Abstract:
AbstractThe Radzinowicz Library is the specialist criminology library of the Institute of Criminology, a research and teaching department of the University of Cambridge. As Stuart Stone explains, it is the premier academic criminology collection in the United Kingdom and indeed it is one of the major collections in this subject in the world. The library primarily serves the Institute and the University but also the wider community of criminal justice researchers, many of whom are regular visitors. In common with other libraries, financial pressures are a continuing concern, especially because of the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Outreach and engagement with organisations outside academia add to the distinctive characteristics of the library.

Abstract:
The development of ‘Australian criminology’has been the subject of some comment in the last decade, in common with a recent interest internationally in the formation of the discipline. An influential account by Carson and O'Malley (1989) placed much emphasis on the erosion of criminology's critical potential by a mix of political, intellectual and professional currents in post-war Australia. On the basis of a review of evidence in the papers of Sir John Barry, it is argued here that the establishment of Australia's first academic criminology department, at the University of Melbourne, was characterised by a greater openness to critical and inter-disciplinary inquiry than might be expected. This study suggests the need for a more detailed scrutiny of the formation of the discipline in Australia and elsewhere.

Abstract:
Our aim in this work is to: (1) determine how distinct the program structure and curriculum content for graduate education in Criminology was compared to Criminal Justice; and (2) evaluate whether the diversity or consistency of the curriculum in either field varied depending of what type of department was offering the degree. Differences in department titles, hours required for the M.A. degree, program descriptions, curriculum content and curriculum content by department type between M.A. programs in Criminology and Criminal Justice were examined. The results suggested there is both consistency and difference in program structure and in curriculum content across the two fields of study.

Abstract:
Criminologists are often frustrated by the disconnect between sound empirical research and public policy initiatives. Recently, there have been several attempts to better connect research evidence and public policy. While these new strategies may well bear fruit, I believe the challenge is largely an intellectual one. Ideas and research evidence must guide public policy and practice. In this article, I present highlights from my tenure as the Director of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the research, development, and evaluation agency in the Department of Justice. One of the ideas that I emphasized at NIJ was “Translational Criminology.” I believe translational criminology acknowledges NIJ’s unique mission to facilitate rigorous research that is relevant to the practice and policy. I also discuss the challenges I faced in bringing research to bear on public policy and practice. I end with a call for my colleagues in criminology and criminal justice to become more involved in government.

Abstract:
Patients with paranoia have always been a group of exiting but daunting patients for mental health professionals. Indeed, the risk of a violent acting out with important aggressive discharges confers to these patients an elevated dangerosity potential. If various criminological aspects of violence in paranoia have been described, their link to functional prognosis of patients have been seldom addressed.AimTo determine if criminological details of violence acts in paranoia patients predict their functional prognosis.MethodsA retrospective, descriptive and analytic study have been conducted, based on a chart consult. Twenty-three patients with paranoia (i.e. Chronic delusional disorder type jealousy or erotomania in DSM IV) patients have been included. These patients have been hospitalized in the forensic psychiatry department of Razi hospital of Tunis (Tunisia), between 1995 and 2015, after not being held by reason of insanity, according to article 38 of the Tunisian Criminal Code.ResultsDelusional disorder types were: jealousy (17), persecution (4), erotomania (1) and claim (1). The majority were married (18), undereducated (17), with irregular work (13). Forensic acts were uxoricide (15), attempted murder (5), violence against people (2) and destruction of public properties (1). Patients used bladed weapon in most of the cases (13), in the victim's residence (19), with premeditation in (17) of the crimes. Only 5 patients worked regularly after discharge.ConclusionIf our results expose further data concerning potential dangerosity of patients with delusional disorders, they also highlight the marginalized situation of these patients when released back into society.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to bring the most important achievements of Bialystok School of Criminology closer to the readers. The Faculty of Law of the University of Bialystok, specifically the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology, is one of the leading Polish academic entities conducting extensive research in the field of criminology. In 2016, in the ranking organized by the Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper, the Faculty received the highest score of all the evaluated Polish universities which have law faculties, both state and private, in the area of international cooperation. What is more, Bialystok is the leader in the 2017 ranking of the 25 faculties of law of Polish universities, prepared as a result of the most important evaluation performed every four years by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and was awarded the highest (A) category. The paper presents not only the international criminology conferences and research that Bialystok School of Criminology has been part of, but also its own initiatives both at the national and international level. For example one of the pioneering ventures on a national scale was the 1st Poland-wide Forum of Young Criminologists held by the Faculty of Law of the University of Bialystok as a regular event. One of the most impressive recent initiatives of BSC was the creation of the International Centre for Criminological Research and Expertise. The paper contains more information about the projects mentioned and others as well as an introduction to the diverse and interdisciplinary topics undertaken by Bialystok’s criminologists.

