Abstract:
This doctoral thesis explores the uniqueness of Cree spirituality and law, based in part on oral histories and on Euro-Canadian literal evidence, specifically the multi-volumes of the Jesuit Relations and the thousands of Hudson’s Bay Company manuscripts that re-enforce insights into this Aboriginal governing system. Taken together, the oral and literal primary evidences will define how spirituality and law pre-existed colonisation and are manifested within self-governing institutions currently pursued by First Nations. The purpose is to understand better Cree spirituality and law as captured in Cree self-government models. This Aboriginal legal history contains and studies a plan of action for future self-governance based on inherent Aboriginal legal traditions and jurisprudence.

Abstract:

This dissertation discusses the psychological process that brings a person during his life from the belief in (in the meaning given by Donald W. Winnicott to this term) to a true personal believing attitude along the years of formation to the priesthood in a Catholic Seminary. The dissertation sees this process in the context of a psychoterapic process under the supervision of a clinical psychologist who works together with the pedagogical staff of the seminary, but in a separated professional way. I go out from the hypothesis that a seminarian with a deficit of symbolization (Joyce Mc Dougall) is inclined to live this process in a normotic way. This hypothesis is tested in 5 clinical concrete cases. The passage from the believe in to an attitude of personal believing will depend from the way the future priest interiorizes his priestly vocation and is more or less able to represent it. The dissertation is divided in three main chapters. In the first chapter I present a general overview and contextualization of the history of the different pedagogical stiles adopted by the Catholic Church during the centuries, mainly from the Trient Council till our days. Special consideration is given to the changes brought by the Vatican II Council and to the cultural modern situation. In the second chapter, I try to consider the today´s circunstances of the priestly formation from a sociological perspective, taking as reference the concept of anomia from E. Durkheim. A second and more exact look is given to the question from the psychological viewpoint. My main reference here is W. D.Winnicott, but I consider also other psychologists. Finaly, in a third chapter, I try to make a more sistematic analitical reflection about the human process of maturation of seminarians who are submitted to a formal psychotherapy. In the conclusion I try to present some psychological indications to the increasing group of clinical psychologists who are giving their cooperation to the Church in the difficult task of bringing the students to a personal interiorization of the ideal presented to them by the Church as the ideal of a priestly life

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis outlines a syntactic analysis of Noun Incorporation in Cree. In this construction, certain morphemes, 'medials', that appear as the nominal root of an external NP can alternatively appear within a verb. This thesis extends previous analyses of Algonquian medials by utilizing the theory of Incorporation developed in Baker (1988b). Within this theory of grammar, medials are base-generated as nouns within an 'object' NP and then optionally adjoined to the verb stem as a result of head (X$ sp{ rm o}$) movement. Established restrictions on head movement can account for many properties of NI, including paraphrasing, doubling, bare modifiers, possible thematic relations, and differences between NI and compounds. The efficacy of the syntactic approach validates a modular account of polysynthetic word formation. In addition, the distribution of Cree NI validates several putatively universal principles of theta-role assignment.

