Abstract:

Crisis are extremely difficult to predict and according to Curtin, Hayman and Husein (2005) this is a problem that worsen by the trend in the 1970s and 80s where companies developed managers to be specialists. One example of this trend could be that a finance

director knows only about finance, likewise for the marketing director, the technology director and operations director who all have their specialist fields. This kind of approach will lead to gaps in the management structure, since a finance director who is

driven by profits and earnings per share would most probably lose sight of the bigger picture which will prevent the chances of predicting any crisis (Curtin et al., 2005). This kind of thinking began to change in the 1990s and a new approach came into vogue

where managers were produced to be far more rounded than they were previously, as a generalist (Curtin et al., 2005). Our purpose is to find out how crisis emerge in projects and investigate the role of emotion in crisis management.

The qualitative method is best suited to fulfil our aim since we are interested in individual’s personal experiences and personal reflections related to crisis management. The reason for us not choosing the quantitative method is that we do not wish to measure or create statistical generalizations about crisis management, it is rather to describe the essence of crisis management and issues related to crisis management, also how crisis is perceived from organizations. We therefore performed interviews with respondents that were of interest for our purpose.

With all the information and knowledge gathered throughout our research we believe that when it comes to the abilities of the project managers to predict and prevent crisis, it is correct that managers have different and perhaps better education than 30 years ago

but when everything comes around it is still next to impossible to completely be able to prevent crisis. We came to this conclusion after done our research and realized that even though every project manager who has been involved in any crisis can not completely

prevent the same crisis to happen again.

Abstract:
Although projects and project management has grown to be increasingly influential in all aspects of business operations, project success and efficiency is often harder to measure and arguably harder to execute. Many projects may often change the course of intent, exceed the initial budget, or even finish later than expected. This causes a great debate on the different ways to efficiently manage projects and what actually works best in practise. According to different scholars, some sides mention that traditional methods where planning is completed at the very beginning is the most efficient way to manage projects, while others mention the use of adaptive methods where planning is not ‘set in stone’.  Project management as an academic field is relatively well explored, however as the COVID-19 continues to set restrictions to stop the spread of the virus, academic research to increase the empirical data on project management during the pandemic is needed. This study aims to contribute to this academic field to understand the reasoning behind project management adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, this study will aim to gain understanding to the why’s and how’s of common themes regarding how projects have adapted. The industries this study will focus on will be the Swedish game-development industry and the Swedish heavy industry.  Based on a literature search and review on project management evaluations methods, leadership styles, risk and crisis management, and project management methodologies, semi-structured interviews took place with CEO’s, project managers, and other senior managers in decision making positions, representing a total of six firms with three from each industry. The respondents were categorized based on their industry and if their project was completed or not.  The analysis showed practical similarities in the implementations between projects, such as hygienic aspects in the workplace, remote working, and other practical implementations from the guidelines of the Swedish health authorities. The analysis also found the common theme of project responses being external threat recognition followed by the adaptation of remote working, the expansion of communication and finally the closure of the project. the analysis did however find smaller variations depending on the size of the firm and industry, such that smaller projects did not always need a firm wide remote working unit and that heavy industry projects leaned towards traditional project management methodologies with hints of agile methods, while the game-development projects quite explicitly used agile methods. While the study does contribute to the academic field of project management with empirical data and may provide guidance in future pandemics and similar situations, further research is needed in order to gain a full understanding on the pandemics effect on projects in Sweden, especially through a study covering a larger study size.

Abstract:
This thesis "Influence of changes in the environment of a company on IT projects during the economic crisis" deals with the impact of outside influences and changes in the environment on the course and management of IT projects in a selected organization. The work is conceived as a case study in which three projects are analyzed. In the first two projects, not only the course of the projects is examined, but also the management of individual phases. The shortcomings and errors are then reflected in the proposed procedures of the third project. All stages are compared not only with theory, but also with best practice and the general modern trends in IT. In all three projects there are described in detail the activities in the project life-cycle phases and there are highlighted both good and bad decisions of the project managers. The thesis deals also with the impact of changes on the projects: with the reasons of the changes and the consequences for the projects. To achieve all the objectives, various analytical methods are used, such as observation -- from the point of view of a participant in the projects was evaluated their progress, practical interaction -- engaging in projects and mutual cooperation with the other players, analysis of documents -- from internal documentation to technical papers describing modern trends and, finally, socio-metric survey -- to reveal the impact of the changes on the end users of IS / IT. The contribution of the thesis should include, in the first place, a critical evaluation of the projects and suggestions of better solutions, application of theoretical knowledge in project management, comparison with best practice and latest trends, their discussion, and own research and interpretation of the impact of changes on end users.

