Full textThe relative utility hypothesis postulate that individuals have a preference for social status, which means that an individual's utility function depends in part on her relative position in the economy in terms of material prosperity. This way to define social status is based on an objective measure different to subjective measures such as individual's personality, her actions, or her social commitment. This dissertation aims to contribute empirically and theoretically to the relative hypothesis literature. On the empirical side, this dissertation examines the relative utility hypothesis against the absolute utility hypothesis using the households database drawn from the German Socio-Economic Panel. Estimation results indicate that the data are consistent with the relativity hypothesis. More precisely, the individual's utility depends positively on her income and negatively on a reference level of income, which is defined as the Land-average income. On the theoretical side, I study implications of status seeking on: (i) the relation between growth and wealth distribution, and the relation between growth and welfare (ii) the relation between growth and public policy in terms of provision of public capital and protection of the environment. The results underline the role of status seeking in explaining the wealth distribution and the relation between wealth distribution and growth. I also show that the relation between growth and welfare is not increasing and monotonous as in the case without status effects. This finding corroborates the idea that the relative utility hypothesis provides an explanation of the non-positive correlation, observed in empirical studies, between the aggregated average welfare and income per capita. In addition, my results suggest that social competition for improving the social status may be used to explain the trade-off between economic policy and environmental policy, the disparity of the government size in the economy, and the disparity of the growth rate between identical economies
Khan, Muhammad. "Impact de l’Inflation sur la croissance et ses déterminants macroéconomiques." Thesis, Orléans, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014ORLE0503/document.
Full textThis thesis is concerned with the effects of inflation on output growth and on its determinants. In the first step, ourstudy analyzes two aspects of the inflation–growth relationship. First, it examines the nonlinearity of the relationshipbetween inflation and output growth and identifies several thresholds for the global sample and for various incomespecificsub-samples. Secondly, it identifies some country-based macroeconomic features that influence thisnonlinearity. Our empirical results substantiate both views and validate the fact that the inflation–growth nonlinearityis sensitive to a country’s trade openness capital accumulation, and government expenditures (chapter 2). After that,we explain this inflation–growth nonlinearity by testing a Tobin effect of inflation on physical capital and asubstitution effect – from work to education – for human capital. We find that the positive effects of moderateinflation rate are due to the Tobin effect on physical capital whereas a weak negative effect of high inflation ratestems from a better human capital accumulation. We identify a strong role of well developed financial systems in allthese mechanisms (chapter 3). Lastly, we address a lack of coherence between the macro based optimal inflationthresholds for output growth and the actual preferences of central banks around the world. We notice that centralbanks use micro based New-Keynesian models and their optimal inflation rate is the one that minimizes dispersionsin factors and product markets. We test the effect of inflation on relative price variability and output growthvariability and, for all income groups, the results support a slight positive inflation rate to minimize theseuncertainties. For our selected emerging economies, monetary policy regimes also affect these dispersions (chapter4)

Full textThe success of applying a partial cut in northern hardwood stands is based on the contribution of harvested and residual trees to overall stand growth, which can be captured by a stand-level criterion called the growth dominance coefficient (GDC). The main objective of this study was to test the relevance of using the GDC to evaluate the success of partial cuts applied to even-aged and uneven-aged sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.)-yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) stands. To do this, we first determined whether GDC calculated with two indicators of resource acquisition, stem mass and tree leaf area, produce similar results after partial cutting according to stand structure. Second, using mixed linear models, we determined the effect of selection cuts on GDC in uneven-aged stands over the short and medium term, and we quantified the effects of tree vigour and size before cutting on diameter growth response of trees after cutting. Results indicate that GDC calculated based on stem mass were similar to GDC calculated based on tree leaf area in even-aged stands (p = 0.7200) but were significantly lower in uneven-aged stands (p < 0.001), likely because of a limited ability for crown expansion in large trees. Furthermore, selection cutting in uneven-aged stands did not significantly change GDC in the short (p = 0.7721) and medium (p = 0.8363) term. However, several trees that grew rapidly before cutting responded negatively to partial cutting while many trees that grew slowly before cutting responded positively. Overall, assessing the success of a partial cut seems difficult using a stand-level criterion such as the GDC. Such an assessment, as well as a better understanding of the effects of a partial cut, could, however, be obtained by a more detailed growth analysis performed at the tree or diameter class level.

