Abstract:
This project has presented a web site (splinteronline.net) as a digital forum to explore stories in all its forms.Stories are at the core of human communication. We use stories to educate, enlighten, and entertain and we actively seek out stories from others. This dynamic narrative exchange takes many forms — conversation, journalism, film, television, radio, literature, Internet — and will continue to expand and endure as new ways of presenting stories emerge. My creative project actively participates in this exchange by offering a forum for users to engage and share their stories with others. Like a barrel catching rainwater, the site serves as a kind of digital downspout that funnels stories into various themes like Grace, Anger, Home, Mother, Solitude, Regret, Jazz, Courage, Justice, Work, and Greed. Each theme is then identified by genre — humor, fact, memoir, fiction, editorial, poetry — to allow users to search for their favorites.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with the methods of creating a community website from an initial idea to the steady process of developing the site. Overall, the thesis is divided into a theoretical part and a practical part, where the particular methods are analyzed and applied to the web project Ara.cz. The theoretical part focuses on defining the major reasons of creating the community website and the particular stages of formation and development of the site. The thesis does not deal with the technical aspects of the site, but only with the methods and procedures leading to the creation of a successful community website. Overall, output of the theoretical part is a summary of all methods and procedures including, how to create a community within the website and subsequently how to maintain it and develop it. The practical part of the thesis then deals with how to apply the procedures and methods specifically to the real project Ara.cz. Based on the analysis and market research an appropriate strategy is suggested for the future development of the website. At the end of the thesis are ways of promoting the website and its visibility on the internet, together with methods of monetization of the website which are formulated.

Abstract:
In 2006, the United Church of Canada developed a website, WonderCafe.ca, that provided space for internet users to engage in discussions about religion and spirituality online. This website balanced user freedom to explore any topic of discussion with promoting the United Church to visitors. The website uses Web 2.0 technology, which gives internet users a great amount of freedom to shape the space that they participate in online. Using Kim Knott’s spatial analysis, this thesis explores the types of spaces created by the United Church and WonderCafe users. It also seeks to understand the factors the lead to the creation of WonderCafe, the tensions present on the website over its purpose, how one understands community online, the types of values highlighted within this community, and how internet space differs from offline space.

Shamsian, Negin. "Health informatics in plastic surgery : the creation, development and evaluation of an interactive upper limb surgery website with an anatomical three dimensional visualisation model." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.613421.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The concept of informed consent is one that is not clearly elucidated. Prior to any invasive procedure, surgeons have a legal obligation to inform patients about the procedure. Traditionally, this has involved a discussion with a surgeon , occasionally supplemented by written leaflet information directed at the specific procedure. Objective: The main objective was to create, develop and evaluate an interactive upper limb surgery website with an anatomical three dimensional visualisation model. The purpose of this was to compare the use and effectiveness of an oral consultation alone and an oral consultation with a web-based visualisation package on the rate of information retention in patients undergoing carpal tunnel decompression. Methods: This was a prospective study with 50 participants who underwent a standard oral consultation. Detailed information was given about the indication, the probable complications and the details of the forthcoming carpal tunnel decompression procedure. There was a post consultation questionnaire measuring information retention of the standard risks of carpal tunnel decompression. This was then followed with a visualisation intervention (standardised information supported by an interactive three dimensional hand website and carpal tunnel model). Information retention was measured following the exposure to the multimedia package. The main outcome measure was patient's immediate information retention of the risks of surgery. Results: Patients who had the oral consultation and visualisation had higher information retention of the risks of surgery. Conclusions: Using an interactive computerised hand surgery visualisation model increased the information retention of the patients. The presentation of the visualised information in the Visualisation Group did not require significantly more time than the standard consultation. Discussion: Patients want more information and greater involvement in decisions about their treatment according to The Healthcare Commission Survey results from 2004 - 2010. The results of the survey reveal that patients are being discharged without enough information. Risks, benefits and expected outcomes of treatments still need to be communicated better to patients. Given the substantial increase in recent years of medico-legal claims against surgeons in the United Kingdom with Plastic Surgery traditionally one of the most vulnerable, computerised visualisation may provide a means of improving the consent process thereby decreasing litigation,

Abstract:
This master thesis suggests a new design methodology used for creating web pages, with an emphasis on User Experience (UX). The thesis does not focus on specific web technol-ogies, but it rather concentrates on the process of preparation and design of websites. When applying such a process, the websites will not only meet clients business objectives, but it will also satisfy users requirements. The theoretical part of this thesis summarizes the information about User Experience De-sign, defining its processes, terms, tools, tasks and roles associated with it. The outline may serve the developer and the client as a guide when realizing a project or creating a demand for one. The main aim of the practical part is to introduce a new methodology for creating websites focusing mainly on the UX. The methodology is proposed by the author himself, based on his many years of experience in the field, and tested on a real project which is also present-ed in the practical part.