Abstract:
Since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, New York in September 2001, the focus on terrorism and the ability of society and organisations to withstand such incidents has sharpened considerably. At the same time, business continuity and dealing with crises have moved to the forefront of organisations' awareness, not least due to improved regulatory requirements and guidelines. However, this thesis contends that the current methodological framework for responding to terrorist incidents is flawed, resulting in the same issues becoming evident, over and over again. It is argued that an awareness and adoption of three key risk and crisis management methodologies: Fink's Crisis Management Methodology, Risk Communication and Isomorphic Learning, could improve the analysis of such incidents and hence better the response in future. Three significant terrorist attacks were analysed within the context of contemporary literature and two factors were found to be the main cause of difficulties in managing the response to each of the incidents: communication and an inability to achieve organisational learning. It was argued that part of the reason for this was that organisations did not consider a link between crisis and terrorist incident response management and that learning from past experiences did not go beyond the most superficial level in most instances. This thesis demonstrated how risk and crisis management methodologies could have addressed each of the issues that were identified in the case studies and clarified the contribution that they could make. Of primary importance was the recognition that events that may appear dissimilar are, on examination, frequently intrinsically similar and hence can provide valuable learning opportunities.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the project manager's experience of crisis management by examining the current situation with Covid-19 and what new challenges they face due to the pandemic. To find out, a qualitative study was conducted with semi-structured interviews. The study's selection process was targeted at project managers from the construction industry. The data material from the interviews was analyzed through a thematic analysis and resulted in five themes. The results of the study show that a crisis management plan is an important tool when a crisis occurs and that project managers with greater experience have an easier time managing their work tasks during a crisis compared with new project managers. The results also show that project managers have encountered several challenges during a crisis such as communication and social presence. A communication plan should be in place in the event of a crisis to make it easier for project managers to delegate tasks and streamline operations. The telework due to Covid-19 also led to a reduction in the personal contact between the project manager and the employee, which created a challenge for project managers to keep track of their employees' well-being.

Abstract:
Reflection is an important team learning activity, allowing team members to process feedback and to learn from experiences. Debriefing methods such as the After Action Review (AAR), proved to increase learning, can be used to guide teams through the process of reflection. This thesis, commissioned by the Creating Collaborative Resilience Awareness, Analysis and Action for Finance, Food and Fuel Systems in INteractive Games (CCRAAAFFFTING) project, aims to investigating how current post-exercise discussions within the CCRAAAFFFTING project support reflection and whether or not AAR could be implemented. This study used an explorative, semi-experimental research design, containing two conditions - the current post-exercise discussions (condition 1) and AAR’s (condition 2). Data was collected through observations and questionnaires. Due to issues regarding validity, data from questionnaires given to participants, as well as comparisons of participants' subjective experiences between the two conditions, could not be used to provide any support for choosing one post-exercise discussion over the other. However, observations showed that the current post-exercise discussion did not support reflection, thus, making it beneficial to implement AAR. Proper implementation of AAR could not only support team learning, but also organizational learning by facilitating the transference of knowledge back to participants home organizations. This transferred knowledge, if used right by the organizations, could help increased resilience. However, AAR cannot simply be implemented, and this thesis concludes with a list of identified recommendations.

Abstract:
Interactional uncertainty is a relevant subject, but very little research has been done about the impacts on cooperation in interorganizational projects. The study focuses on the main question in which ways are interactional uncertainty handled in interorganizational projects. To answer the question an organizational perspective was used to explore in what ways interactional uncertainty affects cooperation within interorganizational projects. This study uses a deductive perspective by examining literature concerning interactional uncertainty, interorganizational project and embeddedness. A case study regarding how interactional uncertainty can be prevented was implemented through a qualitative method. The collection of data consisted of in-depth interviews concerning the themes cooperation, uncertainty, crisis management and trust. This study concludes that interactional uncertainty has an impact on cooperation and that preventative gear can reduce the interactional uncertainty. The study contributes with development and tools for managing interactional uncertainty.

А., and A. A. Karamysheva. "Разработка проекта вывода компании из кризиса на основе стратегии «голубого океана» : магистерская диссертация." Master's thesis, б. и, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10995/94595.

