Abstract:
People rely on off-the-shelf commercial single-user software systems in their daily lives and work to perform single-user tasks. People also need groupware systems to perform collaborative or group tasks. The goal of this thesis work is to develop innovative techniques for building computer applications that combine conventional single-user functionalities with advanced collaboration capabilities to effectively support people's individual and group work. This thesis work contributes an innovative Transparent Adaptation (TA) approach and associated supporting techniques that can be used to convert existing or new single-user applications into real-time multi-user collaborative versions without changing their source code. The transparently adapted collaborative systems not only support unconstrained collaboration and other collaboration features that were previously seen only in advanced groupware research prototypes, but also maintain the conventional functionalities and interface features that were previously seen only in commercial off-the-shelf single-user applications. Major technical contributions of the TA approach include techniques for adapting the single-user application programming interface to the data and operation models of the underlying generic collaboration technique and a generic system architecture for collaborative systems. The Operation Transformation (OT) technique has been chosen as the underlying collaboration technique for the TA approach due to its capability of supporting unconstrained collaboration and application independence. This thesis work has also made important contributions to OT by extending OT from supporting only collaborative plain text editing to supporting collaboration on complex data structures and comprehensive functionalities. To support the adaptation of complex data and operation models in a range of applications, this thesis work has contributed a package of advanced adaptation techniques for collaborative table editing and graphic object grouping. These techniques have not only increased the capability of TA, but have also advanced the state-of-the-art of collaborative editing techniques. To facilitate natural and smooth collaboration, this thesis work has contributed a multi-functional workspace awareness framework which is able to reduce the effort for developing workspace awareness features, and to be extended to support new workspace awareness features. Most importantly, this framework is able to deliver correct and precise workspace awareness information in the face of dynamic content and view changes in TA-based systems, which is an innovative feature unavailable in existing techniques. The TA approach and supporting techniques were developed and tested in the process of transparently converting two commercial off-the-shelf single-user applications - Microsoft Word and PowerPoint - into real-time collaborative applications, called CoWord and CoPowerPoint, respectively. CoWord and CoPowerPoint not only retain the functionalities and the 'look-and-feel' of their single-user counterparts, but also provide advanced multi-user collaboration capabilities for supporting multiple interaction paradigms, ranging from concurrent and free interaction to sequential and synchronized interaction, and for supporting detailed workspace awareness, including multi-user tele-pointers and radar views. The TA-based collaborative system architecture and the generic collaboration engine software component developed from this work can be reused in adapting a wide range of single-user applications.

Abstract:
The novel, CONFESSIONS OF A COWBIRD, offers an irreverent look at family life within America's consumer culture. When the narrator, Asta Veridian, working mother, real estate broker and Vice-President of the Women in Business Association, meets Mattie Moreau, an eccentric young man who's fighting his own war against day care, the foundations of Asta's world are shaken. Although Asta and Mattie are fierce ideological opponents, their relationship escalates to a passionate level, and along the way, crimes are committed, families fall apart, suburbia is skewered, the depths of guilt are plumbed, capitalism is critiqued, sensuality and spirituality collide and unite. Underlying the action in this tragicomic, quasi-epistolary novel is the tension between self-realization and self-sacrifice, which rises to the surface when Asta realizes she may have to destroy Mattie to save her relationship with her children.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on material from two sources : the drama, criticism and autobiography of Noel Coward (1899-1973), and the manuscript collection of the Lord Chamberlain's correspondence files on play censorship (1900-1968), currently held at the British Library. The critique proposes a common advocacy of anti-realist representation for the British public stage, particularly during the interwar period, and relates this characteristic form to the possibility of value production. Chapter One associates anti-realism with power, economy and advantage, but from the diverse perspectives of Coward's satire and censorship policy. The discussion is topical, comparing Coward's critiques of artistic and socio-cultural value with censorship criteria, and the function of stage censorship by a Lord Chamberlain. Chapter Two regards only the censorship correspondence on plays banned between 1900 and 1930. Files are presented to show the sponsorship of unrealistic ideals and suppression of subjectively social realism, which might `become' value; also, peculiar areas of `special' permission, or 'extra' licence, produced by censorship reasoning. This provides an historicalpolitical precedent, against which the radical import of Coward's interwar plays is traced in Chanter Three. Finally, Chapter Four applies the critical findings from the interwar, Coward-Chamberlain comparison, to the contention between the Lord Chamberlain and the Royal Court Theatre in the mid-nineteen sixties, concentrating on specific methods and consequences of reclaiming realistic representation. Appendix One lists plays banned 1900-1968, according to the censorship collection; Appendix Two lists private productions mentioned in the files.

Abstract:

Crossbreeding has long been promoted as the preferred method of production for cow-calf producers. Unfortunately, crossbreeding can add complexity to maintain a consistent cowherd and can drive the need to purchase replacement females from outside the producer’s own herd. This has led some producers to pursue straightbreeding to provide their own supply of replacements and the opportunity to more narrowly select for individuals suited to a carcass quality grid marketing system. The subject of this thesis is a Red Angus based cowherd that breeds females to Red Angus sires in early parities. The same cowherd is bred to Simmental sires in later parities to produce a terminal F1 cross. It is the objective of this thesis to explore whether this operation’s straghtbred or crossbred calf crop provides an economic advantage to the other treatment. Mortality data were collected during pre-weaning for both steers and heifers. Mortality data were collected for steers during backgrounding and feedlot phases. Wean weights and feed conversion performance during the backgrounding phase was unavailable for use in this study. Feedlot and carcass data were captured for steers from both treatments. The straightbred treatment showed an advantage in carcass quality. The composite treatment showed a slight advantage in mortality cost during pre-weaning and feedlot phase, and a slight advantage in feed conversion and cost per pound of gain while in the feedlot. The composite treatment showed a significant disadvantage during the backgrounding phase. The primary advantage for the composite treatment was the difference in actual wean weights. This difference in wean weight carried over to a higher start weight during the feedlot phase. This was the driving factor in providing the composite group the economic advantage in this study and making it the more attractive production option.

