Abstract:
A SECOND UNIVERSE is a memoir-in-essays that traces the author’s coming of age and her pursuit of self-discovery, belonging, and healing in all its forms. The book opens in the past, diving into the lives of the author’s parents before she was born and shedding light on the many obstacles they overcame to bring her earth-side. Set against the backdrop of the Southern Utah deserts and the clarity the author finds in the natural world, these essays wind through the author’s different childhood homes, down the lonely and desolate road of a sister’s addiction, and into the darkness that comes as she braces for her father’s impending blindness. Similar to Brenda Miller’s LISTENING AGAINST THE STONE, this collection explores the inherent desire for human connection and spiritual insight that we search for in the places we live, the people we love, and the nature that surrounds us.

Abstract:
Survival Tips For A Parallel Universe is a collection of poems concerned with sudden change, limitations, and the way those changes and limits might develop and burden intimate relationships. The collection’s central sequence, “Survival Tips For A Parallel Universe: Parts One, Two, Three, and Four,"? works through an imagined alternate world where the human and the mechanical suddenly and inexplicably merge, creating avenues of possibility that ultimately end in the unknowable, the unreachable, or failure. The surrounding poems further explore the nuance of the unknowable—through language both lyrical and plain-spoken—questioning reality and perception, specifically in their relation to memory, love, and desire. Likewise, the collection largely moves from a second person point-of-view to a first-person perspective, generating a shifting subject and a movement toward a tangible and more direct articulation of feeling and heart. While this collection draws a strong influence from the invention and tradition of the New York School of poetry, it also attempts a new way of speaking—and, in turn, a new way of knowing.

Abstract:
In this dissertation we propose a new accelerating relativistic cosmology whose matter content is composed only by baryons and cold dark matter. The nonexistence of a dark energy component implies that our scenario is based on a reduction of the so-called dark sector of the Universe. The present accelerating stage in this model is powered by the negative pressure des\\-cribing the cold dark matter particle production induced by the variable gravitational field of the Universe. For a spatially flat universe ($\\Omega _ + \\Omega _b = 1$), as predicted by inflation, this kind of scenario has only one free parameter and the differential equation governing the evolution of the scale factor is exactly the same of the $\\Lambda$CDM model. In this case, we find that the effectively observed matter density parameter is $\\Omega_ = 1 - \\alpha$, where $\\alpha$ is a constant parameter related to the cold dark matter creation rate. By applying a $\\chi^2$ statistical test for Supernovae type Ia data (Union Sample 2008), we constrain the free parameters of the model for spatially flat and curved cases. In particular, to the flat case we find $\\alpha \\sim 0.71$, so that $\\Omega_ \\sim 0.29$, as independently inferred from weak gravitational lensing, large scale structure, cosmic background radiation, and other complementary observations.

Abstract:
Recent advances in observational cosmology indicate that the universe is undergoing an accelerating stage of expansion. The determination of the mechanism responsible for the cosmic acceleration is one of the most intriguing problems in science today. Among many candidates for the acceleration mechanism, the simplest and most economical explanation is to assume the existence of a cosmological constant associated with the vacuum energy. However, this interpretation leads to important conceptual problems associated with the nature of this component. In this thesis, we investigate the dynamics of different mechanisms of cosmic acceleration, comparing their predictions through several observational tests. In particular, we emphasize the scenarios based on creation of cold dark matter (CCDM), in which the present acceleration of the universe is produced without the presence of an exotic fluid as a result of the gravitationally induced dark matter production process. Initially, we have proposed a model in which the particle creation mechanism is able to produce a cosmology dynamically degenerated with respect to the standard model, CDM. We discussed the cosmological dynamics for the creation of cold dark matter and dark matter with pressure within the so-called model of Lima, Jesus & Oliveira (LJO). Through a statistical $\\chi^2$ test, we showed that the model provides a good fit to the type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) data. Subsequently, we studied the evolution of small density perturbations in a homogeneous background for CCDM type models through the Neo-Newtonian formalism. Restricting ourselves to the LJO model, the predictions obtained in this context were compared with those from the CDM model. We showed that the model is able to provide a very good fit to the linear growth rate observational data, for a flat universe and effective speed of sound $c^2_=-1$. Also within the CCDM scenario, we discussed a second original proposal with similar goodnes-of-fit and same degree of freedom to the models CDM and LJO, but with a non-degenerated dynamics. We derived the dynamics of the model and discussed its viability through the statistical analysis of measurements of SNe Ia and Hubble parameter in different redshifts $H(z)$, obtaining results in complete agreement. Finally, we discussed the dynamics of a model with vacuum decay ((t)CDM) and its description by scalar fields. Assuming the form of the vacuum term as a power series in the Hubble parameter, we derived the basic dynamic equations and the cosmological predictions of the model. We showed that when the energy exchange between the components of the dark sector is through the creation of particles, CCDM models and (t)CDM can share the same dynamics and thermodynamics under certain conditions. Additionally, we showed that the model is able to provide a good fit to the SNe Ia data and measurements of the CMB/BAO ratio. We also derived a description of CDM model by a scalar field, extending the validity of the model for other space-times and other gravitational theories. Our results show that there are several viable alternatives to the current standard model of cosmology, able to overcome the problems associated with the cosmological constant. The discussion of these alternatives is essential to a deeper understanding of the dynamics, composition and fate of the universe.