Full textThis thesis proposes an analysis focused both on inter-port relations and on those governing the international maritime trade elements: ports, hinterland and foreland. In the first chapter, an assessment on hierarchies and relative growth in Europe is made by applying two complementary methods: Markov chains and convergence clubs. These show that there is a growth polarization within a limited number of large ports and a high frequency for those most disadvantaged. This result marks the lack of convergence within European ports. In addition, the phenomenon of "peripheral port challenge" would be exercised here by the small ports on the medium-sized ones, which would strongly contest some literature results on this issue. The second chapter highlights the importance of the relationship between the port and its hinterland and maritime environments. It focuses on the spatial aspect that characterizes these relationships and shows existing disparities between port regions. While Northern Europe is characterized by complementarity, Southern ports have competitive relationships. It also shows that the size of the local market and its proximity to the ports are not systematically good determinants of throughput. However, the accessibility to the market from peripheral port regions is a determining factor and can be explained by the existence of market niches within these areas. The third chapter focuses on maritime connectivity by country, its determinants and the spatial effects that can influence this. The analysis reveals that there are substantial differences between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. It allows, beyond the results of literature, to identify the dominant relationships in each region. Although complementarity and competition may coexist between neighboring ports/countries, this study shows that one may prevail over the other

Full textThe field of nanoscience which is developing intensively, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attracting strong interest because of their particular properties resulting of their special structure. To control and optimize manufacturing processes, it is important to understand the mechanisms governing their growth. Among the synthesis methods of CNTs, the aerosol-assisted CCVD (Catalyst Chemical Vapor Deposition) process, developed in Laboratoire Francis Perrin, allows the continuous and rapid growth of aligned and clean Multi-Walled CNT by the simultaneous injection of liquid carbonaceous precursor (toluene) and catalyst precursor (metallocene). Our main objective was to understand how the chemical transformation of metallocene into catalyst particles, what is the exact nature of catalyst particles, what are the parameters controlling their activity and finally how the catalytic species progress to enable the growth of CNTs. From an experimental approach involving a systematic study of products all along the furnace for different thermodynamic (flow and cooling step) and chemical (concentration of precursors, introduction of reducing gas) conditions, we demonstrate a homogeneous nucleation of particles of iron in the gas phase occurring before the isothermal area followed by their gradual deposition along the furnace. The catalytic particles located at the base of the aligned nanotube carpet are semi-molten iron saturated with carbon that is fed continuously by the catalytic species which diffuse all along the CNT carpet to its base

Full textThis research deals with the relationship between economic growth and the environment. The three empirical essays described in this work are based on the survey on the environmental Kuznets curve, presented in the first chapter. The second analyzes eight indicators of sustainable development and provides their numerical national assessments between 1990 and 2000. The comparison of trends from the varions measures shows French development was weakly sustainable, but unsustainable in the strong sense over the examined decade. The hypothesis of stochastic convergence for individual sulphur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) missions is tested empirically in the third chapter, over respectively 81 nations between 1950 and 1990 and 127 countries between 1950 and 2003. In this context, a recent, alternative econometric methodology, developed by Pesaran (2007), is applied. Empirical results from unit root and stationarity tests suggest a limited environmental convergence process, even between OECD countries. Building on Hausmann et al. (2005) article, the last chapter identifies episodes of CO2 missions growth acceleration and episodes of degrowth over a dataset composed of 124 economies from 1950 to 2004. Econometric methods of binary variables on panel data are used to find economic, demographic and institutional determinants of such trends. Given the low explanatory power of the significant variables, the empirical study suggests the triggering of acceleration and degrowth episodes remains highly unpredictable