Abstract:
A central part of the brain’s limbic system, the amygdala is crucial for emotional learning, aversive conditioning, and response to fear and other emotions. Although the amygdala is a vibrant area of study in the neurosciences, it is virtually ignored in criminology. Here, we review the anatomical location, connectivity, and functions of the amygdala, explore its role in James Blair and colleagues’ recently advanced theory of psychopathy, explicate amygdala abnormalities in diverse populations, and explore genetics research relating to amygdala functioning. Because of its role in the regulation of fear and other emotional memory and response, the amygdala is importantly related to psychopathy; callous-unemotional traits; and the vibrant, neuroscience-based investigations of the etiology of antisocial behavior.

Full text
Abstract:
Left realism emerges in the early 1980s as a separate department, or direction within the neo-Marxist critical criminology. It results from dissatisfaction and certain criticisms of the foundations on which critical criminology is built, which left realists call left idealism. Namely, they are called realists because, in their view, crime should be considered in its reality, and the causes that led to criminal behavior should be seriously looked at, which means that leftist realists focus on already experienced realities. Hence, the issues of interest to left realists are the problems faced by certain groups regarding their age, class, sex, race and place of residence. They have some similarities with structural subcultural theories, arguing that crime is a form of subcultural adaptation to lived problems and realities. The basis is that due to material constraints and circumstances, the required cultural goals and aspirations cannot be achieved by legally disposable means. The central postulate of left realism is to reflect the reality of crime, in its origin, nature and influence. This means that crime cannot be romanticized or it cannot be explained as a product of the offender's pathology or other personal characteristics. Real problems related to the crime need to be considered and resolved. In this respect, the issues of left realism are the problems that citizens face, the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator, the geographical distribution of crime, as well as the prevalence of crime in certain social areas and sectors of the community. They are particularly concerned about ignoring the crime that is taking place on the streets by truly disadvantaged and marginalized citizens, as well as the crime that takes place behind closed doors, particularly in the family. So, the perspectives of the left realists are that street crime is a serious problem for the working class, working class crime is primarily committed against other working class members, relative poverty feeds the dissatisfaction and that dissatisfaction, in the absence of political solutions creates crime, and crime can be reduced by implementing practical social policies. On the basis of what has been stated, in this paper we will elaborate the critiques of critical criminology stated by the proponents of Left Realism , a Square of crime that offers appropriate solutions for criminal and social response to crime and perspectives of left realism that predominantly rely on community-based policies.

Abstract:
An approach for crime detection in India using Data mining techniques is proposed in this paper. The approach consists of the following steps - Data pre-processing, clustering, classification and visualization. Data mining techniques are often applied to Criminology as it provides good results. Criminology is a field which studies about various crime characteristics. Analyzing crime data means exploring crime data. Crime is identified using k-means clustering and the clusters are formed based on the similarity of the crime attributes. The Random Forest algorithm and Neural networks are applied on the data for classification. Visualization is achieved using the Google marker clustering and the crime spots are marked on the India map. The accuracy is verified using WEKA tool. This approach will benefit the Crime department of India in analyzing crime with better prediction. The paper focuses on the crime analysis of various Indian states and union territories during 2001 to 2012.

Abstract:
The pandemic has brought challenges both to students and teachers in higher education. This study determined the level of satisfaction and difficulties encountered by criminology students at Saint Mary’s University Bayombong Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines during their online modality of learning. A quantitative, inferential, and descriptive research design was used among sixty (60) respondents from sophomore to senior criminology students. The study found that criminology students were satisfied with the methods of teaching, teacher’s class requirements, teaching platforms, teacher’s consideration, time schedule of classes, and student support from the department and that they experienced difficulty to a moderate extent with the gadgets used in online classes and availability of academic resources, Respondents have a neutral level of difficulty in terms of financial source, the strength of internet signal and time availability for doing class requirements. There is a significant difference in their level of satisfaction in terms of their year level in relation to the teachers’ method of teaching, teaching platforms, teachers’ consideration, and with their internet connectivity. There is also a significant difference in their level of difficulty in online learning when the students were grouped according to their year level, financial source, gadgets, and time schedules of classes; internet connectivity when it comes to financial source, internet signal, gadgets, and academic resources; and gadgets used (Laptop) when it comes to internet signal and academic resources.

As little is known about the influence of COVID-19 on rates of violent crime, the purpose of this study is to examine violent injury captured by emergency department admissions and by law enforcement in a mid-sized midwestern city (Omaha, Nebraska) from January 2016 to December 2020. Although COVID-19 did not show a direct significant relationship, weeks during the COVID-19 period showed a marginal increase in incident rate ratios for violent incidents in both datasets. While violence remained stable during the pandemic, racial differences between samples were observed. This study emphasizes the utility of a transdisciplinary approach to understand the underlying drivers of violent crime and victimization.

