Full textIn this work, we intend to provide a broad overview of Ancient Italian pantheons from the Republican age through the study of god names. Our study focuses on theonymic groups from the three main Italic langages, which possess to this day the largest epigraphical corpus, i.e. Oscan, Umbrian and Latin. On the Oscan side, the Tablet of Agnone bears testimony of a profoundly Hellenized background, but its structure also reveals typically Italic theological features as well as theonyms. Similar features can be found in the Roman world and other Oscan corpora, especially the sanctuary of Mefitis at Rossano di Vaglio, which is central in our study. One may notice, for example, the common association of agrarian divinities to military contexts, or the importance of feminine divinities, which elude trifunctional classification. Unlike the tablet of Agnone or the Pietrabbondante sanctuary, which bear more significant traces of Roman influence, the sanctuary of Rossano seems to present a more indigenous set of theonyms – although we have to keep in mind that the site also belongs to Hellenized territory, as confirmed/demonstrated by archeological research. On the Umbrian side, the Iguvine Tablets reveal a complex theology, and some features which are very similar to what we can find in Latin and Etruscan worlds – the latter showing significant Italic influence in its theonymy. Finally, comparisons with Latin corpora, such as the pocola deorum ceramics collection from Latium, and with Faliscan and Praenestine Latin, confirm the major part played by exchanges between Italic, Greek, and Etruscan theologies. This work also demonstrates how these exchanges rely on specific linguistic processes, viz. borrowings, morphosemantic calques, translations, syncretism and interpretations

Full textThis research explores the literary corpora used in the context of the teaching of French as a foreign language from the point of view of formats and variation in text scales. The primacy of complete work and the condemnation of the chosen text extracts are analysed through a historical approach that sheds lights on the instability of the values given to the extract or long reading in the context of teaching. The analysis of out of context2French editorial corpora highlights that formats come from a dual heritage: chosen excerpts and authentic documents. Extraction obeys two matrices, classicisation, which responds to acceptability constraints, and standardisation, which responds to accessibility constraints. Extraction follows a double continuum organised around two axes, identity/transformation, and opacity/transparency. The link to the work is mostly forgotten. The corpora produced by teachers, once contextualised, present more flexible, idiosyncratic features, taking into account the scales of texts and their reception. Through a comparative study, we observe the effects of text formats on their reception by allophone readers: text extracts enable a restitution of the microstructural scale, integral readings without support create a partial reading with recomposition of the macrostructure and adapted readings allow a fictional immersion that plays all the scales of the reader. We offer, for the training of future teachers, didactics of the variation of scales that take into account the effects of formats on the reception of texts by learners

Full textAlthough deconstructed and challenged, the idea of the literary canon seemsto have survived. This ambiguous phenomenon has affected approaches to Mark Twain’swork to a profound degree. The group of texts most aptly illustrating this odd interlacingof hypercanonicity and complete obscurity is that which follows Huckleberry Finn : thelater writings of Twain. These texts invariably call up the question of their marginalityand their unreadability. Why were they left unread for so many years, and why do theycontinue to be so marginal, when compared to the immense success of the Adventures ?Can some of the manuscripts be salvaged by means of certain literary approaches and atspecific times in the history of aesthetic moods ? This PhD on Twain’s later writingsaims to explore the idea of unreadability by combining it with theoretical and criticalaccounts of lateness. « Unreadability » as a central notion to Twain’s later work startswith the most material and literal meaning of the word – that which cannot be read – andbegan as early as the moment of composition of these texts : many manuscripts remainedunpublished, incomplete, or were rejected by the publishers Twain approached. Thisillegibility combined with the texts’ frequently decried unreadability. The aim of this PhDis to read late Twain without necessarily attempting to rehabilitate these texts, withouteven confirming the full existence of the idea of « late » Twain. Instead of ignoring theexasperation and disappointment many critics and readers have experienced, this thesiswill attempt to work with this unreadability, but not without questioning and redefiningthe notion of unreadability and its contraries

Full textThis thesis has two parts, the first being a catalogue raisonné of different versions of the Inkarri myth and the second, an analysis of the corpus thus defined. The catalogue is made up of 114 records corresponding to the 114 myths which were collected, 110 in various publications and 4 from members of different native groups found in the field. The different versions of the myth come mainly from Peru but others come from Bolivia, Argentina and Chile. The corpus analysis is divided into three parts corresponding to three sections. In the first there are different themes that Inkarri shares with a certain number of myths from cultures which were never in contact with the Andean civilization: that of the resurrection, the severed head, and the competition and justification of the established order. These comparisons underline the universality of the Inkarri myth. In the second chapter we undertake a comparison of the various Andean sources originating from colonial or contemporary origin. This shows that the sequences have similarities which can be grouped together into five classifications : fragments of pre-hispanic origin, the evocation of the Conquest, elements which come from the Christian tradition, myths with local impact and historical reminiscences which have not been transmitted by tradition. In the third chapter, which is presented as a synthesis, we set out to establish the origins of the myth and to retrace the stages of its evolution by using three successive methods to address the corpus, the first structural, the second geographical and the third philological. In this way we can see that the first version was pre-hispanic and dealt with the rivalry between Inkarri and the king of the Collas. Its spread was limited to the area corresponding to the present departments of Cuzco and Puno. Following the Conquest there was a reworking of the myth where the king of Spain replaced the king of the Collas followed by a very rapid expansion whose vector, in our opinion, was the religious movement called Taqui Oncoy in the years 1560

