Abstract:
To build on the research of strategic management we conducted an empirical study in the context of international performance. Three principal strategies, according to Porters generic strategy theory: cost leadership cost-focus and differentiation respectively, were tested in our research model. Quantitative empirical analysis of international strategy on a sample of 58 Chinese firms was conducted to determine strategies that lead to enhanced strategic performance. We utilized survey strategy encompassing questionnaire data collection. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS statistical package. Inference statistics consisting of correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed. Findings of the study suggest that cost leadership and differentiation strategies impact strategic performance significantly, whereas cost-focus does not. A value of appropriate international business strategy is illustrated by supporting a relationship between strategy and international performance. The originality of contributions of the study lies in the fact that the generic business strategies’ impact on strategic performance is tested on an international market on the sample of Chinese firms. These notions enrich existing body of knowledge on strategic management. Therefore, companies conducting their business operations internationally should consider forming and implementing strategies of differentiation and cost leadership to achieve optimal business results.

Full text
Abstract:
MEG/EEG beamformer source imaging is a promising approach which can easily address spatiotemporal multi-dipole problems without a priori information on the number of sources and is robust to noise. Despite such promise, beamformer generally has weakness which is degrading localization performance for correlated sources and is requiring of dense scanning for covering all possible interesting (entire) source areas. Wide source space scanning yields all interesting area images, and it results in lengthy computation time. Therefore, an efficient source space scanning strategy would be beneficial in achieving accelerated beamformer source imaging. We propose a new strategy in computing beamformer to reduce scanning points and still maintain effective accuracy (good spatial resolution). This new strategy uses the distribution of correlation values between measurements and lead-field vectors. Scanning source points are chosen yielding higher RMS correlations than the predetermined correlation thresholds. We discuss how correlation thresholds depend on SNR and verify the feasibility and efficacy of our proposed strategy to improve the beamformer through numerical and empirical experiments. Our proposed strategy could in time accelerate the conventional beamformer up to over 40% without sacrificing spatial accuracy.

Abstract:
Purpose – The cornerstone of Modern Portfolio Theory with implications for many aspects of corporate finance is that reduced correlation among assets and reduced standard deviation are key elements in portfolio risk reduction. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the conditional correlation and standard deviation of a broad set of indices with the S & P 500 conditioned on market performance. Design/methodology/approach – The authors examined volatility and correlation for a set of indices for a 19-year period based on weekly data from July 2, 1993 to June 30, 2012. These included the NASDAQ, MSCI EAFE, Russell 1000, Russell 2000, Russell 3000, Russell 1000 Growth, Russell 1000 Value, Gold, MSCI EM and Dow Jones UBS Commodity. The data for the Wilshire US REIT, Barclays Multiverse, Multiverse 1-3, Multiverse 3-5 and Multiverse 10+ became available starting July 2, 2002. For these indices the authors used weekly data from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2012. For the iBarclays TIPS, the authors used weekly data from the time of availability, namely, for the period December 12, 2003 through June 29, 2012. Findings – The findings demonstrate that both the conditional correlations and standard deviations vary as a function of market performance. Moreover, the authors obtain a U-shape distribution of correlations conditioned on market performance for equity indices, such as NASDAQ, as well as for the Wilshire REIT. Namely, correlations tend to be high when market returns are at low or high extremes. For more typical market performance, correlations tend to be low. A modified U-shape is found for bond indices and the Dow Jones UBS Commodity Index. Interestingly, the correlation between gold and the S & P 500 is unrelated to the return on the S & P. Originality/value – While it has been observed that asset classes move together, this paper is the first to systematically analyze the nature of these asset class correlations.

Abstract:
AbstractEquity basket correlation can be estimated both using the physical measure from stock prices, and also using the risk neutral measure from option prices. The difference between the two estimates motivates a so-called “dispersion strategy”. We study the performance of this strategy on the German market and propose several profitability improvement schemes based on implied correlation (IC) forecasts. Modelling IC conceals several challenges. Firstly the number of correlation coefficients would grow with the size of the basket. Secondly, IC is not constant over maturities and strikes. Finally, IC changes over time. We reduce the dimensionality of the problem by assuming equicorrelation. The IC surface (ICS) is then approximated from the implied volatilities of stocks and the implied volatility of the basket. To analyze the dynamics of the ICS we employ a dynamic semiparametric factor model.

