Full textThis thesis attempts to clarify the possible links between sustainable development commitment of firms and governments and performance. It revolves around two parties. The first part, dealing with the microeconomic aspects, focuses on the link between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), sustainable development transposed to the world of business, and firm performance. The determinants of CSR decisions are central to better understand the CSR-performance link. In particular, chapter 1 shows that firm size determines the level of integration of social and environmental issues by stressing that SMFs, less concerned with CSR compared to larger groups, invest more in issues related to their stakeholders. Chapter 2 explores how corporate governance, in particular the ownership structure affects firm CSR commitment. It shows that the development of CSR initiatives is negatively related to the presence of controlling shareholders. After highlighting that firm size and ownership concentration are key determinants of CSR decisions and potential crucial determinants of the CSR-performance relationship, chapter 3 takes a specific CSR practice: ``the good atmosphere at work", and examines its impact on employees' effort. The results show a negative correlation between the good atmosphere at work and productive effort and the lack of connection with the cognitive effort. These results provide a better understanding of the processes and underlying mechanisms that might intervene between CSR and firm performance. The second part, related to the macroeconomic aspects, examines the relationship between environmental, social and governance (ESG) government's engagement and economic performance. More specifically, the analysis raises two questions. The first concerns the link between non-financial performance and sovereign risk. The argument here is that the concept of sustainable development and/or ESG engagement is reduced to an extra-financial information, that institutional investors use to assess the sovereign risk of the countries. In particular, chapter 4 measures the impact of extra-financial ratings on the performance of bond funds. It shows that macroeconomic factors are not the only determinants of the price of a sovereign bond. Financial markets also include the non-financial performance of States in the sense that good extra-financial ratings reduce the cost of sovereign debt. Chapter 5 constructs a composite index, sensitive to the ESG commitment of States and shows that the impact of ESG factors on the performance of sovereign bond maturities varies according to the dimensions, the regions and selected periods. The second inquiry concerns the effect of ESG practices on economic growth. Chapter 6 explores the causality in the short and long term, between ESG performance of States and economic growth. The results show that these two letters are co-integrated. They suggest that if the ESG performance positively affects the GDP growth rate in the short term, its impact, however is not positive in the long term

Full textAs a fundamental driving force of public economy, public procurement has traditionally been an area of diverse and often competing interests. Such contradictory interests are the efficiency of budgetary management and transparency in public life within national legal systems, free competition and open access of financial stakeholders in award procedures within the European regulatory framework. At the same time, the instrumentalisation of public procurement in order to serve political goals not directly linked to it has triggered considerable debate. The attempt of conciliation of social and environmental considerations with the financial requirements of public procurement law aims at enhancing this legal and financial instrument. The role and the legal means for the integration of social and environmental considerations in public procurement, which serve general interest purposes and overriding European law objectives, have not yet been clarified. The regulatory interventions of the Member States, on the one hand, and the harmonization attempts of the European Union, on the other, create a constantly changing political climate. In that context, the role of social and environmental policies is redefined both within the framework of primary objectives of public procurement law, as well as outside this regulatory framework which is used as a policy tool in this context

Full textStated and revealed measures of preferences, more precisely the willingness-to-pay, are used to approach the demand for some goods in addition to data collected through observations. In this perspective, we use two separate measures of the willingness-to-pay and the social preferences with the main goal of characterizing the demand for Fair Trade labeled food as well as some of the motivations of consumers. In addition, the two studies meet some methodological objectives. A first study applies to the grocery store banana market in Switzerland. It explores the possibilities of comparison between stated choices in a contingent valuation and observed choices. Additionally, the results present an estimation of the average willingness-to-pay for Fair Trade and Fair Trade organic bananas for a small sample of banana consumers. The results show that age and the number of children are significantly correlated to the preference for the Fair Trade label in the sample. The results also show that only a small proportion of answers to the contingent valuation do not match the actual purchase choices, using simple correspondence criteria. The second study is split into two chapters. In the first chapter, the study presents an experimental design which controls for the participants' information about a Fair Trade label product, and tests the effect of information. Within the limits of the design, the results show that price information has the largest impact on the willingness-to-pay compared to information about the label or the producers' revenue. The second chapter completes the description of the experimental design. In addition to the measure of revealed willingness-to-pay for Fair Trade labeled chocolate, the design is aimed at measuring individual altruism to finally test the possible correlation between Fair Trade preferences and some social preferences. The results support this correlation and therefore show that the Fair Trade could buy the consumers' conscience

