Abstract:
This article introduces the Special Issue, ‘Transforming Cultures? From Creative Nation to Creative Australia’. Taking its historical reference point from the 1994 national cultural policy Creative Nation, it outlines the issue’s theoretical foundation in the field theory of Pierre Bourdieu, while also signalling field theory’s limitations in relation to transnationalism, ethnic heterogeneity and Indigeneity. This introduction addresses the specific conditions that require an approach that takes full account of the endogenous and exogenous factors influencing the constitution of culture in Australia from Creative Nation to its 2013 successor national cultural policy, Creative Australia, to the present day and beyond. Finally, the issue’s articles, which cover the broadcast media, sport, music, literature, heritage, and Indigenous art fields, are outlined, as are their contributions to advancing understanding of the key social and policy issues shaping the present conditions and future possibilities of Australian cultural fields in the process of transformation.

Abstract:
Every element of the community in the village should participate to optimize the potency that the village has. The village in Kuala Betara sub-district have marine resources, agriculture and plantation. Even with all of that benefit, if there is no support from creative human resources, it must be difficult for the village to create creative industry. Small and medium industry entrepreneurs have been utilizing the natural wealth of the village as the raw material of their production but they face obstacles in managing it due to their limited skills that are acquired self-taught and passed on from generation to generation, limited capital, unsophisticated production and packaging tools, limited market access due to limited production and the market is conventional only, including being not optimal in involving youth who are better in information technology. Meanwhile, the information about creative products can be easily obtained through internet. In addition, the youth also have not optimized the usage of internet as the media to collect creative ideas that will be useful in developing products of small and medium industry in the village. Besides, this industry can be a platform for youth to increase the quality through creativity. The method used in this research is survey with descriptive analysis. The result shows that the creativity of small and medium industry entrepreneurs and youth is in average level. Started from the main characteristics of creative people, possible characteristic of creative people, and side characteristic of creative people. . Even so, it is found that there are three entrepreneurs of small and medium industry and 42 youth who are belong to high level of creative people. These kind of people are the main and valuable assets to collaborate and becoming the foundation of creative industry in village.

Abstract:
In April 2016, the Presidium of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine approved a new version of the Concept for the introduction of media education in Ukraine. The purpose of the Concept is to create a system of media education, which should become the foundation of humanitarian security, development and consolidation of civil society, combating external information aggression, comprehensively prepare children and youth for safe and effective interaction with the modern media system, form media literacy and media to their age, individual and other features. The article, based on the analysis of domestic and foreign scientific sources, systematizes theoretical and practical developments of domestic and foreign scientists on the most effective ways, forms and methods of media education. It is established that there are three common ways of introducing media education in the educational process: integrated (through traditional subjects); optional (creation of a network of circles, sections, clubs); special (creation of special courses and special courses). One of the forms of integration of media education is the introduction of media courses. Popular are the creation of television or cinematic mini-scripts, class lectures, role-playing games on the material of various media. It was found that the organization of media centers, media clubs, film clubs and photo laboratories can be considered innovative forms of media literacy. The classifications of media education methods by L. Zaznobina, M. Matviychuk, L. Masterman, S. Penzin, O. Fedorov are considered. It is established that one of the most effective methods of media education researchers consider interactive: trainings, moderations, program training, case method (analysis of practical situations), business and role-playing games, discussions, creative problem solving method, project method. The choice of such methods is due to the possibility of their integration into individual disciplines. They provide an opportunity to intensify the process of understanding, learning and creative application of knowledge and help increase the motivation and involvement of participants in the process of joint problem solving, creative search.

Freud’s psychoanalytic approach has been one of the most controversial approaches to many fields of interest. Relating to education and educational psychology, this approach plays a significant role in modifying and enhancing one’s behavioral relationship among the educational elements like educators, parents, and students. Therefore, in many things, this approach has contributed a lot of inspiration in the development of education. In literary works, there seems to be a mutual fascination between psychoanalysis and literature whereas theory and approach, psychoanalysis explains literature and literature itself exploits psychoanalysis for creative purposes and works. Here, as a creative work, movie is considered literature because it can be interpreted and analyzed just like other written works of literature. As a learning instrument, movie evokes an affective domain that leads to changes in learning behavior and attitudes. Experiencing certain-themed movies can trigger particular reflective memories and reference toward events occurring on a daily basis and it can further strengthen the foundation for learning complex concepts like psychoanalysis.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the Bandung Center for New Media Arts (BCNMA), an autonomous cultural space set up in 2001 by three Indonesian artists and architects. The BCNMA aims to encourage a dialogue with circles outside the art world and to offer greater dynamic possibilities for experimental forms of expressions. The Indonesian sociopolitical context after 1998 has had a great influence on the nature, development and methodologies used by this center. The case study of the Third Asia-Europe Art Camp, coorganized in 2005 by the BCNMA and the Asia-Europe Foundation, also highlights how international projects are developed by the BCNMA while taking into consideration the local cultural networks and creative environment.

This summary discusses the main issues of the proceedings of the IV International Scientific Conference “Creativity as the National Environment: Media and Social Activity,” which was held from July 2 to July 4, 2018 in Saint Petersburg. The conference was organized by the Department of Philosophy of the Humanities Faculty of the Saint Petersburg State Economic University, the Russian Philosophical Society, the Society of Russian Philosophy at the Ukrainian Philosophical Foundation, and the Department of Philosophy of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). Being united by interest in the research on social activity in the media space and the national environment of creativity, 63 scholars from Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary took part in the conference. From 1989 to 1998, the artist Sadie Benning created nine video artworks using a Fisher-Price PXL-2000 camera, which records to audiocassette. The resulting video format is known as Pixelvision. This essay, written by video archivists, reviews the history of these works through the lens of audiovisual media preservation, and emerges from research and a series of interviews with the artist and other stakeholders. It aims to create a foundation for a collection assessment of Benning’s early video works, and explores the feasibility of preserving them. With this in mind, the essay traces the creative and technical processes involved in the production, exhibition, conservation, and distribution of such precarious media works, and discusses the innovative, ephemeral, and ultimately vulnerable media created by the PXL-2000 camcorder. This is a study of the fleeting nature of media technology, personal and social histories, and the meaning contained in audiovisual works of art.

