Abstract:
This study examines the influence of project managers’ communication behaviors in integrated project delivery (IPD) projects. This study also considers the impact of team-level information sharing on team-level outcomes (i.e., goal alignment, decision quality, process commitment, and project quality). Results indicate that team information sharing was perceived as beneficial, but the effects of project manager communication behaviors were inconsistent. Interaction analyses indicated that project managers’ communication behaviors hindered team functioning if teams were already engaging in adequate levels of information sharing. This manuscript contributes to the project management corpus by explicating an integrative model whereby project manager and team-level information-sharing behaviors are modeled simultaneously.

Abstract:
Abstract Manually annotated data is key to developing text-mining and information-extraction algorithms. However, human annotation requires considerable time, effort and expertise. Given the rapid growth of biomedical literature, it is paramount to build tools that facilitate speed and maintain expert quality. While existing text annotation tools may provide user-friendly interfaces to domain experts, limited support is available for figure display, project management, and multi-user team annotation. In response, we developed TeamTat (https://www.teamtat.org), a web-based annotation tool (local setup available), equipped to manage team annotation projects engagingly and efficiently. TeamTat is a novel tool for managing multi-user, multi-label document annotation, reflecting the entire production life cycle. Project managers can specify annotation schema for entities and relations and select annotator(s) and distribute documents anonymously to prevent bias. Document input format can be plain text, PDF or BioC (uploaded locally or automatically retrieved from PubMed/PMC), and output format is BioC with inline annotations. TeamTat displays figures from the full text for the annotator's convenience. Multiple users can work on the same document independently in their workspaces, and the team manager can track task completion. TeamTat provides corpus quality assessment via inter-annotator agreement statistics, and a user-friendly interface convenient for annotation review and inter-annotator disagreement resolution to improve corpus quality.

Abstract:
<p>This article considers the appointment of a foreign manager to coach a national football team from the perspective of discursive identity construction. The data is comprised of three corpora of online versions of newspaper articles, each corresponding to a phase in Fabio Capello’s first two years of tenure. Reflecting current trends in Critical Discourse Analysis, qualitative close analysis is carried out on two articles from each corpus while quantitative analysis is extended across each corpus to identify salient and consistent aspects of discursive identity construction. Exploiting the multi-disciplinary basis of CDA, the data is examined in terms of transitivity, lexis (comprising vocabulary, collocation, deixis, and intertextuality), and narrative identity construction. Micro-analysis of grammatical and linguistic patterns is applied to indicate patterns in press coverage in each phase, and a corresponding overview considers how aspects of identity work diffused through each corpus cohere into general storylines.</p>

Abstract:
The Liverpool football manager, Brendan Rodgers, was clearly upset. He had just seen the title chances of his vibrant attacking team, scorers of more league goals than any other team in England, suffer a major setback, with defeat against Chelsea: ‘They parked two buses, rather than one’, he lamented of the Chelsea tactics in a post-match interview: ‘from the first minute, they had 10 men behind the ball. We were the team trying to win, but we just couldn't make the breakthrough’ (Bevan, 2014). A few days later, after Chelsea had lost to Atlético Madrid in the second leg of a European Champions League semi-final, after playing very defensively in the first leg, this defeat was celebrated by vengeful rival fans on twitter, drawing on the same ‘park the bus’ metaphor, e.g. ‘when you park the bus, make sure it's not near any red lines’ (the humour of which derives from Atlético playing in red and white stripes, while yellow lines in the UK forbid parking, so the bus is penalized for being in the wrong place) or ‘Atlético parked 4 Ferraris and 2 Veyrons. TOO DAMN FAST. Chelsea bus cannot catch up with the speed bro!’, where the Chelsea bus is ridiculed for simply being too slow (Footballburp, 2014).

Abstract:

Abstract This paper reflects Gulick’s notes on the theory of organization in the context of Public Sector Manager’s work milieu in Tanzania. Using the Performance Improvement Model (PIM) as the proxy the paper instantiates the POSDCORB by drawing the parallels between the POSDCORB mnemonic and PIM and therefore corroborates Gulick’s summation. We argue that in order to apply the classic theory of organization in today’s public administration an attempt should be made to view organization theory from a design perspective. The paper recommends that more research should be done to instantiate POSDCORB and contributes to the corpus knowledge of public administration discipline.