Abstract:
Context. The empirical study of Somerville in 2005 has shown that potential business benefits could be achieved by assessing and improving the Requirement Engineering (RE) process. However, currently there has not been an adequate instrument for practitioners to perform this work. Most known process assessment models such as CMMI and ISO do not pay intensive attention on RE whereas tailored models such as GPG and REPM do not cover the mentioned area extensively. Objectives. This thesis presents a conceptual research of RE process assessment in which the researcher aims to develop a practical model for evaluating the maturity of RE processes in industrial settings. Methods. A major part of this study consists of a systematic review and a literature review to explore all RE ―good practices‖ as a profound basis for the new model. Together with identifying potential activities, the two reviews also highly regarded the feasibility of certain practices and their context to assure the validity of the model. Conclusions. Based on the results of the reviews, Uni-REPM is formulated and introduced. The objective of Uni-REPM is twofold. Firstly, it is expected to be applicable for assessing the maturity of RE processes in various scenarios where an organization would use different development approaches. Secondly, it instructs practitioners with what to perform in RE processes and what they would benefit from such activities. As an assessment instrument, Uni-REPM serves a simple and low cost solution for practitioners to identify the status of their RE process. As a guidance tool, Uni-REPM is believed to lessen the gap between theoretical and practical worlds by transferring the available RE technologies from research to real work.

Abstract:
In order to prepare for the next in situ missions to Mars (MSL-2011 and ExoMars-2018), the objective of mythesis is to create a collection of relevant analogue rocks and minerals for calibrating and testing future (and existing) space flight instruments, in accordance with the geology of Mars. They were characterized using standard laboratory instrumentation (optical microscopy, Raman, IR, XRD, SEM, electron microprobe and ICP-MS), as well as by flight instrumentation in development (Mössbauer MIMOSII, ExoMars Raman and IR (MicrOmega) spectrometers). All the samples are described in an online database in the following web site: www.isar.cnrs-orleans.fr. A part of this thesis is dedicated to the development of a cathodoluminescence (CL) instrument that could potentially be adapted for space flight. Study of alteration processes of basalts on Earth that show some similarities to surface and subsurface processes occurring on Mars may help understand and interpret martian features. Therefore, to complete the collection, samples of hydrothermal and acidic weathered basalts were collected from the Skouriotissa mine in Cyprus. The mineralogical evolution of the basalt through different alteration facies was studied. Because terrestrial basalts are poorer in Fe and Mg than martian basalts, I synthesized two artificial martian basalts. The two artificial basalts are different in terms of cooling rate (~110°C/h and drop-quenched, >1200°C/h). Interestingly, the more slowly-cooled sample exhibits a spinifex texture, similar to that of komatiites. If similar basalts occur on Mars, such rocks when altered by aqueous processes may have astrobiological implications.

Hill, David T. "The optical and NIR luminous energy output of the Universe : the creation and utilisation of a 9 waveband consistent sample of galaxies using UKIDSS and SDSS observations with the GAMA and MGC spectroscopic datasets." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1696.