Abstract:
<p>This article mainly solves the problems that exist when using the Kernel Correlation Filter (KCF) for tracking in complex scenarios. To make the algorithm suitable for target tracking under complex conditions such as scale changes, similar interference, and occlusion, a MobileNet SSD (Single Shot Detection) target detection combined with an improved KCF target tracking algorithm is proposed. Firstly, the MobileNet SSD is used to locate the target in the initial frame, and the location is sent to KCF for training. Secondly, aiming at the problem of scale changes, a Binary-Tree scale search strategy is proposed. In this strategy, the scale value is searched in a tree shape according to the response size, which reduces the number of scale searches. Finally, the average peak correlation energy is used for occlusion determination, and the model update strategy is improved, thereby enhancing the algorithm’s ability to track occluded targets. The results of experimental evaluation and comparison on the OTB100 and UAV123 data sets show that when the target has complex conditions such as scale changes, similar interference, occlusion, etc., the proposed algorithm performs well in mainstream related filtering algorithms. Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the experimental results, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Abstract:
Implicit theories about the nature of human attributes as either malleable or fixed influence how people perceive knowledge and approach different tasks. Two studies explored the relationship between implicit theory of writing ability, metacognitive strategy knowledge (MSK), and strategy use in the context of academic writing. The pre-study with N = 51 university students revealed a significant correlation between students’ implicit theories and their MSK. Self-reported quality and diversity of strategy use, assessed by open-ended questions, were not significantly associated with students’ implicit theories. Expanding strategy use measures, study 2 ( N = 133) found significant correlations between a more malleable theory and more frequent use of metacognitive strategies. Confirming the results of the pre-study, the results of study 2 showed that a more malleable theory of writing ability was directly associated with higher MSK. In sum, the results illustrate the importance of linking implicit theories to self-regulated learning.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to examine the relationship between the correlation among the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and overall returns on the broader market from 1950 to 2008. Design/methodology/approach – The paper computes historical correlation of the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and future returns on the S&P 500 index over various windows and examines the relationship between these two items using linear regression analysis. In addition, the paper develops a trading strategy based on the results. Findings – The paper finds that increased equity correlation serves as a leading indicator of overall market decline. Regression analysis shows that equity correlations are a statistically significant predictor of market decline, as measured by subsequent returns of the S&P 500 index. The significance of the results increases as the time horizon of the calculation is increased. With the exception of the 1990s, the findings are robust within decades. Originality/value – This is the first study that examines the relationship between the historical correlations among the Dow 30 stocks with future returns for the S&P 500 index. In addition, the paper develops an original trading strategy that achieves superior returns to a buy-and-hold strategy. The paper's findings are useful to portfolio managers, practitioners, and policymakers.

Abstract:
IntroductionCorrelation averaging (CAV) is meanwhile an established technique in image processing of two-dimensional crystals /1,2/. The basic idea is to detect the real positions of unit cells in a crystalline array by means of correlation functions and to average them by real space superposition of the aligned motifs. The signal-to-noise ratio improves in proportion to the number of motifs included in the average. Unlike filtering in the Fourier domain, CAV corrects for lateral displacements of the unit cells; thus it avoids the loss of resolution entailed by these distortions in the conventional approach. Here we report on some variants of the method, aimed at retrieving a maximum of information from images with very low signal-to-noise ratios (low dose microscopy of unstained or lightly stained specimens) while keeping the procedure economical.

Abstract:
AIM: To compare visual field defects using the Swedish Interactive Thresholding Algorithm (SITA) Fast strategy with SITA Faster strategy, a newly developed time-saving threshold visual field strategy. METHODS: Ninety-three participants (60 glaucoma patients and 33 normal controls) were enrolled. One eye from each participant was selected randomly for the study. SITA Fast and SITA Faster were performed using the 24-2 default mode for each test. The differences of visual field defects between the two strategies were compared using the test duration, false-positive response errors, mean deviation (MD), visual field index (VFI) and the numbers of depressed test points at the significant levels of P<5%, <2%, <1%, and <0.5% in probability plots. The correlation between strategies was analyzed. The agreement between strategies was acquired by Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS: Mean test durations were 246.0±60.9s for SITA Fast, and 156.3±46.3s for SITA Faster (P<0.001). The test duration of SITA Faster was 36.5% shorter than SITA Fast. The MD, VFI and numbers of depressed points at P<5%, <2%, <1%, and <0.5% in probability plots showed no statistically significant difference between two strategies (P>0.05). Correlation analysis showed a high correlation for MD (r=0.986, P<0.001) and VFI (r=0.986, P<0.001) between the two strategies. Bland-Altman analysis showed great agreement between the two strategies. CONCLUSION: SITA Faster, which saves considerable test time, has a great test quality comparing to SITA Fast, but may be not directly interchangeable.

Abstract:
<p><em>Academic reading comprehension is affected by many factors. This research was focused on understanding academic reading comprehension from the perspectives of interest and metacognitive strategy. This research aimed to find a correlation between students’ interests and metacognitive strategy (before and during reading academic comprehension). The research was conducted at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. There were 27 students who participated in this research. The survey design using a correlational study was applied to analyze the data from the survey-open and close-ended questionnaires. Pearson coefficient correlation was used in exposing the correctional status. The result of the current study showed that there is a positive moderate correlation between students’ interest and metacognitive strategy in reading academic comprehension. Supported by an open-ended data interpretation, this research found that both interest and metacognitive strategy are correlated especially in terms of self-motivation and self-regulation, mood, and strategy employment in reading academic comprehension. This research would have a great theoretical and practical contribution to the English language department, especially for teachers and students in terms of reading academic comprehension. </em></p>