Abstract:
The research is made in the frame of methodology of emotional text analysis – the computer technology allowing to classify texts according to the criterion of the emotion expressed in them. The paper focuses on specificity of verbal means used in texts of eight emotional classes to deal with the category of time. The data we used consist in 3900 Internet-texts from social network VKontakte assessed by 2000 informants on a crowdsource platform. We processed the raw data using the elements of mathematical modelling, and, a set of tools offered by Sketch Engine corpus manager platform. The hypothesis is that while experiencing an emotion, an individual feels the time differently and, consequently, speaks about it not in the same way. We paid a particular attention to the weight of the lexemes those semantics is connected with the idea of time in different emotional text classes.

Abstract:
In the article the authors examine intersystem relations and problems of deliberate evasion of the repayment of debts of a large size, or from the payment for securities, after the entry into legal force of an appropriate court judgment. The author pay attention to the construction of the crime, actus reusand its characteristics and to the main categories: accounts payable, organization, organization's manager and malignance. The analysis of judicial practice and the theory is carried out too. The phrase ‘accounts payable’ has some blurry boundaries, and as a result, it causes considerable difficulties in the qualification of the act. It is concluded that that the criminological characteristics of accounts payable are much narrower in comparison with the generally accepted in the civil doctrine interpretation of an obligation. A similar situation is with the treatment of the notion ‘organization's manager’. The specific of the legal status of the manager is in the civil and employment law relationships, that indicates its complex nature. In this regard, at least two elements of the corpus delictiprovided by Article 177 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation relating to the object and to the subject of the crime contain private-law characteristics. These characteristics have legal content and meanings which remain controversial, for theoretical and practical reasons. The civilized category ‘conscientiousness’ is the cornerstone of the concept ‘malignance’ in the civil law. The category ‘conscientiousness’ or ‘good conscience’ (‘bona fides’) is, in turn, of an evaluative nature and has the highest form of abstraction. In the opinion of the authors, the ‘ratio legis’ of the criminal structure of Article 177 of the Criminal Code, hidden behind evaluative categories, should be reflected in the real possibility to enforce the judicial act. The disposition of the norm implies that the implementation of final rulings should be taken into account. Therefore, malignance in the behavior of the debtor cannot be judged without taking into account the entire procedure to be followed in enforcement proceedings.

This Master’s Thesis is devoted to the consideration of corpus linguistics capabilities, investigation of the main problems encountered by technical translators while translating engineering texts and provision of an alternative solution for them to eliminate translation weaknesses, improve quality, and optimize translation itself. The paper defines features of a good quality translation and its requirements. In addition, the ways to overcome various translation difficulties at syntactic, semantic and structural levels are given in the form of recommended translation techniques which are classified according to specified criteria. The given research paper also provides a practical example of technical translation, the analysis of which gives wide opportunities for studying a corpus as an alternative solution for improving the quality of the translation. The thesis presents types and criteria for a good corpus compilation. Practical usage of a corpus with examples is suggested to outline its main functions and opportunities which can assist any translator in achieving the closest equivalency and adequate translation. The following paper shares experience of developing the Nuclear Corpus and its successful implementation while using the most user-friendly corpus managers. The paper also demonstrates the advantages of corpus application during translation compared to other modern technologies used in the process of translation. This research encourages the idea of further corpus development for the specific translation needs in order to make target texts equivalent at the highest level and meet expectations of the addressees. At the same time, the Master’s Thesis makes it possible to study the issue of a corpus further with the purpose to identify new useful opportunities it can provide to facilitate the work of a translator.

Roth, Joseph L. "A Model for Using Managed Services in Designing and Supporting a Wireless Local Area Network for the Navy Marine Corps Intranet." NSUWorks, 2009. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/293.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose and content of this work are to explore the proper strategy on how to deploy multi-service mobile net centric warfare, or FORCEnet, the Navy's concept for Net Centric Warfare. In this research, the author examined where the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) fits into this vision and how it is mobile and multi-service compatible. It also explored how low-cost commercial approaches such as IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network technologies can be implemented as a joint notion of Net Centric Warfare in terms of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). The problem investigated in this study was to evaluate what cost savings and/or efficiencies were achieved by organizing and transitioning from a traditional network operation center to a managed services operation in the development of a wireless local area network (LAN) in a military setting. The military needs a road map on how to deploy wireless networks in a secure, supportable, and usable fashion that is in concert with the core mission of the military business requirements, i.e., a service oriented architecture. The research took place at several naval bases in San Diego. The methodology included the "case study," as described by Robert Yin (2003), and the systems development life cycle (SDLC). The expectation of the researcher in this study is the development of a managed services operation in the creation of a wireless LAN on a military base.