Current problems in the Baidhaul Ahkam Islamic Vocational School, in its promotional strategy, still use less informative designs for new prospective students, making them less interested in seeing Baidhaul Ahkam Islamic Vocational Schools. The research method used is observation, interview and literature study. The article presents an analysis of the image resources of Vereshchagino -a small town in the Perm region, which should be used in the process of implementing the strategy of its geocultural branding. In popular scientific works and mass media, the city is called the “Western Gate of the Urals”, meaning that the Vereshchagino railway station is a key point, bypassing which, freight and passenger trains leave the Ural region. In 2023, Vereshchagino station will celebrate 125 years since the moment of its foundation. At the beginning of the XXI century, the dynamic development of the urban environment in Vereschagino was interrupted. The municipal authorities missed the opportunity to pursue a policy of territorial marketing branding, to actively promote the brand images of the town in the Ural geocultural space. Today, Vereshchagino has accumulated typical problems for a provincial town – demographic, communal, and socio-cultural ones. Urban communities express dissatisfaction with the visual and aesthetic appearance of the urban environment. According to the author’s point of view, the development and implementation of the Vereshchagino geocultural branding strategy is a progressive solution that allows creating creative industries in the city and ensuring sustainable socio-economic development. As a methodological basis, we used the conceptual ideas of the creative action of the British scientist Ch. Landry, as well as the postulates of the theory of geocultural branding of the city by the Russian researcher D. N. Zamyatin.

Adapun metode kegiatan ini dilaksanakan pelatihan tentang teknik pengajaran literasi dini untuk anak-anak PAUD. Teknik yang digunakan pada para guru adalah mendongeng dengan menggunakan media boneka jari dan buku besar. Pengabdian ini bertujuan membuat guru menjadi kreatif dan anak usia dini lebih aktif terlibat pembelajaran serta mengenal kearifan lokal Cianjur. ABSTRACTEarly literacy is seen as a very important foundation in human cognitive development, in teaching literacy in PAUD, it is necessary to pay attention to materials, media, and delivery methods so that early childhood is easy to understand and instill the values of life contained in learning, which is required to be able to innovate and be creative in delivering literacy learning materials, in the development and character of early childhood. The era of melinium is a global information transformation event that focuses on promoting online interaction. All the needs of our lives become facilitated and we feel spoiled because it is very fast to get information. A place that provides free internet and waifi services is very available. Communication vehicles such as Mobile (HP) are very easy and inexpensive to get by the public. The problem is, HP is not only used by adults but also school-age children. The internet provides a variety of positive and negative information. Whereas elementary school age children are not mature enough to make a selection of various information that has a negative impact. Mahasaraswati University (Unmas) Denpasar Regional Partnership Program (PKW) team looked at this problem by providing assistance to provide positive internet literacy in the hope of guiding students to good behavior as a basis for character education. The problem formulated is whether positive internet literacy can be a vehicle for character education for elementary school age students? The method of mentoring in the form of counseling, and training to students in the Semeru cluster in Melaya village and the Tambora cluster in the village of Candikusuma in Melaya sub-district includes 15 elementary schools. Students in primary school age are individuals who are potential, talented, creative and willing to try something very high. Through mentoring it can be seen that students are very enthusiastic, interested and able to learn and access positive information for development and support the learning process. Through positive internet literacy students can understand that the internet provides an opportunity to absorb a variety of positive information. This psychological atmosphere is a strong foundation for character building for elementary school students. The interesting thing is the support of schools, committees and supervisors by increasing internet interpretation, library application facilities and mentoring from educators and stakeholders.

The Currently, along with the advent of the web 2.0 era, due to the continuous expansion of social media service infrastructures, the shares of conventional public opinion evaluation functions have been gradually shifting from the existing mass media to social media. This phe-nomenon is attributable to the two-way communication and convenience unique to social media and social media are now in charge of an axis of public opinion evaluation standards. In particular, since diverse interests conflict in education policies and countless conflicts of opinions occur in the process of setting up policy agendas, in establishing education policies, accurately analyzing reputations among the public, who are the targets of education policies, in order to set up effective policy agendas, is the most important issue. Therefore, in this study, the resultant values of huge unstructured data on the positive and negative reputations of past policy agendas related to the mandatory software education that has been organized as a regular curriculum of middle/high schools from 2018 in Korea, which have been addressed by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, felt and judged by the general public on social media such as blogs and Twitter and on online media including portal news were visualized through opinion mining analysis techniques to derive more effective software education related policy agendas. In addition, based on the foregoing, a Korean style software education system that fits circumstances was constructed and the system is expected to become an important measure that provides guidelines for setting mid/long-term road maps for the fostering of creative and convergent talented persons equipped with international competitiveness and software education in Korea.

This paper discusses the first iteration of Game Changers Programme hosted by Coventry University's Disruptive Media Learning Lab (DMLL), an open game design initiative. The Programme had the goal of facilitating new models of teaching and learning, new practices in cross-faculty learning/collaboration to make game design and development more culturally open and accessible to staff, students and the broader informal communities surrounding the University. The paper will discuss the theoretical foundation of the GameChangers Programme, grounded in a conceptualisation of design as a holistic, modular and creative process, and in an ethos of sharing, collaborating and remixing. The paper will present the outline of the Course and the Community that constituted the core elements of the Programme, and discuss a plural showcase of a variety of outcomes from the GameChangers Community, focusing on the Programme's cultural impact and on how the Programme as a whole disrupted established notions of game based pedagogy, and the customary hierarchical relations between producers and users of learning games.

