Full text
Abstract:
This article focuses on the role of embroidery in H.D.’s life and work in the 1940s. Bringing the tropes of tapestry, writing, and spiritualism together gave H.D. a means to explore possibilities for both personal and social healing following the trauma of the war years and to express her hopes for a world without war. Moreover, H.D. used tapestry as a metaphor that allowed her to explore her affiliation to nineteenth-century poets, particularly William Morris, while also enabling the development of her modernist style to a more extreme dynamic of rupture and connection. The article situates H.D.’s embroidery in the context of wider discourses on women's amateur textile craft and Morris's work in textiles and literature, before considering H.D.’s use of tapestry as a creative practice and metaphor in her late novel The Sword Went Out to Sea.

Abstract:
Blogging is an integral part of modern Internet communication. It allows us to push the boundaries of time and space, making it possible for people around the world to interact online: find like-minded individuals, learn, communicate, get up-to-date information, etc. The most popular video format of such interaction today is video blogging. Video bloggers (vloggers) often find themselves in the position of a leader: their lifestyle and speech characteristics become a model for the channel’s subscribers; people listen to vloggers and try to copy them. Since each social role corresponds to a certain type of speech behaviour and a set of language tools, it can be assumed that the speech of vloggers also has some specific features. This paper is an integral part of a multidimensional study of the speech of modern vloggers from the embroidery community on YouTube and considers the active processes of word formation in their speech. The material included Russian-language YouTube videos dedicated to embroidery posted from 2016 to 2020. The research showed that the appearance of derived words in the colloquial speech of embroiderers is not accidental. Words are derived quite often and borrowed by vloggers from each other. They perform various functions, the main being nominative and emotionalevaluative. The creative component of embroiderers’ activity is reflected in their speech: the process of forming new words is characterized by imagery, metaphoricalness, and abundance of diminutives with positive connotations.

Abstract:
Ecaterina Ajder, representative of the early `80s of plastic artists from the Republic of Moldova, constantly opts for endowing the work of art with innovative stylistic values. Plastic tradition and modernity originally connect in her creation, contributing to the generation of current messages through image. Preferring to materialize her thematic and plastic predilections in the genre of artistic tapestry and easel painting, Ecaterina Ajder has drawn and consolidated over the decades her unmistakable stylistic facet, in which the insurmountable landmarks of folk art have found a favorable artistic fulfillment and integration into relevant contemporary creative trends. In the artistic tapestry, the painter significantly capitalized both the aesthetic expressions obtained from the classic weaving, and from combining it with various techniques such as felt and embroidery. When referring to the easel painting she highlighted the traditional aspects of structural-constructive constitution of the image field and, at the same time, the impressive artistic expressions, obtained after practicing mixed techniques, giving priority to the collage methodology. In the artist’s creation, both the conceptualization and aesthetic interpretation of the theme, as well as the way of operating with plastic means imminently contribute to the demarcation and supplementing of the semantic area of the work with high value expressions.

Abstract:
Abstract The embroidery process is one of the means of joining textile materials into a system, which is widely applied in the creation of products of special destinations. The development of the functionality of embroidery systems is indissoluble from high-quality requirements for the accuracy of the form of the element. In the embroidery process, the system of textile materials experiences various dynamic loads, multiple stretching, and crushing; therefore, the geometrical parameters of the embroidery element change. The objective of this paper was to analyze the widths of the different square-form closed-circuit embroidery elements and also to perform their analysis with the purpose to evaluate the embroidery accuracy of the embroidered elements. Test samples were prepared in the form of square-form closed-circuit embroidery elements of five different contour widths: 6 mm, 10 mm, 14 mm, 18 mm, and 22 mm. During the investigation, it has been determined that in most cases the contour widths of the five closed-circuit square-form embroidery elements were obtained, smaller than the size of the digitally designed element.

