Abstract:

Abstract:
The British Library has a collection of 8 Southeast Asian Quranic manuscripts which have now been digitized. The Quranic manuscripts were collected from the 19th century until 2012. Initially, colonial philologists paid little attention to Quranic manuscripts and prayer’s books in Arabic. In fact, until the end of the 20th century there were only two copies of the ancient Qur’anic manuscripts there. This article wants to describe the development of the paradigm of British philologists and librarians at the British Library towards the ancient Qur’anic manuscripts of Nusantara. This study focuses on three Quranic manuscripts from the Javanese collection of John Crawfurd and Russel Jones with the code Add 12312, Add12343, and Or16877. These three manuscripts will be analyzed for their characteristics. The data used were sourced from literature review and interviews which were processed descriptively and analytically. The results of this study indicate a process that perceives the philologists and librarians in the British Library towards Quranic manuscripts of Nusantara, from the assumption that the manuscripts are not valuable to be valuable. This article also describes historical data related to the role of John Crawfurd and Russell Jones in tracing the Javanese Quranic manuscripts.

Abstract:
Transcriptions of Central Javanese gamelan melodies published in England in the early nineteenth century by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and John Crawfurd are recognizably similar to compositions performed today and offer an opportunity to gauge change in an oral tradition. Comparison with modern concordances shows considerable stability in modal practice and the idiom of the rebab, provides evidence of changes in specific pieces, raises questions regarding regional variants and the significance of melodic register, and supports the viability of early repertory lists from other sources as a basis for historical research.

Chinese Muslim community play a role in the history of Islami- zation in Java, so it should be raised "Theory of China" in the history of the entry and development of Islam in the region. So far, the discussion of Islamization theory is always associated with the Middle East /Arab and India only- like pioneer of the theory of Arab/Middle East is Crawfurd, Keijzer, Naimann, de Hollander, including some Indonesia-Malay histo- rians like Hasjmi, al-Attas, Hamka, Djajadiningrat and Mukti Ali. While advocates of the India theory among others are Pijnapel, Hurgronje, Morison, Kern, Winsted, Fatimi, Vlekke, Gonda and Srhrieke. Almost no historians who argue explicitly that the Islamization in Java comes from China. Though both "Theory of India" and the Middle East, especially Saudi Hadramaut aren’t free of weaknesses.

Abstract:
This article investigates how British officials and observers of the Malay Archipelago in the nineteenth century explained the prevalence of piracy in the region, particularly in terms of race and civilization. The writings by, among others, Thomas Stamford Raffles, John Crawfurd, James Brooke and Peter Benson Maxwell on contemporary Malay piracy are analysed. Whereas there was broad agreement among these observers that the alleged lack of civilization on the part of the Malays was a major reason for the prevalence of piracy in the region, there was considerable disagreement about the Malays’ capacity for civilizational progress and improvement. The degree to which the Malays were deemed capable of civilization in turn influenced the policies and measures implemented by the British to suppress piracy, ranging from the promotion of free trade to the wholesale extermination of entire villages and communities of suspected pirates. Criticism from humanitarians and liberals in London against the brutality of the latter tactics, however, led to a more restrained British deployment of violence in the Malay Archipelago from the middle of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
Debating the arrival of Islam in the archipelago, many historians have their own views and arguments. Arab trade in the archipelago has left very clear traces. This trace is compared as evidence of the early emergence of Islam. Thomas W. Arnold, John Crawfurd, L. W. C Van den Berg and Michael Laffan are figures who have the opinion that Arab traders had an important role in the process of entering Islam in the archipelago. This research is a theoretical study with the concept of library research which reconstructs the thoughts and views of these figures to see the influence of Arab traders in the archipelago. Even in the 2nd century BC Arab traders traded with Sri Lanka. The trading ability of the Arabs then solidified their dominance in the West-Eastern trade world which has intensified since the 7th century AD. Although some experts doubt the ability of Arab traders and their relations in the spread of Islam, Arab trading activities have been able to contribute to the Islamic world in the archipelago.

