Abstract:
To build on the research of strategic management we conducted an empirical study in the context of international performance. Three principal strategies, according to Porters generic strategy theory: cost leadership cost-focus and differentiation respectively, were tested in our research model. Quantitative empirical analysis of international strategy on a sample of 58 Chinese firms was conducted to determine strategies that lead to enhanced strategic performance. We utilized survey strategy encompassing questionnaire data collection. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS statistical package. Inference statistics consisting of correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed. Findings of the study suggest that cost leadership and differentiation strategies impact strategic performance significantly, whereas cost-focus does not. A value of appropriate international business strategy is illustrated by supporting a relationship between strategy and international performance. The originality of contributions of the study lies in the fact that the generic business strategies’ impact on strategic performance is tested on an international market on the sample of Chinese firms. These notions enrich existing body of knowledge on strategic management. Therefore, companies conducting their business operations internationally should consider forming and implementing strategies of differentiation and cost leadership to achieve optimal business results.

Full text
Abstract:
The correlation of odd electrons in graphene turns out to be significant so that the species should be attributed to correlated ones. This finding profoundly influences the computational strategy addressing it to configuration-interaction computational schemes. Owing to serious problems related to the schemes realization, a compromise can be suggested by using single-determinant approaches based on either Hartree-Fock or Density-Functional Theory in the form of unrestricted open-shell presentation. Both computational schemes enable to fix the electron correlation, while only the Hartree-Fock theory suggests a set of quantities to be calculated that can quantitatively characterize the electron correlation and can be used for a quantitative description of such graphene properties as magnetism, chemical reactivity, and mechanical response. The paper presents concepts and algorithms of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory applied for the consideration of magnetic properties of nanographenes, their chemical modification by the example of stepwise hydrogenation, as well as a possible governing the electron correlation by the carbon skeleton deformation. Abstract:
This paper studies how technical analysis has been used throughout historyand constructs a technical trading strategy to be used in a computer algorithm. The strategy is based on a linear regression indicator and aims to prot fromthe assumption that markets, in this case the DAX, has some degree of serialcorrelation in daily price-movements. The strategy developed in this paper doesbeat a buy and hold with a substantial margin. Further, I test the validity of theseresults by simulating two different sets of random stock-paths using monte-carlosimulations; one following a geometric Brownian motion and the other a wienerprocess with serial correlation. I nd that the strategy based on a linear regressionhas signicantly higher returns than a buy and hold strategy over the same timeperiod and that the results generated by the strategy on the DAX give some degreeof evidence for serial correlation in daily prices on the DAX.

Abstract:
Within the real estate asset class, most companies own and operate properties. How the companies construct their property portfolio, in respect of property type and geographical focus, differ. Some companies have chosen to be focused while the holdings of some companies are well diversified. Depending on which strategy is chosen, the underlying assets of the companies will be different and affected by different factors. This paper investigates if, in Sweden, the composition of the publicly traded real estate companies’ property portfolios affects how their stocks behave on the stock market. Four hypotheses about the behavior is stated, each hypothesis is linked to certain key financial figures that is calculated and analyzed over time. The financial figures that are investigated are the correlation between the companies as well as the correlation with the stock market portfolio, the risk and the risk-adjusted return of the companies. All figures are tested over either a 36 month or a 12 month rolling time period. The results show that the diversified companies display a higher correlation with each other as well as the market since the beginning of the 21st century. Companies that are diversified across property types but focused geographically also display higher correlation. Hence, if a company is focused or diversified geographically doesn’t seem to affect the level of correlation between the companies. Another result is that the smaller, often more focused, companies have a low correlation with each other as well as with the market. However, there are exceptions among the diversified as well as the focused companies. The risk is measured with the help of two variables, the beta coefficient and standard deviation. The results of the rolling beta coefficients show that the companies that are diversified over property type have a higher market risk compared to those that are focused. Whether a company is diversified or focused geographically doesn’t seem to matter. The results of the standard deviation measurements do not show this result as all companies moved in similar fashion. Risk-adjusted return is measured with the help of the Sharpe ratio. The results show that the risk-adjusted return is independent of the composition of the companies’ portfolios. However, in the crisis, the risk-adjusted return of all companies are compressed regardless of how well they performed prior to the crisis.

Crenshaw, Marnita Delrae. "Statistical analysis under the Schruben-Margolin correlation induction strategy in the absence of pure error." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43895.

