Abstract:
IntroductionThe Special Forces (SF) are an elite military group usually engaged in physically demanding field operations, resulting among others in high daily energy requirements. Optimising energy supply and nutritional requirements is therefore mandatory for success. The aim of this study was to estimate energy availability and nutrition during a Qualification Course (Q-Course) for Belgian SF.Methods21 participants recorded all foods and beverages consumed during four days in a structured food diary. Energy expenditure was measured with an accelerometer and fat mass measured with quadripolar impedance. Energy availability was calculated by the following formula: (energy intake by foods and beverages − energy expenditure for physical activity)/kg FFM/day (FFM, fat-free mass).ResultsThe mean (SD) total energy expenditure was 4926 kcal/day (238), with a minimum of 4645 kcal/day and a maximum of 5472 kcal/day. The mean (SD) total energy consumption was 4186 kcal/day (842), giving an energy balance ranging from −2005 kcal/day to 1113 kcal/day. The mean (SD) energy availability was 17 kcal/kg FFM/day, with a minimum of 1 kcal/kg FFM/day and a maximum of 44 kcal/kg FFM/day. The mean (SD) intake of carbohydrates was 6.8 g/kg body weight/day (1.5).ConclusionsDuring this studied Q-Course, energy intake was not optimal as demonstrated by an overall negative energy balance and low energy availability. High interindividual variations in energy intake were found, highlighting the importance of providing SF members nutritional education.

Abstract:
Objective: To assess the prevalence of microlaryngeal teaching course in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited otolaryngology residency programs in an effort to evaluate the nature, perceived value and barriers to implementation of microlaryngeal courses. Method: A 14-question survey to all ACGME-accredited otolaryngology programs in the United States. Result: Out of 119 ACGME-accredited otolaryngology programs identified on the ACGME Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database, responses were received from 67 programs (56%). Although 90% of respondents indicated that instruction courses in one discipline or another existed at their institution for their otolaryngology residents, only 33% indicated that their program offers a hands-on instruction course in microlaryngeal surgery. Of those programs that offered a microlaryngeal surgery course, 100% felt the residents appreciated the course; 95% of those programs that did not have a course felt their residents would appreciate a microlaryngeal course at their institution if they were able to offer one. Among programs without a microlaryngeal teaching course, the largest perceived barriers were cost and availability of appropriate equipment. Conclusion: Microlaryngeal courses for otolaryngology residency training are limited in availability in the United States, and there is variability in training across the country. All respondents in our survey indicated the value in these courses for microlaryngeal surgical skill training. There is a clear role for increasing availability of low-cost microlaryngeal stations and courses.

Abstract:
Deciding the proportion of online to face-to-face components of a blended learning course is a complex problem that entails many decisions. These decisions are affected by different criteria related to the nature of the course, the educational institution, the teacher, and the students. The impact of these influential criteria on the design process is not always obvious. The aim of this study is to assist academics to design successful blended courses by investigating the impact of criteria that need consideration when deciding the proportion of online components of a blended course. A modified Delphi survey was used in this study. Eighteen experts with experience in instructional design and online teaching participated in the study. Findings indicate that technological aspects, that is, Availability of technology and Students’ access to technology, have a strong negative impact on the proportion of online to face-to-face components. On the other hand, students’ flexibility and convenience as well as the availability of a high level of institutional support should motivate academics to incorporate a high proportion of online components in their courses. The results also indicate that blended learning courses should have medium to high proportions of online components.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This study examines whether the effectiveness of online accounting education relative to traditional in-class delivery depends upon the level of the course. Students enrolled in principles and advanced cost/managerial and in advanced financial accounting courses were surveyed regarding their perceptions on several dimensions. The results suggest that the course level is important when assessing whether it is advisable to offer online accounting courses. In advanced courses, the outcomes examined were significantly more favorable for traditional classroom environments than for online, while the delivery mode was not important in principles courses when controlling for other variables. The results also provide further support for the notion that blended learning, i.e., offering a few on-campus class meetings for a predominately online course, may be desirable regardless of course level, but that course level is potentially important when deciding upon the mix of face-to-face versus online instruction. Abstract:
A postal questionnaire was sent to all participants at the basic medical acupuncture courses for doctors organised by the British Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS) over a 12 month period. There was a 78% response to this. The answers showed that 95% of GPs attending a course were using acupuncture as a treatment at least once a week, but 39% of hospital doctors had not practised acupuncture after their course. Point finding and the treatment of musculoskeletal pain were considered to be the most useful subjects in the course, while auricular and electro- acupuncture were the least popular. Those who had joined the BMAS thought that the most important functions of the Society were meeting other medical acupuncturists, attending further courses, and this Journal. The least important were accreditation and the availability of learning resources.