Full textPlant roots play an important role in the growth and development of plants, and it is well known that the mechanical interactions between a growing root and the surrounding soil can have a major impact on root growth and consequently on plant biomass production. These mechanical interactions are one of numerous factors that explain the variability of root architecture, including genetics, environment and developmental instability. But this factor has often been under-estimated. I hypothesize that the heterogeneous structure of soil at the particle scale, demonstrated by the broad distribution of forces, can significantly influence root growth trajectories. This thesis aims at determining how grains in granular soils are reorganized under the action of growing roots, and in return how the resulting forces acting on root tips modify their development, including the kinematics of their trajectories, in order to develop a general biophysical law of root-soil mechanical interactions. I developed a 2D numerical model of root growth in a granular medium using a Discrete Element Model (DEM). The model is able to compute grain-grain and root-grain contact forces within a granular medium. The root system is modelled using chains of connected spheroline elements. The orientation of root growth at every growth step is determined by the dynamics of the whole root under the action of its internal elastic forces and reaction forces exerted by the grains, which are the mechanical interactions that control numerical growth in the model.Parametric studies were carried out in order to (i) estimate the influence of granular structure (grain diameter distribution, cohesion, volume fraction) and root mechanical properties (root bending stiffness) on the axial force signal acting on the root tip, and on the root trajectories and (ii) define general physical laws that can be used further to analyze experimental data. The distribution curves of computed root tip-grain forces normalized by the mean force during a given period of growth were characterized by a decreasing power law for forces below the mean force, and an exponential fall-off for forces above the mean force, thus reflecting the broad distribution of forces inside the granular material. An analysis of the standard deviation of the local deformations of root trajectories resulted in two different regimes with regard root stiffness. In the first regime, soil controlled the root deformation and in the second, the root trajectory was straighter and displaced more significantly the surrounding grains during growth

Full textBirthweight is strongly and positively related to maternal preconceptional weight as well as with weight gain during pregnancy. Therefore, it would be expected that the increase in maternal weight before pregnancy, and weight gain during pregnancy, would be associated with an increase in birthweight in France. Animal models suggested that maternal weight changes in the periconceptional period can be considered as indicators of maternal energy balance and nutritional status, and may be involved in fetal growth and pregnancy outcomes.Obejective : 1) To evaluate time trends in maternal body size and birthweight. 2) To investigate the association of maternal weight changes in the periconceptional period with fetal growth and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Background : Birthweight is strongly and positively related to maternal preconceptional weight as well as with weight gain during preg Populations : Data were from ObEpi surveys ; French nationally representative perinatal surveys and the EDEN study. 1) For every ObEpi survey (1997, 2000, 2003 and 2006), data on weight and height were obtained for 20000 households representative of the French population.2) Mother-child pairs among singleton live births were included in the national perinatal surveys in 1972, 1981, 1995, 1998 and 2003 (n=8664, 4494, 11445, 12692 respectively). Mothers were interviewed a few days after delivery and data on delivery and the newborn were extracted from hospital records. 3) In the EDEN mother-child cohort, 1756 mother–child pairs had information on mother’s weight at 20 years, weight just before pregnancy, fetal anthropometry at second and third trimesters, infant’s birthweight and pregnancy complications. Also in the EDEN study 1744 women had prepregnancy weight available and at least 5 measures of weight in pregnancy. We extrapolated women’s weight at each week of gestation with a three-degrees polynomial model and estimated weight change during each trimester of gestation. Results : 1) Analyses based on data from ObEPI surveys showed that more recent cohorts (those born after the 1960’s) experienced an accelerated increase in the prevalence of obesity in relation to age during 1997-2006 particularly for women when compared with older birth cohorts. 2) Body mass index and weight gain during pregnancy increased between 1972 and 2003 ; paradoxically birth weight did not show a parallel increase. In fact, after adjusting for several potential confounders birthweight showed a decrease between 1995 and 2003.This corresponded with an increase in babies born small-for-gestational age (SGA) and a decrease in those born large-for-gestational age (LGA). 3) In women with BMI < 25 kg/m2, weight loss before pregnancy was associated with less fetal growth and increased risk of SGA.Factors including anemia and pathologies such as cancer were also considered but did not explain the findings. On the other hand, “large” weight gain between age 20 and pregnancy was associated with increased risk of gestational diabetes irrespective of overweight status of the woman. 4) Lastly, a significant association between the variation in maternal weightover the first trimester of pregnancy and fetal growth was noted even after accounting for the variation in weight over the last two trimesters. This association was independent of weight gain later in pregnancy and was partly explained by placental weight showing the importance of periconceptual nutritional status. Conclusion : Although the obesity epidemic became apparent in adults only in the 1990s in France, some of its origins can be found as early as the mid 1960s. The increasing trend in the prevalence of SGA in France, and in other countries such like the US, should prioritize research efforts towards a better understanding of the causes of this time trend. Our datasuggest that weight changes in periconceptional period could be taken into account when evaluating the obstetrical risk