Oliven, Rafael Campos. ""Thus conscience does make cowards of us all" : the construction of soliloquies in Shakespeare." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/116630.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims at analysing the appearance and construction of soliloquies in three major Shakespearean tragedies, Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello. The focus of the research lies on the relationship involving the plays and the concept of individual identity that originates at the dawn of the Modern Age. The research is grounded on Freudian psychoanalytical theory and on the analysis of language and discourse proposed by Michel Foucault. Soliloquies correspond to the inner dialogue that characters have with themselves when no one else is present and only the audience, or the reader, can hear or read them. Differently from the monologue, which is always addressed to one or more people present at the scene, soliloquies are usually witty, and express the inner speech and deepest thoughts and feelings of a character. This happens because with soliloquies there is no process of censorship, or the need to correspond to the expectation of other characters. My hypothesis is that soliloquies originate in and are related to the need of individuals to express themselves according to their own conscience, not only as members of a community who act and think publicly, as was the case in ancient times, or according to the religious precepts and strict moral codes of the Middle Ages. I hope that this work can contribute to illustrate the moment in which the concept of individuality starts to be put to use. Some of the themes discussed in the thesis address the questions of justice and ethics in face of disgrace, the origin of evil and how it is addressed. The themes are dealt with in the analysis of the dichotomies and stereotypes that operate in those Shakespearean tragedies. The language and content of the soliloquies will be analysed through a philosophical and psychoanalytical approach.

Full text
Abstract:
Populations of several riparian-obligate, neotropical migratory songbirds have declined in recent years, partly due to brood parasitism by brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater). In 1994 and 1995, 1 measured parasitism rates and nesting success of 4 riparian-obligate, neotropical migrants breeding in the lower Colorado River valley. Because vegetation characteristics of nest sites may influence cowbird parasitism and host nesting success, I also measured vegetation attributes associated with nest-site selection. Parasitism rates were 40-90%, and reproductive success was significantly lower in parasitized nests. Foliage cover may influence host nest-site selection and prevent cowbird nest discovery. The patchy distribution of native tree species may have aided cowbird nest discovery by providing elevated survey perches. Saltcedar (Tamarix ramosissima) was an important understory component providing foliage cover at nests. Understanding vegetation characteristics associated with host and cowbird nest-site selection should be useful in riparian restoration projects and cowbird control.

Perry, Caroline. Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040161.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is dedicated to Pontius Pilate’s figure and to his evolution in Western literature (French, English, and Spanish) from the 19th century. The study examines his role in literature under the light of Pierre Brunel’s mythocriticism, and analyzes how his portrayal developed over time. From his wake to his rise, Pontius Pilate becomes a real object of interest, a fictional subject on his own. This work concludes that he does not correspond to the actual definition of a myth. Rather, he has some aspects of it and even carries some mythemes of his own such as the symbolic gesture of washing his hands or his wife’s glowing presence. Lastly, if Pilate belongs to Jesus of Nazareth’s narrative format, he is then a mythical figure, and therefore his partial or even total rehabilitation must necessarily pass through the character’s political aspect. Modern writers seek for the man underneath the legend. Between Romanism and Christianity, modern time voices place Pilate against his own humanity

Abstract:
Brood parasitic birds lay eggs amongst the clutches of other species, which then assume all costs of parental care on their behalf. This thesis addresses several puzzles of avian brood parasitism, using field studies and theoretical modelling of the generalist parasite, the shiny cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) and select hosts in Argentina. Key findings and conclusions were: • High parasitism intensity in a host population can result in a cost to hosts of removing parasite eggs from their clutches, and so help to maintain host’s acceptance of parasite eggs in evolutionary equilibrium. The cost is to host egg survival: hosts that remove parasite eggs from the clutch increase the risk that their eggs are destroyed by subsequent parasites that visit the nest. • The principal benefit of mobbing as a front-line defence of hosts may be to reduce egg loss due to parasite attack, rather than prevent parasitism itself. • Differences in the acoustic structure of begging calls between parasites and their host’s young can be to the parasite’s advantage. Parents provisioned unparasitized broods more during broadcast at the nest of shiny cowbird calls than calls of their own species’ chicks, in both a common host and a non-host. The long tremulous quality of a cowbird’s call functions analogously to a rapid call rate, thereby exploiting a common provisioning rule of avian parents. • A trade-off for maximum growth in parasite nestlings will variously favour or not favour the evolution of nestmate-killing behaviour, depending on a parasite’s abilities, relative to host young, to solicit and attain provisions from host parents. Generalist parasites can encounter both sides of the trade-off in different hosts. Meanwhile, indirect fitness costs are unlikely to constrain the evolution of nestmate-killing in shiny cowbirds, as they rarely, if ever, share the nest with siblings.

