Full textAt the crossroads of the sociology of work, trade unionism, political crises and gender studies, this thesis, based on a long-term ethnographic survey of labour conflicts in international subcontracting, aims to shed new light on the reconfigurations of the Tunisian workers' movement during the revolutionary process that began in December 2010. While social science research on political crises in the Maghreb and the Middle East is abundant, the world of work remains a blind spot. Yet, during this period, Tunisian workers have massively burst onto the political stage: interrupting production, forming trade unions, occupying and sabotaging workplaces, and sometimes getting engaged in hunger strikes. This multi-site survey carried out in the textile, call centre and electronics sectors in Tunis, Mahdia, La Chebba and Sousse, enables us to grasp the workers' movement in its many dimensions: that of the protagonists, the companies and the union structures, and at the intersection of the social relations that run through it. While revolutions are mainly studied through the lens of social ruptures, this study, by seeking to sequence the events marking the workers' movement, reveals both its transformations and its continuities: its rhythms, its forms, its possibilities and its protest closures varying from one sequence to the next. In close contact with those involved in the struggle, this survey also highlights variations within each sequence: certain conflicts that were part of the same action repertoire did not lead to the same outcomes; some mobilizations were more inventive than others; some players were excluded from the union arena, while others made a “career” of it. A gendered reading of these dynamics is essential to understand them

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to model the Tunisian economy in a post Keynesian stock-flow consistent approach in order to provide an analysis of the observed stylized facts since 2001. This kind of post Keynesian macroeconomic model retains not only the stock dimension but also the flow dimension of the Tunisian economy. Thus it is a new framework for analyzing the effects of the financial and economic crisis of 2007-2008 and economic consequences resulting from the recent Tunisian revolution of 2011. Six sectors make our economy: households, firms, banks, central bank, government and the rest of the world. The rest of the world represents the European Union given the strong dependence of the Tunisian economy on European economies. In order to explain the trend of the Tunisian GDP, four shocks are considered namely the impact on the growth rate in European Union to take into account the global crisis, the changes in interest rate and exchange rate to explain the impact of monetary policy and the response of fiscal policy and finally the shock in the state of confidence and productivity to understand the effects of the economic crisis during the Tunisian revolution. These four shocks have allowed us to reproduce the stylized facts of the Tunisian economy and understand the effects of the crisis of the last decade. Then we consider three scenarios for the Tunisian economy: an optimistic scenario, a pessimistic scenario and intermediate scenario

Full textApplied under the European influence, aiming at the westernization of the systems of the state and promising of legal equality between the Muslims and the non-Muslims, the said reforms Tanzimat looks very polemical in the XIXth century. The idea of equality between the confessional communities makes its road. In the Regency of Tunis, a reforming movement similar to that of the Ottoman capital begins to bloom. Therefore, all these changes made during this period transform the religion into a political stake. Consequently, the big religious dignitaries see each other strongly sought by the politicians in Tunis and in Istanbul. The rule of the sultans and the beys must be put in accordance with God's law, quite as the Moslem society had to follow the divine outlaws. Supposing that it is the case, our study concerns the role played by the heads of the ulemas in Tunis and in Istanbul, namely the Seyhs ül-Islam of Istanbul and the big muftis of Tunis, in this process of reform

Full textUrban planning in Tunisie begain in the early 2000s with the arrival of forgein donors around the urban margins in the metropolis of Tunis. The Tunisian waterfront has been partially developed, with strong inequalities between the northen and southern shores. Despite constrained blockages, delays, and even partial stops, the first project (North Lake Banks), survived the last “crises” in Tunisia - the global financial crisis (as early as 2008) and the “political crisis” resulting from the 2011 Revolution. However, the second major project (South Lake Banks) remained on hold. In the meantime, project companies were set up, in partnership with foreign investors (the SPLT and the SEPTS). How do the projects of the Lake of Tunis relate to the urban planning of the Greater Tunis? How do project companies relate to the existing international structure? Based on a study of emporality and project internationalization, we hope to demonstrate the adaptability of planning, practices, and urban planning projects to both constraints and opportunities and to illustrate the reasoning behind land and property development on the processus of metropolization in Tunis. Finally, we carried out an evaluation of the urban quality between the “designed” and the “realized” from the representations and practices of users on the banks of the North Lake

