Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to identify the impact of recent organizational change upon the culture of firefighting. The experiences of female firefighters were utilized as a measure of cultural change. A purposive sample of twenty-seven male and female firefighters were interviewed in a semi-structured format about their experiences in the fire service. This research found that the culture of firefighting has adjusted to the presence of previously excluded groups by forging a division among the identities and roles of male and female firefighters. The white, male firefighters, who have traditionally constituted a majority of the workforce, have continued to identify with traditional firefighter roles and reported high levels of cohesion. In contrast, the female firefighters showed a greater variance in their identification with traditional roles and decreased levels of cohesion with the main body of the group.

Abstract:
Através das notas de diário de bordo e visualização da documentação de arquivo vídeogravado, de encontros e ensaios recolhidos ao longo de todo o processo foi possível concluir que, ao desenvolver a flexibilidade presente nesta relação de permanente negociação, se acedeu a uma mais profunda visão da encenadora e cocriadora, traduzindo-se em ganhos significativos, do ponto de vista dramatúrgico e de produção de sentidos múltiplos, que ambos tínhamos traçado; Abstract: Possibilities and limits, the actors/creator potential in the inherent process of a collective creation This report presents a reflection on the work done as a creative actor, in the process of collective creation of the show “Ensaio para o Fim”, in a constant dialogue and creative interpellation with the director. It was intended to understand how the actor’s tecnhique and artistic tools, liberate or condition him and how, starting from a collective creation to the construction of na original work, and after structured it, actor and director redefine their fucntions in a way that the representation of the work contains the interpretations of both director and actor. The following questions were asked: How does the actor break free from the creator’s vision? How do we stop being “emitter”, to become “message”? Malone, Joanne. "Creative teaching methodologies for hospitality management education." Thesis, Queen's University Belfast, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.602396.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the role of creative teaching methods in hospitality management education. It examines how hospitality lecturers and students perceive the role of creativity in a selection of higher education institutions in the Republic of Ireland. It also reports on the current level of creative leaching practices within the hospitality discipline in these institutions and how effective they are within the disciplinary and institutional contexts in which they occur. A mixed methods approach was used to gather the views of lecturers and students concerning creativity and its role in higher education within the hospitality discipline. The research adopted three traditional data collection methods: survey questionnaires, interviews and focus groups. The data from the student and lecturer surveys were combined with data from interviews and focus groups to provide an indication of the current levels of creativity in teaching methods. On the whole, the hospitality lecturers and students in the study supported the use of creative teaching methods to enhance hospitality education. This position is consistent with current literature in the field. A range of factors and conditions were identified by the research as enabling or inhibiting the adoption of creative teaching methods in hospitality management education. These included challenging working conditions and a lack of available resources. Additionally, this research was used to identify what the respondents perceived as missing from hospitality education and how teaching and learning could be improved. The results suggest that questions need to be asked about the structure of many hospitality management programmes. The consensus among lecturers and students was the need for a more practically orientated curriculum and increased opportunities for structured work placements. In summary the results of this study add to our understanding of how hospitality lecturers and students perceive the role of creativity in higher education. They also indicate the current level of creative teaching practices within the hospitality discipline and how effective they are within the disciplinary and institutional contexts in which they are practised.

Stone, Adam H. "Applying systems engineering methodologies to the creative process." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/44007.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
The application of systems engineering methodologies to the creative process provides opportunities to improve the creative capabilities of individuals and organizations. Through creativity and systems engineering research, the creative process is equated to the systems engineering process. This allows creativity itself to be defined as a system. Defining creativity as a system permits the analysis of the creative process and the construction of a systems engineering based process model for creativity. Process based creativity theories are decomposed and reformulated into a process flow that acknowledges the iterative and recursive nature of the creative process. The derived process flow is then integrated with systems engineering process elements to construct a process model for creativity. The production of a systems engineering derived process model for creativity allows future opportunities to improve that process model by incorporating new creativity research and/or additional influences on creativity, increasing the fidelity of the model. The proposed process model also invites future research into the efficacy of the model. Through the use of systems engineering, creativity research may be incorporated and refined to build an evolving process model for creativity.