Full text
Abstract:
Relevance of the topic: in modern conditions of a pandemic and the current intense competition, the role of strategic planning determines the stability and stability of the enterprise. The goal is to develop a methodological approach and practical tools for the implementation of the company's anti-crisis strategy based on the “company strategy” strategy using project management technologies. Objectives: to study the theoretical aspects of the basic strategies for getting the company out of the crisis and project technologies in implementing the strategy; analyze the external and internal environment of the company and justify the transition to the "blue ocean" strategy; The project is a project to implement the company's anti-crisis strategy and make recommendations to reduce project risks. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the expansion of the implementation of anti-crisis strategic strategies of the "blue ocean"; adapting the blue ocean strategy as a firm's anti-crisis strategy; improving the methodology for implementing the "blue ocean" strategy through the use of project management technologies. The proposed set of methods for the development and implementation of an anti-crisis strategy SP Karamysheva S.V. Also, the proposed methods can be applied, which are achieved in the search for growth opportunities who want to increase the value of their goods and services for consumers, avoiding direct competition. As a result of solving the tasks, the following conclusions were obtained: As an alternative anti-crisis marketing strategy, the strategy of the “blue ocean” and the analytical tools necessary for developing a strategy were considered: as a strategic canvas, a model of four actions, a lattice “abolish - reduce - increase - create”. Based on the core values of consumers, the need was identified to create a product that has a colorful and attractive appearance and a natural composition without the use of synthetic additives. The chosen strategy of the “blue ocean” allows the company to get out of the crisis situation by reconstructing the boundaries of the market, and also enables the company to carry out market activities, avoiding costly direct competition. And the use of project management technologies in the development of an anti-crisis strategy is to carry out the process of implementation and development at the same time, which is extremely necessary in a crisis. Within the framework of this master's thesis, based on the creation of a new company strategy, recommendations were given for the reconstruction of the market boundaries, which consists in opening a new target market segment, changing the functional and emotional attractiveness of the product for consumers, as well as expanding the product distribution channels.

Abstract:
Traditional project management methodologies are considered rigid and suitable only for environments of little uncertainty. However nowadays increasing number of projects is being developed in high complexity and uncertainty environment, requiring different approaches for project management: less rigid and more flexible. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to present a framework for managing projects under uncertainties, through a systematic literature review. The developed framework, based on the contingency theory, suggests that approaches for project management under uncertainty are, in part, determined by the characteristics of the existing uncertainties. The responses for uncertainty can be driven by the cause or consequence of the uncertainties and those are chosen according to the ability to influence the cause, which is higher for internal uncertainties and lower for external uncertainties. The flexibility of the project management approach, in its turn, is impacted by the uncertainty degree. Six case studies and a pilot case study were conducted in projects with complexity. The cases showed that there is a relation between the source of the uncertainty and the ability to influence, and between the ability to influence and the orientation of the responses. They also pointed out the importance of flexibility to manage uncertainties, combining prediction methods, the instructionism, such as using risk management, and resilience, especially the ability of the management to admit the existence of uncertainties. The cases also indicated that the highest is the project uncertainty, the highest is the need for flexibility. The paper also presents the limitation of the research, and suggestions for further works.

Abstract:
Traditional methods of project management are not appropriate for complex projects anymore. Since projects are becoming increasingly complex and uncertain, interaction between activities and resources is growing in ways not considered by these methods. Nowadays, managers need more agile project management methods that are able to recognize and deal with uncertainty and to produce the expected results. Lean project management, the most recent approach of lean methodology, appears as an alternative approach capable of dealing with complexity and uncertainty. The latest investigations in the field show that traditional methods are still adequate for simple projects, while lean methods are more appropriate for complex projects. This thesis aims to investigate the nature of lean project management and to examine project risk management processes so that managers can assess the complexity of projects before their beginning and decide which method to apply in order to manage them.

Abstract:

Project Knowledge Management and more specifically how organisations capture experiences gained in projects, is a critical topic in order to compete in the knowledge economy. Little attention has been given the catchphrase lessons learned practices as a research area. The purpose of the thesis is therefore to analyse the framework for the project closure phase through a Knowledge Management perspective. The purpose is also to evaluate how new knowledge, captured by project closure documents, can be identified and measured.