Abstract:
Professor R.S. Belkin's role in the development of criminology and forensic science is widely recognized. The theory he advanced to connect criminalistics and the natural sciences was of great importance for the establishment of new forensic disciplines. During his time as head of the department of forensic science theory Professor Belkin focused on newly emerging fields of forensic research and the development of their theoretical foundations. His vision was marked by a deep understanding that ecology is a subfield of biology, but forensic ecology is not part of forensic biology. It is largely due to his talent to anticipate the emergence of new trends in response to the needs of investigative practice that these forensic disciplines were established and continue to develop.

Abstract:
By definition, our interactions with those that we consider to be ‘extradisciplinary’ are predicated on our own self-identification as archaeologists. It isn’t news that some stakeholders react negatively to archaeologists. To them, we are not neutral, well-meaning stewards of the past, but rather a competing group that doesn’t compromise and stifles dissent by claiming a mandate on defining ‘the public good’. How can I effectively engage with such groups when my identity as an archaeologist is unforgivable?Perhaps the archaeologist must leave archaeology. This paper is about transitioning from a PhD in archaeology to apost doctoral fellowship in a criminology department. As part of theUniversity of Glasgow’s Trafficking Culture project, I study the looting of archaeological sites and the illicit trafficking of cultural property. For half a century archaeologists have clashed with antiquities intermediaries, collectors, and dealers leaving wounds and scars on both sides. These folks will not engage with an ‘archaeologist’, but they are willing to talk to a ‘sociologist’ or even a ‘criminologist’ which is how I now present myself. This paper will focus on the ethical issues of disciplinary labelling. What are the primary benefits of presenting myself as ‘extra-archaeological’? Of not asserting archaeological expertise? Am I obliged to reveal my archaeological background? Does this change of discipline have a tangible effect on the research that I conduct? Do I protect cultural property or protect informants? Am I still an archaeologist?

The fear of crime is an established research topic, not only in sociology, environmental psychology and criminology, but also in GIScience. Using spatial analysis to analyse patterns, explore hotspots and determine the significance of respective surveys is one reason for the increase in popularity of such research topics for geographers, cartographers and spatial data scientists. This paper presents the results of an intensive online map-based questionnaire with 1551 respondents from the city of Ostrava, Czech Republic. The respondents marked 3792 points associated with the fear of crime over a ten week period. The perception data were compared with recorded crime data acquired from police department records for the years 2015–2018. This paper explores the spatial autocorrelation from perceived hotspots and from recorded crime hotspots. Our findings fit into the literature confirming results about the locations that most frequently attract fear, but there is still room for more investigations regarding the links between recorded crime and the fear of crime.

How does he assess evidence in the form of an environmental interview or a diagnostic opinion, and which one is used in the process of adjudication? Abstract Stroke has become a major disease seriously threating human health due to its high morbidity, mortality and disability. Rehabilitation nursing care for stroke patients has always been a key part of clinical care. The neurological nursing managers should pay high attention to the issue about how to more effectively improve the level of nurses’ rehabilitation nursing on stroke patients. Therefore, this paper investigates the current cognition of neurological nurses about stroke knowledge, attitude and behaviour, and then analyses the factors affecting the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of stroke in the nurses, in order to provide better nursing services for stroke patients, and improve their nursing quality. The findings show that the different cognitions of nurses about their role have different effects on the knowledge, attitudes and behavioural levels of the neurological nurses; the nurses with more types of roles have better knowledge and behavioural levels of stroke.

Abstract:
During the past decade, web-based distance education has created a profound impact on education and learning. It has increased access and expanded educational opportunities of many students. The National Center for Educational Statistics reported that over 50% of post-secondary institutions now offer a number of web-based courses. Peterson’s Guide to Distance Learning programs reported that over 75 programs in criminal justice or criminology. Although increasing number of courses are being offered through the web-based distance modality, it is however important to determine the perceptions of students to its use. The study therefore attempted to determine the perceptions on web-based distance education by students in the justice studies department at a Historically Black University. The Chi Square and correlational analysis revealed that age-group, gender, year in school and study time were statistically significant. A binomial regression with student’s major as the outcome was most robust with an R-Square of 0.522. Gender, study time and year in university were statistically significant at the .05 level and having done a web-based distance course. There was therefore a statistically significant variation in the perceptions of the students in justice studies towards web-based distance education.