Azares, Andre. "Creating a Comparative Map of Relative Power for DC ARC Flash Methodologies." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2016. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1684.

Full text
Abstract:
Although arc flash has been a concern amongst the electrical industry for many years, it is only relatively recently that standards by the IEEE have been established on calculating the amount of energy behind an arc flash event. However, these standards only apply to AC systems, where extensive testing and research have been performed. Although the NFPA has provided recommendations on how to calculate the incident energy for DC arc flash events, these have not become the defining standard like those seen for AC. One equation outlined in the NFPA70E, the Maximum Power Method, does provide engineers with a formula to calculate DC arc flash incident energy but as the NFPA states this can be quite conservative. However, the NFPA70E also mentions a Detailed Arcing Current and Energy Calculations Method which contains formulas proposed by various researchers who conducted their own DC arc flash testing but there is scarce info on how these methods compare to the Maximum Power Method. This paper will investigate the relative power of two of the formulas proposed in the alternate method, the results from Stokes/Oppenlander and the results from Paukert, over a variety of parameters that affect DC arcing power. These will then be compared to relative power of the Maximum Power Method, as well as the relative power of the AC equations formed from measurements. Although the results in this paper are not aiming to be a defining standard, the aim is to provide engineers with information on when one methodology is more suitable to use for a given set of certain parameters.

Abstract:
This document will account the process, from research and analysis through post-production reflection, of directing and choreographing Crazy For You in the mainstage academic season of Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Theater Department in the Fall of 2010. Further, this paper highlights the more prominent aspects in order to continue the author's work to deconstruct and define the musical theatre genre. Chapter One focuses on two major aspects of current perceptions of musical theatre in an effort to address the genre's efficacy. The chapter first examines how musical theatre is defined and critiqued by the outsider and sometimes inadequately handled by the practitioner. Next, the development of the genre is examined as it pertains to the genesis of Crazy For You, both book and music, as well as contemporary relevance. The second chapter opens with a statement of specific objectives for this production process along with a discussion of vision and concept. The latter half examines the most relevant research employed early in the process. Chapter Three details issues from design and production meetings through rehearsals and performances while the final chapter reflects upon the effectiveness of the aforementioned tactics and objectives. The Appendices include additional documents pertinent to the overall discussion.

As part of its strategic initiatives, ABB inaugurated a 100,000 sq-m campus for an Engineering, Sourcing, and Manufacturing Operations center in San Luis Potosi (SLP), Mexico in May 2008. The ramp-up of the SLP site encompassed two focus areas that are the topics for this thesis. The first area of focus was to create a business development guide that supports Mexican and North American division managers, plant managers, and their supporting personnel to successfully establish new business in SLP. Having such a guide available is expected to reduce start-up time of operations, increase decision-making speed, improve productivity in multi-divisional projects, and ultimately increase potential internal business opportunities. This thesis presents a case study on how this guide was designed, developed, and implemented. The second focus area was to implement several Lean principles, the most significant one being "5S." A case study on its planned application, procedure to measure implementation level and effectiveness on quality, productivity, and on-time delivery is discussed. A discussion on the stronger emphasis by management on implementation measurement versus effectiveness measurement and possible reasons for this gap of expectations is also presented. Finally, the production area for the Robot Refurbishment line was redesigned based on the target of reducing factory floor space for use in other ventures, meanwhile simultaneously increasing lead times in the manufacturing process.