To fulfil the purpose, the project closure phase and project closure documents within the project model Practical Project Steering are studied. Through a document study, the framework that the project model gives, and the project closure documents is analysed. The project closure documents are also examined regarding the experiences they capture. This is done by developing an instrument for identifying and measuring new knowledge.

Through the study, it can be established that the project closure phase provides for a link between Knowledge Management and Project Management. It has an important contribution to Knowledge Management since it mitigates the risk of not transferring knowledge to the organisational memory. The use of predefined knowledge domains supports structure, and systemisation in the production of the documents, as well as in the compilation and dissemination of useful knowledge.

New knowledge within the project closure phase can be identified and measured by dividing the documents into isolated pieces of information and using developed criteria to identify, and thereby quantify new knowledge. The instrument is highly reliable since it is ensured that the division of information does not result in any decontextualisation, and since the criteria used are very stable, and still acknowledge the dynamics of knowledge as well as the knowledge context.

By using the measurements on empirical data, problems that are important to acknowledge are identified. There is an uneven distribution of knowledge types acquired by the project closure documents, regardless of their importance; resulting in loss of important knowledge. The difficulty to formalise important knowledge, results in failing to transfer knowledge to an external organisational memory. The difficulty to distribute knowledge sufficiently, results in re-invention of the wheel, and the same mistakes being made twice or more.

Abstract:
Our aim is to investigate and evaluate the efficiency of crisis management in European aviation, and to recommend enhancements. To fulfill this, we mapped the current crisis management plans and created a fictive scenario where a cyber-attack shut down the power at five of the major airports in Europe. Air traffic in Europe was reconstructed to a chosen day; the 16th of September 2013, and the reconstructed traffic situation was used in the scenario. We also created a model, for the purpose of showing the effect of a cut in time for the steps in the crisis management plan may have on the traffic waiting to depart at the closed airports. When using these means, we could implement the crisis management plans on the fictive scenario and make changes to the plans for a new implementation. The existing crisis management plans were compared to the modified plans made by us, and it was found that usage of a common platform for the different stakeholders involved in the crisis could improve the efficiency of the crisis management.

Abstract:
Initial modules review the literature on critical incidents or crises with emphasis on a school context where possible and appropriate. A widely accepted four-stage model is used as a basis for the review. In the field of crisis management, practice appears to be based mainly on clinical judgement and the related best practice literature provides valuable insights. A number of specific programs are discussed which do have some founding in research. For a range of reasons, mental health promotion in the school context is gaining attention and appears a particularly promising area that can be used effectively. A number of interventions are of questionable efficacy. Youth Suicide is considered as an issue of specific importance to schools. In module 4, a skills-based training workshop is developed around a scenario of an evolving crisis. With the intent of giving school staff the skills to undertake the multiplicity of tasks that may be required, the workshop uses evidence-based and best practice recommendations to create a coherent path through crisis situations. The following module takes this process further by creating a comprehensive, step-by-step process for producing a school crisis management plan that sets out how the Crisis Management Team will operate, the tasks it will perform and the support that will be available, Module 6 looks at school safety and the link to crisis management. Critical questions are considered in relation to the value of a safety audit to a school and to the Crisis Management process, and, whether taking actions based on an audit leads to a safer school. Finally, consideration is given to how the school can support recovery after a crisis. Practical actions are identified for immediate and ongoing actions based on particular models where there is some supportive evidence as to effectiveness. Limitations are noted, particularly that much of the research is based on disasters and focuses on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The purpose of this research is to show the opportunities that Business Simulations produce when combining them with Crisis Management in a non-controlled environment. Although, there are some other studies about each topic, but this non studied synergy created shows a much more important and efficient effect when talking about managing a crisis. We used a systematic data collection of relevant articles that talked about each stage of a crisis management, making a vast literature background for each one. A combination and collision of conclusions and studies of each topic, ended up in the main topic of this article, where the authors got to capture the importance and efficiency of the combination strategy between Crisis Management and Crisis Simulation. We found that crisis management literature divides a crisis in three stages: Prevention, Handling and Recovering. These stages allude to the timing of the action to control the crisis, where a pre-crisis action stands for Prevention, in-crisis actions go for Handling and after-crisis actions relate to Recovery. In each stage, a crisis simulation would help firms by improving their reaction time and capacity, their adaptability and reduce costs of a bad decision. Our results are important because other articles talk about these topics separately and the synergy and efficiency that comes with the use of both topics in parallel is not noticed, so the importance of this research would be to note and explain this synergy and efficiency, and make emphasis in how simple can this be implemented.