Abstract:
Despite the broadening of the subject matter of English drama in its ???new wave??? period from the late nineteen fifties, it is striking to see how much of enduring mainstream English drama has a domestic focus. The purpose of this thesis is to provide the first full-length study of marriage on the English stage from 1930-1990. The thesis examines the way in which a number of important playwrights have fashioned drama from the conflict between the public, or institutional, functions of marriage and the private, or relational, functions of marriage. The thesis places this conflict into historical context. This will show that the conflict between the private and public aspects of marriage is not one of clearly opposed opposites but one that is made dynamic by significant social and legal changes to the status, function and conventions of marriage. The thesis also demonstrates that this conflict is further complicated by class considerations and by the particular circumstances of each marital partnership. From the wealth of material available, I have chosen to examine in detail the work of seven playwrights who have made significant contributions to domestic drama or domestic comedy. Playwrights have been selected because their plays gained a strong audience on first performance and because, through numerous revivals and through publication of scripts, they have earned an enduring place in English drama. John Osborne???s Look Back in Anger, which in 1956, ushered in the ???new wave???, is pivotal play for discussion. The previous generation is represented by Noel Coward, J. B. Priestley and Terence Rattigan. The ???new wave??? and its aftermath are represented by Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard and, finally Alan Ayckbourn. Despite a wide variety of approaches to the topic of marriage, these writers tend to assume a middle class audience and to follow or adapt the traditions of realism or comedy of manners. This thesis argues that despite real, even radical, changes to marriage, to accepted sexual practices and to the status of women in the sixty years under discussion, the mainstream theatre has tended to be conservative in its presentation of marital and sexual matters, especially in continuing to reinscribe a public/private opposition determined by gender.

Abstract:

Grassland birds are declining throughout their native range. The Flint Hills of eastern Kansas and Oklahoma contain large tracts of tallgrass prairie, but intensification of agricultural practices may be contributing to ongoing population declines. Common rangeland management practices include annual burning coupled with heavy grazing by cattle. This system, known as intensive early stocking and burning, promotes homogeneous utilization of forage by cattle but may not provide habitat for some grassland bird species. Patch-burn grazing is an alternative management system that aims to restore heterogeneity on rangelands by recreating the fire-grazing interaction that would have historically occurred throughout the Great Plains. From 2011-2013, we examined responses of grassland birds to traditional rangeland management and patch-burn grazing by conducting vegetation surveys, line transect surveys, and nest monitoring on privately-owned pastures in Chase County and Greenwood County, Kansas. Vegetative heterogeneity was higher on patch-burned pastures, with unburned patches having higher visual obstruction and less bare ground. Densities of grassland birds differed by species and among habitat strata. Unburned patches on patch-burned pastures were associated with increased densities of Dickcissels (Spiza americana), Eastern Meadowlarks (Sturnella magna) and Grasshopper Sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum). Henslow’s Sparrows (A. henslowii) were only detected on patch-burned pastures. Nest survival of grassland songbirds was similar among management systems but varied by year. Probability of nest parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) varied among years and between treatments for Dickcissels and Grasshopper Sparrows, with overall lower rates on burned areas and during drought years. For Dickcissels and Grasshopper Sparrows, there was a significant reduction in host clutch size between parasitized versus unparasitized nests. Overall, nest survival of grassland songbirds in managed rangelands was low. Patch-burn grazing improved rangeland conditions and provided habitat for more species of birds, but did not increase nest survival. Drought conditions in 2012 and 2013 may have influenced the results of this study, as many landowners were unable to burn as planned. Further study is needed to determine underlying factors driving variation in nest success and parasitism rates for grassland birds, particularly on private lands which make up the vast majority of remnant tallgrass prairies.

Rasmussen, Justin Lee. "Investigations of evolutionary arms races and host diversity in avian brood parasite systems." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Biological Sciences, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8959.