Full textAs measure of economic policy, price control has alternatively been criticized and experienced. The basic problem is to determine if price control is a main or, conversely, a minor importance means to fight inflation. The aim of this research is, on the one hand, to enlighten the insufficiency of current analyses concerning price control, and on the other, to show why no global disinflation policy can neglect price control. The first part of the thesis underlines the disinflationnary effect of price control on the psychological and economical grounds of inflation, such as expectations, indexation, monetary uncertainty, over-investment, unsufficient competition, and careless firms' management. Therefore, price control appears recommended in some precise cases. In the second part, both theoretical and empirical guidelines for a suitable unrisky price control are defined. The whole analysis brings to the conclusion that price control may also contribute accurately to disinflation in developed as well as in developing countries

Full textThis doctoral thesis forms part of the transportation purchasing process analysis. Several French government schemes have been introduced to raise companies’ awareness (shippers and carriers) regarding the CO2 emissions inducedby the transport of goods. The work achieved during this thesis uses these schemes as a "field study" to explore the impact of public policies and identifies levers that encourage shippers (client companies) to take the environmental footprint of products being transported into greater account

Full textThis PhD thesis analyses the remains of mammals and birds found on four Provençal sites from the first feudal age (10th-12th century, Alpes de Haute-Provence). Almost 45,000 fragments were analysed. Notre-Dame of Allemagne-en-Provence is our main reference site. It consists of an aristocratic residence that was replaced by two successive fortins. At the same time as these occupations, a peasant settlement developed nearby. Two other contemporary seigneurial installations were also treated: the Moutte of Allemagne-en-Provence and the Roca of Niozelles. These three castra are of major interest, as they bear witness to the birth of private "castles" in Provence and to the daily life of the rural elites. Finally, the settlement of Petra Castellana (Castellane) offers a primordial contrast for understanding the functioning and specificities of the peasant community of Notre-Dame.Meat diet of Provence in the early Middle Ages was long misunderstood. This work addresses social, economic, cultural, and environmental dimensions of human-animal relations. For this purpose, the work of related disciplines is widely mobilised. More specifically, the aim is to characterise the production and management strategies of the territory, herds, and animal economy of the rural elites (lords and military). Their dietary behaviours are analysed and compared with those of humble populations to identify similarities, discrepancies, as well as relationships between these different social groups

Full textFor half a century a model (environmental impoverishment Vs enrichment) has been used to examine, mostly in rodents, the modifications triggered by various rearing conditions. It has been shown that these conditions produce biological as well as behavioral changes. Yet, there are many insufficiences, which are highlighted in a detailed theoritical methodological review. To improve this experimental model, the study focuses on the behavioral influences of an enriched environment compared with standard rearing conditions of laboratory rats. To achieve this, individual performances of the subjects were evaluated with exploration, anxiety and learning tests. Results show that rats reared in a more stimulating environment are more active than their standard counterparts. This behavioral reactivity can be attributed to a better adaptibility to novelty, but it also shows enhanced cognitive abilities. In addition, rats were confronted with a situation of social differentiation, in which emerged roles based around the capacity to get food. The confrontation of rats from the same rearing condition leads to a similar role pattern. Yet, the confrontation of rats from both rearing conditions greatly changes the role differentiation : standard rats tend to become food suppliers whereas enriched rats become mostly stealers. This role segragation may be attributed to the difference in the space available in rearing cages, and to the interactions engendered. In short it is apparent that a period spent in an enriched environment not only enables to improve rats' individual performances, but also that it has an effect on social interactions. The consequences of more stimulating rearing conditions are examined, and extrapolatory perspectives are discussed

Full textMalaria has been present in the Comoros archipelago since 1925, when a major epidemic was first recorded in Grande Comore. The islands have been favourable to the development of vectors causing malaria transmission (Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles funestus) due to the high tropical rainfall, high hydrographic density, the suitable environment with forests and wetlands, as well as the construction of water reservoirs in households. This disease has been endemic since the 1970s and a major public health problem until the 2000s. From the end of the 1990s, the Comorian government has decided to implement a strategy to control malaria by anti-malaria vector control and population protection against mosquito bites. In the last twenty years, malaria control efforts have been intensified and for a first time, mass treatment with Artequick has been carried out in Mohéli (2007-2009), Anjouan (2012-2013) and Grande Comore (2013). There has since been a dramatic decline in malaria on all the islands, as Mohéli and Anjouan have entered a pre-elimination phase and Grande Comore is in the control phase. In the first part, this thesis describes the spatial and temporal dynamics of malaria before and after mass treatment in order to understand the impact of different control actions. A mapping of hospital prevalence and incidence of malaria at the district and village levels shows its decline in Anjouan and Mohéli and its persistence in Grande Comore. Spatial autocorrelation tests have revealed a similarity in malaria transmission between neighbouring localities that are forming clusters in Grande Comore. In the second part, it was demonstrated that environmental factors have an influence on malaria transmission, despite the greater importance of control actions. At the district level, simple and multiple linear regression models have been established between the incidence of malaria and land cover / land use patterns of islands and landscape indicators at the village level in Grande Comore. A survey on people's knowledge, practices and vulnerabilities was conducted among 1,288 households in the Union of the Comoros to assess factors of vulnerability that contribute to malaria transmission. Beyond having water reservoirs in households, the waste disposal location would also have an impact on malaria in Grande Comore. The survey revealed that several households on the large island did not take the 2013 mass treatment. This thesis provides a better understanding of the human and environmental aspects of malaria maintenance and thus aims to better target future control actions