This written report is part of a design research project which explores crisis as a narrative and how it is communicated within the Swedish public sphere. The project delves into the complexity surrounding Sweden’s national emergency preparedness to war crisis on a holistic level to gain a perspective on the different interplay of power structures. The written report includes a contextual analysis of Sweden’s 2018 brochure If Crisis or War Comes (Om krisen eller kriget kommer) to draw a parallel connection between past and present narratives. The design research process is conducted through artistic and designerly experimentations as a way of exploring and mapping the topic’s complexity. The design research project uses a Swedish emergency shelter room (skyddsrum) as an artistic and overarching metaphor of the cumulated research. The aim of the design research project is to instigate critical thinking and dialogue surrounding the narrative of war crisis from the perspective of change.

The dissertation, entitled Integrated Risk Management Project proposes a methodology for quantitative analysis of project risks by integrating the financial risks such as exchange rate fluctuations, inflation, commodity prices, the quantitative analysis of operational risks. In the study, operational risks are measured through the generation of cash flow scenarios for the project using Monte Carlo simulation. Prices and fees are simulated using an econometric model and incorporated into the scenarios of project cash flow in order to introduce a distribution curve of cumulative probability of the margin of the project. The proposed methodology was applied to the design of a thermal coal. By incorporating this methodology to all projects within the company, we can also assess the risks of the project portfolio, assessing liquidity and financial health of the company. Keywords

Abstract:
High project failure rates result in billions of wasted dollars each year. Project failure does not discriminate by type of project or the industry from which they originate. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies that leaders at a health care organization located in Pennsylvania use to manage projects successfully. This population was selected due to the health care organization's reputation for successful project completion. The conceptual framework for this study was Fiedler's contingency theory. Data were collected by conducting semistructured interviews with 9 project leaders and reviewing project documents provided by study participants. Interviews were transcribed, thick descriptions were obtained, and participants were engaged in member checking. The thematic data analysis process consisted of compiling and coding data, identifying patterns, and organizing themes into relevant categories, iteratively. Findings were organized into 4 thematic categories, which were, essential strategies, relationship management, best practices, and self-attunement. Findings from this study may contribute to positive social change if health care leaders can use the information to enhance their project leadership capabilities. When project managers are successful, the benefits cascade to health care organizations. Leaders of those health care organizations can ensure that important health and wellness services are provided and available to those who need them, fund performance improvement initiatives, resource quality programs, and offer innovative services to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The rise of social media has brought an increasingly open and transparent environment, where everyone can share thoughts and opinions with other people. This new transparent world creates new challenges in many fields. One of these is in the field of crisis management. The question is how companies should handle a crisis in social media. The thesis starts by investigating theory regarding areas affecting crisis management in social media. From this theory; a quantitative survey, qualitative interviews and investigation of secondary data are conducted. This resulted in findings, regarding what is important for companies, concerning crisis management in social media. It is important for companies to monitor social media, to be quick in replying in social media and to reply in a human, non corporate, voice. It is as well important to have a crisis plan, a crisis response team and a main responsible for crisis management in social media. We have seen that it seems like larger companies generally are more prepared for crisis management in social media and that they consequently are better in handling a crisis in social media.

Abstract:
The absence of adequate crisis management strategies in small firms could result in a premature small business closure. A qualitative multiple-case study was used to explore the crisis management strategies that 3 small business owners have used to survive an unexpected operational interruption. The small business owners in this study were from different industries in the southeast region of the United States and each owner owned a business for more than 5 years and had survived at least a single crisis. The theory of crisis management and crisis intervention theory were the conceptual frameworks for this study. Data collection occurred through semistructured face-to-face interviews with small business owners; observations; and a review of company documents comprised of business plans, insurance policies, floor plans, and emergency exit routes. Data were thematically analyzed and then triangulated to ensure trustworthiness of interpretations. The findings included 3 emergent themes: the importance of developing survival strategies; transparency, open communication, and relationship building; and creative thinking as a survival strategy. Recommendations for action include securing adequate insurance coverage, investing in a worker's compensation policy, and maintaining transparent and fluent communications with vendors and consumers. Small business owners who implement survival strategies may contribute to positive social change by continuing to create employment opportunities that improve economic conditions in local communities.