Full text
Abstract:
To facilitate the design of efficient simulation experiments, Schruben and Margolin (1978) recommend a correlation induction strategy for orthogonally blockable experimental designs. The objective of such experiments is to estimate a general linear regression model on the basis of a quantitative response variable generated by the simulation model. Nozari, Arnold, and Pegden (1987) develop optimal statistical procedures for analyzing simulation experiments performed under the Schruben-Margolin correlation induction strategy. Formulas are given for parameter estimation, hypothesis testing, and confidence interval estimation. The validity of this statistical analysis procedure is contingent upon the presence of a pure error component in the response. The goal of this thesis is to provide an appropriate statistical analysis technique for simulation experiments conducted under the Schruben-Margolin correlation induction strategy in the absence of pure error, and to identify conditions under which the pure error component is absent. Often, in order to construct valid inferences on the responses from a simulation experiment, the technique used to execute the simulation experiment must be properly identified. For purposes of this research, the identification problem takes the form of ensuring that the hypothesized metamodel is appropriate for the number of random number streams used to induce correlations between responses across design points.

Abstract:
Investment in hedge funds is a relatively new phenomenon for investors compared with other forms of savings. In recent years, the interest has increased among investors in investing their money in hedge funds, given the protection against declines in the market they are aiming for. Their main purpose is to generate a high return at a low risk regardless of market trends. This they can achieve by having fewer restrictions that offer more flexible investment strategies and freer investment opportunities. The purpose of this paper is to identify how the selected hedge fund strategies have performed during the recent economic downturn. We also want to clarify the claim that hedge funds exhibit a positive absolute return regardless of what the market is performing. In order to answer the purpose of the essay and its problems, we have used a quantitative method with a deductive approach in the processing of data. Our observations are thus linked to the theory in order to examine the relationships. We have analyzed our results using various financial and statistical measures. A comparison has been made between the different strategies' performance against each other and against a market index during a five year period, which includes the recent financial crisis in 2008. We have also studied the hedge funds in terms of returns, various risk measures, performance measures, correlation and regression. The statistical measurements have been used to comprehensively examine the study's credibility. We came to the conclusion that all hedge funds are not able to generate positive absolute returns, but it is of importance which strategy to investigate. Our examination showed that the market depending hedge funds had a strong correlation with the market. Thus, they failed to perform as well as the other strategies, which had a minor connection to the market during the period of study.

Thorne, Rochelle. "Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) as a language support strategy in a grade 8 natural sciences classroom." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020903.

Full text
Abstract:
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an innovative educational approach in which an additional language is used for the learning and teaching of both language and subject content. Content and Language Integrated Learning is not commonly used in South African classrooms, but its application internationally has been shown by empirical research to significantly improve overall language competence in the target language. Reports indicate increased learner motivation and support for the learning of the content subject. This study sought to consider whether CLIL intervention would improve both language and science skills amongst Grade 8 learners in a Natural Sciences classroom. The researcher used a concurrent embedded mixed method design, including both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to gather data. An experimental test design with English Home Language classes and Afrikaans Home Language classes was employed. Hypothesis Testing was used as a statistical analysis to compare the pre-test and post-test results in order to ascertain the impact of CLIL intervention. In addition, the poster-activity and an open-ended questionnaire was used to qualitatively ascertain the impact of CLIL on learner literacy skills. The results showed that CLIL intervention improved learner performance significantly when compared to learners who were not exposed to CLIL. In addition, CLIL lessons were perceived as effective and learners verified that the approach was beneficial to their learning process.

Abstract:
In this thesis, competitive and cooperative newsboy problems for two substitutable products are analyzed by using game theoretic concepts. The demands of the products are assumed to be dependent and normally distributed. Competition is handled for Nash and Stackelberg games. Nash and Stackelberg games are compared in terms of the order quantities and the expected profits. Cooperative newsboy problem is analyzed for the products having equal costs and revenues. The effect of demand correlation on the order quantities and the expected profits in all of the games is investigated through numerical experiments. Optimal solutions of the Nash, Stackelberg and the cooperative games are examined analytically when the demand correlation is 1.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the methodology of material and technical support of railway transport. According to the types of activities, the nature of the material and technical resources used, technologies, means and management systems, Russian railways belong to the category of high-tech industries that must have high quality and technical level, reliability and technological efficiency in operation. For this reason, the logistics system itself, both in structure and in the algorithm of the functions performed as a whole, needs a serious improvement in the quality of its work. The economic situation in Russia requires a revision of the principles and mechanisms of management based on the corporate model of supply chain management, focused on logistics knowledge. In the difficult economic conditions of the current decade, it is necessary to improve the quality of the supply organization of enterprises and structural divisions of railway transport, directly related to the implementation of the process approach, the advantage of which is a more detailed regulation of management actions and their mutual coordination. In order to increase the efficiency of its activities and develop the management system, Russian Railways is developing a lean production system aimed at further expanding the implementation of the principles of customer orientation, ideology and corporate culture. At the present time, the solution of many issues is impossible without a cybernetic approach to the formulation of problems of material and technical support and logistics analysis of information technologies, to the implementation of the developed algorithms and models of development strategies and concepts for improving the business processes of the production system. The management strategy, or the general plan for the implementation of activities for the management of material resources, is based on a fundamental assessment of the alignment and correlation of forces and factors operating in the economic and political field, taking into account the impact on the specific form of the management strategy. The materials will be useful to the heads and specialists of the directorates of the MTO, CDZs and can be used in the scientific research of bachelors, masters and postgraduates interested in the economics of railway transport and supply logistics.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses three directional hedge fund strategies: long/short equity, short only, and equity market neutral. These strategies rely on different types of positions that are enumerated and explained using trade examples. A key feature of funds implementing directional strategies is the market exposure best described by gross exposure and beta-adjusted net exposure. In long/short equity funds, money managers often use yield enhancement strategies based on option overlays. A review of different management styles explicates the heterogeneity of hedge funds and liquid alternatives that implement the long/short equity strategy. Analysis of portfolio diversification highlights why equity market-neutral funds have more holdings than long/short equity funds. For equity market-neutral funds, the chapter highlights a link between the fund’s correlation with the market and its beta: low beta does not imply that it has a low correlation with the market. The chapter provides a theoretical discussion with some real fund examples.

