<p align="LEFT">The present paper stems from a contrastive corpus-based study of phraseology in Spanish, Italian and English criminal judgments (Pontrandolfo 2013).</p><p align="LEFT">By exploring the Corpus of Criminal Judgments (COSPE), a large comparable trilingual corpus (Spanish, Italian, English) of approximately 6 million words, the present paper aims at investigating the close relationship among specialised discourse, discourse markers and translation.</p><p align="LEFT">The focus of the study is on special particles which play a pivotal role in judicial texts: “contrargumentative markers” (Portolés 1998, Montolío 2001) or “antioriented argumentative markers” (Escandell 2013), which, following Rudolph (1996) have been labeled “argumentative markers of contrast”.</p><p align="LEFT">The primary objective of the paper is to carry out a quantitative analysis of the distribution of this type of discourse markers in COSPE, as well as a qualitative analysis aimed at characterising the markers uses in COSPE and identifying trends of use in judicial discourse. The secondary objective, which nevertheless guides the whole study, is to carry out a legal translation-oriented analysis. Indeed, studying discourse markers is a necessary precondition for translators, since the semantic and pragmatic relations conveyed by these particles and their distributional differences represent the guidelines for the selection of adequate translation solutions (cf. Visconti 2000, Garofalo 2006).</p><p align="LEFT">From a methodological point of view, the study combines a qualitative approach oriented at the discourse genre (cf. Bhatia 1993, Garofalo 2009) with a more qualiquantitative approach based on corpus linguistics, more specifi cally on corpus-assisted discourse studies (Partington 2004, Partington et al. 2013).</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper describes a new automatic layout algorithm named CoSEP for compound graphs with port constraints. The algorithm works by extending the physical model of a previous algorithm named CoSE by defining additional force types and heuristics for constraining edges to connect to certain user-defined locations on end nodes. Similar to its predecessor, CoSEP also accounts for non-uniform node dimensions and arbitrary levels of nesting via compound nodes. Our experiments show that CoSEP significantly improves the quality of the layouts for compound graphs with port constraints with respect to commonly accepted graph drawing criteria while running reasonably fast, suitable for use in interactive applications for small to medium-sized (up to 500 nodes) graphs. A complete JavaScript implementation of CoSEP as a Cytoscape.js extension along with a demo page is freely available at https://github.com/iVis-at-Bilkent/cytoscape.js-cosep .

Abstract:
2011/2012
The present thesis deals with the complex universe of phraseology in its broader sense, from a contrastive (Spanish-Italian-English), quantitative and qualitative perspective. The main goal of the research has been performing an empirical study of specialised phraseological units in a specific type of judicial genre, i.e., criminal judgments, with the final aim of providing legal translators dealing with criminal procedure with a multifunctional tool having a positive impact on the translation process and product. More specifically, it aimed at assisting legal translators (as well as legal experts) to develop their phraseological competence, guiding them to achieve ‘naturalness’ in their texts through their exposure to real, authentic (con)texts in which these phraseological units are used. A trilingual, comparable corpus of judicial texts has been built, i.e. the Corpus of Criminal Judgments (COSPE), from which phraseologisms have been extracted and analysed by means of concordancers (mainly WordSmith Tools v 5.0). Emphasis has been placed on four key types of recurrent phraseological units in COSPE: complex prepositions, lexical doublets and triplets, lexical collocations and routine formulae.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Consumption of fuelwood, mainly in the form of wood chips, is growing to achieve the goal fixed by the “Grenelle de l’Environment” Laws. Increasing wood chip production needs more and more raw materials and use of wood chippers or shredders is well established. These machines are very energy-consuming particularly in gasoline. First, this thesis presents original methods for measuring chipper performance and focuses on influence of cutting parameters on energy efficiency. Wood chipper energy performance is defined by the ratio between tonnes of dry wood chips and power consumed by the machine to produce them. Using energy efficiency determination method, all wood chippers will be compared and will help customer to choose the machine that consumes the least energy to produce wood chips. Wood chipper performance is measured at two different locations: one closer to the cutting area and the other at the wood chipper drive. The results show that wood chipper performance factor is properly defined and cutting parameters impacts wood chip performance. Cutting optimization halves the chipper fuel consumption to produce the same wood chips quantity. The results also show the limits of safeguard that reduce by 40% chipper performance. This thesis must help designers for developing more efficient machines to reduce their impact on the environment

Abstract:
Distribution, habitat use and survival of transplanted Columbian sharp-tailed grouse in the Tobacco Plains, Montana were studied from April, 1990 to August, 1991. For transplant purposes, 12 grouse (5 female and 7 male) were trapped on dancing grounds near Douglas Lake, British Columbia, Canada during spring, 1990. In April, 1991, trapping of 4 female and 2 male grouse for transplant occurred on the Sand Creek Wildlife Management Area in southeast Idaho while 3 additional males were transplanted from Douglas Lake. Minimum annual survival of transplanted grouse in the Tobacco Plains is relatively high (47%). High survival is possible due to 2 factors: 1) topography and habitat characteristics that discourage dispersal and 2) the presence of limited but relatively good habitat. Two of 18 radio-equipped grouse dispersed out of the study area, while 2 others survived in the area for over 590 days. A negative correlation in distances moved between consecutive relocations and length of survival was seen in radio-equipped grouse in this study. Data collected during this study showed the importance of habitat associated with the Dancing Prairie Preserve. Three of 5 females transplanted in 1990 attempted to nest after being released. Nesting and brood rearing sites were characterized by dense grass cover with an average effective height > or = 20 cm. Shrub cover was associated only with brood rearing sites. Overall habitat use by transplanted Columbian Sharp-tailed grouse showed an apparent avoidance of agricultural land and use of other habitat types in proportion to their availability.

Abstract:
In aeronautical sector, assembly of CFRP composite structures requires the drilling of the fastener holes. Requirements of reliability, productivity and machining quality are imposed on the drilling process. The operation must be mastered, which requires a better understanding of the phenomena occurring during drilling. But the study of these phenomena faces several major challenges such as the confined aspect of the operation, the complex and variable geometry of the cutting tool, the speed variation along the main cutting edge... To overcome these obstacles, elementary testing representative of the drilling cutting phenomena could be implemented. This is the purpose of this work, which is based on three axes. The first is a study of the geometrical and kinematic representativeness of the elementary tests regarding the drilling operation. A tool geometry identification program is developed. It identifies the evolution of the local geometry of cutting tools along the main cutting edges and allows defining the elementary tests that are geometrically and kinematically representative of the drilling cutting. The second axis developed proposes a study of the phenomena occuring in quasi-static orthogonal cutting. Thus, the effects relative to the cutting speed are not considered. In this context, digital image correlation tests during orthogonal cutting are conducted. They lead to the analysis of the displacements and strains fields. Generated forces, chip morphology and machined surface texture are also investigated, in relation to the rake angle and the angle ?2 between the cutting speed and the direction of fibres. For this configuration, two types of numerical models, a macro-mechanical and a micro-mechanical one, are developed. A comparison is made in relation to experimental results. The last axis of this work concern the analysis of phenomena related to the cutting speed during orthogonal cutting. The macro-mechanical model is modified to include such phenomena as the variation of the matrix breaking stress as a function of strain rate, or the evolution of the friction coefficient according to the sliding velocity. The model results are compared to experimental results
