Full textBifaces industries from the middle pleistocene in northern and western europe are defined by a great diversity, and are considered as intricated phenomenous. Their variability is given by the knapping methods and by the intern composition of flake-tools and heavy-tools. Even if those industries are difficult to understand, they show numerous commun points with the industries of the tamise valley, with the african and near east sites. At the opposit, the sites from southern france, southern europe and central europe are differents from ours, because they don't have many bifaces and the heavy-tools dominate the floke-tools. There is no fixed pattern about the evolution or devloppement between tools and the knapping methods during this period. The interpretation of this variability is still mysterious, bacause a lot of informations can be retained (environment), specialized areas, way of life, choice of the knapper, traditions. . . )

Hamburg, bremen and lubeck replaced the dutch, to some extent, during the several maritime wars between the united provinces and france. Full textThe anthropogenic impact of the raise of atmospheric CO2 has been observed on the global oceanic scale, resulting in the Ocean Acidification (OA). Largely present in the coastal ecosystems, a decrease of their population could have significant socio-economic consequences. Coastal ecosystems represent only 7% of the global ocean but host a third of the total primary production of the oceans, playing a key role in the global carbon cycle. They are highly diversified and influenced by continental inputs, which complexifies the study of the CO2 cycle. This PhD thesis investigated at different spatial and temporal scales the variability of the carbon cycle in megatidal environments of the North Western European Shelves. From 2015 to 2019, we installed an autonomous sensor of pCO2 (Sunburst SAMI-CO2) on a cardinal buoy located off Roscoff, in the south of the English Channel. Coupled with additional proximal and offshore observations of the carbon cycle and biogeochemical parameters, we were able to describe precisely this ecosystem and assess the tidal, diurnal and interannual variability. Secondly, we followed the variability of these parameters at the decadal scale, based on regular sampling from 2008 to 2018 in two coastal environments very close geographically (Brest and Roscoff, NWES), but with different freshwater influence. Finally, since methane is increasingly considered as a key player in the understanding of the coastal ecosystem functioning and Climatically-Actives Gas cycles, we quantified the driving processes of CO2 and CH4 air-sea exchanges in two mega-tidal estuaries influencing our study region

Full textSince 1995, the European Union try to find solutions to impulse the Short-Sea-Shipping (SSS) and a transfer of freight from haulage to balance the modal split between transports in Europe. The “Sea ways” are a more ecological alternative than haulage, and a solution to prevent the highways saturation. Otherwise, the characteristics of international maritime transport make the SSS not only an option but also an economic necessity to develop, or to preserve, the maritime and port’s activities. The SSS may to be an important freight traffic source. We analyzed haulage flux between 112 cities of Iberia peninsula and northwest Europe, which may to be the source of freight to SSS from an eventual haulage transfer. We identified three main (expedition/reception) zones of haulage freight, which may furnish the main volumes. We developed a model of “modal choice” to compare between unimodal and combined transport alternatives. We applied this model in the case of haulage and SSS costs competition. The concentration of competitive SSS links on ports might us to define a SSS development potential to 57 ports. The distribution of haulage flux, allow us to identify some SSS lines between “high potential” ports. Finally, we build a scenario, based on a 30% haulage transfer supposition, and we have assigned the freight volumes to SSS identified lines. Even if SSS is competitive and his development is economically feasible, a politic will and investments of European Union are necessaries to impulse it in effective way

Full textThis dissertation aims at analysing the representations and conceptions of the sea in North-Western Europe. It mainly focuses on areas stretching along the Channel, the North Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean, during the transitional period between Central Middle Ages and Modern Times. The study firstly considers scholarly perspectives over the sea. Generally speaking, scholars only knew it through ancient sciences and the Scriptures. They were mainly interested in the movement of waves, nautical practices and the mysteries of the deep sea. In spite of knowledge advances at the time, the sea was still conceived of as a periphery of the world). Secondly, the emphasis will be laid on those living by the sea and their perception of it. From their point of view, the coastal environment was characterized by both the danger of flood and the opportunity of getting extra resources. Finally, the sailors’ standpoints will be examined. To them, the sea was an open space where time was somehow dilated. As far as the European sovereigns were concerned, they gradually regarded the sea as a connecting route. At the very end) of the Middle Ages, not only was the sea considered as useful, but also as necessary. Thus, what may be called a mental appropriation of the sea progressively took place in the 13th-15th century period, eventually leading to the crossing of the Ocean and the huge fleets of the modern period
