Our thesis analyzes the poetry of two Martinican writers, Aimé Césaire (1913-2008) and Édouard Glissant (1928-2011), from the perspective of appropriating Caribbean space (place) and time (histories). These two compatriots are often considered to be in conceptual or even ideological opposition, to the detriment of a misunderstood poetic continuum that we plan to clarify. Our spatial and temporal optics of a poetic representation underlines on the other hand a process of evolution of the Caribbean poetry that these two poets successively embodied; inclusion of the memorial in the space, inclusion of the space in the history. They are conscious of writings which each assumes, in a "solitary and solidary" way, the poetic dwelling in the place, without turning away from this last. Between the birth of the voice of Negritude (1935) and the anti-epic of modern globalization that is Les Indes (1956), these two poets broke with the history of the detour from the land, and they conquered, for the first time in the literary history in the West Indies, a poetic autonomy assumed by an organic link of the writing with the place and its histories : From the lyrical verticality of rootedness in Césaire to the epic horizontality in Glissant, the path will be described in such a way that we illuminate by following the two writers’ poetic and political trails. To inhabit poetically the world consists for these two Caribbean poets at the same time to be rooted in a place and to be open to its others, without however ignoring the histories mixed in the very place

This work is based on a collection of unpublished and difficult data, those of a complex corpus of Mahabharata, the sacred texts of India, and corpus of the oral tradition of Barldon, sung in Creole society of La Réunion ever since the Indian migrants settled in the island. Several corpuses of different types were collected for effective synchronic and diachronic analysis. During our research work, we introduced three new areas in the same research field. We carried out research at Pondichery and brought back documents on Indian slavery and a Tamil manuscript sung in Reunion at the time of the ritual of “walk on fire”. We also worked on the history of language, cults, culture and migration. We established a critical apparatus which includes the analysis of the corpuses, indices, appendices whose conceptual tool consists of over hundred documents: 8 maps, 4 sketches, 36 graphs, 32 paintings, 5 texts of which one is Tamil critical edition, two unpublished translated Tamil and Creole texts, 25 images and a cinematic sequence. We reconstructed layers of language and our work shows that the Réunionnais remained a very special language and exposed to the process of linguistic and cultural creolisation, the language of Barldon, an ancestral language that our surveys have failed to find a place in South India. Can one speak of a sacred language in Réunion but kept exposed to the dynamics of creolisation? Our inquiry shows the queries made by Gillette Staudacher-Valliamee the difficulty of asking for Reunion the linguistic and cultural creolisation without pidginisation, by reminding that the question of language is central. Our work re-examines the place of India in formulating assumptions for the genesis of Creole in the Indian Ocean (A. Bollée 2009, R. Chaudenson 2010)

In this thesis title: "From Aimé Césaire's Negritude to Edouard Glissant's Tout-Monde, an analysis of a discursive reversal", the keywords – Negritude, discursive, reversal, Tout-monde, and creolization – set out two fundamental paradoxes and paradigms. These are the relationship between Caribbean society and Cartesian West ; and that between the disciples gathered around Confiant and Chamoiseau, the sons, against Césaire, the father. The central question is one of semio-anthropology and rhetoric; think of the Cesairian analysis of oxymorons and neologisms such as "départementalisation". We can observe the importance given to the argumentative process in the example of the discourse against colonialism, which centers around these binary confrontations, and is symbolized by the rhetoric of the White/white/Black/black or the semiotic of Greimas as reinterpreted by Bremond. Following on from M. Rinn, we will trace the journey of an actant-type from the role of patient as victim of the effects of the colonial issue to a reversal into the role of an agent who is an actor in his own destiny. This antithetic structure is replaced by the poetics of the Relationship – be it metaleptic or allegorical – for Glissant who, even at the collective level, replaces the nation-state, a bastion of globalization according to Césaire, by the relationship-nation, open to the diversity of interactions between its peripheral elements. The common choices made by Césaire, the poet, and Glissant, the philosopher, lead us to structure our thesis around Ricoeur's original notions of the early and latter stages of civilizations and the recreation of lost cultures. These also inspire the dialogic of the dramatic level of these works. With the cunning of the Trickster, we move to a reversal of the dialectic of evil by various effects of humor, where the beauty of the world is best expressed, where differences are agglutive rather than reductive