Full textThis research focuses on the use of storytelling in the field of teaching foreign languages. It is based on the analysis of a sample of stories from Algerian and French origins to demonstrate the pedagogical potential of this literary form.The analysis of our corpus has made it possible, to highlight the various storytelling operations in the area of language teaching.In fact, because of its cultural content, this literary type represents an excellent mediator to introduce students to the culture-target. We explained that storytelling was perfectly suited to help students become aware of the intertextual and intercultural dimensions of literary work. By appropriating these two concepts, learners build an essential literary culture to develop their skills in the reading and writing fields. Storytelling allows also to offer fruitful exercises in the reading and writing domains, as well as the linguistics aspects. The educational experience, conducted among a college students audience in Algeria, was an opportunity to validate our hypothesis on the usefulness of tales in the field of foreign languages teaching. Indeed, the establishment of our educational system, based on the exploitation of a series of tales, has led students to realize the value of enhancing their culture in the scripture domain.The intertextual and intercultural analysis of the tales proposed by the students in the macro-task of the post-test indicates their resumption of the grounds that are characteristic of the Arabic and European ones. Moreover, we found that students had improved the structural quality of their texts. Indeed, the formal analysis of their writings led to the conclusion that the majority of learners had produced stories that satisfied the rules of textual coherence.This result indicates that storytelling is an appropriate way to lead students to produce coherent texts. Furthermore, the macro-task has also been an efficient way to verify the evolution of their language skills.More specifically, the observation of their writings indicates that they have made progress in the lexical and morphological domains. On the other hand, students need more coaching, for all what is related to syntax, to control this aspect of the target language
هذا البحث يتناول موضوع استعمال الحكايات في مجال تعليم اللغات الأجنبية. يستند هذا العمل على تحليل مجموعة من الحكايات تنتمي إلى الثقافتين الجزائرية و الفرنسية من أجل إيضاح مختلف الاستعمالات للحكاية في مجال تعليم اللغات الأجنبية. هذا النوع الأدبي يعد وسيلة ممتازة لتنمية معارف التلميذ فيما يتعلق بالثقافة الأجنبية. لقد شرحنا أن الحكاية مناسبة لتوعيته حول البعد التناصيّ و المتعدد الثقافات للنص الأدبي. بإدراكه لهاتين النقطتين، يُكوّن التلميذ ثقافة أدبية أساسية من أجل تنمية كفاءته في مجاليّ القراءة و الكتابة. الحكاية تسمح أيضا باقتراح تمارين خصبة تتعلق بمجالات القراءة، الكتابة و قواعد اللغة.التجربة البيداغوجية التي قمنا بها مع مجموعة من تلاميذ الطور الإكمالي، كانت فرصة لإثبات فرضيتنا حول فائدة الحكايات في مجال تعليم اللغات الأجنبية . استعمال نظام بيداغوجي يستند على مجموعة من القصص قاد التلاميذ لإدراك أهمية استغلال ثقافتهم في مجال الكتابة.التحليل التناصي و المتعدد الثقافات للحكايات المقترحة من طرف التلاميذ في التمرين النهائي يبرز اعادتهم لمقاطع أدبية تنتمي لحكايات غربية و أوروبية. لاحظنا أيضا أنّ التلاميذ اقترحوا حكايات تلتزم بقواعد الترابط النصي. هذه النتيجة تبيّن أنّ الحكاية هي جنس أدبي يناسب لقيادة التلاميذ نحو كتابة نصوص مترابطة. كما أنّ التمرين النهائي كان وسيلة لفحص تطور الكفاءة اللغوية عند التلاميذ الذين قاموا بتطوير مهاراتهم في مجالي اللغة و القواعد. لكن فيما يتعلق بمجال النحو، لقد لاحظنا أنّهم يحتاجون للمزيد من المرافقة حتى يتقنون هذا المجال اللغوي

Full textThis research, which focuses on the problem of literary corpus, is a reflection on the past and current teaching practices and modes of readings that treat literary texts. Our main goal is to show that there are specific usages of literature at schools. These are determined by the educational and political values specific to a given geographical and cultural context.Furthermore, this study focuses on studying the issue of school corpus while considering the Tunisian context in order to see if there are specific situations in FLE whereby the corpus meets specific educational goals. Because of the close relationship between texts and reading practices, we have tried to show that the approach to academic reading at school often backgrounds readers and subjectivity. It is in this sense that the literary historical, social and individual reception is a phenomenon that addresses the educational impact of the latter on learners and on the choice of texts at school

Full textOur thesis examines various aspects of the translator's presence in literary translations from English into French. Our study starts with an overview of translation approaches and theories from antiquity to the present, with particular focus on the translator's presence. We then concentrate on literary translators’ relationships with the authors (and texts) they translate. Translators' accounts often reveal mixed feelings of love, hate, desire and/or pleasure, so many strong feelings that are inherent in the translation process. We go on to discuss three specific cases of translator/author relationships. A study of the various traces that translators leave in their translations (both visible and invisible) introduces our corpus-based study. In this part, the role of the translator as negotiator between languages and cultures is analysed through the translations of H. Fielding's Bridget Jones and J. Austen's six novels: the translators' choices, ranging from visibility to invisibility, are examined in depth. The analysis of Austen's translations is an opportunity to look into the problem of translations by multiple authors and their impact on the perceived unity of the works. A diachronic study of the translations of Pride and Prejudice shows that retranslation is the place par excellence where the translator's presence is most apparent. Our final chapter is devoted to the treatment of several features of V. Woolf's style in the two translations of The Waves by French writers M. Yourcenar and C. Wajsbrot. The translator's presence constitutes an integral part of literary translation, and determines the way foreign literature is received

