Lentsch, Bertrand. "La creation poetique chez john ashbery : themes, structures et style." Paris 10, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA100147.

Full text
Abstract:
John ashbery's poetry is distinguished by the ability of consciousness to include a wide range of disorderly perceptions in unequivocal works, hence their creating a sense of indiscrimination and inconsistency. These mental constructions are yet similar to some paintings that are based on the tension between competing forces thus aiming at the epiphanic disclosure of the meaning of such endeavours. The matter under investigation in this doctoral thesis is first that of the nature of the contending forces at work in those metaphorical developments. The general purpose is to show that their efficiency stems from the balance reached between a "putting in" and a "leaving out" process in what he deems a scrutiny of the scenario of his stream of consciousness. The poems which are here analysed therefore reveal their trul y dramatic and oracular character. They all testify to the extent of the author's query about the very viability of meaning. Five out of the thriteen so far published collections of poetry are here examined. They bear out the collapse of the so-called "subject fit for poetry" and that of any appropriateness of a sublime language at play within the conversion of an opening incident into a de-alienating scene. The unremitting subversion of hackneyed progressions is hence conceived as a way of turning perception toward the truth of sensations that are wilfully shorn of the layers of culture imposed on them by tradition. In this view, john ashbery's poetic creation withnesses to his endless quest for the genuineness of a purified intuition of reality

Robins, Amanda School of Arts UNSW. "Slow art : meditative process in painting and drawing." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Arts, 2006. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/31214.

Full text
Abstract:
This exegesis is an exploration of meditative process in painting and drawing and accompanies an exhibition of paintings and large drawings called What Lies Beneath. The text contains several passages, called "meditations," which accompany the themes approached in the chapters and give insight into the thoughts and practices of the artist. The methodology involves the examination of the evidence of the work produced by selected artists, looking at the words of artists in notebooks, diaries and interviews and surveying a small number of local contemporary artists. The text opens up the possibilities of drapery and garments and of still life as paths to meditative practice in painting and drawing. The qualities that characterize meditative process/practice, derived from my observations, are categorized. Some of the strengths of these processes are revealed through the examination of the work of artists, both contemporary and historical. The work of Vermeer, Sanchez Cotan, Francisco Zurbaran and contemporary artists Anne Judell, Simon Cooper, Jude Rae, Alison Watt and Eva Hesse highlight different aspects of the meditative process in painting and drawing. The art works in the exhibition are documented and bring out the meditative processes that have contributed to their creation, including the use and meaning of the subject (drapery and the garment as a form of still life).

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to produce new knowledge concerning the perceived user’s value generated using machine learning technologies that activate data network effects factors that create value through various business model themes. The data network effects theory represents a set of factors that increase the user’s perceived value for a platform that uses artificial intelligence capabilities. The study followed an abductive research approach where initially found facts were matched against the data network effects theory to be put in context and understood. The study’s data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with experts who were active within the research area and chosen based on their practical experience and their role in the digitization of the healthcare sector. The results show that three out of six factors were fully realized contributing to value creation while two of the factors showed to be partially realized in order to contribute to value creation and that is justified by the exclusion of users' perspectives in the scope of the research. Lastly, only one factor has limited contribution to the value creation due to the heavy regulations limiting its realization in the health sector. It is concluded that data network effects moderators contributed differently in the activation of various business model themes for value creation in a general manner where further studies should apply the theory in the assessment of one specific AI health offering to take full advantage of the theory potential. The theoretical implications showed that the data network factors may not necessarily be equally activated to contribute to value creation which was not initially highlighted by the theory. Additionally, the practical implications of the study’s results may help managers in their decision-making process on which factors to be activated for which business model theme.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to give the reader an insight into the graphical interface of a Learning Management system, the theme, how it functions and its importance. The main point is how the creation of new themes can be done, and two different approaches are examined and compared. The use of learning management systems have been growing rapidly over the past years. Modern learning, be it basic school, higher education or professional training, is almost always supported by some learning management system where both instructors and participators share learning material, assignments, discussion, among other things. The theme of a learning management system is of great importance and can have a substantial impact on the efficiency of the actual learning process. Themes might also differ in their purpose, thus depending on the target audience, creating a specific theme might be desirable. The work done in this paper examines the structure and function of themes in the web based Totara learning management system, and looks at two different approaches to creating new themes. These approaches involve creating something from scratch, and cloning an already existing theme. The conclusion drawn from the work done in this paper is that the most efficient way of creating a new theme, is through cloning an already existing theme. Only when time and experience is plentiful, and a full control over the theme structure is desirable, is creating a theme from scratch a viable option.