Abstract:
Background: We sought to determine whether the introduction of a new anticoagulation protocol improved the frequency with which target anticoagulation parameters were met in children supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Additionally, we sought to correlate the results of various tests of anticoagulation with the heparin infusion dose (HID) for patients on ECMO and to evaluate the utility of these anticoagulation monitoring tests for the titration of the HID. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 18 patients who received ECMO at an academic tertiary care children’s hospital. Nine patients who were managed using a new anticoagulation protocol were matched by age and diagnosis with 9 patients managed with the old protocol. We collected data relating to patient demographics, type of extracorporeal support, disease process, and incidence of bleeding or thrombosis. Anticoagulation parameters collected include the activated clotting time (ACT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), prothrombin time/international normalized ratio, anti-factor Xa level, and antithrombin 3 level along with the HID at each time point. Patient groups were compared using a Generalized Linear Mixed Model, a mixed model analysis of variance, and correlational studies. Main Results: The percentage of in-range ACT values was not different between the 2 protocols, whereas the percentage of in-range aPTT values was higher in the new anticoagulation protocol (ACT: 37.7% vs 39.5%; aPTT: 25.1% vs 39.8%). After accounting for repeated and variable measures within patients, the probability of obtaining an in-range ACT and aPTT did not differ significantly between the 2 protocols (ACT: P = .3488; aPTT: P = .16). The mean HID did not differ between the 2 groups (35.0 unit/kg/h vs 37.6 unit/kg/h, P = .56). Correlation coefficients demonstrated a significant inverse correlation between the ACT and the HID in both the groups (old: r = −.22, P < .0001; new: r = −.26, P < .0001). We observed a significant positive correlation between the aPTT and the HID in the historical group ( r = .25, P < .0001), but no correlation between the aPTT and the HID in the current group ( r = −.02, P = .71). The anti-factor Xa level showed a significantly positive correlation with the HID in the current group ( r = .62, P < .0001). Conclusions: A multipronged monitoring regimen slightly increased the amount of time that anticoagulation parameters were within range. Correlations between the HID and the aPTT differed based on anticoagulation protocol, with a positive correlation in the older protocol and no correlation in the new protocol. This may highlight a problem in study design and analysis that requires further examination. Further trials are needed to assess the most useful markers with which anticoagulation protocols for ECMO can be created, adjusted, and evaluated.

Abstract:
Multi-label data often involve features with high dimensionality and complicated label correlations, resulting in a great challenge for multi-label learning. Feature selection plays an important role in multi-label learning to address multi-label data. Exploring label correlations is crucial for multi-label feature selection. Previous information-theoretical-based methods employ the strategy of cumulative summation approximation to evaluate candidate features, which merely considers low-order label correlations. In fact, there exist high-order label correlations in label set, labels naturally cluster into several groups, similar labels intend to cluster into the same group, different labels belong to different groups. However, the strategy of cumulative summation approximation tends to select the features related to the groups containing more labels while ignoring the classification information of groups containing less labels. Therefore, many features related to similar labels are selected, which leads to poor classification performance. To this end, Max-Correlation term considering high-order label correlations is proposed. Additionally, we combine the Max-Correlation term with feature redundancy term to ensure that selected features are relevant to different label groups. Finally, a new method named Multi-label Feature Selection considering Max-Correlation (MCMFS) is proposed. Experimental results demonstrate the classification superiority of MCMFS in comparison to eight state-of-the-art multi-label feature selection methods.

The article was to analyse Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Strategy Effective on student’s reading comprehensio, especially in recount text. This research was conducted at tenth grade in second semester at tenth grade SMA 10 Bandar Lampung The design of this research was quantitative research. The subject of this research was 32 students at tenth grade of SMA 10 Bandar Lampung. The result of the research showed that the significant influence was clarified by the assumption of the level of the coefficients correlation between Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Strategy and students’ reading comprehension which was signing positive. Directing to positive correlation means that if the level of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Strategy is high, the level of students’ reading comprehension is also high. In contrast, if the level of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Strategy is low, the level of students’ reading comprehension is also low. Moreover, based on the result of hypothesis testing result (table of correlations) demonstrated that r observed is higher than r table with N = 32, it can be looked at significant either for level 5 % or 1 %. In the table also demonstrated that the level of significant was 1,696 < 10,56 > 2,040. It means that the correlation between Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Strategy and students’ reading comprehension was significant. Abstract:
The asset management sector is constantly looking for a reliable investment strategy, which is able to keep its promises. One of the most used approaches is the target volatility strategy that combines a risky asset with a risk-free trying to maintain the portfolio volatility constant over time. Several analyses highlight that such target is fulfilled on average, but in periods of crisis, the portfolio still suffers market’s turmoils. In this paper, the authors introduce an innovative target volatility strategy: the discontinuous target volatility. Such approach turns out to be more conservative in high volatility periods. Moreover, the authors compare the adoption of the VIX Index as a risk measure instead of the classical standard deviation and show whether the former is better than the latter. In the last section, the authors also extend the analysis to remove the risk-free assumption and to include the correlation structure between two risky assets. Empirical results on a wide time span show the capability of the new proposed strategy to enhance the portfolio performance in terms of standard measures and according to stochastic dominance theory.