Abstract This text is a reflection in action of an artistic process based on a scientific research. ENSAIO is the choreographic project that resulted from the translation mechanisms of laboratory concepts to a bodily approach, where it proposes a possible mainstreaming of artistic and scientific processes combined. This project joined artistic higher education schools in dance and scenic arts (ESD and FCSH) and Polavieja lab, a neuroscience research lab in Champalimaud Foundation – Center for the Unknown. This text aims to reveal the creative choreographic and performative potentials hidden in this scientific research concerning neurosciences. Identifying cross materials to artistic and scientific processes, it was possible to design a structure of the creation process and the construction of a choreographic performance. The common platform has been found in the process of translation and the definition of the same concept substrate, which made possible the approach of the two instances: studio and laboratory. One of its key features is the promotion of the communication among its agents: scientists and dancers. And the possibility of modelling and absorption from what it comes from this sharing and collaboration. The methods and the choreographic procedures mirrored and promoted this sharing and, therefore, the involvement of the body. Where, the body is the agent able to reflect and trigger this process, a body as an essay that is constantly in research. A body able to coordinate between various media and to expand the reflection on itself. Although science and art are individual instances that inevitably specialise and segregated away. Therefore, this text focuses on examples of cross-thinking of both scientific and artistic cultures, and the articulation of the theoretical and practical bodies in a practice-as-research on the development of the ENSAIO creative process.

Learning in college is very urgent considering aspects of relevance and effectiveness. One strategy that becomes the trend of study is problem-based learning. Problem-based learning strategies are considered urgent and relevant to be applied in higher education, as an effort to trigger scientific exploration to foster critical and creative thinking skills. Problem based learning strategies should be based on research in order to have a systemic scientific structure, a strong, functional and implementative foundation in learning. The relevance and effectiveness of the implementation of problem-based learning strategies is designed with a management approach. Management breaks down the stages of problem-based learning strategies, including planning, implementation, and evaluation (assessment). Problem-based learning strategy planning includes the preparation of Semester Learning Plans (Rencana Pembelajaran Semester or RPS) that refer to the curriculum of study programs, establish learning outcomes, design teaching materials, analyze students, choose media, compile learning evaluation systems, and predict possible problems. All of them are designed with problem-based adapted from the results of the research. Implementation of problem-based learning begins with initial activities including attendance, apperception, orientation, and motivation, core activities include exploration, elaboration, and confirmation, and final activities including conclusions and assessments (evaluations). Evaluation of learning includes program assessment, implementation assessment, and assessment of goals achievement. Principles of learning assessment include educative, objective, accountability, and transparent. Measuring the achievement of problem-based learning is seen in indicators of critical and creative thinking abilities, including problem response, understanding problems, knowing cause of problems, able to find alternative solutions, recognize the impact of the problem, and be able to connect with other science disciplines. The strategy of problem-based learning in higher education has implications for students' interest and motivation in developing critical and creative thinking skills.

Purpose This paper aims to use quick response (QR) code along with online videos to teach one of the college foundation courses in an international institution to enhance the grasp of the students and to boost the students’ learning outcomes. Design/methodology/approach The study discussed and elaborated the findings that mainly focused on the usage of the online resources to teach Engineering Economy course. Besides, the authors analyzed how the gender may have different feedback for the student. Findings The study emphasized on the expectations of the students to use videos in the learning experience that preferred to be developed by course educator and to be published on the university platform, like blackboard or faculty website, that conforms university transformation vision undergoing nowadays. It is recommended to have a successful learning experience; it is the educator's responsibility to improve the personal digitization skills that would be used in the e-learning implementations, that will be used for the educational technology, which requires the use of creative media production mobile applications. Practical implications The education field has witnessed significant development over the past years in terms of using digital technologies as pedagogical tools to enhance the students’ learning experience especially the internet, where the traditional trends become outdated to be used in the classrooms. One of the main players in this field is videos that are considered as the main influencer to this educational change, where it has been demonstrated to and boost the quality of the learning experience. Originality/value In this study, students participated to explore the usefulness of using online learning through using videos blended with QR code to enhance the students’ performance in understanding one of the undergraduate foundation courses in the college of engineering, namely, engineering economy. A survey was distributed to students after the core material of the course was covered. The collected responses were then studied and analyzed.

The role of educationists is to help students develop quality thinking through self-reflection and discovering. Nature is on top of the index of discovery. This study contains measures for enhancing sensitivity towards nature, with the basic assumption that nature is the primary guide that generates diverse empirical and creative design processes in architecture education. Understanding the importance of nature and environment at beginner level is more effective, as working with nature will become intrinsic part of students’ design thinking. Foundation studio at the Department of Architecture at COMSATS University, Islamabad, serves as junction of art, architecture and nature, which works towards developing the critical thinking process. In order to bring students closer to the goal of inclusion of nature in the core design thinking “Impulsive” teaching methodology was adopted. Lateral thinking, one of the tools of impulsive system of teaching, was carried through in three stages: observation of nature, recording observations in variety of media and correlating observed natural phenomena to solve a given design problem. In this case the design problem was a piece of furniture, using a very thin sheet of steel that had a thickness of sixteen to twenty gauge. The study highlights a studio model by describing one of the experimental processes that was designed to augment originality in architectural design thinking. A specific natural phenomenon that is wind, was focused upon as a natural parameter of this study. The objective of the studio model was to offer students an organic tool for exploring new design possibilities. This helped students to visit and revisit the central idea for multiple interpretations, in order to relate it with architectural design process at any stage of design development. The purpose of this research is to describe the management of a character-based education curriculum in early childhood. The research uses a qualitative approach. The main source of this research data is the head of Raudhatul Athfal (RA), educator, and education officer, foundation administrator, and student guardian in RA Hidayatut Tauhid Losari Lor Village, Losari District Cirebon Regency West Java. Data collection is conducted with interviews, documentation, and observations. The results of the study decrypt that: RA Hidayatut Tauhid implemented the 2013 curriculum and the characteristic curriculum; the process of preparing the curriculum of RA Hidayatut Tauhid involves the head of Raudhatul Athfal, educators and education personnel, and the community; the content of the curriculum developed is to achieve a vision of instilling the personality of children who are intelligent, creative, independent and Islamic character that is organized according to the achievements contained in the formulation of vision. All aspects of the character development of students are considered through the implications of achieving the objectives of educational institutions, the management of educational institutions that facilitate learning with concepts, methods, and media following the content of the curriculum, and the integration of the design of learning activities.