Moore, Anthony Michael. "The theme of Creation in the Fourth Gospel." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1497/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration into the relationship between the narrative of the Fourth Gospel and the opening chapter of the book of Genesis. Following the understanding established by E. D. Freed, Maarten J. J. Menken and others that John had knowledge of or access to the Septuagint, the Greek text of the Fourth Gospel is combed for vocabulary that might allude to the creation sequence in Gen. 1:1-2:4a. The purpose of the study is to approach the question of whether or not John was intentionally alluding to the creation narrative, not only in the Prologue or in the Passion and Resurrection Narratives but throughout the gospel as a whole. Beginning with the reference to the Risen Jesus as 'the gardener' in Jn 20:15 and the associated' garden' setting of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, the issue of intentional authorial allusion to the garden of Paradise in Gen. 2-3 is addressed; this connection, suggested by E. C. Hoskyns, R. H. Lightfoot and others, had been dismissed by Raymond E. Brown but this thesis shows that there is scope for reexamining the allusion and opening up the possibility that there was a broader theological schema in John's mind. Assuming the literary unity of the gospel in its present canonical form, a chapter is devoted to the listing of 'creation indicators' and a comprehensive survey reveals that much of the vocabulary of Gen.1:1-2:4a is peppered throughout the Fourth Gospel and, most significantly, within the 'signs' narratives. An original study argues that the signs are a re-presentation of the days of creation in the Genesis sequence. The thesis concludes by inviting a re-reading of the Fourth Gospel with the creation theme as an Ursatz and an implied 'high' Christology with Jesus as the Creator/Gardener.

Preira, Jamie. "Indoor Nature-Based Art Activities| The themes students discuss while creating nature-based art." Thesis, Prescott College, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10276991.

Full text
Abstract:

When children can understand their surrounding environments (whether it be the natural environment or their built environment) it is said that they can connect more deeply and have a heightened awareness of their surroundings (Kelly, 2013). This connection and heightened awareness can open their eyes to prevalent environmental issues, increasing their sense of social responsibility. The research on this type of learning generally occurs in formal institutions (i.e., a school), non-formal centers (i.e., at an outdoor education center), or informal meeting places (i.e., at a park with a parent). I conducted a primarily qualitative study?utilizing arts-based research (ABR) methods and environmental art education theory?to better understand school-aged children?s (5-10 years of age) engagement with nature during indoor nature-based art classes. I observed children within a small, mountain-town school (Kindergarten ? 5th grade) while they engaged in various artistic activities such as drawing, finger painting, and watercolor. My purpose was to gauge whether indoor nature-based art activities compelled elementary aged children to engage in meaningful conversation about nature. I assessed meaningfulness by the structure of their sentences and topics of their discussions that ensued. This assessment included looking for changes over time in students? reaction to the art they were creating and the subsequent connections they were making. Results demonstrate that students are deeply engaged in their artwork and talk mostly about memories related to nature and what aspects of nature their artwork inspires. Given that these activities provoked students to be thinking about nature, schools may want to consider conducting similar activities if they are unable to provide quality time outdoors for their students but want to help their students maintain a nature connection.

Bilous, James Eric. "Concatenative Synthesis for Novel Timbral Creation." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2016. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1597.

Full text
Abstract:
Modern day musicians rely on a variety of instruments for musical expression. Tones produced from electronic instruments have become almost as commonplace as those produced by traditional ones as evidenced by the plethora of artists who can be found composing and performing with nothing more than a personal computer. This desire to embrace technical innovation as a means to augment performance art has created a budding field in computer science that explores the creation and manipulation of sound for artistic purposes. One facet of this new frontier concerns timbral creation, or the development of new sounds with unique characteristics that can be wielded by the musician as a virtual instrument. This thesis presents Timcat, a software system that can be used to create novel timbres from prerecorded audio. Various techniques for timbral feature extraction from short audio clips, or grains, are evaluated for use in timbral feature spaces. Clustering is performed on feature vectors in these spaces and groupings are recombined using concatenative synthesis techniques in order to form new instrument patches. The results reveal that interesting timbres can be created using features extracted by both newly developed and existing signal analysis techniques, many common in other fields though not often applied to music audio signals. Several of the features employed also show high accuracy for instrument separation in randomly mixed tracks. Survey results demonstrate positive feedback concerning the timbres created by Timcat from electronic music composers, musicians, and music lovers alike.