Full textAt the interface of genetics and environment, epigenetics contributes to phenotypic diversity. Quantifying the impact of epigenetic variation on quantitative traits (QT), an emerging challenge in humans. Growth provides a handset of quantitative traits to epigenetic studies. We studied the variability of several inter-related QTs: clinical QTs (height, height reponse to growth hormone and biological QT (serum IGF1 and serum IGF1 response to GH). Since insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) controls postnatal growth in mammals including human, we tested whether the CG methylation of the two promoters (P1 and P2) of the IGF1 gene could be a epigenetic contributor to the individual variation i) in circulating IGF1 and stature in growing children. ii) on response of these parameters to treatment with (GH). Child height and circulating IGF1. To explore the relation between IGF1 promoter methylation and height, we studied two cohorts of pedriatric endocrinology department, totalling 216 prepubertal children with various statures. The methylation of a cluster of six CGs located within the proximal part of the IGF1 P2 promoter showed a strong negative association with serum IGF1 and growth. These correlations were observed in two cohorts of growing children. Tall children show lower levels of methylation in several CGs in P2 and P1 promoters of IGF1 gene than short children with idiopathic short stature. CG methylation contributed 13% to the variance of height and 10% to the variance of serum IGF1. To test if the found association reflected biological causality, we tested if methylation at the P2 promoter affects the transcriptional activity of the IGF1 gene. The transcriptional activity of the P2 promoter was inversely correlated with the CG methylation in mononuclear blood cells. We established that high levels of CG methylation at the two promoters of IGF1 contributed to the many molecular mechanisms responsible for “idiopathic” short stature. Response to treatment with (GH). Short children using growth hormone (GH) to accelerate their growth respond to this treatment with a variable efficacy. The causes of this individual variability are partially understood and could involve epigenetics. In this aim, we investigated the contribution of DNA methylation to the response to GH at two levels: direct effect of GH on transcription of IGF1 gene, on circulating IGF1 and on the growth response to GH. Following a GH injection, we found a variable increase in IGF1 transcripts across the studied children. The increase in P2-driven transcripts showed a strong inverse correlation with 4/8 of P2 CGs. Among the CGs of P1 promoter, only CG-611 showed an inverse correlation with P1-driven transcripts. Variability of DNA methylation in these CGs contributes with 27% to 67% of increase in transcripts. In 136 children with idiopatic short stature, we showed that DNA methylation of the P2 promoter is associated with growth response to GH during the first year of GH administration, for both increment in growth rate and circulating IGF1. CG-137 methylation of P2 promoter contributes 25% to variance of growth response to GH. The link between DNA methylation and the response to a treatment in humans illustrating the role of epigenetic marks as potent contributors to conclusion « pharmacoepigenetics». Our work can find application in growth physiology and therapeutics, as well as for studies in aging, longevity or cancer where IGF1 has a prominent role

Full textQuantitative relationships were studied between external traits and dendrometric characteristics of beech trees on the one hand, and the occurrence and geometric shape of red heartwood (RH) on the other hand: I. External traits (dead branches, branch scars, wounds, cracks, fork) and the RH shape were described three-dimensionally and in detail on 4 trees. Thus, hypotheses were deduced about RH initiation based on branch scar/knot dimensions, and about stages of development of the RH shape. II. A type logistic regression model was developed which made it possible to quantify the effect of individual branch scars on the probability of RH occurrence. It also included an effect at the dendrometric level. 27 out of 31 trees were correctly classified. III. The overall RH shape (mean RH radius along the stem axis) was modelled using parameters for the RH width, length and height in the tree. The parameters could be estimated from branch scars and dendrometric variables. The model was parameterised using 16 trees. It was applied to an independent sample which consisted of the 4 trees of analysis I. IV. Local deviations from the overall RH shape were analysed below and above knots. This was done on 58 boards taken from the 16 trees of analysis III. Deviations were limited to the knot zone and to the upper RH end. As perspectives, the importance of validation of the RH models is stressed. It could also be considered to link the RH models to models of tree growth or roundwood processing

