Full textThe main objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the benefit of preserving the conformal invariance of a classical field theory during the quantization process. Especially, we are dealing with three questions related to the quantization of SSO(2,4)S and gauge invariant field theories defined in a conformally flat space-time What is the suitable formalism in this case? What are the benefits and the implications on physical problems? How to find conformally invariant gauge fixing conditions? During this thesis, several tools have been developed in order to draw the answers to these three questions. The first tool is named the "Weyl Bridge", it allows to use the Weyl rescaling to transport SSO(2,4)S-invariant theories frorn Minkowski to conformally flat spaces. The second tool is provided by an extension of Zumino's theorem which allows to deduce, from the Weyl invariance of a field theory, the SSO(2,4)S-invariance of its restriction to a conformally flat space. The latter tool, called "Weyl-to-Riemann", is a new method which exploits the "conformal" properties of Weyl's geometry in order to provide a simple, usable and systematic way allowing to construct conformally invariant field equations defined in an arbitrary curved space-time. We have successfully applied these tools for the SSO(2,4)S-invariant quantization of the free Maxwell field in a de Sitter space that we have then extended to all conformally flat spaces. We have also used ourformalism to analyze the physical problem of two opposite charges at rest in the de Sitter space poles. Finally, several conformally invariant équations have been recovered using the "Weyl-to-Riemann" method

Full textTemporality is a critical aspect of live shows and art installations. Technical artifacts and processes participate in a rich network of temporal interactions with the human performers and/or the audience. In this context, technicians and artists need tools to plan and control the temporal scenarios of their show or installation. In this work we present Quadrant, a programming environment for designing and performing temporal scenarios. Such scenarios can be used to drive various technical aspects of live shows and art installations, such as audio and video playback, lights, or mechatronics. We explore a hybrid approach aimed at bridging the gap between a programming language and a show controller. Our environment features a structure editor operating on a syntax tree that combines textual tokens and user interface widgets. This allows specifying scenarios algorithmically, while expressing continuous time transformations using graphical curves. Scenarios are compiled on-the-fly into a bytecode run by a virtual machine. A cooperative scheduler organizes the execution of concurrent flows along multiple time axes, using abstract dates and delays. Abstract time is mapped onto wall-clock time through the use of time transformations, specified as tempo curves, for which we provide a formalism in terms of differential equations. Tempo curves can be built from cubic Bézier curves. The virtual machine feeds back execution informations to the structure editor, which uses it to highlight executed statements and display progress wheels and status icons directly in the code. This allows an operator to easily monitor the progression and the temporality of the scenarios

Full textIn this thesis, we take a systematic study of global regularity of the Maxwell equations and of the Yang-Mills equations on curved black hole space-times. In the first chapter, we write the proof of the non-blow up of the Yang-Mills curvature on arbitrary curved space-times using the Klainerman-Rodnianski parametrix combined with suitable Grönwall type inequalities. While the Chruściel-Shatah argument requires a control on two derivatives of the Yang-Mills curvature, we can get away by controlling only one derivative instead, and write a new gauge independent proof on arbitrary, fixed, sufficiently smooth, globally hyperbolic, curved 4-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds. In it's sequel, we study the Maxwell equations in the domain of outer-communication of the Schwarzschild black hole. We show that if we assume that the middle components of the non-stationary solutions of the Maxwell equations verify a Morawetz type estimate supported on a compact region in space around the trapped surface, then we can prove uniform decay properties for the components of the Maxwell fields in the entire exterior of the Schwarzschild black hole, including the event horizon, by making only use of Sobolev inequalities combined with energy estimates using the Maxwell equations directly. This proof does not pass through the scalar wave equation on the Schwarzschild black hole, does not need to separate the middle components for the Maxwell fields, and would then be in particular useful for the non-abelian case of the Yang-Mills equations where the separation of the middle components cannot occur. The last chapter is an opening to different problems in partial differential equations