Full textThe contribution of permanent grasslands (PG) to agronomic and environmental services is important. However, their low level of subsidies, a lack of knowledge about their management and a disinterest of these surfaces in favour of more productive forage production have accelerated their downturn. The upgrade of these surfaces in forage systems in particular by studying services of PG is an important issue. In this context, the objective of our study was to identify pedoclimatic and management practices descriptors and characteristics of the vegetation relevant to predict these services. Our approach was based on different steps: i) identification and characterization of forage and environmental services relevant to the PG, ii) identification of aptitude criteria (herbage quality, amount of nectar available ...) which allow to assess the degree of achievement of the services, iii) prediction of values for each criterion of aptitude from characteristics of vegetation (botanical and functional composition) and iv) building links between characteristics of vegetation and pedoclimatic (temperature, soil moisture) and management practices (fertilization, date of first cut) descriptors. From the literature survey, expertise and farm surveys we selected the forage and environmental services, the criteria of aptitude, the characteristics of vegetation and pedoclimatic and management practices descriptors. In total, four environmental services and 11 feed services were studied, taking into account the 12 characteristics of the vegetation (botanical composition (presence and dominance of species) and functional composition (life traits and properties of species)), 15 pedoclimatic descriptors (temperature, soil moisture ...) and 19 management practices descriptors (fertilization, intensity of use of grassland...). The study of a national network of 190 grasslands allowed us to show that botanical and functional composition are non-redundant and influenced by different pedoclimatic and management practices descriptors. The functional composition is influenced by pedoclimatic and management practices descriptors while the botanical composition, which uses a larger number of descriptors, is mainly predicted by pedoclimatic descriptors. The model predictions are better for the botanical composition than for the functional composition. The study of this network and of an experiment in control conditions allowed us to evaluate the quality of prediction of criteria of aptitude for forage services from the functional composition (functional types (FT), proportion of grasses, legumes and forbs, middle stage and dry matter content) of the vegetation. The study in a common environment of three grasslands contrasted on FT composition confirms on the whole growth season the differences in quality and production of grassland that are linked to the FT composition. In contrast, at the scale of the national grassland network, FT composition alone is not sufficient to predict the observed differences in production and quality. Other characteristics of vegetation such as the proportion of legumes and forbs, as well as the mean stage of vegetation or the dry matter content also contribute to explain the differences in production and quality between grasslands. Finally, a multicriteria approach allowed us to build an evaluation method of forage and environmental services from the criteria of aptitude. Thus, this thesis work allowed the development of a method to predict the forage and environmental services provided by permanent grasslands from the knowledge of pedoclimatic characteristics, management practices and of simple vegetation criteria

Full textThe study of a selected sample of the past ten years literature points out the relatively reduced part of toxicological practises stemmed from researches on fish early life stages. By evolving the carp embryo-larval model (Cyprinus carpio L), the thesis tries to explore the possibilities of multicriteria and multifactorial toxicological methods. Variuous experimental conditions are tested, especially the ovocytes in vivo preservation, the oxygenation of incubation mediums and the use of hydrophilic vessel walls for the exposure to hydrophobic substances. Different criteria of toxic effects are studied, particularly the total strength influence on survival, mobility and growth of reference solutions and the shape of survival and mobility graphs according to time. A critical of egg-layings quality criteria is realized. Beside classical criteria like survival and growth, other criteria are tested on different molecules and effluents, such as larval mobility, eggs cleavage rythm, hatching and respiratory activity. They are reveal themselves as being sensitive criteria of toxicity and of easy use. The unidimensional pattern of total larval proteins are subordinated to incubation temperature. In the presence of xenobitics non effect has been disclosed in a reliable way. Immunological assays suggest the presence in larvae the antigens crossing with anti universal stress protein antibodies of Escherichia coli. In the field embryo-larval tolerance : pH 6. 9 to 9. 0, calcium superior to 1. 10(-4) to 1. 10(-2) M and humic acids inferior to 500 mg/l, captafol, deltamethrin and DNOC toxicity may vary with a factor superior to 8. This modification could be explained by damage or changes in molecules structure (conformation) and bioavailability, and in embryos and larvae specific receptivity. The bioavailability is modified both by larvae presence and by the nature of solid substrates in touch with solutions