Rathbone, Nicola. "Knowledge transfer in website design : exploring the processes and benefits of design collaboration for non-creative Micros." Thesis, Aston University, 2014. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/24386/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the interaction between Micros (<10 employees) from non-creative sectors and website designers ("Creatives") that occurred when creating a website of a higher order than a basic template site. The research used Straussian Grounded Theory Method with a longitudinal design, in order to identify what knowledge transferred to the Micros during the collaboration, how it transferred, what factors affected the transfer and outcomes of the transfer including behavioural additionality. To identify whether the research could be extended beyond this, five other design areas were also examined, as well as five Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) engaged in website and branding projects. The findings were that, at the start of the design process, many Micros could not articulate their customer knowledge, and had poor marketing and visual language skills, knowledge core to web design, enabling targeted communication to customers through images. Despite these gaps, most Micros still tried to lead the process. To overcome this disjoint, the majority of the designers used a knowledge transfer strategy termed in this thesis as ‘Bi-Modal Knowledge Transfer’, where the Creative was aware of the transfer but the Micro was unaware, both for drawing out customer knowledge from the Micro and for transferring visual language skills to the Micro. Two models were developed to represent this process. Two models were also created to map changes in the knowledge landscapes of customer knowledge and visual language – the Knowledge Placement Model and the Visual Language Scale. The Knowledge Placement model was used to map the placement of customer knowledge within the consciousness, extending the known Automatic-Unconscious -Conscious model, adding two more locations – Peripheral Consciousness and Occasional Consciousness. Peripheral Consciousness is where potential knowledge is held, but not used. Occasional Consciousness is where potential knowledge is held but used only for specific tasks. The Visual Language Scale was created to measure visual language ability from visually responsive, where the participant only responds personally to visual symbols, to visually multi-lingual, where the participant can use visual symbols to communicate with multiple thought-worlds. With successful Bi-Modal Knowledge Transfer, the outcome included not only an effective website but also changes in the knowledge landscape for the Micros and ongoing behavioural changes, especially in marketing. These effects were not seen in the other design projects, and only in two of the SME projects. The key factors for this difference between SMEs and Micros appeared to be an expectation of knowledge by the Creatives and failure by the SMEs to transfer knowledge within the company.

Swallow, David. "Understanding and supporting Web developers : working practices and resources for the creation and evaluation of accessible websites." Thesis, University of York, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20686/.

Abstract:
Web developers have a responsibility to develop websites that are accessible and usable by the broadest range of users, including people with disabilities. Despite numerous initiatives over the last two decades to support, encourage and compel developers to fulfil this responsibility, websites continue to exhibit persistent accessibility problems. This programme of research aimed to better understand the difficulties that developers face and to develop the necessary support for them to successfully integrate accessibility into their existing workflows. The first study systematically reviewed 397 web accessibility evaluation studies published over a 15-year period between 1999 and 2014. This showed a persistent occurrence of accessibility problems that does not appear to be improving. The second study followed a contextual design methodology to investigate the working practices of 13 professional developers. This showed how they are hindered, not by limited awareness or concern, but by a lack of knowledge and practical guidance on how to make websites accessible. To understand the nature of their confusion and uncertainty, the third study interviewed 26 professional developers and attempted to elicit their mental models of web accessibility. Their mental models were found to incorporate some, but not nearly enough, knowledge and awareness of accessibility and were based on a conceptual model that prioritises technical conformance over user experience. These findings were embodied in the design and implementation of an accessibility information resource, called WebAIR. The ease of use and effectiveness of WebAIR in supporting the creation and evaluation of accessible websites was evaluated in a series of four studies with both professional and novice developers under increasingly realistic experimental conditions. The resource was well received by participants in each study and, despite concerns over its viability within organisations that place little value on web accessibility, WebAIR was demonstrated to be a usable, pragmatic accessibility information resource.

