Full textThe objective of this study is to investing ate the thermo-mechanical behaviour of a fuel rod which is composed of a tube containing cylindrical uranium dioxide fuel pellets. A lot of work has been particularly devoted to the design and the set up of an original experimental device which allows the simulation of the pellet-cladding mechanical interaction during the uprating of water pressurised reactors. The mode) is a two-dimensional plane stress one which has not taken the effects of irradiation and chemical transformation into account. Both experimental and numerical analyses on the cladding stresses concentration have been carried out. Different effects have been studied including the presence of cracks in the pellets, the coefficient of friction between pellet-cladding, the initial gap at the pellet-cladding interface, the cladding external pressure and the variation of power, The comparison of experimental and numerical results, for a particular case, enables a better understanding of pellet-cladding mechanical interaction et demonstrates that the modelisation of the joint element used in the pellet-cladding interface is appropriate. It should be pointed out that a simple elastic approach had been carried out before the thermoplastic experiment was done, aiming at analysing the stress concentrations due to the presence of cracks in the pellet

Full textAmong the original projects of the Gendarmerie new history, this Ph. D. Dissertation is a reflection on gendarmes through the XXth century’s social imaginary. This work aims at clarifying the legitimacy of gendarmes through time, contexts, social representations, but also the military missions. After recalling the inheritance of the XIXth century, which weighs heavily on the collective mentalities, this study encompasses two chrono-thematic axes. The XXth century starts with the analysis of the specific imaginary developed by the missions of the military police during the First World War. In-between the two World Wars, the public order is focused by politicians and social figures. If the traditional missions of gendarmes are not questioned, the gendarmerie still needs to create a good public standing. Therefore, the behaviour of every gendarme is under scrutiny. With the Second World War, the legalism of the institution is inquired. Finally, the study focuses on the progressive legitimazation of the public order. Thanks to a growing policy of public relation, based on popular public services (investigations, traffic control…), the institution eventually earns good public standing

Full textThe theoretical framework of this research distinguishes two paradigms in school geometry : on the one hand Gl (spatio-graphical geometry), whose objects are physical and validations perceptive, and on the other hand G2 (proto-axiomatic geometry), whose objects are theoretical and validations hypothetic-deductive. At the beginning of their training, the relation of pre-service elementary schoolteachers (PE1) with geometry poses problems because they will have to make their pupils work essentially in Gl, whereas they have to use G2 for solving the geometry problems set in by the competitive examination that they have to sit. This work highlights the procedures used by PE1 to draw a perpendicular bisector with instruments under different constraints and in their degree of expertise in perpendicular bisector, through the study of their adaptability to these constraints. Such an adaptability is in fact connected with the cognitive 'availability' of the G2 paradigm. This research confirmed that the PE1 work within various paradigms : Gland G2, but also a local and Personal 'pseudo-paradigm' linked with both Gl and G2. Besides, the 'obviousness' of the drawing, the lack of knowledge and competence in G2, the automation of construction procedures which empties them of any meaning, constitute as many determining factors for the fact that they are not able to work in G2 when the situation requires it. Nevertheless, this work shows that an awareness of these paradigms can be set up through a specific engineering focused upon the writing and justification of construction scripts. This allows the students, at least in the short run, to evolve towards G2 and improve their skills in G2

Full textThe art of portrait drawings was specific to France in the 16th century and is closely associated with the birth itself of independent portraiture. A big collector of portraits, Catherine de' Medici was known to be the heir to a tradition which dated back to King René and to Charles VIII and was practiced by François I. This tradition consisted of small collections of portrait drawings representing relatives and favorites. The collection of Catherine de' Medici was, however, very different to these small collections, not only by its extraordinary scope (many hundreds of sheets), but above all by its composition which excluded all bad copies, keeping only the best works mostly from the workshops of Jean and François Clouet, and by its arrangement which became the standard for collections in the following centuries. This study puts forward a detailed analysis of the collection and included a catalogue raisonné of drawings belonging to it, which are today scattered across many museums