Abstract:
Obligate brood parasites rely solely on other species, the hosts, to incubate their eggs and raise their offspring, which often reduces the host’s reproductive output. This reproductive cost has led to the evolution of anti-parasite adaptations among hosts, which in turn, has led to better trickery by parasites, a process termed an evolutionary arms race. The objective of this thesis was to investigate host-parasite coevolutionary arms races to address questions of host-use diversity. Host diversity varies dramatically among brood-parasitic species, but reasons for variations in host-use among brood parasites are not well understood. In Chapter 2, I address questions on host diversity specifically, whereas I address questions about coevolutionary interaction between hosts and parasites in Chapters 3, 4 and 5 using two host-parasite systems, one in New Zealand and one in North America. Chapter 2 investigates if host diversity is constrained by aggressive nest defence behaviour. I compared the nest defence behaviour of the exclusive host of the shining cuckoo Chrysococcyx lucidus lucidus on the main islands of New Zealand, the grey warbler Gerygone igata, to two other potentially suitable hosts that are not currently parasitised, the fantail Rhipidura fuliginosa and the silvereye Zosterops lateralis. The results suggest that grey warblers are as aggressive as fantails and silvereyes towards shining cuckoos at the nest and thus, host specialisation in shining cuckoos in New Zealand, at least, does not appear to be the result of nest-defence constraints imposed by potential but unused host species. Chapter 3 investigates if red-winged blackbirds Agelaius phoeniceus, a species that typically accepts the eggs of parasites, recognises, as indicated by changes in incubation behaviour, when they have been parasitised by brown-headed cowbirds Molothrus ater. Recognition without rejection suggests that rejection may be context-dependent but the results suggest that red-winged blackbirds do not recognise when their nests have been parasitised by brown-headed cowbirds, at least at the egg stage. This study was the first to investigate if hosts that almost invariably accept the eggs of parasites recognise when they have been parasitised. Chapter 4 investigated the possibility of coevolutionary arms races occurring through olfactory channels in contrast to earlier work that focussed only on visual and auditory cues. Recent research has revealed that olfactory abilities in birds are more common than previously thought. Uropygial gland secretions are posited to be a key source of avian body odour and its composition has been found to vary among species and individuals as well as between the sexes. I compared gas-chromatography (GC-FID) traces of shining cuckoo preen wax to the GC-FID traces of the grey warbler, the only host of the shining cuckoo in mainland New Zealand, as well as the preen wax of seven other species for evidence of mimicry. Preliminary results suggest there is evidence for mimicry and the potential for odour-based nestling discrimination in grey warblers. Further tests recording the response of grey warblers to odour-manipulated nestlings are necessary. Finally, in Chapter 5, I investigated the response of the song thrush Turdus philomelos, a species that rejects the eggs of the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus and conspecifics at intermediate and low frequencies, respectively, to nest-odour manipulations using the preen wax of conspecifics and heterospecifics. The results suggest song thrush do not use odour to assess the risk of parasitism at least as indicated in terms of changes in incubation behaviour. Investigations of the role of olfaction in avian brood parasite systems can provide a better understanding of brood-parasite coevolution. Only by considering all channels of communication can we be sure to completely understand the coevolutionary dynamics between brood parasites and their hosts.

Abstract:
A modern agricultural production must respond to increasing demands in terms of environmental protection, reduction of production costs and an increased demand for high quality, safe and healthy products. In such conditions, one of the responses of agricultural producers to the challenges posed is also cultivation of winter cover crops, because they can provide different advantages in agricultural production in terms of ecology and production. Therefore, the aim of the research is to examine which plant species can be cultivated as winter cover crops in our agroecological conditions, their impact on the soil, the benefits of their application as animal feed or green fertilizer, and the impact they have on the subsequent crop. The field experiment was conducted on three locations using the  random block design with replications. The research was carried out in two production cycles, from October 2011, when the winter cover crops were sown, to September 2013, when corn was reaped for silage. Herbaceous species used for winter cover crops are hairy vetch (Vicia vilosa Roth., variety NS-Sirmium), winter triticale (x Triticosecale Wittm. Ex A. Camus, Odyssey variety) and their mixture. In addition to variants with winter cover crops, variants with fertilization with mineral nitrogen according to the N-min method up to 120 kg/ha of nitrogen (N1) and up to 160 kg/ha of nitrogen (N2), as well as a control, are included in the field experiment. Winter cover crops sown in the first block were used for fodder, while the winter cover crops sown in the second block were ploughed. Depending on  weather conditions of the tested plant species and their mixture grown as winter cover crops, they can achieve high yields. Their ploughing can significantly improve the content of mineral nitrogen in soil and provide a significant increase in voluminous fodder production in farms. The dynamics of mineral nitrogen in soil is highly dependent on winter cover crops and the nitrogen content is the lowest after their harvest. Out of the tested species, the highest  nitrogen uptake was by triticale, then winter forage mix and the smallest by winter vetch. In the period from sowing to harvest of silage corn, thecontent of mineral nitrogen in soil increases with all treatments. The content of mineral nitrogen at the end of the vegetation is higher with treatments where the green mass of the cover crops were taken away from the plot. However, the remaining quantity of nitrogen (ARNS) after corn harvest was, statistically speaking, significantly higher in treatments where winter cover crops were ploughed, from the treatment where they were taken away from the plot and ranges from 66 to 150 kg N ha-1; the largest nitrogen content was measured after winter forage mix. The green mass yields of corn in subsequent sowing after winter cover crops are lower compared to fertilized variants and the control and range from 6.6 t ha-1 to 22 t ha-1, while the quality of silage meets the energy potential, as well as the content of proteins and minerals for quality livestock feed on farms.

Cohen, Sagi. "Homo Perfidus: An Antipathology of the Coward's Betrayal." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37378.