It is a well known fact that every capsule-shaped reentry vehicle developed by NASA was initially conceived to land on land, but was ultimately designed to land in water. In all cases, the primary factor contributing to this fundamental shift was related to difficulties with keeping the vehicle to within its mass allocation. In recognizing the recurrence of this scenario during the development of the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV), the concept of airbag-based crew impact attenuation was identified as being a potential means for providing a low mass, reconfigurable alternative to the currently baselined pallet-strut design. This thesis presents the development effort undertaken to determine the feasibility of this concept in terms of protecting an astronaut from the impact loads incurred during the nominal 7.62m/s Orion CEV landing on land. Through the complete development and testing of an analog airbag system and an intermediate technology demonstrator, practical means for system implementation have been developed, and insights into the influence of the system configuration on its overall impact attenuation performance obtained. These findings have culminated in the design and implementation of a full-scale multi airbag system, which has been experimentally shown to be capable of maintaining the risk of injury to the occupant during a 7.85m/s, 0' impact angle land-landing to within the NASA specified limit of 0.5%. In accomplishing this, the airbag-based impact attenuation concept has been proven to be feasible. Moreover, the obtained test results suggest that by implementing anti-bottoming airbags to prevent direct contact between the system and the landing surface, the system performance during landings with 0' impact angles can be further improved, by at least a factor of two. Additionally, a series of drop tests from the nominal Orion impact angle of 30' indicated that severe injury risk levels would be sustained beyond impact velocities of 5m/s. This is due to the differential stroking of the airbags within the system causing a shearing effect between the occupant seat structure and the spacecraft floor, removing significant stroke from the airbags. These results combined indicate that with further detailed design in the context of the currently fixed Orion crew cabin design, and the enforcement of a flat impact angle during landing, airbag-based impact attenuation may prove to be the key to finally achieving the elusive goal of capsule-shaped vehicle reentry and land-landing.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is a naval combatant designed to operate in the littoral regions. Twenty-four LCSs will be built over the next five years employing a crew rotation concept where three crews rotate between two ships. During the construction period, an experienced crew must be assigned, which disrupts the desired crew rotation in ships already built. This thesis develops LCS Scheduler (LCSS), a mathematical optimization model using a mixed-integer, linear program (MIP) to aid in assigning LCS crews to LCS ships. LCSS’s objective is to minimize the penalty associated with assigning crews outside of their desired ship pairing and/or extending them beyond four months in a phase. Results are compared based on solve time and penalty value. The MIP solution has the best quality. Yet, even for a shorter-than-desired time horizon, it takes many hours of computation. Rolling horizon is a heuristic approach that produces a full, long-term schedule in under an hour but requires manual modifications to misaligned crews. Fix-and-relax is a more-elaborate heuristic with potential benefits to crew alignment for longer-range schedules. The planner must balance solve time and solution quality when determining the approach to LCSS.

The Psychic Function of Belief is a research undertaken in order to analyze the importance of belief for humans. It begins with an exploration of the theoretical foundations on the experience of believing, first, within the Sciences of Religion, then according to the vision of psychoanalysis. The theoretical foundation was taken from Freudian psychoanalysis and psychoanalysis Winnicottian not only from the look of theirs creators, as well as from contemporary s psychoanalysts. The second chapter focuses on the discussion about the representation of God in the human psyche, as psychoanalytic approach. The central themes are the illusion, that takes a completely different treatment by Freud and Winnicott, and the issues involved in the formation of identity and alterity, from both theoretical views. The third and final chapter is devoted to the psychic function of belief. It seeks toinvestigate the various types of assistance received by the individual who believes in God. In there, is made a brief analysis of the benefits and harmsimposedonto the individual who has a religious belief. At the end is taken a brief reflection about the non-religious belief.

Abstract:
The Corncrake Crex crex is classified as vulnerable in Sweden according to the Red List of Swedish species. The number of Corncrakes is generally declining and this has been observed in few countries for more than 100 years. In the province of Värmland in Midwestern Sweden, the Corncrake is seldom seen, but more often heard. A national inventory of the Corncrake was made during 2008 and many volunteer ornithologists in the province of Värmland were involved in the work. Observations of singing Corncrakes were done during nights in the agricultural landscape. Totally 64 singing male Corncrakes have been observed during May, June and July. The results of this study show that the Corncrakes in the province of Värmland do not choose a certain habitat type to establish on. Neither do they choose a certain part of the province geographically. The size of the field seems important when choosing a suitable field and in average a Corncrake had an area of 450 ha to utilize. Different habitat elements have been investigated near the observation locations of the Corncrakes. Roads nearby the fields do not prevent the Corncrakes from settling and singing. The distribution of days when different individuals were singing or silent revealed six possible matings in three different individuals (twice each) and also one probable move from one location to another. There is more than one way to promote the Corncrakes existence in the province of Värmland, and one of them is to delay the mowing of the field or to mow in a different manner.