Martin, René Adrienne. "Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) growth and reproductive responses to disturbance in a managed boreal forest." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/11718.

Full text
Abstract:
I compared the short-term effects (i. e., within one year of forest harvesting) of two methods of partial cut harvesting (strip-cutting with 75% forest retention by area, and strip-cutting and thinning with 50% forest retention by area) on the growth and reproduction of bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) located in the boreal coniferous forest of northern Alberta, Canada. Bunchberry growth and reproductive responses were measured in harvested stands and along the edge of adjacent, non-harvested stands, and compared to the interior of adjacent, non-harvested stands. One character of bunchberry growth (total ramets/m2) and six reproductive characters (proportion of ramets that flowered, number of flowers/flowering ramet, pollen deposition, initiated fruit, set fruit, and fruit weight) were measured. Light levels and percent soil moisture per plot were also measured, and general habitat characteristics (i.e., tree characteristics and ground cover of other vegetation) were described. Bunchberry was affected by harvesting overall (i.e., with all variables combined); however, bunchberry growth, number of flowers, pollen deposition, and initiated fruits did not significantly differ between any locations for either retention level. The proportion of ramets that flowered significantly increased in the harvested stands with 75% forest retention, and significantly decreased in the harvested stands with 50% forest retention. Fruit set was higher in the harvested stands for both retention levels; however, this was only statistically significant for the 75% retention level. Fruit weight was also higher in the harvested stands for both retention levels, but was only statistically significantly in the 50% retention stands. Light levels and percent soil moisture were significantly higher in the harvested plot locations for both the 50% and 75% retention levels; however, no differences were found in light and soil moisture levels between retention levels. Bunchberry responded to harvesting by producing large and numerous fruits in both retention treatments, a response that is likely related to increased light levels and soil moisture found in these locations. Initial reproductive responses (i.e., the proportion of ramets that flowered) differed between retention levels, however. The increases seen in flowering ramets in 75% retention stands were likely a result of increased light levels, allowing for more resources to be allocated to reproduction. However, in the 50% retention stands, mechanical damage due to this more intensive harvesting technique may have resulted in the decreases seen in flowering ramets.

The approach embeds text mining techniques to transform news data into numerical data, which entails the querying and selection of relevant news articles and the construction of frequency- and sentiment-based indicators. Word embeddings are used to achieve maximally informative news selection and scoring. We apply the methodology from the viewpoint of a sustainable asset manager wanting to actively follow news covering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects. In an empirical analysis, using a Dutch-written news corpus, we create news-based ESG signals for a large list of companies and compare these to scores from an external data provider. We find preliminary evidence of abnormal news dynamics leading up to downward score adjustments and of efficient portfolio screening.

Abstract:
The importance of the Word of Mouth is growing day by day in many topics. This phenomenon is evident in everyday life, e.g., the rise of influencers and social media managers. If more people positively debate specific products, then even more people are encouraged to buy them and vice versa. This effect is directly affected by the relationship between the potential customer and the reviewer. Moreover, considering the negative reporting bias is evident in how the Word of Mouth analysis is of absolute interest in many fields. We propose an algorithm to extract the sentiment from a natural language text corpus. The combined approach of Neural Networks, with high predictive power but more challenging interpretation, with more simple but informative models, allows us to quantify a sentiment with a numeric value and to predict if a sentence has a positive (negative) sentiment. The assessment of an objective quantity improves the interpretation of the results in many fields. For example, it is possible to identify crucial specific sectors that require intervention, improving the company's services whilst finding the strengths of the company himself (useful for advertising campaigns). Moreover, considering that the time information is usually available in textual data with a web origin, to analyze trends on macro/micro topics. After showing how to properly reduce the dimensionality of the textual data with a data-cleaning phase, we show how to combine: WordEmbedding, K-Means clustering, SentiWordNet, and the Threshold-based Naïve Bayes classifier. We apply this method to Booking.com and TripAdvisor.com data, analyzing the sentiment of people who discuss a particular issue, providing an example of customer satisfaction.