Issa, Tomayess Boutros. "Development and evaluation of a methodology for developing websites." Curtin University of Technology, School of Information Systems, 2007. http://espace.library.curtin.edu.au:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=17908.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focuses on the development of a new methodology for creating effective websites, especially those used for marketing. It was found that existing methodologies were missing some key stages - user participation and “real interaction” (i.e. monitoring of user interaction with a prototype site). This has led to users being frustrated and lacking loyalty to the website. There is great potential for combining aspects of methodologies from different disciplines; however, these need to be integrated in a coherent way. To address these problems, a new integrated methodology was developed in this research. The new methodology was created from basic concepts derived from: lifecycle models; Information Systems development methodologies; methodologies with explicit human factors aspects; websites methodologies; marketing methodologies; and additional techniques such as task analysis and detailed website design and implementation. After studying the lifecycle model, the researcher identified four key principles, which were the foundation of the research: user participation; iteration; usability and “real interaction”. The way in which these four principles were incorporated in each methodology was evaluated in order to choose the strongest stages to utilize in the new combined methodology. After reviewing techniques for methodology integration, a new draft methodology was produced. To assess the new methodology, two research phases were used - interviews and a questionnaire. In the former phase, the researcher interviewed representatives from nine website development companies in Western Australia to discuss their current methodologies and compared these with the new methodology.
Most of the industry participants were pleased with the structure of the new methodology, as most agreed that it incorporates the necessary requirements to develop a successful website. The interviews generated some recommendations for revisions to the methodology, which assisted the researcher to improve the new methodology. In the latter phase, an online questionnaire was completed by a total of website industry participant andInformation Systems Professionals, in order to assess the revised methodology. Results from the interviews and questionnaire supported the research hypothesis – i.e. that the new integrated methodology can provide a more effective way of developing websites, utilizing the four key principles. This thesis points to the need for further research, including the development of a website describing the new methodology. This website will incorporate a software tool to facilitate selection of particular stages, steps and techniques from theintegrated methodology to produce a tailored methodology for any specific project, thereby implementing the concept of “contingency”.

Canlas, Joel. "Creating software libraries to improve medical device testing of the Pacing System Analyzer (PSA) at St. Jude Medical." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2011. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/599.

Full text
Abstract:
Software testing, specifically in the medical device field, has become increasingly complex over the last decade. Technological enhancements to simulate clinical scenarios and advancements in communicating to medical devices have created the need for better testing strategies and methodologies. Typical medical device companies have depended on manual testing processes to fulfill Food and Drug Administration (FDA) submission requirements specifically Class III devices which are life supporting, life sustaining devices. At St. Jude Medical, software testing of Class III devices such as implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), pacemakers, and pacing analyzers are given top priority to ensure the highest quality in each product. High emphasis is made on improving software testing for ease of use and for catching more software errors in each device. A significant stride in testing has automated the process and has provided software verification teams with the tools they need to successfully test and deliver high quality products. By creating software libraries which interact with communication to the other interfaces needed to test medical devices, test engineers can focus on fully testing device requirements and will not be concerned with how each test will interact with the device or any other testing tools. The main focus will be a specific St. Jude Medical device known as the Pacing System Analyzer (PSA). The PSA device will be used to demonstrate how verification engineers are able to benefit from software libraries and allow the testing process and test development to be fully automated. New technologies and standards will be created to simulate clinical scenarios and to communicate to new devices. The goal is to use software engineering principles to create standard test libraries which sustain these changes while still allowing testers to focus on finding issues for each device.

Abstract:
The first part of the thesis investigates the narrative shifts in the work of Luis Alberto de Abreu, in elements of his plays and in his film scripts and the implications of the processes in the dynamics of the collective creation. Departing from his idea of restoration of the epic narrative and with oral characteristics of the theater, this part of the thesis analyzes the narrativity as the creator of images upon the narrator, in the \"full picture\" of the scripts and upon the newest configuration of a narrator in process, distant from the configuration of the character as an individual. Aiming at offering a theoretical and practical field of discussion to the questions of narrativity and the creative relationships between actors and playwright in a process of collective dynamics of theatrical creation, the second part of the thesis deals with the realization of a creative laboratory between playwright and actors. In this, four propositional axis for dramaturgical creation were developed according to the starting point and different procedures: the law of the material, the territory of creation of the actors, the compositions of the playwright and dramaturgical (counter) devices. Finally, in the light of the laboratory experiments, an idea of cartography begins to set up that has mainly playwright who drafts and outlines maps, bringing together his creative action of the primordial gesture of the narrator.