The development of science and technology and the rapid flow of globalization have indirectly resulted in the degradation of values and the erosion of national identity, especially among youth. Youth become "easy targets" for HOAKS, intolerance, radicalism, SARA issues, negative gangs, crime, terrorism, and other negative views that increasingly erode Pancasila values as part of the national identity. These negative ideas are internalized either through association, social media, negative doctrine, tantalizing offers, mounts of interests of a group, changes in material and educational orientation, and so on. In this regard, karawitan as a cultural product full of local wisdom can be an alternative means of strengthening national identity. This study tries to represent local wisdom in musikals through the Garuda Pancasila song as a material for introducing and practicing gamelan in RW.04 Tukangan youth. The Garuda Pancasila song was chosen as the material for the song because it is one of the national songs; familiar; contains the aesthetic taste of Pancasila, the spirit of nationality, values, the foundation of the state and national identity. The objectives to be achieved from this research are 1) the creation of the Garuda Pancasila song arrangement using the laras slendro gamelan with the creative pop genre, and 2) the training process in the field is expected to encourage the development of a sense of joy playing the gamelan; activated creativity, innovation and expression; the emergence of togetherness, kinship, tolerance, tolerance, empathy, listening to one another, and others, which can strengthen the identity of the nation which is beginning to be eroded.

Nonprofit arts organization the ZBS Foundation began as a “media commune” in the early 1970s and continues to the present day: a period that spans dramatic changes in American radio culture and audio technology. The key creative figure at ZBS is the writer and producer Thomas Lopez, whose work serves as a case study in a “post-network” style of radio drama, one shaped by multitrack editing, field recording, and the ethos of the 1960s counterculture. The ZBS aesthetic comes into sharpest focus in the Jack Flanders adventure series, which demonstrates how ZBS adapted a “theater of the mind” approach to radio drama to create a “theater of the mind-body” that re-accentuated earlier conventions of the radio adventure serial for a countercultural audience. Lopez’s increasing use of field recordings to structure his narratives established a formal tension between the inner exploration of the hero’s psyche and an encounter with different cultures. I chart the development of this formal tension in ZBS’s theater of the mind-body and argue that Lopez’s work with ZBS is a bridge across multiple eras of radio, an archive of enduring characters and distinctive styles of storytelling, and a sonic laboratory for the fostering of cultural dialogue through sound.

My creative research looks at how Augmented Reality (AR) can help overcome Learning Disabilities. This focus has directed me to develop a number of ideas and concepts that seek to understand how the addition of information in an augmented view could help tackle some of the challenges different Learning Disabilities present while, at the same time, appealing to a larger audience. This concept was the foundation for creating the immersive mobile application tagAR™, which adds a digital name tag into your augmented view, replacing the traditional “Hello, my name is” sticker version. It allows you to see the names of people around you hovering above their heads at all times. Currently, the app is reliant on the user holding up a mobile device to use the camera so that the application can add the name tags to the view on your screen. As mainstream technology continues to advance, this app will work for wearable devices, eliminating the need to hold up your phone, which is a bit socially awkward. The target audience of the app is those who have trouble remembering people’s names, those who will benefit from having a visual of the names of people around them and for those who want to network and meet new people at social and educational events such as conferences or workshops. Through the design and development of this app, I have been exploring how the social aspect can be extended beyond just the name display and user search features to include a customizable tags that can be searchable, so users can connect, find people with similar interests, share contact information as well as connect with others on multiple social media platforms. I will discuss the research, design and developmental processes that influenced the concept and functionality of this social app using AR.

The challenge for early childhood educators to be able to provide a touch of education that is creative, innovative, smart, and fun to develop children's intelligence optimally. This study aims to develop Thematic Pop-Up Book products as learning media for the development of Early Childhood languages. The research subjects were 15 participants in class B6 of Khaira Ummah Islamic Kindergarten in the City. The research and development used data analysis using descriptive statistical analysis techniques. The results of the validity test and the practicality of the development of Pop-Up Book media at Khaira Ummah Islamic Kindergarten in Padang City were declared valid by media experts with an average score of 95%. Media Thematic Pop-Up Books, about Healthy and Unhealthy Foodstuffs were also declared valid by material experts with an average score of 95%. The results of the trial of thematic Pop-Up book products in Khaira Kindergarten Islamic Ummah were stated as a practical medium for children with a percentage increase in the test reaching 96%. Based on these results indicate that Pop-Up Book media products get a positive response from children and teachers. Media Pop-Up Book for further research can be used as a medium to improve children's cognitive, and interest in reading. In the context of the ongoing financial crisis in U.S. professional journalism, philanthropic foundation-supported nonprofits are increasingly proposed as a solution to the under-provision of civic-oriented news production. Drawing on an analysis of the social composition of boards of directors and interviews with foundation officials and nonprofit journalists, this article examines both the civic contributions and limitations of foundation-supported nonprofit news organizations. Foundations are shown to place many nonprofits in a Catch-22 because of competing demands to achieve both economic “sustainability” and civic “impact,” ultimately creating pressures to reproduce dominant commercial media news practices or orient news primarily for small, elite audiences. Further, media organizations dependent on foundation project-based funding risk being captured by foundation agendas and thus less able to investigate the issues they deem most important. Reforms encouraging more long-term, no-strings-attached funding by foundations, along with development of small donor and public funding, could help nonprofits overcome their current limitations.