Abstract:
Nowadays, there are many options for corpus linguistic analysis that make use of different approaches for corpus storage. There are tools based on SQL databases, dedicated implementations such as CQP/CWB and others that employ plain-text corpora. NoSQL databases have been widely used for big data, data mining and even sentiment analysis. However, as far as we can see, there is a lack of a widespread concordancer or consolidated framework that makes use of MongoDB architecture for the purposes of corpus linguistics. This paper aims to describe the architecture of a software that allows users to analyse monolingual and bilingual parallel corpora with grammatical annotation using MongoDB technology. Our premises are that MongoDB is ideal for non-structured data and provides high flexibility and scalability, so it may be also useful for corpus linguistic research. We analyse functionalities of MongoDB such as text search indexes and query format in order to examine its suitability.

Managers are increasingly facing the question of how to convey electronic information to e-commerce users in a manner that enables those individuals to resolve information search related problems more easily. Information service quality and the associated performance is challenging to manage in Web-based interactions because such settings involve several features (i.e., less tangible contact, more uncertainty, differing feedback loops between business and consumer) not found in more traditional exchanges. In an attempt to capture a broader view of the quality of information service offerings in ecommerce settings, the model compares the DeLone and McLean’s framework (2003) that includes use as an outcome measure with a model suggested by Landrum and Prybutok (2004) that features usefulness as its outcome measure. Abstract:
This research proposes a novel method of measuring the dynamics of semantic relatedness. Research on semantic relatedness has a long history in the fields of computational linguistics, psychology, computer science, as well as information systems. Computing semantic relatedness has played a critical role in various situations, such as data integration and keyword recommendation. Many researchers have tried to propose more sophisticated techniques to measure semantic relatedness. However, little research has considered the change of semantic relatedness with the flow of time and occurrence of events. The authors' proposed method is validated by actual corpus data collected from a particular context over a specific period of time. They test the feasibility of our proposed method by constructing semantic networks by using the corpus collected during a different period of time. The experiment results show that our method can detect and manage the changes in semantic relatedness between concepts. Based on the results, the authors discuss the need for a dynamic semantic relatedness paradigm.

This chapter provides analysis of the First Petersburg Offensive and describes subsequent military events around Petersburg, including the Union infantry initiative styled the Second Petersburg Offensive, conducted June 20-24. This operation sought to move west and encircle Petersburg, in the process controlling two of the key railroads upon which the Confederates depended for supplies. The Second and Sixth Corps of the Army of the Potomac bore responsibility for the mission. The Second Corps met with defeat on June 22 and Confederate attacks compelled the Sixth Corps to fall back on June 23. These actions are sometimes called the Battle of Jerusalem Plank Road. The Unionists did manage to establish a bridgehead on the north side of the James at Deep Bottom in a separate operation. Abraham Lincoln made his first visit to the Petersburg front during this period.

Abstract:
Transition from single core to multicore technology has brought daunting challenge for thermal management of microprocessor chips. The issue of power dissipation in next generation chip will be far more critical as further transition from multicore to many-core processors is soon to be expected. It is very important to obtain uniform on-chip thermal profile with low peak temperature for improved performance and reliability of many-core processors. In this paper, a proactive thermal management technique called ‘power multiplexing’ is explored for many-core processors. Power multiplexing involves redistribution of locations of power dissipating cores at regular time intervals to obtain uniform thermal profile with low peak temperature. Three different migration policies namely random, cyclic and global coolest replace have been employed for power multiplexing and their efficacy in reducing the peak temperature and thermal gradient on chip is investigated. A comparative study of these policies has been performed enlisting their limits and advantages from the thermal and implementation perspective considering important relevant parameters such as migration frequency. For a given migration frequency, global coolest replace policy is found to be the most effective among the three policies considered as this policy leads to 10 °C reduction in peak temperature and 20 °C reduction in maximum spatial temperature difference on a 256 core chip. Proximity of active cores or power configuration on chip is characterized by a parameter ‘proximity index’ which emerges as an important parameter to represent the spatial power distribution on a chip. Global coolest replace policy optimizes the power map on chip taking care of not only the proximity of active cores but also the finite-size effect of chip and the 3D system of electronic package leading to almost uniform thermal profile on chip with lower average temperature.