Ivanova, Iryna, and Elena Afanasieva. MODEL OF INTERACTION BETWEEN ADVERTISING, PR AND JOURNALISM. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11060.

Full text
Abstract:
The article is an overview of the journalism – PR – advertising relationship at the terminological, empirical-analytical and practical levels. It traces the state of the discussion of these correlations in the post-soviet media such as Ukraine. The study describes that domesticating the importance of the appropriate partnership between the three communication technologies. The thesis is that journalism, advertising and PR create a mutual connection that takes place in an atmosphere of PR and advertising permissiveness and deepens with the development of digitalization, Social network development. The present research is based on a comprehensive approach. The inductive and deductive methods are adopted to discuss theoretical materials, and the interdisciplinary research method is used to detect PR-specific features as a philosophy of a new journalism project. The interpretive approach, usually employed to analyze media text as a complex synthetic structure, was also taken into consideration. The analytical method application identified the modern means of substantiating the ideological, esthetical and informative value of brand journalism and spin doctor. The innovative character of modern media as a behavioral strategy in the advertising and PR industry consists in the fact that it is a form of creative production and behavior rather than adapting a specific communication situation. The article examines the main directions of contemporary interactions between PR, advertising and journalism as a media content creation. In this context, it is asserted that advertising, journalism and PR activities can contribute to the creation of media content. At some point, good media content is achieved not only as a result of this competition but also from the correlation between PR, advertising and journalism.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: At present, many studies on the association between CCL5、CCL11、CCL17 polymorphisms and atopic dermatitis(AD)are inconsistent. We conducted this meta-analysis of Case control trial to evaluate the association between CCL5、CCL11、CCL17 polymorphisms and atopic dermatitis(AD). Condition being studied: Since the discovery of cytokines, and in particular the role of chemokines in the progression of AD, many clinical studies have been carried out around the world to explore the association of AD with chemokine polymorphism. However, the quality, type and conclusions of studies on the correlation between chemokine polymorphism and AD are inconsistent. Foreign studies have shown that chemokine polymorphism is statistically significant in relation to AD. Studies by Menzies-Gow A et al have shown that a new therapeutic strategy targeting to block CCL11 signal has been proven to significantly improve patients with moderate to severe AD. However, some foreign studies have also reported that chemokine polymorphism is unrelated to AD.

Abstract:
Distance education has become the mandatory component of higher education establishments all over the world including Ukraine regarding COVID-19 lockdown and intentions of Universities to render valuable knowledge and provide safe educational experience for students. The present study aimed to explore the student’s and academic staff’s attitude towards e-learning and the most complicated challenges regarding online learning and distance education. Our findings disclosed that the online learning using Zoom, Moodle, Google Meet, BigBlueButton and Cisco has become quite popular among the students and academic staff in Ukraine in time of the lockdown period and beyond. Based on the Principal Component Analysis data processing we can conclude that students’ satisfaction and positive e-learning perception are in a good correlation with quality of e-learning resources and set of apps which are used while e-learning and distance education. Also, education style, methods, and manner predict willingness of students to self-study. The self-motivation, time-management, lack of practice, digital alienation, positive attitude towards ICT, and instruction strategy belong to the most important challenges of COVID-19 lockdown based on the students and academic staff interviews. Online learning on daily purpose should be used in the favor of strengthening of classical higher education rather than replacing the former. Blended education is the best alternative to face-to-face education, because the communication with mentor in a live environmental even virtual should have ushered the learners to complete online learning and improve its results.