Full text
Abstract:
Novice solution-focused brief therapists often have difficulty delivering scaling questions within the languaging of their clients. To help beginning Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) trainees, this researcher has created the metaphorically enhanced scaling question (MESQ) training program. By incorporating a meaning making system such as the metaphor, the scaling question becomes expressive and symbolic to the client and his or her own story. The MESQ objective is to assist novice therapists in facilitating the SFBT scaling question creatively through the use of metaphor. A metaphor is a created meaning isomorphic to its original meaning or experience. The metaphor will be co-constructed through collaboration between client and therapist. The MESQ program encompasses three key elements of SFBT: listening, selecting, and building into three tangible activities designed for novice therapists to learn, articulate, and demonstrate their comprehension of the modified scaling technique (Bavelas, De Jong, Franklin, Froerer, Gingerich, Kim, Korman, Langer, Lee, McCullum, Jordan, & Trepper, 2013) This research is qualitative in nature, due to the examined experiences of the MESQ training program participants. Action research has been chosen to emphasize the learning aspect, and assist in training development. The MESQ training program will be evaluated based on Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluating training programs: reaction, learning, behavior, and results. (Kirkpatrick, 1996). The focus of this research project will be to refine and develop the MESQ training program through analytic evaluation.

Abstract:
Agile principles for software development are now the industry standard for innovative projects. Agile is often hailed for being flexible, but there is also a commonly held 'truth' that agile principles and software security do not work well together. For this reason it is not uncommon to place all security responsibilities with a separate team, which goes against the agile principles of being team-centered and may affect flexibility or timeframe of a project. Additionally, software security is difficult and requires extensive experience and knowledge, something that varies a lot among software developers. This study presents a threat modeling process tailored for the specific needs and capabilities of the agile developer team. The process combines features of attack trees and abuser stories with other supplementary techniques in a pedagogical instruction manual to create an accessible and easy-to-get-started method intended to be driven by the developers themselves. The process has been developed through extensive review of extant threat modeling methods and the circumstances of the agile team, and trialed through user tests at an agile ITorganization in the financial services.

Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018BOR30050/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis aims at analysing the place within the city of everyday security actors in Nairobi, Kenya. I call them “veilleurs” (sentinels of the city), playing on the double meaning of the word in French : referring both to their professional activity (watching over the city) and their feeling of living a passive life (watching all day long can be considered as a non-action). The study focuses on two groups in particular : private security guards at the gate of residential compounds in the planned city, and youthgroups members in slum areas. Adopting an individual and everyday-centred approach, this work fits in with the recent renewal of security studies. For the last ten years, those have been advocating a closer attention to “micro” effects produced by security assemblages, especially on subjectivities, affects, bodies, and everyday routines. The city of Nairobi displays a double feature that sheds new light on the sensitive question of the veilleurs. First, its urban fragmentation appears as particularly iconic in terms of imaginaries. Second, Nairobi can be qualified as an “anxious city” in light of the recent political violence (2007-2008) and the emerging terrorist threat. This study is based on both an ethnographic approach and a creative methodology using poetry as a way to free the speech of my interlocutors. It seeks to analyse the place of the veilleurs through three layered readings: their ambiguous political condition (being “on the line” between familiarity and otherness: neither inside nor outside the community they are supposed to watch over), the uncertain everyday life resulting from this condition, and the diverse imaginaries they produce to make sense of it. These three layers allow me to develop both a spatial and social reading of the key concepts of abandonment, lives on hold, and complex place to better understand this particular category of urban workers

Abstract:
The popularization of academic spaces that combine Buddhist philosophy with the literature of the Romantic period – a discipline I refer to as Buddhist Romantic Studies – have exposed the lack of scholarly attention Samuel Taylor Coleridge and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner have received within such studies. Validating Coleridge’s right to exist within Buddhist Romantic spheres, my thesis argues that Coleridge was cognizant of Buddhism through historical and textual encounters. To create a space for The Rime within Buddhist Romantic Studies, my thesis provides an interpretation of the poem that centers on the concept of prajna, or wisdom, as a vital tool for cultivating the mind. Focusing on prajna, I argue that the Mariner’s didactic story traces his cognitive voyage from ignorance to enlightenment. By examining The Rime within the framework of Buddhism, readers will also be able to grasp the importance of cultivating the mind and transcending ignorance.

