Abstract:
RESUMEN: Este estudio es una relectura de la memoria del destierro y presidio de Emilio Bacardí en las islas Chafarinas en el norte de África como ejemplo de literatura carcelaria. Se explora el texto de Bacardí como testimonio personal, así como de denuncia de violaciones de derechos humanos. Igualmente se considera la obra como un documento transnacional, histórico y político que deja huellas de la experiencia particular de presidiarios cubanos en los años culminantes de la guerra contra España y la transición hacia un nuevo orden administrativo y político en la isla. Este estudio al igual considera De Cuba a Chafarinas dentro de la producción literaria de este período, es decir, los diarios de la Guerra de Independencia o diarios de campaña. ABSTRACT: This article is a rereading of Emilio Bacardí's memoir of his exile and imprisonment in the North African islands of Chafarinas as an example of prison poetics. It explores Bacardi's text as a personal testimony as well as a denunciation of human rights violations. It also considers the text as a transnational, historical and political document that traces the particular experiences of Cuban prisoners during the culminating years of the Cuban wars against Spain and the transition toward a new administrative and political order on the island. This article also offers a reading of De Cuba a Chafarinas within the literary production of this period, namely diaries of the War of Independence or diarios de campaña .

Con el presente artículo nos proponemos indagar en el análisis lingüístico-discursivo de un corpus documental que aún no ha sido suficientemente atendido desde el ámbito de la filología: los diarios de guerra redactados por soldados rebeldes cubanos durante la guerra hispano-cubana por la Independencia. En el estudio se tratarán, en primer lugar, las características definitorias de este tipo textual y se analizarán las convenciones escriturarias del código y del registro militar en un contexto de obligada inmediatez comunicativa. Se completará tal estudio con la presentación de los rasgos de habla que pueden apreciarse en los textos para así contribuir al estudio de la variación del español americano/cubano decimonónico.

En la Primera República los diarios ven su libertad coartada con medidas casi dictatoriales. Este hecho puede parecer contradictorio al ser la libertad de prensa un asunto prioritario en los debates sobre la Constitución de 1869. Sin embargo, la unión de las fuerzas políticas pronto desaparece y deja en su lugar un clima de crispación. La inestabilidad política, las sublevaciones cantonal y carlista y la cuestión de Cuba son problemas analizados por la prensa ante la atenazadora mirada del poder. El control y represión de los diarios supone el fin del sueño revolucionario.

Abstract:
El objetivo del estudio fue conocer si existe una correlación significativa entre la alfabetización financiera necesaria para las tareas administrativas diarias y los niveles de rendimiento de los administradores dentro de la red corporativa adventista en Cuba. Esta investigación fue no experimental, cuantitativo, transversal y correlacional. Se utilizó un muestreo estratificado, incorporando a 123 directores de la red corporativa adventista en Cuba, de una población total de 242. El coeficiente alfa de Cronbach de 0.721 para el instrumento de alfabetización financiera de 15 ítems, y 0.870 para el instrumento de rendimiento laboral de 19 ítems, ambos considerados aceptables para este estudio. Se aplicó la prueba de rango correlacional de Spearman debido a la distribución no normal de los datos. Se encontró un coeficiente de correlación de Spearman (r) de .311 y un nivel de significancia (p) de .001. Dado este nivel de significancia (p < .05), se rechazó la hipótesis nula que sugería que no había relación entre las variables, apoyando la hipótesis alternativa de una correlación positiva de fuerza media. Los hallazgos sugieren que mejorar la alfabetización financiera necesaria para las tareas diarias, se correlaciona con un mejor rendimiento entre los administradores corporativos adventistas en Cuba que participaron en este estudio.

Abstract:
Este artículo tiene por objeto analizar la recepción en la España franquista de la llamada Crisis de los Misiles, episodio clave de la Guerra Fría que tuvo por protagonistas a las dos superpotencias del momento —Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética— y a Cuba a finales de octubre y noviembre de 1962 y que no ha sido tratada previamente por ningún estudio específico. Así, este trabajo examinará la reacción de algunos de los principales diarios españoles ante las diferentes fases del acontecimiento, complementando esta fuente principal con la consulta de archivos españoles y norteamericanos. La posición de la prensa española ante la Crisis de los Misiles reflejó las paradojas del régimen franquista, el cual controlaba estos órganos de opinión directa o indirectamente. En todo caso, los diarios, mostraron una indudable inquietud al principio de la Crisis y no ocultaron su satisfacción ante el final de esta y la retirada de los misiles de Cuba. Sin embargo, su visión de la Crisis estuvo definida, esencialmente, por el anticomunismo primario del régimen y por su deseo de situarse en el mundo occidental como un adalid privilegiado de los Estados Unidos. De esta manera la mayoría de la prensa lamentó el desenlace que tuvo la Crisis, vista por ellos como una oportunidad perdida para derrocar al castrismo.

