Afuah, Allan. Co-opetition in Crowdsourcing: When Simultaneous Cooperation and Competition Deliver Superior Solutions. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198816225.003.0011.

Abstract:
In tournament-based crowdsourcing, members of a crowd compete to solve a problem and the agent with the best solution wins. In collaboration-based crowdsourcing, members of a crowd cooperate to solve a problem, bringing their collective expertise to bear on the problem. Each can yield extraordinarily high-value solutions. This raises a question: Can crowdsourcing co-opetition—simultaneous cooperation and competition to solve a problem via crowdsourcing—deliver even higher-value solutions than either tournament-based or collaboration-based crowdsourcing alone? I argue that simultaneous competition to solve modules of a decomposable problem and collaboration to aggregate the module solutions produces a higher-value solution to the problem than collaboration alone. And simultaneous cooperation to reduce crowdsourcing frictions and competition to solve a non-decomposable problem yields a higher-value solution than competition alone.

Ardalan, Christine. The Public Health Nurses of Jim Crow Florida. University Press of Florida, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5744/florida/9780813066158.001.0001.

Abstract:
During the Jim Crow era, Florida’s public health nurses, mostly white and a few black women, tackled the state’s public health issues born of race, climate, geography, and poverty. These pioneering professional women were often the only ones available to deliver current health improvement information into the homes of people who were out of the reach of modern medical care. From Florida’s Panhandle to the Everglades and on to the Keys, they faced a number of challenges to reach both white and African American people in rural communities. Like the nurses in other states of the South and the North, they drew strength from their professional identity, but in confronting Florida’s unique challenges, their determination to save lives set them apart as they battled the state’s daunting environmental and cultural obstacles. They found innovative ways to build a bridge between the communities they served and public health policies, both state and federal, that addressed the threats of infection and the high infant and maternal mortality levels. Competing cultural constructions of health shaped their groundbreaking efforts to reach and serve underprivileged members of each race, whether to prevent illness and disease or to improve childbirth and general wellbeing.

F A, Mann. 10 The British Act of State. Oxford University Press, 1986. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198255642.003.0010.

Abstract:
The difficulty of identifying and defining a foreign act of State would probably be less aggravating if an established meaning could be attributed to the British act of State. This, unfortunately, is not the case. The consequence is that even the meaning of the British act of State is obscure, the more so, as very justifiably Lord Wilberforce said that the doctrine of the act of State ‘cannot be stated in terms of a principle, but develops from case to case; it has perhaps the disadvantage that it includes within itself two different conceptions or rules’. It is submitted that the phrase indeed carries two, perhaps three, entirely different meanings and that as a result of a confusing argument presented on behalf of the Crown in Attorney-General v. Nissan, the opinions delivered by their lordships make difficult reading and the present status and scope of the two branches of the doctrine cannot easily be unravelled.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the decline of the Associated Negro Press (ANP). It did not take long for the mainstream press to realize that the ANP was sitting on a journalistic goldmine with its direct pipeline to one of the biggest stories of the decade, if not the century: decolonization and how it intersected with the battle against Jim Crow. Claude Barnett was in an advance wave of African Americans descending upon Africa seeking to take advantage of the perceived gold rush delivered by decolonization. Another viselike pressure that the ANP found hard to resist was the other major force of that conflicted era: anticommunism. Unlike the past, the Negro press was now reluctant to hire talented writers with radical associations. As this high drama was unfolding, Barnett continued to live the good life in Chicago, making it difficult to grasp the far-reaching changes just over the horizon.

Abstract:
Frederick Douglass (1818–95) was not the only fugitive from American slavery to visit Scotland before the Civil War, but he was the best known and his impact was far-reaching. In 1846 his stunning oratory drew enthusiastic crowds from Ayr to Aberdeen who came to hear him promote his new autobiography and deliver the abolitionist message. Although the main part of the book is framed by accounts of the racist discrimination Douglass faced on both his outward and return sea voyages, it does not offer a chronological narrative of his speaking engagements in Scotland. Rather, each of the three central chapters focus on a different set of encounters with notable Scots in order to demonstrate the vital role they played in the transformation of Douglass from a subordinate envoy of a white-run abolitionist society to an independent antislavery campaigner in his own right. In particular, they prompted far-reaching changes in his styles of speaking and writing, in his choice of heroes and how he identified with them, and in the new fervour with which he attempted to control the way he was represented verbally and pictorially. Situated at the intersection of biography, history and literature, it applies literary techniques of close reading to materials normally treated as historical documents, such as letters and newspaper reports, in order to draw out the subtleties of Douglass's changing attitudes, ideas and affiliations.