Bilgihan, Anil. "The Role of Flow in Creating e-loyalty: The Case of Online Hotel Booking Websites." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5128.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to examine the concept of “online customer experience”, “flow”, and its role in influencing online customers' loyalty to a hotel booking website. To achieve this aim, a model was developed, which proposed that online flow is generated by both hedonic and utilitarian website features. A model was developed based on literature review to measure the relationships between the constructs. To initiate this research, a survey approach was taken. After conducting a pilot study, a marketing company was contacted to distribute the link for the online questionnaire. Five hundred and eleven (511) questionnaires were completed by guests who booked a hotel room online. Participants completed the self-administered online questionnaire by answering questions related to their last hotel booking experience. Study results found that hedonic and utilitarian website features affect the flow experience positively. Results highlight that hedonic website features has a stronger effect on the flow experience compared to utilitarian ones. In addition, the results revealed that hedonic features positively impact brand equity and utilitarian features impact trust towards the hotel booking website. Further, both trust and brand equity have significant and positive relationship with e-loyalty. However, according to study results, flow experience does not have a direct significant effect on e-loyalty. The study findings suggest that consumers who are able to achieve a state of flow while shopping online will perceive higher brand equity and trust. Therefore, their perceptions of the brand are improved. With enhanced levels of trust and brand equity, consumers are more likely to build bonds and stay loyal to the hotel booking website. It is important to note that enhancing the brand equity and trust via hedonic and utilitarian website features is important to increase loyalty because flow experience does not directly influence loyalty. This study contributes to existing research on flow experience in several ways. Firstly, it developed and tested a model with precursors of flow experience in e-commerce by establishing a link between website features and flow experience. Antecedents and consequences of flow experience can help researchers understand when this experience occurs and what to expect from this optimal experience in online environments. Thus, this study makes a contribution to the existing literature by examining the effects of features of the website on flow experience. It is worth noting that in the model, hedonic website features had the largest impact on flow experience. This is particularly an important contribution, considering that precious related research examined variables such as attractiveness, novelty, playfulness, personal innovativeness, content of the website, interactivity, teleperesence and perceived ease of use as the precursors of flow experience, but they have not examined the website characteristics that derives from shopping orientations. Study results can give hotel booking website designers and marketers a better understanding of the online consumer experiences and loyalty.

Abstract:
Many people that would like to contribute at some level towards creating art in public spaces. However little is currently being done to make use of this untapped potential. The difficulties involved with collecting and coordinating dispersed talent often prevents it from being utilized. But now the Internet offers new opportunities to make harnessing latent talent much easier. Successful online platforms (such as Wikipedia and YouTube) demonstrate the potential value that can be derived from volunteers when appropriate systems are in place to utilize their contributions. Jeff Howe refers to this idea of harnessing distributed volunteered effort via the web as ‘crowdsourcing’. Which he explains as “the process by which the power of many can be leveraged to accomplish feats that were once the province of a specialized few” (2008). This thesis aims to investigate how an online platform might harness voluntary contributions in order to produce public art. The design objective for this project is to develop an online platform that allows people to contribute towards creating art in public spaces. My research explores the needs and motivations of potential contributors as well as techniques for harnessing voluntary contribution and coordinating group effort. As understanding human behaviour and user interaction is central to this project I have adopted a user-centered approach to research and development. To better understand the requirements of the proposed online platform user research was initially conducted in the form of focus groups with potential users and then via an in depth case study. In order to tackle the challenge of designing an entire platform the process was divided into distinct elements that could be addressed individually. These elements included the core functionality, the brand identity, the structural design, the interface design, and the visual design. For each element I consider what techniques might help to better harness voluntary contribution. The final result provides an online environment for people to get involved with specific art projects around their city. Projects are presented as separate challenges and users can contribute at many different levels such as sharing designs online, attending events, or simply providing feedback