Abstract:
Theories of how galaxies form and evolve depend greatly on constraints provided by observations. However, when those observations come from different datasets, systematic offsets may occur. This causes difficulties measuring variations in parameters between filters. In this thesis I present the variation in total luminosity density with wavelength in the nearby Universe (z<0.1), produced from a consistent reanalysis of NIR and optical observations, taken from the MGC, UKIDSS and SDSS surveys. I derive luminosity distributions, best-fitting Schechter function parameterisations and total luminosity densities in ugrizYJHK, and compare the variation in luminosity density with cosmic star formation history (CSFH) and initial mass function (IMF) models. I examine the r band luminosity distribution produced using different aperture definitions, the joint luminosity- surface brightness (bivariate brightness) distribution in ugrizYJHK, comparing them to previously derived distributions, and how the total luminosity density varies with wavelength when surface brightness incompleteness is accounted for. I find the following results. (1) The total luminosity density calculated using a non-Sersic (e.g. Kron or Petrosian) aperture is underestimated by at least 15%, (2) Changing the detection threshold has a minor effect on the best-fitting Schecter parameters, but the choice of Kron or Petrosian apertures causes an offset between datasets, regardless of the filter used to define the source list, (3) The decision to use circular or elliptical apertures causes an offset in M* of 0.20 mag, and best-fitting Schechter parameters from total magnitude photometric systems have a flatter faint-end slope than Kron or Petrosian photometry, (4) There is no surface brightness distribution evolution with luminosity for luminous galaxies, but at fainter magnitudes the distribution broadens and the peak surface brightness dims. A Choloniewski function that is modified to account for this surface brightness evolution fits the bivariate-brightness distribution better than an unmodified Choloniewski function, (5) The energy density per unit interval, vf(v) derived using MGC and GAMA samples agrees within 90% confidence intervals, but does not agree with predictions using standard CSFH and IMF models. Possible improvements to the data and alterations to the theory are suggested.

EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL OF MAT-BUILDING FOR THE CREATION OF UNIVERSALLY DESIGNED ENVIRONMENTS Eren, Yasemin M. Arch., Department of Architecture Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Akö
zer Co-Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halime Demirkan June 2004, 152 Pages The goal of this study is to reread the strategies of formal organization in architecture, which are called &ldquo
mat-building&rdquo
and &ldquo
mat-urbanism&rdquo
, exploring their potential to contribute to the creation of universally designed built environments in the 21st century. The idea of mat-building was first delineated by Alison Smithson in 1974, in her article &ldquo
How to Recognize and Read Mat-Building,&rdquo
by means of its traditional and modern examples. The concept of universal design was first used in 1970&rsquo
s and reinterpreted by the American architect Ronald Mace in 1985. Since then, it has become a widely accepted design approach that is also known as &lsquo
inclusive design&rsquo
and &lsquo
design for all&rsquo
. Mat-building can be considered as a viable design approach that can respond to the crucial need for equally accessible, adjustable and adaptable built environments for all people all over the world. The study aims not only to evaluate the exemplary mat like configurations in light of the universal design principles. It also tries to point to the new ways for developing creative ideas and design theories, and emphasizes the significance of implementing the universal design approach in contemporary architecture and urbanism.

Full text
Abstract:
This study has designed a theoretical mapping of complex element relationships within the field of physical security. The main purpose of the mapping is to form individual knowledge structures for modelling and provide a relative understanding of overall risk based on different combinations of physical security arrangements. An understanding of overall risk for modelling purposes should lead to improvements in providing support for decision making within this field. The final series of knowledge structures in this study have been represented by value matrices for element pair assessments within the topic of physical security. The values that have been presented in the knowledge matrices have been gathered from expert opinion and converted to numerical data as a demonstration for a holistic approach to modelling physical security elements. A profile for each respondent and each category group has been developed to be compared for their degree of similarity with other profiles. A correlation technique provides an indication of the degree of consensus within the results.

Full text
Abstract:
In a study of the genesis of the 'dual system' of universal elementary education in England and Wales, obtaining at the present, it is easy to be influenced by the received view that the 1870 Elementary Education Act was a wise and judicious measure, albeit a move of limited potential, by W. E. Forster and the Liberal ministry of 1868, under William Gladstone.Educational historians, in the main, while setting out the importance of the 1870 Elementary Education Act, tend to expound an established opinion that the legislation was predominantly the work of Forster, who was ably assisted by an unwritten alliance between the Conservative Party and the Established Church. However, in order to understand fully, the developments leading up to the act itself, it is necessary to appreciate the little recognised, fundamental influences and pressures initiated by both radicals and nonconformists on the final outcome, and the resultant antagonisms in the struggle for universal elementary education, especially those political and religious controversies which were characterised by the wider debate of the years between 1866 and 1870.It is my purpose in the study to trace the developments of events over this period, and to give just deference to the specific details, preferences and campaigning that would set up the right conditions for the successful passing of legislation in 1870. In this respect, I contend that the final, amended bill, as passed by Forster, was the result of a four year agitation, and only really emerged in 1870, and in the form that it did, because of the radical and nonconformist influence. In qualifying this, it is not my purpose to support the ideas and philosophies of those protagonists, but rather to justify their importance as catalysts in the development of legislation, and in the moulding of the significant clauses which established the bill as a compromise. The act of 1870 was only successful because of the continued pressure and influence of the radicals and nonconformists in their challenge to the, hitherto, voluntary system of elementary education. The major part of this study is concerned with events between the latter part of 1866 and August, 1870 which saw the passing of Forster's education bill. This period saw the growth of both the Manchester Education Aid Society and the Birmingham Education Society; attempts at legislation for the reform of elementary education in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords on four occasions between 1867 and 1868; the collapse of the voluntaryists under Edward Baines; the passing of the second reform bill, which enabled Gladstone to form a radical and reforming ministry; the creation of the National Education League as a truly nationwide pressure group, and its adversary the National Education Union; and ultimately, the planning of the education bill and its passage on to the statute book.