Abstract: Between the 1950s and the 1980s, in a national context of industrial expansion, urban growth and demographic concentration in towns, the city of Franca-SP consolidated its position as the main export center for men's leather-made shoes. Exports began in the 1970s, with American customers as the main market. The development in the sector created a complex of leather-shoe plants shaped by different kinds of producers of raw-materials and shoes components, especially tanneries and rubber goods. One of the main characteristics of this complex was the heterogeneity of size and technology employed by the plants. This industrial development turned the city into an important destination for migrants and thousands of former rural workers moved to Franca in search of jobs and better living conditions. Thus, the main goal of the thesis is the analysis of the transformation in production processes, work relations and the making of the working class during this period. The study focused on the daily experiences of male and female workers who dedicated long years of their lives to leather, shoes and the production of their components. I tried to understand the characteristics and the impact of technological transformations on the workforce and the formation of manpower dedicated to the control of other workers' job time, on working conditions and on experiences in common, essential ingredients for the making of a class identity centered on shared interests. At the end, I interpreted the social conflicts that arose in the work environment through the analysis of various strategies developed by workers to produce less than they were able, what allowed them to widen the idea of class struggle, as we understand the productive sphere as a privileged space for interpreting the many forms of working-class resistance. Through the examination of lawsuits related to labor topics initiated by workers, I verified that the Labor Courts constituted a privileged space for settling disagreements between workers and capitalists, for assuring the rights of workers frequently denied by companies and, not rarely, for imposing limits on the will of bosses and other hierarchical superiors

Full textThe work discussed in this thesis is a contribution to the understanding of damage mechanisms and identifying a fatigue criterion of polyamide 6,6 reinforced with 30 wt% of short glass-fibres (PA66GF30), obtained by injection molding, taking into account the effects of temperature, water content and fiber orientations induced by the process. Thus, in a first step, the characterization of the mechanical behavior of PA66GF30 for different fiber orientations, temperatures, moisture contents and strain rates, was conducted. They have highlighted the role of the polyamide matrix (PA66) in the temperature, water content and strain rate behavior dependence of PA66GF30. In this sense, Time-Temperature-Water content equivalence of mechanical behaviour of PA66 was demonstrated using master curves obtained by DMA. A new expression of the equivalent strain rate at temperature reference and a water content reference was then deduced, and it is now possible to relay the triple sensitivity to strain rate, temperature and water content in only one term. Then, a fatigue test campaign in controlled environmental conditions, allowed to study the effects of fiber orientation, temperature and water content on the fatigue behaviour of PA66GF30 specimens. The mechanical analysis of these tests has led to the identification of a fatigue life criterion, taking into account all the influencing factors. Finally, the X-ray microtomography under synchrotron beam was used to study the mechanisms in fatigue damage present in the PA66GF30, following post-mortem analysis and in-situ experiments. The analysis of these observations has shed light on the mechanisms damage and, it has been proposed a new fatigue damage scenario

Full textThe short intermittent exercises are regularly practiced to develop the maximal oxygen uptake (VO²max) of middle-distance trained runners. According to many authors, the development of VO²max occured when the exercises performed permit to elicit and to maintain a high level of oxygen uptake. The objective of our work was, on the one hand, to specify the cardio-respiratory and metabolic responses induced by a model of short intermittent exercise and, on the other hand, to determine the influence of the conditions of measurement, the intensity of exercise and the series on the total time to exhaustion (TTE), the time spent at VO²max (tVO²max) and the lactatemia during this type of exercise. The model of intermittent exercise chosen in our experiments is the 30s-30s because it is usually used and this whatever the age and the level of the runners. The values of lactate concentrations obtained at the end of the exercise highlight that a 30s-30s does not induce a high stress on anaerobic glycolysis. However, this study also indicates that the cardiorespiratory level of request could be low and sometimes even insufficient so that certain subjects do not attained their VO²max. Our second study confirmed that an intermittent exercise carried out on a track induces a more important metabolic request than the same exercise carried out on a treadmill. However, even on track, 6 subjects out of the 11 tested did not reached their VO²max. Finally, our two last studies stress that an increase in the exercise interval intensity does not make it possible to raise the tVO2max and induces a significant reduction in the TTE. Then, series make it possible to increase the TTE significantly. However, it does not seem advantageous for the athletes to use them since the tVO²max is not different when the exercise is performed with or without series