Abstract:
Digital tools for User Generated Content (UGC) aim to enable people to interact with media in conversational and creative ways that are independent of technology producers or media organisations. In this article we describe two case studies in South Africa that show that UGC is not simply something tied to technology or the internet but emerges in non-digital storytelling. At the District Six Museum in Cape Town, District Six ex-residents are central collaborators in the narratives presented. Ex-residents tell stories in the museum and can write onto inscriptive exhibits, such as a floor map showing where they used to live, and visitors can write messages on ‘memory clothes’, which are later preserved through hand embroidery. Such explicit infrastructures to access and protect cultural records are less available to rural inhabitants of the former Transkei. To address this gap local traditional leaders and villagers collaborated with a National Archives Outreach Programme by co-generating a workshop that linked various local priorities, such as representation to government, land rights and ecotourism to natural and cultural heritage. Both studies start to reveal opportunities to design technologies that increase participation in recording and sharing personal and cultural stories. They also show the need to respect values embedded in place-based oral customs, such as the importance of enabling transparency and supporting alternative views on historical events.

Abstract:
Since its inception in 2018, the aim of the “Creative Encounters” section of Migration and Society has been to off er alternative ways of engaging with “voice” or, more pertinently, as I have argued elsewhere, “to embroider the voice with its own needle” (Qasmiyeh 2019). This dialectic is proposed to problematize the notion of the voice as it is often perceived and mobilized: a medium offered to those in need of (their) voices rather than as a prior state of being that is initiated by and therefore intrinsically belongs to the individual herself. In this vein, “to embroider the voice with its own needle” is to see the voice within its owner, as a given and not to be given, through tracing the thread as it touches the needle eye to go through it and in so doing ushering in the embroidering that will come. Indeed, embroidering the voice is writing the intimate, the lived, and the leftovers in life into newer times as imagined by the writer herself; it is writing without a helping hand from anyone but rather through continuously returning to the embroidered (and what is being embroidered) and its tools, notwithstanding how incomplete and fragmentary they are.

The publication actualizes the experience of organizing out-of-school education in Ukraine in the Soviet period (1952–1991) and indicates the ways of its use in modern conditions. The author singles out progressive ideas of the experience in the organization of out-of-school education in Ukraine in the period under study, which deserve consideration in the context of their implementation in out-of-school education in modern conditions: development of regulatory framework (it is stressed that now we observe inconsistency between regulatory and legislative framework concerning budgetary financing of out-of-school educational institutions and payment of teachers, scientific staff, specialists of other qualifications working there); creation of an extensive infrastructure of out-of-school educational institutions (it is proposed to pay attention to the resumption of carpentry, turning, wickerwork for boys; cooking, embroidery, knitting, tailoring for girls when forming a network of out-of-school educational institutions); state financial support; establishing relations of out-of-school educational institutions with state, private and public organizations (it is noted that now every leader and teaching staff faces the problem of determining the mechanism of establishing partnership interaction of out-of-school educational institutions with public authorities, local governments, public organization ); forming leisure culture in students (it is emphasized that further development requires a network of various out-of-school institutions that create the necessary conditions for comprehensive harmonious development of teenagers, develop new forms and methods of out-of-school activities in the field of leisure, as well as ways of involving teenagers in various leisure activities both at school and in out-of-school clubs and creative centers); regulation and improvement of the system of professional training, retraining and advanced training of specialists in the system of out-of-school education; physical infrastructure support of out-of-school educational institutions (it is noted that physical infrastructure support should include all the necessary equipment, facilities and inventory for various forms of organization of out-of-school education (group, club, section, etc.).