Full textIn the adaptation of their governance models, methods and management processes. In this context, financial institutions are more and more involved in processes of expression, influence and standardization that interfere with their own vision and the ability to act. Such a context could not support either passivity or inaction and should, on the contrary, encourage financial institutions to develop more sophisticated risk management processes and to promote better application. However, the emergence of new sources of risk has made it more difficult to analyze the overall risk incurred by these institutions, hence the need to detect, control and limit it rapidly. This is why a social and governance environmental analysis makes it possible to diversify the sources of information, to refine and qualify the financial evaluation by non-financial criteria, but which participate fully in the development policy in the financial sector. This strengthens the role of risk governance in establishing guidelines and setting a framework for using a more comprehensive approach to risk management. In many cases, information on environmental, social and governance risks is overlooked by financial institutions, especially banks

Full textParticipatory integrated management gained international recognition in Europe with integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) approaches. The movement has spread beyond the European borders and includes the entire Mediterranean basin with the ICZM Protocol under the Barcelona Convention. This research raises the question on the application of standardized environmental management models in distinct geopolitical and socio-cultural contexts. The overall objective of this analysis is to improve the implementation and impact of conservation projects through an improved understanding of social, cultural and geographical dimensions. This research analyzes the complexity of socio-cultural perceptions and dynamics of environmental governance within and between sites (the Rhone delta, France and the Gediz delta, Turkey). Base lines were established for political and administrative contexts, ecological states and socio-cultural perspectives to analyze the similarities and differences. Ninety three qualitative and quantitative interviews were conducted using a purposive sampling methodology. The potential application of integrated participatory management was studied through the lenses of social networks, environmental discourses, and environmental values and perceptions with a geo-governance approach. Using each of these views, we demonstrated that participation is considered, sought and implemented in distinct ways in each site. These differences support the dominant theme of this work: environmental strategies must be adapted to suit site specific contexts. The results are a reminder that we should not overlook local contexts if we want to promote institutional effectiveness

Full textLaunched as part of the Initiative for the Integration of Regional Infrastructure in SouthAmerica (IIRSA), the construction of a “bi-oceanic” corridor intends to link the Atlantic withthe Pacific through the Amazon river. This project finds its roots in the economic assessment that explains “under-development” by the existence of a gap in terms of infrastructure. A unified program of land planning proposed by IIRSA was conceived in order to bridge this gap. The full implementation of this program would reduce trade barriers and integrate marginalized territories to the productive economy. However, the implementation of the“Amazonian axis” raises many environmental and social issues that have sparked a critical discourse regarding the legitimacy of the project as well as opposition movements whose mobilization led, in some cases, to the formation of local conflicts. This study considers the Amazon as a laboratory for the study of a confrontation between two competing paradigms: the conquest of the frontier as a driver of economic growth and the preservation of the “lung of the Earth”. Based on data collected on three of the IIRSA's Amazonian projects (in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru), this study uses a comparative approach on different levels (international, national and local) in order to conduct a cross-reflection on multi-level governance (regional integration, local governance) and to examine power relations between two antagonist development models

Full textThe compatibility of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risks management with the investment management requirements under the investors` fiduciary duties (FD) figures among the key questions in today`s context of a rapid growth of sustainable investment strategies. This question is thus the subject of the ongoing regulatory developments in Europe and the object of recent lawsuits in the US federal jurisdiction. Despite these current legal developments, investors still have no clear answer to this issue, what leaves them inert in the face of these new and unconventional types of risk.In our research, we explore the recent advancements in the EU and the US legal practice aiming to determine to what extent the FD requires ESG risks consideration by investors in their investment management decisions. We identify ESG risks materiality and the effectiveness of risk hedging actions as fundamental elements for the definition of ESG risks management obligations of investors under the FD rule. We design a theoretical representation of ESG risks materiality under the FD law and identify that within the FD legal framework ESG risks are assimilated to financial risks; thus, their management is required only if they are financially material for investments. We also reveal that the FD law requires management of long-term ESG risks, which are sufficiently material considering the applied discount rate, and formulate a FD-compliant discounting principle. Then, through the Case Study of the recent US ERISA ESOP lawsuit, we establish that risk-aversion in the qualification of the effectiveness of ESG risk hedging actions could impede efficient risk management by incentivising investors not to hedge a material ESG risk