Abstract:
The creative writing is preceded by a critical introduction that explores the history of the steampunk genre, the YA literature movement, and many novels and short stories in both genres. The critical introduction establishes genre guidelines and expectations, as well as provides examples for important qualities of the genre. The nature of the story required additional research into steam engines, WWI history, the RMS Olympic, tree climbing ascension techniques, and various other subjects. This informal research was used to improve the descriptions of technology in the creative work, as well as the naval terminology and battle tactics performed by steam powered ships before and during the first World War. Though not a historical novel, this information assists in building a believable steampunk world.

Abstract:
Scholars argue that knowledge is a fundamental source for retaining competitive advantage, as value creation depends fundamentally on the competence of a firm to create new knowledge (Nonaka and Toyama, 2002). Knowledge creation is based on conversion of two types of knowledge: tacit knowledge, which is constituent to the comprehensiveness of an individual’s consciousness, and explicit knowledge, which can be readily communicated. Based on the framework by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995), one of the most significant and cited models, the motivation of this research is to expand knowledge creation model from intra- to inter-organizational relationships theoretically and explore supply chain knowledge creation process in practice to examine the sequences of this extension. Studying three firms in the fashion industry, this thesis contributes to research on knowledge creation by taking a socio-technological perspective through a qualitative study of supply chain management. The research findings provide support for the proposed theoretical model in which social relationships and technology interact in the knowledge creation process to diminish supply chain complexities. While many supply chain relationships I observed appear to be influential in creating knowledge, one similarity among the cases here is that the effectiveness of the knowledge creation process has been limited due to the lack of harmony in employing knowledge resources. Knowledge creation process may be superficial due to the fact that they require a large revolution in work routines regarding the use of technology. Even where there is some degree of socialization, the process is partial because of incongruities between individuals understanding and corporate supply chain strategies.

Abstract:
Southern Illinois University’s Department of Theater presented Children of Eden on the McLeod Theater stage in October of 2016. This Thesis is an examination of the process of designing the costumes for the production from the early play analysis, through the design, to the performances. Stephen Schwartz and John Caird’s Children of Eden is a musical exploration of the first nine chapters of the book of “Genesis.” Our production of Children of Eden focused on creating a global exploration of the familial themes. The first chapter of this document contains an in-depth analysis of this script. Chapter Two covers the designing of the show. The third chapter discusses the production process. Chapter Four offers an overview of the tech rehearsals and performances of the show. Finally, the fifth chapter examines the original goals set for myself and the execution of each goal. The visual process for each character’s design can be found in the Appendices, including rough sketches, renderings, fitting photos and production photographs.

Khanyile, Dumisani. "Organisational culture and knowledge creation : the relationship between knowledge creation enablers and organisational culture types." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/4045.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The thesis studies the relationship between knowledge creation and organisational culture. To do that the relations between Nonaka's enabling conditions and the four organisational culture types according to the competing value framework of Cameron and Quinn were tested in two organisations. Whilst many authors are critical of the specifics of Nonaka and Takeuchi’s model of knowledge conversion, most seem to agree with their argument about the requisite enabling conditions for knowledge creation. It is argued that these enabling conditions are shaped by the organisational culture and therefore this relation is of some importance. The empirical research was based on two part questionnaire. The first part of the questionnaire concerned the knowledge creation enablers. The indicators for this part of the instrument had to be developed from the knowledge creation literature. The second part of the questionnaire was based on the validated Cameron and Quinn organisational culture assessment instrument. Since Nonaka recommends a middle-up-down approach for managing knowledge creation in organisations, the questionnaire was directed at the middle management of the selected organisations. 140 questionnaires were sent out and two organisations had adequate responses for statistical data analysis. The results showed that one organisation has a strong market culture. This organisation displayed requisite variety, creative chaos and autonomy as enablers for knowledge creation. The market culture is an organisation’s response to an environment filled with complexities of the brand market which requires the presence of requisite variety and creative chaos. The organisation uses autonomous work teams, hence the prominence of autonomy. The second organisation competes in the business solutions market. Here, the dominant culture type was that of a clan and the organisation was strong in most knowledge creation enablers except redundancy and ba. The dominance in clan culture is in line with a medium size company that is competing in the big league of providers of business solutions and the organisation believes that its success is in providing unique business solutions thanks to teamwork and working like family. It is concluded that for an organization to be competitive requires one dominant appropriate culture and not necessarily all knowledge creating enablers.