In this paper, we present a shared task on core information extraction problems, named entity recognition and relation extraction. In contrast to popular shared tasks on related problems, we try to move away from strictly academic rigor and rather model a business case. As a source for textual data we choose the corpus of Russian strategic documents, which we annotated according to our own annotation scheme. To speed up the annotation process, we exploit various active learning techniques. In total we ended up with more than two hundred annotated documents. Thus we managed to create a high-quality data set in short time. The shared task consisted of three tracks, devoted to 1) named entity recognition, 2) relation extraction and 3) joint named entity recognition and relation extraction. We provided with the annotated texts as well as a set of unannotated texts, which could of been used in any way to improve solutions. In the paper we overview and compare solutions, submitted by the shared task participants. Abstract:
Annual subscription reviews are a normal part of many libraries’ operations, but this process is time consuming and can be particularly challenging for institutions with small e-resources staffs. The approach pursued by the Michael Schwartz Library at Cleveland State University includes strategies other libraries may find helpful in moving beyond cost per use in their reviews. In early fiscal year 2019, the Michael Schwartz Library identified a need to systematically review all subscriptions annually. The library operates with a flat budget and cancellations are often required to manage inflation. Previously, subscription reviews were in response to immediate needs (e.g. budget cuts, changes in consortium offerings, etc.). Largely due to staffing and time constraints, examining the entire corpus of subscriptions was outside of the scope of past reviews. A new subscription review process was developed to prepare the library to make data-driven decisions regarding cancellations for the next fiscal year. The methodology developed for the new subscription review consisted of three phases with each phase narrowing the number of resources considered for cancellation. The first phase was an evaluation of resource performance from an acquisitions perspective and incorporated cost per use and annual price increases. In the next phase, subject librarians evaluated resources in their respective disciplines based on several criteria and were required to rank resources in order of retention priority. In the final phase, faculty were surveyed on content quality, frequency of use in instruction, and other criteria for those resources deemed “cancellation eligible.”

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to describe a series of laboratory work results in conjunction with successful implementation of the surfactant (micellar) continuous injection in the Muara Enim sand of the Arahan-Banjarsari Field, South Sumatra. A series of lab tests were conducted using field cores and fluids taken from the Arahan-Banjarsari (AR-BS) field. The tests included phase behavior, mixture viscosity measurement, spontaneous imbibition, and static isotherm adsorption tests. Several surfactant formulas had been tested to find the most consistent and most suitable to the reservoir conditions. The surfactant injection was started in March 2009 into three AR wells. The injection was divided into 4 stages with initial concentration of 0.45% and the final concentration of 0.1%. Total volume of micellar solution injected in 110 days was 52,365 bbls. An increase in oil production was observed not only in two AR wells but also in 8 wells in the neighboring BS field (500 meters distance) after 140 days since injection of micellar solution started with injection rates of 200-250 bpd. Two BS wells were reopened and produced 28% and 54% water cut (the water cut before the two wells were shut in was 19% and 76%). This micellar solution injection managed to decrease the decline rate of 70% to 26% per year, increase production rate from AR and BS fields from 90 bopd to a peak of 220 bopd in 5 months since injection started, and reserves enhancement of 183 M bbls (10% OOIP) during 3.5 years of continuous injection. The low cost, full scale chemical EOR leads to changes in the common understanding about micellar flooding and shows a high impact on oil recovery of 183 Mbls (AB-5c sand with OOIP of 1.8 MMSTB).