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to prove that we cannot create ready to use translation methods for literary texts from solutions given by two translators of a same literary text. In order to show our thesis, we compared and examined the way of translation of both translators in the three constituent elements. The first element is about the interpretation and the understanding of a literary text. The second element is about the recreation of the literary aspect of a translated text. The third element is about the decontextualisation of a translated text. The result of the research shows that the solutions proposed by the two translators from a same corpus, are based on the significant of the original text and on the equivalent words of the target language. Therefore, these solutions are the cause for the discrepancy between two artistic perceptions of a text and consequently, they cannot be applied for the translation of other texts. Our solutions are based on the meaning and the impression given by a text, thus, only our solutions can reduce the discrepancy between two artistic perceptions of a same text

Full textFrom a signification of “civilization” to a consciousness of “culturality” with movement, the evolution of notions of culture and the intercultural leads us today to a more dynamic reflection concerning the culture bearer's identity and his relationship with others. This dynamism is notably apparent in the teaching of French as a foreign language, particularly when it is taught through the study of French literature. The literary text, once considered as simply material for translation, appears to us today to be an intercultural repertoire filled with identity and cultural contacts between the francophone author and the foreign reader. This thesis attempts to clarify, using an interdisciplinary approach, understanding of culture and the intercultural in French language and French literary teaching, choosing the Chinese university milieu as our object of study. Supported by observations in class and interviews with Chinese teachers, we have reflected on intercultural issues in French literary teaching in the Chinese university context. This research on the ground allows us to propose pedagogical activities for Chinese students, making use of a French literary corpus of the twentieth century, that encourage reflection about the link between stereotype and identity, image diversity, as well as alterity in relationships with others

Full textThis thesis investigates the use of reporting clauses and reporting parentheticals in final and medial position in direct and indirect (reported) speech. Traditional grammatical models seem to offer no satisfactory explanation as regards to final and medial positions of the reporting clause or parenthetical within the sentence. Though grammatical descriptions give formal structure to the phenomenon, they also tend to limit its scope and need to be stretched to accommodate the reality of reporting clauses and parentheticals in literary texts.Analysing medial and final reporting clauses within the framework of French théorie de l’énonciation shows that they blur the frontier between reported and non-reported speech more often than not. From a literary point of view, medial and final positions can be considered as choices made for stylistic reasons, in which case the emphasis is put on reporting clauses as creating textual cohesion rather than causing rupture within the narrative

Full textEven if Monique Wittig was a very talented writer, she has been especially studied as an essayist. At the center of both her fictional and political universes is the human body. First of all, I intend to examine the relationship between the body of the text and the human body described in the text. The attention that Wittig pays to the body of the text is interrelated to her idea of language. According to her, language can operate a “plastic surgery” on reality. In the same way, the book as an object and the act of reading can operate on the perception of one’s identity and body. In other words, the language has a material side that affects our everyday life. It can seem a banal statement, but Wittig goes further in her thought: words hurt us and cooperate in the development of social injustices and class hierarchies. On account of this, my research aims to investigate this particular kind of violence that literary texts and common language perform on our bodies. Finally, Wittig’s lesbian characters will be analyzed in the last part of my work. The body of this peculiar lesbian protagonist is traditionally represented as ambiguously monstrous and scary. Wittig takes this tradition back and she manipulates it in order to show how lesbian bodies are vulnerable and strong at the same time. In short, Wittig’s lesbian characters are not simply women who love other women: they are people who do not fit in the heteronormative binary system and whose bodies are made of and from words, and it is through words that they can create a different reality

Full textWe thought of undertaking this work after noticing the increasing appearance of violence on the germanspeeking stage in the 1990s. One can doubt whether it is a simple epiphenomenon that bears witness to the ideological impasse and the need to compete with audiovisual arts. It may reflect a more profound mutation of our vision from the human, that integrates a cruelty considered until then as a taboo. A spontaneous application of the artaudian theories may take place: Antonin Artaud promoted in the 1930s a theatre of cruelty which also brought into question the old antagonism between culture and violence. We therefore study playwrights that seem to rest on the traditionnal antagonist point of view, condemning the violence they produce: this occurs in works of secondary authors as easily as in those of renowned authors like Dea Loher or Elfriede Jelinek. We then present the playwrignts that avoid every unilateral judgment by various authors, so as Dirk Dobbrow, Albert Ostermaier and above all Werner Schwab. Even if aesthetic concerns seem more important in these last works, the performance of violence is always accompanied by a questionning about its modes and about the nature of theatre. So these works reveal the tensions going through the actual cultural world, on an intellectual plane as well as on an aesthetic one

Full textThis thesis proposes an analysis of a phraseme as a complex, stable, variable and dynamic linguistic sign, and as a translation problem based on a corpus of contemporary French literature and its Serbian translations. The discourse highlights the distance between the meaning of a model and the meaning of a phraseme that is semantically accomplished and embedded in a text. One of its possible realizations is a pun that does not only consist in transgressing the syntactic criteria but in developing a new global signified, serving the speaker’s discursive strategies. This work identifies linguistic mechanisms specific to lexical frozenness that are inevitable in the act of translation, and incompatibilities between the problems of translation and properties of a given phraseme. Its translation problems in a literary text, whose narrative progression it shapes, exceed the dichotomy between a domesticated translation and a foreignized translation. Translation problems result from the way in which the speaker establishes the link between the conceptualization inherent to a phraseme, built itself on the basis of pre-existing concepts - hence the mental image and the connotative surplus value - and the reality to which the speaker applies it. Its translation, given its pragma-semantic complexity, necessarily requires a source-oriented approach in the interpretative phase and a target-oriented solution