Abstract:
Reflecting similar global business patterns, employees are continuously pursuing means to set themselves apart fromtheir colleagues, including through education. With the advances in technology, availability of online businessprograms, marketing of university degrees, and the convenience offered through online education, there has been anexplosive growth recently in online education, particularly for business degrees, both at the undergraduate and MBAlevels. Overall enrollment in U.S. MBA programs has actually decreased in the past five years but enrollment in theonline degrees continues to increase.Given the growth and emphasis in online MBA programs, there has to be measures of quality assurances andensuring student success through learning outcomes and ability of students to develop the requisite competenciesnecessary to excel in organizations. Furthermore, Universities have to be using the relevant technologies, studentshave to demonstrate behaviors that would enable them to succeed in online programs, and faculties have to adaptteaching strategies. So, what actually fosters success and student satisfaction about MBA programs? This paperexamines how online class interactions and quality of instructor online feedback can lead to successfully completingan online MBA course and subsequently the MBA program.

Abstract:
SynopsisSome 6 billion of the 14 billion barrels of proven reserves on the United Kingdom Continental Shelf have already been produced. The remaining 8 billion barrels are reasonably insensitive to oil prices even as low as $10 per barrel, as the operating costs of most existing fields are below $7 per barrel. Production from these proven reserves is already dropping from a peak of just under 3 million barrels per day towards 0·3 million barrels per day in the year 2000.A description of the buried sequence in the northern North Sea and the frontier area towards Rockall and Faeroe leads to an assessment of probable oil reserves somewhat more conservative than the Department of Energy best guess of 44 billion barrels. Further developments will be sensitive to the course of oil prices, but at least another 8 billion barrels could be added to the proven reserves. The world is consuming oil far faster than it is finding it, and the supply must be dominated again by the Middle East producers as production declines.

Abstract:
The uptake of semantic technology depends on the availability of useful tools that enable Web developers to generate linked course data automaticly. RDF triple allows web page to contain machine-readable content that is easier to find and mashable with other content. This paper describes a framework that turns this idea around, using RDF as a template language for the generation of machine-readable triple from human-readable data on Web page. Most existing methords generate RDF triple by combining the template with query results from a relational database. In the Linked Course Data Generating framework, the raw course data is turned into RDF triple, then is turned into linked data, finally is turned into ontology. This paper evaluates the performance of framework.

Abstract:
Purpose – Technology is changing the use of textbooks in higher education. The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of offering multiple textbook formats in the same economics course using textbooks that provided multiple options including new and used printed books, as well as electronic books. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on a survey conducted in nine sections of introductory economics classes at a public US university. The study took place within the confines of undergraduate courses that offered textbooks with multiple available formats. A survey collected information about the format each student selected, the factors that students considered when choosing the format, and their overall attitudes about their selection at the end of the semester. Demographic information was also recorded. Findings – The paper finds that students selected a variety of textbook options and identified the factors of cost, ease of use, and learning style as most important to their textbook format decision. Students overwhelmingly support the value of offering choice in textbook formats. In examining student selections further, the paper finds that among students that select an electronic textbook, cost is the dominant factor, while students selecting a new printed textbook mention their learning style and ease of use more often. Students that selected a used printed textbook identified cost, ease of use, and the ability to keep the textbook as factors important to them. Originality/value – This study provides evidence on the impact of having multiple textbook format options within the same course. Overall, the results suggest that the student population has diverse preferences and any uniform policy on textbook format selection may not satisfy the needs of all student groups. Furthermore, students themselves recognize the diversity in learning styles and see value in having options in textbook format selection.

