International Conference on Gears 2017. VDI Verlag, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.51202/9783181022948.

Abstract:
Talking about the design of modern high-performance power train applications, one of the essential components to focus on are the gears. Gears convert torque and speed in a very wide power range, at low cost and with minimal losses and noise emission. However, the demands regarding cost, power density, NVH-behavior and efficiency are steadily increasing. Demands, which can only be met using modern gearing technologies that allow combining individual materials, heat treatment and manufacturing processes. Particularly in the industrial sector, the requirements for the reliability and service life of the gear units have increased. Therefore, more and more accurate calculation methods are required for the load bearing capacity, life expectancy and failure probability as well as better test methods. This aspect is also becoming more important with regard to Industry 4.0 and Predictive Maintenance. In addition, the potentials of innovative production methods like powder metal sintering, plas...

Leino, Päivi. The Politics of Efficient Compromise in the Adoption of EU Legal Acts. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198817468.003.0003.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the interplay between the formal and informal rules relating to the adoption of legislative acts, and the effects that this interplay has on participation and transparency in EU law-making. It discusses the relationship between the claimed objectivity of the choices relating to legal basis and their institutional implications through the Court jurisprudence, with a focus on inter-institutional power relations. The current emphasis on efficiency, guaranteed through the flexibility built into the informal rules of law-making, brings to the fore many fundamental questions relating to participation, transparency, and power in the adoption of EU legal acts. In short, efficiency comes at a cost to many other objectives that the Treaty of Lisbon was believed to strengthen. The relevant political question is whether the balance created by today’s informal law-making framework is the right one.

Abstract:
As we look to the evolving health care industry with improved care quality, health outcomes, and cost parameters, the demands of the critical care environment require a transformation. Technology, process, and people are at the centre of this transformation. The power is in the knowledge that can be achieved and the process improvements that can be made through automation. Five major areas of technology evolution include workflow automation, information exchange, clinical decision support, and predictive modelling, remote monitoring, and data analytics. If designed properly, technology can result in doing things differently (better) and doing different things. Information exchange is required for quality and efficient critical care information delivery. Data analytics will use information for comparative effectiveness, registry reporting, population management, and research study recruiting.

Davies, Paul. Control Shifts via Share Acquisition Contracts with Shareholders (Takeovers). Edited by Jeffrey N. Gordon and Wolf-Georg Ringe. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198743682.013.28.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the regulatory issues that arise when there is an offer to acquire shares directly from one or more shareholders of a company such that control of that company shifts to the acquirer. It begins with a comparison between control shifts implemented by contract and corporate transactions which produce the same result. It identifies three principal areas where contract may need to be supplemented by takeover-specific rules arising out of the coordination costs of target shareholders, powers of target management, and agency costs of non-controlling shareholders. It then considers how takeover regulation could be fashioned so as to promote efficient and discourage inefficient transfers of control. The chapter concludes by focusing on the choices actually made in four countries: Japan, Germany, UK, and the United States.

Scales, Peter C., and Eugene C. Roehlkepartain. The Contribution of Nonfamily Adults to Adolescent Well-Being. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190847128.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents an extensive literature review and data from a sample of more than 30,000 children and youth from 30 countries, showing that young people worldwide do not experience an adequate level of developmental relationships with nonfamily adults that feature (a) care, (b) challenge, (c) support, (d) sharing of power with adults, and (e) expansion of young people’s possibilities. Young people who experience high-quality developmental relationships with nonfamily adults are significantly better off on a variety of well-being indicators, including positive identity, workforce readiness, educational attainment, spiritual development, and sexual responsibility. It is concluded that nonfamily adults represent a vast, largely untapped, resource for positive youth development and well-being globally. Implementing policies and practices to measure, track, and build those developmental relationships may be a relatively low-cost way to both promote youth well-being and efficiently multiply the positive impact of existing international aid and humanitarian investments.

Brandsma, Gijs Jan, and Jens Blom-Hansen. Theorizing Delegation and Control Regimes in the EU. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198767909.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents the book’s theoretical argument. Building on the delegation literature and principal-agent theory, it argues that legislative principals delegate to reduce transaction costs. However, they delegate with hesitance because they fear that delegated powers may be used for unintended purposes. This dilemma between efficiency and control is partly resolved by installing monitoring mechanisms. However, since control implies influence on future decisions to be made by the agent, the principals are likely to disagree on their exact design. There is therefore a ‘multiple principals’ problem in the design and use of control regimes. In the post-Lisbon EU, the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament may choose between the delegated acts and the implementing acts control regime. Since these two regimes provide them with different control positions, they are likely to disagree on their use. This fundamental conflict is the key to understanding post-Lisbon institutional contestation of delegation.