Abstract:
This paper explores the `creative' process of postmemory in relation to family photographs, story telling, the absence of memory, and the subsequent construction of new and elastic family histories in my MFA thesis artwork. I define postmemory and how it relates to the limited number of existing photographs that document my family's experience as displaced persons and immigrants. I also discuss how literalist art has influenced the works in my thesis exhibition and outline the reasons for the absence of actual photographs in my work. Then, drawing from Freud's ideas of the condensation of dreams and the formation of screen memories, I discuss the relationship between historical family photographs, the memories elicited by them, and the act of forgetting to reveal the elasticity of truth in postmemory and how my work represents the beginnings of a personal understanding of a fragmented family history riddled with holes and unknowns. I also describe and discuss the two installation works found in my thesis exhibition, which are titled Descendant and Lineage. Finally, I outline the influence of other artists and describe how these ideas are tied together in my artwork.

Wei, Charles C. H. "BOTTOM-UP ONTOLOGY CREATION WITH A DIRECT INSTANCE INPUT INTERFACE." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2009. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/61.

Full text
Abstract:
In general an ontology is created by following a top-down, or so called genus-species approach, where the species are differentiated from the genus and from each other by means of differentiae [8]. The superconcept is the genus, every subconcept is a species, and the differentiae correspond to roles. To complete it a user organizes data into a proper structure, accompanied with the instances in that domain in order to complete the construction of an ontology. It is a concept learning procedure in a school, for example. Students first learn the general knowledge and apply it to their exercise and homework for practice. After they are more familiar with the knowledge, they can use what they have learned to solve the problems in their daily life. The deductive learning approach is based on the fundamental knowledge that a student has acquired already. By contrast, a more intuitive way of learning is the bottom-up approach, which is based on atomism. That is also a frequently used way for humans to acquire knowledge. From sensing the world by vision, hearing, and touching, people learn information about actual objects, i.e., instances, in the world. After an instance has been collected, a relationship between it and existing knowledge will be created and an ontology will be formed automatically. The primary goal of this thesis is to make a better instance input interface for the ontology development tool Protégé to simplify the procedure of ontology construction. The second goal is to show the feasibility of a bottom-up approach for the building of an ontology. Without setting up the organization of classes and properties (slots) first, a user simply inputs all the information from an instance and the program will form an ontology automatically. It means after an instance has been entered, the system will find a proper location inside of the ontology to store it.

Full text
Abstract:
Monodisperse emulsions are a special class of emulsion where all droplets are of uniform size. The properties of emulsions (rheology, appearance, stability, reaction kinetics) are determined by the properties of both continuous and dispersed phases but also by the characteristics of the droplets themselves. It is for this reason that monodisperse emulsions are often sought after, as droplet size can have such a large influence upon emulsion behaviour. Having a uniform emulsion results in more predictability and allows for easier design in emulsion properties. Monodisperse emulsions find uses in many academic and industrial fields including pharmaceuticals, food science, paints, and coatings. This work covers two broad approaches to monodisperse emulsion creation; microfluidics and controlled shear. Microfluidics is a rapidly emerging technology where liquid flows are constrained to sub-millimetre channel sizes thus creating highly laminar and controllable flows. The methods are used in various lab on chip, and droplet creating applications. A study is undertaken on the nature of buoyancy-driven formation of drops from microchannels, attempting to further understand the fundamental principles of monodisperse drop generation at nozzles. Droplet producing microfluidic devices often suffer, however, from jetting when the desired emulsions are viscous or have low interfacial tensions, resulting in polydispersity. This work introduces two methods to overcome this, surfactant shielding and core-shell templating. Surfactant shielding is a method by which the nozzle of a droplet producing capillary tip is protected from surfactants by a tertiary, pure continuous phase thus limiting the reduction of interfacial tension at the point of droplet creation. Core-shell templating is a method of introducing water droplets into the stream of a would-be jetting system. These water droplets introduce regular instabilities which have the effect of forcing the system into a quasi-dripping regime and thus create highly monodisperse viscous emulsions. Controlled shear is another method for creating monodisperse emulsions whereby a coarse emulsion is subjected to a uniform shear stress resulting in a smaller more monodisperse emulsion. The work investigates two geometries for doing this, a cylinder-curved plate and a cylinder-flat plate. Both these designs are shown to have higher throughput rates than conventional shear methods. In the final part of this work, microfluidics and controlled shear are combined in an attempt to utilise the contrasting benefits found in both techniques. A study is undertaken in the possibility of shearing monodisperse precursor emulsions created via microfluidic techniques, to obtain uniform emulsions of much smaller size. A microfluidic shear cell is also introduced which aims to combine the benefits of a shear device (increased throughput rates, ability to handle viscous fluids) with the benefits of microfluidics (no moving parts, more control).