Full textIn the hypothetical conditions of a reactivity initiated accident in a nuclear power plant, some of the cylindrical rods, that contain the fuel, could break. If fuel fragmentation occurs, hot fuel particles and pressurized gas could be ejected out of the rod and then interact with the surrounding fluid. The consequences of this interaction are studied by IRSN . The violence of this interaction depends particularly on the discharge rate of the fuel particles. The aim of this thesis, was to study this dynamics. We simulated the fuel particles and gas ejection dynamics by the flow of a dense granular material and a gas from a confined space toward an open space. We focused on the experimental study of the stationary discharge of a silo composed of monodisperse spherical glass beads, with an orifice either lateral or at the bottom of the silo, with or without air flow. The measured parameters were the mass flow rate and the pressure along the silo, whereas the controlled parameters were the size of particles, the size of orifices, and the flow rate of air. To understand the underlying physical mechanism, discrete and continuous numerical simulations were also performed and compared to the experimental results. For the case of a lateral orifice, when the form of the orifice is rectangular, we identified two regimes that depend on the ratio of width to height. For the case with air flow, we found that the flow rate increases significantly with the air flow. We used a simple physical model to describe the grains and gas ejection taking into account the pressure gradient imposed by the fluid on the particles around the orifice

Full textPressurized Water Reactor (PWR) fuel rods are made of ceramic pellets (UO2,(U,Pu)O2 or gadolinium fuel) assembled in a zirconium alloy cladding tube. By design, an initial gap, filled with helium, exists between these two elements. However during irradiation this gap decreases gradually, on the one hand, owing to a variation in cladding diameter, due to creepdown caused by pressure from the coolant, and, on the other hand, increased pellet diameter, due to thermal expansion, and swelling. In hot conditions, during the second or third cycle of irradiation, the pellet/cladding gap is closed. However, during the return to cooler conditions, the gap can reopen. At a high burnup (generally beyond the 3rd cycle of irradiation) an inner zirconia layer of the order of 10 to 15 $mu$m is developed by oxidation leading to a chemical bonding between the pellet and the cladding. This bonding layer may contribute to a non-reopening of the pellet-cladding gap.Currently, only destructive examinations, after cutting fuel rods, allow the visualization of this area, however, they require a preliminary preparation of the samples in a hot cell. This limits the number of tests and measurements on the fuel rods. In this context, the Institute of Electronic and Systems of Montpellier University (IES - UMR CNRS 5214), in collaboration with the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), Electricité de France (EDF) and Framatome, is developing a high frequency acoustic microscope adapted to the control and imaging of the pellet/cladding interface by taking into account the complexity of the structure's cladding which has a tubular form. Because the geometrical, chemical and mechanical nature of the contact interface is neither axially nor radially homogeneous, the ultrasonic system must allow the acquisition of 2D images of this interface by means of controlled displacements of the sample rod along both its axis and its circumference. The final objective of the designed acoustic microscope is to be introduced in hot cells

Full textSeveral years' experience in France in ail types of institutions which care for small infants (neonatology, maternity departments, nurseries and play-groups), Senegal and Mauritania, the author of the present work has discovered and formalised a simple daring method that allows small infants to make a free autonomous, expressive and directional body movement so as to communicate with the adult caring for him. The methodical tool is call the COGL (jeu de Communication Orale et de Gestuelle Libérée - Oral Communication And Free Body Movement Game) Its effects are remarkable: free body movements that are graceful, intentional, signs of well-being, reinforced communication with the other, improved feeding, at whatever age, the alleviation of traumatic effects, and for older children, effective preparation for pre-graphic drawing. Each institution : an account of the experiments carried out describes the practice of the COGL game and reveals its results. Analysis of the metapsychological foundations of the method. From Freud to Winnicott to Lacan, the genealogy of fthe COGL game is set out. The COGL game thus takes place in a precise setting (Winnicott) that the adult can easily put into place so that the small infant can relive an intra-uterine situation (Freud). This experiment not only frees the infant's motivity (Grenier) but it also reproduces an aesthetic experience (Meltzer). In an interpretation inspired by Haag's psychoanalytic approach, the author shows how the COGL game is a tool that is easy to implement which would allow ail institutions and adults to encourage an contact that is very beneficial both for them and for the infant

Full textIn a nuclear reactor, the fuel is in the form of cylindrical pellets, surrounded by the cladding. During irradiation, the pellets expand, the diameter of the cladding decreases under coolant pressure, and the two objects mechanically interact. During an incident, the power change causes the fuel to expand further, increasing the stresses in the cladding. Safety requires that the integrity of the cladding (first containment barrier) and the absence of core melting are ensured. To better understand the physical phenomena related to PCI under these transient conditions, specific experiments are carried out in dedicated research reactors. Today, the majority of measurements are performed before and after the experiment, giving only the initial and final state of the system and thus limiting the amount of available information. The work of this thesis focuses on the development of a measurement method dedicated to the on-line characterization of the PCI kinetics as well as to the detection of the onset of central fuel melting. In this thesis, we identify with the ALCYONE code the parameters to be measured to characterize these two phenomena and develop a numerical model to study the effect of core melting onset. An experimental study, IMPIGRITIA, is carried out to state on the feasibility to detect the origin and evolution of the contact between the pellets and the cladding by means of fuel element vibrations. Finally, we recommend the most suitable technical solutions available and under development for the ADELINE irradiation device of the Jules Horowitz Reactor