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this case study is to describe the social project "Wielkie nić / The Big Thread" - the creation of embroidered messages - which has many features in common with children’s play. Just like play, it needs space, time and rules, but at the same time, also a lot of freedom. And neither need spectators. Moreover, the project - like a form of symbolic play, where children use abstract things to represent reality - has a metaphorical significance. The threads, used for common embroidery, truly connect people. They realize how much they have in common and how they need each other. This can give a sense of unity and community and even change their consciousness.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the implementation of patriotic education in the content of elementary school lesson work. It has been established that the upbringing of patriotism is one of the priority aspects of the national upbringing system and involves the formation of patriotic feelings, love for its people, a deep understanding of civic duty, and a willingness to defend the national interests of the Motherland. Examples of tasks and exercises in elementary education disciplines designed to educate children by patriots are considered. As, in the Concept of national patriotic education of children and youth it is stated that important patriotic qualities in children of primary school age appear through the prism of educational subjects of elementary school, in particular mother tongue, literary reading (through texts), mathematics (through the condition of mathematical problem) natural sciences (familiarization with traditions, respectful attitude to nature), work training (familiarization with traditional folk crafts, production of vignettes of different regions of Ukraine, decoration with different embroidery techniques ), musical art (comprehending the intonational peculiarities of music of the Ukrainian people), visual arts (forming a culture of feelings). An important place is given to the educational subject "I in the world", aimed at socializing the personality of the younger student, his patriotic and civic education. A program of Ukrainian patriotic upbringing of children and student youth, which outlines the content and basic tendencies of patriotic upbringing of the person, demonstrates that “at an early school age, it is important to shape a child's ability to recognize himself or herself as a member of a family, family, and child group; as a student, city or village resident; nurture her love for her home, school, street, her country, her nature, her native word, life, traditions [1,33]. Modern scholars distinguish the following structural components of a sense of patriotism: spiritual and moral experience and love for their native land; humanistic universal and national values; moral and aesthetic ideals of personality; creative and transformative activity for the benefit of the Motherland.

Abstract:
National arts and crafts are not only the skills of an individual nation but an ethnic phenomenon that has unique features and serves as a source of information on national history and culture. Decorative and applied art in Ukraine combines the traditions and techniques of manufacturing and decoration, which have been developed and passed down from generation to generation. It has a clear national identity and numerous regional differ¬ences in ornamental motifs, compositions and favourite colours. Therefore, the Ukrainian folk art has a significant potential and is a source of ideas in creating modern clothing as well as interior items. Embroidery as a way of creating ornamental motifs on a textile material using various techniques is a common process for decorating clothes and interiors for the Ukrainians. Today, ornamental compositions of embroidered folk textiles could be transmitted into modern clothes using various technologies. However, the use of a knitting machine allows creating a pattern during the item production. The ornament transformation into a pattern for knitting can be carried out with graphic software by creating a grid with a cell size similar to the loop size of a knitted structure for corresponding interlooping. A number of clothing and interior items with ethnic motifs was created using the capabilities of flat knitting machines within the masters programme “Knitting Technology and Design” at the Textile Technology and Design Department of the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design.

Abstract:
The article describes the origins and prospects of the All-Ukrainian Center for Embroidery and Carpet Making in Reshetylivka, Poltava region. Its creation contributes to the implementation of state policy in the field of culture and provides the basis for the revival and preservation of embroidery and carpet weaving traditions as the oldest artistic craft. There is a problem of public awareness of the elements of intangible cultural heritage. The reason is the lack of information sources, communication technologies, and educational activities on relevant topics, as well as insufficient motivation to study these issues. It is emphasized that at the present stage of development of society in the world cultural space, there are significant changes associated with the comprehensive process of globalization, under the pressure of which languages disappear, traditions are forgotten and lost, weakened local cultures are on the verge of extinction. Traditional branches of Ukrainian culture contribute to the preservation of national identity, are a consolidating factor in the development of the nation, as well as an essential component of economic development. It is emphasized that due to the efforts of talented people, who make up the cultural center of Reshetylivka, the technology of «white-on-white embroidery» in 2017 was included in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine, and «traditions of plant carpet weaving» of Reshetylivka was also included in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine in 2018. On October 3, 2018, in accordance with the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 987, the state non-profit institution «All-Ukrainian Center of Embroidery and Carpet Making» was established in Reshetylivka on the basis of a former factory; this center of embroidery and carpet weaving is a cultural, educational, artistic, and research institution of culture, which belongs to the sphere of management of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. In the future, it is planned to study the history of famous Ukrainian families, dynasties, individual masters of embroidery, carpet weaving, weaving, publishing periodicals, scientific works on folk arts and crafts of embroidery and carpet heritage; participation in the training of scientific staff, in particular, craft researchers, museum specialists, culturologists, technology teachers; production of products and souvenirs decorated with artistic and national embroidery (clothing, interior, and ceremonial fabrics, hats, table and bedding accessories), manufacturing of carpets and artistic weaving products.