Abstract:
Although, today, website design still contains many variable design elements which strongly influence its design outcome, like browser usage, platforms, user preferences, window size, connection speed, computer speed, colour support, software support, and font support, the original design idea still plays an important role. Emotion is difficult to measure or evaluate. Designers need to understand its importance and how to measure emotion efficiently in order to undertake the subsequent design stage. Positive emotions are as important as negative ones-positive emotions are critical to learning, curiosity, and creative thought, and today research is turning toward this dimension (Norman, 2004b: 19). To understand users' negative emotions can supply a better solution for design problems. Both users' likes and dislikes are important when exploring the role of emotional design. The fieldwork consisted of two pilot tests (the initial pilot test-I. P. T. and the second pilot test-S. P. T. ), a website impression test (W. I. T. ), and an improved website impression test (I. W. I. T. ). The research methods involved Think-Aloud usability testing, Emotional Probes testing (EPs testing), and questionnaires. In addition, the evaluation method used a coding system and statistics. Triangulation was used in making consistent the process methods and evaluation methods. The research outcomes include a fashion website design reference model, an insurance website design reference model, and the website impression test system. Through conducting the fieldwork, the importance of emotional design can be identified in the website design field. The whole research process and research outcomes supply one solution for researchers and designers to predict users' emotions in design outcomes.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Websites are incorporated in organizations to support their mission and guarantee effective information delivery within an efficient information workflow framework. In this context, content managers have to constantly monitor the business needs and reflect them on the structure, contents and interaction paradigm of the institutional websites. This task is not trivial, nor automated, being difficult to guarantee that these websites are synchronized with the actual business requirements. The overall goal of this work is the conceptualization, development and evaluation of an application able to assist usability experts in the analysis and visualization of interaction patterns of organizational web based systems. It should be able to highlight the most critical website areas, based on the analysis of website structure, contents and interconnections. For this purpose, a conceptual model and architecture has been proposed, as well as a set of visualization methods designed to facilitate that analysis. In order to validate the proposed conceptual models, the architecture, information structures and several visualization methods, a prototype was developed, evaluated and refined. It can be considered as an experimental research platform, capable of integrating and testing specific visualization schemes and visual correlation procedures, and is part of an ongoing research program of University of Aveiro. Specifically, this work introduces a layered architecture that supports simultaneously synchronised multiple views, as well as novel visualization, inspection and interaction mechanisms. The prototype integrates these visualization methods in an application able to capture, compile and analyze the information related to the structure, contents and usage patterns of a website. This work is meant mainly to help usability experts or content managers to organize the informational space of an institutional web site. However, this application is not supposed to directly provide solutions for the usability problems of the site but to offer the means to help its users take decisions based on the interpretation of the usability problems identified and highlighted during the analysis process.

Abstract:
This research focuses on the development of a new methodology for creating effective websites, especially those used for marketing. It was found that existing methodologies were missing some key stages - user participation and “real interaction” (i.e. monitoring of user interaction with a prototype site). This has led to users being frustrated and lacking loyalty to the website. There is great potential for combining aspects of methodologies from different disciplines; however, these need to be integrated in a coherent way. To address these problems, a new integrated methodology was developed in this research. The new methodology was created from basic concepts derived from: lifecycle models; Information Systems development methodologies; methodologies with explicit human factors aspects; websites methodologies; marketing methodologies; and additional techniques such as task analysis and detailed website design and implementation. After studying the lifecycle model, the researcher identified four key principles, which were the foundation of the research: user participation; iteration; usability and “real interaction”. The way in which these four principles were incorporated in each methodology was evaluated in order to choose the strongest stages to utilize in the new combined methodology. After reviewing techniques for methodology integration, a new draft methodology was produced. To assess the new methodology, two research phases were used - interviews and a questionnaire. In the former phase, the researcher interviewed representatives from nine website development companies in Western Australia to discuss their current methodologies and compared these with the new methodology.
Most of the industry participants were pleased with the structure of the new methodology, as most agreed that it incorporates the necessary requirements to develop a successful website. The interviews generated some recommendations for revisions to the methodology, which assisted the researcher to improve the new methodology. In the latter phase, an online questionnaire was completed by a total of website industry participant andInformation Systems Professionals, in order to assess the revised methodology. Results from the interviews and questionnaire supported the research hypothesis – i.e. that the new integrated methodology can provide a more effective way of developing websites, utilizing the four key principles. This thesis points to the need for further research, including the development of a website describing the new methodology. This website will incorporate a software tool to facilitate selection of particular stages, steps and techniques from theintegrated methodology to produce a tailored methodology for any specific project, thereby implementing the concept of “contingency”.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to establish what techniques Swedbank can employ to improve the performance of their external website. Several optimisation techniques for improving front-end performance are presented from user experience and server load perspectives. The website is then evaluated based on the principles identified to determine if and how it can be improved, whereupon testing is employed to determine the benefits of implementing these techniques. The evaluation shows that the Swedbank website can be improved in several ways; the most important being to employ text file compression, caching headers and to combine images together. The report concludes that Swedbank should implement at least these three techniques as they are the most cost-effective from both a user experience and server load perspective.