AbstractThis paper extends previous research showing that experienced difficulty of recall can influence evaluative judgments (e.g., Winkielman & Schwarz, 2001) to a field study of university students rating a course. Students completed a mid-course evaluation form in which they were asked to list either 2 ways in which the course could be improved (a relatively easy task) or 10 ways in which the course could be improved (a relatively difficult task). Respondents who had been asked for 10 critical comments subsequently rated the course more favorably than respondents who had been asked for 2 critical comments. An internal analysis suggests that the number of critiques solicited provides a frame against which accessibility of instances is evaluated. The paper concludes with a discussion of implications of the present results and possible directions for future research.

Abstract:
We characterized college human genetics courses for nonscience majors (NSM) by 1) determining the number of U.S. institutions offering courses and the number of students taking them; and 2) surveying course instructors on course demographics, content, materials, and pedagogies. Between 2002 and 2004, an estimated 480 institutions of higher education (15.2%) offered a course: 8.4% of 1667 associate colleges, 16.1% of baccalaureate institutions, 25.3% of master's institutions, and 32.9% of doctoral institutions. This indicates a need to increase access to genetics education in 2-yr colleges. Based on instructor responses, approximately 32,000–37,000 students annually complete an NSM human genetics course out of approximately 1.9 million students earning a college degree each year (2.0%). Regarding course content, instructors consistently rated many concepts significantly higher in importance than the emphasis placed on those concepts in their courses. Although time could be a factor, instructors need guidance in the integration of the various concepts into their courses. Considering only 30.2% of the instructors were reportedly trained in genetics (another 25.4% in molecular and cellular biology) and the small fraction of students completing NSM human genetics courses, these results demonstrate the need for increasing the availability of these courses in undergraduate institutions of higher education, and particularly at 2-yr colleges.

Abstract:
Using rich administrative data from North Carolina and school-course fixed effects models, this study explores whether the availability of same-race instructors in advanced-track sections of courses affects Black high school students’ enrollment in, and performance in, advanced-track courses. The availability of at least one Black instructor at the advanced level is associated with a 2 percentage point increase in the uptake of advanced courses for Black students. However, conditional on enrollment in the advanced track, Black students are no more likely to pass advanced-track courses when taught by Black teachers. Positive effects on enrollment are driven by enrollment shifts for higher achieving students. Additional analyses showing benefits to non-Black students suggest that the main channels are not race-specific role model effects.

SummarySuicide is an important contributor to premature mortality accounting for over 800 000 deaths worldwide every year Environmental and genetic factors acting from before birth to old age affect an individual's risk of suicide. Risk is influenced not only by psychiatric illness and impulsive behaviour but also by factors such as the cultural acceptability of suicide, the ease of availability of lethal suicide methods, help-seeking behaviours in times of crisis and access to effective treatments following self-harm. Suicide prevention programmes might usefully focus on two discrete areas: the prevention of the psychiatric illnesses that precede suicide and tackling those risk factors particular to suicide such as media influences, help-seeking, the availability of methods and the medical management of self-harm.Delcaration of interestNone.

Abstract:
There is renewed interest in the role of arts education in the curriculum of U.S. public schools not only because of the intrinsic value of the arts and its believed impact on achievement, but because cultivating creativity is thought to promote innovation and fuel economic growth. Still, we know little about basic access to arts education. Using individual-level administrative data from The University of Texas at Dallas Education Research Center (UTD-ERC), we develop several distinct indices of access to identify high schools rich in the arts. We find that high schools offering an extensive number of courses in the arts do not necessarily enjoy high rates of student participation. Policymakers who examine access based only on course counts in the arts will identify predominately large, non-rural high schools as having arts-rich environments. Evaluating arts programs along a single dimension, as is common in federal reports and other studies, fails to provide an accurate representation of access to arts education. Any examination of access to arts education should jointly consider course availability and student engagement in the arts. Policymakers can follow our approach and develop similar indices to assess the current state of arts education in their states.

