Abstract:

Occupant une place particulière au sein de la classe ouvrière parisienne, les couturières fascinent de nombreux philanthropes et journalistes qui multiplient les publications, modelant ainsi l’image d’une ouvrière parfaite telle qu’ils la fantasment. Le temps libre de la couturière constitue une partie importante des productions de ces pygmalions masculins. Le chant est vu comme un moyen d’infuser les valeurs républicaines et de redresser moralement l’ouvrière. Au tout début du xx e siècle, certaines œuvres offrent une éducation artistique gratuite aux jeunes couturières parisiennes, utilisant des méthodes rappelant l’éducation par le chant à l’école. Malgré ces tentatives des réformateurs d’imposer un bon loisir, les ouvrières varient dans leurs pratiques chansonnières entre soumission, rébellion et parfois subversion. Cet article part à la recherche de leur voix singulière sur le chemin de l’émancipation.

Abstract:

Ce texte porte sur la pratique d’une couturière qui a tenu son journal de la période de la Première Guerre mondiale jusqu’à la fin des années 1940. Ce document couvre trente-cinq années relatées presque sans interruptions, pondérées par le cycle saisonnier d’activités quotidiennes et périodiques, de rencontres familiales, d’événements de la vie privée et d’expressions de la sociabilité dans un large réseau. Tout en apprenant beaucoup sur la vie quotidienne et l’activité de couturière à cette époque, ce journal personnel permet d’aborder la confection domestique du point de vue de la pratique féminine privée et semi- professionnelle et de poursuivre nos études sur la mode en région. La production évoquée s’inscrit dans un contexte de modifications nombreuses des pièces de costume existantes, réparation, transformation, enrichissement, remodelage. On a recours à la couturière pour tous types de vêtements et l’on fait appel à elle pour les occasions spéciales telles que les noces et les funérailles. Malgré les pratiques d’une économie de récupération, le journal de cette couturière révèle une cohabitation des lieux d’approvisionnements et par eux la multiplication des possibilités et la diversité des sources d’influences.

Abstract:

African-American giant Toni Morrison and Algerian scholar and novelist Lynda Chouiten seem to be galaxies away but they happen to have so much in common. Both are feminist intellectuals who began as university teachers before embarking on a literary career. Storytelling, songs and folktales are similarly embedded in their lives and writings and both are concerned with issues of discrimination and violence. The present paper purports to focus on the issue of female trauma that pervades their novels The Bluest Eye (1970) and Une Valse (2019) respectively, and examine the two women authors’ treatment of this theme. Drawing on a comparative approach and a psychoanalytical study of the two main female characters, it aims at exploring the numerous similarities and the few differences between Pecola, the victimized Black adolescent who is so conditioned by white standards of beauty that she obsessively yearns to have blue eyes and the mature Algerian seamstress Chahira who tries to cope with her mental distress and schizophrenic bouts in a frustrating patriarchal environment. Résumé: De prime abord, rien ne semble relier l’écrivaine noire-américaine Toni Morrison et l’universitaire et romancière algérienne Lynda Chouiten qui ont cependant bien des points communs. Toutes deux des féministes, elles ont commencé par enseigner à l’université avant d’entamer une carrière littéraire basée sur les récits, les chants et autres contes populaires tout en traitant de discrimination et de violence. Le présent article examine donc la question du trauma féminin dans leurs romans respectifs, L’œil le plus bleu (1970) et Une Valse (2019), en adoptant une approche comparative et une étude psychanalytique des deux principaux personnages féminins. Il met l’accent sur les innombrables similarités et les rares différences entre Pecola, l’adolescente noire victimisée dont l’obsession par les normes de beauté imposées par les blancs lui font halluciner d’avoir des yeux bleus, et Chahira, la couturière algérienne mure qui peine à s’accommoder de sa détresse mentale et de ses crises de schizophrénie dans son environnement patriarcal frustrant.

L’étude du passage du père Marie-Alain Couturier au Québec durant la guerre permet de rapatrier la représentation que les Québécois d’hier et d’aujourd’hui se font d’un conflit toujours et déjà européen. L’activité du père Couturier témoigne à souhait du fait que si la guerre fut une période de prospérité économique en Amérique du Nord, elle fut aussi le moment d’une effervescence culturelle et intellectuelle méconnue. Le travail de l’artiste devenu dominicain révèle un besoin de « libération », là-bas et ici, et donne tout son sens à son compagnonnage de la France libre : promotion de la liberté va de pair avec liberté intérieure, avec spiritualité, avec affirmation du sujet, trame essentielle de la peinture moderne en train de s’esquisser. Comme en littérature chez les gens de La Relève des années 1930, Couturier tente de formuler une esthétique artistique moderne et chrétienne.