Full text
Abstract:
A large number of nuclear reactors with graphite as moderator and reflector material are facing to be decommissioned now or later, and the radioactive graphite waste is a large part of the involved wastes. In addition, high temperature gas-cooled reactors being developed rapidly use a large quantity of graphite material (up to 95%) in the nuclear fuel elements, besides graphite material as their moderator and reflector material in the reactor cores. Therefore, it is very critical to manage these graphite wastes from the decommissioned and being decommissioned reactors. The part with low-level radioactive contamination that could not be reused now, may be disposed of as solid waste to reduce its volume, and the possibility of its being retrieved and reused in the future with advanced technology should be considered. The other graphite waste with high-level radioactive contamination requires much more consideration. Due to several factors, such as its large quantity, a lack of available disposal sites and public acceptance, it may not be disposed of directly in the repository any more. An option may be the transformation of the high-level radioactive graphite waste into low-level radioactive waste through physical and chemical processes. The current technologies involve, e.g., thermal treatment to release 36Cl, capture of the 14C from the gases of incineration of carbon material and decomposition of carbon dioxide into solid carbon. After these treatments the carbon material might be decontaminated and separated as low-level radioactive waste and a small amount of residual high-level waste could be disposed of ultimately. In order to achieve a sustainable development of graphite material, the maximum utility and the minimal disposal of radioactive graphite should be considered in the management of radioactive graphite waste. It is urgent to explore new technologies for decontaminating and recycling radioactive graphite.

"Dynamics of Wettability Alteration from Alkali/Nanoparticles/Polymer Flooding - Integrating Data of Imbibition, Contact Angle and Interfacial-Tension to Screen Injection Agents." In SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/206242-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Even though the influence of wettability alteration on imbibition is well-documented, its synergy with Interfacial-Tension (IFT) for Alkali/Nanoparticles/Polymer flooding requires additional investigation. Particularly, when the oil Total Acid Number (TAN) may determine the wetting-state of the reservoir and influences IFT. Therefore, a laboratory evaluation workflow is presented that combines complementary assessments such as spontaneous imbibition tests, IFT and contact angles measurements. This workflow aims at evaluating wettability alteration and IFT changes when injecting Alkali, Nanoparticles and Polymers or a combination of them. Dynamics and mechanism of imbibition was tracked by analyzing the recovery change with the inverse Bond number. Three sandstone types (outcrops) were used that mainly differ in clay content and permeability. Oils with low and high-TAN were used, the latter from the potential field pilot 16TH reservoir in the Matzen field (Austria). We have identified the conditions leading to an increase of recovery rates as well as ultimate recovery by imbibition of Alkali/Nanoparticles/Polymer aqueous phases. Data obtained demonstrate how oil TAN number (low and high), chemical agent and reservoir mineralogy influence fluid-fluid and rock-fluid interactions. Application of alkali with high-TAN oil resulted in a low-equilibrium IFT. Alkali-alone fall short to mobilize trapped low-TAN oil. Alkali-polymer is efficient in wettability alteration of oil-wet core plugs towards water-wet state for high-TAN oil. The investigated nanofluids manage to restore a water-wet state in cores with high clay content along with improving gravity driven flow. IFT reduction between oil and surface-modified nanoparticles is unaffected by the acidity of the oil. Furthermore, contact angle in high-TAN oil remained similar even after 1000 min of observation for 2.5% clay cores in synthetic brine, but increases significantly when in contact with alkali/polymer. Comparing porosity and permeability before and after imbibition, a slight reduction was observed after imbibition with brine and nanofluids. We preliminary conclude that permeability reduction is not associated to the tested nanoparticles present in solution. We observed evidence of change in the imbibition mechanism from counter-current (capillary driven/high inverse Bond number) to co-current (gravity driven/low inverse Bond number) for nanoparticles/alkali. The calculated inverse Bond number correlates with the ultimate recovery, larger inverse Bond number leading to lower ultimate recovery. This work presents novel data on the synergy of IFT, contact angles and Amott imbibition for the chemical processes studied. We leverage from complementary laboratory techniques to define a comprehensive workflow that allows understanding wettability-alteration when injecting Alkali, Nanoparticles and Polymers or a combination of them. Obtained results show that the workflow can be used as an efficient screening tool to determine the effectiveness of various substances to increase oil recovery rate and ultimate recovery.