Full text
Abstract:
Homo Perfidus: An Antipathology of the Coward’s Betrayal identifies and speaks to an ethical and methodological lacuna in western metaphysics with regards to betrayal. Following Levinas’ call for an ‘Ethics as first philosophy,’ my research question is: ‘How can I think of betrayal responsibly?’ I offer to approach betrayal as an accusation, one that comports an excessive hatred towards the identified ‘traitor.’ Suspending its moral vilification, I construct a broadly phenomenological method – which I call ‘antipathology’ – that proposes to take this hatred seriously; not as the sign of a lack to be filled or purloined with shame, but of a communication to respond-to. Tracking western thought’s metaphysical engagements – mainly via Kant, Hegel and Heidegger – my antipathology witnesses an exceedingly systematic muting of this hatred. Such a principled effacement of hatred’s signs is the very mechanism by which western thought “de-problematizes” betrayal, appropriating its otherness for its own metaphysical ends. To those ends, betrayal ceases to be an event and becomes its ‘prefiguration,’ a twist on an assumed temporal and causal progression. I focus here on the coward’s betrayal, broadly defined as secession from a principle – seen to give cohesion and legitimacy to a ‘Whole’ – of which this traitor was nevertheless an integral part until the event of her betrayal. Antipathology follows young Hegel’s ‘antisemitic’ association of the “Jewish spirit” with a principle of alienation and secession, a vain and hateful self-assertion that only “Christian spirit” can successfully negate, turning this drive for hateful dissociation to one of loving association (with progressively diminishing “remainders”). Reading modern philosophy’s treatment of the skeptic I show how her doubt can be appropriated and turned to ‘Truth’ in the same way that the Jews’ hateful and cowardly betrayal can be turned to absolute faith/love; what Hegel calls “negating the negation.” Both ‘Jew’ and ‘Skeptic’ here become antibodies in a process through which a ‘Whole’ slowly becomes immune, or insensitive to, the threat of future interruptions: outside of this process – offering no ‘Whole’ of their own – their respective interruptions are seen as expressions of vanity, of a ‘self’ that breaks-away from the bonds of belonging and love in a fit of gratuitous hatred and doubt; all in the name of a “who knows what” that for Hegel, as well as for Kant and Heidegger, amounts to precisely ‘Nothing.’ I conclude by a performative ‘antipathological’ reading of Dante’s Inferno alongside Kafka’s In the Penal Colony: while Dante, as a faithful ‘Christian’ witness to Divine Justice (Hell), desires to internalize the Truth of God, progressively renouncing the vain resistances of a ‘self’ not yet fully reconciled to God’s Being (the theological ‘Pleroma’ of the ‘Whole’), Kafka’s nameless traveler, as a skeptical ‘coward-witness,’ not only remains “unconverted” but also causes the violence that is implicit in the Dante-esque ‘progression’ to show itself. ‘Faith’ is here shown as progression from one betrayal-event to another, all of which require the believer to sacrifice another part of their resistance to the demands of the ‘Whole’ until no such resistance remains (or, at least, felt/expressed). Similarly, the Dante that begins his journey weeping for the suffering of Hell’s sinners, ends up kicking one of them in the face; deliberately, yet without hatred, as if it were a mere rock on the road. The coward’s betrayal consists in her ‘vain witness’ to time as rupture, as event, as the opening that puts her previous beliefs and attachments in radical question. The hatred towards the coward and the accusation of ‘traitor’ mark this question as a threat to the ‘Whole;’ a mark that, approached antipathologically, can open a discourse concerning the violence (and self-violence) that was and is necessary to keep the ‘Whole,’ through a narrated causal-historical time, from breaking apart. Painful and dangerous, this approach is, nonetheless, the only way to keep a system that abolished all ‘positions to complain’ from being equated with a ‘wholly just’ system; or to keep a knowledge-machine that successfully tames all doubts from being absolved.

Abstract:

Geeves, Guy William, and not available. "Aggregate Breakdown and Soil Surface Sealing under Rainfall." The Australian National University, 1997. http://thesis.anu.edu.au./public/adt-ANU20010702.142014.