Abstract:
The female body in medieval Japanese Buddhist texts was characterized as unenlightened and inherently polluted. While previous scholarship has shown that female devotees did not simply accept and internalize this exclusionary ideology, we do not fully understand the many creative ways in which women sidestepped the constraints of this discourse. One such method Japanese women used to expand their presence and exhibit their agency was through the creation of hair-embroidered Buddhist images. Women bundled together and stitched their hair into the most sacred parts of the image—the deity’s hair or robes and Sanskrit seed-syllables—as a means to accrue merit for themselves or for a loved one. This paper focuses on a set of embroidered Japanese Buddhist images said to incorporate the hair of Chūjōhime (753?CE–781?CE), a legendary aristocratic woman credited with attaining rebirth in Amida’s Pure Land. Chūjōhime’s hair embroideries served to show that women’s bodies could be transformed into miraculous materiality through corporeal devotional practices and served as evidence that women were capable of achieving enlightenment. This paper emphasizes materiality over iconography and practice over doctrine to explore new insights into Buddhist gendered ritual practices and draws together critical themes of materiality and agency in ways that resonate across cultures and time periods.

This article explores some aspects of Hausa wild silk embroidered gowns known as riga, interpreting these famous and prestigious attires in the light of techniques and transformative processes. The author thus highlights implicit forms of knowledge underlying material practices about, first, the wearing and layering of highly decorated gowns and, second, the process of creating silk-embroidered motifs (on the outside gown) and inked patterns (on the inside gown) that stand as the objectification and expression of charismatic power through self-display. The author proposes that Hausa wild silk-embroidered gowns constitute a material identity of power in that they materialize individual as well as group social status, prestige, fame and wealth. The empirical materials derive from ongoing fieldwork in northern Nigeria on the production and use of wild silk, a particular substance/material to which mystic properties are attributed and which plays an important role in the empowerment of riga.

Abstract:
The Indian folk arts with printing and embroidery play important role in creating new designs. Escalating demands of consumers requires modification in the fashion industry with respect to design, colour, style and technique. So an attempt was made to develop a design pool using folk art of Uttarakhand (aipan) for applique work. This also provides the opportunity to use the adapted traditional motifs on textiles and to preserve the beautiful traditional folk art. Aipan motifs were adapted for center design, border design, and buti design. Total thirty motifs / designs were developed keeping in mind their suitability for articles like bags, pencil purse and mobile holder. All the developed designs were subjected to visual evaluation for selection of two best designs in each category by the panel of thirty judges to find out the suitability of the developed designs for appliqué work. Thus total six motifs were selected for preparation of the five arrangements for each article. Four final selected arrangements with appliqué work were prepared using different embroidery stitches (slip hemming, couching, buttonhole and chain stitch). Plain red poplin and left-out fabrics were used to prepare articles. Finally articles were prepared by using selected arrangements and these prepared articles were highly appreciated by the consumers.