Abstract:
The electricity production systems, especially those based on nuclear fission, are increasingly facing more tight constraints and are subjected to more deep analyses based on the three aspects of economical sustainability, environmental sustainability and social sustainability. Nuclear Reactors future development has been outlined in the framework of the GIF (Generation IV International Forum), where the Lead Fast Reactor (LFR) is placed among the most promising innovative solutions. Many aspects of LFR offer a huge improvement from different points of view. The non pressurization of the system and the absence of sources of hazardous chemical potential energy enhances consistently its safety aspects, improving the perception of inherent safety of the Generation IV (G4) reactors in the public opinion. At the moment, due to the abundance of the new fossil resources, the competitiveness of Nuclear Power Plants is severely challenged, this aspect representing the most difficult to manage, besides the public acceptability. Moreover, for G4 reactors, an additional “cost premium” associated with the innovative technological concept has to be taken into account. Conversely, looking at the mid-term future, the real economical comparison has to be performed considering as competing sources, according to the IPCC recommendations and constraints enacted by the European Community, only CO2 free sources. In this context, economical competitiveness could be regained depending on the “cost premium” to be added to fossil fuels to become CO2 free, through the improvement of the carbon separation and storage techniques. The intrinsic lead properties (e.g.: low absorption cross section) permit to easily design LFR flexible cores, optimized with respect to a number of possible goals, as a long-lived core with minimal reactivity swing intended for battery concepts, or what is called an “adiabatic” core, where the entire Pu and MA inventory in the spent fuel can be indefinitely reused in a closed fuel cycle. The latter option allows to limit the waste throughput to the fission products only (along with the — unavoidable — losses from fuel reprocessing), and to benefit of natural resources minimization. These are both specific Generation IV goals envisioned to reach nuclear energy sustainability. An overall fuel cycle balance in a scenario with a step by step introduction of LFR reactors fleet grown in a specific geographical area, is in details analyzed in [1] and presented in this conference.

Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers operates, maintains, and manages more than $232 billion worth of the Nation’s water resource infrastructure and relies on the Operational Condition Assessment (OCA) process to determine the condition of the assets and their components. The sheer number of components, all of equal OCA scheduling priority, creates challenges in ensuring that assessments are conducted in a timely manner and that data generated are of sufficient quality to inform resource allocation decisions. This research applied methods from systems design to determine the OCA system “as-is” state and create a stakeholder-informed vision of a “to-be” state that addresses current system challenges. To meet its objective of providing current assessments of asset condition, the OCA system must provide four high-level functions: provide access to asset data, conduct assessments, determine asset risk, and prioritize and schedule assessments. The development of capabilities to provide these functions will facilitate the achievement of the OCA system to-be vision: a consistent view of asset condition and risk across the enterprise.

Abstract:
This Dredging Operations Environmental Research (DOER) technical note disseminates novel methods to monitor and reduce contaminant mobility and bioavailability in water, sediments, and soils. These method advancements are enabled by additive manufacturing (i.e., three-dimensional [3D] printing) to deploy and retrieve materials that adsorb contaminants that are traditionally applied as unbound powders. Examples of sorbents added as amendments for remediation of contaminated sediments include activated carbon, biochar, biopolymers, zeolite, and sand caps. Figure 1 provides examples of sorbent and photocatalytic particles successfully compounded and 3D printed using polylactic acid as a binder. Additional adsorptive materials may be applicable and photocatalytic materials (Friedmann et al. 2019) may be applied to degrade contaminants of concern into less hazardous forms. This technical note further describes opportunities for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) project managers and the water and sediment resource management community to apply 3D printing of polymers containing adsorptive filler materials as a prototyping tool and as an on-site, on-demand manufacturing capability to remediate and monitor contaminants in the environment. Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operates, maintains, and manages more than $232 billion worth of the Nation’s water resource infrastructure. Using the Operational Condition Assessment (OCA) system, the USACE allocates limited resources to assess conditions and maintain assets in efforts to minimize risks associated with asset performance degradation. Currently, OCAs are conducted on each component within a facility every 5 years, regardless of the component’s risk contribution. The analysis of risks associated with Flood Risk Management (FRM) facilities, such as dams, includes considering how the facility contributes to its associated FRM watershed system, understanding the consequences of degradation in the facility’s performance, and calculating the likelihood that the facility will perform as expected given the current OCA condition ratings of critical components. This research will develop a scalable methodology to model the probability of failure of components and systems that contribute to the performance of facilities in their respective FRM systems combined with consequences derived from hydrological models of the watershed to develop facility risk scores. This interim report documents the results of the first phase of this effort, stakeholder analysis and literature review, to identify candidate approaches to determine the probability of failure of a facility.