Full textThe detection, quantification and analysis of the DNA from various biological targets is of major interest in life sciences. To do so, the use of real-time PCR instruments allows to simultaneously conduct both the in vitro DNA amplification and the detection by fluorescence measurement. This technique offers easy operation (one step only), rapidity (from a few minutes to a few hours), high sensitivity and specificity (detection of a target in highly complex biological matrixes). Despite its efficiency, the technique still suffers from several drawbacks such as its relatively high cost (purchase and maintenance), its fragile optic setup and its poor ability to be miniaturized. The LEM laboratory has developed an alternative technique based on an electrochemical measurement where the detector, made out of screen-printed electrodes, is integrated to the consumable. The redox probes interact mainly with the double-stranded DNA molecule and are either organometallic complexes or phenolic derivatives. Following the development of a proof-of-concept instrument in collaboration with the company Easy Life Science, the main goal of the thesis was to evaluate and improve its analytical performances through the use' of different redox probes and take part in development of new electroanalytical methods for the analysis of biomolecules based on electrochemical melting curves. This work shows that the analytical performances of the electrochemical PCR compete now with its commercial fluorescence-based counterparts on several aspects: limit of detection (sub-attomolar of DNA), sensitivity (few nanomoles of DNA per liter), large calibration range (several orders of magnitude) and reproducibility. Notably, the obtained electrochemical melting curves allowed to differentiate many genetic variants (such as SNP and heterozygous sample) and to follow proteins conformational fluctuations to evaluate their thermal stability (depending on the biological matrix and/or the addition of ligands). To conclude, this work is a key stepping stone toward the commercialization of a robust and low¬cost electrochemical instrument offering a wide range of applications and able to compete on the PCR devices market

Full textIn Bergson’s school of thought the knowledge of the inside world is achieved through intuition, and in the Surrealism artistic movement it’s through the “voyage of imagination” that one achieves the discovery of the reality beyond this world. The former reaches the concept of “duration”, while the result of the latter’s poetic efforts is the dissolution of logic and the moving of the boundaries of time and space. In his philosophical musings, Bergson discovers the true form of the “duration” which is the curved line, a movement based on grace and the union of the three tenses. At the same time, the surrealist artists will reach through their poetic and artistic creation something that is very similar to Bergson’s philosophy. It is then that Julien Gracq’s analysis about surrealism being closer to Bergson than to Freud becomes meaningful to us.That being in consideration, the aim of this work will be to reveal the close proximity between the surrealist artists and Bergson, and doing so identify the place of the bergsonian “duration” and its spatio-temporal qualities, namely “continuity in time” and “simultaneity”, in surrealist art. This research, entitled “Esthetics of the curve in surrealist poetry” aims to bring the evidence of the presence of the concept of the curve and its formal and internal qualities like fluidity, graciousness and the serpentine and cyclic qualities, in the art and poetry of the surrealism

Full textSince high technology progress decreases system dimensions, it is necessarily to understand their physical properties. Therefore, this work contributes in the thermal property knowledge. Numerical simulations are then done to predict heat transfer. To achieve this request, Boltzmann transfer equation is solved, using the discrete ordinate method. Since nanowires and nanofilms are frequently found in microelectronics, their geometries are studied. Furthermore, heat carrier spectral dependence is taken into account trough their velocities and relaxation times. In a first hand, steady state results are used to define thermal properties. It is shown that, in nanowires, diffusive regime is always observed whereas, in films, Fourier’s law can only be used for thickness greater than 1 m, at ambient temperature. For lower temperatures or thicknesses, heat transfers are governed by ballistic phenomena. Finally, taken into account spectral dependences allow us to predict heat transfer at small time scales. It is then viewed that conduction heat transfers in ballistic regime have two temperature waves due to phonon polarizations