Gottlieb, Yuval, Bradley Mullens, and Richard Stouthamer. investigation of the role of bacterial symbionts in regulating the biology and vector competence of Culicoides vectors of animal viruses. United States Department of Agriculture, June 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2015.7699865.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Symbiotic bacteria have been shown to influence host reproduction and defense against biotic and abiotic stressors, and this relates to possible development of a symbiont-based control strategy. This project was based on the hypothesis that symbionts have a significant impact on Culicoides fitness and vector competence for animal viruses. The original objectives in our proposal were: 1. Molecular identification and localization of the newly-discovered symbiotic bacteria within C. imicola and C. schultzei in Israel and C. sonorensis in California. 2. Determination of the prevalence of symbiotic bacteria within different vector Culicoides populations. 3. Documentation of specific symbiont effects on vector reproduction and defense: 3a) test for cytoplasmic incompatibility in Cardinium-infected species; 3b) experimentally evaluate the role of the symbiont on infection or parasitism by key Culicoides natural enemies (iridescent virus and mermithid nematode). 4. Testing the role(s) of the symbionts in possible protection against infection of vector Culicoides by BTV. According to preliminary findings and difficulties in performing experimental procedures performed in other insect symbiosis systems where insect host cultures are easily maintained, we modified the last two objectives as follows: Obj. 3, we tested how symbionts affected general fitness of Israeli Culicoides species, and thoroughly described and evaluated the correlation between American Culicoides and their bacterial communities in the field. We also tried alternative methods to test symbiont-Culicoides interactions and launched studies to characterize low-temperature stress tolerances of the main US vector, which may be related to symbionts. Obj. 4, we tested the correlation between EHDV (instead of BTV) aquisition and Cardinium infection. Culicoides-bornearboviral diseases are emerging or re-emerging worldwide, causing direct and indirect economic losses as well as reduction in animal welfare. One novel strategy to reduce insects’ vectorial capacity is by manipulating specific symbionts to affect vector fitness or performance of the disease agent within. Little was known on the bacterial tenants occupying various Culicoides species, and thus, this project was initiated with the above aims. During this project, we were able to describe the symbiont Cardinium and whole bacterial communities in Israeli and American Culicoides species respectively. We showed that Cardinium infection prevalence is determined by land surface temperature, and this may be important to the larval stage. We also showed no patent significant effect of Cardinium on adult fitness parameters. We showed that the bacterial community in C. sonorensis varies significantly with the host’s developmental stage, but it varies little across multiple wastewater pond environments. This may indicate some specific biological interactions and allowed us to describe a “core microbiome” for C. sonorensis. The final set of analyses that include habitat sample is currently done, in order to separate the more intimately-associated bacteria from those inhabiting the gut contents or cuticle surface (which also could be important). We were also able to carefully study other biological aspects of Culicoides and were able to discriminate two species in C. schultzei group in Israel, and to investigate low temperature tolerances of C. sonorensis that may be related to symbionts. Scientific implications include the establishment of bacterial identification and interactions in Culicoides (our work is cited in other bacteria-Culicoides studies), the development molecular identification of C. schultzei group, and the detailed description of the microbiome of the immature and matched adult stages of C. sonorensis. Agricultural implications include understanding of intrinsic factors that govern Culicoides biology and population regulation, which may be relevant for vector control or reduction in pathogen transmission. Being able to precisely identify Culicoides species is central to understanding Culicoides borne disease epidemiology.

Diop, Ahmed. Country Diagnostic Study – Senegal. Islamic Development Bank Institute, October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.55780/rp21003.

Full text
Abstract:
The Country Diagnostic Study (CDS) for Senegal uses the Hausmann-Rodrik-Velasco growth diagnostics model to identify the binding constraints being faced in its quest for higher and more sustained economic growth and make recommendations to relax these constraints. Hence, the findings of the CDS can help the Islamic Development Bank in identifying areas where it can have a greater impact and provide an evidence-basis to support the development of the Member Country Partnership Strategy. After decades of subdued and highly volatile economic growth due to heavy dependence on primary commodities and low productivity, Senegal experienced an unprecedented growth acceleration from 2014 to 2019. However, there appeared to be a weak correlation between economic growth and jobs creation. In addition, about 90 percent of non-agricultural employment is estimated to be informal. The national poverty rate decreased by 5 percentage points between 2011 and 2018. Nonetheless, the absolute number of poor people has increased. Furthermore, regional disparities are persistent. Despite the country’s solid performance in the field of governance, further simplification and transparency of business procedures and regulations will be critical in addressing the challenge of informality. Efforts to address informality in the economy should also target the issue of access to finance through the design of financing mechanisms based on specific needs assessment and risk management tools. Senegal will also need to create the conditions for higher competitiveness and follow upgrading trajectories in global and regional value chains. In this respect, both physical and digital connectivity will be essential.