To be able to reach new audiences and to be able to target new markets, companiesnowadays find great need for localizing content of their online gaming sites. Thisreport highlights the different pitfalls and best practices that need to be consideredwhile targeting an online gaming site towards international customers. These bestpractices have been extracted from contemporary literature and reports and havethen been used to evaluate the work of a company providing an online gaming site. This evaluation has only taken into account the work done by the teams developingthe site, thus no managerial and marketing staff have been approached. The evaluationof the company globalization work has shown that their main problems lie in theprocesses and communication surrounding this kind of work. Many of the pitfalls thatthe company have fallen into may very well be removed by deciding on neededartifacts, processes, and software solutions that could remedy these problems. Suchsoftware could be for example translation memory software that may aid translatorsin their day to day work, providing more consistent translations to the site.

Human beings are seeking simplified and original lifestyles in contrast to the increasingly complicated modern society. Nowadays, minimalism has been widely applied for all kinds of design, products, advertisings or even abstract elements such as ideas and a life of philosophy. Minimalism fulfills the needs of the society with the most simplified visual effects through the logic of elimination. Minimalism presents purification as well as reflects people's hunger to return to purity. The results are as follow : 1.Minimalism, through discussions on its development and ideas, is defined as the most limited design of color simplification, spacing, structural order and mood elimination. However, the completely logical designs without involving the designer's personal emotions has changed. 2.Minimalism has remained a clean, simplified and flawless element not only through modification of the modern design, but also created other elements such as curves, trajectory, asymmetry, or even low-profile Zen. 3.We discover the theory and development of Minimalism through the discussions of it. We understand and conclude the elements of Minimalism, and then we conduct research on the work that interprets it. We conclude the design structure and presentation, which refers to the processes: The re-presentation of originality. The elimination of complication. The spacing. With the three processes to reach the presentation of “purification”, we can not only rediscover the relationship between creatures and the environment but also reconstruct a life of philosophy. This idea can be put into practice in modern design.

Amongst the 319 villages, towns and cities in Taiwan, the majority of towns are facing marginalization. It should be understood that every town contains its own specific culture and environment. This includes the natural landscape, people, and all other features however big or small they might be. These aspects ought to be recognized. The tourism industry has inadequately meet the needs of the Taiwanese general public. Taiwan has its own unique nature, people and resources, which are enriched with rurality. This is attractive to urban residents who want to escape from the hubbub of city life, the urban jungle and from pressure. This town travel upsurge combined with the programs the government is advocating (“revitalize regional industries” and “activate region”) has lead the author to design a travel website for the deeply felt Qingshui District. This is a small town in Taichung City enriched with regional features. The creation of this travel website using multimedia features is specifically designed to differentiate itself from the local government subsidiary website. Literature reviews and case study analysis allowed information to be gathered about Qingshui and emerging trends in rural travel. Web design and design related theories have also been gathered alongside analysis of multiple tourism websites and even other website categories used as references, in order to discover a perfect interactive interface and navigation structure. The creation of the website for the Qingshui District aims to persuade and encourage users to change their ideas about the area. This is reflected through the style of the website, the usage of colors and the graphic design elements which combine to produce a lively rural feeling. In addition, unique animated shapes coordinate within the design of the navigation pane to convey another layer of meaning, producing a whole different feeling. Partial content uses FLASH animation which can also be ‘clicked’ and produces a more enjoyable and interactive experience for the user. This also makes the layout more flexible. The creation and design of the website has attempted to promote travel to Qingshui throughout the world. Hopefully with a ‘click’ and interactive website browsing, more people can understand the Qingshui Disctrict in Taichung City in a new and different way as well as promoting rural travel in Taiwan.