This study concerns the tense, mood and aspect [TMA] markers in two French Creoles: Mauritian and Haitian. The objectives of this doctoral thesis are twofold : 1] provide arguments to support the idea that Creole languages are non-exceptional and 2] highlight the contrastive differences of TMA marking between the verbal systems of the two creoles. First, we question the concept of "Creole Specific Reanalysis" [Detges 2000] by discussing the opposition between two important mechanisms in language change : grammaticalization and reanalysis, and we conduct a diachronical study on TMA markers in Mauritian Creole based on a corpus of old texts. Through its systematic exploitation, this work describes the emergence and the development of the TMA verbal system in this Creole. Secondly, a comparative analysis of the synchronic systems of TMA markers in Mauritian and Haitian is done, based on a general theoretical framework on Temporality and on contemporary data, resulting inter alia from a survey using Dahl’s [1985] questionnaire. The study presents the common elements and those that differentiate the TMA markers in the two Creoles because of their semantics and the communicative functions they fulfill

Throughout the 20th century, Costa Rica built its own national identity on the “purity and whiteness” of the Costa Rican race. This is the identity paradigm in which the Jamaican population found itself upon arriving on the Caribbean coast in 1870 in order to work on the construction of railways and the banana plantations. This black, non-Spanish-speaking community was a barrier to the Costa Rican national identity project. However, the year 2015, marked a turning point. In virtue of an amendment to the first article of the Constitution, Costa Rica redefined itself as a “multiethnic, multicultural Republic”. This thesis retraces the complex process of integration undergone by the Costa Rican Afro-Caribbean community from 1870 to 2015. This study claims that the existence of this recent reconfiguration of the Costa Rican identity paradigm was in part fostered by one of the country’s most peripheral areas: Limon. The works of linguists such as Robert Le Page and André Tabouret-Keller have proven that linguistic choices can be considered as “identity claims or acts” by means of which a given speaker demonstrates his identity, his background and his aspirations. The people from Limon, by means of their sociolinguistic and identity claims, have thus helped start the aforementioned process of reconfiguration. The well-established use of Creole English clashes with the government’s official policy regarding the use of the official language of Spanish and the indigenous languages. Even though Creole English is spoken in Limon, in 2010 UNESCO classified it in its Atlas of the World’s Endangered Languages. Is there thus a campaign of revitalization in Costa Rica concerning Creole English? In an attempt to analyze the changing identity paradigm from an intersemiotic perspective, this study has chosen to focus on Caribbean literature and art as they both represent powerful mediums through which the expression of the Caribbean identity is portrayed and claimed

To study Antoine Volodine’s post-exotic fiction through the prism of language is to consider language as an object of representation, as “material” shaped by the writer, and as a tool in a literary strategy which makes no concessions to the reader. Language is represented in numerous fictional sequences, reappearing as a theme from one text to the next, thereby revealing both the importance of certain novels in his oeuvre as well as the internal coherency of his work. Volodine relentlessly remodels the French language, introducing neologisms and disrupting expressions that seem, a priori, intangible. Furthermore, the analysis of this poetics based on heterogeneity and disruption - or its hybridity - allows certain linguistic practices specific to heteronyms to be identified. Above all, Volodine opens French to foreign languages through an innovative use of translation. This linguistic hospitality, which draws on “creolisation”, calls for a reconsideration of the francophone literary field (which it claims to be part of). Volodine’s language is used to denounce the misuse of language in historically identified discourses, and it is the means by which the writer sets up linguistic and literary devices which demand the active participation of the reader, who is regularly invited to partake in the construction of meaning