Abstract:

The Archives Marie-Alain Couturier is devoted to the work of one man and to his achievement in reconciling religious and Modern art. The Archives owes its existence to Père Régamey who was able to keep Père Couturier’s papers together after he died in 1954, and to the intervention of the Menil Foundation in 1975. The Archives has two aims: to publish the writings of Père Couturier together with related material, and to conserve a body of documentation which is indispensable for the study of 20th century art. The Archives comprise Père Couturier’s manuscripts and correspondence, and an extensive file, including correspondence with Matisse, documenting in detail the planning and building of the chapel at the convent at Vence.

Université Paris XII Cette étude a pour objet une réflexion sur les stéréotypes interculturels utilisés dans la presse écrite française qui parle des couturiers japonais. Dans notre article, nous nous sommes proposée d’étudier les stéréotypes fréquemment utilisés dans les médias, qui touchent au monde de la mode, en particulier, dans deux quotidiens français dont la sensibilité politique est divergente, Libération et Le Figaro. Ces deux journaux présentent la mode proposée par les couturiers japonais à compter des années 80, époque qui correspond à ce qu’on a appelé «l'offensive économique du Japon en Occident». Dans les faits, chacun des journalistes de mode, que ce soit consciemment ou inconsciemment et outre sa sensibilité politique, a recours, semble-t-il, à des stéréotypes à propos du Japon, en particulier celui de la violence. Les stéréotypes interculturels dégagés de notre corpus ont des fonctions argumentatives, qu’on peut ramener aux trois catégorie d’Aristote éthique, pathétique et logique. Ils ont pour but de persuader le lecteur de la spécificité culturelle de la mode présentée par les créateurs japonais à Paris: les stéréotypes sont utilisés non pas pour qualifier les créations des couturiers japonais, mais pour étayer la vision préconstruite du Japon. Une telle approche est sans doute conditionnée par la forte croissance économique japonaise, si souvent évoquée en Occident à cette époque. Un contexte semblable a favorisé, à travers cette mode, la prédominance d’une image du Japon, telle que les Français l’avaient en fait déjà préalablement conçue. On se contente donc de reconduire une image du Japon pré-construite en la durcissant.

Cet article analyse le rôle de l’apprentissage de la couture dans le processus de socialisation des femmes en Mongolie contemporaine. À partir de données ethnographiques récoltées en 2018 au sein d’une université publique dans la capitale Ulaanbaatar, il montre comment l’atelier de couture est un espace privilégié d’apprentissage de la couture du deel , vêtement revendiqué comme traditionnel par les Mongols, d’entre-soi au féminin et de partages entre apprenties et enseignante. L’atelier devient un lieu de socialisation professionnelle des futures couturières, métier encore aujourd’hui fortement ancré dans une division genrée des rôles.

Abstract:

Harnessing concepts related to memory, trace, time and the archive, this article examines in detail the highly distinctive city photography of French photographer Stéphane Couturier. It focuses on the ways in which two of Couturier's major series, Archéologie urbaine (1994–2010) and Melting Point (2005–13), investigate the fabric of urban environments in Europe and beyond, concentrating in the first case on heritage layers and pockets of demolition or reconstruction, and in the second on the pervasive modular architecture of urban and peri-urban blocks. The article analyses the tension in Couturier between the photograph as documentary and as art, and situates the photographer – an architect by training – with regard to key nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century predecessors whose studies of the city in photography and in painting appear to resurface in his work and whose engagement with urban change and technological evolution he shares and updates for our time.

Abstract:

Based on the author’s research for her MA, supervised by Mary M. Brooks, this article examines the history of the little-documented but once famous London couturier, Mattli (1903/1904–1982). An argument is made for a re-evaluation of the importance of Mattli’s contribution to the post-war British fashion and textile industry which has so far been overlooked in the histories of fashion. Research is focused upon a wide range of sources, including a collection of press books from the Mattli archive at the Fashion Museum, Bath, and extant clothing in British collections.

Pourtant les caissières sont toujours atteintes de problèmes de dos et de varices, les couturières d'inflammations, les travailleuses d'hôpitaux de fatigue et d'insomnie, entre autres. Le retard des chercheuses et des chercheurs à reconnaître ces problèmes peut être attribué non seulement au sexisme mais aussi au fait que les outils de recherche sont développés en fonction du travail traditionnellement masculin et ne sont pas bien adaptés au travail féminin.

Delgadobius amazonensis Chani-Posse & Couturier, gen. et sp. nov., a new genus and species of the subtribe Philonthina (tribe Staphylinini) from Amazonia, is described and illustrated. The potential phylogenetic relationships of Delgadobius with other Neotropical genera of Philonthina are discussed. Distributional and bionomic data are also provided. Based on research from the author's master's thesis, ‘La mode en France durant la Première Guerre mondiale’, written at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris, this article examines the declining relationship between the Chambre syndicale de la couture parisienne, the couturiers and the seamstresses, which ignited an industry-wide labour strike in May 1917.