Full textAnalysis of the body provides an effective means of capturing comic performances in classical Athens and Magna Graecia. Textual and iconographic sources ought to be considered together to shed light upon the staging of the comic body as it was perceived and imagined. In particular, the conclusions of this work are based upon the comparison of Greek comedies from the 5th and 4th centuries B.C. and South-Italian vase-paintings of comic subjects. The first chapter presents the two corpuses and the questions raised by their comparison. Chapter two describes the material characteristics of the comic costume. The third and fourth chapters focus on the semiotics of the costume ; the signs of the genre are treated first, followed by a discussion of the social and moral characterization of the personages. The final chapter pertains to the dramatic function of the comic gesture

Full textBooks of a new kind appeared out of the total wars and genocides of the twentieth century – testimonies. They are written by male and female survivors of extreme political violence, who, taking on the role of witnesses, decided to share their experiences with others by writing of the suffering they had undergone. Their mission consists in testifying what they saw and experienced, paying tribute to those who did not survive, questioning the mechanisms which led to mass murder, and opposing to the attempts to destroy human beings and their culture a reflection about living together and the ever-present possibility of the most fundamental social relationships falling apart. The corpus left by these witnesses is the object of study of this PhD dissertation, which has two aims: to describe, based on a close reading of the texts, partially aided by the tools of textometric analysis, the main characteristics of the genre, and to create the basis of a history of testimonies and their public and critical reception, using accounts which reveal such diverse experiences as trench warfare during the World War One, the concentration camps of the Nazi regime, and colonial violence in Algeria. In order to understand the generic specificity of these texts going beyond the diversity of the works and the events they proceed, it is necessary to define the underlying common project which forms a tradition, given that a genre is not defined according to unchanging ontological criteria. It appears in precise socio-historical circumstances, and is situated at a level of semiotic interference which justifies this dual philological and historical approach

Full textIn reflecting on and reasoning about the decline of his country, Pierre Drieu la Rochelle appears as an heir to those writers and theoreticians who denounced its decadence, including Paul Bourget but principally Barrès and Nietzsche, the two masters with whom he identifies. "Je me suis trouvé comme tous les autres écrivains contemporains devant un fait écrasant : la décadence", writes the novelist, in the preface to Gilles. Thus he gladly cites Aragon, Céline, Malraux and Montherlant, who were all writers and intellectuals of the interwar years, and with whom Drieu shares some kind of prophetic fraternity. Drieu foresees the interaction of his literary creativity with ideology and politics through the lens of the convulsion of time, occasioned by the crises of antimodernism and antiparliamentarism. Consequently he faces what he considers to be a "crashing fact" in practising a "systematical observation". In his "satirical work", his insistent reference to decadence, which he detects in both the individual and collective body, is subjected to literary metamorphosis ; this imagery betrays his intimate obsession. In order to grasp what is at stake in such a mental representation, situated at the intersection of ideology and literature, it is necessary to understand first of all the foundations of the imagination of decadence, inherent in the troubled world of the interwar years. This is necessary in order to set apart the unity and the coherence of Drieu's work, focused on this decadence to be considered as an "fait d’imagination" (Pierre Citti) and made real through a central topic : the body

Full textHagiographic production written during the ducal period in Normandy (911-1204) has never been the subject of an exhaustive and rigorous study. It was impossible to have precise and certain statistical data on the characteristics, even if only quantitative, of this production: its division by centuries, the relationships between the texts of known authors and those written by anonymous authors, the distribution between the number of ancient or medieval saints, the hagiographic subgenres (vitae, passion, miracula, translations), the "typologies of holiness" (bishop, abbot, laity, woman, etc.). This situation, which is detrimental to the criticism of texts, is due first of all to the difficulty of processing hagiographical texts in terms of the history of literature: too many authors remain anonymous, many texts are not dated and their place of production remains uncertain. Thus, if hagiography is an essential source of Norman history, the conditions of its production and dissemination have not been studied in a global way, nor have they given rise to the creation of research tools.This thesis aims to fill this gap, both by creating a Repertorium (with a "chrono-geo-hagiographic" database, allowing a mapping of medieval Norman production) of hagiographic texts written during the period 911-1204, and by opening critical and historical reflection on this corpus. The aim was to research and understand the centres of hagiographic production; to show the relationships between the texts, authors, libraries and institutions where these documents were produced; to understand the work of the authors (research and use of sources, literary choices); to explain the motives (religious, pastoral, liturgical, but also political and economic) that are at the basis of medieval hagiographic writing

Full textIn contemporary drama, the amazing abundance of corpse and odd apparitions between life and death is due on the hand to the exhibition of the body and its involvment to signification, and the other, to the return of death, a death which is no longer seen as a punctual event, but a situation or a state of being as itself. From beckett to copi, from ionesco to vinaver, the corpse happens to be place where ideological, phantasmatic, esthetic and dramatic challenges appear. In a strategy of inscription, the dead body is the expression of historical violence or witness to the alienation of modern man. While language and symbolization fail to make sens, while words have lost any power to mean, only the corpse seems to be able to signify; it identifies also with the "other" imaginary body, the schizophrenic, anal body, close to the instinctive life. Actuated by subversive phantasm, the housebreaking strategy of death endeavours to reach the center of the body, the very nakedness under the signs and deceitful masks. This major obsession of body and death generates a diversified, chequered and lively dramatic art. .