Abstract:
Stylistics studies, included in the field of research related to the Portuguese language, aim at verifying how the choice of lexicon and literary neologisms can affect readers of literature. Among other authors, Alves (1990), Barbosa (1981), Lapa (1977), Mattoso Câmara Jr. (1985), and Martins (2000) studied this subject, highlighting the importance of lexical creation in connection with the expressiveness and creativity of many Brazilian writers. Bearing in mind the relevance of research in this field, we have chosen as corpus for our study the only prose works by playwright Ariano Suassuna, Romance d\'A Pedra do Reino and História d\'O Rei Degolado, characterised by the significant amount of lexical creation, which not only conveys to the reader the worldview of their narrator, Dom Pedro Dinis Ferreira-Quaderna, but also confer the text great originality, tending either to the subversion or validation of the literary genres which inspired Suassuna to create his works, especially chivalric romance and cordel literature. We have also verified how, through careful lexical manipulation strategies, Quaderna attempts to entice his readers by showing a single worldview, and trying to impose Brazilian cultural values that he deems to be important. From the identification and collection of neologisms created by Suassuna, the main objective of this study is to present a sample of syntagmatic and semantic neologisms found in both works, taking into consideration aspects such as the affectivity of words and the expressiveness of suffixes; thus highlighting how effectively Suassuna creates and uses classical and popular elements the basis of his cultural thinking.

Abstract:
The following study objective is to create a critical view about one of the instances of experimentation on brazilian TV fiction with the introduction of technologic platforms which enabled the broadcast of content to other screens. To reach that objective, this paper investigates the extended scenes published as exclusive content at Rede Globo\'s telenovela Passione website, available from May 2010 through January 2011. These scenes represented an essay of language creation that opens significant questioning in the field of production language in an age marked by changes in the role of the broadcaster, changes on the receiver end of the spectrum and in communication methods. With this objective, this study proposes to review these telenovela scenes produced exclusively to the website, expanding the story from the television to the internet. Following distinct visions, it indicates possible discussions about the complex language and artistic expression and, in this way, the study proposes to examine the same object through a series of epistemological lenses. The theoretical structure of this essay has, therefore, a role of revision, exposing proposals of review models in a historic moment in which the existing ones can no longer explain the complexity of communications. One hypothesis that we bring to light is that the concept of authorship finds itself amplified by interactivity, by collaborative and interactive systems and by fan creation; which leads to the point of production to research and experiment different creative possibilities. As a methodological procedure, we use the study of subject of extended scenes from telenovela Passione and, in the same time, consider the language of other creations to multiple platforms, doing a qualitative and documental approach. In that way, the methodological process unfolded in a simultaneous and complementary manner: (a) following up the telenovela by analogic and digital television; (b) following up the website before, during and after the presentation of the telenovela with personal interactivity; (c) following up other platforms; (d) following up the extended scenes. The research body is comprised of 211 extended scenes of Passione that were available on its website in the \'personagens\' tab in July 2011. Those of which were organized and transcripted for analysis. In the role of confidant and with great expectations to interact, the spectator, looking through the theoretical and methodological lenses of our research, transforms into an ex-pectador. The ex-pectador is the one who is in ring.