Full text
Abstract:
Aggregate breakdown is an important process controlling the availability of fine soil material necessary for structural sealing of soil surfaces under rainfall. It may be caused by slaking resulting from rapid soil wetting and by physical dispersion resulting from direct and indirect energetic raindrop impacts. Relationships have been proposed by others predicting steady infiltration rate and saturated hydraulic conductivity from final aggregate size following high energy rainfall on initially dry, uncovered soil surfaces. Under these extreme conditions, both rapid wetting and energetic raindrop impact result in maximum aggregate breakdown and surface sealing. Knowledge of the relative importance of these two agents under less severe conditions and knowledge of how increased aggregate stability due to conservative soil management may ameliorate them should improve prediction and management of aggregate breakdown and surface sealing. ¶ This study has isolated and quantified effects of rapid soil wetting and energetic raindrop impact on aggregate breakdown and surface sealing. Simulated rainfall was applied to re-packed soils from differing tillage treatments on light textured soils from near Cowra and Condobolin in New South Wales, Australia. Aggregate breakdown was assessed using aggregate size distribution, determined by wet sieving and summarised by a range of statistics. The degree of breakdown was assessed after 66 mm of simulated rainfall whilst the rate of change in aggregate size distribution was assessed by sampling after 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 mm. The degree of surface sealing was assessed using final surface hydraulic conductivity after 66 mm rainfall calculated from inferred infiltration and measured sub-seal soil water potential. The rate of surface sealing was assessed prior to ponding using cumulative rainfall volume at ponding and throughout the post-ponding phase by decline in surface hydraulic conductivity as a function of cumulative rainfall kinetic energy. Two levels of raindrop kinetic energy flux and three wetting treatments were used to isolate effects of these agents of aggregate breakdown and surface sealing. ¶ Significant surface aggregate breakdown was observed when either rapid soil wetting or highly energetic raindrop impact were allowed to occur. The majority of the data suggest a negative interaction between the two agents. When soil was initially dry rapid soil wetting was the dominant agent causing rapid aggregate breakdown, generally within the first 5 mm of rainfall. When rapid soil wetting was prevented by tension pre-wetting, energetic raindrop impact was the dominant agent and was able to cause aggregate breakdown of an almost equivalent degree. This breakdown occurred over a period lasting for up to 30 mm of rainfall. In contrast, the rate and degree of surface sealing were influenced primarily by raindrop kinetic energy with highly energetic impact leading to significant surface sealing, irrespective of soil wetting. For the soils studied, it was concluded that structural sealing of surface soil, could be significantly reduced by protecting the soil surface from energetic raindrop impact but that prevention of surface aggregate breakdown required amelioration of both processes. ¶ In addition to the negative interaction referred to above, a positive interaction was observed whereby energetic raindrop impact occurring concurrently with rapid soil wetting caused a greater degree of aggregate breakdown and a greater degree of surface sealing than energetic raindrop impact occurring subsequent to rapid soil wetting. The effect on surface sealing may be explained by the effect of lower sub-seal water potential that necessarily results from initially dry soil condition required for concurrent rapid wetting. However, the effect on aggregate breakdown remains unexplained. ¶ Notwithstanding the above, permeability was reduced under high kinetic energy rainfall even when soil wetting was reduced to very slow rates by tension pre-wetting. Likewise, surface sealing did occur under low kinetic energy rainfall for the least stable soil following rapid soil wetting. It was concluded that threshold soil wetting rates and threshold rainfall energy levels, proposed by others, are either not applicable to these soils or are negligible. ¶ The rate and degree of aggregate breakdown was also dependent on the soil with the Cowra soil being more stable than the Condobolin soil. Greater aggregate stability brought about by conservative tillage treatments at both soil locations retarded and reduced surface sealing. Unvalidated simulation modelling was used to illustrate possible effects for the soil water balance. In contrast to the conclusions of Loch (1994b), that were based on soils throughout eastern Queensland, the soil water balance simulations predicted that the residual benefits in ameliorating surface sealing resulting from improved aggregate stability could significantly reduce point runoff under the lower intensity winter rainfalls experienced in southern New South Wales. ¶ Limited testing with Condobolin soil following tension pre-wetting showed that rainfall intensity, varying over the range from 16.5 to 66 mm h-1, had little effect on the decline in surface hydraulic conductivity as a function of cumulative rainfall kinetic energy. This contrasts with greater seal permeability under higher rainfall intensities observed by Romkens et al. (1985) and others. It is proposed that an alternative explanation exists for the observations of Romkens et al. based on reduction in seal permeability due to lower sub-seal water potential under lower intensity rainfall. ¶ Post-ponding reduction in K[subscript sat] under high kinetic energy rainfall exhibited exponential decline as a function of cumulative raindrop kinetic energy as proposed by Moore (1981b). However, inferred rates of decline prior to ponding were more rapid than measured post-ponding rates suggesting that infiltration models using only a single exponential rate of surface K[subscript sat] decline based on post-ponding measurements may be in error. Potential for error is greatest at early times for loose soil that is highly susceptible to sealing. ¶ Pre-ponding decline in surface aggregation was also relatively more rapid than post-ponding decline. This discrepancy was evident irrespective of soil pre-wetting. From this it was concluded that the more rapid initial aggregate breakdown and surface sealing was due, at least in part, to processes other than aggregate slaking due to rapid soil wetting. An explanation has been proposed as follows. Raindrops initially fall on aggregates that have not been subjected to rainfall and therefore each drop has the capacity to cause greater aggregate breakdown than subsequent raindrops that fall on aggregates or soil fragments that have been strong enough to survive preceding rainfall impacts. Such a mechanism could provide an alternative explanation of the findings of Baumhardt et al. (1991) who found that less cumulative raindrop kinetic energy was necessary to achieve a given reduction in surface conductance when the cumulative energy was supplied through lower energy drops. ¶ Relationships predicting rates of surface sealing using aggregate breakdown under rainfall and aggregate stability were evaluated. Post-ponding infiltration rate and surface K[subscript sat] were related to aggregate size by exponential functions. The proportion of surface aggregates less than 0.125 mm in diameter provided slightly more consistent relationships. Parameters of fitted relationships differed among wetting pre-treatments suggesting that the influence of sub-seal water potential on surface K[subscript sat] must be considered whenever such relationships are developed or applied. Aggregate stability determined by wet sieving was related to rainfall volume required for ponding, final K[subscript sat] and final aggregate size but only for initially dry soil suggesting that such relationships may be unique to the rainfall, soils and flow conditions used to develop them. ¶ This study has established the relative importance of rapid soil wetting and energetic raindrop impact in both aggregate breakdown and surface sealing over a range of antecedent soil water and rainfall conditions. It has quantified the effectiveness of culturally induced aggregate stability in ameliorating effects of these two important agents and illustrated the potentially significant consequences for the soil water balance. It has quantified temporal patterns of surface sealing and aggregate breakdown and proposed an alternative mechanism explaining more rapid aggregate breakdown during the initial stages of rainfall. It has identified possible explanations for effects of rainfall intensity on surface sealing observed in other studies. It has also partially evaluated a mechanism proposed to explain important effects of subseal water potential on seal permeability found in this and other studies. These significant findings have been used with the findings of other studies to amend the conceptual model proposed by Le Bissonnias (1990). The amended model gives a more complete description of the relationships between parameters and processes determining aggregate breakdown and structural surface sealing under rainfall.