Abstract:
To assist US Army Corps of Engineers resource managers in monitoring for cyanobacteria bloom events, a laboratory method using hyperspectral imaging has been developed. This method enables the rapid detection of cyanobacteria in large volumes and has the potential to be transitioned to aerial platforms for field deployment. Prior to field data collection, validation of the technology in the laboratory using monocultures was needed. This report describes the development of the detection method using hyperspectral imaging and the stability/reliability of these signatures for identification purposes. Hyperspectral signatures of different cyanobacteria were compared to evaluate spectral deviations between genera to assess the feasibility of using this imaging method in the field. Algorithms were then developed to spectrally deconvolute mixtures of cyanobacteria to determine relative abundances of each species. Last, laboratory cultures of Microcystis aeruginosa and Anabaena sp. were subjected to varying macro (nitrate and phosphate) and micro-nutrient (iron and magnesium) stressors to establish the stability of signatures within each species. Based on the findings, hyperspectral imaging can be a valuable tool for the detection and monitoring of cyanobacteria. However, it should be used with caution and only during stages of active growth for accurate identification and limited interference owing to stress.

Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operates, maintains, and manages over $232 billion worth of the Nation’s water resource infrastructure. Using Operational Condition Assessments (OCA), the USACE allocates limited resources to assess asset condition in efforts to minimize risks associated with asset performance degradation, but decision makers require a greater understanding of those risks. The analysis of risk associated with Flood Risk Management assets in the context of its associated watershed system includes understanding the consequences of the asset’s failure and a determination of the likelihood that the asset will perform as expected given the current OCA ratings of critical components. This research demonstrates an application of a scalable methodology to model the probability of a dam performing as expected given the state of its subordinate gates and their components. The research team combines this likelihood with consequences generated by the application of designed simulation experiments with hydrological models to develop a measure of risk. The resulting risk scores serve as an input for an optimization program that outputs the optimal set of components to conduct OCAs on to minimize risk in the watershed. Proof-of-concept results for an initial case study on the Jennings Randolph Dam are provided.

Abstract:
The Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve vegetation mapping project is part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). It is a cooperative effort between the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the National Park Service’s (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program (VMI). The goal of this project is to produce a spatially and thematically accurate vegetation map of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve prior to the completion of restoration efforts associated with CERP. This spatial product will serve as a record of baseline vegetation conditions for the purpose of: (1) documenting changes to the spatial extent, pattern, and proportion of plant communities within these two federally-managed units as they respond to hydrologic modifications resulting from the implementation of the CERP; and (2) providing vegetation and land-cover information to NPS park managers and scientists for use in park management, resource management, research, and monitoring. This mapping project covers an area of approximately 7,400 square kilometers (1.84 million acres [ac]) and consists of seven mapping regions: four regions in Everglades National Park, Regions 1–4, and three in Big Cypress National Preserve, Regions 5–7. The report focuses on the mapping effort associated with the Northwest Coastal Everglades (NWCE), Region 4 , in Everglades National Park. The NWCE encompasses a total area of 1,278 square kilometers (493.7 square miles [sq mi], or 315,955 ac) and is geographically located to the south of Big Cypress National Preserve, west of Shark River Slough (Region 1), and north of the Southwest Coastal Everglades (Region 3). Photo-interpretation was performed by superimposing a 50 × 50-meter (164 × 164-feet [ft] or 0.25 hectare [0.61 ac]) grid cell vector matrix over stereoscopic, 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) spatial resolution, color-infrared aerial imagery on a digital photogrammetric workstation. Photo-interpreters identified the dominant community in each cell by applying majority-rule algorithms, recognizing community-specific spectral signatures, and referencing an extensive ground-truth database. The dominant vegetation community within each grid cell was classified using a hierarchical classification system developed specifically for this project. Additionally, photo-interpreters categorized the absolute cover of cattail (Typha sp.) and any invasive species detected as either: Sparse (10–49%), Dominant (50–89%), or Monotypic (90–100%). A total of 178 thematic classes were used to map the NWCE. The most common vegetation classes are Mixed Mangrove Forest-Mixed and Transitional Bayhead Shrubland. These two communities accounted for about 10%, each, of the mapping area. Other notable classes include Short Sawgrass Marsh-Dense (8.1% of the map area), Mixed Graminoid Freshwater Marsh (4.7% of the map area), and Black Mangrove Forest (4.5% of the map area). The NWCE vegetation map has a thematic class accuracy of 88.4% with a lower 90th Percentile Confidence Interval of 84.5%.