Abstract:
This article describes how with a non-formal education, a scholar has to choose courses among various domains to meet the research aims. In spite of this, the availability of large number of courses, makes the process of selecting the appropriate course a tedious, time-consuming, and risky decision, and the course selection will directly affect the performance of a scholar. The best approach to solve such problems and to produce desirable results is to use a “recommendation system.” Recommender systems at the core employ information retrieval techniques and the ongoing effort of such information retrieval systems is to deliver the most relevant information to the learner. Therefore, if a recommender system is able to recognize the intent and requirements that a user express in the form of queries, it can generate more valid recommendations. This article presents an N-Gram classification technique which can be used to generate course recommendations to scholars depend on the requirements and domain of interest. This way of personalization can improve the quality of research and learning experience by recommending courses which are otherwise overlooked by scholars, as it takes the time to go through the curriculum and finding the best possible match.

Improving global health education to ensure health professionals are prepared and competent in the world’s increasingly interconnected health-scape is a vital need. For many health professionals, global health education is facilitated through short, pre-departure courses in cross-cultural health and development work. There is currently limited literature on both the availability and the effectiveness of such courses. Our research aim was to explore the impact of a short course in global health education, designed and delivered by an Australian not-for-profit organisation, Intermed SA (Intermed). We conducted a short online survey of Intermed graduates, followed by semi-structured interviews with selected participants. The results indicate that Intermed’s International Health and Development course was effective in achieving the course objectives as assessed by graduates, whilst also having a positive practical impact on the graduates’ professional development.

Abstract:
I aimed to document the online undergraduate course supply in biology to evaluate how well biology educators are serving the diverse and growing population of online students. I documented online biology course offerings in the 2015–2016 academic year at 96 American colleges and universities. I quantified differences in variety, extent, and availability of courses offered by different kinds of academic institutions and characterized 149 online biology courses offered. Although there was no relationship between an institution’s enrollment size and any measure of its online biology offerings, I found significantly more online biology course options at 2-year public compared with 4-year public and 4-year private schools. Courses offered for nonmajors, including students pursuing healthcare-related degrees, were three times as common as those intended for biology majors, who were more likely to be offered hybrid courses with face-to-face laboratories. These data indicate some deficiencies in online biology course options; options for students majoring in biology are limited at all types of institutions examined with a minority of 4-year institutions having any online options in biology. Significant investment of institutional resources in faculty training and technological support are necessary to develop online biology courses that will benefit a larger student population.

Objective. The lack of well-trained, dedicated infection control personnel prevents optimal control of nosocomial infections in Latin American pediatric oncology centers. We collaboratively planned and implemented a multinational training course in San Salvador, El Salvador, to address this need.Methods.The course relied on its organizers' experience in training international healthcare providers, the availability of the International Training Center for Nurses, previous infection control collaboration with the Hospital Nacional de Niños Benjamin Bloom, and resources available at the University of El Salvador. The 4-week course consisted of lecture sessions combined with practical laboratory and hospital experience.Results.Two courses, one conducted in 2005 and one in 2006, trained 44 professionals from 15 Latin American countries. Evaluations showed that course content and teacher performance met the trainees' needs and that all trainees acquired the necessary knowledge and skills.Conclusions.The course met the need for the training of Latin American infection control practitioners. Our experience can serve as a model for other organizations interested in strengthening infection control and prevention at international sites.