Salah satu media yang dapat dipilih dalam proses kegiatan belajar mengajar adalah dengan menggunakan video dalam power point akan lebih menarik dan lebih representative untuk menyampaikan sebuah informasi jika disampaikan melalui media video (image motion) dibandingkan image. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. The management of the foundation and its teaching staff were required to master computer technology for data processing needs. Moreover, student data needed to be well documented. But the limited mastery of computers made data documented in paper form. So that the data accumulated, sometimes it was lost and difficult to search when needed. One of the media that could be selected in the process of teaching and learning activities was that using videos in power points will be more interesting and more representative to convey information if delivered through video media (image motion) compared to the image. The method used in this study was a qualitative descriptive research method. Data collection was done by observation and interview stages, as well as going directly to the destination.With the presence of computer training in the teachers or even the RA / TPQ / DTA Al-Ishlaah teaching staff, they will make it easier for them to teach and will make new innovations when their students get interesting lessons when presented with interesting and creative videos in the learning process. From educational gaming through portable e-readers to cell phones, media are interpenetrating educational spaces and activities. Accordingly, understanding media in environmental or ecological terms has become increasingly important for education internationally. In North America, for example, the centenary of McLuhan’s birth has focused attention on approaches to media – whether oral, textual, electronic or digital– as a kind of environment in which education takes place. In parts of Europe, the so-called mediatic turn – following on the linguistic and iconic turns – has similarly emphasized the role of media as a condition for the possibility of educational activities and programs. With a few exceptions1 the papers in this special issue were first presented at the conference «Educational Media Ecologies: International Perspectives» which took place at the University of Paderborn, Germany, on March 27–28, 2012.2 The event was an interdisciplinary and transatlantic endeavor to bring together a wide range of perspectives on various issues relevant to educational media ecologies,3 and on related debates on mediation, medialization, mediatization, and mediality.4 The purpose of this volume, like the conference, is to foster and deepen international dialogue in the area of educational media. Areas of research and scholarship relevant to this dialogue include educational media, media literacy, educational philosophy, and media and cultural studies. The contributions, described below, put conceptual issues as well as social practices and applications at the center of the debate. Klaus Rummler opens the issue by clarifying the concept of ecology itself. Referencing a range of work over the past 50 years, Rummler describes how ecological models have been cast in sociological, semiotic, cultural, mediatic and other terms, and he explains the implications of these various perspectives for the study of educational contexts. Rummler also briefly introduces the reader to the triangular model used by Bachmair, Pachler and Cook in this issue (and in other publications) to analyse the socio-cultural and cognitive possibilities opened up by various mobile media. Sandra Aßmann and Bardo Herzig discuss three theoretical approaches – a network perspective, systems theory and semiotics – in order to conceptualize and analyze learning with media in a range of formal and informal settings. They use the example of «friending» someone via Facebook, a context in which the formal and informal often intersect in unexpected ways. In this way, Aßmann and Herzig demonstrate the manifest complexities of communication analysis and pragmatics in these relatively new networked, mediated contexts. Judith Seipold provides an extensive overview of the burgeoning literature on the use and potential of mobile technologies in learning and educational ecologies. The research perspectives or frameworks covered by Seipold include critical, ethical, resource-centered, learning process-centered as well as ecological frames of reference. In her coverage of the last of these, not only does Seipold help to reframe the theme of this special issue as a whole, she also provides an excellent segue to the ecologically oriented analysis of «mobile learning» that follows. Ben Bachmair and Norbert Pachler’s contribution, «A Cultural Ecological Frame for Mobility and Learning», reflects the work of the London Mobile Learning Group, examining mobile resources and affordances from the ecological perspectives of Gibson, Postman and the seminal German media-pedagogue, Dieter Baacke. Using the structuration theory of Anthony Giddens, Bachmair, Norbert and Cook elaborate the aforementioned triangular model for understanding both the agency and the cultural and structural constraints offered by mobile technologies. In «Building as Interface: Sustainable Educational Ecologies», Suzanne de Castell, Milena Droumeva and Jen Jenson connect learning and media ecologies with the material, global and ecological challenges that have become a part of the anthropocene. They do so by examining the mediation of a physical, architectural environment, their own departmental environment at Simon Fraser University. De Castell, Droumeva and Jenson uncover a range of practical and theoretical challenges, and explore the implications for both body and mind. Markus Deimann takes the reader back into the history of continental educational theory, to Humboldt’s (and others‘) expansive understanding of Bildung, to suggest a conceptual ecology germane to the manifold possibilities that are now on offer through open education. Deimann sees the «open paradigm» as changing education utterly – and for the better. It will do so, Deimann predicts, by «unbundling» resource and service provision, and assessment and accreditation functions that have for too long been monopolized by the educational monoliths known as «universities». Theo Hug’s contribution, «Media Form School – A Plea for Expanded Action Orientations and Reflective Perspectives» similarly looks to the past to envision possibilities for the future. Hug’s concern is with the narrow confines in which media are conceptualized and operationalized in many K-12 educational ecologies, and in the corresponding policy and curricular documents that further constrain and direct this action. Hug suggests looking to the recent past, the 1970s and 1960s, in which alternatives were envisioned not only by figures like McLuhan and Illich, but also intimated in the works of Austrian poets and artists. Norm Friesen provides the third «rearview mirror» perspective in his examination of the lecture as a trans-medial pedagogical form. From the late medieval university through to today’s IGNITE and TED talks, the lecture has accommodated and reflected a wide range of media ecologies, technical conditions and epistemological patterns. New media technologies –from the (data) projector to lecture capture media– have not rendered the lecture obsolete, but have instead foregrounded its performative aspects and its ongoing adaptability. Michael Kerres and Richard Heinen take as their starting point Deimann’s, Hug’s and Friesen’s stress on the manifold possibilities presented digital and open educational resources. They then seek to answer the question: How can this embarrassment of riches be put to good use in K-12 educational contexts? Their answer: «Edutags», a way of making resources more accessible and usable by providing descriptive and evaluative information along with such resources. Heinz Moser and Thomas Hermann present the concept and first results of the project «Visualized Vocational Aspirations: Potentials of photography for career counselling and vocational preparation».5 The research project is a cooperation between the Zurich University of Teacher Education (Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich) and the «Laufbahnzentrum» (Centre of Vocational Counselling) Zürich. Based on an ecological approach of narrative career education and a design-based research methodology the undertaking aims at creative applications of visual storytelling in career counselling. Rainer Leschke and Norm Friesen conclude the issue with what might be called an aesthetic- or formal-ecological perspective. The digital convergence of textual and other media forms, Leschke and Friesen maintain, means the erasure of formal and material distinctions traditionally embedded in separate media. Purpose – As the use of social networking and social media technologies (SNT) has become pandemic amongst young people (Tess, 2013; Falahah and Rosmala, 2012) there has been an increasing drive amongst educators and researchers to explore the ways in which SNT may be utilised within the classroom (Junco, 2012). Whilst there is therefore an increasing amount of literature available in relation to the use of SNT within the classroom it does not appear that there has been sufficient research considering the manner in which SNT results in the development of a complex, invisible and organic social network amongst students. When these networks exist outside of the classroom they may allow informal learning and peer support to occur. The purpose of this paper is to investigate these issues. Additionally this paper seeks to determine if the use of Facebook by students may provide an indication of the likelihood of student success on their course. Design/methodology/approach – This paper utilises an empirical approach to explore the nature of these invisible networks and the degree to which the use of SNT by students outside of the classroom may provide support for student learning in relation to informal learning and social interaction. This study explores the use of Facebook through the use of a case study of one cohort of 90 creative arts students who undertook a one-year Foundation in Art and Design course within a specialist arts college in the UK. This research utilises the technique of social network analysis (SNA) in order to visualise the type of interactions that occur within the online network and the strength of these interactions (Dawson, 2008). Findings – Results demonstrate that within this case study the creative arts student group created a complex and interrelated network of connections through Facebook with some students clearly placed at the centre of the network and others on the periphery. It is also demonstrated that those students who are more central within the network are more likely to remain on the course and achieve their qualification. Originality/value – This paper demonstrates that SNA provides a useful and insightful way in which to visualise what would otherwise be an invisible network of connections made by students outside of the classroom. Furthermore this paper will provide an insight for teachers and researchers into the benefits of the use of SNT within education, which will have practical implications for the future use of SNT in teaching and learning.