This work focuses on the proposal and validation of control strategies for simultaneous regulation of voltage and frequency in isolated Microgrid, voltage harmonics compensation in the common coupling point and the reactive power of cooperation between the different inverters installed in the Microgrid (MG). The used control technique is the modified generalized Droop control to meet the design needs (energy flow operation trafficked in MG), maintaining the balance between generation and consumption with rapid, safe, efficient and stable. In this scenario, six control strategies have been proposed and validated for different scenarios tests (linear and nonlinear loads) and topologies MG (1 bar, 3 bars, 5 bars, 11 bars and 14 bars) which are: conventional GDC, ANFIS GDC, GDC Fuzzy Adaptive GDC, GDC and PI Fuzzy Cooperative with virtual impedance. The methodology used consisted of the following steps: A) literature review; B) choice of MG tests (IEEE standard); C) modeling and simulation of the constituent parts of an isolated MG; D) design of the control strategies used in the MG operation; E) Validation of control strategies; F) Technical discussion of the simulation results and G) Elaboration of technical documents. Faced with the control strategies implemented, the GDC Adaptive controller showed the best dynamic performance in closed loop (fast response time, small fluctuations of voltage and frequency, low sensitivity to fluctuations in load and energy source, making the control robustness and stable). When assisted by internal loops, it achieves reactive power cooperation and harmonic compensation in the face of apparent power fluctuations in both consumption and generation. The proposed solutions for simultaneous regulation of voltage and frequency in isolated MG, harmonic voltage compensation in the PCC and reactive power sharing between the connected inverters in the MG were efficient when evaluated in several test scenarios and for several MG topologies in terms of stable MG operation, maintaining the balance between generation and consumption, responding quickly to the operational variations, load disturbances and nonlinearities of the islanded MG.

The main purpose of the study was to investigate the role of Big Five personality dimensions (Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Openness to Experience, Neuroticism and Agreeableness) and justice perceptions (procedural, distributive, informational and interactional justice) on social loafing in a field setting. Another purpose was to explore potential moderation effects of personality and justice dimensions on social loafing. Data was gathered both from employees and their supervisors working in three leading software companies in Ankara, Turkey. The study was conducted in two phases. In the pilot study, social loafing and perceived coworker social loafing scales were developed. Task visibility scale was adapted to Turkish. The internal consistency reliabilities of the scales were tested by a pilot study with a sample of 53 employees. In the main study, hypothesis and potential moderation effects were tested by gathering data from 156 participants. Results supported only two hypotheses proposing positive relations between extraversion &
social loafing and neuroticism &
social loafing. Investigating potential moderators, distributive justice turned out to be moderator on the relation between extraversion and social loafing. Moreover, conscientiousness had moderation effect on the relation between informational justice and social loafing. The results were discussed along with practical implications, limitations of the study and future directions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyze a limited number of picture books from two eras and examine how non-verbal portrayed in the picture, and if it is portrayed differently in the two epochs. I will focus in more detail on the conflicts between children, conflicts between educators and children and teachers' attitudes in the conflict and their way of dealing with them. The method I use in this study is a qualitative literature analysis which I assume Nicholas Eve (2000) book on picture analysis. Together with the relevant literature and Howard Gardners theory of the seven intelligences with a focus on the bodily, I have come to the result that all books regardless of era through body language in the books convey to preschool is something fun and interesting. The biggest difference between the books from the different time epochs was that in the older books appeared only that you could not argue with adults with a clear didactic undertone. In the books from the 2000's figure was the body language illustrated in such a way that the reader understands that the children are allowed to have more influence and not necessarily need to accept the opinions and wishes of the adults, since they are entitled to their own opinion and to have their own free will.

Abstract:
This thesis is a broadly chronological study of representations of Japan and the Japanese in Australian novels, stories and memoirs from the late nineteenth century to the twenty-first century. Adopting Edward Said???s Orientalist notion of the `Other???, it attempts to elaborate patterns in which Australian authors describe and evaluate the Japanese. As well as examining these patterns of representation, this thesis outlines the course of their development and change over the years, how they relate to the context in which they occur, and how they contribute to the formation of wider Australian views on Japan and the Japanese. The thesis considers the role of certain Australian authors in formulating images and ideas of the Japanese ???Other???. These authors, ranging from fiction writers to journalists, scholars and war memoirists, act as observers, interpreters, translators, and sometimes ???traitors??? in their cross-cultural interactions. The thesis includes work from within and outside ???mainstream??? writings, thus expanding the contexts of Australian literary history. The major ???periods??? of Australian literature discussed in this thesis include: the 1880s to World War II; the Pacific War; the post-war period; and the multicultural period (1980s to 2000). While a comprehensive examination of available literature reveals the powerful and continuing influence of the Pacific War, images of ???the stranger???, ???the enemy??? and later ???the ally??? or ???partner??? are shown to vary according to authors, situations and wider international relations. This thesis also examines gender issues, which are often brought into sharp relief in cross-cultural representations. While typical East-West power-relationships are reflected in gender relations, more complex approaches are also taken by some authors. This thesis argues that, while certain patterns recur, such as versions of the ???Cho-Cho-San??? or ???Madame Butterfly??? story, Japan-related works have given some Australian authors, especially women, opportunities to reveal more ???liberated??? viewpoints than seemed possible in their own cultural context. As the first extensive study of Japan in Australian literary consciousness, this thesis brings to the surface many neglected texts. It shows a pattern of changing interests and interactions between two nations whose economic interactions have usually been explored more deeply than their literary and cultural relations.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is a definition of Bucolic poetry. Nowadays it can be analized as a title (Bucolics) or as a poetry genre (bucolic poetry). The choice which is made between these two categories has consequences on the way bucolic poetry is theorised. I try to demonstrate that the genre was invented out of the title : at first, a bucolic poem was no more than a poem included in collection entitled Βουκολικά. At the end of Antiquity this title had been changed into Idylls in the Greek-speaking World and into Eglogues in the Latin-speaking world because the definition has changed. « Bucolicity » is based not on the cowherd, but on a scenario which is repeated from a poem to another : two people meet, a song is sung, and the people leave each other. Any poetic genre could be included in the song which is sung, so I distinguish the bucolic poem from the inserted song which lies inside. I then compare Theocritus to Herodas and Sophron because some bucolic poems are nowadays called « urban mimes ». The name of this categorie is modern, so it shows how new definitions (and new termes) are constantly proposed for poetic genres