Butler, Brian Jeffrey. "Dynamic Model Creation and Scripting Support in the Horizon Simulation Framework." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2012. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/697.

Full text
Abstract:
Dynamic model creation and support for the Lua scripting language was added to the Horizon Simulation Framework used for the verification and validation of system-level requirements. The addition of scripting support allows for subsystem models and their algorithms to be defined using a simpler scripting language, rather than C++. The Luabind library by Rasterbind software is used to expose the C++ algorithms and classes to Lua that are already defined in the framework. Interoperability between Lua and C++ code allows for the ease of use of a scripting language while utilizing the utility classes and functions already created. The dynamic model creation algorithm developed allows for the structure and logic of the simulated system to be defined completely using XML and text files as input to the framework. Dynamic model creation prevents the need to re-compile the framework every time small changes are made and greatly simplifies the changes required to simulate a different model. A runtime analysis shows that using a scripting language does not decrease the performance significantly, while increasing usability and decreasing the time required to set up simulations. Tests where the scripted code uses only classes and function exposed by luabind show that there is virtually no performance decrease when compared to the same algorithms in C++. Performance decreases as more of the algorithm implemented is executed in Lua. An example test scenario that represents the typical use of the framework showed only a minor decrease in performance. The multi-threaded scheduler developed works with the scripting support and allows for modern multi-core or multi-processor computers to be used most efficiently for simulations. This thesis describes the algorithms of dynamic model creation and scripting support, as well as the methodology used to expose C++ code to Lua. This thesis also presents the architecture changes required to support dynamic model creation, scripting support, and multi-threaded scheduling. Finally, runtime results of the added scripting support are presented.

Abstract:
The research in this paper examined the legitimacy of land-use planning when there are polarizing views of how a specific project should develop. The focused was on the case study of Skutberget in the municipality of Karlstad, Sweden, were two separate planning processes are ongoing. The current development plans regards a Moomin inspired theme park where the company Moomin OY is the developer, as well as an improvement and development of the existing recreational park were the municipality is the responsible part. In a Swedish context, municipalities have a strong authority when it comes to land-use planning, a right often labelled as a “planning monopoly”. This research fills a gap in the scientific academic literature when it comes to assessing democratic processes on a local level, with a special regard to spatial planning. Legitimacy in a representative democracy is a multifaceted concept, which requires both aspects of political representation and social acceptance for a decision to be deemed legitimate. With the case study, political representation regarding both a desire and aversion of developing Skutberget exist. This difference in opinion regarding the development of Skutberget is reflected in public attitude as well, were the theme park of Moomin OY is the biggest dispute. People reflecting different perceptions have taken it upon themselves to engage with media outlets to vocalise their opinions and news articles of the development of Skutberget is a recurring feature in local newspapers. Full social acceptance and consent are, therefore, lacking for the process of developing Skutberget. But as the opinions differ in Karlstad, it is a matter of interpretation of what consist of social acceptance and how to value it in the planning and decision-making process.

Abstract:
The goal of this research study is to develop a model of information that will enable media conglomerates and other companies, with theme park investments, to make informed and effective decisions based on scholarly and empirical evidences. In order to do this, the following research study uses historic, scholarly, journalistic, and focus group evidences to consolidate the information necessary to create a model to support concepts and designs. The paper begins with establishing why it is important for media conglomerates, with theme park investments, to integrate cinema into the park’s design. Then it looks back through the history of cinema and theme parks, identifying the similarities and differences. Furthermore, it analyzes the development of Universal Studios Hollywood and Disneyland. The study uses the history of Hollywood from its beginning to the decentralization to parallel the development of the movie-based theme park, and how the decentralization of Hollywood and the rise of the movie-based theme park support one another. As the idea of the convergence of one media with another is not a new concept, information on media convergence is used as part of the scholarly research in this area. Because movies and movie-based attractions are each forms of storytelling, the study includes prolific information on media, film, literary, and psychological theories as supporting evidence. The empirical research method utilized in the research, specific to this study, includes four focus groups in Florida, New York City, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles and one interview with a theme park president. Throughout the study, concepts of narrative, spectacle, pleasure, character, and setting are addressed in terms of how these elements work in movies and movie-based theme park attractions.