Full textDiffuse optical tomography (DOT) is an emerging medical imaging technique using near-infrared light to probe biological tissues. This technique can retrieve three-dimensional maps of absorption and scattering coefficients inside organs from non-invasive measurements. With a multispectral approach, the spatial distribution of endogenous chromophores (hemoglobin, water) can even be obtained. For some clinical applications, it is desirable to carry out the measurements for DOT with a compact probe including all sources and detectors. However, the depth sensitivity is a real challenge in this configuration. We propose to tackle this challenge by using time-resolved measurements. A time-resolved approach is developed to perform DOT with reflectance measurements at short source-detector separation. This approach involves methodological aspects including the processing of time-resolved signals by DOT algorithms based on the Mellin-Laplace transform. Then, this approach consists in optimizing the detection chain on two aspects for enhancing the detection and localization of absorption contrast in depth in diffusive media. First, the impact of the temporal response of the detector is studied with commercially available single-photon detectors (classical and hybrid photomultipliers). Second, the enhancements in probed depth permitted with fast-gated single-photon avalanche diodes are explored in a joint work with the Politecnico di Milano. To finish, a study is carried out to illustrate the performance of the proposed approach with respect to spatial resolution in depth for different configurations of sources and detectors in the optical probe. Probes with a width limited to a few centimeters open the gate to multiple clinical interests. They could access intern organs like the prostate or facilitate the measurements on extern organs like the breast or the brain

Full textThis dissertation is a case-study that deals with the thematic of collective pedagogical work among teachers-trainers from a course of Pedagogy at a private institution of higher education. Through the analysis of documents, it presents the history of the course to demonstrate the presence of the thematic as a value projected in training teachers. Through semi-structured interviews with the teachers who composed the center of the course and the coordinator, it investigates and elucidates times and spaces for the realization of collective pedagogical work as dynamic movement that alternates between disposals arrangements of the institution and inventions of the teachers. The practices of collective pedagogical work are situated in the informality context. They are invented by the teachers and signal conditions for enlargement within the context of institutional offers. The collective pedagogical work is presented as fundamental principle in teachers training due to the loaded conditions for promoting the reduction of isolation within the educational practices, in scholar and nonscholar environments.

Full textWhat shall we properly call mathematic? and what is properly meant in greek by the words mathesis or mathemata? rene descartes raised nearly the same questions as he asked himself about the true mathematic (la veritable mathematique) in his regulae ad directionem ingenii. The main interest of this question is the following : while descartes claims that the true mathematic is obvious (obvious enough to be considered as an all-embracing knowledge), he is soon led to speak about it as a secret (le secret de l'art), as if it was impossible to point out the obviousness of this veritable mathematiquue. But if descartes failed to tell us what is truly meant by "mathematic", this failure was not fruitless, and generally speaking we see this failure as characterising the proper meaning of this greek word : while asking these questions, we not only encounter the impossibility to answer it, but above all the strange fact is that this failure leads us to do something without being able to tell clearly what we are thus doing - or better undergoing. We call this tragic experience, to enter the secret of learning. This means to go through learning which is not knowing a learning that we don't control and that makes us change. To undergo such a change is to undergo what aristotle calls in his physics the "move of all" (kinesis tou holou), a kind of total change which is deep enough to remove any landmark, including the own identity of who undergoes this change. Aristole says again that this "move of all" is the ancient meaning of time (chronos). Accordingly, there is a deep relationship between learning conceived as uncontrolled and the fact of undergoing time, i. E. Change. This link between time and mathematic allows us to understand the latter