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to bring light to the complex relationship between the “body” of the traveller and that of the writer, but also the “corpus” of literary work, in so far as we deal with several travel writers in the Far East from the 19th and 20th centuries. It consists of the works of Segalen, Claudel, Loti, Michaux and David-Néel. Their reflections relate at once to oriental ideograms and the “alternative” religions of the Far East (Tibet, China, Japan), notably Taoism and Buddhism, and, in parallel, to confrontations with the otherness of the “body”.For our problematic of literary space we propose three principal axes, which divide the thesis into three parts, analysing the textual space, the “transcendent” space and then the “interior” space.The interest of this work on the “body” under the exotic gaze is measured against the notion of literary space, which is evaluated in an individual process specific to each of the authors

Our first step consists in an analysis of these writings, showing how schiller tackles the problem of the connection between the soul and the body, a problem which lies at the heart of modern anthropology. Then our study attempts at showing how schiller discovered in the dramatic stage the ideal place for analyzing the connection, taking advantage both of the writings and of the dramatic performance. Our third part will show how the narrative writing enables schiller to experiment a new approach to the question by using the novel as a chronicle of the wanderings of the soul, which he tracks down in his early work

Full textAt the end of the "classical age", gothic fiction, with its emphatic representation of places dark and clear, extolled values felt as essentially british : feeling, devotion, family. Thereby, it set for its readers a clear "conceptual picture" ("tabula") in which good vanquished evil. But the representation of the "mysteries of the body" (eros, thanatos) worked towards the break-up of the epistemic "tabula". At the time when, in dark gothic places, bodies "brutish" were threatening bodies devoid of "animality", love and death, in the living world, were becoming very violent "natural forces" inspiring terror. Death indeed was no longer always explained in the christian perpective. And with the increasing "process of civilization" and the accompanying refusal of the body, all human "animality" was becoming permanently focused in eros. After the break-up of the classical "tabula" and the coming into force of the following "episteme", gothic characters tended to cease to be "concepts in action" (good victorious over evil) : between matter and figure, the body of these characters was seen as a stricter equivalent of the body as experienced in life, that is to say, as a body acted upon by the "mysterious forces" of sex and death. In the corpus studied (texts by walpole, reeve, lee, radcliffe, lewis, maturin, reveroni saint-cyr), representation of the far-beyond conceals a keen questioning upon death, and "flesh" becomes "sex". In presenting, removing, or distancing the body individual or collective, thus qualifying it for fascination, these novels contributed to the production (and staging) of the "wildness" of the body. Thereby, they played their own part in the literary demise of the classical "episteme"

Full textAnalysing the body often entails a series of – often qualitative – dichotomies [nature vs. culture, discourse vs. novel self-expression], and invariably intertwines with language. This comparative study centres on “embodiment” mechanisms [Judith Butler], and broaches them through the prism of sexual differences, in books by two contemporary Austrian authors: Evelyn Schlag and Elfriede Jelinek. Their writing self-evidently criticises language but likewise unveils deep divergences that denote different conceptions of male and female. This work favours a heuristic approach, which critiques the feminist theories from the 1970s and 1980s before homing in more specifically on the textual foundations of culture [Kulturwissenschaften] in general, and their implications for gender studies in particular. This study zooms in on the process of producing text about the body. The method is at the crossroads between an analysis of gender [psychoanalysis, deconstruction and metalanguage] and of literary genres [novels, plays, poetry, etc.]. It probes strategies to cement, twist or eliminate the generic frontiers that each of these authors’ poetic angles follow, from a wider perspective than the strict correlation between femininity and logos subversion. It simultaneously questions the effects of literates handling text with a view to “re-semantising” the feminine body in a non essentialist manner

Full textBefore being used in literature, diglossia was defined in 1928 by the philologist Jean Psichari as the “coexistence of two rival languages in a same nation”. Strengthened by the sociolinguistics, the concept of diglossia was imported in literature without being substantially transformed. In this thesis, diglossia represents the balance of power existing in the case of multilingualism as in the Maghreb. Beyond the linguistic tensions linked to some geopolitical events, diglossia shows the way some authors, as Assia Djebar and Claude Ollier, express these complex events through their works and ways of writing. It also shows the way they leave space for the Other in their works. The Other may be the stranger outside as well as the otherness into themselves, without forgetting the inaudible language of the body that the writing tries to express. The literary diglossia allows focus on fundamental cultural and ideological facts which are implied in the language. It seems to scramble our cultural references, moulding the authors’ languages into a literary language, far from the everyday speech. All the Assia Djebar’s works studied throughout this thesis belong to the Quatuor (still uncompleted) – L’amour, la Fantasia (1985), Ombre sultane (1987) and Vaste est la prison (1995) – except the novel entitled Loin de Médine (1991). Full textHernán Ronsino's literary project (Chivilcoy, Argentina, 1975) presents a spatial and temporal hinge that, without leaving aside its poetics on the language, is about to regain a new momentum. This author began publishing in the 2000s, when new publishing houses opened their doors to young lesser-known writers. In this context of renewal, questions about the literary language have multiplied. Since then, Ronsino's work has been a reflection on language and the linguistic condition of human beings. In his diegesis, he integrates this experimental state of mind vis-à-vis the literary language. When the literary field questioned his language, this writer built his project from the poetization of these reflections. His relation to language is for us the most important aspect of his poetics.The study that we propose in this thesis seeks to determine the pillars of his project, as well as to formulate, through his words when he expresses himself in interviews about his writing, categories that make it possible to analyze his creative work. This methodological perspective is, in our opinion, a starting point in our approach to cross the fictional text and the writer's words. To develop these words, we present a two-part thesis.In the first part, divided into three chapters, we conduct an integral study of the stylistics of his first four books. We analyze the way in which Ronsino works temporality from a transtextual point of view, based on the figure of repetition. Links established with other texts become a box of resonance building an image of the regime of historicity. In this respect, repetition serves to elaborate a temporal organization within one's project, as well as to insert in one's speech the formulation of other writers. Ronsino seeks, above all, to make the sentence the visible face of a "poetics of the accent". Indeed, in his project we find the desire to write the orality of his native village.In the second part, we address two notions derived from the poetics of the accent: space and the body. The materiality of the book is at the center of an interest in historically dense writing. This materiality contributes to the poetization of real space and puts forward an approach to literature as a graphic art. In these circumstances, the body plays a decisive role when it comes to thinking about writing in the gestural and corporal dimension. It is, after all, a practice that fully engages the body. Thus, literature can lead to a body thinking that allows a biopoetique approach to texts