Abstract:
The psychological construction of Robert Penn Warren's characters is an established tenet among Warren critics as is the influence of Sigmund Freud's work upon Warren's fiction. Specifically the oedipal nature of Warren's male characters has been widely discussed especially in regard to plots culminating in patricide. Based upon this criticism of Robert Penn Warren's novels to date, Warren's female characters are revealed to be developed likewise upon an oedipal paradigm. The female paradigm which corresponds to Freud's Oedipus complex in women is the Cinderella tale. These stories, some at least a thousand years old, were critically divided into three main types by Marian Roalfe Cox a century ago. These three archetypes as well as the writings of Sigmund Freud were a part of the intellectual climate from which Warren as artist drew. The eleven females in Warren's ten novels that are developed sufficiently for study—given physical, emotional, and psychological construction—correspond to the three Cinderella archetypes. As such this reading offers a new understanding of Warren's fictional women by revealing them not as aberrations of "normal" women but simply as types of women first revealed to us in our earliest childhood tales.

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is generally accepted that profitable relationships with customers are increasingly important in determining the long-term success of the modem enterprise. Customer relationship management (CRM) is widely considered as an appropriate methodology for building strong and mutually beneficial relationships with customers and, therefore, the study established the definition and scope of CRM. Customer knowledge could be considered a cornerstone of any CRM strategy and the ability of the enterprise to create and leverage customer knowledge is viewed as a source of competitive advantage. The study aimed at establishing clarity on the methodologies and approaches to the organizational knowledge creation process. Finally, the integration of knowledge creation and leverage processes into the CRM strategy was considered. Scrutiny of the available literature revealed a comprehensive description of the concept of CRM. The various models of CRM presented in the study clearly illustrated the different focus areas and components of CRM. The most prominent characteristics of a CRM strategy were found to be an emphasis on strategy, the networking of key stakeholders, customer intimacy and the use of appropriate technology. The approaches to the creation of organizational knowledge were analysed and it was found that the conversion between tacit and explicit knowledge is key to the creation of organizational knowledge. The generally accepted principles for the leverage of knowledge were adapted for possible incorporation into a CRM strategy. The salient conclusion of this study was that a knowledge creation process could be used to build the enterprise's stock of customer knowledge. It was found that the principles of knowledge leverage could be applied to the customer knowledge base in order to build lasting and profitable customer relationships. Recommendations were offered for the improved leverage of a CRM strategy through the integration of knowledge creation, knowledge leverage and CRM methodologies and principles. Finally, suggestions were made for further academic research on the anatomy and implementation of CRM.

Wu, Wen-Jun. "Creation of a Vector for Regulated Expression of Antisense RNA in Escherichia Coli." TopSCHOLAR®, 1992. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/3003.

Full text
Abstract:
A plasmid (pGEM-SD) was constructed in which the Shine-Dalgarno sequence had been deleted from pGEM-7zf(+) plasmid to generate a vector for regulated expression of antisense RNA. The binding of antisense RNA to mRNA provides a potent mechanism by which specific transcripts can be translationally inactivated. Although part of the lac operator sequence was deleted in pGEM-SD plasmid, it was proven that mRNA still can be induced under the control of lac promoter. Recombinant plasmids were generated by ligating bacterial genornic DNA into pGEM-SD plasmid, but the orientation of the inserted gene with respect to the lac promoter has not been determined. These preliminary results show that gene expression can be turned on and off via the pGEM-SD vector. Future experiments will screen antisense recombinant clones for those which would inhibit specific gene products by plating on different selective indicator media both with and without the inducer IPTG. This will allow investigation of the biological functions associated with genomic DNA sequences by means of gene mapping with antisense RNA.

Full text
Abstract:
ServiceSketch is a collaborative tabletop tool for service design. It was developed to address some of the challenges designers face when developing service systems, including the dynamic, intangible nature of service and the complexity of coordinating multiple stakeholders over time and space. The concept for the tool draws from literature on service design, tangible user interfaces, and co-creation. It was also informed by user research sessions with graduate design students. The interface of ServiceSketch consists of a large multi-touch surface display that reacts to finger touches and a provided set of physical objects. Both the hardware and software development of ServiceSketch are described in this document. ServiceSketch was evaluated with groups of graduate design students who were asked to perform small group service design activities using the tool. These sessions showed that ServiceSketch was successful in supporting common service design processes and even inspired many participants to suggest possible future developments for the tool. ServiceSketch also seemed to encourage a playful, collaborative approach to service design. The results of the project hint at the possibilities for a new breed of service design tool, one that focuses on facilitating conversations about service through an engaging, interactive medium.