Full textRevolution, which embodies major turns in the course of history, has for a long time been a social study subject. With the coming of the school of public choice in the 1960's, a new economic current helped to undestand revolution. Many economists such as: James M. Buchanan (1962), Gordon Tullock (1971-1974) and John E. Romer (1985) have applied economic theory to social and political science using tools developed by microeconomy. The goal of my research paper is to highlight the contribution of economic theory in the understanding of revolution. I have first drawn a line between two approaches that have studied revolution: The sociological approach which mainly explains why do people revolt when they are faced with structural imbalances. The economic approach which uses the theory of rational choice to demonstrate how people choose to be passive when they are confronted with a revolution

Full textThe present thesis deals with the problem of water irrigation in the peri – urban oases of the district of Gabes. Through a look-back at the past , the thesis tries to focus on the existing relations between the scarcity of water resources , the great social changes as well as the ways of management of this resource hence the reorganization of the agricultural system within the oasis. Being located close to a coastal area increasingly attractive that resulted in an urbanization wave the rural oases are facing an unprecedented shift caused by human pressure due to rural drift. Consequently, this shift has put the oases face to a paradox. As a matter of fact, this research is mainly interested in the current dynamics as well as in the social, agricultural and spatial diversity in the midst of the oasis of Gabes. It also reveals that the severe decline of agricultural activities, caused by either abandoning this traditional work or by urban expansion, has not prevented the advent of some new strategies of adaptation that would fit the new urban, economic and social context. However identifying the various contributors to water management on the local level , their logic and the modality of governing of the water resources which are linked to the social, economic and political choices of our country( decentralization- disengagement –privatization – contribution ) permits to better understand the nature and the level of both the economic and political factors at stake. The conclusion shows that the water scarcity in the oasis is not only physical but it is also the result of the overexploitation of the resources in addition to its governance mode. Unfortunately, the “ Group of collective interest” GIC which is a social structure created by the State in order to ensure a both reasonable and fair management of water, turned to be the main cause of its scarcity , waste ,debt and the discrimination between users. Thus it is recommended that a suitable policy be based on sustainable development of the oases as multifunctional heritage where the environmental, the economic, the social and the cultural aspects are kept in perfect harmony

Full textEver since the 2011 Tunisian Revolution, participation in the political process amongst the citizens of Tunisia has been characterized by a high degree of neophytism. Included amongst these new participants partaking in these newly available political rights are high levels of internationally based Tunisian transnational’s. Our research is interested in the unprecedented politicization of Tunisians residing abroad away from Tunisia. Our interest focused on the construction of Tunisian political transnationalism, within a new contextual paradigm of the recent democratization of their country of origin. Our theoretical work as based upon the usage of various inter-disciplinary methods, which required the use of multi-methodological approaches for the necessary level of effective empirical investigation. To do this, we created an inventory of research on the evolution of transnationalism available both scientifically and institutionally. Utilizing the Questionnaire, we explored a sample of 300 voters from a distance of three agglomerations in the Rhône-Alpes region, differing in population size based upon the number of inhabitants residing within them. We were primarily interested in their motivations for participating in remote voting. We used the semi-directive interview method to be able to deeply understand the representations, attitudes and identities of a diverse group of interviewees. This included transnational activists, candidates, and deputies from abroad residing in France who originatedfrom the same mother country of Tunisia. This research has allowed us to notably observe, amongst other things, a form of liminality that is characteristic of the transitional situation experienced by Tunisian transnational’s politically. This is specifically seen with regards to their passage from being disempowered politically to being individually empowered. Within the context of rapid political change in their country of origin, the political and electoral neophytism of many Tunisian transnational’s isrepresentative of a politicization process still in the making