Abstract:
Sixteen species of thrips in three families were identified from slide-mounted specimens collected from emergence traps placed beneath and between citrus trees in southwest and central Florida between 1989 and 1992. Species in the family Thripidae included: Chirothrips spiniceps (Hood), Frankliniella bispinosa (Morgan), F. kelliae Sakimura, Microcephalothrips abdominalis (D. L. Crawford), Scirtothrips sp., and Scolothrips pallidus (Beach); in the family Aeolothripidae: Stomatothrips crawfordi Stannard; and the family Phlaeothripidae: Adraneothrips decorus Hood, Aleurodothrips fasciapennis (Franklin), Eurythrips sp., Haplothrips gowdeyi (Franklin), Hoplandrothrips raptor (Crawford), Hoplothrips marginalis (Hood), Leptothrips cassiae Hood, L. macroocellatus Watson, and Nesothrips lativentris (Karny). F. bispinosa was the most abundant species comprising 84 to 99% of the thrips collected from emergence traps. F. kelliae was the second most abundant species with frequencies ranging from 3 to 12% in Lee and Hendry counties. No propupal or pupal stages of Frankliniella spp. were recovered from ground traps placed beneath the dripline of navel orange trees during flowering cycles at either location in southwest Florida. Only first and second instars and adults of F. bispinosa were collected from the ground traps.

Abstract:
Representing Black feminisms of the so-called, “First Wave era of American feminism,” forgotten icon Henrietta Crawford impacted Black political representation in southern New Jersey during the post-Civil War decades. As a noted evangelist, universal suffragist, Black community organizer, Civil Rights activist, homemaker, and intergenerational caregiver for minor dependents, Crawford crafted an intersectional legacy worthy of commemorative re-remembrance. Collectively, scattered bits and pieces of information recorded over the past eighty years in newspapers and in recent scholarly accounts offer an incoherent combination of disparate hints at Henrietta’s historical significance. Buttressed, however, by historical insight, contemporary newspaper accounts, Civil War pension file records, real estate deed transactions, federal and state census records, vital statistics data, the evidentiary record sheds light on Crawford’s important role in the operation of historically significant Mt. Pisgah [U.A.M.E.] Church in Vineland and her associated development and implementation of important social justice initiatives. In 1948, a fifty-year commemorative notation about James and Henrietta Crawford’s 1898 departure from Vineland was published in the Daily Journal newspaper. Twenty-five years later “New Jersey Mother of the Year Award” recipient Rebecca Lassiter noted the Crawfords' important role in her life as foster parents. In year seventy-three since the Daily Journal’s acknowledgement, this essay conveys Henrietta Crawford’s legacy to students, scholars, and the general readership for current and future generations. As the present confluence of national political and economic crises resolves within an encapsulating global pandemic that is exacerbating socio-economic inequalities, Crawford’s life and record offers a critical example of faith-based social-justice activism and the seamless role of African American women in American history.

Abstract:
Background Crawford tube placement is commonly used to achieve patency of nasolacrimal ducts for epiphora secondary to nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The nasal passages of pediatric patients are narrower than adults, and the result is a relatively higher risk of intranasal complications (e.g., synechiae, bleeding) with Crawford tube placement. There is evidence that general anesthesia may negatively affect the neurocognitive function and behavioral development of children, which prompts efforts to decrease operation times for potential health benefits and also potentially to reduce health care costs. Analysis ofresearch reports supports the use of nasal endoscopy to reduce intranasal complications with Crawford tube placement; however, no publications currently address the effect of nasal endoscopy concurrent with Crawford tube placement on operative times on pediatric patients or the resulting effects on health care costs. Objective To determine the difference in procedure time and cost between Crawford tubes placed traditionally and those placed with endoscopic assistance in pediatric patients. Methods A chart review was performed from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2016 for cases using CPT codes 68815 or 31231. Within this group of patients, the patient in whom nasal endoscopy was performed were placed in the “endoscopic” group and the patients without endoscopy were placed in the “traditional” group. Procedure times were noted, and the t-test was performed to examine for any statistically significant difference in operative times. Estimates of anesthesia cost savings were made. We identified 24 patients in the traditional group and 7 patients in the endoscopic group. Results The average operative time for the traditional group was 27.3 minutes compared with 14.0 minutes for the endoscopic group (p = 0.02). The cost comparison data revealed no significant difference with the traditional group averaging $9369 per procedure and the endoscopic group averaging $8891 (p = 0.51). Conclusion An endoscopically assisted Crawford tube placement resulted in patients who had less time under general anesthesia compared with the traditional technique at no difference in cost.