Full textThe two main predictions of quantum field theory in curved space-time, namely Hawking radiation and cosmological pair production, have not been directly tested and involve ultra high energy configurations. As a consequence, they should be considered with caution. Using the analogy with condensed matter systems put forward by Unruh, their analogue versions could be tested in the lab. Moreover, the high energy behavior of these systems is known and involved dispersion and dissipation, which regulate the theory at short distances. When considering experiments which aim to test the above predictions, the thermal noise will contaminate the outcome. Indeed, there will be a competition between the stimulated emission from thermal noise and the spontaneous emission out of vacuum. In order to measure the quantum analogue Hawking radiation, or the analogue pair production also called dynamical Casimir effect, one should thus compute the consequences of ultraviolet dispersion and dissipation, and identify observables able to establish that the spontaneous emission took place. In this thesis, we first analyze the effects of dispersion and dissipation on both Hawking radiation and pair particle production. To get explicit results, we work in the context of de Sitter space. Using the extended symmetries of the theory in such a background, exact results are obtained. These are then transposed to the context of black holes using the correspondence between de Sitter space and the black hole near horizon region. To introduce dissipation, we consider an exactly solvable model producing any decay rate. In such a model, the field is linearly coupled to an environment containing a dense set of degrees of freedom. We also study the quantum entanglement of the particles so produced. In a second part, we consider explicit condensed matter systems, namely Bose Einstein condensates and exciton-polariton systems. We analyze the effects of dissipation on entanglement produced by the dynamical Casimir effect. As a final step, we study the entanglement of Hawking radiation in the presence of dispersion for a generic analogue system

Full textPertinent analysis of the information embedded in modern instrumental measurements requires the development of efficient mathematical and statistical tools. ln spectroscopy, various tools have been proposed in such purpose. The aim of this thesis is to participate to these developments in order to characterize the spectra and concentration profiles of the compounds involved in photoinduced reactions monitored by time-resolved spectroscopy. A first part of this work is related to the rank analysis of difference data. A systematic rank deficiency has been demonstrated in this case. An approach based on a hybrid algorithm is proposed as a solution to this problem. lndeed the introduction of a kinetic model compensates this rank deficiency. A second part of the work deals with the characterisation of the noise influence (firstly on measurement and then on multivariate resolution). An analysis of the correlations structure of the noise permit to explain the overfitting phenomenon observed with soft modelling methods. A second algorithm solves this problem through a weighting scheme involving an estimation of the measurement error. These points are illustrated by two applications: first, a contribution to the analysis of the reaction centre of Rhodobacter sphaeroides by FTIR spectroscopy; then the study of the benzophenone photorelaxation by transient absorption spectroscopy

Full textThe Tour de France was widespread by media among people regardless of their social origine thus becoming part of the French civilization. Therefore this major cycling competition emerged as one of the main sights of the mass culture development in France. Furthermore around this society phenomenon a real “culture Tour de France” was developed, keeping up the cult of the road giant achievements and eventually allowing the cycling competition to be part of the french popular culture. Since 1903, the Tour de France has gone through different periods. Created to sell more newspapers, it soon became part of the Revanche arsenal, showing a route similar to a rampart walk. From its image of “road slaves” the cyclic competition inverted the tendency and gave the image of a winning France in the thirties. After the Second Word War it became part of the national heritage. Then in a context of openness to Europe, of cold war and the growth of a leisure civilization, the Tour de France had adapted itself to those social cultural change in order to keep on exiting. Nowadays thanks to TV it has managed to be part of the globalisation stream, henceforth it refuses the Third Industrial Revolution values, denouncing the doping phenomenon

