Abstract:
Construction management, as an emergent field of research, is yet to have a recognized methodological orientation, characteristic of other more established domains, and therefore builds on the traditional philosophical assumptions of related natural and social science research. The term “Methodological pluralism,” has thus been used to describe the use of a multiplicity of philosophies and methods, compatible with the study of construction phenomena. This study narrows down the philosophical argument in construction management to within the specific domain of cost overrun research, to systematically articulate the shortcomings in the methodological/philosophical tradition embraced by previous studies. Empirical profiling of cost overrun research reveals the predominance of mono-method studies based on questionnaire survey methods, correlative analysis, and archival data modeling techniques, all of which are underlain by positivism. The study argues that such positivist philosophies, although methodologically valid, cannot adequately explain and provide an in-depth understanding of the contextual drivers in construction organizations, that trigger the more tangible technical constructs, leading to the phenomena of cost growth in projects. Joining in the chorus call for methodological pluralism in construction industry research, this study makes a case for critical realism specifically in the context of cost overrun research.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether contemporaneous practices are adequately represented in recent critical care comparative effectiveness research studies. DESIGN: All critical care comparative effectiveness research trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine from April 2019 to March 2020 were identified. To examine studies published in other high impact medical journals during the same period, such trials were subsequently also identified in the Journal of the American Medical Association and The Lancet. All cited sources were reviewed, and the medical literature was searched to find studies describing contemporary practices. Then, the designated control group or the comparable therapies studied were examined to determine if they represented contemporaneous critical care practices as described in the medical literature. RESULTS: Twenty-five of 332 randomised clinical trials published in these three journals during this 1-year period described critical care comparative effectiveness research that met our inclusion criteria. Seventeen characterised current practices before enrolment (using surveys, observational studies and guidelines) and then incorporated current practices into one or more study arm. In the other eight, usual care arms appeared insufficient. Four of these trials randomly assigned patients to one of two fixed approaches at either end of a range of usually titrated care. However, due to randomisation, different subgroups within each arm received care that was inappropriate for their specific clinical conditions. In the other four of these trials, common practices influencing treatment choice were not reflected in the trial design, despite a prior effort to characterise usual care. CONCLUSION: One-third of critical care comparative effectiveness research trials published in widely read medical journals during a recent year did not include a designated control arm or comparable therapies representative of contemporary practices. Failure to incorporate contemporary practices into critical care comparative effectiveness trials appears to be a widespread design weakness.

Abstract:

In this article the focus is on the role of ethics in the research cycle. The author argues that current thinking with regard to ethics in research is very often scattered and limited to certain disciplines and certain activities only. It is also pointed out that research ethics is not only applicable to the actual doing of research but also processes associated with research such as supervision, the commercialization of research and the presentation of research within the public domain.

McPherson, Maggie. "Critical success factors for e-learning in Higher Education : an emancipatory and critical research approach." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14643/.

Full text
Abstract:
For e-Learning to be successful, it is simply not enough that the courses are well designed, that the module delivery adopts appropriate pedagogical approaches, that tutors are well versed in their subject matter areas and are able to facilitate online courses. The intricacy of the various interest groups involved in this process has prompted this investigation into critical success factors for e-Learning. This holistic investigation seeks investigate the whole range of issues that might impact on the success of e-Learning and the key research question to be addressed is 'What are the underlying Critical Success Factors (CSFs) required to support the design, development, implementation and management of e-Learning in HE institutions?' In the context of this research, a compelling justification for adopting a more interpretivist approach is that it is often neither possible nor desirable to engage in research that is purely based on quantification when investigating attributes such as • attitudes, beliefs or judgements. In the context of this research, the goal was to allow the e-Learning CSFs to emerge from the evaluation of factors in the limited sphere of five high level categories, rather than placing a wider focus on the key performance indicators of HE programme provision in its entirety. By adopting a critical research approach, it was possible to elicit views from participants attending a number of international conference workshops in an environment away from their day to day work. The data was collected through focus groups at international workshops and was analysed through thematic analysis using a process of isolating and selectively coding similarities and differences of key issues within a particular aspect of e-Learning as identified by participants emerging from their own professional practice.

Abstract:
This thesis presents detailed methodological guidelines and a comprehensive conceptual framework to guide and to harmonize studies on information quality as a multi-disciplinary object of study. Despite the abundance of literature on information quality, this phenomenon has not been defined clearly and research efforts have failed to address practical challenges resulting from complex contextual situations and technological advancements. This thesis addresses this issue by building a meta-framework for conceptualizing information quality to align research efforts with real world problems. This framework is built on the tenets of applied Critical Realism, Peircian Semiotics and social science methodological guidelines.

Abstract:
Historically the imaginary and the hegemonic thinking, in the Western North globe has been marked by the epistemology and capitalists archetypes. Notwithstanding the design as a practice and discipline seem shielded on a simplistic discourse of functional / communicative efficiency, wandering through multiple aestheticism apparently neutral in relation to the symbolic but in fact they never are because what really happens is that the aesthetic appearance of the generated forms will always be a review of the powers ruling. We start from understanding that the act of creating an aesthetic artefact will also be a movement of inscription in a discursive platform (that precedes it) thus being itself an narrative act and representing a positioning in relation to certain symbolic reality. On the presented reflection Design is seen as a discipline and / or an instrument of action, whose operational relevance tends to question and simultaneously rehearsing a response to not just the question why but also for what? Apparently Design is a content mediator, but also, it is structure, body and idea. We think design praxis as discipline and enrolment tool for critical thought and social transformation. For guiding research in this text, we propose the following question: Can Design form an engagement with the symbolic for them in order to be an active part in the production of critical thinking in the place where it belongs? Methodologically our argument will be present in two different moments: 1. first, exploratory nature where we rescue the draw issues in the practice of design and 2. second, analytical nature concerning the subject issues (graphic and / or utility ) of design and how it incorporates formal rites, political events and social practices of contemporary everyday life. We consider the praxis of design as a discipline and critical thinking enrolment tool as agents of social transformation. With this study we seek to contribute to design’s phenomenology by studying the artefacts of configuration as well as the possible messages they convey and what impact they may have on the social network.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/IFDP.2016.3263

Abstract:
As clusters of state-of-the-art instruments and research enablement services, research cores are not only the cornerstone of research activities at university campuses but also critical assets that provide competitive differentiation for their host institutions. However, these research cores are highly expensive for academic institutions to manage. Despite the growing recognition and impact of these research cores, there are few studies that describe the business models for sustaining and funding research cores or their increasing significance to the larger academic community.