Abstract:
An assessment of the economic availability of direct oral anticoagulants for COVID-19 outpatient treatment was carried out. For each anticoagulant, the average cost of the package and treatment course were determined, the coefficients of availability in relation to the average wage and the minimum living wage were calculated. Based on the results of the study, an ABC analysis was carried out. The costs of dabigatran, apixaban and rivaroxaban were found to be in category A (high cost) in relation to the minimum living wage. The most accessible of the investigated anticoagulants is apixaban 5 mg in a package of 60 tablets, the coefficient of availability of this drug in relation to the average wage was 21.7, in relation to the living wage – 66.1. The low availability of anticoagulants for the course treatment of COVID-19 in outpatient settings justifies the need for the formation of drug programs for COVID-19 outpatient with at the expense of the federal budget.

This study discusses the degree of availability of the dimensions of intellectual security in the language competencies course for the secondary stage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The descriptive- analytical approach was applied using four main dimensions of intellectual security, including the religious dimension, national dimension, social dimension, and scientific thinking dimension. Thirty- four security indicators were found, and based on them; a design content analysis card was created. The content analysis card was applied to the study population of the language competencies course for the first grade of secondary school in the two semesters after ensuring the validity and stability of the card. The results of the study: the degree of availability of indicators of the religious dimension and the dimension of scientific thinking in the language competencies course was low, while the social dimension and the national dimension had a deficient degree. The language proficiency course was generally balanced in its inclusion of indicators of the dimensions of intellectual security as they were repeated in the first semester 202 times. In contrast, they were repeated in the second semester 211 times. Several recommendations are initiated based on the results, such as guiding and directing those in charge of preparing and developing academic courses on how to include indicators of the dimensions of intellectual security to enhance its consolidation among students. In addition, provide training courses for the teachers to instill intellectual security dimensions in students' minds and acquire them in proportion to the secondary stage. Moreover, to provide scientific workshops and awareness seminars for the students; to make them aware of the national visions in general and the 2030 vision in particular.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectives:A growing number of golfers are senior citizens, and it may be predicted that the number of golf-related medical emergencies, including the incidence of cardiac arrest, will increase. This study was designed to survey the level of preparedness of golf courses in Southeastern Pennsylvania to respond to cardiac arrest among their members. Methods:A telephone survey of all of the 180 golf courses in the area was conducted to determine their type (public/private), volume in rounds per year, presence of automated external defibrillator (AED) devices, number of employees, and percentage of employees with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Participants also were asked to estimate the time needed to reach the farthest point on their course in order to estimate a maximum time to the application of an AED device. Results:A total of 131 of 180 golf courses completed the survey (53 private, 78 public) for an overall response rate of 73%. Private courses reported a greater average number of employees with CPR training [private = 9.1, public = 3.6; p = 0.001] and in AED presence [public = 9%, private = 58.5%; p = 0.0001]. Public courses support a higher volume of play than do private courses [public = 32,000, private = 24,000; p = 0.001], yet have far fewer employees [public = 25, private = 44; p = 0.004]. The longest time necessary to reach the most remote point on the course was between four and five minutes in all courses. Analysis was performed using the Student's t-test and Pearson's Chi-square as appropriate. Conclusion:Neither public nor private golf courses are well equipped to respond to cardiac arrest, but outcomes on public courses likely are to be far worse.

Abstract:

Abstract. Water is a very crucial element to sustain life on earth. The availability of water varies both spatially and temporally. India being a water stress country, the per capita availability of water is reducing with time. It is predicted that by 2050 around 54% of the country will be water scarce. The changing climate along with the ever-increasing population is putting additional stress on water availability. The science of water, its availability and distribution on earth and its atmosphere, is generally regarded as hydrology. The important aspects of hydrology and hydraulic or more broadly water resources are taught as the subject or optional subjects the branch of Civil Engineering at almost all engineering institutes/colleges at the undergraduate level. It is also one of the specializations for post-graduate level studies. It is, by now, well proven that the geospatial technology play crucial role in water resources assessment, planning and management. However, the young minds (graduate and post-graduate students) are just being trained for typical hydrology using traditional means and approaches. The advancement and potential of geospatial technology has drawn the attention of academician, and it has been started as a subject mostly at the post-graduate courses. Recently, some of the institutions have started courses on geo-informatics at the graduate level. However, the hydrology and geospatial technology are generally taught as two separate subjects under different course at different levels mostly under the broad subject of Civil Engineering. The present paper emphasis on needs and ways of updating Civil Engineering course curriculum by focusing on incorporation of applications of geospatial technology in hydrology as regular subject.