Abstract:
Introducción: La protección al adulto mayor y las acciones combinadas salud-deporte constituye prioridades del estado cubano en la actualidad para aumentar su calidad de vida. El asma puede llevar a estas personas a reducir su nivel de actividad física, debido a las dificultades para realizar las tareas diarias. Objetivo: Aplicar acciones terapéuticas para favorecer la calidad de vida del adulto mayor asmático. Métodos: Investigación basada en el enfoque cualitativo utilizando como herramientas la encuesta y análisis documental, experimentado con un muestreo de 53 adultos mayores del sexo femenino, que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión: enfermedad, calidad de vida, autoestima y estilos de vida. La investigación aplicada con una primera etapa descriptiva-evaluativa y de diseño de las acciones terapéuticas y una segunda etapa de realización de intervenciones, donde el nivel de actividad física se midió mediante el Cuestionario Internacional de Actividad Física con la evaluación de los resultados, efectuada en el área comunitaria de la circunscripción #21 del Consejo Popular “Victoria de Girón”, municipio Palma Soriano, provincia Santiago de Cuba, durante el período septiembre 2021 a julio 2022. Resultados: Las acciones terapéuticas propuestas resultaron de gran afinidad e interés, con un nivel de actividad física similar a la de los no asmáticos y con una aptitud cardiorrespiratoria inferior a la de los adultos sanos. Conclusiones. Se corroboró que las acciones terapéutica adaptadas a los adultos mayores creó una alta motivación y mejor correspondencia entre los objetivos propuestos y los métodos empleados para el trabajo con pacientes asmáticos.

Abstract:
El Diluvio fue un periódico barcelonés con una vida superior a las ocho décadas que representaba un punto de vista republicano, federalista, laico y partidario de la justicia social. Unas ideas que estuvieron perseguidas durante la mayor parte de su existencia, de 1858 a 1939. La Segunda República, en cambio, fue el marco perfecto para el desarrollo del periódico, que vivió un gran crecimiento en su tirada y tuvo una influencia muy notable en la política catalana. Fue el diario popular en la llamada Cataluña populista. Los artículos de El Diluvio marcaron diversos hitos desde inicios de 1931 hasta el fin de la guerra civil en 1939 y su impacto fue reconocido por las figuras políticas de la época. El periódico también enfrentó un periodo de dificultades al formarse los gobiernos de derechas y desencadenarse una serie de acontecimientos que implicaron la suspensión de su publicación y censura previa. Jaime Claramunt, nacido en Cuba, fue su director hasta 1938, cuando fue apartado por la Unión General de Trabajadores, que incautó el periódico. El final llegó con la entrada de las tropas franquistas en Barcelona, que cerraron El Diluvio y reprimieron a los hombres del periódico que no marcharon al exilio.
El Diluvio was a newspaper from Barcelona with a life of more than eight decades that represented a republican, federalist, secular and social justice point of view. Ideas that were persecuted for most of its existence, from 1858 to 1939. The Second Republic, on the other hand, was the perfect framework for the development of the newspaper, which experienced a great growth in its circulation and had a very significant influence on Catalan politics. It was the popular newspaper in the so-called populist Catalonia. The articles of El Diluvio marked several milestones from the beginning of 1931 until the end of the civil war in 1939 and its impact was recognized by the political figures of the time. The newspaper also faced a period of difficulties in forming right-wing governments and triggering a series of events that involved the suspension of its publication and prior censorship. Jaime Claramunt, born in Cuba, was its director until 1938, when he was separated by the Unión General de Trabajadores, which seized the newspaper. The end came with the entry of Franco's troops in Barcelona, which closed El Diluvio and repressed the newspaper men who did not march into exile.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how Walter Salles’ Diarios de motocicleta and On the Road use road movie conventions to forward their political agendas. It establishes the interconnectedness of the near contemporaneous journeys recounted in the two films by Cuban revolutionary Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara and author of the seminal novel On the Road (1957) Jack Kerouac and how these are linked to the genesis of the road movie genre. It goes on to analyse how both films use the political strategies of the road movie (rebellion) to (re)explore and update the beginnings of the interconnected social, cultural and political revolutions (the Cuban Revolution, the Beat Generation and their links to the counter culture in the United States). In keeping with the broader aims of the book, this chapter is also about defending the political potential of the genre film and how it is used to address rather than ‘gloss over’ the political history of the continent.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the life and writings of Eusebio Guiteras (1823–93), who lived for twenty-five years in Philadelphia. Guiteras captured American life and culture in his travel diaries of the 1840s–1880s, and he translated Rudo Ensayo, a work by the eighteenth-century priest Juan Nentvig (1713–68) that details the evangelization mission of the Jesuits in what is now the American Southwest, but was then northern New Spain. Contextualizing the production and circulation of the multiple editions of Nentvig’s text in the nineteenth century, specifically one by the well-known antiquarian Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810–71), this Latina/o translation advocates for a constructive place for the Catholic Church in the US and Cuba. This advocacy must be understood in light of the translation’s underlying racial politics. Following his source text and the political designs of the editors of the Records of the American Catholic Historical Society (1894), in which the translation appeared, Guiteras simplistically and erroneously depicts the pacification of Native Americans in New Spain as a compassionate enterprise. In his travel diary, Un invierno en Nueva York (n.d.), Guiteras transposes this spiritual enterprise to the Cuban context, in which the place of Afro Cubans was being debated in the 1880s and 1890s on the island and in the US. In doing so, he envisions Catholic priests and Catholicism as agents for the pacification and assimilation of Afro Cubans in Cuba’s future republic while also arguing for a parallel and positive role for the Catholic Church in fashioning a culturally integrated United States.