The rapidity with which science evolves every day makes it almost impossible for society to be well informed about the latest scientific advances. This makes it difficult for decision-making and the public engagement in science. This thesis analyzes the communication that is being carried out on a relevant scientific advance in materials science: graphene, a two-dimensional material isolated for the first time in 2004, which has unique and exceptional properties. Besides that, a new communication channel for graphene is proposed through the application of participatory design methodologies in cooperative workshops with experts, non-experts, and high school students. The results reveal that the information transmitted in the press has a markedly positive tone; that electronics is the sector of greatest interest for the application of graphene, and that research and funding are the most commented topics, among others. On the other hand, participatory design methodologies have proven to be useful for connecting graphene with different industry sectors, with society, and with the educational field. Moreover, they provide other social, cultural, and economic benefits.

Abstract:
Record keeping is not a static way to document history but rather a way for people in the present to engage with, and be affected by, the past. This is especially true in the case of online databases. Databases store information but their use also encourages the adoption of specific methodologies for apprehending reality because it is through those methodological agreements that the information in the database becomes relevant. In the summer of 2012 I spent four months observing and interviewing wheat researchers and database developers at a major agricultural research center in Mexico as part of my M.A. thesis project. This paper argues that people using the International Wheat Information System (IWIS) database at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) are involved in a process that documents wheat pedigree information while also enacting a reality based on assumptions about the value of certain types of human pedigree.

Adéla Rambousková Vedoucí práce: PhDr. Pavla Presslerová, Ph.D. Studijní program: Učitelství pro střední školy (N7504) Studijní obor: N PG-VV (7504T223, 7504T228) ABSTRACT The diploma thesis focuses on the topic of work with emotional well-being of girls with behavioral disorders in the diagnostic institute. The aim was to create three comprehensive methodological lessons, which are aimed at improving the emotional stability of adolescent girls in institutional care. The aspiration was to compile such lessons that respond in terms of content to the current needs of the current clientele of the diagnostic institute and at the same time bring effective results with their structure and nature of activities. Over the course of two years, a questionnaire survey was conducted among the girls, which provided data on which the lesson is thematically based. In combination with theoretical knowledge from the study of developmental psychology, social and special pedagogy, three prototypes of methodological lessons were created, tested in practice, reflected by combination of several feedback methods, redesigned, tested, reflected by the...

Abstract:

Collaboration in art, design and media has traditionally taken place in the studio. Recent experiments in collaboration and interaction have sought to identify the factors that promote productive and creative collaboration and those that do not. It is clear that virtual collaboration mediated by computer networks can include many of the elements that characterise face to face collaboration. This also facilitates international collaboration just as easily as national and local ones. At the same time, digital convergence is producing environments and artefacts that blur the traditional distinctions between art and technology, and which give rise to new creative opportunities and new kinds of creative works. These are described in this paper and their significance is explored. These also cause further reflections on the contributions that science can make to art and vice-versa.

Nichols, Bridget M. Satinover. "Exploring and Explaining Consumer Competition: A Mixed-Methods Approach to Understanding the Phenomenon." 2010. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_graddiss/832.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the phenomenon of “consumer competition.” The overarching objective is to help researchers and marketing practitioners understand how the phenomenon is created, how consumers experience competition, and to begin to inspect its effects. Consumer competition is defined as the active processes of striving against others for the acquisition of a consumption object. To date, this phenomenon has been under-researched, despite its prevalence in many marketing and consumer-related domains. An extensive literature synthesis provides the foundation for understanding competition and competitiveness in general from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Based on the synthesis of literature and respective theory, this research contends that a scarcity effect contributes to consumer competition. It also contends that competitive situations may be purposely created by retailers, who may or may not understand its benefits and/or consequences to the people involved. This dissertation examines the phenomenon in two manners. First, an exploratory study seeks to enrich our understanding of how consumers experience competition in a retail setting. Employing the grounded theory method, researching participants engaged in a competitive shopping context offers insight into the meaning of competition, the motivation for competing, the experiential components of competing, and the outcome of participating in a competitive shopping situation. Second, an experiment tests the influence of scarcity messages on consumers’ perceptions of a competitive purchase situation and the related purchase interest. The results of the research are multi-faceted. It provides managerial insight into an effect of scarcity not yet examined: perceptions regarding the competitive nature of a purchase situation. This is an important distinction given the influence of perceptions on behavior. It also provides insight to enrich our understanding of how consumers engage in competitive shopping behavior and how they reflect on competitive situations in the retail domain.