Abstract:
Introduction: Courses scheduling is a very important activity in the teaching and learning process in the Mathematics Education Department. The teaching and learning process is carried out by all students and lecturers so that the schedule of courses arranged must benefit the lecturers and students. If some of the provisions in schedule are not properly calculated, it will cause difficulty during the scheduling process. These provisions include courses held, number of classes available, amount of time available, number of students taking and availability of lecturers who teach. This study aims to create automation on the course scheduling using six stages of FAST Methodology which include Scope Definition, Problem Analysis, Requirement Analysis, Logical Design, Physical Design, and Evaluation. Method: The Welsh-Powell algorithm has used which is one of the algorithms in the graph coloring method and implemented using C ++ programming. Result: The results of the study show that the program is able to provide a quick and accurate solution for setting up course schedules. The results of this study can provide convenience in managing the right course scheduling so that it helps the course scheduling process to be even better. Discussion: Further research can be done using other graph coloring algorithms or by performing an analysis of the ease of use of the resulting program.

Remediation is a required component of pharmacy programs. In a pharmacy calculations course, two student-centered models of remediation have been utilized. These models were a shift from an intensive, hands-on infrastructure of faculty and student engagement to a more student self-directed process. The models utilized development of an individualized plan for each student, clearly outlined expectations, faculty availability for consultation, as well as flexibility in remote completion of the assigned activities. Both models resulted in student success. Article Type: Note

Abstract:
The modern student exists in a highly technical and digitally driven educational world. Online delivery of courses and interactions, with the primary purpose of enhancing learning, and access to learning opportunities is becoming almost mainstream. Yet, despite the broad availability of online education courses and systems, the completion rates and levels of student satisfaction with online courses remains comparatively low. Studies have indicated that online students are seeking personal engagement to drive their learning. This project looked at the importance of having a human face at the heart of the online course materials to help develop a more personal level of engagement. The project, carried out between 2016 and 2018, involved a randomized control trial of 84 students, and compared two sets of course materials, for a common course topic, one with human face-based resources, and one without. The results clearly showed a significant increase in student engagement with the human face-based resources, but the learning outcomes, for those who completed, were not significantly different between the two groups.

Abstract:
This study aims to evaluate a business English course for students registered in Master of Professional Accounting or Accountancy (hereafter MPAcc) based on needs analysis of the degree candidates. An online questionnaire, semi-structured interview and classroom observation were used to gain data on the candidates' perception and motivation of learning Business English, learning needs concerning language skills, course contents and course delivery. The results show that the candidates placed importance on learning the language for practical use in business-related domain in general, and for accounting business in particular, and the current in-house business English syllabus has better satisfied the learners need by adopting up-to-date business literature, engaging the learners in discussion. The findings also reveal some issues in designing and teaching courses of English for Specific Purposes (hereafter ESP), including inadequate involvement of accounting specific knowledge in the course contents, lower-than-expected learning outcomes caused by super-large class sizes and limited course availability. Finally, recommendations are given based on the findings as to revise course syllabus and update course arrangement by taking account of the adult language learners' needs pertaining to MPAcc program.

Abstract:
Purpose – Delivery of sustainability-related curriculum to undergraduate students can be problematic due to the traditional “siloing” of curriculum by faculties along disciplinary lines. In addition, while there is often a ready availability of courses focused on sustainability issues in the later years of students’ programs, few early entry-level courses focused on sustainability, broad enough to apply to all disciplines, are available to students in the first year of their program. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, we describe the development, and preliminary implementation, of an entry-level, interdisciplinary sustainability course. To do so, the authors describe the development of a university-wide initiative designed to bridge units on campus working and teaching in sustainability areas, and to promote and support sustainability curriculum development. Findings – The authors describe the conceptual framework for organising course content and delivery. The authors conclude with an informal assessment of the successes and challenges, and offer learning activities, student assessments and course administration recommendations for consideration when developing courses with similar learning goals. Originality/value – The positive and negative experiences gained through developing and offering a course of this nature, in a large research-focused university, offers knew insights into potential barriers for implementing first-year cross-cutting sustainability curriculum.