Recent astronomical observations (involving supernovae type Ia, cosmic background radiation anisotropy and galaxy clusters probes) have provided strong evidence that the observed universe is described by an accelerating, flat model whose space-time properties can be represented by the FriedmannRobertsonWalker (FRW) metric. However, the nature of the substance or mechanism behind the current cosmic acceleration remains unknown and its determination constitutes a challenging problem for modern cosmology. In the general relativistic description, an accelerat ing regime is usually obtained by assuming the existence of an exotic energy component endowed with negative pressure, called dark energy, which is usually represented by a cosmological constant ? associated to the vacuum energy density. All observational data available so far are in good agreement with the concordance cosmic ?CDM model. Nevertheless, such models are plagued with several problems thereby inspiring many authors to propose alternative candidates in the relativistic context. In this thesis, a new kind of accelerating flat model with no dark energy and fully dominated by cold dark matter (CDM) is proposed. The number of CDM particles is not conserved and the present accelerating stage is a consequence of the negative pressure describing the irreversible process of gravitational particle creation. In order to have a transition from a decelerating to an accelerating regime at low redshifts, the matter creation rate proposed here depends on 2 parameters (y and ??): the first one identifies a constant term of the order of H0 and the second one describes a time variation proportional to he Hubble parameter H(t). In this scenario, H0 does not need to be small in order to solve the age problem and the transition happens even if there is no matter creation during the radiation and part of the matter dominated phase (when the ? term is negligible). Like in flat ACDM scenarios, the dimming of distant type Ia supernovae can be fitted with just one free parameter, and the coincidence problem plaguing the models driven by the cosmological constant. ACDM is absent. The limits endowed with with the existence of the quasar APM 08279+5255, located at z = 3:91 and with an estimated ages between 2 and 3 Gyr are also investigated. In the simplest case (? = 0), the model is compatible with the existence of the quasar for y > 0:56 whether the age of the quasar is 2.0 Gyr. For 3 Gyr the limit derived is y > 0:72. New limits for the formation redshift of the quasar are also established

The purpose of this Master s thesis is to study the social media s discourses regarding the fat body, especially those circulating in blogs associated with the plus size universe. Inserted in the field of communication and following the processes of creation in media and culture line of research, this study focuses on mapping out and conducting a critical analysis of the processes of creating and building a body image that questions and subverts the hegemonic representations and discourses. Nowadays, the body is a frequent object of discussion in the media. Two types of discourses prevail: in the mass media, the discourse takes on an imperative note, preaching the importance of having a perfect body. In the digital media, however, it is possible to notice the emergence of a counter discourse that defends other types of bodies, which escape the rules that govern the ideal body . This Master s thesis aims to map out the multiplicity of images and discourses emerging in the cyberspace. The concept of cyberspace adopted was the one defined by Leão: a gigantic, almost endless maze of interactions typical of contemporary times, a network composed of hardware, software, people and groups. The research focuses on the following topics of discussion: daily life, body acceptance, fashion, health, self-esteem, prejudice, and respect. The theoretical frameworks adopted were: process analysis and criticism theories (Salles and Leão); body, image and power (Foucault); social networks (Costa); communication devices (Prado); body images (Sant Anna, Ortega and Vigarello). The methodology consisted of literature review; identification, selection and analysis of documents published in the social networks included in the study; image research (iconology) associated with art projects related to the concept of obese bodies; and mapping of images and imaginary as a method of knowledge production (Leão). Grounded in the idea of image, talk spaces and power (Foucault), the research shows the importance of building an imaginary. Through the analysis of documents published in these networks (photographs, records of discussions, among others), it was possible to map out the complexities of the issues involving the authors and groups in the plus size universe. Among the findings, the mapping of images and discourses conducted in this research shows that the creation of an alternative, subversive and politically engaged imaginary is essential to promote the freedom of expression and communication regarding the body that does not conform to established standards

Abstract:
A lot of people like gambling. Even though it brings excitement, it has its dark sides as well. Problem gambling is a disease that destroys lives every day. As gambling are entering the digital domain, phenomenon such as E-sport has made it easier than ever to gamble. Therefore it is important to minimize the risk of gambling addiction among the users. At present time, as an attempt to make this possible, legislators have started to implement different rules on how companies need to deal with responsible gambling. A trend, that has become a problem, is that gamblers tend to not read warning messages that they get when they have been playing for a long period of time. This thesis is about producing recommendations for how to design these modal windows so that users actually take the time to read the information they receive. The methods used in this thesis are connected to the 6 phases of the design thinking process produced by Nielsen Norman Group and they were literature studies, interviews, prototyping and user testing. It was found that people with a previous gambling addiction wanted to see information about how much money they had spent in total on their account. That could also show more clearly how serious one's playing habits are. One cannot stop everyone from developing a gambling addiction, but one can give everyone a chance to become healthy.