This thesis examines the construction and deconstruction of home. These poems explore this theme largely through the poet's relation to geography and the natural world of the Great Lakes region, friends and family, experiences centered in human interconnectedness, traveling, the impact of technology, orientation in a cosmic space, the ways in which culture shapes and reshapes the one living inside it, and how in a 21st century world, one must still seek to show compassion for other living creatures. Through the utilization of metaphor, narrative, and imagination, this thesis journeys from the poet's home of Indiana to her ancestral roots of Ireland before returning to America with a more complex sense of identity as well as a renewed vision for the future.

Abstract:
Games as a means of education have been starting to become more of an everyday reality. Not only are games used in classrooms, but they are used in industry to train soldiers, medical staff, and even surgeons. This thesis focuses on physically active (i.e. embodied) multiplayer games as a means of education; not only by having students play, but also by having students create games. The embodied multiplayer aspect allows for a more interactive experience between players and their environment, making the game immersive and collaborative. In order to create these games, students must exercise their computational thinking abilities. The Wearable Learning Cloud Platform has been developed to enable students to design, create, and play multiplayer games for STEM. This platform allows users to create, edit and manage the behavior of mobile technologies that act as support to players of these games, specified as finite-state machines. The platform provides a means of testing created games, as well as executing (running) these games wirelessly by serving them to smartphones (or smart watches) so that students can play them with other students, in teams, or as individual players. The platform features a full drag and drop game editor with a sophisticated validation engine that prevents users from making syntax errors. Visually programmed games transpile to JavaScript for execution on the game server and provide two separate levels of programming abstraction. This platform has been successfully tested with 18 participants and they have shown significant improvements in their understanding of Finite State Machines and have shown an increase in their Computational Thinking abilities.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
This thesis explores phenomena surrounding the creation of knowledge, employing a multidisciplinary approach. To start with a view on the physical location of knowledge is discussed. This helps highlight the problem of defining knowledge and simultaneously introduces a set of fundamental and conceptual questions about the phenomena surrounding the creation of knowledge . The set of questions are then focussed on the process of knowledge creation. The investigation starts in the field of archaeology, in particular at the dawn of modern civilisation, with views on the earliest forms of knowledge creation. From there the investigation moves on to aspects of contemporary neurology. This allows for a comparison between humans from the ancient past with humans of today thereby identifying a neurological link between these periods. Based on current research within the field of behavioural neurology it is posed that knowledge creation is a process initiated by the impact of electromagnetic fields on the brain. A review of the medical research within the neurological sciences on the effects of electromagnetic field stimulation shows it to be effective as a treatment modality, a behavioural modifier, a suppressor and facilitator of cognition, as well as a sensory modulator. The interaction of the brain with electromagnetic fields is shown as a form of transduction similar to that of regular sensory transduction. Since the transduction of electromagnetic stimuli can functionally modulate sensory reception, cognition, behaviour and some neurological conditions, the creation of sensory perception, cognition, behaviour and neurological conditions (all phenomena surrounding knowledge creation) can be shown as functionally dependant on the electro-chemical process of ferromagnetic transduction (magneto reception). The ferromagnetic transduction model may then be seen as the sensory mechanism that initiates and modulates the process of knowledge creation. The modulation of this process is revealed cognitively in savants, behaviourally in some of the greatest thinkers in history and on a planetary scale as a force of nature. The implications of these findings is that if the keys to the creation of knowledge have been found, great care needs to be taken when deciding to implement any type of artificial or natural modulation to neural firing rates not only because of the total effect modulation can have on the individual but also because of the social consequences resulting from those who wish to socially discriminate according to the ability of and beliefs arising from the knowledge creating process.

Abstract:
A computational model of the micro-ion thruster MiXI has been developed, analyzed, and partially verified. This model includes submodels that govern the physical, magnetic, electrostatic, plasma physics, and power deposition of the thruster. Over the past few years, theses have been conducted with the goal of running tests and analyzing the results; this model is used to understand how the thruster components interact so as to make predictions about, and allow for optimization of, the thruster operation. Testing is then performed on the thruster and the results are compared to the output of the code. The magnetic structure of the thruster was analyzed and numerous different configurations generated which were also evaluated by the optimizer and tested. Using the different configurations, models, and optimization tools, the total efficiency of the thruster is theoretically able to reach 69.4%. Operational testing of the thruster at many different throttle settings demonstrated a maximum total efficiency of 45.9 ±24.6%, discharge loss values as low as 109 ±25 eV/ion, and total power required as low as 50.5 ±0.1W to maintain thruster operation with beam extraction. Measurements of the plasma were taken using a Langmuir probe and the interpretation of the tests are used to verify the plasma physics submodel. Power draw measurements and analysis of the throttle inputs during testing are compared to the performance model outputs but were not accurate or consistent enough to fully verify the power deposition and plasma physics models. Analysis of the models and operational testing in this study have led to an increased understanding of the performance and operation of the MiXI-CP-V3 thruster, furthering the effort to create an efficient, flight capable micro-ion thruster.