Abstract:
Crimes and criminal activities are increasing day by day and there are no proper criteria to search, detect, identify, and predict these criminals. Despite various surveillance cameras in different areas still, crimes are at a peak. The police investigation department cannot efficiently detect the criminals in time. However, in many countries for the sake of public and private security, the initiation of security technologies has been employed for criminal identification or recognition with the help of footprint identification, fingerprint identification, facial recognition, or based on other suspicious activity detections through surveillance cameras. However, there are limited automated systems that can identify the criminals precisely and get the accurate or precise similarity between the recorded footage images with the criminals that already are available in the police criminal records. To make the police investigation department more effective, this research work presents the design of an automated criminal detection system for the prediction of criminals. The proposed system can predict criminals or possibilities of being criminal based on Lombrosso's Theory of Criminology about born criminals or the persons who look like criminals. A deep learning-based facial recognition approach was used that can detect or predict any person whether he is criminal, or not and that can also give the possibility of being criminal. For training, the ResNet50 model was used, which is based on CNN and SVM Classifiers for feature extracting from the dataset. Two different labeled based datasets were used, having different criminals and noncriminals images in the database. The proposed system could efficiently help the investigating officers in narrowing down the suspects' pool.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a performance evaluation method of public administration departments based on the improved DEA algorithm, which solves the quality problem of performance evaluation of public administration departments and lays a foundation for the long-term development and performance improvement of public administration departments. The DEA model is the core to sort out the performance evaluation methods of public administration departments. From the perspective of DEA algorithm, whether DEA is effective is an important content that public administration departments must consider when carrying out performance administration, and public service satisfaction is the core parameter obtained by DEA algorithm. That is to say, by optimizing public services and improving service satisfaction, the public administration department can further improve the quality of performance evaluation. Therefore, we can carry out performance evaluation of public administration departments from the satisfaction of public services. The empirical research conclusion shows that according to the effective judgment theorem of DEA, it can be concluded that among the eight social security departments, there are five departments that can achieve DEA effectiveness, namely department 2, department 3, department 4, department 5, and department 6. There are three non-DEA valid ones, namely, department 1, department 7 and department 8. The public satisfaction and the total service cost will affect the performance quality to a certain extent, and only by balancing various influencing factors can the performance evaluation quality of the public administration department be maximized.

Abstract:
Abstract Acute alcohol intoxication is responsible for a sizable share of emergency department visits. Intoxicated individuals without other medical needs may not require the high level of care provided by an emergency department. We estimate the impact on U.S. health care spending if individuals with uncomplicated, acute alcohol intoxication were treated in sobering centers instead of the emergency department. We performed a budget impact analysis from the perspective of the U.S. health care system based on published and gray literature reports. Ninety-five percent confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using Monte Carlo modeling with random variation for three variables (cost of an emergency department visit, cost of a sobering center visit, and start-up costs per sobering center visit) and the percentage of cases diverted from emergency departments to sobering centers. Outcomes were expressed in terms of national savings in 2017 U.S. dollars. Assuming a diversion rate of 50% based on previous studies, national savings range from $230 million to $1.0 billion annually. In the Monte Carlo modeling, we found annual national savings of $99.02 million (95% CI: $95.89–$102.19 million), $792.34 million (95% CI: $767.09–$817.58 million), and $1,185.51 million (95% CI: $1,150.64–$1,226.37 million) with diversion rates of 5%, 40%, and 60%, respectively. Implementing sobering centers as a treatment alternative for individuals with uncomplicated acute alcohol intoxication could yield substantial cost savings for the U.S. health care system.

Abstract:
Background: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) have a high impact on morbidity and mortality of the population, becoming a public health issue. Studying and publishing about these is referred as pharmacovigilance. Objective: To describe and compare the adverse reactions produced by drugs of nervous system action (CNS-D) and neurological ADRs produced by drugs of systemic action (Sys-D). To further develop the need of reporting adverse reactions. Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, retrospective study performed on a database of neurological consultations which took place at the Neurology department. Patients meeting the inclusion criteria were selected and divided into two groups: Sys-D and CNS-D. Demographic and neurological variables were analyzed. Parametric and non-parametric statistics were used according to distribution. The Naranjo Algorithm (NA) was used to define causality. Results: 71 ADRs were described, from which 63.38% (n=45) were produced by CNS-D, especially antiepileptics by 47% (n=21) and psycholeptics by 44%. Of the total, 36.62% (n=26) were caused by Sys-D, such as antineoplastics (n=9) and antibiotics (n=9), being Cefepime the most frequent. The diagnosis of ADRs caused by a Sys-D was delayed prolonging hospitalization (p 0.05) due to a lower NA score (p 0.003) compared to the CNS-D group. Conclusion: Multiple frequently used drugs of systemic action, such as antineoplastics and antibiotics, generate neurological adverse effects. From our analysis, it was presumed that the suspicion of a neurological ADR caused by these drugs was scarce, thus causing a higher morbidity for the patient.