O primeiro artigo intitulado ?Age and Origin of the Neoproterozoic Brauna Kimberlites: magma generation within the metasomatized base of the São Francisco craton, Brazil?, teve como principal objetivo a classificação petrogenética dos kimberlitos e xenólitos associados do Campo Kimberlítica Brauna, desde então superficialmente explorada por empresas de exploração de diamantes na década de 80 e 90.
Abstract: The present thesis deals with the classification of the Brauna Kimberlite Field magmatism, northeast São Francisco Craton, and its relationship with the host-rock, xenoliths (e.g. crustal and mantelic), diamondiferous mineralization and the regional tectonic context associated to the Rio Itapicuru greenstone belt and Serrinha Block. The scope of this study refers to conventional methodologies such as scanning electron microscope, electronic microprobe and X-ray difratometry for the mineralogy classification of the Brauna kimberlites and the related xenoliths. Additionally, we have used more robust analytical techniques applied to the kimberlite study, such as ICPMS and XRF and also isotopic analysis of whole rock and perovskite Sr-Nd isotope, and also zircon U-Pb geochronology, using TIMS and SHRIMP respectively, to understand the kimberlitic source and magma generation process. This volume was organized under paper form where the results, discussions and conclusions are reported. The first manuscript entitle -Age and Origin of the Neoproterozoic Brauna Kimberlites: magma generation within the metasomatized base of the São Francisco craton, Brazil, had the main subject the Brauna kimberlites and xenoliths petrogenetic classifications, since then superficially explored by the exploration Companies during the 80's and 90's decades. In this article we have utilized conventional techniques for rock classification such as petrographic descriptions, field relationships i.e. SEM, RAMAM and X-Ray difratometry for major and trace elements geochemistry. Also we have analysed the samples by most advanced techniques inexistent in the Brazilian literature so far, for example: trace elements using ICPMS, U-Pb perovskite dating and whole rock Sr-Nd and perovskite Nd isotope by TIMS. Furthermore, this manuscript has contributed for the international kimberlite community discussion about the heterogeneous kimberlitic magma types. The second manuscript entitled -Zircon xenocrysts U-Pb dating from the Neoproterozoic Brauna Kimberlite Field, São Francisco Craton, Brazil: geodynamic implications for kimberlitic intrusion, was awarded with U-Pb isotopic data in zircon xenocrysts in Brauna kimberlites and its host rock Nordestina granodiorite batholith using the SHRIMP. This article had the principal objective, to place constraints on the lithosphere beneath the Archean Serrinha Block. Furthermore, the detailed isotopic study on the host-rock was important to improve our understanding about the form and dynamic of the kimberlitic intrusion. It is important to note that this paper is the second published paper with this subject in the world

