Full textThe relative utility hypothesis postulate that individuals have a preference for social status, which means that an individual's utility function depends in part on her relative position in the economy in terms of material prosperity. This way to define social status is based on an objective measure different to subjective measures such as individual's personality, her actions, or her social commitment. This dissertation aims to contribute empirically and theoretically to the relative hypothesis literature. On the empirical side, this dissertation examines the relative utility hypothesis against the absolute utility hypothesis using the households database drawn from the German Socio-Economic Panel. Estimation results indicate that the data are consistent with the relativity hypothesis. More precisely, the individual's utility depends positively on her income and negatively on a reference level of income, which is defined as the Land-average income. On the theoretical side, I study implications of status seeking on: (i) the relation between growth and wealth distribution, and the relation between growth and welfare (ii) the relation between growth and public policy in terms of provision of public capital and protection of the environment. The results underline the role of status seeking in explaining the wealth distribution and the relation between wealth distribution and growth. I also show that the relation between growth and welfare is not increasing and monotonous as in the case without status effects. This finding corroborates the idea that the relative utility hypothesis provides an explanation of the non-positive correlation, observed in empirical studies, between the aggregated average welfare and income per capita. In addition, my results suggest that social competition for improving the social status may be used to explain the trade-off between economic policy and environmental policy, the disparity of the government size in the economy, and the disparity of the growth rate between identical economies

Full textThis thesis is concerned with the effects of inflation on output growth and on its determinants. In the first step, ourstudy analyzes two aspects of the inflation–growth relationship. First, it examines the nonlinearity of the relationshipbetween inflation and output growth and identifies several thresholds for the global sample and for various incomespecificsub-samples. Secondly, it identifies some country-based macroeconomic features that influence thisnonlinearity. Our empirical results substantiate both views and validate the fact that the inflation–growth nonlinearityis sensitive to a country’s trade openness capital accumulation, and government expenditures (chapter 2). After that,we explain this inflation–growth nonlinearity by testing a Tobin effect of inflation on physical capital and asubstitution effect – from work to education – for human capital. We find that the positive effects of moderateinflation rate are due to the Tobin effect on physical capital whereas a weak negative effect of high inflation ratestems from a better human capital accumulation. We identify a strong role of well developed financial systems in allthese mechanisms (chapter 3). Lastly, we address a lack of coherence between the macro based optimal inflationthresholds for output growth and the actual preferences of central banks around the world. We notice that centralbanks use micro based New-Keynesian models and their optimal inflation rate is the one that minimizes dispersionsin factors and product markets. We test the effect of inflation on relative price variability and output growthvariability and, for all income groups, the results support a slight positive inflation rate to minimize theseuncertainties. For our selected emerging economies, monetary policy regimes also affect these dispersions (chapter4)

Full textThe success of applying a partial cut in northern hardwood stands is based on the contribution of harvested and residual trees to overall stand growth, which can be captured by a stand-level criterion called the growth dominance coefficient (GDC). The main objective of this study was to test the relevance of using the GDC to evaluate the success of partial cuts applied to even-aged and uneven-aged sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.)-yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) stands. To do this, we first determined whether GDC calculated with two indicators of resource acquisition, stem mass and tree leaf area, produce similar results after partial cutting according to stand structure. Second, using mixed linear models, we determined the effect of selection cuts on GDC in uneven-aged stands over the short and medium term, and we quantified the effects of tree vigour and size before cutting on diameter growth response of trees after cutting. Results indicate that GDC calculated based on stem mass were similar to GDC calculated based on tree leaf area in even-aged stands (p = 0.7200) but were significantly lower in uneven-aged stands (p < 0.001), likely because of a limited ability for crown expansion in large trees. Furthermore, selection cutting in uneven-aged stands did not significantly change GDC in the short (p = 0.7721) and medium (p = 0.8363) term. However, several trees that grew rapidly before cutting responded negatively to partial cutting while many trees that grew slowly before cutting responded positively. Overall, assessing the success of a partial cut seems difficult using a stand-level criterion such as the GDC. Such an assessment, as well as a better understanding of the effects of a partial cut, could, however, be obtained by a more detailed growth analysis performed at the tree or diameter class level.

Full textThis thesis proposes an analysis focused both on inter-port relations and on those governing the international maritime trade elements: ports, hinterland and foreland. In the first chapter, an assessment on hierarchies and relative growth in Europe is made by applying two complementary methods: Markov chains and convergence clubs. These show that there is a growth polarization within a limited number of large ports and a high frequency for those most disadvantaged. This result marks the lack of convergence within European ports. In addition, the phenomenon of "peripheral port challenge" would be exercised here by the small ports on the medium-sized ones, which would strongly contest some literature results on this issue. The second chapter highlights the importance of the relationship between the port and its hinterland and maritime environments. It focuses on the spatial aspect that characterizes these relationships and shows existing disparities between port regions. While Northern Europe is characterized by complementarity, Southern ports have competitive relationships. It also shows that the size of the local market and its proximity to the ports are not systematically good determinants of throughput. However, the accessibility to the market from peripheral port regions is a determining factor and can be explained by the existence of market niches within these areas. The third chapter focuses on maritime connectivity by country, its determinants and the spatial effects that can influence this. The analysis reveals that there are substantial differences between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. It allows, beyond the results of literature, to identify the dominant relationships in each region. Although complementarity and competition may coexist between neighboring ports/countries, this study shows that one may prevail over the other