The digital turn in anthropology and ethnography is not a sudden rupture to the field’s epistemological quest. In recent years, after the visual turn and the evolution of Digital Humanities, there have been notable efforts to address the digital aspect of social reality by several anthropologists worldwide. However, the focus has been predominantly on the observation of internet cultures and communities, mainly tackling phenomena that ‘take place’ in the digital realm, and on the techniques and issues that arise from conducting online research with limited contributions to the theoretical ramifications of recent advancements on the technological front. We argue that the methodological repercussions of the discussion around digital ethnographic writing modalities has not yet been adequately addressed, which reflects a wider tendency of the anthropological lens to remain on the “observant” side of things and not partake in the active discussion and practices regarding knowledge production and representation. Drawing on the research project “Ethnography and/as hypertext fiction: representing surrogate motherhood” (HYFRESMO), currently implemented at the Anthropology Department of Panteion University and funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation & the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, the paper seeks to provide an example of the creative accommodation of digital media in the field of anthropology. In order to do so, it focuses on the intersections between the object of study (new reproductive technologies) and the writing tropes made available by new digital technologies. After conducting ‘traditional’ physical fieldwork on surrogate motherhood, and combining offline and online observation and communication with research interlocutors, our methodological proposition does not aspire to radicalize the work already implemented by fellow anthropologists in the direction of data gathering or performing participant observation in the digital/cyber-sphere; rather, in our endeavor to create a transmedia, non-text-oriented, fictional ethnographic account (during but mainly after) the fieldwork experience, we propose that digital ethnographic representation becomes a very privileged under-researched terrain upon which to experiment on the transformative potential of the digital turn in the humanities and creatively tie together the research topics and their representational potentials.

The paper presents a theoretical overview of the notion “multimodal literacy” in the context of the multiliteracies pedagogy focusing on the research relevant to developing notions of literacy for twenty-first century higher education standards. The relevance of the topic is explained by the fact that the modern world is becoming more and more pluralist and increasingly dependent on new technologies and different modes of communication, students require new transdisciplinary skills and methods of learning. The author examines the changing pattern of literacy as broad, multidimensional knowledge, skills and attitudes. Literacy is viewed as a personal sociocultural capacity the development of which provides every student with the rules how to solve problems, to relate to others and survive in diverse social settings, and creates numerous opportunities for enhancing critical thinking and reflection as well. The foundation for students’ multimodal literacy in the digital learning environment of a higher education institution through theoretical and applied frameworks of visual, media, information and multicultural literacy is considered. The diverse affordance of digital tools and range of multimodal genres offer engaging new avenues for students’ creative expression on the basis of developing multimodal literacy. It is emphasized that successful life in a world of multimodal information requires fluency in a broad range of literacies to consume and create texts in visual, audio, and written formats, to evaluate messages in a variety of mediums, and to gain sociocultural awareness and the ability to communicate and live in a global diverse society. Pedagogic techniques across disciplines (multimodal essay, digital mapping project) are highlighted in view of their effectiveness in developing multicultural literacy of undergraduate students. It is an empowering practice for modern educators to incorporate multimodal tasks into a diverse learning environment, which teaches critical thinking and multimodal skills, enhances audio-visual rhetoric, develops writing and oral communication skills, and aids in self-expression and self-reflection.

Abstract Objective – Cultural heritage institutions with digital images on Wikimedia Commons want to know if and how those images are being reused. This study attempts to gauge the impact of digital cultural heritage images from Wikimedia Commons by using Reverse Image Lookup (RIL) to determine the quantity and content of different types of reuse, barriers to using RIL to assess reuse, and whether reused digital cultural heritage images from Wikimedia Commons include licensing information. Methods – 171 digital cultural heritage Wikimedia Commons images from 51 cultural heritage institutions were searched using the Google images “Search by image” tool to find instances of reuse. Content analysis of the digital cultural heritage images and the context in which they were reused was conducted to apply broad content categories. Reuse within Wikimedia Foundation projects was also recorded. Results – A total of 1,533 reuse instances found via Google images and Wikimedia Commons’ file usage reports were analyzed. Over half of reuse occurred within Wikimedia projects or wiki aggregator and mirror sites. Notable People, people, historic events, and buildings and locations were the most widely reused topics of digital cultural heritage both within Wikimedia projects and beyond, while social, media gallery, news, and education websites were the most likely places to find reuse outside of wiki projects. However, the content of reused images varied slightly depending on the website type on which they were found. Very few instances of reuse included licensing information, and those that did often were incorrect. Reuse of cultural heritage images from Wikimedia Commons was either done without added context or content, as in the case of media galleries, or was done in ways that did not distort or mischaracterize the images being reused. Conclusion – Cultural heritage institutions can use this research to focus digitization and digital content marketing efforts in order to optimize reuse by the types of websites and users that best meet their institution’s mission. Institutions that fear reuse without attribution have reason for concern as the practice of reusing both Creative Commons and public domain media without rights statements is widespread. More research needs to be conducted to determine if notability of institution or collection affects likelihood of reuse, as preliminary results show a weak correlation between number of images searched and number of images reused per institution. RIL technology is a reliable method of finding image reuse but is a labour-intensive process that may best be conducted for selected images and specific assessment campaigns. Finally, the reused content and context categories developed here may contribute to a standardized set of codes for assessing digital cultural heritage reuse.