Full textThis thesis investigates the Palaeoproterozoic crust of the West African Craton in southwest Ghana, providing insight into its controversial geodynamic and tectonic evolution. Rocks of the study area comprise greenschist- to amphibolite facies, mafic to felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, high-grade paragneisses and low-grade volcano-sedimentary packages, all of which are extensively intruded by multiple generations of granitoids. New lithological, metamorphic and structural maps are constructed using integrated field mapping and interpretation of regional airborne geophysical datasets. This approach is used to constrain the deformation history of the sparsely exposed rocks of the NE- to NNE-striking Sefwi Greenstone Belt and the adjacent volcano-sedimentary domains deformed during the Eburnean Orogeny (2150-2070 Ma). Combined geochemical and geochronological analysis of the magmatic suites of the Sefwi Greenstone Belt reveal calc-alkaline, volcanic arc affinities, as well as a striking similarity to Neoarchean TTGs that require diverse magma sources and petrogenetic processes. Rare inherited zircon cores from the Palaeoproterozoic magmatic suite yield ages of ca. 2250 to 2270 Ma, with granitoid emplacement ages ranging between ca. 2189 and 2081 Ma. Zircon Lu-Hf analysis reveals consistently positive eHf(t) values and two-stage crustal model ages between 2650 and 2250 Ma, indicative of a radiogenic proto-crust and short crustal residence times. The magmatic evolution reveals the coeval generation of sodic, high-silica TTGs derived from partial melting of low-K mafic sources and dioritic magmas generated in a metasomatised, LILE-enriched mantle wedge at ca. 2155 Ma. Subsequent emplacement of high-K quartz monzonites at ca. 2136 Ma supports the interaction of mantle-derived magmas and remelting of existing TTGs. The final stage of magmatism is characterised by the emplacement of two-mica-granites and leucogranites along the NW margin of the Sefwi Greenstone Belt between ca. 2092 and 2081 Ma, interpreted as a terminal collisional event during the Eburnean Orogeny. Eburnean metamorphism and deformation is characterised in the study area by initial high-pressure amphibolite facies metamorphism corresponding with low apparent geothermal gradients (HP-MT, ~15-17°C/km). D1 NNW-SSE shortening generated a ubiquitous bedding-parallel foliation (S1) and ~E-W striking thrust faults, resulting in the burial of supracrustal rocks and crustal thickening. In the high-grade terrane, subsequent amphibolite-granulite facies metamorphism is associated with anatexis. In-situ SHRIMP U-Pb monazite ages at ca. 2073 Ma, hosted within, D2 mineral assemblages, are interpreted as the initial timing of cooling and exhumation, significantly later than paroxysmal metamorphism in NW Ghana and central Ivory Coast (2150-2130 Ma). NNE-striking normal detachments and constrictional deformation structures formed during sinistral ENW-WSW transtension (D2), during which segments of the middle- and lower crust were juxtaposed with low-grade domains. Subsequent E-W directed shortening (D3) caused the dextral re- activation of NE-SW striking shear zones, associated with a localised greenschist facies metamorphic overprint. We propose that the juvenile crust of southwest Ghana was generated in an intra-oceanic arc setting, associated with diverse and intense subduction-related magmatism until subsequent terrane accretion and collision. The north-western margin of the Sefwi Greenstone Belt in interpreted as a suture between the separate arc terranes, diachronously accreted during the Eburnean Orogeny. The Palaeoproterozoic crust of the southern portion of the West African Craton represents a juvenile crustal growth event, recording the unique geodynamic and orogenic processes associated with nascent subduction-related plate tectonics in the early Earth

Full textAn anorogenic magmatism covered a large part (1.500.000 km2) of the Amazonian craton at ca. 1880 Ma and defined a Silicic Large Igneous Province (SLIP) called the Uatumã event. The aim of this work is to study the paleomagnetism and petrology of these rocks to define the space-time framework of the Uatumã event and to try to elucidate the Amazonian craton evolution during the Columbia supercontinent amalgamation. Two regions were selected in the southwestern Amazonian craton (Pará) for sampling: (1) The Tucumã area where 16 felsic dikes, 7 mafic dikes, a gabbroic dike and 3 sites of the Archean basement were collected, and (2) the São Felix do Xingu area where, 7 sites of rhyolitic lava flows, 2 sites of ignimbrites, a felsic dike and a volcanic breccia belonging to the Santa Rosa Formation were sampled, and also 6 sites of the Sobreiro Formation (volcanoclastic rocks, andesitic) and one felsic dike of the Velho Guilherme Suite were collected. Petrology of the felsic dikes of Tucumã (1880.9 ± 6.7 Ma U-Pb zrn) showed that they represent the dike swarm associated with the Santa Rosa volcanic Formation. The remanent magnetization of the felsic dikes is carried by PSD magnetite and hematite. This hematite is syn- to post magmatic derived from hydrothermal fluids. Magnetic mineralogy can be used as a proxy to quantify the hydrothermal alteration. AF, thermal, LTD + AF and LTD + thermal demagnetizations show a northwest direction with a positive inclination (component A), whose site mean directions gives a paleomagnetic pole located at 52.9°S, 76.4°E, A95= 10.4 °, K= 13.52). However, this component seems to represent a remagnetization, probabily occurred at Neoproterozoic times. Another magnetic component (named component B) was also isolated for these rocks, and it was associated to a Mesozoic regional remagnetization related to the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP). Yet, a third southwestern direction with low positive inclination (component C) was also isolated for some sites. This component was interpreted to be related with the ca. 1760 Ma Velho Guilherme magmatic intrusion. The best paleomagnetic results were obtained in the São Felix do Xingu area. Two new primary paleomagnetic poles have been determined: (i) SF1 pole (319.7°E, 24.7°S, N= 10; A95= 16.9 °) was obtained for andesites and rhyolites dated to 1877.4 ± 4.3 Ma (U-Pb zrn, LA-ICPMS), and its primary origin is confirmed by an inverse baked contact test (> 1853 Ma). Petrography shows that the magnetic mineralogy of this component is hematite formed by hydrothermal fluids syn- to post magmatic. (Ii) SF2 pole (220.1°E, 31.1°N, N= 15 ° A95= 9.7 °) was determined by the remanent magnetization of the felsic dike of the Velho Guilherme Suite but also as secondary magnetizations in samples of the Santa Rosa and Sobreiro Formations. An age of 1853.7 ± 6.2 Ma (U-Pb zrn, LA-ICPMS) is calculated for the felsic dike carrying SF2, whose primary origin is confirmed by a positive baked contact test. The SF1 and SF2 poles have a significant difference in angular distance, for a time interval of only ~25 Ma. Similar coeval paleomagnetic discrepancies were observed for other cratons (India, Superior (Laurentia), Slave (Laurentia), Kalahari, Baltica and Siberia), which can be explained by a True Polar Wander (TPW) event at ca. 1880 - 1860 Ma. This period is marked by a high mantle activity, which results in the amalgamation of the Columbia supercontinent, formed at ca. 1850 - 1800 Ma. Amalgamation of supercontinent may cause the formation of superplume and thermal insulation which can disturb mass distribution in mantle and alter the inertial gravity tensor of the Earth. A True Polar Wander (TPW) event may thus have taken place, which will move the cratons and the superplumes towards the equator. These conditions may be related to a reorganization of the whole mantle following a global magmatic quiescence between 2400 and 2200 Ma