Against the English tradition of social realism and In-Yer-Face nihilism, the Theatre of Catastrophe sets up a new aesthetics of cruelty. The dramatic context of the plays explores the powerful paradigm of flesh whilst resisting the new orthodoxy of the body overwhelmingly present in society and art. The play disappoints the audience's expectation of a message, transgresses the limits of intimacy instead; visceral passion is exhibited beyond moral judgement. The chaotic perspective of the body in pain in the post-ethical world of the afler-Shoah is mirrored within the fi-agmented structure of the plays. The analysis opens on an inventory of the mutiiated body, then moves on to anatomy both as a transgression of intimacy and an epistemological and ontological quest. The compulsive need to look inside the human body leads to a reflection on the role of the audience in the spectacle of flesh, questioning the ethics of today's visual aesthetics. In dramatic representation, the body is caught in a dialectics between exhibition and concealment, revelation and secrecy. The conspicuous display of the body gradually fades out in later plays on behalf of language and the spoken voice. As insignificance leads to silence, so the aesthetics of transgression point to the spectrality of the body

Full textThis study analyszes the representation of cultural identity in sixteen drama texts written by Kenyans in English and in French for the Kenya National Drama Festival (KNDF). Considering the colonial history and the postcolonial context of Kenya, the task involved identifying the postcolonial markers within the texts, identifying major themes and traits constituting a Kenyan cultural identity and determining specific cultural identity. Using a comparative approach, the study draws from both postcolonial and theatre theories. The postcolonial concepts touching on identity through language, culture and representation are identified and analyzed in respect to the Kenyan context. For this reason, the study narrows down to the theoretical works of Edward Saïd, Homi K. Bhabha, Chinua Achebe and Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. The study reveals that the Kenyan population is faced with a multiplicity of cultural choices brought about by the colonization experience, the new practices associated with globalization, as well as the complexities and challenges of daily life. The KNDF proves to be an avenue for sensitizing the public on new phenomena, for denouncing societal ills and for promoting African traditional norms. It is apparent that the use of European languages does not hinder the representation of cultural reality of the local society. Kenya therefore attests to cultural mobility seen in the progression from the traditional system towards a more globalized disposition

Full textFrom Michelet’s definition of the Renaissance and its literary productions in 1855 to the actual discourse of high school textbooks, this dissertation reveals the process by which a canonical representation of 16th century French Literature, as well as a canonical form of this literature, are built and shared. The study is based on a wide range of school textbooks, from Gustave Lanson’s Histoire de la littérature française to textbooks published in 2011, as well as literary anthologies from the first half of the 20th century and the famous Lagarde et Michard published from the 1940’s until the 1980’s.The form in which 16th century authors and their work are represented in these textbooks and anthologies indicates that several mechanisms contributed to bringing out the idea of a « literary century » which was organized by an institutional selection of texts on one hand, and, on the other hand, by the circulation of a doxa about both the writers and their writing. Therefore, as this discussion underlines the construction of classical representations for each of the most represented authors, it also establishes that these figures tend to create an overarching canonical representation of the century, as well as a canonical corpus for this time period. This canonical representation and its corpus take shape as a hierarchical construction, within which each author and literary work are given a specific place. This place thus determines the ranking of the writers in the canonical space, which cannot easily be changed, as the canon turns out to be quite identical throughout the length of the study. On the contrary, the institutional representations seem to evolve during the 20th century, and so the « 16th century » of Lanson proves to be quite different in its discursive form than the one of the current textbooks.Moreover, the canonical « idea » of a 16th century in French Literature is linked to the development of French literary history and its institutional goals. Thus, this idea has to be put in perspective with the ideological values which are meant to be transmitted by the national school curricula, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st. This reveals that the notion of a « literary century » is essentially a historical construction, a narrative that ought to be questioned in order to understand its presuppositions and the values that inform its construction

Full textThis doctoral thesis aims to examine the interlingual transfer of verbal-nominal collocations in literary translation by analyzing in detail 6,578 examples. The corpus of the thesis consists of the first seven novels by the contemporary French writer Michel Houellebecq, published over a quarter of a century, namely between 1994 and 2019. The corpus includes the novels in their original language — French — and their translations into two other languages — Italian and Polish. The combination of language systems chosen for this study is particularly fascinating and not coincidental. Firstly, Italian, as the first target language, is a Romance language, meaning it belongs to the same linguistic family as the novel’s original language, French. Secondly, the second target language, Polish, belongs to the family of Slavic languages, meaning it is genetically more distant from the source language. Notably, this thesis presents the regularity in the translators’ use of the observed translation solutions, considering different aspects, subtypes, and categories of verbal-nominal collocations. Among other things, the thesis analyses the influence of the syntactic structure of collocations, their belonging to particular semantic classes, and the preferences of both Italian and Polish literary translators in the choice of particular techniques