Full text
Abstract:

Adam Rapp's Red Light Winter, produced by the University Players at California State University, Long Beach is a play that explores the difference between memory, nostalgia, and reality. The creation of an effective scenic design involves zeroing in on the central meaning of the piece and formulating through metaphoric and poetic associations a stage design that effectively communicates these associations and meanings to the audience. Red Light Winter is ultimately about how people struggle to reconcile their memories, the reality of the present, and strong feelings of nostalgia and how these three things can become intertwined, sometimes to disastrous effect. This visual and poetic association allows for the creation of a room space on stage that forces the audience to look metaphorically through the walls of the room into a confined and claustrophobic memory space. The creation of this room by definition also creates a space outside this room. Just as the audience is peering through the walls of the room and into the memories of the characters, all three characters at some point must see beyond their own memories and catch a glimpse of the harsh reality - the "outside" - of their lives.

Abstract:
Reconciliation of human plurality, with the commonality requisite for egalitarian political order, is arguably the central question confronting political thought today. The thesis is a response to Hannah Arendt’s insight that in the wake of the twentieth-century demise of metaphysical ultimates, we must affirm human capacity for autonomous judgment as fundamental to sustaining a world ‘fit for human habitation’. It consists of a theory of autonomy (or practical reason) designed to fully address pluralism, historicism and the critique of identity/difference. In the light of Onora O’Neill’s constructivist reading of Kantian reason, autonomy as ‘creative action’ is defended as the minimal human commonality which must be presupposed, to account for trans-cultural justice grounded in communication rather than coercion. The account of autonomy employs Kant’s notion of the ‘unconditioned’: freedom from determinate causes; that which is common to all by virtue of being particular to none. Kant’s merely formal concept is reconceived as a substantive experience within the world: the momentary suspension of existing cultural forms, identified as both a formal and substantive prerequisite to overcoming prejudices, and the achievement of trans-cultural communication. Building on Hans-George Gadamer’s tradition-dependent notion of hermeneutic judgment, creative action consists of first ‘receptive attention’, the suspension of existing understandings, pre-conceptions etc., and open receptivity to what is there, and second, ‘responsive judgment’, revitalisation of authoritative standards internal to a ‘vital sphere of practice’ – a realm of human activity whose authoritative standards are constituted through creative action. Creative action is defended as a minimal, generic prerequisite for the realisation of any transcendent value (such as truth, justice and beauty) within a vital sphere of practice. This ideal of autonomy coheres with a pluralist ideal of society as a web of equal, autonomous yet interdependent vital spheres of practice. A distinctive feature of the thesis is that it provides, in addition to a maximally-capacious account of autonomy, a radically pluralist ontological and epistemic framework. Contemporary political thought embracing human plurality and difference has for the most part been wary of metaphysical ultimates, opting for epistemic abstinence and avoiding explicit metaphysical commitments. I argue, however, that a substantive, philosophical account of the possibility of trans-cultural justice requires admission of that which transcends the culturally-conditioned, as well as adherence to some notion of philosophical truth. As western thought has inherited from Platonism and the Judeo-Christian tradition a view of truth as monological, universal and unchanging, radical, pluralist revisions are required. Within the proposed two-tiered epistemology, creative action takes the place of reason. This epistemic framework retains the transcendent content of truth, while fully acknowledging the cultural-relativity of particular socio-cultural forms. It allows the theory to stand as a substantive, philosophically-vindicated theory of autonomy, but without rendering it vulnerable to post-structuralist charges of cultural-imperialism. The thesis shows that the universalist, egalitarian commitments of the Kantian tradition can be reconciled with strong commitment to difference and diversity, but only if the philosophical and political realms abdicate their traditional positions of privilege vis a vis other spheres of practice.

Abstract:
What drives creation in art? What differs in this between artists, and more specifically? What comes from letting that creativity flow out, unhampered yet guided? What are the influences that inspiration plays in creation? These questions are what I want to explore for myself visually, creating compositions that are continually inventive. I explored these questions through a process driven by as pure an inspiration as I could obtain using the medium that is the most natural - and thus the smallest impediment to my thought process - and adding cohesiveness at the end to create a full, technical, interesting, and thought provoking composition. I think in ink, so to speak, and I used this quality to help me just draw; each piece evolved from one stroke to the next, growing and building with the simple joy of drawing guided by subconscious and experiential cues. As the drawings neared their completion, much more consideration was taken in order to form the complete gestalts. In the end, 3 completely unique character interactions took form, whose detail and oddity allow the viewer to explore the depths of my mind and make inferences of their own creation upon them.

