in Irish political life, both ecclesiastical and otherwise. The present dissertation traces the history of the University from its inception in the debates over national education in Ireland through to shortly after the departure of Newman in 1858. The figure of Paul Cullen as agent of the Irish bishops to the Holy See, archbishop of Armagh and, from 1852, archbishop of Dublin, is critical to the study. Cullen has largely been portrayed in the existing historiography on both the CUI and Newman as a narrow, ultramontane obscurantist intent on obstructing the more liberal Newman. By utilising sources previously unavailable to earlier works on the University (and ignored by scholars of Newman), this existing picture of the Cullen-Newman relationship has been re-examined. Cullen's role in the early battles to obtain a Roman condemnation of the secular Queen's Colleges and to gain a Catholic University in their place, as well as his relationship with Newman and his continuing interest in the University have been examined. The educational philosophies and ambitions of the two men have been compared, and it has been argued that they were far closer than has previously been assumed. The very real disagreements between Newman and Cullen (over such issues as finance and student discipline) and their effects on the University have also been considered. The present dissertation concludes with a discussion of the reasons for the relative failure of the Catholic University of Ireland.

Resumo: Esta dissertação tem como principal objeto de estudo o poema latino intitulado Culex ("O Mosquito"), que faz parte da Appendix Vergiliana ("Apêndice Virgiliano"), conjunto de textos que foi transmitido junto com as obras de Virgílio. No primeiro capítulo, após uma breve apresentação da Appendix, discute-se a recepção, a autoria e a datação do poema em questão, e, com base na teoria intertextual nos Estudos Clássicos, procura-se refletir sobre como a autoria influencia a leitura e a análise do Culex. Discute-se, ainda, o gênero do poema ¿ o epílio ¿ e analisa-se em detalhes sua estrutura e matéria, em que é marcante a mistura de gêneros, o caráter paródico e o diálogo com as Bucólicas, Geórgicas e Eneida. O segundo capítulo consiste em uma tradução (ainda inédita em língua portuguesa) amplamente anotada do poema, acompanhada do texto latino. E, por fim, o terceiro capítulo é composto por análises ¿ embasadas na teoria intertextual ¿ de alguns trechos do Culex e das três obras canônicas de Virgílio
Abstract: This dissertation has as the main object of study the latin poem entitled Culex ("The Mosquito"), which is part of the Appendix Vergiliana ("Virgilian Appendix"), a collection of texts transmitted together with Virgil¿s masterpieces. On the first chapter of this study, after a brief presentation of the Appendix, a discussion about the reception, the authorship and the date of the concerning poem is presented, and, based on the Classical Studies intertextual theory, it is attempted to reflect about in which degree the authorship influences on the Culex reading and analysis. It is also discussed the poem¿s genre ¿ the epyllion ¿ and it is presented a detailed review of its structure and subject, in which is remarkable the genre miscellany, the parodic character and the dialogue with the Eclogues, Georgics and Aeneid. The second chapter consists of a broadly annotated translation of the poem (up to now inedited in Portuguese), followed by the Latin text. At last, the third chapter is composed by some analysis ¿ based on the intertextual theory ¿ of some passages of the Culex and of the three Virgil¿s canonical works

La documentation relative à Venus en Proconsulaire est abondante et variée. Elle est de deux sortes,écrite et figurée. Elle s'étend sur une longue période de six siècles. Durant ce temps,la déesse a eu droit à l'une des iconographies les plus riches. Ses lieux de culte peu nombreux certes,ont continué de fonctionner jusqu'au IVe siècle de l'ère chrétienne. Cette abondance et cette longévité des témoignages démontrent la popularité des images de cette déesse et la vigueur de son culte. Dans les illustrations iconographiques,l'image qui prédomine est celle d'une déesse nue ou à peine voilée. De ce corps voluptueux se dégage une certaine notion d'érotisme. Certes,Vénus est la déesse des plus douces voluptés. Son culte est souvent lié aux prostitutions sacrées. Déesse multiple,elle a plusieurs attributions. Mais elle apparaît surtout comme pourvoyeuse de fécondité générale