Abstract:
This study investigates the importance of traditional hunting knowledge to Cree identity and experience. My fieldwork was conducted in Wemindji, James Bay, Quebec, with Cree trappers and on the interactions of scientific researchers and Cree trappers. I explore the connections between these interactions and wider relationships of the Crees with histories of extractive development and the State. The misrecognition or negation of Cree authority in development discourse and outcomes has contributed to subsistence practices and traditional hunting knowledge becoming politically and emotionally charged signifiers. I argue that subsistence practices and traditional hunting knowledge have come to encode cultural difference and the assertion of authority in relation to struggles for recognition of Cree authority over their traditional territories.

Bayliss, Christopher. "Airline reserve crew scheduling under uncertainty." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/33054/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of airline reserve crew scheduling under crew absence and journey time uncertainty. This work is primarily concerned with the allocation of reserve crew to standby duty periods. The times at which reserve crew are on duty, determine which possible crew absence or delay disruptions they can be used to absorb. When scheduling reserve crew, the goal is to minimise the expected levels of delay and cancellation disruptions that occur on the day of operation. This work introduces detailed probabilistic models of the occurrence of crew absence and delay disruptions and how reserve crew are used to absorb such disruptions. Firstly, separate probabilistic models are developed for crew absence and delay disruptions. Then, an integrated probabilistic model of absence and delay disruptions is introduced, which accounts for: delays from all causes; delay propagation; cancellations resulting from excessive delays and crew absence; the use of reserve crew to cover such disruptions given a reserve policy; and the possibility of swap recovery actions as an alternative delay recovery action. The model yields delay and cancellation predictions that match those derived from simulation to a high level of accuracy and does so in a fraction of the time required by simulation. The various probabilistic models are used in various search methodologies to find disruption minimising reserve crew schedules. The results show that high quality reserve crew schedules can be derived using a probabilistic model. A scenario-based mixed integer programming approach to modelling operational uncertainty and reserve crew use is also developed in this thesis and applied to the problem of reserve crew scheduling. A scenario selection heuristic is introduced which improves reserve crew schedule quality using fewer input scenarios. The secondary objective of this thesis is to investigate the effect of the reserve policy used on the day of operation, that is, determining when and which reserve crew should be utilised. The questions of how reserve policies can be improved and how they should be taken into account when scheduling reserve crew are addressed. It was found that the approaches developed for reserve crew scheduling lend themselves well to an online application, that is, using them to evaluate alternative reserve decisions to ensure reserve crew are used as effectively as possible. In general it is shown that `day of operation' disruptions can be significantly reduced through both improved reserve crew schedules and/or reserve policies. This thesis also points the way towards future research based on the proposed approaches.

Vera, Valdes Victor Andres <1975&gt. "Integrating Crew Scheduling and Rostering Problems." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2010. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/2705/.

Full text
Abstract:
Crew scheduling and crew rostering are similar and related problems which can be solved by similar procedures. So far, the existing solution methods usually create a model for each one of these problems (scheduling and rostering), and when they are solved together in some cases an interaction between models is considered in order to obtain a better solution. A single set covering model to solve simultaneously both problems is presented here, where the total quantity of drivers needed is directly considered and optimized. This integration allows to optimize all of the depots at the same time, while traditional approaches needed to work depot by depot, and also it allows to see and manage the relationship between scheduling and rostering, which was known in some degree but usually not easy to quantify as this model permits. Recent research in the area of crew scheduling and rostering has stated that one of the current challenges to be achieved is to determine a schedule where crew fatigue, which depends mainly on the quality of the rosters created, is reduced. In this approach rosters are constructed in such way that stable working hours are used in every week of work, and a change to a different shift is done only using free days in between to make easier the adaptation to the new working hours. Computational results for real-world-based instances are presented. Instances are geographically diverse to test the performance of the procedures and the model in different scenarios.