Abstract:
Abstract In this work the concept of play and how it may be applied to digital games and how to introduce a fictional universe and the rules that define that universe is being investigated. The purpose of this work is to increase the quality of digital games by increasing our understanding of how such rules may be introduced. The question to be answered is “how may realistic, semi-realistic and fictional rules be introduced in a digital game?”. This work is based partly on analyses on why some introductions of rules are often accepted and some often not, partly on evaluation of a product created by us and partly on earlier research. This work is split into two parts; one research part and one production part. To answer the question research about what is previously known has been conducted and a digital game has been produced where the main rule that separates the fictional universe from ours is paranormal activity, or ghosts. After a brief introduction to the main results of Recursion Theory, we present the notion of Partial Applicative Structures (PAS). We follow that with a brief discussion of the axioms of Intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory (IZF). We follow this with a detailed discussion of the Realizability Universe, the P -valued model when P is derived from Kleene's PAS. Using the model above, we shall establish some independence and consistency results. The main result of the essay is to show that Strong Church's Thesis is consistent with IZF relative to IZF.

In this contribution, we have constructed new analytical solutions for initial data of the Einstein equations. Such solutions are valuable for gaining a better understanding of problems involving strong gravitational and/or electromagnetic interactions in general relativity. In this process, we have examined an inhomogeneous cosmological model consisting a lattice of regularly arranged, charged black holes with initial data corresponding to the maximum expansion of a cosmological solution. We have also refined the method in such a way that the values of the mass and charge of the sources can be prescribed beforehand subject to certain constraints dictated by the field equations.

Abstract:
I take inspiration from ordinary objects and materials. Through photography, I attempt to transcend the familiar to discover complexity within the bits and pieces of my everyday life. Like other artistic representations, a photograph is a singular portrayal, not an actualization of physical reality. My artistic exploration of this involves incorporating elements of abstraction to point to the truth that all photographs are, by nature, an abstraction of our physical reality based on perspective. The resulting images often share a quality of impermanence, counterbalanced by the act of making a photographic document. By evoking this temporal quality of photography and abstracting familiar materials and surfaces, I aim to create a playful tension in my imagery.

Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the structure of social marketing within a collaboration between non-profit organisations (NPOs) and business organisations as well as whether this collaboration facilitates the process of social marketing for the NPOs. For this purpose, Austin and Seitanidi´s (2012a, 2012b, 2014) Collaborative Value Creation (CVC) framework was applied to social marketing as value outcome by combining it with Andreasen and Kotler´s (2003) model of the social marketing process in NPOs. Method: A qualitative study was conducted based on secondary and primary data. Hereby, primary data was gathered from a total of seven NPOs and twelve respondents across Sweden by the use of face-to-face and phone interviews. Result & Conclusions: Two main findings were identified in this study. Firstly, within the process of social marketing in a corporate-NPO collaboration the NPOs predominantly plan and design the campaigns independently. Hereby, it is shown that the NPO´s organisational model of operation influences the collaboration structure. Secondly, it is demonstrated that the corporate-NPO collaboration facilitates the NPOs social marketing process. Suggestions for future research: Further investigations of NPOs could be undertaken by distinguishing between their organisational model and area of operation in order to complement the presented theoretical model of the social marketing process in the corporate-NPO collaboration. Additionally, the perspective of business organisations could be considered. Contribution of the thesis: The present study contributes to literature by providing a theoretical model based of the social marketing process in the corporate-NPO collaboration. It demonstrates that this collaboration facilitates the social marketing process of the NPOs.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of a sequence of five scripts for a television series that seeks to articulate the history of mathematics through key events and figures. Programme One examines the idea of zero, while Programme Two looks at how much of geometry was developed by mathematicians who examined the stars and led on to Einstein's work on relativity. Programme Three explores the history of codes and Programme Four complements this by examining how understanding triangles in different contexts was used to solve contemporary problems. Finally, Programme Five looks at an area of mathematics that many people find counter-intuitive, the measurement of chance events. Behind the series lies the desire both to entertain and educate the audience, but also to demonstrate how the art of the documentary can be applied to science topics in a dramatic and imaginative way. The question of the documentary and its nature is discussed in the initial critical chapters that chart the development of the programmes and discuss the creative and technical issues they raise, together with a reflection on the learning process involved in their writing.

We create fictions--personal and literary--to cope with fear, and it is our choice whether or not these inventions affirm life. This collection presents many ways of "making excuses for the universe," both from a personal standpoint and also by using the voices and visions of created characters. The collection contains a section of family poems and three sets of character poems: Beverly and Nanci, Strange Mary, and Blue Donna. Following each section are two related poems for transition or amplification. The poems show a progressive change in writing techniques, especially experimentation with sound, as well as pursuing the central theme that perception is a desirable goal, well worth the price.