AbstractThe exponential growth of qualitative research (QR) has coincided with methodological innovations, the proliferation of qualitative textbooks and journals, and the greater availability of qualitative methods courses. In spite of these advances, the pedagogy for teaching qualitative methods has received little attention. This paper provides a philosophical foundation for teaching QR with active learning strategies and shows how active learning is fully integrated into a one-semester course. The course initiates students into qualitative dispositions and skills as students develop study aims and procedures; enter the field to gather data; analyze the full set of student-generated data; and write results in a final report. Conducting a study in one semester is challenging but has proven feasible and disabuses students of the view that QR is simple, unscientific, or non-rigorous. Student reflections on course assignments are integrated into the paper. The strengths and limitations of this pedagogical approach are also described.

The present study examined the availability of human factors/ergonomics courses to students in the U.S. Fifty schools were selected randomly from each of four categories of universities and colleges (Research I and II, Doctoral I and II, Masters I and II, and Baccalaureate/Liberal Arts I and II). Only one human factors/ergonomics (HFE) course was found in the sample of liberal arts colleges and only 10% of the master's universities had such a course. Of the doctoral institutions 62% had no HFE courses and 44% of the research institutions had no HFE courses. The possible reasons for these results are discussed as well as some possible actions that might be taken within the context of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society's strategic plan to ameliorate this problem and expose students in higher education environments to the field, not only for the students' benefit but also for the discipline.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT New Zealand is a largely rural nation. Despite the regionalisation of trauma services, rural hospitals continue to provide trauma and emergency care. A dedicated rural inter-professional team-based simulation course was designed, as part of a wider strategy of using simulation-based education to address the disparity in experience and training for rural hospital teams providing emergency and trauma care. ASSESSMENT A pre-course questionnaire identified learning needs. Post-course evaluation and a follow-up survey assessed participants’ perception of the course, and whether lasting changes in clinical or organisational practice occurred. RESULTS Three courses were provided over 2 years to 60 interprofessional participants from eight rural hospitals. The course employed an interprofessional faculty and used skill workshops and high-fidelity trauma simulations to address learning needs identified in pre-course research. Evaluation showed the course to be an effective learning experience for participants. The post-course survey indicated possible lasting changes in team performance and rural hospital protocols. This educational strategy also allowed the collection of research data for investigating rural team dynamics and interprofessional learning. STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVEMENT Further development of rural interprofessional simulation courses should include more diverse clinical content, including paediatric and medical scenarios. Participant access was sometimes limited by typical rural challenges such as hospital staffing and locum availability. LESSONS Rural simulation-based education is both effective for rural trauma team training and a vehicle for rural research; however, there are challenges to participant access and course sustainability, which echo the rural–urban disparity.

Abstract:
Abstract Family are often sources of social, instrumental, and financial support for older adults. However, in many types of survey and archival data, details on the provision of support are lacking. This study examines the association between kin availability and cause-specific mortality among adults over age 60 using multiple longitudinal linked data sources from North Orkney, Scotland, 1851-1911. This study explores the relationships between cause of death and kin availability, as certain ailments may be amenable to interventions related to social support in this period while others may not. This approach will aid in interpreting the effects of social support that may be transmitted through kin networks. Reconstructed individual life courses (N=4,946) and genealogies, in combination with data on the proximity non-coresident kin, are used to examine kin availability and propinquity over the life course. Cause of death is available from death records and has been coded into the ICD. Orkney provides an interesting case study as longitudinal information is available on mortality and kin availability during a time of population aging. Kin availability is associated with longevity in this sample, while cause-specific analysis allows us to evaluate the role of social support in promoting longevity net of this association.