Abstract:
The world is facing a global waste crisis due to half of the waste produced not being collected, treated or safely disposed of. Waste not managed in a proper way causes air and water pollution and has negative health and social impacts on people living or working close to the waste. Alt- hough evidence shows that implementing gender approaches improves environmental issues, and the majority of waste pickers are women, few organisations focused on waste management are implementing gender mainstreaming into their work. This case study examines gender main- streaming within the organisation Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising (WIEGO) in relation to environmental issues. WIEGO is an international organisation working to increase the voice, visibility and validity of the working poor, with a special emphasis on women, with a core project that supports cooperative waste picker women in Brazil. The study was conducted through two interviews on local and international level and the analysis of 20 documents describing WIEGO and its work. The theories and concepts of gender mainstreaming, intersectionality, Feminist Political Ecology and Environmental Justice were used to analyse the results. The study showed that WIEGO was implementing gender mainstreaming in their opera- tive work, in the policy framework and in the waste picker projects in Brazil which has resulted in physical and emotional improvements for WIEGO employees internationally and waste pick- ers in Brazil. <<<
Denna fallstudie undersöker ”gender mainstreaming” i organisationen Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising (WIEGO) i relation till miljöproblem.

Abstract:
The oil crisis of 1974 strikes quite hard the energy consumption. First of all, this crisis has disturbed the daily consumption, the companies which consume a lot of energy (steel, automobile, etc.) Then the State which reduced the oil taxes to settle the public market. The citizens, especially the Parisians who have a little reserve of energy resources may need to change their consumption habits. Reducing the energy consumption in the buildings becomes a necessity and the government has to show the example. The public, new, renewed or restored buildings, display the examples that the government wants to give of its new position. Dealing with the question of energy savings in public buildings, is also showing the governmental interest towards its public sector. See how the traditions and the decisions in the energy management and the new technical means applied to the construction of buildings are the purposes of this research, which highlights this problem and applies it to some of the public buildings realized recently after the oil crisis of 1974 in Ile-de-France

Abstract:
In the contemporary business environment multiple projects are a common way of organising work and they are usually implemented and managed as a portfolio of projects. It is widely recognised that effective project portfolio management delivers a range of strategic benefits and significantly contributes to overall organisational success. However, project portfolio management is acknowledged by both theory and practice to be a highly challenging task which is even amplified by the presence of project interdependencies. Managing project interdependencies is found to be an area of weakness for contemporary portfolio management, which so far remains under investigated but emergent field within general portfolio management theory. Therefore this study presents an empirical investigation that aims to uncover why and how organisations from the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry manage project interdependencies. In order to answer why organisations manage project interdependencies the study examines the benefits of project interdependency management, the negative effects of failed project interdependency management and the related challenges. In order to investigate how project interdependencies are managed this study focuses on the hard and soft practices that portfolio practitioners use. The study is based on cross-case analysis of two case organisations operating within the ICT industry in Italy. The ICT is chosen as an excellent ground for studying project interdependency management since it is of significant importance for the contemporary world’s economy where project and portfolio management is practiced intensively. Qualitative data is collected via semi-structure interviews. The key findings apply to both case organisations demonstrating their similar reasons and manner of managing project interdependencies. The research findings show that there are various types of project interdependencies in the project portfolios that practitioners need to account for and that effective management of these interdependencies delivers significant benefits contributing to the portfolio success, while failed interdependency management distorts the portfolio success. The study indicates potential challenges that project interdependency management may encounter and confirms that comprehensive consideration of project interdependencies is a rather complex task within a project portfolio management. In order to manage issues arising from interdependent projects and leverage related benefits, organisations implement the following hard practices: web application platforms and tracking tools; and soft practices: formal and informal PM meetings, creation of a cooperative culture, leadership, negotiation and convincing and sacred cow. These practices are examined along with their benefits, limitations and context of their application. Although both hard and soft practices are found to be important in the case organisations, the preference is given to soft ones, mainly because of the benefits that soft practices offer over hard ones and the fact that the indicated hard practices allow only identification of project interdependencies, but do not provide managerial solutions per se. Therefore similar organisations operating within ICT industry may find it useful to devote attention to soft practices as they are found to be a prevailing mechanism for managing project interdependencies. The combination of hard and soft practices can also be seen beneficial for realisation of effective project interdependency management.