The p53 gene is a tumour suppressor gene with many roles in cellular reprogramming, senescence, or cancers. Knockdown of p53 in somatic cells improves generation of induced pluripotent stem cells and developmental competence of cloned embryos. In this study, we hypothesised that disruption of p53 in bovine somatic cells using CRISPR-Cas9 may improve reprogramming and result in increased blastocyst formation. For the study, ovary-derived immature bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes were matured in vitro. To prepare the donor cells with disruption of p53, primary cells from the skin tissue were transfected with spCas9 and single guide RNA for bovine p53. Two days later, genomic DNA was extracted and the mutation was evaluated on the target region using the T7E1 enzyme. Several single cell colonies were isolated to investigate the mutation and sequencing for mutation positive colonies was performed. One colony with high proliferative activity and heterozygotic mutation (−7bp deletion) was selected and used as the donor cell for somatic cell nuclear transfer. The donor cell was microinjected into an enucleated oocyte. Reconstructed oocytes were fused by electrical pulse, activated by chemical stimulation, and cultured in chemically defined media for 7 days at 5% CO2 and 5% O2. Data were subjected to ANOVA and least significant different test to determine differences between experimental groups by using SAS software (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). Statistical significance was determined when the P-value was less than 0.05. Blastocyst formation rate (13.5±7.6%) from the mutated cell line was significantly lower than wild type cells (43.9±12.1%). Moreover, total cell number (115.4±13.3) of the blastocysts from knockout cells was significantly decreased compared with the control group (143.6±22.5). Some randomly selected blastocysts derived from mutated cells were subjected to mutation assay to confirm deletion of p53. As expected, all the samples were positive to mutation. These data did not support our hypothesis that p53 disruption could improve blastocyst formation competence of bovine cloned embryos. In the future, the reason for impaired embryonic development of clones of p53 deleted somatic cells will be further investigated. Branding activities carried out to provide an image to the public about a brand. As one of the tertiary institutions in Sumatra that specializes in arts education, the Indonesian Institute of Art (ISI) Padangpanjang does not have a brand identity that is able to reach the public effectively. This has caused a lack of relationship between the ISI Padangpanjang and the public. To build a strong institutional identity that easily touches the public emotionally, gives a feeling of being closer so as to foster public trust in the institution, a mascot of ISI Padangpanjang has been designed. In the process, branding theory, as well as analysis of the vision of ISI Padangpanjang became the foundation in creating a mascot design. The results obtained are the creation of a mascot representing the ISI Padangpanjang named Si Kuaw. The Si Kuaw mascot design method is carried out through the design stages: research, thumbnails, roughs, comprehensive, and ready to press. As a media branding, the Si Kuaw mascot has been applied to various media, such as: motion graphics, art exhibition posters, new student acceptance brochures, pins, and mascots in the form of dolls.

This article reports on a study that engaged graduate students from one Canadian university in a knowledge creation project, which produced new evidence and insights regarding pressing socio-political issues of our time. This study resulted in the creation of an instructional application known as the IIF (the Interpretive Imagination Forum), a collaborative video research application for use in higher education courses across the disciplines (e.g., anthropology, history, media studies, philosophy, queer studies, sociology, women's studies). Further, this study resulted in the development of a technology-mediated, hermeneutic tagging technique. IIF was developed as an open-source platform for conducting video research. In keeping with open-source curriculum objectives (OSC), a curriculum framework was developed, which can be used in graduate-level courses (e.g., curriculum foundations, qualitative methodology, critical inquiry). Student participants were invited to add, delete, and modify text annotations or tags, which not only resulted in broader understandings of the themes, theories, and concepts that existed within the videotaped content, but also resulted in the development of a creative and innovative instructional and learning tool. The overarching objective of this study was to circumvent linear or normative qualitative analysis and instead facilitate non-linear, creative, and organic approaches to understanding, analyzing, representing, and disseminating theories and concepts derived from video scholarship.

Design/methodology/approach Following the process model presented by Fink (2005), a systematic literature review of academic journal articles published between 2005 and 2014 was conducted. The research was grounded on the theoretical foundations of service-dominant logic. Findings This study offers detailed descriptions and analyses of the major social media mechanisms affecting how value is created in social media-based value networks and the kinds of impact social media can have on present and future business models. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to academic research literature on business organizations, excluding all studies related to public and non-profit organizations. Practical implications Attention is given to developing an in-depth understanding of the functions and concrete value creation mechanisms of social media-based co-creation within the different organizational processes (e.g. in product and service development and customer services) and to updating the related practices and knowledge. Originality/value This study provides new insight into the challenges related to research models and frameworks commonly used for observing value creation, thus highlighting the need for further studies and updates.

Research in computer music at the University of Padua, Italy, began in the early 1970s and was formalized in 1979 by establishing the Centro di Sonologia Computazionale (CSC). Since its foundation, CSC has established itself as a leading research center in the field of computer music. This article describes the scientific and musical research activities of the center and of the composers and members who worked in association with it in its first four decades. The center's historical background with its musical and scientific precursors is also chronicled, as are important events at CSC. An outline of its scientific research activity is then traced, with aspects of the technical details in its different areas of activities, showing the distinctive research ethos and the changing priorities of the center. Research from the 1970s is also included, as it led to the foundation of the CSC. Moreover, selected musical works, representative of CSC works from historical and scientific points of view, are described. Finally, perspectives for future developments are discussed.