Full textAs part of the search for new sources of clean and sustainable energy, the mechanisms for the formation of dihydrogen (H2) in intracratonic environments were studied. Natural emissions of H2 have been described in the vicinity of mid-ocean ridges and ophiolite belts. This natural gas production, as documented in the literature, is closely related to the metasomatism of mantle rocks which are rich in mafic minerals, through the serpentinization reaction. In Kansas (USA), intracratonic H2 seepages were revealed in the 80’s by studies of H2-rich wells. Our work is based on a new borehole D#2 (Kansas, USA), and two boreholes previously studied in the 80s, Heins#1 and Scott#1 (Kansas, USA). The D#2 well provides access to a moderately deep aquifer (~ 300 m) loaded with H2. The gas is also composed of N2 and CH4 similarly to the gases issued from ophiolitic contexts. Helium is present in substantial quantities -compared to preceding contexts- in these boreholes. A multidisciplinary gas/water/rock study was carried out to understand the processes generating the production of H2 in this geological setting, to quantify the gas so generated, and to determine the relationship of H2 with other gaseous species. The results of these studies in parallel with the regional geological setting and observed lithology allowed (1) to propose several scenarios to explain the observed associations of gas and (2) to discuss the origin and production process of H2, He and N2

Full textCrangon crangon estuarine populations were analyzed in the European coast line near the south and northern edges of its latitudinal range. This study comprises a population dynamics and productivity examination on Minho Estuary (NW of the Iberia Peninsula) and on Valosen Estuary (N coast of Norway). The populations were examined on the in uence of abiotic factors, foci in temperature, salinity, and estuarine characteristics. A comprehensive comparison among both populations was performed, including latitudinal trends, species intrinsic processes of adaptation and their responses to ecosystem changes in short time scales. This study, focused on the processes underlying adaptations to less favorable locations of abundant species, aims to contribute to a better understanding of estuarine productivity and the ecological role for this species. In fact, the knowledge of a speci c estuary functioning, its ecological role, populations sustained and physical characteristics, can provide reliable data for management polices targeting ongoing and future impacts from anthropogenic pressure, such as, the global climatic changes.

The design of crampons is studied and a new, more comfortable, flexible crampon design is proposed. A brief history of crampons is provided and then the current state of crampon design is discussed. Two major problems in modern crampons were identified. The first big problem was that the crampons are extremely hard to use and adjust especially in cold, wet conditions. The second problem was the comfort of the crampons on the hikers feet. While this issue may seem somewhat trivial, when hikers are on a multi-day expedition they need to keep their feet in the best possible condition. Therefore, a crampon design that makes use of larger safety straps operable by a person wearing gloves is proposed. The center of the crampon itself is flexible, being made from spring steel. This allows the crampon to flex with a hiker's foot, thereby improving walking comfort.