Abstract:

Abstract:
The idea for this study emerged from objective 8, defined by the twenty thirty Agenda, defined by the UN, which indicates an action plan agenda for global prosperity and poverty eradication. This objective defines actions aimed at decent work and economic growth. As entrepreneurship is one of the ways of leveraging both the job offer and economic leverage, we chose to carry out this research. In order to narrow the study, we chose to focus specifically on developing instruments and innovation related policies, due to its high direct social impact power at national and international level.Considering that public policies are essential for the development of a solid and prosperous network of entrepreneurs, this study chose, based on the realization of a case study supported by a document collection and interviews, to analyze the public policies adopted in different dimensions and adopted in the city of Coimbra, located in Portugal, having direct action on development instruments, understood here as a Business Incubator, Technology Park and Cowork. Here, we present a description of the numerous existent instruments and mechanisms for the entrepreneurship promotion, and we do a small evaluation of the concrete actions associated, knowing the way they are perceived by some of the main authors. In conclusion of this study, we present a portrait of entrepreneurship and innovation in the city of Coimbra and its development reality, so that recommendations can be taken from there in the development instruments here analyzed.

Abstract:
This dissertation primary goal is to describe the present state, of the Portuguese Coworking reality. Backing it up with a theoretical framework regarding themes like entrepreneurship and organizational culture, this research will approach the founder of the Coworking Space as an entrepreneur, in order to see if his or hers motivations will reflect on the organizational culture of the space. To do that, 40 spaces were visited, located in different areas of the country, and interviews were conducted with the founders/entrepreneurs or community managers of each space. This sample is relevant because it represents approximately 50% of the Coworking Spaces located in Portugal, and the methodology used for this matter was content analysis. This way of analysing qualitative data allowed for the elaboration of categories, theoretically supported, which represent the tendencies of management practices in a Portuguese Coworking Space. After finding this categories, the data will be crossed so we can find out if the entrepreneur´s motivation will reflect, or not, on the organizational culture of these spaces. By the end there will be some practical implications which are relevant to the Coworking business, as well as some limitations to this study and future research suggestions.

Abstract:
Trabalho de Projeto
A origem do projeto CABe!
The origin of project CABe! Cowork - Atelier – Bar is due to the little divulgation of ateliers, as working spaces that can be rented. This fact urged to develop a workspace concept that would foster a relationship between artists from various fields and also promote the contact with business reality. To achieve that, this project suggests applying an organizational / procedural methodology and embracing the philosophy of cowork spaces - a concept that emerged in 2005. In order to understand the atelier and the cowork in the users' perspective and also the project itself, a literature review, a feasibility analysis and surveys directed to a sample of artists and coworkers who work in Lisbon were conducted. CABe! also aims to include a cafe / bar, encompassing a wider audience and stimulating both social integration and the access of society to this kind of spaces. The present study not only highlights the ambivalence between atelier and cowork - in terms of their historical context - but also the affinity they have as shared workspaces, in order to find a theoretical and possibly practical complementarity between these two concepts. The study shows that the atelier, compared to the cowork, has less effective communication channels. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the methods used at cowork spaces can be beneficial when applied to the management of art spaces.

Abstract:
The thesis offers explanation for the maintenance of local power relations in a rural community in terms of ideologies and the ways in which they are reflected, responded to and reconstructed in and around a local political system. It does so by developing concepts useful to the study of power processes and using them in analysis of observation of local politics and the ideological climate in which politics are enacted. A history of the locality and discussion of institutional apparatuses of local government move analysis towards political processes, in particular those processes in which the content of politics becomes constrained. That constraint is accounted for in terms of the values and beliefs of local people and their politicians, rather than conscious and intentional individual action. The thesis concludes that beliefs about the nature of local politics and the locality itself structure local politics in such a way that they favour farmers and business people over other identifiable groups.

In this thesis, we propose an architecture binding full system simulation and hardware-software synchronization profiling using QEMU and CoWare based on electronic system level design. We can use it not only to do hardware-software co-design but also to analyze the hardware-software integration which can affect the system performance greatly. Due to the different simulation accuracy and simulator between CoWare and QEMU in our full system simulation platform, we can hardly realize the timing information among CPU and other peripherals simulated in CoWare. In order to conquer this problem, we develop a synchronization method and apply it to full system simulation. It can not only keep the simulation speed but also provide the simple timing information between CPU and the hardware under developing. We use ARM embedded system as our simulation environment and design the synchronizer to fetch the timing information between the hardware modules modeled in CoWare and the software system run in QEMU. And then we can use the information to achieve synchronization profiling for performance evaluation of the specific hardware-software partition. We then can consider whether to redo the hardware-software partition according to the performance results.