Grumberg, Ryan Justin. "Two Perspectives on Perspectivism: Nietzsche's Attack on the 'In-Itself'." OpenSIUC, 2013. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/1104.

Full text
Abstract:
Instead of choosing between reading Nietzsche's perspectivism as a metaphysical thesis or as one relating to his critique of traditional morality, this paper intends to show that these are but two sides of the same coin. As regards the metaphysical position, I argue that perspectivism is a version of idealism that critiques the cogency of the `thing-in-itself,' thereby moving beyond the appearance/reality distinction whilst retaining the fundamental tenant that the subjective contribution to reality is irreducible. As regards Nietzsche's transvaluation of all values, I argue that the notion of perspectivism is utilized to critique the idea of the `Good in-itself,' thereby shifting the focus of morality from that of universally applicable prohibitions and obligations to a sort of virtue ethics in which the subject's unique perspective is given expression in and through their creation of values. Given that, I argue for a certain continuity in Nietzsche's thought, such that perspectivism is best seen as an argument against realism, the basic tenant of which - i.e. the inconceivability of the `in-itself' - remains constant even whilst Nietzsche's interests shift during the evolution of his writings.

Abstract:
Incivility is defined as rude and discourteous behavior or displaying a lack of regard for others. As indicated by prior research (e.g., Pearson, Andersson, & Porath. 2000), the frequency and conscquences of uncivil behavior may result in a decline in psychological well-being, reduced job satisfaction, decreased organizational commitment, and increased turnover. However, much of the research to date has examined the relationship between personally experienced incivility and an assortment of job outcomes (Andersson & Pearson, 1999; Cortina et al., 2001; Pearson et al., 2000). The current study is distinct in that it addressed some of the potential factors that are likely to lead to incivility. Specifically, this study examined how job governance, autonomy, interaction style, competition, and email reliance relate to a climate of incivility. Data for the study come from a national sample of law school faculty (N =1,300; 52% males; 86% white) who were members of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). Results from a series of multiple regression analyses indicated that four of the five proposed antecedents (autonomy, interaction style, governance, and competition) were predictive of an uncivil workplace climate. Results also show that autonomy is a particularly strong predictor of incivility as demonstrated by a stepwise regression analysis. Implications for organizations are discussed.

In the artistic cultural development, although Han culture is the mainstream art, non-mainstream aboriginal art comparatively presents more profound cultural meanings. As diverse cultures sprang up in the postmodern society which hence went through successive historical deconstruction and reconstruction, history had been rewritten with collective memory. Being governed by diverse cultures in a century results in the continual loss of their traditional rituals and customs. Nonetheless, aborigines’ movement in 1980’s is the beginning of their self-awareness. Undergoing stigmatization and striving for rights and cultural recognition, aborigines started literary writing and artistic creations that facilitated the establishment of real aboriginal cultural appearance. Art is a way to contain and pass down traditional tribal cultures. Searching for their lost tribal cultures, aborigines stored collective tribal memory up through artistic creations. Derived from their recognition, their art presents aboriginal characteristics and demonstrates the strengths and esthetics as well as their simple and sincere emotions. This thesis is focused on the study of artistic themes and cultural meanings of contemporary aboriginal arts in Taitung. The author starts with examining the status quo of aboriginal artistic development in Taitung from the aspects of aboriginal people, cultural policies, and art. Three artists, Haku, Hsi Chu Su Fei, and shi yingyuan, are selected as examples to represent the development of art, which are respectively tribal art, modern art, and contemporary art. The artistic themes and cultural meanings are studied to express the progress of ingenious art. At last, the thesis analyzes cultural development and artistic practice to figure out how aborigines pass down and innovate cultures after inner self disintegrates and reconstructs collective cultural memory, and ends with the analysis of the transformation of Taitung aborigines’ artistic images and characteristics.