Full textGustave Courbet's hunting pictures differ profoundly from hunting realites that perceive the french huntersof the 19th century. If this difference can be explained by the contemporary need to achieve a "post-mortem" painting, using died game, photography and taxidermy, it also shows a very ambiguous relationship pf Courbet to the french classical hunting, which seems to create, on the part of the painter, a real "negation", in the psychoanalytic meaning of this word. In fact, Courbet remains fundamentally one of these peasant-owners, who were granted the right to hunt in 1789, but which, because of the scarcity of the game after the revolution, were reduced to hunt especially small game and to shoot with hunting hounds. Quite different from that of Courbet is the contemporary German hunting painting, including the Deutsches Jagdmaler-Album of Hegewald, published in 1881, allows us to discover twenty-six of the most famous authors. This painting is organized to according to a typology that allows to identify twelve different types : from the painting of history to the illustration of a text, including landscape painting, still life, portrait, genre painting, etc. Four themes are privileged : the "Jagdidylle", this representation of the love hunter, the "Wilderer", a mythical figure of the mountains, the "Sonntagsjäger", this caricature of hunting amateurism, and the "röhrender Hirsch" become an archetype of kitsch. But this painting is also distinguished by its "naturalism" marked by academic conventions, just opposite of the innovative "realism" of some german painters such as Leibl and Sperl, deeply marked by the deconstructive force of the french Courbet. He literally sprays different types of hunting painting and manifest all his liberty. The liberty of dreaming. His "Spring rut" sounds of premonitory way, the end of braemer, of the "röhrender Hirsch" in hunting pictures. .

Full textTime versus velocity relationship for running exercises : applications to training. Calculation of the relationships between time limit (tlim) and velocity (tlim=f(V)) allows the determination of the critical velocity (Cv) and anaerobic distance capacity (ADC). The aims of this thesis were 1) to explain the variability of time limit when exercise intensity is expressed as a percentage of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), 2) to analyse the influence of the equation used to fit the tlim=f(V) relationship on the Cv and ADC parameters, 3) to determine the effects of a high intensity training program on the Cv and ADC parameters, with regard to changes in ventilatory threshold (Vtresh) and maximal accumulated oxygen deficit. The first study demonstrated that exercise intensity individualized according to Cv and maximal velocity allowed to reduce the interindividual tlim variability. The second study confirms the influence of the mathematical model on the Cv and ADC parameters determination. The Cv calculated with the 3 component hyperbolic model was not significantly different from Vtresh. In the last study, the training program allowed a significant improvement of Cv and ADC. However, the magnitude of the improvement depends on the mathematical model used. Significant relationships were found between changes in Cv (linear model) and changes in VO2max. In an in-the-field perspective, the linear model seems to be the most interesting for coaches or physical education teachers

This dissertation is the result of a research for Masters in Education in the line of social movements, and has as its theme the organization of time and space in the draft curriculum of the course of Buildings of IFPA. It aims to analyze the relationship between time and space in the curriculum in action of the course of Buildings of the PROEJA (Programa Nacional de IntegraÃÃo da EducaÃÃo Profissional com a EducaÃÃo BÃsica, in the form EJA), offered by IFPA. It aims to identify the concepts and principles that addresses the new forms of organization of the curriculum PROEJA; to identify the relationships between time and space in curriculum development; and also to identify the methodologies that meet the needs of students over time and space in PROEJA. Uses a qualitative methodological approach, in which it was based on a literature on the subject, with the purpose of the theoretical basis involving the problem. Presents a reflection and analysis of official documents on the subject. Parallel to the second step, applies questionnaires to students and teachers who are part of the course in focus. At this phase, it objectives to characterize the subjects in the personal aspects and level of knowledge about the program. Approaches the development focus group, at first with students and then with teachers who conversed on the subject, encouraged to talk about their experiences involving the school. Verifies that the approachment allowed to the participants a better interaction, favoring the exchange of information. Uses as theoretical and documentary support the studies of Arroyo, Lima, Dante Henrique Moura, Maria Ciavatta, Frigotto and Freire; also the Educational Project of the course of Buildings of IFPA for PROEJA and other official documents that underlie the program. As a result of the analysis of documents and plans to travel PROEJA performed in this work, emphasizes that the concept of integration from the axis Science, Culture, Work and Technology are closer to the actions of individuals, teachers, students, managers who design integration of knowledge, as suggested by the Base Document PROEJA. Concludes that in the course plans and their policies there is no manifestation of integration across disciplines to create new knowledge or knowledge embedded in the organization beyond the disciplinary hierarchy of content. What is found in the curricular requirements are forecasts that integration should occur from a dialogue between the disciplines and the exchange of experiences among teachers. Reveals, at last, that the materialization of the concept of integration in individual stocks and methodological far the discussion needed to break the barriers between different areas and teachers from different disciplines and the possibilities of integration between the different theorists.