Full textThe present study was designed to highlight aesthetic thought of Zola in relation to vital energy. Behind his scientism doctrine—to which Zola, a theoretician is too often reduced—the novelist, from his youth, constantly reflected on creative genius. In order examine this side of his writing, we focused on his writings on art. In the 1860s, his formative years, realism declined and a post-realistic current emerged which seemed destined to surpass it. Realism, which was considered a form of materialism presenting “matter” without synthesizing it with the “mind”, was criticized for its supposed lack of creativity. In response, in his writings on Courbet and Manet, Zola proposed the idea of the work as produced not by the “mind”, but by “life”, arguing that the expression of the artist’s life animates all objects around him or her. While he adhered to realism’s endeavour that, by rejecting metaphysics and imagination, he lead art to matter, his theory of the productive notion of “life” went beyond realism, espousing the creativity of “matter”. This attempt echoed the history of aesthetics, which moved with Taine and Guyau—among others—towards the theorization of life as beauty in the positivist era. Through the prism of his belief in vitalism, as understood through the critical and philosophical discourse on art in his time, we offer a new way of reading Zola’s work which reveals his constant efforts to build a creative principle specific to the naturalist regime from his first novels to The Four Gospels

The speeches made in the media and in some TV series are, in most cases, a literal restatement of visual coding of the language (text written in standard Arabic) in auditory coding (reading aloud the written text). Similarly, everyday Arabic does not have the same coding as Arabic that exists in the media, in books and in Arabic language courses. This gives the impression that the current teaching content is not suitable for a usage outside the language classroom.This thesis deals with the problem of the composition of the lexical content of textbooks of teaching Arabic L2 of Higher Language Institute of Damascus (Syria). A content that does not withdraw from standard norms (focus on the adaptation of a classic or moderne standard Arabic), but seeks to be as close as possible to the daily practice of language that is very rich in dialect. The current content represents the traditional approach of the lexicon, which focuses on the semantics of words and phrases while the communicative features of these language elements are little treated. The proposed analysisshows the weak points in the structure of textbooks now in use. It is based on the criteria of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the skill references of Niveaux pour le français that offer an approach batter adapted to the preparation of the lexicon in recent textbooks of teaching moderne languages. This analysis focuses on finding the crossing points in standard and spoken Arabic in Syria to build a route map that allows the learner an easy passage from what he learns in the Arabic language classroom to Arabic that is really practiced in everyday communications. It provides some solutions to reduce the gap between these two usages of Arabic

This method investigates the authors' establishment of lexical universes (mondes lexicaux) in the writing of dramatic scripts. In analyzing these lexical universes, we can trace and evaluate diverse representations of the body and note that two major categories appear: one, is a universe concerned with a corps humide (that which is fluid, organic and sensual); the second describes a corps sec (the mechanical body, the dead body, the body as an abstract idea). In this regard, the preoccupation with the body evident in our contemporary culture is also present in contemporary theater. Most important among these are, first, the elucidation of the notion of a lezamanian intentionality of having a poem function as an independent body; and, second, the enunciation of a typology of body models as displayed in his poetry. The notion of vision, understood as the interaction between the gaze and the experience of the subject in a determined space – island, American continent, house – makes up the theoretical foundation on which the subject´s condition as body, the conceptual ambivalence of the represented body, and the paradox as the predominant theoretical figure are elaborated. In Part One, I trace the model of the body insular in both the poem Muerte de Narciso and the essay Coloquio Juan Ramón Jiménez. Part Two is dedicated to the model of the body baroque as exhibited in the poem « Dador », and to the (non-) consistency of this model with the theoretical principles as elaborated by Lezama in his collection of essays La expresión americana, with particular reference to his « Sistema poético del mundo ». Lezama´s collection of poems Fragmentos a su imán and his personal writings are the corpus analyzed in Part Three: starting from the notion of the corps propre, I demonstrate that in his last creative period, it was Lezama´s own body that operated as the model of the poetic body

Full textBody is not a theme : it changes the way we are used to think by breaking the frontiers between the elements of dualism, between the fields of knowledge, and between theory and practice. We tried to discover how it manifests itself in the works of Woolf, Beckett, Sarraute, des Forêts and Bernhard. We observe that the "continuism" (vs dualism) the body introduces affects literature in three ways : first, each work produces an image that encloses it and reflects its esthetical program ; then, continuism makes esthetical forms fall into chaos (pain, animal, "scene") ; finally, literary theory that describes how literature lives ("intertextualité", translation, adaptation) is invaded by the analysis of its example so that they combine themselves. These three manifestations respectively describe the body's action on literary analysis, the body's action on our reception of the works, the body's action on theory. It is what we studied in our three latest chapters, after defining the word "body" and summarizing its use in the literary theory (first chapter)