Smith, Barbara Mary. "Bus crew scheduling using mathematical programming." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1986. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1053/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a bus crew scheduling system, IMPACS, which has been demonstrated to be successful for a wide variety of scheduling conditions, and is at present in regular use by three British bus companies including the largest, London Buses Ltd. The background to the bus crew scheduling problem 1S described and the existing literature on methods for solution is reviewed. In IMPACS, the crew scheduling problem is formulated as an integer linear programme using a formulation which is an extension of set covering; a very large set of possible duties is generated, from which the duties forming the schedule are selected in such a way as to minimise the total cost. The variables of the set covering problem correspond to the duties generated and the constraints to the pieces of work in the bus schedule. For realistic schedules, it is impossible to generate all legal duties, and there are often too many pieces of work to allow each one to give rise to a constraint. IMPACS contains several heuristic methods which reduce the set covering problem to a manageable size, while still allowing good quality schedules to be compiled. Techniques for speeding up the solution of the set covering problem have been investigated, and in particular a branching strategy which exploits features of the crew scheduling problem has been developed.

Abstract:
In the framework of French Semiotics, knowing and believing are conceived as articulated modalities at the same and unique cognitive universe and that can be discriminated by the type of relationship and valuation they establish with the cognitive object. Initially treated by a categorical perspective, as Greimass (1983), who describes the epistemic act by means of the semiotic square terms and junctive operations, they suffer a theoretical reformulation by Zilberberg, who privileges tensive aspects associated to the terms. Based on these notions, this study aims to investigate tensive oscillations linked to subject cognitive operations, understand in each way knowing and believing operate and cross each other in the cognitive dimension, and also how they can be discriminated and placed on hierarchy. We also intend to discuss how believing takes part in sciences and the conditions of truth in science as a discursive practice. Keeping this in mind, we promote a theoretical debate about these modalities, resorting to, besides Greimas and Zilberberg, authors that also thought and wrote about knowing and believing, as Fontanille (1982) e (1987), Pottier (1983), Landowski (1983), Coquet (1983) e Geninasca (1983). In order to give rise to those reflections, and based on the methodological procedures and approach text tolls provided by the aforementioned authors, we undertake the analysis of three objects that thematically explore the modalities knowing and believing and extract some sense effects from their opposition, overlap, exacerbation, attenuation and lack: the short story Funes the memorious (1944), by Jorge Luis Borges, the movie Doubt (2008), by John Patrick Shanley, and a brief poem recited by Antonio Abujamra at a television show named Provocações. By the fulfillment of this study, we also aim to tackle Greimas and Courtés prediction, at their Dictionnaire raisonné de la théorie du langage (1979), that points out the concept of believing, for its centrality at the human phenomenon of discursive production, as a relevant theme for the semiotics research of the years to come.

Full text
Abstract:
Aboriginal youth well-being is an increasingly important topic. Research with mainstream populations highlights two keys to well-being, namely perceived personal control, and a clear sense of self-identity. However, despite relevance for Aboriginal groups, underappreciated to date is the potential role of perceived collective control, and clarity of collective identity, for well-being. Thus, the present program of research investigated the impact of collective control and identity on the well-being of Aboriginal youth. Residents of two Cree communities in northern Manitoba collaborated in the research. Based on community members' input on important community and youth issues, we developed two surveys on youth well-being, which were completed by students in grades 7 and up.
The results of Study 1 indicated that greater perceived individual-level internal control was associated with greater psychological well-being. As well, investigating for the first time perceived group-level control and Aboriginal youth well-being, the results indicated that greater perceived group-level internal control was associated with greater well-being. However, the results additionally suggested an association between greater perceived external control (Others and Creator) and greater well-being. The effect of group-level internal control on well-being was mediated by individual-level internal control, but not moderated by strength of Native identity. Finally, the results suggested a significant relationship between greater strength of aspects of cultural identity and greater well-being.
Study 2 expanded upon these findings, employing revised measures to assess perceived control, identity clarity, and substance use. Similar to Study 1, the results of Study 2 indicated an association between greater perceived individual-level internal control and greater psychological well-being, as well as between individual-level others control and well-being. Additionally, multidimensional measures of control indicated an association between greater perceived individual-level control over drinking and decreased well-being. Furthermore, Study 2 indicated an association between greater perceived group-level internal control and greater psychological well-being. This relationship was partially mediated by individual-level internal control. Finally, the results suggested an association between greater strength of cultural identity and greater well-being.
Overall, the present program of research provides key preliminary support for a greater consideration of group-level factors in well-being, particularly in efforts to enhance and support Aboriginal youth well-being.