Abstract:

Ce texte fournit une introduction à l’intervention éducative, une notion aux origines « chargées », un terme qui n’est pas neutre et qui touche nécessairement à la définition du rôle et de la posture du chercheur en sciences humaines et sociales. L’intervention constitue à la fois une conception de la réalité, un rapport pluriel (à soi, à l’autre et au monde), une pratique complexe où le sujet et l’objet sont entremêlés, entrelacés et dialectisés tout au long de l’interaction qui les lie. Plusieurs auteurs (Lenoir, Larose, Deaudelin, Kalubi et Roy, 2002 ; Couturier, 2004 ; Larose, Couturier, Bédard, Larivée, Boulanger, Terrisse, 2013 ; Lenoir, 2009, 2011, 2014 ; Lenoir, Rey et Fazenda, 2001 ; etc.) ont souligné son caractère polysémique, sinon polyphonique, qui est présenté brièvement dans cette introduction. En éducation et en formation, la dialectique entre enseignement et apprentissage suppose interactions et médiations, introduit des régulations, éclaire le caractère dynamique du processus décisionnel des enseignants, produit du changement, autant de pistes qui permettent d’envisager la question de l’intervention en éducation selon trois perspectives : notionnel, épistémologique et empirique/praxique. Les problématiques qui sont développées dans les six articles du numéro thématique sont ici présentées avec pour ambition commune d’examiner des processus d’enseignement-apprentissage et de mettre en débat le concept d’intervention par le biais d’une démarche critique.

Encontram-se 37 espécies, entre os quais, seis foram consideradas prejudiciais, quatro atacando o fruto (Bephratelloides pomorum F. (Eurytomidae), Cerconota anonella Sepp (Stenomatidae), Membracis suctifructus Boulard & Couturier (Membracidae) e Pinnaspis aspidistrae Signoret (Diaspididae); duas nas folhas jovens; (Aphis spiraecola Patch e A. gossypii Glover (Aphididae); e uma perfurando tronco e ramos, Cratosomus bombina (Curculionidae). Trinta e quatro espécies são registradas pela primeira vez.

Abstract:

Nadezhda Lamanova was the only well-established Russian pre-revolutionary fashion designer who declared her loyalty to the new regime following the 1917 Bolshevik insurrection. The juxtaposition of the extraordinary glamour of her pre-1917 designs with her dedicated post-revolutionary service to the Bolsheviks has contributed to Lamanova’s mythical status in Russia. This paper contextualizes Lamanova’s designs within the pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary modernist arts and applied arts movements, and shows that Lamanova’s work and her personal life were embedded in the social, cultural, and artistic avant-garde of her times. In turn, the paper forges a link between Lamanova’s pre-and-post-1917 careers, periods that, previously, had been strictly delineated.

Abstract:

Victor Stiebel (1907–76), in his obituary in The Times, was described as a well known and highly esteemed British couturier. Yet, for the first eighteen years of his life, Stiebel lived unremarkably in Durban, South Africa, with his middle-class colonial family. In an article written by a fashion historian who appraised his importance within the British fashion industry, Stiebel is described as the quintessential English designer. How did this ‘Englishness’ develop and what evidence do we see of this quality in his autobiography South African Childhood (1968) that covers his childhood years? The leap from Durban to London and his subsequent career as a court dressmaker and couturier, plus designer for Hollywood stars including Vivien Leigh and Katherine Hepburn, is vast, but it is one that Stiebel eagerly made. The bridge, this article argues, is the very ‘Englishness’ that Stiebel encountered in his home and the colonial society of Durban in the Edwardian era in which he grew up. Life in the colonies concentrated this quality in its settlers probably because of their distance from the metropole rather than their proximity. This article sets out to examine what form this ‘Englishness’ took in Stiebel’s life and work, evident visually in his dress designs according to fashion historians, but also, from a literary historian’s point of view, in his autobiographical writing and written correspondence, particularly that with the actress Vivien Leigh.

"Georg Simmel is regarded as a co-founder of fashion theory. In his treatises of vestmental culture of the fin de siècle developed in his main work on the philosophy of money, he emphasizes imitation as a social force of changes in fashion. The then active makers of clothes and couturiers such as Charles Frederick Worth were not given any attention, Simmel instead developed his basic theorems of art referring to the work of painters and sculptors including Rembrandt and Auguste Rodin. The current debate on the convergence of art and fashion proposes to connect Simmel's philosophical analyses of culture with what were, for him, separate phenomena. "