Abstract:
When the United States declared war on Spain in 1898, American troops battled Spanish forces in Cuba and across the Pacific in Spain’s longtime colony, the Philippines. There, American troops initially fought alongside Filipino rebels, but after the defeat of Spanish forces the United States annexed the islands and fighting broke out between the rebels and their new occupiers. American soldiers, including nearly 6,000 African Americans, struggled to understand their adversaries, employing varied conceptual frames that mixed scientific racism, the notion of Manifest Destiny, and American exceptionalism and that encompassed long-standing fault lines in American identity, including religion. The chapter draws material from diaries of soldiers, black and ethnic newspaper presses, and diplomatic sources to describe a potent but ephemeral mix of racialist thinking during and immediately after the Philippine-American War.

Abstract:
Chapter Five considers exiled writer Antonio José Ponte’s essays on José Martí. Ponte, who has lived in Madrid since 2007, is known for his lucid nonfiction, as well as his short stories, novels, and poetry. While Ponte is associated with the space of exile, reading the author’s work through an archipelagic lens signals the connections between the myriad spaces of the arcubiélago from the nineteenth century to the present. Analyzing Ponte’s essays on José Martí alongside his work on ruins, the chapter makes the argument that the writer seeks to create a wider, archipelagic space in his writing. For example, when Ponte reappropriates Cuba’s national hero José Martí in his well-known essay titled “El abrigo de aire” [The Coat of Air] (2003), he suggests that the space of the Revolution is not closed and static, but, rather, that it must be rankled and remapped to remain relevant. The chapter also includes an analysis of Ponte’s other essays on Martí, as well as his short stories and work on the Diario de Cuba.

Abstract:
Se analizan los resultados de experimentos realizados con el objetivo de determinar la intensidad de herbivorismo y la supervivencia de las cepas verdes y pardas de Kappaphycus alvarezii así como de Kappaphycus striatus en diferentes zonas de un ecosistema arrecifal caribeño. Fue analizado también en ambas especies el efecto sinérgico que ocasiona la profundidad sobre la intensidad del herbivorismo. En relación a la presencia de herbívoros, las zonas comparadas se segregaron en dos grupos. En uno de ellos, sometido a gran presión de herbivoría, como norma general los ejemplares perdían peso. En el otro, con mucha menor presión, el peso de los mismos aumentó. K striatus resultó la especie más consumida por los herbívoros, mientras que la cepa verde de K. alvarezii fue la menos afectada en los biotopos contrastados, excepto en los fondos rocosos con mantos de Alsidium triquetrum (S. G. Gmelin) Trevisan. Se comprobó que Kappaphycus subsiste solo en las zonas más someras del arrecife, exceptuando 5 m de profundidad en la cual no sobrevive a causa de la intensa presión de herbivoria. A profundidades de 10 y 15 m la supervivencia de Kappaphycus es muy limitada, posiblemente a causa de la disminución de la intensidad lumínica y de un menor dinamismo de la masa de agua. Como mostraron los datos de consumo diario, aparentemente el ramoneo íctico puede ser inducido conductualmente.