Full textNous définissons le concept d'objet discursif, analysé dans trois corpus (médiatique, littéraire et politique). Le corpus est défini comme un ensemble de propositions énoncées, à la fois observatoire pour l'analyse et entité dynamique. Selon la linguistique du sens commun (Sarfati), l'inscription de la doxa dans la langue est postulée relativement à l'organisation d'un système du sens commun lui-même régi par un dispositif de topoï. La relation entre le système du sens commun et l'apparition de formes linguistiques permet d'étayer l'hypothèse d'un dispositif antétieur à la prise de parole caractérisable également par le choix opéré lors de la mise en expression. La phénoménologie permet de s'intéresser aux processus de sémiotisation : au niveau linguistique, la "Théorie des sémanitques (Cadiot et Visetti), envisage la saisie d'une forme sémantique en motifs, profils, et thèmes. Nous substituons le concept de topos à celui de thème : les topoï constituent l'aboutissement des dynamiques sémantiques, et sont par conséquent linguistiquement motivés et profilés en discours. La performativité est intégrée à la dynamique (elle est décrite comme catalyseur dans la constitution d'une forme sémantique). Les phases de saisie du sens sont redistribuées selon la tripartition canon-vulgate-doxa : nous relevons les apports de la démarche discursive grâce à l'anticipation lexicale. Les motifs insérés permettent de saisir une généricité du sens propre à un corpus donné, ou à une Formation Discursive. Sur la voie des profilages, ils constituent une zone de stabilisation pré-syntaxique, qui contraint la mise en syntagme. We define this research the concept of discursive object, analyzrd in three corpora (media, literature, and politics). Corpus is defined as a collection of "uttered propositions", considered both as an observatory for analysis, and as a dynamic entity. According to the linguistics of common sense (Sarfati), the inscription of doxa in language is postulated in connection with the organization of a system of common sense, wich is governed by a topoï-based device. The analysis of linguistic forms (ellipses, grammatical categories) makes the link between this system and the choices operated during enunciation. Phenomenology underlines the processes of semiotisation : at the linguistic level, the Theory of semantic forms (Cadiot and Visetti) studies the construction of semantic forms along three dimensions of meaning, named motives, profiles, and themes. We substitute themes for the concept of topos : topoï are linguistically motivated, and profiled in discourse. Performativity is integrated into the dynamic movement itself, and contributes to the argumentative work of the units (it is described as a catalyst in the constitution of a semantic form). We show that these phases can be evaluated according to the tripartition "canon-vulgate-doxa" : we raise the contributions of the discursive levels into the constitution of a semantic form, thanks to the phenomenon of lexical anticipation. What we call "intserted motives" reveals the genericity of specific corpora, or of Discursive Formations. In the course of "profiling", they constitute a pre-syntactic zone of stabilization. The "doxic profiles" finally permit the construction of topoï by thematisation

Full textThis master’s thesis undertakes Émile Zola’s work towards a poetic consideration and the psycho-physiology revelation. It attempts to explain the structure, scientist and imaginary, of the analogical and metaphoric connections of the body and the spirit, which elaborate around the problems of the confession. During all the 19th century, the establishment of conformity between the physical and the psychic indicates the interest of the human sciences for the parallelism, the semiology and the taxonomy. It expresses especially the idea of a revealing language, symbolic of the interiority of the individual. Émile Zola does not escape this attraction for the eloquent functions from the body which animates the era. The truth in naturalist regime is produced by the body, because on him and in him are read the phenomena of the psyche, which are successively conscious and unconscious. The examination of the psycho-physiological demonstrations in the zolien novel depicted the importance of automatic mobility in the process of revelation. The spontaneous activity of the physical appearance and the psychic indicates the inexpressible one, the unknown and the indescribable of the character

Full textThis thesis aims to understand what neology encompasses in the context of children’s literature. To this end, a typology of nonce formations is established to categorise occasionalisms identified in a corpus of children’s books. This classification follows Jean Tournier’s lexicogenic matrices [1985] with three macro-mechanisms: morpho-semantic, semantic and morphological neology. Four nonce formation processes were identified in this study: word formation, word de-formation, word creation and borrowing. Lexical innovations are not confined to lexicological processes. Some occasionalisms result from stylistic features. Thus, Tournier’s matrices were enhanced to include all nonce formation processes following inductive reasoning in a corpus-driven approach.For the purpose of this study a corpus of children’s books was compiled. It includes classics from the 19th and 20th century written in English, French, German and Italian with their translations in the respective languages. The corpus is made of over nine million words. It is aligned to enable contrastive analysis.This thesis also reviews the function of occasionalisms (sound effect, wordplay, attention-seeking device, anti-naming, hypostatization, deictic reference, and euphemism) and their translation (either based on the nonce formation process or reproducing the function in the source language).In the context of children’s literature, most occasionalisms are not coined for the purpose of carrying meaning (or filling a lexical gap). They play a metalinguistic and didactic role, inviting the reader to reflect on linguistic norms

Full textThis thesis explores the meaning of corruption in the Hippocratic Corpus and in the tragedies of Euripides. The aim is not only to reread and reinterpret the terms that express corruption, but above all to place them in their historical and social context. A preliminary semantic analysis describes the meaning of two basic Greek terms that express corruption, φθείρω and σήπω and shows the importance of these terms in the classical period. The notion of corruption in the Hippocratic Corpus is studied through the examination of a range of diseases related to the head, thorax, uterus and the two essential fluids of the human body, blood and semen. This analysis shows that corruption in the Hippocratic Corpus is closely related to the evolution of disease and primarily concerns malfunctions of the body. In contrast, the notion of corruption in Euripides, as revealed by the analysis of a selection of tragedies, goes beyond the corporeal sphere and is used metaphorically to express the dramatic intensity in situations when heroes experience extraordinary physical or mental deterioration. Despite this clear distinction, a comparative evaluation of the two works illustrates an intriguing similarity between the two authors regarding the particular role of themes related to women or imminent death in the context of corruption. Overall, this study reveals a complexity and a semantic richness associated with corruption that is largely unknown to the modern reader