The present work has the purpose of understanding the institution of Special Federal Courts - JEFs - in Brazil, under a deceptively intricate dilemma that puts the judiciary between the choice of effectiveness or efficiency. On one hand, it builds up a Judiciary that is inserted in the management paradigm of the public administration, the system extends its scope and justice and more specifically the process / procedure gets that same managerial orientation. It is embodied in this way a justice system geared for acceleration, standardization and choice, driven by efficiency, production and flow. Forge is a justice system hypermodern - neoliberal , concerned to meet the market demands , forgetting the fundamental and human rights of its citizens. This logic should be reversed in the quest for building a democratic constitutional processualism born of constitutionality. For this, the procedure of JEFs must be founded on reconciliation, which provides the speed chained in substantiveness the will of the parties , namely, informality , simplicity , orality and consensual . This provides the coming- to -talk - of conflicting parties in the process and building a legal response - consensually anchored in the conflict in the dialogue of differences - Luis Alberto Warat . In this sense , this response comes amid a horizon - consensual understanding earlier that binds to the constitutional tradition that marks the contemporary Brazil . This meeting comprised in consensual environment of JEFs with pre - understood in constitutional environment - tradition - of Hermeneutical Critique of Law - Lenio Luiz Streck - by philosophical hermeneutics / hermeneutic philosophy - Hans Georg Gadamer / Martin Heidegger - and by integrity and coherence in law / right - Ronald Dworkin . So from this symbiosis it is possible to build a democratic -constitutional anti-modern procedural environment that from the experience of JEFs, allows the happening of constitutionally correct answers consensually jurisconstructed - Jose Luis Bolzan de Morais.

Full textThe Abel-Jacobi map links the short Weierstrass form of a complex elliptic curve to the complex torus associated to it. One can compute it with a number of operations which is quasi-linear in the target precision, i.e. in time O(M(P) log P). Its inverse is given by Weierstrass's p-function, which can be written as a function of theta, an important function in number theory. The natural algorithm for evaluating theta requires O(M(P) sqrt(P)) operations, but some values (the theta-constants) can be computed in O(M(P) log P) operations by exploiting the links with the arithmetico-geometric mean (AGM). In this manuscript, we generalize this algorithm in order to compute theta in O(M(P) log P). We give a function F which has similar properties to the AGM. As with the algorithm for theta-constants, we can then use Newton's method to compute the value of theta. We implemented this algorithm, which is faster than the naive method for precisions larger than 300,000 decimal digits. We then study the generalization of this algorithm in higher genus, and in particular how to generalize the F function. In genus 2, we managed to prove that the same method leads to a O(M(P) log P) algorithm for theta; the same complexity applies to the Abel-Jacobi map. This algorithm is faster than the naive method for precisions smaller than in genus 1, of about 3,000 decimal digits. We also outline a way one could reach the same complexity in any genus. Finally, we study a new algorithm which computes an isogeny of elliptic curves with given kernel. This algorithm uses the Abel-Jacobi map because it is easy to evaluate the isogeny on the complex torus; this algorithm may be generalizable to higher genera