The Highlands and Islands Film Guild is briefly surveyed in this article that introduces the Special Issue on Media and Modernity. The foundations, principles and manner of operation are outlined, as well as the interdisciplinary research project. The article starts with a review of literature on the nature of society in the Highlands and Islands, and the way that researchers regard it as ‘the other’ in historical and ethnographic research within the United Kingdom. Abstract:
Despite the increasing number and significance of charitable foundations in various business sectors, their role in cocreating corporate social responsibility (CSR) value remains unclear. This paper identifies CSR value cocreation in professional team sport organizations (PTSOs) and answers three key research questions: (a) Why have PTSOs developed charitable foundations as their means toward CSR value cocreation? (b) What CSR-related resources do PTSOs and their charitable foundations integrate? and (c) How do they manage, share, and transfer such resources to cocreate CSR value? Drawing theoretical insights from service dominant logic and consumer culture theory—and using empirical data from 47 semistructured interviews of UK-based professional football (soccer) clubs—this study develops a communicating vessels framework to illustrate the role of charitable foundations in the CSR value cocreation process. Through four tentative CSR value cocreation levels of relationship (bolt-on, cooperative, controlled, and strategic) the study suggests several internal strategies that can enhance the level of collaboration between founders and foundations. These include information sharing through customer relationship management (CRM) systems and social media platforms; staff sharing or flexible movement across the organizations; quality assurance agreements; flexible team cooperation; partnership protocols with social, media, cultural, and commercial stakeholders; and cotraining of personnel.

Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVE) are increasingly being used in education and provide environments where users can manipulate minute details of their avatar's appearance including those traditionally associated with gender and race identification. The ability to choose racial and gender characteristics differs from real-world educational environments and raises interesting questions regarding the applicability of previous racial and gender research findings. Specifically, do racial and gender categorizations found in traditional classroom research convey to virtual worlds where gender and race are controllable? To explore this issue research related to racial and gender characteristics in traditional and MUVEs environments is considered. Additionally, the theories of classification and mental categorization, media equation theory, equalization hypothesis, and Social Identification Model of Deindividuation Effects are examined as potential foundations of understanding. Results of two pilot studies conducted to determine associations of avatar appearance with gender and racial classifications are discussed in relation to the development of a theoretical framework. Implications for future investigations are discussed.

Abstract:
A multitude of discourses inside and outside of sport suggest the value of winning. The result of these discourses has contributed to the belief that winning is evidence of effective coaching and that winning is the aim of sport. This paper begins by describing several of the winning discourses constructed by the media, academic community, sport stakeholders, and coaches. Furthermore, I argue that the winning discourse has tacitly contributed to coaches identifying the outcome of a sport contest (e.g., win or loss) as an appropriate measure of good, effective coaching. After identifying the perils of this view and associated illogical thinking, I suggest the creation of new discourses related to the educational foundations of effective coaching.

Despite the growing literature dealing with social media marketing (SMM) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), one area that has not been fully explored is the creation of the content itself. SMEs typically do not have the same resources available that larger companies possess. Therefore, they have to find alternative ways to compensate for this weakness. This study analyzes SMEs’ SMM content creation, specifically on Facebook. By first scanning existing literature for essential factors for content creation, a theoretical foundation for the empirical part is presented. A qualitative approach was applied through the use of semi-structured interviews with eight SMEs. The findings suggest that it is difficult for most SMEs to efficiently use available resources, but also that minimal resources are required to create engaging content. Moreover, SMEs are typically aware of the majority of elements that influence content creation, at least to a certain extent, and that they should have established processes and routines to overcome the burden of limited resources. The study concludes with directions for future research and practical recommendations.

Abstract:
Many studies have shown a link between being competent in early mathematics and achievement in school. Early math skills have the potential to be the best predictors of later performance in reading and mathematics. Movement and songs are activities that children like, making it easier for teachers to apply mathematical concepts through this method. This study aims to develop audio-visual learning media in the form of songs with a mixture of western and traditional musical idioms, accompanied by movements that represent some of the teaching of early mathematics concepts. The stages of developing the ADDIE model are the basis for launching new learning media products related to math and art, and also planting the nation's cultural arts from an early age. These instructional media products were analyzed by experts and tested for their effectiveness through experiments on five children aged 3-4 years. The qualitative data were analyzed using transcripts of field notes and observations and interpreted in a descriptive narrative. The quantitative data were analyzed using gain score statistics. The results showed that there was a significant increase in value for early mathematical understanding of the concepts of geometry, numbers and measurement through this learning medium. The results of the effectiveness test become the final basis of reference for revision and complement the shortcomings of this learning medium. Further research can be carried out to develop other mathematical concepts through motion and song learning media, and to create experiments with a wider sample. So the theoretical foundations relevant to this research are phenomenology, social media concept and concept of interpersonal communication. Data analysis used in this research is communication phenomenology analysis that is by analyzing every phenomenon of interpersonal communication done by adolescent through social media. By using interview technique, observation and documentation technique in collecting data, it is found that Wonorejo teenagers have verbal and nonverbal communication content by utilizing social media through Facebook account, Whatsapp even group communication room through online game creating cyberculture among teenagers.

Social media is one of the results of the development new media. It grows with a wide variety of information and technology applications and has a great demand by all levels of society. The use of social media can provide a dual effect on the social fabric of society, especially the youth, because youth are the active users of social media. Students as a young generation need to be prepared with digital media literacy skills to be able to use digital media intelligently and effectively. This study aims to determine the ability of the digital media literacy of students STIKOM LSPR Jakarta, in particularly of the usegae of social media. The research used the instrument of Social Competence Framework based on European Commission (2009) to determine the level of digital media literacy of students. The results showed that the media literacy of students STIKOM LSPR including medium level based on their social competence. Moreover, the result can be used as a foundation in creating digital media literacy education programs.

Abstract:
Social networks and media hosting sites have recently fostered a growing trend in meme culture: the circulation of images within strangely specific categories of pleasure such as the “oddly satisfying” and the “mildly interesting.” Difficult to define but collectively recognized, what I call aesthetic category memes are made up of images of ordinary things and processes that not only exemplify such categories of pleasure, but also provoke reflection on the peculiar nature of those categories. As a result, I argue, contributors to aesthetic category memes are unwittingly engaged in a philosophical project that tests the principles of aesthetic theory. Examining the growing archive of images and comments alongside key texts in aesthetic theory, I explore how aesthetic category memes reclaim the aesthetic faculties away from the presumed passivity of sharing, consuming, and “liking” online content, thereby revealing the philosophical foundations of what it means to share and “like” at all.