Abstract:
Utilizing information technology (IT) to enable new organizational capabilities to achieve near-term objectives and long-term sustainability is a top priority for many business leaders seeking to maintain or increase market share. However, organizational leaders face significant challenges to their strategy execution because the percentage of challenged IT projects has remained relatively static for decades. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore risk management strategies used by 7 purposely selected IT project managers (PMs) from a pharmaceutical company located in the northeastern United States who have effectively managed IT project performance by using risk management strategies, leading to the successful delivery of an IT project. The conceptual framework that guided the research was actor-network theory. The data collection included semistructured interviews and the collection of internal organizational risk registers and other project risk management documentation. An inductive content analysis followed the procedures outlined in Malterud's systematic text condensation strategy, yielding the following major strategies to increase IT project performance: performing knowledge management, promoting a positive risk culture, utilizing an existing risk management framework, and performing risk-related communication. The implications for positive social change include the potential to help IT PMs deliver the expected business value on time and within budget, which, in turn, may enable pharmaceutical companies to improve the quality of life of afflicted individuals and populations in need of safe, economical, and innovative therapies.

Abstract:
The conventional view of project management is challenged by a contemporary construction industry that is rethinking its processes and procedures as it seeks to align itself with clients' business needs. Project managers must update their skills. They require flexible education and training that complements work place experience rather than distracts from professional obligations. Educational technology offers an exciting opportunity to accommodate these, often conflicting, requirements. Computer-aided learning (CAL) is supported by a government keen to promote a Learning Society, the expansion of Higher Education (HE) postgraduate provision and the construction industry's own initiatives to engender a culture of lifelong learning. Enthusiasts argue that CAL provides greater access, enhances quality and overcomes the inherent disadvantages of distance learning. Yet the apparent eagerness to develop innovative CAL applications is not evidenced in an educational survey of built environment postgraduate course provision. On the contrary, only small pockets of CAL activity are available. A new distance learning project management educational software application (DIMEPM) is developed and compared with a traditional multiple media resource and a well-established postgraduate module delivered in part-time mode. The design of DIMEPM draws on the expertise of experienced practitioners in HE and the views of leading academics in the field. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed in a longitudinal evaluation that assesses the relative learning gains, student attitude and confidence of HE students. And, in order to gain reaction from industry, DIMEPM is subjected to an illuminative evaluation within a leading engineering and project management consultancy. The research study finds no significant difference in the academic performance of students in the control and experimental groups. However, it is clear that technically orientated tasks lend themselves more readily to CAL than interpersonal skills. Distributed educational packages provide opportunities for enhancing distance learning but alternative pedagogic approaches are needed to encourage web-based dialogue and promote vicarious learning. Practitioners suggest that the distinction between these alternative delivery methods is artificial and that an integrated approach should be explored. Crucially, the research identifies considerable advantage in linking outcomes to delivery mechanisms and advocates the use of an "Associated Delivery" model.

Organizations perform work essentially through operations and projects. The characteristics of projects makes them extremely difficult to manage: their non repetitive nature discards the trial and error learning, while their short life span is particularly unforgiving to misjudgments. Some authors have found that effective scheduling is an important contributor to the success of research and development (R&D), as well as construction projects. The widely used critical path method for scheduling projects and identifying important activities fails to capture two important dimensions of the problem: the availability of different technologies (or options) to perform the activities, and the inherent problem of limited availability of resources that most managers face. Nevertheless, when one tries to account for such additional constraints, the problems become very hard to solve. In this thesis we propose an approach to the scheduling problem using a genetic algorithm, and try to compare its performance to more traditional approaches, such as an extension to a very innovative Lagrangian relaxation approach recently proposed. The purpose of using genetic algorithms is twofold: first to obtain good approximations to very hard problems, and second to realize the limitations and virtues of this search technique. The purpose of this thesis is not only to develop the algorithms, but also to obtain insight about the implications of the additional constraints in the perspective of a project manager.

Abstract:
Project management approaches are commonly used to write and implement business plans. In this thesis standard project management tools and methods are applied to a real project, which aims to improve the properties of the product it offers (an online educational game). This project is unique in that it is based on a voluntary basis, has limited resources and is very responsive to market demands. Project management is broken down into four stages according to the project life cycle: initiation, planning, execution and completion. In this thesis only the first three phases are discussed and the greatest emphasis is placed on the planning phase, in which different methods (CPM, PERT) are used to determine whether the project can be completed on time. The outputs of the time analysis are followed by a resource analysis, in which the total duration of the project is estimated more accurately. The execution phase uses the methods of decision theory to solve the problems that might arise during the project implementation and evaluates the use of elaborated plans.