Full textPeriodic multilayers have found many applications in the fields of optics, mechanics or electronics. However, few studies focus on the electrical responses of the metal/oxide periodic structures versus temperature. The interest of this work was focused on the characterization of the multilayers and their electrical properties versus temperature. In TiO/Ti/TiO/TiO2 and WO/W/WO/WO3 systems produced by the reactive gas pulsing process, sample structures were established by transmission electron microscopy for sublayers thicknesses between 1.3 and 50.8 nm. Then, this study highlights a modification of conventional electrical behavior versus temperature. An empirical relationship was established between the electrical resistivity variation and the metal/oxide periodic multilayer structures. The correlation between the operating conditions and the produced structure allows predicting the resistivity of these metal/oxide multilayer structures. Finally, this manuscript paves the way to a new periodic nanostructuration with the combined use of glancing angle deposition and gas reactive pulsing process to produce the first films composed by inclined columns and periodic metal/oxide alternations

Full textWe consider Gray codes and efficient exhaustive generating algorithms for the sets belonging to three major classes of restricted words, that are: (1) restricted growth sequences, (2) factor avoiding q-ary words, and (3) pattern avoiding permutations. For the first two classes, our Gray codes (and thus, our generating algorithms) are based on order relations obtained by specializing known order relations; namely Reflected Gray Code (RGC) order and its variations, and we call them Reflected Gray Code based orders. The Gray code and the generating algorithm for the third class are based on Steinhaus-Johnson-Trotter order, that is, order relation induced by Steinhaus-Johnson-Trotter Gray code for permutations. In the first results, we define Gray codes and give efficient generating algorithms for the class of restricted growth sequences that satisfy our prescribed properties. In particular, we focus on four mainstream subclasses: subexcedant and ascent sequences, restricted growth functions and staircase words. The results are given in two parts: by using original RGC order and Co-RGC order, which generates prefix (and suffix, respectively) partitioned Gray codes; and we give comparison between the two results. In addition, we investigate the Graycodeness of the restricted ascent sequences. In the second results, we define Gray codes and give an efficient generating algorithm for the class of factor avoiding q-ary words. Among the involved tools, we make use of original RGC order for even q and Dual RGC order for odd q, the zero periodicity property, and word matching techniques adapted from that of Knuth-Morris-Pratt. We give the implementation of these results to define Gray code and generating algorithm for cross-bifix-free sets.In the third results, we define Gray codes and give efficient generating algorithms for the class of pattern avoiding permutations. In particular, we show that the Steinhaus-Johnson-Trotter Gray code for permutations, when restricted by avoiding some set of patterns, still remains a (possibly less restricted) Gray code. The main ingredients we are using in the investigation of the Graycodeness are: succession functions, the classical bijection from inversion tables to permutations, and the list of inversion tables with respect to RGC order. We give additional results on graph theoretic consequences

Full textThe "welfare-reducing growth" assumption is certainly one of the most important and difficult challenge that both policy-makers and economic analysis face today. The wide variety of theoretical and methodological approaches in this field implies that the qualitative-oriented part of this assumption remain rather unclear from both theoretical and empirical viewpoints. The purpose of this PhD-dissertation, beyond providing an original systhesis of the various strands of this field of research, is to re-construe its main directions in the context of a political economy of wealth, value(s) and well-being. The basis of our approach is a radical distinction between two analytical registers - 1) one concerning the economic value ; 2) the other focusing on the values that underlie the notion of well-being. The implications of this discussion are discussed : 1) from a theoretical point of view, in relation to the nature's value controversy in Ecological Economics ; 2) from both theoretical and methodological viewpoints in relation to the potential convergence between contemporary approaches of human well-being, with the aim of legitimizing conceptually and empirically a new kind of answer to the Easterlin paradox