Abstract:
The Elegant Universe: Stories is a story collection featuring female characters unflinching in their self-appraisal, and wry in their humor, who explore the realities of their heterosexual relationships, particularly the weighty decision whether to have children or not in these dark and terrifying times. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, the stories collected here explore the various, subtle modes of threat that are the palpable part of the experience of being a woman—not in society, or in the workplace, but primarily inside relationships with men. At the same time, the stories own that love can grow between men and women despite the near and present poison of misogyny. They own the miracle of motherhood while depicting the palpable fragility of new life and the proximity of mothers to unstoppable wreckage and ruin.

Doyle, Alexandra. "Developing a Choreographic Process: Instinctual Creation vs. Premeditated Creation." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/579302.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a research project undertaken in order to develop a personal process of choreography. As a dance major at a university with a heavy emphasis on choreography, I feel it is important to identify and develop my own choreographic process. I am trying to find my own voice as a choreographer, so I am testing different recognized methods of movement creation in order to develop a process. Each semester, fall and spring, I choreographed separate pieces that were driven by a different process. Fall semester I choreographed driven by instinctual creation; spring semester I choreographed driven by premeditated creation. Throughout each process, I kept detailed journals on what choreographic tools and techniques I used to develop each piece. The largest products of my research were the two dances created, so the bulk of my thesis is videos of my dances. However, I wanted to document the processes to learn which techniques worked and which didn't. To close out my time here at the university, I will choreograph a solo using the information gathered from my research.

Abstract:
Scholars argue that knowledge is a fundamental source for retaining competitive advantage, as value creation depends fundamentally on the competence of a firm to create new knowledge (Nonaka and Toyama, 2002). Knowledge creation is based on conversion of two types of knowledge: tacit knowledge, which is constituent to the comprehensiveness of an individual’s consciousness, and explicit knowledge, which can be readily communicated. Based on the framework by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995), one of the most significant and cited models, the motivation of this research is to expand knowledge creation model from intra- to inter-organizational relationships theoretically and explore supply chain knowledge creation process in practice to examine the sequences of this extension. Studying three firms in the fashion industry, this thesis contributes to research on knowledge creation by taking a socio-technological perspective through a qualitative study of supply chain management. The research findings provide support for the proposed theoretical model in which social relationships and technology interact in the knowledge creation process to diminish supply chain complexities. While many supply chain relationships I observed appear to be influential in creating knowledge, one similarity among the cases here is that the effectiveness of the knowledge creation process has been limited due to the lack of harmony in employing knowledge resources. Knowledge creation process may be superficial due to the fact that they require a large revolution in work routines regarding the use of technology. Even where there is some degree of socialization, the process is partial because of incongruities between individuals understanding and corporate supply chain strategies.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on a related set of nine papers I published between 2004 and 2010. Six of these papers are sole authored and I was the lead author for the three joint authored papers. Four underlying themes are identified which underpin the research I have done. Firstly, market entry through the dot com model which was covered in my first published paper (Laffey, 2004). This paper identified my second research theme, network effects in entrepreneurial markets, covered in Laffey (2005.; 2007b) which examined gambling markets and my third theme, the importance of search and paid click concepts, analysed in Laffey (2007a), Laffey and Sharp (2008) and Laffey et al (2009). My third theme of search then led naturalIy to my final theme, the development of online value creation concepts, which was explored through research into comparison websites (Laffey, 2009c, 2010; Laffey and Gandy, 2009b). The thesis shows how these research themes emerged through the selected papers, how they have developed into my current research and how they offer opportunities for further research. Page

Abstract:
Wetlands in the United States have been decreasing in number from the time European settlers began draining them for agricultural purposes to the present. Wetlands serve many important ecological functions such as waterfowl habitat. The purpose of this project was to investigate wetland creation literature in order to develop a process which could be applied to a particular site to attract waterfowl. The topics reviewed for this project were goal setting, for wetland creations, wetland creation methodologies and waterfowl habitat criteria. The major portion of the project was devoted to the construction process of the wetland. The criteria used to direct the wetland construction were hydrology, topographic contour design, revegetation, and protective buffers. Trail development to provide public access for educational purposes was also an important component of the wetland design. Waterfowl habitat criteria was also researched and applied to the project in order it insure that waterfowl would be attracted to the wetland. The process developed from the research was applied to Jim Haberek's property located in Anderson, Indiana. The product was a masterplan which included a site analysis, a water level management plan, a contour design, a revegetation plan, protective buffers and a trail design for the public.