Abstract:
The article analyzes modern design practices based on symbolic and ornamental motives of folk art and their modern actualization in ethno-artistic areas, reflecting the relationship of traditional aspects with innovative, symbolic translation of cultural experience in time and space, creating symbolic value images, enhancing emotional environment and creating new narratives. Symbols, as the basis of the existence of the people, reflect the ethno- national aspects of culture, is an opportunity to find yourself at the level of relationship with your people, your nation, traditions. The appeal to archetypes is a special methodological perspective in which the meaning of the future is created due to the transformation of the past into a symbol. What is relevant in modern Ukrainian realities is that the whole cultural paradigm is being reconsidered and new ways of national identification are being sought. Embroidery is marked by a special color and incredible ornamentation, complex performance technique, which is reflected in the symbols of sociocultural practices, immersing in the depths of traditional norms and values that encourage to feel, assimilate, preserve and transmit. In modern domestic discourse, design practices are thought of as aimed at transforming the cultural environment into the integrity of cultural and natural components. They serve as a basis for forming an idea of the world and building harmonious relationships with the world. And the use of symbols-amulets and a certain emotional color is a special process of self-identification and the foundation for the revival of national culture and spiritual values, seeing their own place in the global cultural and artistic space. Therefore, the use of ornamental symbols in design practice is the basis for the revival of national culture and spiritual values and the formation of a new promising direction of Ukrainian design. Among the spiritual heritage of Ukraine with its color and incredible ornamentation, complex technique is embroidery, which is reflected in the symbols-codes of modern socio-cultural practices

Abstract:
Personal linens were key components of early modern health regimens. When they were visibly clean and bright white, linen shirtsleeves, collars and cuffs communicated the cleanliness of the wearer's body, as well as the state of their mind, morals and spirit. These functional garments and accessories could also be fashionable, especially when decorated with ruffles, lace and embroidery. Linens thus communicated hygienic, social, moral and financial information, which was generated by and reliant upon processes of laundry. This article explores some of these processes, especially as they pertain to linen shirts, cuffs and ruffs owned by non-elite people living in northern Italian cities. It brings archival, visual and material sources together with evidence generated through the re-creation of early modern processes of caring for clothing to show how ‘doing the laundry’ imparted linens with social and financial meanings and values.

Abstract:

The growth of the Islamic economy is currently growing rapidly. This can be seen from the number of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that adopt the principles of Islamic business. Sharia MSME is a means of creating jobs and encouraging economic progresses, and advancing private sector businesses. The emergence of many new entrepreneurs who adopted the sharia system in Aceh becomes a great opportunity as a center for sharia products. Not only sharia products, Sharia MSMEs more broadly include the application of the Islamic financial system, including culture, entertainment, lifestyle, and tourism. The need for Aceh's flagship products wrapped in nuances of Islamic principles is still very limited in Aceh. It becomes an obstacle to make Aceh as a tourist destination with Islamic principles. The number of embroidery craftsmen is still less compared to the number of requests. This condition is based on the work that is still traditional and has not used a computerized machine yet. The limitations of human resource capabilities often become obstacles for using technology, production processes, and business development. The increase in sharia tourism will have a positive impact on the improvement of sharia MSMEs. This can be seen from the level of creativity, knowledge, and marketing according to tourist demand. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant influence of creativity, knowledge, and marketing to the improvement of Islamic MSMEs. This research has been conducted with questionnaires for the entrepreneurs’ MSMEs of embroidery products in Aceh. The results of this study indicate that createvity, knowledge, and marketing simultaneously influence the improvement of sharia MSMEs. Partially, creativity and knowledge variables do not influence the improvement of sharia MSMEs, while marketing affects the improvement of sharia MSMEs significantly.

Abstract:
The introduction of time-based media into the design stage opened up a new understanding of architectural and represented space as a dematerialized, dynamic, and user-dependent concept. Unbuildable architectural projects always relied on specific techniques and media. Their radical nature usually channelled innovative artistic currents and visualization tools, like collage and pop art aesthetics in the works of Archigram. Cinema is yet another ground for such deliberations. With Instant City (Archigram’s Peter Cook and Ron Herron) and The Zero Theorem (Terry Gilliam) the problem of dematerialization is being channelled by architectural/spatial proposals that involve a range of literary tropes, cultural texts, and filmic intertexts, in order to create a rich embroidery of references that forward a new look upon architectural production as a practice of creating protocols for dynamic and all the more elusive imagery. This article’s central objective lies in the task of reframing a discussion on iconicity, media facades, and mutative building skins, so as to include modes of cinematic portrayal that are not just contents of architectural “messages”, but also their “media”.
